Abstract:

Photovoltaics has so far not seen much success in Sweden. Recent studies have shown that one of the reasons could be a lack of understanding of the technology, and a feeling that the lack of energy production during winter when a house’s energy consumption is the highest makes photovoltaics uninteresting. The ongoing research project Holistic business models and ICT solutions for prosumers seeks to increase the use of photovoltaics in Sweden, and have created business model concepts in an attempt to break perceived barriers of photovoltaics. My task in this project was to design a tailor made ICT solution with the users’ needs in focus. A series of interviews were conducted with households interested in photovoltaics to investigate what information is relevant to understand the business model, and create a starting point for the design process. To ensure a high level of usability of the ICT solution, an iterative design process was conducted with user tests between iterations. This resulted in a low fidelity prototype of a smartphone application, consisting of greyscale mockups. The prototype has as much as possible taken the interviewed households’ wishes into account, while adhering to design principles set for usability design. The interviews and user tests also gave some new insights into the informants’ attitudes towards the business model suggested by the research project, which is discussed at the end of the report.
Solenergi har ännu inte lyckats få ett stort genombrott i Sverige. Nyligen utförda studier har visat att detta delvis kan bero på bristande förståelse för teknologin, men även en känsla av att det inte är till någon nytta då vi förbrukar som mest energi under vintern, när solceller knappt producerar någonting. Det pågående forskningsprojektet Holistiska affärsmodeller och IT-stöd för prosumenter har som mål att öka användningen av solenergi i Sverige, och har utvecklat koncept av affärsmodeller med mål att överkomma de upplevda barriärer som är förknippade med solenergi. Min uppgift i projektet var att designa ett skräddarsytt IT-stöd för en av dessa affärsmodeller med användaren i fokus. En intervjuserie utfördes med hushåll som är intresserade av solenergi för att ta reda på vilken information som är relevant för användaren för att förstå affärsmodellen. Detta låg sedan till grund för en iterativ designprocess med fokus på hög användbarhet där användartest genomfördes mellan varje iteration. Detta resulterade i en prototyp av en smartphone applikation som består av mockups i gråskala. Prototypen har i största möjliga mål anpassats till de intervjuade hushållens önskemål, men tonvikt lades vid att uppfylla designkriterier som säkerställer hög användbarhet. Intervjuerna och användartesterna gav även nya insikter om informanternas inställning till affärsmodellen som ligger till grund för IT-stödet, och detta diskuteras i slutet av rapporten.

Abstract:

Out in the world, there are over a million colorblind developers and a lot more that are aspiring developers. Amongst them are colorblind developers that are hindered by their color blindness. Hindered in such ways as they do not have the confidence to design an application, due to them not being able to interpret colors in a similar way as other developers. There is also a fear of “can I be colorblind and be a programmer/web designer?”. With these walls stopping potential developers from advancing or doing certain things, we could lose out on some great developers for the future. In order to tackle this, I am creating a tool for colorblind developers to generate color schemes and mock color schemes in applications. As well as giving them a tool to look up RGB/HEX-values and receive the name of the color matching.

Abstract:

The history of 'the blind' has been one of degradation and oppression. Even in these times of so-called 'enlightenment', when there is a move towards the concept of 'integration', people with this type of impairment often find themselves on the margins of society, both vocationally and relationally. The interpretations of impairment applied by professionals, and by those with impairments themselves, frequently draw from models which are essentially inadequate as a means of evaluating experience and initiating change. Conflicts arises, therefore, as attempts are made to clarify the tension between 'impairment', for emphasis upon the one fails to encompass a realistic understanding of the other. The person facing the onset of impairment, therefore, is confronted with a situation which is essentially threatening with regard to every aspect of life. Loss and change are fundamental to human experience. The commonly understood elements of 'grief work' present as a useful framework for evaluating the potential crisis of sight loss. Sight loss is described as a major life crisis, which ultimately challenges the individual's perception of himself in terms of personhood. Although many become 'integrated', a more adequate means of working towards full 'inclusion' needs to be found. The church as The Body of Christ should offer a context wherein those with impairments find acceptance and fulfilment. Nevertheless, categorisation and abusive practises have infiltrated life and worship. People with impairments often find themselves alienated by the same reductionist attitudes which characterise broader society. Such negation emerges from a misunderstanding of scripture, with regard in particular to issues of suffering and healing, and as to what in fact constitutes 'wholeness'. The work of Christ stands as evidence of his participation in, and identification with, people with impairments. Thus, he is a "disabled God" carrying the marks of stigma in his resurrected body. The Body of Christ needs to work towards a model of inclusion emergent from a renewed understanding of God's acceptance of those who are "different" as his unique creation.

Abstract:

Using a discourse analytical method with the discourse theoretical framework of Laclau and Mouffe, this thesis aims to study the changing discourse of religion and violence in the Swedish media, and how this is presented in the Swedish daily press’s reporting of the Ayodhya dispute in India during the period 1986-2002; the dispute is often cited as a typical example of the religious violence between Hindus and Muslims in India, which has plagued the country for centuries. This study would argue, in relation to the trends observed in the studied material, that the discourse of religious violence seems to become an established part of the Swedish daily press’s discourse sometime during the latter part of the 1990’s, and that the discourse itself is characterized by a tendency to portray religion and religiosity in a dichotomy with the secular, where the secular state is depicted as being in an antagonistic relationship with fanatical and violent religiosity, which is constantly threatening to tear it apart.

Abstract:

Donald Trump’s candidacy for president has led to a substantial debate not only in the Republican party but also in the media. Using a two-dimensional theoretical model consisting of the left-right scale and the GAL-TAN scale, this study aims to review the conflict that Donald Trump’s campaign has led to in the Republican party. Using content analysis, a range of statements from Republicans have been analyzed, aiming to answer the following questions; How do the republican political actors contend for or against Donald Trump’s candidacy? and: what material or post-material values are linked to these arguments and statements? This study shows that the conflict following Donald Trump’s candidacy can mainly be placed in the post-material conflict dimension, even though some left-right arguments can also be found in the studied material. The political actors supporting Trump’s candidacy are mainly using arguments possible to place in the TAN-part of the post-material conflict dimension, whereas the actors criticizing Trump are mainly using arguments possible to place in the GAL-part.

A Thesis submitted to The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine.
The Institute of Medicine’s landmark study on patient care outcomes, A Bridge to Quality, called for interprofessional education and practice that prepares healthcare students from different healthcare professions to collaborate for optimal patient safety. Additional benefits of interprofessional education include increased patient satisfaction and provider job satisfaction. Despite this knowledge, IPE interventions are not widely instituted in health professions education. In July of 2013, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education released a common standard for IPE in the US due to the realization that collaboration will play a large role in the careers of students across the health professions. More research is needed to demonstrate what components, sequencing, and frequency of interprofessional education contributes the greatest value to the competency goals established by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative. This study aims to determine if a novel curricular component, a program entitled, the “Medical Wall,” is able to demonstrate a positive impact on students’ interest and value for interprofessional education, and if the activity has a significant effect on student’s knowledge of barriers to effective team communication and collaboration, and their attitudes regarding the values and ethics of interprofessional collaboration as it relates to patient care. 196 MD, BSN and PA students were randomized into intervention and control groups. All students randomized into the intervention group were further randomized into mixed‐professions small groups who participated in the Medical Wall program, while their peers in the control group completed an alternate and unrelated activity. All participants took the validated pre‐ and post Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale survey to determine if there was significant intervention impact. The learning scale assessed four categories: Teamwork, Negative Professional Identity, Positive Professional Identity and Roles and Responsibilities. The “The Medical Wall” IPE intervention resulted in significant improvement in two out of four categories of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale compared to controls (p value set at <0.05). Виділені основні напрями вдосконалення організації ремонтно-технічного обслуговування в сучасних умовах розвитку і функціонування економіки України. Запропоновано методичний підхід до економічного обґрунтування питомих витрат на ремонтно-технічне обслуговування обладнання, який за допомогою теорії масового обслуговування дозволяє враховувати технологічні особливості виробничої системи в цілому та визначити необхідну кількість трудового ресурсу для утримання обладнання в працездатному стані. Виявлені сучасні тенденції формування організаційних структур управління ремонтними службами промислових підприємств. Запропоновані методичні засади визначення економічної ефективності розподілу функцій між рівнями управління в ремонтно-технологічних структурах машинобудівних підприємств, які дозволяють врахувати стійкість виробничого процесу і економічну ефективність системи ремонтно-технічного обслуговування обладнання. Даний підхід дає змогу обґрунтувати оптимальний рівень розподілу функцій між рівнями управління в ремонтно-технологічних структурах машинобудівних підприємств. Розроблено методичний підхід до проведення економічної оцінки систем ремонтно-технічного обслуговування на основі інтегрального критерію питомих загальних витрат на утримання обладнання у робочому стані.

Inprocess investigational теоретико-методичні and applied aspects of development of the systems of repair-technical maintenance of equipment are on machine-building enterprises. Basic directions of perfection of organization of repair-technical service are selected in the modern terms of development and functioning of economy of Ukraine. The methodical going is offered near the economic ground of specific charges on repair-technical maintenance of equipment, which by the theory of mass service allows to take into account the technological features of the production system on the whole and to define the necessary amount of labour resource for maintenance of equipment in the capable of working state. Found out the modern tendencies of forming of organizational structures of management of industrial enterprises repair services. Methodical principles of determination of economic efficiency of distributing of functions are offered between the levels of management in the repair-technological structures of machine-building enterprises which allow to take into account firmness of production process and economic efficiency of the system of repair-technical maintenance of equipment. This approach enables to ground the optimum level of distributing of functions between the levels of management in the repair-technological structures of machine-building enterprises. The methodical going is developed near the leadthrough of economic evaluation of the systems of repair-technical service on the basis of integral criterion of specific general charges on maintenance of equipment oncondition.

Abstract:

In the mid-1980s, the impact of three decades of uranium processing near rural Fernald, Ohio, 18 miles northwest of Cincinnati, became the centre of national public controversy. When a series of incidents at the uranium foundry brought to light the years of contamination to the environment and surrounding farmland communities, local citizens’ groups united and demanded a role in determining the plans for cleaning up the site. One citizens’ group, Fernald Residents for Environmental Safety and Health (FRESH), formed in 1984 following reports that nearly 300 pounds of enriched uranium oxide had been released from a dust-collector system, and three off-property wells south of the site were contaminated with uranium. For 22 years, FRESH monitored activities at Fernald and participated in the decision-making process with management and regulators. The job of FRESH ended on 19 January this year when the U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen Johnson — flanked by local, state, and national elected officials, and citizen-led environmental watchdog groups including FRESH — officially declared the Fernald Site clean of all nuclear contamination and open to public access. It marked the end of a remarkable turnaround in public confidence and trust that had attracted critical reports from around the world: the Cincinnati Enquirer; U.S. national news programs 60 Minutes, 20/20, Nightline, and 48 Hours; worldwide media outlets from the British Broadcasting Company and Canadian Broadcasting Company; Japanese newspapers; and German reporters. When personnel from Fluor arrived in 1992, the management team thought it understood the issues and concerns of each stakeholder group, and was determined to implement the decommissioning scope of work aggressively, confident that stakeholders would agree with its plans. This approach resulted in strained relationships with opinion leaders during the early months of Fluor’s contract. To forge better relationships, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) who owns the site, and Fluor embarked on three new strategies based on engaging citizens and interested stakeholder groups in the decision-making process. The first strategy was opening communication channels with site leadership, technical staff, and regulators. This strategy combined a strong public-information program with two-way communications between management and the community, soliciting and encouraging stakeholder participation early in the decision-making process. Fluor’s public-participation strategy exceeded the “check-the-box” approach common within the nuclear-weapons complex, and set a national standard that stands alone today. The second stakeholder-engagement strategy sprang from mending fences with the regulators and the community. The approach for dispositioning low-level waste was a 25-year plan to ship it off the site. Working with stakeholders, DOE and Fluor were able to convince the community to accept a plan to safely store waste permanently on site, which would save 15 years of cleanup and millions of dollars in cost. The third strategy addressed the potentially long delays in finalizing remedial action plans due to formal public comment periods and State and Federal regulatory approvals. Working closely with the U.S. and Ohio Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA) and other stakeholders, DOE and Fluor were able to secure approvals of five Records of Decision on time – a first for the DOE complex. Developing open and honest relationships with union leaders, the workforce, regulators and community groups played a major role in DOE and Fluor cleaning up and closing the site. Using lessons learned at Fernald, DOE was able to resolve challenges at other sites, including worker transition, labour disputes, and damaged relationships with regulators and the community. It took significant time early in the project to convince the workforce that their future lay in cleanup, not in holding out hope for production to resume. It took more time to repair relationships with Ohio regulators and the local community. Developing these relationships over the years required constant, open communications between site decision makers and stakeholders to identify issues and to overcome potential barriers. Fluor’s open public-participation strategy resulted in stakeholder consensus of five remedial-action plans that directed Fernald cleanup. This strategy included establishing a public-participation program that emphasized a shared-decision making process and abandoned the government’s traditional, non-participatory “Decide, Announce, Defend” approach. Fernald’s program became a model within the DOE complex for effective public participation. Fluor led the formation of the first DOE site-specific advisory board dedicated to remediation and closure. The board was successful at building consensus on critical issues affecting long-term site remediation, such as cleanup levels, waste disposal and final land use. Fluor created innovative public outreach tools, such as “Cleanopoly,” based on the Monopoly game, to help illustrate complex concepts, including risk levels, remediation techniques, and associated costs. These innovative tools helped DOE and Fluor gain stakeholder consensus on all cleanup plans. To commemorate the outstanding commitment of Fernald stakeholders to this massive environmental-restoration project, Fluor donated $20,000 to build the Weapons to Wetlands Grove overlooking the former 136-acre production area. The grove contains 24 trees, each dedicated to “[a] leader(s) behind the Fernald cleanup.” Over the years, Fluor, through the Fluor Foundation, also invested in educational and humanitarian projects, contributing nearly $2 million to communities in southwestern Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Further, to help offset the economic impact of the site’s closing to the community, DOE and Fluor promoted economic development in the region by donating excess equipment and property to local schools and townships. This paper discusses the details of the public-involvement program — from inception through maturity — and presents some lessons learned that can be applied to other similar projects.
