Abstract:
The aim of the phd consists in the elaboration of a theoritical frame work explaining how to organise public authorities initiatives in order to promote the technical progress within the national economy, taking into account the spatial and temporal dimensions of innovation processes. By coupling the notion of techno-economics network (ten) with the taxonomy of technology policies, it emerges that the success of the japanesse experience oriented to a "mission of diffusion" could constitute a referential for countries in search of an effective mutation of the state industrial action. This analysis is based on the building of a model identifying the ifnormation structure related to the dynamics of TENs which articulate interactions between the policy maker, the targeted beneficiaries and the whole national system of innovation. We introduce a spatial dimension within this model reflecting the public role ont he management of systemic frictions between innovative actors and territories. Moreover, the will of public authorites to build political areas bordering on techno-economics areas shaped by innovative actors, allows to wonder about the modalities of the sharing of the decision-making process between different public authorities which acting on differenciated level s of territorial competency, acting on differenciated levels of territorial competency, wish to implement a common strategy of "mission of diffusion"

Barraquand, Remi. "Designing Sociable Technologies." Phd thesis, Université de Grenoble, 2012. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00721779.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the design of sociable technologies and is divided into three main parts described below. In the first part, we introduce sociable technologies. We review our the definition of technology and propose categories of technologies according to the motivation underlying their design: improvement of control, improvement of communication or improvement of cooperation. Sociable technologies are then presented as an extension of techniques to improve cooperation. The design of sociable technologies are then discussed leading to the observation that acquisition of social common sense is a key challenge for designing sociable technologies. Finally, polite technologies are presented as an approach for acquiring social common sense. In the second part, we focus on the premises for the design of sociable technologies. A key aspect of social common sense is the ability to act appropriately in social situations. Associating appropriate behaviour with social situations is presented as a key method for implementing polite technologies. Reinforcement learning is proposed as a method for learning such associations and variation of this algorithm are experimentally evaluated. Learning the association between situation and behaviour relies on the strong assumption that mutual understanding of social situations can be achieved between technologies and people during interaction. We argue that in order to design sociable technologies, we must change the model of communication used by our technologies. We propose to replace the well-known code model of communication, with the ostensive-inferential model proposed by Sperber and Wilson. Hypotheses raised by this approach are evaluated in an experiment conducted in a smart environment, where, subjects by group of two or three are asked to collaborate with a smart environment in order to teach it how to behave in an automated meeting. A novel experimental methodology is presented: The Sorceress of Oz. The results collected from this experiment validate our hypothesis and provide insightful information for the design. We conclude by presenting, what we believe are, the premises for the design of sociable technologies. The final part of the thesis concerns an infrastructure for the design of sociable technologies. This infrastructure provides the support for three fundamental components. First, it provides the support for an inferential model of context. This inferential model of context is presented; a software architecture is proposed and evaluated in an experiment conducted in a smart-environment. Second, it provides the support for reasoning by analogy and introduces the concept of eigensituations. The advantage of this representation are discussed and evaluated in an experiment. Finally, it provides the support for ostensive-inferential communication and introduces the concept of ostensive interface.

An small-scale CHP system has been proposed coupling a single-staged gasification unit with a suitably matched energy recovery device, utilising biomass pellets. Biomass pelletisation is an established industry in Northern Europe however there is no standardisation governing the quality of the pellets produced. The first objective investigated the pressure pelletisation of switchgrass for five types of material preparation. The effects of pelletisation pressure and temperature on the quality of pellets were evaluated in terms of density, strength and durability.

Abstract:
The increasing demand for connectivity and broadband wireless access is leading to the fifth generation (5G) of cellular networks. The overall scope of 5G is greater in client width and diversity than in previous generations, requiring substantial changes to network topologies and air interfaces. This divergence from existing network designs is prompting a massive growth in research, with the U.S. government alone investing $400 million in advanced wireless technologies. 5G is projected to enable the connectivity of 20 billion devices by 2020, and dominate such areas as vehicular networking and the Internet of Things. However, many challenges exist to enable large scale deployment and general adoption of the cellular industries. In this dissertation, we propose three new additions to the literature to further the progression 5G development. These additions approach 5G from top down and bottom up perspectives considering interference modeling and physical layer prototyping. Heterogeneous deployments are considered from a purely analytical perspective, modeling co-channel interference between and among both macrocell and femtocell tiers. We further enhance these models with parameterized directional antennas and integrate them into a novel mixed point process study of the network. At the air interface, we examine Software-Defined Radio (SDR) development of physical link level simulations. First, we introduce a new algorithm acceleration framework for MATLAB, enabling real-time and concurrent applications. Extensible beyond SDR alone, this dataflow framework can provide application speedup for stream-based or data dependent processing. Furthermore, using SDRs we develop a localization testbed for dense deployments of 5G smallcells. Providing real-time tracking of targets using foundational direction of arrival estimation techniques, including a new OFDM based correlation implementation.

Abstract:
This thesis reports an investigation about range of intelligent tyre technologies. A piezoelectric transducer was utilized to measure tyre inner liner strain in the longitudinal direction. Tyre driving condition can be recognized from different tyre strain pattern data which is collected from the piezoelectric transducers. Tyre load, slip angle, and rolling speed can be identified from the tyre strain pattern throughout the tyre contact patch area strain pattern. A novel circumferential four-chamber tyre concept was designed, manufactured and tested in this study. These four-chamber prototypes can have independent inflation pressure in each chamber to provide wide range of tyre behavior which is suitable for different road surfaces and driving conditions. The multi-chamber tyre has a range of modes to accommodate urban and motorway driving for rolling resistance and grip control. A multi-chamber tyre finite element model using ABAQUS software was developed from a conventional tyre model to design and validate these tyre prototypes. These multi-chamber tyre prototypes were manufactured with the assistance of Fusion Innovations Ltd and tested in the University of Birmingham tyre test rig. Finally, a shape memory alloy valve design was investigated to control the air flow in the multi-chamber tyre.

Abstract:
Our society is changing. The role which information and communication technologies (ICT) play in our society is growing rapidly and meanwhile the world’s population is ageing. ICT has enabled social network sites (SNS), which are often targeted towards younger people and is therefore less suitable for seniors who find themselves displaced again and again. Through a design research oriented study, we explored the theories of non-traditional computing to find alternative ways of using technology to better meet the needs of seniors. We have found bridging technologies to be a promising domain that could help address the life-changing consequences of population ageing. We have identified four design principles to support the design of bridging technologies, geared towards enabling seniors to interact with social network sites. These principles constitute our final contribution.

Abstract:
In the last two decades, the deeply flawed ethical disposition of the press, or print media, and changes in the traditional business models of the print media have been carefully staged as policy challenges for both the Australian government and the eponymous public. This thesis attempts to characterise and critically untangle the technology of ‘inquiry’ that has been offered by government as a remedy to these perceived failings – a deeply intrusive, diagnostic, productive and creative technology that demands assessment when the traditionally unfettered and unregulated press becomes its field of intervention. With the print media as the key unit of analysis, ‘inquiry’ is historicised through genealogical analysis and subsequently refracted through the Foucauldian prism of governmentality to offer, quite simply, an analytics of inquiry as it relates to the print media in Australia. The first part of the paper undertakes a modest genealogical analysis of inquiry and traces a trajectory toward a governmentalisation of inquiry, before composing a general conceptual space for thinking of inquiries as ‘technologies’ by proposing a tetrad analytic encompassing the polytelic, polytechnic, polytemporal and polyspatial dimensions of inquiry. The second part of the paper patiently knits a governmental perspective with the discursive, using the tetrad as a starting point to analyse the 1992 Joint Select Committee Inquiry into the Print Media and the 2011 Independent Inquiry into Media and Media Regulation. This offers a preliminary insight into the unstable ecology of rationalities, strategies, techniques, governmental programmes, powers, resistances and co-existing technologies that animated these two inquiries into the print media. By making the self-evident nature of inquiry contingent, it becomes possible to illustrate the specific historical conditions which render inquiries into the print media intelligible.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Presented here are micromagnetic simulations to investigate alternative magnetic recording technologies including bit patterned media and domain wall storage. I have used a finite element/boundary element method to investigate the dynamics of the write process in magnetic recording systems; and a nudged elastic band method is used to calculate the thermal stability of written bits. Microwave assisted magnetization reversal of single phase media and exchange spring media is investigated. A reduction of the switching field by about a factor of two can be found in both single phase and exchange spring media when the microwave field reaches an amplitude that is 12 percent of the remanent coercivity without microwave assist. Furthermore, layer-selective writing of two-layer bitpatterned media is demonstrated by employing microwave assist technique. Selectivity is achieved by controlling the frequency of an oscillating magnetic field in the GHz range, applied in addition to the head field. Generation of the microwave field by means of a wire next to the tip of a single pole head is proposed. Optimization of writing heads is performed using micromagnetics and surrogate optimization. The shape of the pole tip is optimized for bit patterned, exchange spring recording media. I computed the write error rate and the adjacent track erasure for different maximum anisotropy in the multilayer, graded media. The results show a linear trade off between the error rate and the number of passes. Finally I have calculated magneto static fields from transverse and vortex magnetic domain walls in a planar Ni81Fe19 nanowire. These calculations indicate the required sensitivity of a nearby sensor for detecting either a domain wall of any type or being able to distinguish the domain wall character. Abstract:
This thesis deals with persuasive technologies, and in particular adaptation of the persuasion in order to optimize efficiency and relevance of those technologies. Persuasive technologies are technologies design to change behaviors without using coercion or deception. Numerous techniques to shape user behavior but few and perfectible methods to design these technologies characterized the research domain of persuasive technologies. The background of persuasive technologies is the traditional interpersonal persuasion, studied for over two thousand years in rethoric, philosophy, and more recently psychology. This last discipline offers many theories and models to understand more precisely the process that determine human behaviors. These theories show in particular that persuasive situations are complex, varied, with many influence factors. That is why we propose the notion of adaptive persuasive technologies : technologies able to adapt their persuasive stategies to the user context. To design these products and services, we propose in the first place a model of the persuasive context, that is all the constraints that influence the practice of a targeted behavior by the user at a given time. Each constraint in the persuasive context is at the same time an adaptation criteria and an action lever for the adaptive persuasive technology. For each lever, we identify the persuasive principle that can be used to move it. In a second time, we propose a problem space that characterized the adaptation of the persuasion, thanks to five axis : the purpose, the target, the criteria and the dynamic of the adaptation, and the user role in the adaptation process. Finally, by making and assessing TILT, a persuasive application dedicated to smartphone usage regulation, we show that the adaptation of the persuasion, with the use of the persuasive contexte model and the problem space, benefits to the persuasive efficiency

The need for better planarity becomes more critical in semiconductor manufacturing as dimensions and tolerance margins keep shrinking. The purpose of this thesis is to understand and model new technologies for the planarization of integrated circuits. Two technologies and models are explored: characterization and modeling of a novel polishing pad, and a dynamic wafer level physical model for electrochemical-mechanical polishing (ECMP). The novel pad contains water soluble particles that dissolve in the slurry when they reach the surface. Different pads, with varying particle concentrations and sizes, are tested by polishing test wafers to extract the necessary model parameters to model each pad's polishing performance. The effect on chip uniformity and step height planarization are studied. The simulations and analysis enable understanding and comparison of pad design decisions, to achieve the best tradeoff in the performance metrics considered. In the second planarization technology, wafer scale uniformity effects are studied in an emerging copper polishing alternative, ECMP. The proposed dynamic wafer level physical ECMP model is able to capture the physics behind the ECMP process, based on modeling of electrical current flowing through the copper thin film on the wafer surface and the ECMP electrolyte solution. The model is able to fit zonal relative removal rates with root mean square error less than 7%, compared to existing empirical models and experiments.

Non-invasive neural stimulation techniques are of increasing importance as devices move from the lab to the clinical environment. One such technology-transcranial magnetic stimulation-has already made the transition and is currently used by clinicians to treat depression. This device has several drawbacks, such as a limited ability to focus its energy to a relatively small region and to distribute energy to deep structures. This thesis simulates an inhomogeneous human brain under transcranial magnetic stimulation. The models developed indicate that regions of high conductivity and permittivity may be the key to overcoming the limitations of current TMS technology. Specifically, models of 1mm-sized particles of high conductivity and permittivity increased the induced current in deep regions by a factor of 600,000, indicating that some modification to the delivery method of TMS may drastically increase its effectiveness and usability. Unlike other forms of stimulation, acoustic energy has not been explored in great depth in relation to neural stimulation. This thesis explores the possibility of using ultrasound to focally target and non-invasively stimulate rodents in vivo. While the mechanism by which ultrasound works to alter neural activity is difficult to pinpoint, in vivo testing with a variety of ultrasound frequencies, powers, and delivery protocols may lead to a breakthrough in the field. Furthermore, this thesis outlines a method for stimulating neural activity with ultrasound by way of heating specific regions.

Abstract:
The concept of interactivity continuously enhances our day-to-day living, allowing us to experience a more convenient and enjoyable life style. Existing analogue technologies such as the internet, mobile phone and satellite have now entered their digital phase, making it possible to increase their capacity for interactivity. The technologies which provide this increased interactivity, namely the internet, mobile and television, are classed as interactive technologies. Television has been successful at marketing, having launched an interactivity interface known as iTV which initially offered superior commercial prospects. However, after a decade, the iTV industry is still quite young and has not reached its full potential. This thesis adopts a range of research methodology with which to forecast the future of interactive technologies, especially interactive TV (iTV). The uptake of new interactive technologies depends on many factors, notably the existing infrastructure in the country of adoption, cultural attitudes to new technology, the radicalism of the technology, social influences and interactions and ease of use, quality and cost. Beyond these, many other significant factors influence the acceptance of interactive technologies, the focus of this thesis is to ascertain the importance of those factors mentioned on technology adoption. This study has adopted technological and judgemental forecasting techniques to predict the future of interactive technologies, following which Cross- Cultural and Technology Acceptance studies were carried out to investigate interactive technology adoption. In the Cross-Cultural study, survey data were collected from the UK, Hong Kong and Pakistan so as to examine cultural factors pertaining to the likelihood of adoption, while Growth Curves were used to model and forecast future levels of adoption. Then technology trends in different countries were collected from the global marketing database Euromonitor. The Growth Curves, applied to a selection of interactive technologies, were evaluated and compared to identify the most useful model with which to forecast the future of interactive technologies. The findings identified the Bass Model, Simple Logistic Model and Gompertz Model as the most suitable models for the purpose, with different models identified as best for different cultures. The Judgemental study established that WWW will be the dominant service provider for financial services such as banking or financial products, while iTV will be the dominant service provider for entertainment. WWW will in fact be the dominant provider for most of the services, followed by iTV and then WAP. It is most likely that WWW, WAP and iTV will exhibit technology convergence in 20 years' time and in all probability will converge into WWW. Further to this the Cross-Cultural study confirmed that there are significant differences between cultures regarding the acceptance of interactive technologies, as it is affected by demographic and social interactions and influences. In addition, the study showed that each interactive technology has its own significant elements which influence its acceptance. Overall, the key elements identified as influencing acceptance of interactive technologies were Knowledge and Confidence, followed by the number of hours the individual spends with his or her family. The Technology Acceptance study identified a technology acceptance model for each interactive technology: WWW, WAP and iTV, which established the factors expected to influence the future growth of the technology. Managing these significant elements will assist further in promoting the growth of interactive technologies

Abstract:
Introduction: In health psychology, few studies have been conducted to understand patients' perceptions of health technologies and need to be carried out. This work aims to identify and evaluate the determinants that make up the acceptability of new technologies in health, by associating developments from social psychology and health psychology.Methodology: To investigate patient and health professional acceptability of health technologies, we conducted three studies. We chose to use a multiple methods approach (Ajzen, 1991, Fisher & Tarquinio, 2006) in order to identify the different determinants predicting the intention to use technologies. Objectives and studies: The first objective of our work was to select the most suitable models of behavioral intention, and then tailor it by adding pertinent variables. The results, using the qualitative focus group methodology, revealed that the determinants proposed in the UTAUT model (Venkatesh, 2003) supplemented with affective and interpersonal determinants, seemed the most appropriate to evaluate the process of acceptability. In a second study, we proposed adapting the UTAUT model, associating an affective dimension composed of anxiety and trust in technology, and then testing the predictive power of this model with patients and health professionals. This model showed quite satisfactory results in predicting acceptability. In patients, the technologies are initially perceived through emotional and general components (perceived anxiety and attitude) whereas among experienced and familiar health professionals, the technologies are understood through cognitive and specific components (perceived utility and control). To optimize our model we added two new variable of the doctor-patient relationship representing the level of patient’s trust in the doctor and the effectiveness of the explanation of the technology (interpersonal dimension).Discussion: The proposal of an integrative model of acceptability of health technologies based on the UTAUT model, supplemented by an affective dimension and an interpersonal dimension, appears to be a promising model to understand users' perceptions of technologies

SUMMARY During the political and economic changes of Lithuanian system the institutions of public social welfare services, which were administered by Government Administration, gained more freedom in their discretion. However, some things have not changed, such as an old attitude towards employees, worn out management position. It is very difficult for the society to transform, since it has used to old, soviet methods of working. Various researches, which were conducted by different authors, show that employees themselves determine a successful realisation of tasks and goals; therefore only using adequate Human Resources Management is possible to create such system, where both management’s (administration) and employees’ needs are met and ascertains accomplishment of the risen tasks and aims of the organisation. Currently, Social Welfare Services of Lithuania are at the point of the development and a rapid growth. There are essential performs ongoing at the Institutions of Social Welfare Service – reductions in quantity of the residents, the present living conditions are being improved, the structure of the staff is being reconstructed as well. Summary Spatial visibility detection Geographic Information System (GIS) developers come across number of various tasks ant the computers using the specialized software might ease the solution. One them is detection of direct spatial visibility. The essence of this task is to check if one spatial point can be seen from a given position. Research point’s altitude, coordinates and the information about the objects in surrounding are given. Spatial visibility may not exist if there are objects intersecting the ray from the viewpoint to researched point. Intersecting objects may be buildings, roughness of surface as well as trees and other higher object in area. Detection of direct spatial visibility is essential for transmission of high and medium frequency radio waves or optical signals. To fulfill this task the program will be developed with which assistance the zones of direct spatial visibility can be obtained. The possibility to work with several viewpoints also should be provided. The program would help to find out the heights, positions and quantity of the transmitter aerials to optimize the visible area. Initial data is the altitudes of buildings and surface in researched area. The data is given in text files created by Arc/Info system.
