Abstract:
We experimentally demonstrate a quantum-measurement-based receiver for a range of modulation schemes and alphabet lengths in a telecom C-band. We attain symbol error rates below the shot noise limit for all the studied modulation schemes and the alphabet lengths [Formula: see text]. In doing so, we achieve the record energy sensitivity for telecom receivers. We investigate the trade-off between energy and bandwidth use and its dependence on the alphabet length. We identify the combined (energy and bandwidth) resource efficiency as a figure of merit and experimentally confirm that the quantum-inspired hybrid frequency/phase encoding has the highest combined resource efficiency.

Abstract:
The ability to exchange critical information across a broad spectrum of users is the success of a response. Communicating on the North Slope of Alaska is a technical challenge. One of the most critical elements supporting any Contingency Response is telecommunications (telecom). Telecom, as an issue rears its head after almost every exercise or real world response situation. It never seems to matter what type of event the response is supporting, the location of the response or weather that is occurring. Telecom continues to come up as a 'lessons learned'. Recent technological advances (Last 15–20 Years) have resolved some older, yet lingering issues, (e.g. SATCOM, Fiber Optics, Digitization, and the Internet). That said, trying to communicate over an area covering tens-of-thousands of square miles in some of the harshest, most remote regions on the planet is at the very least - demanding. Technically, in many regions, telecom issues can be fairly easy to resolve. In the Arctic, several factors as well as weather play a major part in our ability to respond to an incident. Many areas are not accessible on a road system. Ice roads provide seasonal, temporary access. When ice roads are not available then various aircraft can be utilized. Some sites may only be accessible via specialized vehicles treading lightly on the tundra or that displace the tons of equipment over a broad area for frozen pond, lake and river crossings, minimizing environmental impact. To meet the challenge of Spill Response on the North Slope of Alaska, Alaska Clean Seas and its member companies have developed and employ a network of Very High Frequency (VHF), Ultra-High Frequency (UHF), Cellular, Microwave, and SATellite COMmunications (SATCOM) Systems. A recent Federal Communications Commission directive to reduce bandwidth usage forced the modernization of Alaska's Oil Spill Response Network. The nationwide requirement enables the same number of users to occupy half the frequency spectrum. Alaska is unique in that the entire State's Oil Spill Response Network shares the same frequencies and compatible equipment. This enables the cooperatives to seamlessly support each another. One of the obvious reasons that telecom becomes an issue is non-standardized exchange of ideas, recommendations, or commands. User unfamiliarity with telecom devices (radios, speaker microphones) also contributes to communication barriers. Use of jargon, ten codes and often cultural references can inhibit needed messages from being received as expected. This can easily be improved through Incident Command System training

Abstract:
Employees in the telecom sector are knowledge workers and, thus, managers, HR professionals, and policymakers in the industry need to retain them through knowledge management policies. It is against this premise that this study investigated the effect of knowledge management on employee retention in the telecom sector. Research design employed in this study is a cross-sectional survey with an accessible population of thirty telecom companies in the southeastern region of Nigeria using a simple random sampling technique. The sample size was determined with the Krejcie and Morgan sample size determination table. A questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. Respondents’ profiles were analysed with frequency distribution while the formulated hypotheses were analysed with linear regression. The study found that knowledge management dimensions have a significant effect on the measures of employee retention. The study concludes that knowledge management measured in terms of knowledge acquisition, knowledge storage, and knowledge sharing predicted employee retention that is measured by supervisor support, coworkers support, and flexible working arrangements. One of the implications of this study is that managers of telecom companies should liaise with their board of directors to make funds available that would be used to train employees to acquire relevant knowledge that is needed in the telecom industry.

Abstract:
In recent years a strong drive towards the miniaturization of nonlinear optics has been motivated by the functionalities it could empower in integrated devices. Among these, the upconversion of near-infrared photons to the visible and their manipulation is fundamental to downscale optical information. We propose a dual-beam scheme whereby a pulse at the telecom frequency ω (1550 nm wavelength) is mixed with its frequency-doubled replica at 2ω. When the two pump pulses are superimposed on a nonlinear, all-dielectric metasurface two coherent frequency-tripling pathways are excited: third-harmonic generation (THG, ω+ω+ω) and sum-frequency generation (SFG, ω+2ω). Their coherent superposition at 3ω produces interference, which we enable by filtering the k-space with the metasurface diffraction. The steering of the emission among diffraction orders, is sensitive to the relative phase between the two pumps. Therefore, by exploiting the phase as a tuning knob, the upconverted signal can be switched between diffraction orders with an efficiency >90%. The proposed approach can be envisioned as an all-optical method to reroute upconverted telecom photons.

The telecom sector in India largely comprises of wireless connections for phones. As of today, there are approximately 21 network providers in the country with about 7 per each circle, each offering competitive pricing to the consumers. The main objective of the study is to provide an accurate role for the company executive in developing channel relations. Further to this, the study explores the strategies which can sustain a good working relationship between the company and its channel members in the mobile telecom sector. The constructs identified for developing sustainable relationships were Setting distribution objectives, Channel design, Logistics, Image Building, Inventory management, Channel management, Payment & credit, Promotional assistance, Setting targets, Coverage frequency , Motivating channel members to perform. The sample selected contained distributors from the Mobile telecom sector and company executives/channel managers of leading telecom companies. Factor analysis and Friedman’s test was applied. The findings revealed a correlation in attitude between distributors and the executives. Motivating distributors was rated as the most important strategy by the company. The distributors felt that all channel partners needed to have positive attitude towards the channel while company executives felt that aggression made channel members perform effectively. Such findings will be of use to mobile telecom companies who are new entrants to the Indian market and to existing companies who plan to expand their coverage.

L'objectif de cette thèse est d'explorer le potentiel des impuretés complexes de carbone dans le silicium (G-centers) pour des applications dans les technologies quantiques. Ce défaut ponctuel a été initialement mis en évidence dans des échantillons de Si riches en carbone soumis à une irradiation électronique à haute énergie suivie d'un recuit à haute température. Une caractéristique clé des centers-G est leur émission infrarouge, correspondant à l'importante longueur d'onde de la bande O des télécommunications optiques qui s'étend entre 1260-1360 nm. Nous avons démontré que nous sommes capables de créer des centres G individuels par implantation ionique dans du SOI, du 28Si isotopiquement purifié sur isolant, et des nanostructures photoniques telles que des résonateurs diélectriques de Mie vers des sources intégrées de photons uniques dans le silicium émettant dans la gamme de longueur d'onde des télécommunications. Par lithographie optique et de gravure au plasma, associée à un démouillage à l'état solide de silicium cristallin ultra-mince sur isolant, afin de former des résonateurs de Mie monocristallins. En intégrant des centres G émetteurs de lumière dans les antennes en Si, j'ai conçu l'émission de lumière en réglant la dose de carbone, l'énergie du faisceau et la taille des îlots afin d'optimiser le couplage entre les émetteurs et les résonances de Mie. L'émission de lumière directionnelle à 120 K a été démontrée expérimentalement et confirmée par des simulations FDT. Nous estimons qu'avec un couplage optimal de l'émission des centres G avec les antennes résonantes, une efficacité de collecte d'environ 90 % peut être atteinte en utilisant un objectif conventionnel
The aim of this thesis it to explore the potential of complex carbon impurities in silicon (G-centers) for applications in quantum technologies. This point defect was originally highlighted in carbon-rich Si samples undergoing high-energy electron irradiation followed by high temperature annealing. A key feature of G-centers is their infrared emission, matching the important optical telecommunications wavelength O-band spreading between 1260-1360 nm. Through my PhD work we have demonstrated that we are able to create individual G-centers by ion implantation in conventional silicon on insulator, isotopically purified 28Si on insulator, and embed these emitters in photonic nanostructures such as dielectric Mie resonators. We developed a low-resolution optical lithography and plasma etching method joined with solid state dewetting of monocrystalline, ultra-thin, silicon on insulator to form monocrystalline, atomically-smooth, Mie resonators in well-controlled and large, periodic arrays.By integrating light emitting G-centers within the Si-based antennas we engineered the light emission by tuning carbon dose, beam energy and islands size in order to optimize the coupling between the emitters and the Mie resonances in space and frequency. directional (Huygens-like) light emission at 120 K was demonstrated experimentally and confirmed by finite difference time domain simulations. We estimate that, with an optimal coupling of the G-centers emission with the resonant antennas, a collection efficiency of about 90% can be reached using a conventional objective lens

Abstract:
An increasing adoption of digital signal processing (DSP) in optical fiber telecommunication has brought to the fore several interesting DSP enabled modulation formats. One such format is orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which has seen great success in wireless and wired RF applications, and is being actively investigated by several research groups for use in optical fiber telecom. In this dissertation, I present three implementations of OFDM for elastic optical networking and distributed network control. The first is a field programmable gate array (FPGA) based real-time implementation of a version of OFDM conventionally known as intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) OFDM. I experimentally demonstrate the ability of this transmission system to dynamically adjust bandwidth and modulation format to meet networking constraints in an automated manner. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first real-time software defined networking (SDN) based control of an OFDM system. In the second OFDM implementation, I experimentally demonstrate a novel OFDM transmission scheme that supports both direct detection and coherent detection receivers simultaneously using the same OFDM transmitter. This interchangeable receiver solution enables a trade-off between bit rate and equipment cost in network deployment and upgrades. I show that the proposed transmission scheme can provide a receiver sensitivity improvement of up to 1.73 dB as compared to IMDD OFDM. I also present two novel polarization analyzer based detection schemes, and study their performance using experiment and simulation. In the third implementation, I present an OFDM pilot-tone based scheme for distributed network control. The first instance of an SDN-based OFDM elastic optical network with pilot-tone assisted distributed control is demonstrated. An improvement in spectral efficiency and a fast reconfiguration time of 30 ms have been achieved in this experiment. Finally, I experimentally demonstrate optical re-timing of a 10.7 Gb/s data stream utilizing the property of bound soliton pairs (or "soliton molecules") to relax to an equilibrium temporal separation after propagation through a nonlinear dispersion alternating fiber span. Pulses offset up to 16 ps from bit center are successfully re-timed. The optical re-timing scheme studied here is a good example of signal processing in the optical domain and such a technique can overcome the bandwidth bottleneck present in DSP. An enhanced version of this re-timing scheme is analyzed using numerical simulations.

Abstract:
With increasing demands on network reliability and speed, network suppliers need to effectivize their communications algorithms. Frequency measurements are a core part of mobile network communications, increasing their effectiveness would increase the effectiveness of many network processes such as handovers, load balancing, and carrier aggregation. This study examines the possibility of using supervised learning to predict the signal of inter-frequency measurements by investigating various learning algorithms and pre-processing techniques. We found that random forests have the highest predictive performance on this data set, at 90.7\% accuracy. In addition, we have shown that undersampling and varying the discriminator are effective techniques for increasing the performance on the positive class on frequencies where the negative class is prevalent. Finally, we present hybrid algorithms in which the learning algorithm for each model depends on attributes of the training data set. These algorithms perform at a much higher efficiency in terms of memory and run-time without heavily sacrificing predictive performance.

cette thèse porte sur l'étude d'un accéléromètre à ondes de matière fonctionnant à bord d'un avion effectuant des vols paraboliques et permettant des expériences en micro-gravité (0-g). Un interféromètre à atomes de 87Rb refroidis par laser, et dont les états quantiques sont manipulés à l'aide de transitions Raman stimulées, constitue l'élément physique du capteur. Lors de la conception du dispositif expérimental, un effort particulier a été apporté au choix d'une source laser transportable, stable, et robuste. Nous démontrons pour la première fois le fonctionnement aéroporté d'un senseur inertiel à ondes de matière, à la fois en 0-g et durant les phases de gravité des vols (1-g). Nous proposons une technique combinant le signal de l'interféromètre à celui d'accéléromètres mécaniques auxiliaires pour effectuer des mesures au dela de la dynamique intrinsèque du capteur atomique. Nous expliquons comment bénéficier du haut niveau de sensibilité de l'interféromètre dans l'avion, et indiquons des voies d'améliorations significatives de notre dispositif pour le futur. En 0-g, nous montrons une amélioration de la sensibilité de l'accéléromètre jusque 2 x 10-4 m.s-2 à une seconde, et étudions une réjection des vibrations de l'avion à l'aide d'un interféromètre à quatre impulsions Raman. L'objectif de notre projet consiste en un test du principe d'universalité de la chute libre avec un double accéléromètre à atomes de 87Rb et de 39K. Notre système laser double-espèce emploie des composants optiques fibrés aux longueurs d'onde de 1.56 et 1.54 μm, ainsi qu'un doublage de fréquence pour obtenir la lumière utile à 780 et 767 nm pour le refroidissement et la manipulation des deux atomes. Nous étudions théoriquement la sensibilité d'une mesure de leur différence d'accélération en tenant compte des vibrations de l'avion, et précisons comment une résolution de l'ordre de 10-10 m.s-2 pourra être atteinte dans le futur avec notre expérience aéroportée.

Using data mining technique to explore the customer service characteristics from telecom business order processing database is an issue worth studying. This paper uses the “Mining Frequent Patterns without Candidate Generation” algorithm and uses FP-tree structure to construct customer frequent pattern data tree, and uses FP-growth method to generate the frequent patterns to see whether the frequent patterns can be discovered and are valuable. Also by making several improvements on the approaches, we are able to broaden and multiply the basic algorithm value, such as classifying the customer service data, applying constraints and different minimum support thresholds for each class to prune frequent patterns properly and effectively, and creating a DGFP ( Dynamically Generate Frequent Patterns ), a tool to let users interactively online generate frequent patterns dynamically.

Single-photon frequency conversion for quantum interface plays an important role in quantum communications and networks, which is crucial for the realization of quantum memory, faithful entanglement swapping and quantum teleportation. In this chapter, we will present our recent experiments about single-photon frequency conversion based on quadratic nonlinear processes. Firstly, we demonstrated spectrum compression of broadband single photons at the telecom wavelength to the near-visible window, marking a critical step towards coherent photonic interface. Secondly, we demonstrated the nonlinear interaction between two chirped broadband single-photon-level coherent states, which may be utilized to achieve heralding entanglement at a distance. Finally, we theoretically introduced and experimentally demonstrated single-photon frequency conversion in the telecom band, enabling switching of single photons between dense wavelength-division multiplexing channels. Moreover, quantum entanglement between the photon pair is maintained after the frequency conversion. Our researches have realized three significant quantum interfaces via single-photon frequency conversion, which hold great promise for the development of quantum communications and networks.

Before the war in Europe started in 1939, I worked as an engineer in the Dollis Hill communications research laboratories of what was then the British Post Office and is now British Telecom. During the war I continued to work in the laboratories; luckily I was not conscripted into the armed forces. Early in 1942 I was directed to go to GCHQ, the Government Communications Headquarters, then at Bletchley Park. I was told that there I would be briefed concerning some top-secret work which they wanted our laboratories to do for them. At Bletchley Park I met Alan Turing. Turing was working on Enigma at that time, and it was he who wanted the top-secret work done—a machine to assist with decoding Enigma messages once the Bombe had produced the message settings. From then until the end of the war, I was a frequent visitor to GCHQ. In the early years of the war, Alan Turing had saved Britain from defeat by the U-boats, by breaking the Enigma code used by the German Navy to communicate by radio with their ships at sea. Radio broadcasting is the only possible way of maintaining contact with mobile units like ships, tanks, and troops, but it is not secret—the transmissions can be intercepted by anyone with a suitable radio receiver. Therefore the messages must be encrypted before transmission. Even then the transmissions are secure only so long as the code remains unbroken by the enemy. The Germans were very sure that their high-grade ciphers could not be broken! British intelligence services had many radio receiving stations at home and abroad, listening continuously to German military radio broadcasts. These stations sent the coded messages they intercepted to Bletchley Park. In 1940 Bletchley Park started to receive teleprinter messages in a code that they could not recognise. The Germans had invented a new coding machine specifically for teleprinter messages. Messages typed into this machine in plain language were automatically encoded before being transmitted. At the receiving end an identical machine automatically decoded the message and printed the plaintext on paper tape.
