Abstract:
AbstractOne of the main advantages of three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the possibility of isotropic voxels and reconstructed planar cuts through the volumetric data set in any orientation with multiplanar reformation software through real-time evaluation. For example, reformats by the radiologist during reporting allows exploitation of the full potential of isotropic 3D volumetric acquisition or through standardized retrospective reformats of thicker predefined slices of an isotropic volumetric data set by technologists. The main challenges for integrating 3D fast spin echo (FSE) and turbo spin-echo (TSE) MRI in clinical practice are a long acquisition time and some artifacts, whereas for integrating 3D gradient-recalled echo protocols, the main challenges are lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and the inability to produce intermediate, and T2-weighted contrast. The implementation of bidirectional parallel imaging acquisition and random undersampling acceleration strategies of 3D TSE pulse sequences substantially shortens the examination time with only minor SNR reductions. This article provides an overview of general technical considerations of 3D FSE and TSE sequences in musculoskeletal MRI. It also describes how these sequences achieve efficient data acquisition and reviews the main advantages and challenges for their introduction to clinical practice.

Abstract:
A major challenge facing firms competing in electronic business markets is the dynamic integration of knowledge within and beyond the firm, enabled by internet-based infrastructure and emergent fluid socio-technical networks. This paper explores how social actors dynamically employ intranets to integrate formal and informal knowledge within evolving socio-technical networks that emerge, permeate and extend beyond the organisational boundary. The paper presents two case studies that illustrate how static intranets can be useful for dynamically integrating knowledge when they are interwoven with other knowledge channels such as e-mail through which flows the informal knowledge needed to make sense of and situate formal organisational knowledge. The findings suggest that businesses should carefully examine how employees integrate intranets with other channels in their work, and the shaping of knowledge outcomes that flows from such use. There are practical implications for the proper skilling of the people who share and integrate knowledge in this way. The paper also provides a framework for dynamic knowledge integration in socio-technical networks, which can help underpin future research in this area.

Abstract:
AbstractNew sensor solutions are under development in the context of digitalization in order to integrate sensory functions into systems. When integrating sensors, the three domains of mechanical, electrical and information engineering must be considered. This results in complex development processes that require suitable procedure models. However, specific procedure models for sensor selection and integration are missing. This contribution proposes a procedure model for sensor selection and integration on the basis of the Munich Procedure Model (MPM) and gives an outlook on open research questions.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of supply chain integration (SCI) in terms of supplier integration, customer integration, and internal integration on knowledge management (KM) and technical innovation (TI). The study also investigates the effect of KM on TI. Furthermore, the mediating effect of KM on the relationship between SCI and TI is investigated. Design/methodology/approach Study model and hypotheses were developed based on literature review. The study is based on survey data collected from 217 Jordanian manufacturing companies in electrical, electronics, machinery, and mechanical appliances industries. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were applied to assess construct validity. Direct and indirect effects were tested using structural equation modeling and bootstrap re-sampling technique. Findings The results reveal that supplier integration and customer integration have positive effects on KM and TI, while internal integration has not. Also, KM has a positive effect on TI. In addition, KM mediates supplier integration-TI and customer integration-TI relationships, while does not mediate internal integration-TI relationship. Originality/value Most existing studies examined the effect of KM on SCI and supply chain management. This study argues and empirically demonstrates that SCI contributes to KM capability of manufacturing companies. Moreover, this is one of the first studies to investigate the mediating role of KM on SCI-TI relationship. The paper provides evidence that external integration is superior to internal integration in enhancing KM and TI.

Abstract:
The main goal of this paper is to compare the relative technical efficiency of agriculture in Western Balkan countries to those of the European Union and to propose ways to improve the position of Western Balkan countries. The group of Western Balkan countries includes Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania, which are candidate countries for European Union membership, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is currently a potential candidate. An input-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis model with the variable return to scale was applied to an 11-year period from 2006 to 2016. Input variables used in the model included labour, land, and capital, and the output was presented as the value of agricultural production. The highest average technical efficiency was achieved by the EU15 countries for the entire eleven-year period, while the Western Balkan countries had the lowest score. The source of this inefficiency was identified in lower levels of agricultural performance, e.g. a lower-level use of the primary production factors – labour and land.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this research is to investigate how critical managerial IT capabilities, such as IT business spanning capability, interact with two pivotal types of technical IT capabilities (i.e. IT flexibility and IT integration) to affect organizational agility. Especially, the authors mainly examine a positive synergy or complementary relationship between IT business spanning capability and IT flexibility and a negative synergy or substitution relationship between IT business spanning capability and IT integration.Design/methodology/approachThe authors develop a research model that integrates IT flexibility, IT integration, IT business spanning capability and organizational agility. Based on a matched-pair, cross-sectional field survey of IT and business managers, they use partial least squares (PLS) to analyze this research model.FindingsIT flexibility and IT integration have been empirically proven to be positively associated with organizational agility. Furthermore, the research results indicate a positive synergy or complementary relationship between IT business spanning capability and IT flexibility, whereas they indicate a negative synergy or substitution relationship between IT business spanning capability and IT integration with regard to organizational agility. This finding demonstrates that IT business spanning capability can differentially influence organizational agility depending on its interaction with specific technical IT capability types. In addition, the effects of IT flexibility on organizational agility are high, whereas the effectiveness of IT integration decreases in the presence of high IT business spanning capability. Each type of technical IT capability displays different effectiveness under high IT business spanning capability. Thus, appropriate technical IT capability types should be carefully deployed, and highly effective technical IT capability types, such as IT flexibility, should be prioritized under high levels of IT business spanning capability.Originality/valueThis research highlights the joint effects of IT business spanning capability and two pivotal types of technical IT capabilities (i.e. IT flexibility and IT integration) on organizational agility, ultimately contributing to OM theories and practices.

Taking the dynamic capability theory as the research framework, using a two-stage questionnaire survey and 318 Chinese enterprises as samples, this study investigates the impact mechanism of big data technical skills on novel business model innovation, as well as the mediator of resource integration and the moderator of environmental uncertainty. The hierarchical regression results show that: (1) big data technical skills have a significant positive impact on novel business model innovation; (2) resource integration is a partial mediator between big data technical skills and novel business model innovation; (3) environmental uncertainty regulates the relationship between big data technical skills and resource integration, that is, the higher the environmental uncertainty, the stronger the positive relationship between big data technical skills and resource integration; (4) environmental uncertainty has no significant moderating effect on the mediating role of resource integration between big data technology skills and novel business model innovation. The conclusion of this study develops the driving factors of novel business model innovation and provides theoretical guidance for enterprises to improve the innovative activities of novel business models by using big data technology skills.

This study designs a reference model of the Defense REST API server based on the representational state transfer (REST) architecture style to present the most efficient, stable, and sustainable technical criteria for real-time service integration of defense information systems in Korea. The purpose of this component is to provide evidence to be stipulated as part of the Korean Defense Ministry's instructions and regulations, such as the Defense Interoperability Management Directive and the Interoperability Guide, and to support the development of the National Defense Interworking Technology and Interoperability. As the defense information system was subdivided and developed by the army, navy, air force, or business functions, interworking between information systems has become one of the most important factors. However, despite the need for advanced service integration and interworking, various interconnection service modules based on enterprise application integration (EAI), EAI hubs, and spokes were developed at a level that met local requirements (simple data transmission) without specific criteria for each network or information system. As a result, most of the interconnection modules currently in operation suffer from the absence of a technical spectrum, such as not meeting the military's demands for real-time interconnection and service integration, which increases with time. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the above problems by integrating the defense information system into one service and presenting a reference model of the defense REST API server to meet various real-time interworking requirements, analyze the technical basis, and pursue a model that fits military reality.

Abstract:
AbstractSensors and instruments for basic oceanographic properties are becoming increasingly sophisticated, which both simplifies and complicates their use in field studies. This increased sophistication disproportionately affects smaller-scale observational efforts that are less likely to be well supported technically but which need to integrate instruments, sensors, and commonly needed peripheral devices in ways not envisioned by their manufacturers. A general-purpose hardware and software framework was developed around a widely used family of low-power microcontrollers to lessen the technical expertise and customization required to integrate sensors, instruments, and peripherals, and thus simplify such integration scenarios. Both the hardware and associated firmware development tools provide a range of features often required in such scenarios: serial data interfaces, analog inputs and outputs, logic lines and power-switching capability, nonvolatile storage of data and parameters for sampling or configuration, and serial communication interfaces to supervisory or telemetry systems. The microcontroller and additional components needed to implement this integration framework are small enough to encapsulate in standard cable splices, creating a small form factor “smart cable” that can be readily wired and programmed for a range of integration needs. An application programming library developed for this hardware provides skeleton code for functions commonly desired when integrating sensors, instruments, and peripherals. This minimizes the firmware programming expertise needed to apply this framework in many integration scenarios and thus streamlines the development of firmware for different field applications. Envisioned applications are in field programs where significant technical instrumentation expertise is unavailable or not cost effective.

Abstract:
Integrating a space system is an iterative process aimed at assembling the system according to user requirements and demonstrating through tests that the system is apt to operate in the target environment. The integration effort varies from system to system, and there is no standard methodology for its accomplishment. Researchers have proposed different approaches and metrics to estimate the effort associated with integrating a system. Sauser introduced the concept of an integration readiness level metric (IRL) for a system as a maturity assessment of the integration effort. This methodology parallels the technology readiness level (TRL) introduced by NASA in the 80s to assess the maturity of new technologies in a space system. The authors propose a methodology for the risk assessment of a system’s internal interfaces that translates and quantifies the perception of work teams about the challenges involved in the integration of a system. It consists of a structured survey of specialized opinion among project technical personnel to capture relevant technical and programmatic risks related to integrating system elements. The framework is designed to support the processes associated with choosing a system architecture. Although proposed for application in the early phases of the life cycle of a space system project, there are no restrictions on its application to different projects and life cycle stages. Applications include ranking systems components and interfaces according to readiness level and integration risks, supporting risk management in conventional risk management processes and supporting risk-informed decision-making processes to select system architectures.

Abstract:
Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP) are a collection of widely used patterns for integrating enterprise applications and business processes. These patterns represent a “de-facto” standard for design decisions when integrating enterprise applications. For the specification of integration scenarios, the patterns’ control and data flow syntax and semantics have been expressed in the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN). However, exceptions during message processing are left for further studies. In previous work, we specified common technical, exceptional situations in integration systems and derive exception types, for which we define a compliant representation in BPMN, resulting in general patterns for exception handling and compensation. In addition to the patterns, the Exception Flow was introduced, evaluated syntactically and semantically for representative integration scenarios. In this work, we complement these contributions by extending the exception strategies and patterns, and by adding an evaluation of pattern-based compilation from BPMN-based integration descriptions to an open source integration runtime system.

Abstract:
Stationary systems for monitoring devices of train traffic control are currently being implemented as external means of technical diagnostics and are located mainly centrally. The set of diagnostic parameters is scarce, and most measurements are indirect. This, ultimately, leads to low efficiency of monitoring systems, and the share of useful information from the total amount of data according to experts does not exceed 5 %. The development of monitoring technologies should follow the path of integration of measurement and control functions. The objective of the work is to draw the attention of the scientific community to the principles of monitoring and control systems implementation and the transition from their disunity to integration. Using methods of technical diagnostics and monitoring, it is proposed to switch to more advanced control systems with built-in means of troubleshooting and monitoring. The author has proposed the concept of integrated technical diagnostic tools with object controllers in the form of removable monitoring modules that transmit data along dedicated diagnostic transmission paths. Depending on the geographical location of the controller (centralized at the control station or decentralized near the controlled object), a set of diagnostic parameters is determined and a choice of diagnostic information processing methods is carried out. With decentralized location of controllers, the diagnostic modules can transmit diagnostic information from external and distributed sensors at railway infrastructure facilities. Implementation of the presented concept will allow receiving a much larger amount of initial data for operation of monitoring systems, including transition to obtaining digital twins of railway infrastructure facilities. In a broader sense, when organizing monitoring systems, it is necessary to focus not only on railway automation, but also pay attention to other infrastructure facilities serviced by personnel of adjacent sectors. Since all objects function together, such an approach to organization of monitoring will improve quality of diagnosis and prognosis, as well as provide an opportunity to assess the residual resource of technical objects.

Abstract:
Abstract Context.—Integrating anatomic pathology information— text and images—into electronic health care records is a key challenge for enhancing clinical information exchange between anatomic pathologists and clinicians. The aim of the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) international initiative is precisely to ensure interoperability of clinical information systems by using existing widespread industry standards such as Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) and Health Level Seven (HL7). Objective.—To define standard-based informatics transactions to integrate anatomic pathology information to the Healthcare Enterprise. Design.—We used the methodology of the IHE initiative. Working groups from IHE, HL7, and DICOM, with special interest in anatomic pathology, defined consensual technical solutions to provide end-users with improved access to consistent information across multiple information systems. Results.—The IHE anatomic pathology technical framework describes a first integration profile, “Anatomic Pathology Workflow,” dedicated to the diagnostic process including basic image acquisition and reporting solutions. This integration profile relies on 10 transactions based on HL7 or DICOM standards. A common specimen model was defined to consistently identify and describe specimens in both HL7 and DICOM transactions. Conclusion.—The IHE anatomic pathology working group has defined standard-based informatics transactions to support the basic diagnostic workflow in anatomic pathology laboratories. In further stages, the technical framework will be completed to manage whole-slide images and semantically rich structured reports in the diagnostic workflow and to integrate systems used for patient care and those used for research activities (such as tissue bank databases or tissue microarrayers).

Abstract:
The exponential growth in tourist numbers motivates serious analysis of this phenomenon. The econometric methods commonly used do not take this central feature of demand seriously in the form and estimating of tourism demand models. Cointegration analysis has been used in recognition of the problem as a technical estimation issue. But this is unsatisfactory, due to both technical methodological concerns with the use of cointegration analysis and because it overcomes the growth issue rather than incorporating it into the model. A model form which does incorporate growth is proposed. Other, newer methods – neural networks and structural equations modelling – are sometimes applied, but these too are not unproblematic.

Abstract:
By the benefit of functional integration the advantages of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) as construction material can be increased due to the possibilities of integrating sensors and actuators. In Regard to the layer-by-layer definition of the wall thickness, this class of material offers a high potential for the integration of additional smart elements within the stacking and forming process. In addition to the actual integration methods of sensors or actuators, the electrical signal transmission and contacting is of great importance for smart structures. Various approaches can be followed. On the one hand, the conductor path can be defined by means of a wire and, on the other hand, the definition of conductor paths can be accomplished by functionalized films (by means of printing technology). Within this paper, experimental investigations are intended to demonstrate the suitability of screen-printed conductor paths for the press-technical transformation of FRP structures. In addition to the variation of the screen printing material and the film material, for a material-homogeneous integration, an evaluation of a corresponding selection of materials takes place with respect to the stresses derived from the deformation-technical boundary conditions.

Abstract:
The EU project Pharaon aims to support older European adults by integrating digital services, tools, interoperable open platforms, and devices. One of the objectives is to validate the integrated solutions in large-scale pilots. The integration of mature solutions and existing systems is one of the preconditions for the successful realization of the different aims of the pilots. One such solution is an intelligent, privacy-aware home-care assistance system, SmartHabits. After briefly introducing the Pharaon and SmartHabits, the authors propose different Pharaon models in the Ambient/Active Assisted Living (AAL) domain, namely the Pharaon conceptual model, Pharaon reference logical architecture view, AAL ecosystem model, meta AAL ecosystem model, and Pharaon ecosystem and governance models. Building on the proposed models, the authors provide details of the holistic integration and deployment process of the SmartHabits system into the Pharaon ecosystem. Both technical and supporting integration challenges and activities are discussed. Technical activities, including syntactic and semantic integration and securing the transfer of the Pharaon sensitive data, are among the priorities. Supporting activities include achieving legal and regulatory compliance, device procurement, and use-case co-designing in COVID-19 conditions.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the integration of leadership training into IT curricula to develop current and future skills needed by the IT job market. The technical and non-technical skills required for IT professionals are presented and a conceptual model for including leadership training in technical courses is outlined. To implement this model, we adopted the Problem-Based Learning approach to teach an IT course. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered, through a survey, from 52 undergraduate students in the College of Information Technology at Zayed University. Our results show that our adopted approach was successful in teaching IT skills as well as developing leadership skills. Given these findings, we highlight the importance and feasibility of integrating leadership development on a daily basis within technical courses to develop both the technical and non technical skills required by the job market.
