Artykuł przedstawia sytuację, w jakiej znalazł się teatr polski i ludzie teatru w czasie sowieckiej okupacji Lwowa w latach 1939–1941. Władza sowiecka dążyła do dyskredytacji polskiej kultury narodowej, odcinając ją od korzeni i próbując zbudować, nową, obcą narodowej tradycji, polską kulturę radziecką. Teatr polski został tym samym właczony do poczynań propagandowych, zgodnych z celami okupującego go państwa. Reżim sowiecki zastawił na polskich artystów zręczną pułapkę. Z jednej strony wzbudzał strach, stosując represje wobec wszystkich Polaków, z drugiej — otaczał ludzi teatru względnym parawanem bezpieczeństwa, traktując liberalniej niż pozostałych mieszkańców. W artykule zostały przedstawione różne postawy ludzi teatru: od skrajnie oportunistycznych, poprzez bierne uczestnictwo w działaniach propagandowych, aż po heroiczne próby przeciwstawienia się okupantowi. Te ostatnie były charakterystyczne dla inicjatyw konspiracyjnych, organizowanych najczęściej w lwowskich kościołach katolickich. W artykule uwzględniona została zarówno działalność teatrów profesjonalnych, jak i amatorskich.

El texto parte de los resultados del proyecto Taller de Teatro Foro y Videocurrículum (Intersoc) del Aula Laboratorio de la Facultad de CC Políticas y Sociología en el marco del proyecto de innovación docente “Teatro Social y economía crítica. Jóvenes, trabajo y empleo en modelos productivos periféricos en crisis, 2020-21”. En el curso del taller, y con motivo de la creación y representación de una pieza teatral en torno al videocurrículum personal (tema de trabajo escogido por su adecuación práctica a la situación de pandemia y por su potencia analítica respecto al tema propuesto), los diferentes egresados y egresadas del grado de Sociología participantes realizarán un sorprendente e inesperado elogio de la carrera estudiada a pesar de las escasas posibilidades laborales que ofrece, y por tanto, de su escasa aportación al valor cualificacional curricular. Esta contradicción nos invita a hacer algunas reflexiones en torno al sentido de esta carrera.

Nata nel 1921, Regina Bianchi matura insieme a un teatro che da semplice dialettalità si fa, con Eduardo, giudice del mondo e rappresentante di un popolo e della sua grandezza e miseria, affrontando tutta la strada dei ruoli nelle opere rappresentate e arrivando ben presto ai personaggi di maggior rilievo. Il traguardo è il ruolo di Filumena Marturano con cui Eduardo De Filippo le impone di cimentarsi, lei recalcitrante per paura del confronto con la grande Titina De Filippo. Vita privata e professione recano in lei il segno del personaggio materno, che i registi più diversi le affidano e in cui lei si immedesima attraverso una sensibilità sempre rinnovata e al tempo stesso coerente con un modello, quella di Filumena a cui si aggiungono la protagonista di Napoli milionaria, la Zà Croce del pirandelliano Liolà, Anna la madre di Maria, Adelaide madre di Giacomo Leopardi fino a dare la sua impronta di sensibilità partenopea nella Madre dei Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore diretta da Zeffirelli. La caratteristica partenopea della sua recitazione, immedesimata nei sentimenti e al tempo stesso straniata nel modo di porsi, consente a Regina di essere anche protagonista di un teatro che supera i confini della napoletanità.

Las profesiones de sectores técnicos en espectáculos en vivo se encuentra profundamente segregado ya que la mayor parte de oficios que las componen han sido tradicionalmente ocupados por hombres. El objetivo central del presente artículo es visibilizar las principales formas de discriminación a las que se enfrentan las mujeres en este sector teniendo en cuenta sus trayectorias y condiciones laborales. El análisis atiende a la necesidad de profundizar nuestra comprensión de los mecanismos que conducen al éxito en la inserción laboral femenina en ocupaciones altamente segregadas y los retos a los que se enfrentan. La aproximación metodológica se ha basado en la realización de 11 entrevistas en profundidad a mujeres técnicas de luces y sonido, un grupo de discusión de siete mujeres técnicas empleadas un teatro público y una exploración etnográfica partiendo de mi posición como técnico de luces en varios montajes teatrales.

The three-notch black pressed teat-cup liners were selected into the set of the analysed teat-cup liners, and, for comparison purposes, teat-cup liners produced from silicone mixture. Wall thicknesses of the analysed teat-cup liners were adjusted by smoothing of the middle working part in length of 30 mm. The working part thickness thus changed from the original 2.37 to 0.41 mm for a teat-cup liner produced from black mixture and from the original thickness of 2.30 to 0.40 mm for a silicone teat-cup liner. A possibility of maximum closure of teat-cup liners in the pressing tact was assessed at the working suction of 50 kPa, the flow of distilled water through a measurement device reached the value of 4.4 l/min. Under laboratory conditions, with the above criteria fulfilled, the following stress relations were detected at teat tips: black teat-cup liner 30.25 kPa, silicone teat-cup liner 23.14 kPa. From the acquired results follows that the silicone teat-cup liner showed, from the aspect of suction loss, a more favourable value by 7.11 kPa. Physical-mechanical qualities of the analysed teat-cup liners were further used for the computer simulation of the teat-cup liners stress and strain tensor.

Nel 2014 è iniziata la collaborazione tra la rivista Altre modernità e la Società Italiana delle Letterate (SIL), che Serena Guarracino nel corso di questo decennio ha coordinato con grande sapienza e sensibilità, rilanciando numero dopo numero temi e questioni che nel corso del tempo hanno caratterizzato il dibattito di un’associazione che, dalla sua origine nel 1996, ha contributo al formarsi di una critica letteraria femminista in Italia, attraversando discipline e saperi anche assai diversi. Subentrando oggi a Serena Guarracino desidero ringraziare lei e Altre modernità perché si è trattato di un lavoro il cui impegno costante ha permesso lo sviluppo di riflessioni e contributi preziosi per il taglio critico e la novità del loro posizionamento: dai primi saggi sulla ‘personaggia’ nel 2014, oggi riconosciuta come neologismo accreditato dalla Accademia della Crusca e di fatto di pubblico dominio, guardata progressivamente nel suo costituirsi come figura critica di libertà irriducibile nella letteratura, nel cinema e nel teatro, alle riletture dei contributi critici collettivi della SIL in quelle che Serena Guarracino ha definito in modo suggestivo “recensioni dal futuro”, alla collaborazione con il Concorso Letterario Lingua Madre, molti sono i temi che sono stati affrontati in questa sezione. In questo numero si propone una rilettura del volume Comiche! Anche le donne ridono, pubblicato nel 2020 – coraggiosamente in piena pandemia, in cui poco o nulla sembrava vi fosse da ridere –, che raccoglie e rielabora il materiale del Seminario estivo residenziale della SIL che si è tenuto a Viterbo nel 2018, messo poi da Emma Scaricamazza a confronto con la scrittura di Margherita Giacobino e del suo Un’americana a Parigi, pubblicato con lo pseudonimo di Elinor Rigby, di cui si indagano i risvolti comici e parodici. Si proseguirà così sulle strade intraprese da Serena Guarracino e dalla SIL tutta, augurando a entrambe e ad Altre modernità molta propositiva critica futura e dal futuro. El texto aborda la evolución del análisis historiográfico que se ha llevado a cabo sobre la Cataluña moderna entre finales del siglo XVI y principios del XVIII. Aunque la frontera moderna de Cataluña puede ser múltiple, nos centramos esencialmente en aquella que va desde el Valle de Arán hasta el Mediterráneo. El texto abre con una primera reflexión sobre el camino hacia el cambio de modelo, luego evoca los efectos de las guerras con Francia, con algunos ejemplos concretos, como el de Cerdaña, y, por último, expone la realidad percibida y llevada a cabo con la nueva “fortificación” de la frontera catalana a finales del siglo XVII, cuando el control de Francia se hace evidente. Il tema della mia trattazione vuole definire questo fenomeno socio-culturale specificamente italiano, partendo dalle sue radici storiche: dal Giullare Medievale fino al teatro epico di Brecht e la giullarata di Dario Fo che, pur non utilizzando le tecniche stilistiche e drammaturgiche proprie del moderno teatro di narrazione ne sono considerati, in buona sostanza, i padri putativi. Successivamente, il lavoro verterà su una approfondita analisi, attraverso lo studio dei testi e di alcune interviste, di quegli autori che hanno fatto dell’affabulazione un “genere”, artefici di uno stile personale, e portatori di un linguaggio che, seppur eterogeneo ritrova una matrice comune dentro il concetto di Teatro di Narrazione e si soffermerà in modo particolare sulla figura di Giulio Cavalli con un attenta analisi del suo spettacolo Linate 8 Ottobre 2001: la strage. Ho scelto questo spettacolo perché la vicenda raccontata vede coinvolta la mia famiglia in quanto l’unico sopravvissuto di quel immane tragedia risulta essere mio padre, ma allo stesso tempo trovo davvero interessante ed unico come sia stata portata in scena una vicenda così tristemente famosa e con quali capacità l’attore ha saputo spiegare le dinamiche di tale incidente, con l’obiettivo che il ricordo di quel terribile giorno rimanga impresso nella memoria collettiva e serva come monito affinché vicende del genere non debbano più verificarsi.

Cette étude vise à mieux comprendre les mécanismes physiques à l'origine des propriétés mécaniques et des propriétés ultimes des caoutchoucs renforcés. Des échantillons de caoutchouc naturel dans lequel sont dispersés des agrégats de Silice précipitée ou de Noir de Carbone et vulcanisés au Soufre ont étés mis en oeuvre. Les principaux paramètres étudiés sont la densité de réticulation et l'interface charge-caoutchouc modifiée au moyen de différents traitements de surface de silice. L'impact des charges et du type d'interface sur les propriétés mécaniques dans le domaine des faibles déformations (effet Payne) et des grandes déformations est présenté. Le phénomène de cristallisation sous étirement dans le caoutchouc naturel est étudié par diffraction des rayons X in-situ au cours d'essais de traction quasi-statiques ou d'essais dynamiques couplés à un système d'acquisition stroboscopique. Nous montrons une corrélation des mesures du module, du degré de gonflement à l'équilibre, de l'orientation des chaînes mesurée par diffusion de rayons X et de la densité de réticulation mesurée par RMN dans le caoutchouc naturel non chargé. Dans le caoutchouc naturel renforcé, les corrélations établies à l'aide de ces mêmes mesures permettent de préciser les mécanismes de renforcement aux faibles et aux grandes déformations. Enfin, la résistance à la déchirure est évaluée en géométrie cisaillement pur sur les matériaux non-renforcés et renforcés. Les effets du type d'interface, de la densité de réticulation et de la vitesse d'essai sur la résistance à la déchirure sont présentés. Nous discutons également les profils de déformation locale obtenus par corrélation d'imageThis study aims at better understanding the physical mechanisms responsible for the mechanical and ultimate properties in reinforced rubber materials. Sulfur vulcanized samples made of a Natural Rubber matrix in which aggregates of precipitated Silica or Carbon Black are dispersed have been manufactured. The main control parameters are the crosslink density and the filler/rubber interactions through different silica surface treatments. The effect of fillers and interface type on the mechanical properties in the small strain regime (Payne effect) and large strain regime is presented. X-ray diffraction experiments have been performed to study the phenomenon of strain-induced crystallization (SIC) both during quasi-static tensile tests and dynamical tests coupled to a stroboscopic acquisition device. Mechanical measurements have proved to correlate fairly well to the crosslink density measured by NMR, to equilibrium swelling degree and to the average chain segment orientation measured by X-ray scattering in unfilled natural rubber in agreement with the rubber elasticity theory. In reinforced materials, the correlation of those different measurements of local chain stretching give new insights on the reinforcement mechanisms at small and large strain. Tear experiments have been performed on Pure Shear pre-notched unfilled and filled samples. The influence of interface type, crosslink density and test drawing speed on tear resistance are presented. Local strain profiles obtained from digital image correlation and the crystallized fraction profiles from in-situ X-ray diffraction are also discussed

ABSTRACT
Background: lo strappo muscolare degli ischiocrurali è un infortunio molto diffuso nel mondo dello sport. Il suo tasso di recidiva è molto alto e nella maggior parte dei casi costringe gli atleti a fermarsi per lunghi periodi. In base alla gravità della lesione possono comparire spasmi, rigidità, indolenzimento muscolare, gonfiore, dolore, menomazione di funzione.
In letteratura sono presenti diverse proposte di trattamento fisioterapico ma non è ancora chiaro quale di queste sia più efficace nel ridurre il rischio di recidiva e la durata del periodo riabilitativo.
Obiettivi: lo scopo di questa revisione sistematica della letteratura è valutare l’efficacia del trattamento dello strappo muscolare degli ischiocrurali nella riduzione del rischio in recidiva e, come outcome secondario, nella riduzione del tempo necessario per il ritorno allo sport.
Metodi di ricerca: le ricerche sono state effettuate sulle banche dati di PubMed, PEDro, CINAHL Complete, Cochrane Library e SPORT Discus tra giugno e agosto 2019. Sono stati inclusi solo RCT che indagavano l’efficacia di programmi riabilitativi composti da esercizi di rinforzo, esercizi di allungamento ed esercizi di controllo del bacino.
Risultati: sono stati selezionati 5 RCT. Le misure di outcome prese in esame riguardano: il numero di recidive all’interno di un anno di follow-up, la durata del periodo riabilitativo e il tempo necessario per tornare all’attività sportiva.
Conclusioni: Il reclutamento della muscolatura del tronco e del bacino combinato con esercizi di allungamento e di rinforzo potrebbe portare ad una diminuzione delle recidive e della durata del periodo riabilitativo, infatti, il reclutamento del Core durante l’esecuzione degli esercizi potrebbe favorire ad un miglioramento della funzione muscolare e un miglioramento della resistenza dei muscoli agli stress fisici più intensi.

À partir de l'idée que le texte théâtral traduit dans le contexte des prati-ques scéniques spécifiques (traduction for the stage) présente une série de problèmes de traduction qui lui sont spécifiques par rapport aux autres textes, cette recherche suggère que la question et le pro-blème autour de la traduction dans les processus avec des textes traduits sont généralement invisibles pour les acteurs et metteurs en scène. Based on the premise that the translated theatrical text, in the context of spe-cific performance practices (i.e., translation "for the stage"), presents a series of specific translation problems, this research suggests that the question for and the problem of translation, for an important number of Chilean directors and actors, is usually invisible. In fact, the translated text is usually equa-ted in almost every way with a Spanish or native text. However, the translated theatrical text, to a greater or lesser degree, determines and influences both staging choices (the director's job) and the performer's embodiment (the actor's work). As a tool for the analysis of creative processes with trans-lated texts, an empirical method is proposed. Los procesos observados son: Un enemigo del pueblo, de Henrik Ibsen, versión Bosco Cayo, dirigido por Laurène Le-maitre y Nicolás Espinoza; Los padres terribles de Jean Cocteau, dirigida por Omar Morán; y La soga de Patrick Hamilton, dirigida por Luis Ureta. A partir de la premisa que el texto teatral traducido, en el contexto de prácticas escénicas específicas (es decir, for the stage), presenta una serie de problemas de traducción que le son específicos en relación a otro tipo de textos, la presente investigación plantea como hipótesis que la pregunta y el problema de la traducción en torno al texto teatral traducido, para un buen número de directores y actores chilenos, suele ser invisible, siendo equiparado en casi todo sentido a un texto en su lengua nativa. AbstractCivil infrastructure such as bridges undergo deformations such as displacement and strain due to environmental temperature variations. Temperature causes deformations equal to or larger than that due to traffic load on bridges. This research evaluates whether the deformations due to temperature load on bridges can be minimised by incorporating photovoltaic solar panels on the bridge surface. The panels can be attached to the bridge truss, piers, and the periphery of the deck excluding the pavement, i.e., excluding bridge superstructure elements under direct traffic load to avoid wear and tear of the solar panels. The hypothesis is that solar panels will generate electricity from solar radiation and the bridge elements underneath the panels will experience less temperature load. The truss will experience smaller deformations and thereby increasing its lifespan. This hypothesis is tested with a laboratory experiment on a bridge truss. A combination of solar panels is attached to the surface of an Aluminium truss. The truss is subjected to 1-h heating and cooling cycles created using infrared lamps. The truss is monitored with linear variable differential transformers and thermocouples. Displacements and surface temperature of the truss are recorded. Results have shown a 34.0% reduction in displacement due to the installation of solar panels. The temperature of the truss has been also reduced by 15–25.6%. This research shows the benefit of integrating renewable energy means in infrastructure such as bridges to reduce temperature-induced structural deformations. Such integration can enhance the bridge lifespan along with generating green energy to electrify the bridge or the local area.

Abstract This chapter focuses on a triumphal arch erected by Italian colonial authorities on the Strada Litoranea, in Libya in 1937. This road was continually represented as a Roman achievement in publications and media from the time, and was inaugurated during Mussolini’s spectacularized tour of Libya in 1937. The arch that marked the road’s midway point, designed by the architect Florestano Di Fausto, explicitly framed itself as a concrete manifestation of the legend of the Carthaginian Philaeni brothers, narrated most fully in a digression in Sallust’s Bellum Iugurthinum. This chapter suggests that if Roman integrity started to collapse with the destruction of Carthage, justifying Scipio Aemilianus’ tears over the ruins of the Punic city, Fascist imperialism was constantly foreshadowing its own downfall, by constantly excavating the absent presence of the city of Carthage.

Nel presente articolo si tratta dell’allestimento di Così è (se vi pare) di Pirandello che ebbe un successo notevole sul palcoscenico del Teatr Powszechny a Łódź nel 1989. Questa rappresentazione fu importante non solo per la carriera del regista, Adam Hanuszkiewicz, ma anche per la ricezione della produzione pirandelliana di cui le vicende non furono fino ad allora particolarmente favorevoli. Essa propose nuove possibilità interpretative fin qui celate dell’opera dell’autore italiano. Di fatti, oltre a trasgredire le convenzioni sceniche, secondo alcuni ormai desuete, il Siciliano mise avanti una nuova drammaturgia frammentaria e apparentemente incompiuta che si concentra piuttosto sulla “vita” che sull’“azione prettamente agonistica”. Esponendo un nuovo paradigma del “dramma-della-vita” che sta in netta oposizione al “dramma-nella-vita”, ossia “dramma assoluto”, egli diede vita alla drammaturgia moderna e contemporanea. Aderendo all’ottica teatrale e drammatica di Pirandello, Hanuszkiewicz tende dunque a liberare l’autore di Enrico IV dalle tradizionali interpretazioni che si focalizzavano essenzialmente sul suo sistema chiamato “pirandellismo” oppure sul presunto “esistenzialismo”. Il regista polacco non esitò ad adottare il dramma ai tempi moderni, senza però intaccare i presupposti “ideologici” dell’opera: Hanuszkiewicz la rilesse secondo la chiave contemporanea ed anche profondamente personale, scoperchiandone il suo carattere sempre attuale nonché universale che poteva essere accolto con comprensione e ammirazione non solamente in Italia. L’articolo ripercorre quindi la fortuna dello spettacolo che, al pari dei Giganti della montagna, messo in scena da Izabella Cywińska (1974), aprì una nuova strada alla riscoperta dell’opera dello scrittore agrigentino.

Abstract The First Case Report describing what we now know to be Sjogren’s syndrome appeared in 1882, when the German physician Theodor Leber described filamentary keratitis (mucous strands that attach to and inflame the cornea). In 1888, surgeon Johann Mikulicz presented to the Society for Scientific Medicine at Konigsberg the case of a 42-year-old East Prussian farmer with painless parotid, lacrimal, and submandibular gland swelling. The term Mikulicz’s syndrome was commonly used to describe other conditions associated with parotid gland swelling, such as tuberculosis and lymphoma. Later that year, the London physician W. B. Hadden presented to the Clinical Society the case of a 65-year-old female with dry mouth and inability to tear whose condition responded to tincture of jaborandi (pilocarpine).

Abstract A parallelized approach for simulating tearing in thin material with a hydro-structural code is presented. The approach is built upon the shell finite element formulation and incorporates a simple remeshing scheme to facilitate material separation behind propagating tears. Tear propagation is handled using an implementation of the Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT) to predict fracture based on the homogenized critical strain energy release rate (Gc). The approach is demonstrated with a simulation of an impact event from a joint JAXA/NASA series of light gas gun tests. A marked improvement in model outcome with the use of the VCCT implementation is demonstrated through quantitative and qualitative comparisons between numerical debris characteristics and experimental data.

Common forms of hip disease include labral tears, synovitis, chondromalacia, or femoroacetabular impingement [1, 2]. Most patients with one of these medical conditions seek treatment to alleviate the pain. However, in addition to the pain, dynamic control of hip joint movement may also be impaired. This impairment may result from damage to proprioceptive organs or alterations in sensory capability caused by inflammation. Reduced biofeedback can lead to a loss of joint control that may result in additional injuries due to excessive tissue strain or falling due to a loss of balance. Our hypothesis is that acetabular labral tears alter normal pelvic movement and reduce subject balance control placing the patient at increased risk for additional injuries.

Through the thickness flaws or “pinholes” in proton exchange membranes (PEM) allow gas crossover that can lead to fuel cell failure. The formation of these flaws is not fully understood, but one possible mechanism is that small flaws could grow through crack propagation in the fracture mechanics sense. Although relatively brittle features are sometimes observed in failures resulting under simulated fuel cell conditions, the stress strain plots of the membranes themselves exhibit considerable ductility. In an effort to use fracture mechanics principles to characterize PEMs, fracture parameters associated with the essential work of fracture from double edge notch tensile (DENT) specimens; the tear energy obtained from the trouser tear test; and cutting energies associate with knife slitting were measured and compared. Presumably through reducing crack tip blunting, the knife slitting test is able to measure fracture energies as low as 200J/m2, two orders of magnitude smaller than measured in the other tests. The results are sensitive to rate, temperature, and moisture level. Although the implications of these properties to fuel cell durability are not yet understood, they may have applicability in the more brittle features that are sometimes observed.

Disc degeneration normally is accompanied by structural changes in the intervertebral discs and the end plates. Reduced level of water in the disc, osteophytes formation and geometrical changes in the end plates also accompany the disc degeneration process. Structural changes in the disc due to degeneration can be classified into radial, peripheral and circumferential tears. Radial tears normally extend from inner annulus region to the outer annulus in the radial direction. These may be due to the failure of annular fibers. Peripheral tears in the annulus normally occur near the junction between the annulus and end plates. These may be due to shear loads at the end plate-annulus junction. Circumferential tears can be observed in both anterior and posterior annulus. These circumferential tears may be due to separation of annular layers due to excess shear between layers and/or due to tensile strain between layers. Although the intrinsic mechanical behavior of the annulus fibrosus as a single layer has been studied, the response of the annulus in vivo does depend on its composite multilayer structure. Biomechanical analysis of the multilayered annulus will help to understand the initiation of delamination failure in the annulus. A finite element model of a lumbar disc with annulus consisting of several layers distributed along the radial direction of the disc with interface was developed to understand the delamination process of the disc under physiological loading modes. It is hypothesized that delamination starts at the inner annular layers near the end plates.

The influence of crack speed on dynamic fracture toughness of pipeline steel has been observed in some recent tests, although it is still a challenge to obtain a specific relationship between dynamic fracture toughness and crack speed due to the expensive costs of experiments. Meanwhile, the understanding of the dependence of fracture toughness on crack speed is critical for material selection and crack-arrest design in high-strength steel pipelines. The present work develops a strain rate-dependent cohesive zone model and related finite element model to analyze speed-dependent dynamic fracture of pipeline steels observed in recent drop-weight tear tests. Different than most of existing cohesive zone models, the traction-separation law of the present model considers the role of rate of separation, and a strain rate-dependent elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model is employed for the bulk material. The speed-dependences of crack-tip-opening angle (CTOA) and energy dissipation observed in experiments are reproduced in our simulations for crack speed up to 150 m/s. A remarkable feature of the present work is that the present rate-dependent model can predict speed-dependent fracture as a consequence of the strain rate effect even when all fixed material parameters are speed-independent. These results suggest that the strain rate effect in the bulk material could be largely responsible for the speed-dependent dynamic fracture of pipeline steels, and the present rate-dependent model could be used to simulate dynamic fracture of pipeline steels especially when experiments are difficult or too expensive.

Abstract The paper considers the new micromechanical models of fracture of fiber-reinforced composites. The main emphasis is made on the determination of the exact analytical solutions of appearing fracture problems, which allow derivation of the closed functional formulas for limit fracture stresses. These expressions are suited for subsequent use in the formulations of optimal design problems. The model presented here describes the deformation and tearing of cloth. The material under study is made up of two families of orthogonal fibers. The object of investigation is the distribution of stresses in the neighborhood of the end of a semi-infinite tear. The description of the stress-strain state in the neighborhood of the end of the tear reduces to the solution of a mixed boundary-value problem for an infinite system of difference equations. When cast in terms of generating functions for an infinite vector of unknowns, the problem reduces to a RIEMANN-HELBERT problem. The analytical solution to the problem shows that the character of tearing of the material depends critically on the stresses in the fibers parallel to the direction of the tear: if the fibers parallel to the tear are stretched, then a finite rip in the material has an elliptical shape and the asymptotic behavior of the stresses around the end of the tear is similar to behavior of a solid elastic body with a crack. Conversely, if there is no stretching of the fibers parallel to the tear, then the sides of the tear intersect at a right angle, and the first unbroken fiber bears a considerably larger load than when stresses in parallel fibers are absent.

This research is aimed at finding a new type of notch that would produce propagation data similar to that produced by the PC DWTT. High-toughness materials and materials that had previously been studied were used assuming that if the new notch worked on these materials it would be satisfactory for lower toughness materials. Several notch modifications were tried and most were no better than the standard pressed notch used in the API specimen. A search for a new type of notch for the standard drop-weight-tear-test (DWTT) specimen has been completed. This new notch specimen is to replace the precracked DWTT specimen which has been shown to predict full-scale behavior but has received-little support from pipe manufacturers. The new notch is a chevron notch causing fracture initiation to occur at a machined point located at mid-wall thicknessand about 0.2 inch below the specimen edge (i.e., at the same depth as the pressed-in notch of the standard DWTT). No precracking or other severe prestraining, which may create strain aging problems, is required to produce the specimen. A good correlation was obtained between the chevron-notched DWTT and the Charpy V-notch specimens for conventionally rolled steels; this correlation effectively ties the chevron notched data to past fracture research data and to published correlations thatdescribe fracture in terms of Charpy upper-shelf energy. A procedure is included for preparing and conducting the Chevron notched DWTT.

A steel weldment is a composite of zones or layers of different microstructures that possess different material properties. The zones include the base metal (or the sections of pipe), the weld metal, and a complex heat-affected zone (HAZ) of base metal that has been exposed to a variety of thermal cycles resulting in varying microstructures. The material properties of primary concern with respect to the mechanical behavior of the pipe are the stress-strain response (the constitutive properties) and the resistance to initiation and propagation of cracks or tears in the presence of a crack, notch, or other stress concentrator (the fracture toughness properties). Most of the experimental data on the behavior of welds with significant discontinuities were obtained from test specimens with surface or through-thickness notches or cracks. These data typically show an increase in load or nominal ductility for overmatched welds and a decrease in load or nominal ductility for undermatched welds. However, there are cases where the presence of a soft zone may enhance the nominal ductility and cases where overmatched welds will decrease the nominal ductility. The latter is especially likely in a girth weld with a circumferential crack in the HAZ.

Mastitis, an inflammatory response of the mammary tissue to invading pathogenic bacteria, is the largest health problem in the dairy industry and is responsible for multibillion dollar economic losses. E. coli are a leading cause of acute mastitis in dairy animals worldwide and certainly in Israel and North America. The species E. coli comprises a highly heterogeneous group of pathogens, some of which are commensal residents of the gut, infecting the mammary gland after contamination of the teat skin from the environment. As compared to other gut microflora, mammary pathogenic E. coli (MPEC) may have undergone evolutionary adaptations that improve their fitness for colonization of the unique and varied environmental niches found within the mammary gland. These niches include competing microbes already present or accompanying the new colonizer, soluble and cellular antimicrobials in milk, and the innate immune response elicited by mammary cells and recruited immune cells. However, to date, no specific virulence factors have been identified in E. coli isolates associated with mastitis. The original overall research objective of this application was to develop a genome-wide, transposon-tagged mutant collection of MPEC strain P4 and to use this technology to identify E. coli genes that are specifically involved in mammary virulence and pathogenicity. In the course of the project we decided to take an alternative genome-wide approach and to use whole genomes bioinformatics analysis. Using genome sequencing and analysis of six MPEC strains, our studies have shown that type VI secretion system (T6SS) gene clusters were present in all these strains. Furthermore, using unbiased screening of MPEC strains for reduced colonization, fitness and virulence in the murine mastitis model, we have identified in MPEC P4-NR a new pathogenicity island (PAI-1) encoding the core components of T6SS and its hallmark effectors Hcp, VgrG and Rhs. Next, we have shown that specific deletions of T6SS genes reduced colonization, fitness and virulence in lactating mouse mammary glands. Our long-term goal is to understand the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions in the mammary gland and to relate these mechanisms to disease processes and pathogenesis. We have been able to achieve our research objectives to identify E. coli genes that are specifically involved in mammary virulence and pathogenicity. The project elucidated a new basic concept in host pathogen interaction of MPEC, which for the best of our knowledge was never described or investigated before. This research will help us to shed new light on principles behind the infection strategy of MPEC. The new targets now enable prevalence and epidemiology studies of T6SS in field strains of MPEC which might unveil new geographic, management and ecological risk factors. These will contribute to development of new approaches to treat and prevent mastitis by MPEC and perhaps other mammary pathogens. The use of antibiotics in farm animals and specifically to treat mastitis is gradually precluded and thus new treatment and prevention strategies are needed. Effective mastitis vaccines are currently not available, structural components and effectors of T6SS might be new targets for the development of novel vaccines and therapeutics.
