Abstract:
In a book on preventing early pregnancy and poor reproductive outcomes in developing countries, the World Health Organisation (2011) declares that ‘adolescent pregnancy’ contributes to maternal, perinatal and infant mortality, and to a vicious cycle of poverty and ill-health. This statement reflects the common public assumption that ‘teenage pregnancy’ represents an individual, social, health, educational and financial risk that requires remediation. This kind of public perception is spurred by media coverage in which young girls with large protruding stomachs are etched in profile and stories of calamity are told (e.g. Time (21 June 2005) magazine). And yet the very notion of 'teenage pregnancy' is a relatively recent one. Depending on the country one talks about, it has been around since between the 1960s and 1980s. In the United States, for example, the rise of ‘teenage pregnancy’ as a social problem was associated with a shift in gendered power relations. Prior to the late 1960s the morally loaded concepts of 'unwed mother' and 'illegitimate child' were used to describe young women who conceived. For the most part, young pregnant women were excluded from society, with the accompanying shame around the lack of proper conjugal arrangements. The use of the term 'teenage pregnancy' removed the implied moral judgment and replaced it with seeming scientific neutrality. Young pregnant women now became publicly visible and thus the object of scientific scrutiny (Arney & Bergen, 1984).

Abstract:
The increasing proportion of teenage girls of West Indian origin presenting for legal NHS abortions at the two teaching hospitals in a district of South London prompted the setting up of this study (1979-81, funded by the DHSS). The study's main aims were to ascertain whether, in fact, the proportion of girls of West Indian origin was higher than would be expected in the district, which has a sizable population of long-settled West Indian immigrants; if so, to identify the most important contributory factors and to make appropriate recommendations for changes or improvements in the services, in order to bring about a reduction in the number of unwanted pregnancies. In all, 550 teenage girls were interviewed: 220 after termination of their pregnancies, and 217 after the birth of their babies; a small comparison group of 113 teenagers who had never been pregnant was recruited in the district's hospital and community family planning clinics. Interviews were conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire and the results compared, where possible, with other similar studies. This survey data, together with systematic and non-systematic observations made throughout the period of the study, were used to give support to the hypotheses. About a third of both groups of pregnant teenagers were of West Indian origin. This was higher than anticipated. Since socio-economic differences did not provide immediate explanations, certain hypotheses were tested which derived from the apparent importance of types of inter-personal relationships (specifically, mother-daughter and boy-girl) as predictors of the risk of a teenage girl experiencing an unplanned and initially unwanted pregnancy. The method of contraception (if any) used by a teenager at the time of her first sexual experience, provided a useful indicator of the type of relationship a young couple had. Girls of West Indian origin appeared to find themselves when they became sexually active, in "segregated" relationships with their partners (as opposed to "integrated" relationships), relationships typified from the study's viewpoint, by the non-use of any form of contraception, at least in the relationship's initial stages. Once having identified what seemed to be a key to the problem (exemplified in the classification of relationship types devised) the question of how best to utilise this knowledge arose. It was suggested that the study's classification of relationship types could provide a useful frame of reference for those health professionals most closely concerned with young women and young men. Recommended changes in the services centred upon changing the attitudes of service workers towards young people, in the hope of improving their image and making them more approachable. It was suggested that a lay visitor on the wards who would also be available to give advice during those family planning clinic sessions directed specifically at young people, would provide invaluable support for teenage girls who had experienced an unplanned pregnancy.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
Globally, teenage pregnancy remains a disturbing phenomenon which impacts on the lives of teenagers, their families and society as a whole. Numerous attempts at addressing the problem have seen a decline in fertility rates but agreement still exists that the incidence of young girls bearing children is unacceptably high. Studies conducted over the years have emphasised both the causes and consequences of teenage births. Many studies too have explored the benefits of preventative strategies. Yet, despite all this, teenage pregnancy remains a cause for concern with many teenage girls remaining sexually active after a first pregnancy, and exposing themselves to subsequent pregnancies and births. This study was focused on teenage girls who had experienced unintended repeat pregnancies. Through the research a deeper understanding of the meanings that female teenagers ascribe to repeat pregnancies, were sought. A sample group of teenage mothers were allowed to take a step back from their experience of the repeat pregnancy; to think deeply about the experience, and to reflect on what they had learnt and how it has impacted on their current lives. The researcher employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive, explorative design in order to obtain a rich description of the experiences of teenage mothers who have been through a repeat pregnancy. The goal of the study was to explore and describe the reflections of these teenage mothers who had experienced unintended, repeat pregnancies. Data was obtained through semi-structured individual interviews where an interview guide was used. The data was analysed according to the steps outlined by Creswell (2009). Findings were noted and recommendations made. These recommendations are designed for role-players involved with teenagers and youth in general. Emphasis was placed on recommendations to professionals, like educators, healthcare workers and social workers who are at the coalface of dealing with teenagers who engage in sexual activity. Finally, recommendations for further research were made.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the problems that pregnant teenagers encounter at school and at home while they are trying to complete their high school education. Data were collected by in-depth interviews. Twenty pregnant adolescents, who were between the ages of 15 through 18, and were participants in a special teen pregnancy program were interviewed. The major findings in this study included the respondents': 1) unstable family life histories, 2) denial that they were pregnant, 3) need for self-identity as an adult, 4) conflict with parents and 5) motivation to complete their high school education. This study points to the need for more research on the problems that pregnant adolescents encounter in their everyday lives.

Abstract:
Thesis (MCur)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The alarming rate of teenage pregnancies among South Africans became a driving force for the researcher to investigate this particular phenomenon. The goal of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of pregnant teenagers about their pregnancy. Guided by the research question “ What are the experiences of pregnant teenagers about their pregnancy?” a scientific investigation was undertaken. The objectives set for the study were to determine their experience of their current pregnancy; to determine their knowledge of contraceptives; and to explore their experience regarding the services delivered by the health care workers. A phenomenological descriptive design with a qualitative approach was the most suitable scientific method to describe the experiences of pregnant teenagers who attend an antenatal clinic in Chatsworth, Kwazulu Natal. An interview guide or protocol that includes a list of open-ended questions based on the objectives, the literature review, and the professional experience of the researcher was designed and used to explore during each interview. The final sample consisted of ten participants. Experts in the field of nursing and research methodology were consulted to determine the feasibility and content of the study, to evaluate the research process and outcome. The researcher collected the data personally. Data was collected by means of individual interviews. The researcher did the transcription of the interviews. Ethical approval was obtained from Stellenbosch University and the relevant health authorities. Informed written consent was obtained from the participants. Parental permission was obtained for participants under the age of 18 years. Participants younger than 18 years of age also completed an assent form. Data that emerged from the data analysis was coded and categorised into sub-themes and themes. The researcher compiled a written account of the interpretations that emerged from the data analysis. In addition, member checking was done with each participant after individual interviews, to validate the transcribed data. The conceptual framework for this study was adapted from Maslow (1968). The findings suggest that there is a need for parental intervention as far as teenage pregnancy is concerned, financial difficulties associated with poverty was identified as one of the major contributing factor to teenage pregnancy, and attitudes of providers of contraceptives led to teenagers, not using contraceptives in some cases. It is recommended that services at the clinic be improved; health care workers undergo extensive training and education regarding teenage health and sexuality needs. Furthermore review and revitalisation of education programs at schools, to meet the needs of teenagers, which are constantly changing according to the times, are recommended. The involvement of parents and the community in combating issues surrounding teenage pregnancy is vital. Further research is recommended to find solutions to alleviate this problem of teenage pregnancy. All stakeholders need to work together to remedy this social problem as it is not an issue that can be dealt with in isolation.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A. (Clinical Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2012
Recent research has established that teenagers have the means to prevent pregnancy but many do not necessarily use them, because they are open to the idea of becoming pregnant, or have a desire to parent their own child. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between attachment and teenagers’ desire of becoming pregnant and parenting a child. The sample of the study, selected through convenience sampling, comprised 455, 14 and 15 year old registered female learners from selected urban and rural high schools in Mopani District, Limpopo Province. Findings from structural equation modeling indicate that both mother and father attachment do not influence teenagers’ idealization about pregnancy and parenting. Mother trust had a statistically significant relationship with attitudes towards pregnancy. Trust for both mother and father also had a significant relationship with parental readiness. Alienation to mother had a significant association with teenagers preparedness to become parents. Socio-economic status was found to be associated with teenagers’ idealization of pregnancy and their report of being physically and emotionally ready to become parents. This study has found a relationship between the Trust and Alienation dimensions of attachment with attitudes towards pregnancy and parental readiness. Key words: Attachment; socio-economic status; pregnancy; idealization; parental readiness

Abstract:
Pregnancy in unmarried teenaged girls in America today is a growing concern to health care workers, educators, government officials and parents. Pregnancy during adolescence is not an issue because births to teenagers are increasing but because teenage pregnancy is no longer a societal option. This paper describes adolescent pregnancy from within the context of the subculture of adolescence and from the perspective of 16 pregnant, teenaged girls. The findings revealed a description of the life experiences of pregnant teenagers and introduced health-care issues that were not previously disclosed in other research studies of pregnant teens. The anthropological concepts of liminality, the double-bind, social labeling, and schizmogenesis served to guide the research. The concepts also helped to explain many behaviors and observations that were made of the informants throughout the research. An ethnographic approach using participant observation and ethnographic interviews was used to collect data from 16 pregnant, unmarried, teenaged girls in a large Southwestern, urban area. The informants ranged in age from 14 through 19 years and represented various backgrounds. Nine informants resided in a home for unwed, pregnant teenagers with the remainder residing in diverse locations. Data analyses occurred concurrently with data collection as part of an ongoing process. Data were ordered and transcribed within a framework designed to enhance thematic analysis. Transcribed interview and observational data were transferred onto the Ethnograph, a data-management software program. Data were coded using substantive and conceptual codes. Codes were linked according to patterns of association and frequency of occurrence which in turn led to the revealing of recurrent thematic patterns. In all, eight themes were revealed: (1) pregnancy is bad; (2) loneliness; (3) waiting it out; (4) dependency; (5) looking bad; (6) giving up baby; (7) losing what was; and (8) losing control. Thematic content also disclosed many inconsistencies and double-binds between the larger Western macroculture and adolescent subculture. Ethnographic themes and expressions of these themes provided new information for constructing health-related interventions with pregnant teens.

Abstract:
Teenage pregnancy is an important health and social problem in South Africa. Despite declining trends of fertility rates in last two decades, the pregnancy among school girls remains steadily high in South Africa. Teenage pregnancy had negative impacts on various aspects of socio-economic well being of school girls. Aim: To determine the proportion of teenage pregnancy among high school girls and to identify the possible factors that influence teenage pregnancy in Mthatha region during the year 2009. Materials & Methods: This is an observational cross sectional, analytic study of teenage pregnancy conducted among high school teenage girls in the Mthatha region of South Africa. Result: A total of 1150 teenage girls from 15 to 19 years of ages responded from seven high schools in the Mthatha region of South Africa. In total 113 (10%) of teenage high school girls were currently mothers or had previously been pregnant. The proportions of those who had ever been pregnant increased significantly with age. The risk of falling pregnant among public high school teenage girls had two times higher compared to private high school teenage girls. Condoms were the most common method of contraception whereas the oral pills were the least common in practice. About half of teenage girls who had ever been pregnant had an abortion and of this one-third had had a backstreet/illegal abortion. The frequency of substance use was significantly higher among teenage girls who had ever been pregnant. A significant correlation was found between low socio-economic status, public schools and teenage pregnancy in this study. Conclusion: Teenage pregnancy is common among high school girls from 15 to 19 years of age in the Mthatha Region, South Africa. Poor socio-economic family conditions, lack of contraceptive use, early sexual maturation, risky behaviour, lack of knowledge about sexuality and reproductive health, multiple sexual partners and substance use were the common contributing factors of teenage pregnancy.

Abstract:
Magister Public Health - MPH (Public Health)
Teenage pregnancy remains a complex issue globally. According to the World Health Organisation (2014), the average global birth rate of girls aged 15-19 years was 49 per 1000 births reported globally. In South Africa, the general household survey conducted in 2014 revealed that 5.6% of females 14-19 years were reported to have been pregnant in 2013, with teenage pregnancy increasing by age from 0.8% for the age group of 14 years to 11.9% for teenagers aged 19 years. In South Africa, a range of health policies and programs exist to address teenage pregnancy, including school-based sex education, peer education programmes, adolescent friendly clinic initiatives and mass media interventions. Despite such initiatives, the number of teenagers becoming pregnant remains high. Teenage pregnancy reported in Mangaung district is 7%, which is three times more than the provincial target of 2% for teenage pregnancy. This research therefore aimed to explore the reasons behind teenage pregnancy in Heidedal, Mangaung District, Free State Province, South Africa. Two in- depth interviews were conducted, one with twelve teenage mothers and the other with four key informants who were selected based on insight and experience they possess in working with teenagers. The key informants suitable for the study included a nurse, life orientation teacher, ward councillor and a counsellor working for a non-governmental organization that supports the implementation of youth programmes in the health facility. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data and key themes, afterwards concepts were interpreted so that explanations could be constructed to answer the research aim and objectives. The study aimed to contribute to understanding reasons behind the high teenage pregnancy rates in Mangaung District. This information will be useful to policy makers in developing policies and strategies that will address factors identified to be influencing teenage pregnancy.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to portray detailed accounts of how pregnant teenagers and teenage mothers in a school-based service define their situation in the context of the policies and services that frame their lives. The research is based in Malta, a small Catholic island that has undergone rapid socio-demographic changes in the past two decades that have shaped the context of teenage pregnancy. Through this study, I focus on developing an understanding of pregnant teenagers' and teenage mothers' perceptions on their sexual, reproductive and mothering choices and experiences, their views and experiences of education, employment and welfare and the processes by which 'oppression' and ' agency' are manifested in their lives. The theoretical underpinnings of this thesis draw from feminist maternal theory. An exploration of writings by prominent motherhood scholars has highlighted both the way women are oppressed as mothers, and the way motherhood can serve as a site of resistance. Furthermore, it has drawn attention to the importance of context in shaping the meaning and experiences of motherhood. The conceptual framework of this study relates to these theories through exploring both the ways in which young mothers' experiences are shaped by their gender and social location as well as the way they exercise power and agency through making rational and moral choices within their social circumstances. The methodology is based on a feminist critical ethnography, philosophically positioned in social constructivism. The fieldwork was undertaken over a sixteen month period in an alternative educational programme that offers both a pregnancy programme and a mother and baby club for new mothers. Through participant observation and semistructured interviews, I gathered data from 24 participants, ranging in age from 12 to 20 years, who attended either or both of these programmes. The emergent themes are centred on the way young mothers concurrently accepted, negotiated and challenged dominant ideas about motherhood. Through describing participants' pathways to motherhood and the way they practiced mothering, I demonstrate their awareness of the way they transgressed the boundaries of normative ideologies, and the way they defended their motherhood identity, as they simultaneously challenged negative stereotypes while attempting to assimilate through their mothering practices. I further outline the diverse relationship trajectories experienced by young mothers and how power struggles characterised most of the relationships with the men in their lives, whether as intimate partners or as their children's fathers. Within dynamics that were constantly shifting and evolving, the processes of oppression and agency interweaved as participants negotiated tensions in different aspects of their relationships. I also look at the education and employment experiences of these young mothers, their expectations and aspirations in this arena as well as their views on welfare. Placing the young women's representations at the centre, this thesis further illustrates the heterogeneity of teenage mothers' experiences and emphasises the fact that a 'one size fits all' policy approach is not always helpful in terms of responding effectively to teenage mothers' needs.

Abstract:
A dissertation submitted in the Faculty of Education in partial fulfilment of the requirements for a Masters degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2013.
This study examined the relationship between the Child Support Grant (CSG) and teenage pregnancy. The first objective of the study was to establish the relationship, if any, between teenage pregnancy and the Child Support Grant. The second objective was to determine whether or not the variable of educational level, religious affiliation, and location play a role in teenage pregnancy and the support grant. In order to achieve the aims of the study, the researcher constructed his own scale. The study used a quantitative methodology to establish the relationship between Child Support Grant and teenage pregnancy. Questionnaires were used to collect data. The questionnaires were distributed to fifty participants representing the total sample of the study. These questionnaires were correctly completed and were analysed using SPSS. The chi-square measure of association was used to test for the relationship between CSG and teenage pregnancy. The findings of the study indicated that teenagers differ in terms of whether there is a relationship between CSG and teenage pregnancy. Forty eight per cent of the participants were found to have a negative view on the notion that there is a relationship between CSG and teenage pregnancy, and fifty two per cent were favourably disposed. However, the difference was not statistically significant. In answering the second research question, this study revealed that variables such as educational level, location and religious affiliation did not have any influence on child support grant. This was confirmed by statistical tests performed. The limitations of the study were identified and suggestions for further research were documented.

Teenage pregnancy in high schools is one of the major concerns among education stakeholders in Lesotho. This observation warrants an investigation into how teachers perceive this phenomenon. The study sought among other things to identify factors teachers perceive to be contributing to teenage pregnancy, including the consequences. A descriptive research design was used and purposive sampling was employed to identify participating schools and participants from the Qacha's Nek district of Lesotho. A purposive sample was deemed appropriate for this study. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire and was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of this study indicate that teachers have negative perceptions towards teenage pregnancy. The findings of this study also reveal that factors such as gender, age, grade level and teaching experience influence perceptions of teachers towards teenage pregnancy. The study also reveals factors that teachers conceive of as causes of teenage pregnancy, including the consequences of teenage pregnancy.

Hosie, Alison C. S. "A comparative exploration of social policy relating to teenage pregnancy in Finland and Scotland." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/16786.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to comparatively explore a selection of policies relating to teenage pregnancy in Finland and Scotland. Although much comparative research has explored teenage pregnancy and policy relating to it in England with other countries, very little work has explored either the policy situation within Scotland or comparatively explored Scottish policy responses to teenage pregnancy with other countries. Although the trends in teenage pregnancy rates are similar between England and Scotland, there are noted policy differences between the two countries that warrant further exploration of the situation particular to Scotland. Finland presents an interesting comparison for Scotland, in particular due to a number of important constants that exist including; the sexual behaviour rates of young people, the legal age of heterosexual consent and similar ages of first intercourse, and yet considerably lower rates of teenage pregnancy. Between the 1970s and 1980s the rate of teenage pregnancy declined in both Finland and Scotland. Since that time Finland has witnessed further decline, whilst the rate in Scotland has remained relatively unchanged. Utilising a variety of primary and secondary data including in-depth interviews with key personnel at three levels of policy development and implementation: government, local authority/ municipality and schools, as well as policy documentation from both countries, this research has located, mapped and comparatively analysed three areas of policy relating to teenage pregnancy: sex education, sexual health and education. The findings of this research illustrate that policy developed in Finland since the 1970s has taken a pragmatic approach to the prevention of unintended teenage pregnancy, combining sex education provision in a range of core subjects throughout the curriculum at the school level with a national system of school nurses located in school-based clinics. Additionally, the Finnish education system was structured in such a way from 1970 so as to olf"fer a high, level of vocational and academic choice at the school level and actively encourage a high level of continuation beyond the age of sixteen. In relation to policy development in Scotland, the findings of this research illustrate that whilst the foundations for successful future policy development are now present, policy developed prior to the mid-1990s failed to meet the needs of young people in Scotland in relation to the provision of sex education, sexual health services and educational choice at the school level beyond academically orientated examinations. Since the mid-1990s there have been changes in the direction of policy within the areas under exploration. Whilst a level of complacency appears to have set in with regard to the lower level of teenage abortion in Finland, the opposite has been occurring in Scotland, with raised awareness of the sexual health rights and needs of young people being placed at the forefront of policy development. As this thesis has detailed, the various changes have the potential to influence the rates of teenage pregnancy in both countries, negatively in Finland and positively in Scotland. In addition to highlighting potential policy options to aid in the future reduction of unintended teenage pregnancy in Scotland, a better understanding of the relationship that each area of policy has to teenage pregnancy has also been developed within this thesis. The findings contribute to the on-going debate concerning a number of important areas, first, the provision of `effective' sex education, second, the necessity to base sexual health services on the needs of young people and third, the importance that continued education post-16 can play as an indirect means to delaying pregnancy and parenthood.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University 2005
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the current study was to undertake a phenomenological investigation on teenage motherhood and to learn how this experience forms part of the teenage mother's life. Using the snowball sampling method, five women aged between 26 and 35 years were selected to participate in the study. All the five women became mothers during their teenage years. Indepth interviews were conducted in Northern Sotho and Tshivenda depending on the language preference and fluency of the participant. The interviews were audio-taped, and later transcribed and translated. A phenomenological method of analysis was used to transform the original data into natural meaning units (NMUs) which were further interrogated so as to distil central sociological themes that were associated with the experience of teenage motherhood. Apart from the finding that the participants got pregnant when they were aged between 16 and 18, five sociological themes associated with teenage motherhood were identified. These are: • Lack of knowledge about sexual relationships contributes to teenage pregnancy and motherhood. • Early childbearing has a negative impact on the teenage mother's social relationships. • Teenage mothers tend to experience emotional problems after delivery of their babies. • Teenage motherhood has a long term disruptive effect on the teenage mother's educational and occupational opportunities. • Teenage motherhood leads to significant lifestyle changes for those who have been through the experience. In view of the above themes, sexual education both at school and at home, is suggested here as a more viable option to help minimise the risk of teenage motherhood in society. Whilst other options like abortion and the newly introduced child support grant are also available to the teenage mother, these are not considered favourable.

Teenage pregnancy is an ever increasing problem that is facing South Africa. Curbing teenage pregnancy is the great challenge that is facing the country as a whole. This study investigated teenagers* perceptions of early teenage pregnancy and their suggested solutions. Kohlberg's theory of moral reasoning was used to understand their reasoning. A total of 40 females from semi-rural school and semi-urban school were randomly selected to participate in the study. Participants were in grade five to grade eight. Questionnaires with open-ended questions were utilized to collect data. The qualitative data was in the form of written words, the data was analyzed, categories and put into themes which were later generalized. Whereas the quantitative data was coded into numerical forms, and to which statistical analyses may be applied to determine the significance of the findings. Teenage perceptions about teenage pregnancy were discovered, factors that contribute to teenage pregnancy and the possible suggestions were supplied in the later stages of the study. In conclusion, teenage pregnancy is not only affecting the government, it also affects teenagers themselves, families, communities and the country as a whole. To curb this pandemic, we need to work together as citizen of South Africa to come up with strategies or ways of dealing with this current problem.

Abstract:

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect pregnancy has on a schoolgirl’s education. The focus was on secondary schools in the Pietermaritzburg district in KwaZulu-Natal. An introductory literature review was provided of the reasons for the high prevalence of pregnancy amongst schoolgirls. Research conducted during 2011 in South Africa has found that by the age of 18 years more than thirty percent (31,5%) of girls have given birth at least once. At a meeting on June 2012, the MEC for education in KwaZulu-Natal acknowledged that schoolgirls are falling pregnant in their thousands. Conditions under which the problem of schoolgirl pregnancy occurs is not homogeneous and may vary from one demographic background to another. Schoolgirl pregnancy is mostly associated with frequent sex without reliable or no contraception, peer pressure, inadequate knowledge about sexuality, sexual coercion, proof of fertility, poor socio-economic conditions and promiscuity. Schoolgirl pregnancy affects the educational success of most teenage girls in South Africa. Although a schoolgirl is allowed to return to school after the birth of her baby she is faced with many challenges in trying to cope with the demands of motherhood and schooling simultaneously. Therefore many pregnant girls drop out of school and continue the poverty cycle in which they are trapped. Research has established that pregnancy and motherhood have a profound impact on the mother and child by placing limits on her educational achievement and economic stability as well as predisposing her to single parenthood. For the purpose of the empirical investigation a self-structured questionnaire was utilized to obtain educators perceptions concerning the effect of pregnancy on a schoolgirl’s education. A quantitative descriptive analysis was undertaken of the completed questionnaires. In conclusion a summary of the study and findings emanating from the literature and empirical investigation were presented. Based on these findings the following recommendations were made: • The Department of Education must ensure that an effective sexuality programme is offered at all schools. The programme should focus on prevention of pregnancy and second chance opportunities for schoolgirl mothers. • The government in collaboration with education departments should establish health clinics that are linked to schools.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Most portrayals in the media, research and clinical literature of teenage pregnancy and motherhood concentrate on the negative consequences for the teenager, the baby and society. Although these portrayals do capture the experience of some of the cases, they fail to grasp the complexity of these teenagers' life choices and the alternative positive impact teenage pregnancy and motherhood may have on their lives. This qualitative study focuses on the autobiographical narrative of the teenager as she experiences pregnancy and becomes a mother. The sample consists of eight participants from a rural community outside Stellenbosch, South Africa. One pre-birth interview as well as three interviews after the birth of the baby were audio taped and transcribed. Responses showed significant data with regards to the impact of the emotional experience of teenage pregnancy and motherhood on the teenager, as well as her experience of herself, changes in her life as well as the nature of the pregnancy and motherhood experience. To date, the literature does not account for the unique and individual nature of how teenage pregnancy and motherhood impacts the individual. In contrast, this research illustrates the changes in the thoughts, emotions and behaviours of teenagers when they become mothers.

Macleod, Catriona. "The conjugalisation of reproduction in South African teenage pregnancy literature." Psychology in Society (PINS), 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1008265.

Full text
Abstract:
The “conjugalisation of reproduction”, in which childbearing is legitimated only within a marital alliance, underlies some of the pathologisation of the single, female-headed household in the pre-democracy South African teenage pregnancy literature. I utilise a poststructural feminist framework that draws on elements of Derrida’s and Foucault’s work to analyse the conjugalisation of reproduction in South African research. The conjugalisation of reproduction relies on (1) the insidious “unwed” signifier which interpenetrates the term “teenage pregnancy”, allowing the scientific censure of non-marital adolescent re-production without the invocation of moralisation, and (2) the fixation of the husband-wife and parents-children axes of alliance as the main elements for the deployment of sexuality and reproduction in the form of the family. Pregnant teenagers are, in Derridean terms, undecidables: they are neither children (owing to their reproductive status) nor adults (owing to their age), but simultaneously both. Marriage is the authority that decides them, allowing them to join the ranks of adult reproductive subjects.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPH)-- University of Limpopo, 2012.
Background: A number of initiatives have been implemented in South Africa to prevent and reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy. These includes sex education as part of the Life Skills Programme in schools, roll-out of Youth Friendly Services (YFS) in government clinics and funding programmes such as Lovelife which combines a highly visible sustained national multi-media sex education and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns. However, these campaigns do not reach most teenagers in the rural areas such as in Moshana village. Teenage pregnancy has been recognized as one of the major problems affecting the learners of Mpolokang High School Aim: The aim of the study was to explore factors contributing to teenage pregnancy within the secondary school environment Methods: This was an exploratory and descriptive study. Focus group interviews were conducted with the learners from Grade 10 – 12, aged 15 - 19. Results: It was found that factors contributing to teenage pregnancy at Mpolokang High School were openness and transparency, sexual practices, access to the government grant, peer influence, lack of recreational facilities, substance abuse by the learners and attitudes of Health Care Workers at Moshana clinic. Conclusion: From this study, it can be concluded that although sex education is now part of the Life Skills programme in schools, teenagers still fall pregnant due to lack of openness and transparency when discussing sexual matters.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to investigate the life-world of the schoolgirl-mother. The study commenced with an orientation framework in which the problem of the high incidence of teenage pregnancies was analyzed. The orientation to this study is followed by a chapter concerning the design of the research, substantiating the choice of format, methods of data collection and analysis. A qualitative research method was chosen on account of its explorative, descriptive and contextual nature. Data was collected by means of interviews with schoolgirl-mothers. The data was analyzed by using a phenomenological approach in which emerging themes were identified. This was followed by a literature review to compare and complement the qualitative data analysis. The results from the qualitative research showed that adolescent girls are not adequately informed about the meaning of the onset of menarche and this lack of authentic knowledge may result in teenage pregnancy while still in school. Most girls fell pregnant between the ages of 15 and 17 years. Schoolgirl-mothers also indicated their lack of knowledge concerning the availability and use of contraceptives. The study revealed a relation between socio-economic status and teenage pregnancy and a recurrence of adolescent parents with each new generation. Teenage pregnancy is associated with interruption in schooling and school dropout. In the literature review the life-world of the schoolgirl-mother was discussed. She can only form a meaningful life-world by forming meaningful relationships with the self, other people, things and ideas and religion. Being a teenage mother causes these relationships to become impaired because the girl is not mature enough or emotionally ready for the responsibilities of motherhood. The study concludes with findings from the research and the following recommendations were made: Accountable sexuality education must be available to all teenagers. Clinics must be easily accessible with adequately equipped personnel to assist teenagers on all aspects of sexuality.

Abstract:
American adolescents are no more sexually active than adolescents in other Western nations. Each year more than one million American teenagers become pregnant, which gives the United States the dubious distinction of leading the industrialized world in the highest rates of teenage pregnancy. With the number of adolescent pregnancies increasing yearly, the cost of healthcare has become a major concern for healthcare providers. Because the teen's viewpoint is different from that of an adult, this research study focused upon the issue of teen pregnancy through the eyes of the pregnant adolescent.Heideggerian phenomenology was used as the research methodology to acquire information regarding the lived experience of pregnancy for the single adolescent, with Heideggerdian hermeneutics used in the interpretation of interviews. A purposive sample of five single primipara adolescents living in a teen home, in a large metropolitan area of a Midwestern state was utilized. Each interview was given a number in order to protect the confidentially of the participant. Interviews were audio taped and were transcribed by the researcher. The audio tapes were destroyed at the end of the study. The data obtained were studied by the researcher and others familiar with Heideggerian hermeneutics. The data were analyzed according to the seven step method described by Diekelmann, Allen and Tanner (1989). The findings identified an overall constitutive pattern along with four common themes. The overall constitutive pattern which emerged was "Pregnancy as a diverse human experience." Along with the constitutive pattern identified were four other common themes: (a) Body image changes as being within oneself; (b) Being marked as a pregnant teenager; (c) Pregnancy as loss; and (d) Pregnancy as connectedness. Both the constitutive pattern and the common themes were validated by the adolescent interviewed. The conclusions of this study showed that teens were aware of the methods of contraception and pregnancy but were unaware of the impact pregnancy would have on the teen's being in the world.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D. (Social Work)) -- University of Limpopo, 2018
Teenage pregnancy is a social problem that affects and destroys the future of teenage girls, especially teenage learners. Its impact is not only felt by the teenage girls, but also by their families, schools, and the country in general. This study sought to develop an educational social group work model on teenage pregnancy for learners in schools in the North West province. To this effect, this study was anchored on five objectives, namely: to establish the extent of teenage pregnancy amongst learners in schools in the North West province; to assess factors that predispose learners to indulge in sexual activities despite the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases; to describe the roles of parents in the prevention of teenage pregnancy amongst learners; to identify prevention measures used by the schools to prevent teenage pregnancy; and to develop, implement, and evaluate an educational social group work model on teenage pregnancy for learners. The study adopted a mixed methods approach by combining the qualitative and quantitative paradigms. The population of the study consisted of learners, while school principals, deputy principals, Life Orientation teachers, and parents/guardians were the key informants. The findings of this study confirm that teenage pregnancy is a serious problem that continues to affect schools. All grades from the secondary schools that participated in this study reported cases of learner pregnancies. The grades with high reported cases include Grades 10, 11, and 12, while Grades 8 and 9 appeared to be the least affected. Furthermore, the findings indicate that male learners are most likely to father children with female learners. The development of an educational social group work model on teenage pregnancy for learners was achieved via a literature review and the empirical findings from learners and the key informants. Group work as a method of the social work profession was chosen in this study because it is intensive in nature, and the follow-up sessions provided a platform for the evaluation of social worker interventions and the performance of individual members and the entire group. The developed model was implemented and evaluated. Different topics were discussed during a marathon of eight

Abstract:
Generational cycles of teenage pregnancy trend among many families create economic, social, and health problems on teen parents and their families. Scholarly literature includes quantitative studies addressing the issue of teenage pregnancy but there is not many qualitative studies about the family cycle of teenage pregnancy among a highly-concentrated area of African American females in the Southern region of the United States. The life history theory and the socialization and social control theories of the intergenerational transmission of early childbearing served as the theoretical framework.. A qualitative case study is designed to identify factors that contributed to generational cycles of teenage pregnancy among families in the Southern region of the United States. Data were collected using questionnaires from 3 family triads of teenage mothers. Data were analyzed and display tables were created. The results indicated that participants had a lack of knowledge of proper contraceptive use and experienced peer pressure to engage in sexual behaviors. Teenagers looked at their mothers and sister's pregnancy in a favorable way making their pregnancy acceptable within families. Most participants felt teenagers should wait before becoming pregnant. Participants felt teenage mothers could overcome obstacles associated with teenage pregnancies. Pregnancy prevention programs may benefit from the results of this study through parenting programs to teach mothers, who were pregnant in their teen age, how to communicate with their teenage daughters about their sexual experiences.
