Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of the language situation in Gort an Choirce, County Donegal. It deals with both the sociolinguistic makeup of the area and the linguistic reality, relating to how the language is used in the contemporary social setting. An analysis has been carried out of how this situation has changed through time with specific attention being paid to social and economic changes within the area. Through this study, a corpus of spoken Irish has been collected, transcribed and edited which has then been used in the analysis of how certain linguistic features come to be used in normal discourse. Among these features are the Vocative and Genitive cases. As well as this there is an analysis of the use of the Copula and an interpretation has been given of a range of other linguistic features whose usage deviate from that of the traditional language. A detailed analysis has also been carried out in relation to the vocabulary of native Gort an Choirce Irish speakers, dealing with lexical items which are steadfast, items which can be seen to be being lost, loan words and calques from English and finally English/Irish code-switching. It can be shown, through this study, that the language of Gort an Choirce is undergoing significant changes in the areas outlined above. Some of these changes, the Vocative Case and the increase in borrowing/code switching, are more apparent and fast moving, while others, the Genitive Case and the dominance of the Substantive Verb over the Copula, are slowly taking root and the effects of which will be shown more clearly with the passing of time. It is clearly outlined that these linguistic changes and changing linguistic habits can be explained in terms of the social situation. This changing social situation has been discussed throughout as the major cause of changing language competencies, awareness and usage.

Johnson, Stephen Lee. "TeaBag: A Debugger for Curry." PDXScholar, 2004. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/2663.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes TeaBag, which is a debugger for functional logic computations. TeaBag is an accessory of a virtual machine currently under development. A distinctive feature of this machine is its operational completeness of computations, which places novel demands on a debugger. This thesis describes the features of TeaBag, in particular the handling of non-determinism, the ability to control nondeterministic steps, to remove context information, to toggle eager evaluation, and to set breakpoints on both functions and terms. This thesis also describes TeaBag's architecture and its interaction with the associated virtual machine. Finally, some debugging sessions of defective programs are presented to demonstrate TeaBag's ability to locate bugs. A distinctive feature of TeaBag is how it presents non-deterministic trace steps of an expression evaluation trace to the user. In the past expression evaluation traces were linearized via backtracking. However, the presence of backtracking makes linear traces difficult to follow. TeaBag does not present backtracking to the user. Rather TeaBag presents the trace in two parts. One part is the search space which has a tree structure and the other part is a linear sequence of steps for one path through the search space.

Shang, Yuan. "Teabag technology in long chain alkane selective oxidation." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/66336/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the searching, preparation, characterization and catalytic evaluation of active catalysts for the terminal selectivity of long chain linear alkanes. The focus of the thesis is the study of shape selective materials, including the organic material cyclodextrins, and the inorganic material, zeolite and zeolitic membranes. Prepared catalysts were performed with n-decane or n-hexane as models to produce the terminal oxidation products 1-decanol, 1-hexanol, decanoic acid and hexanoic acid. Studies with the Andrews glass reactor showed a stable terminal selectivity of 5%-9% in the autoxidation of n-hexane in short time reactions. A comparison between the Andrews glass reactor and Parr stainless steel reactor showed that the autoxidation reactions can get higher conversion but lower terminal selectivity in the stainless steel reactor than the glass reactor. Most of the metal/support catalysts showed very low conversion and very poor terminal selectivity. Increasing the temperature leads to higher conversion but results in more cracked products and less selectivity for oxygenated C10 products. The most active catalyst was 5 w.t.% Au/TiO2. However, these catalysts did not show good terminal alcohol selectivity (<3%); whereas the cracked acid selectivity was high (32.0%). Cyclodextrin covered Au/SiO2 catalysts showed limited changes in terminal selectivities (1-2%). Zeolite 4A, silicalite-1, ZSM-5, zeolite X/Y coated catalysts were successfully synthesized with alumina and silica sphere supports. The most attractive oxidation results were performed by zeolite X/Y and zeolite 4A coated silica catalysts in n-hexane liquid phase oxidation, iv especially for with short reaction time. With zeolite X/Y membrane, in a 30 min reaction, the terminal selectivity was 16%, while the terminal selectivity for the blank reactions was 0-9%. With longer reaction time, the terminal selectivity decreased to 6-7%. Zeolite 4A membrane can produce a terminal selectivity of 13% in 4 h reactions.

The bovine cisticercosis is an illness caused by the larva of Taenia saginata called Cysticercus bovis. Recently the implementation of immunologic tests has been suggested as alternative for the diagnosis of the illness, amongst these tests the Immunoblotting, that basically detect antibodies in the serum. The present work objectives the evaluation of the Immunoblotting performance in the immunodiagnosis of bovine cisticercosis as well as of Taenia saginata and Taenia crassiceps antigens. The Taenia saginata antigens (Tsag) was gotten from the calves through the experimental infection and the Taenia crassiceps (LVcra and Tcra) antigen was gotten through experimental infection in mice balb/c. The antigens had been tested in four groups of Immunoblot control-serum: 28 samples of animals experimentally infected, 32 from naturally infected animals, 28 samples without illnesses and 19 samples with other pathologies. The peptides that had only reacted with the positive serum had been selected and identified as important, observing the localization criteria (molecular weight) as well as its physical appearance, particularly the color intensity. Related to these characteristics, valid for three tested antigens, the bands of 4-6, 14 and 18KDa had been distinguished between the others, showing the highest taxes of performance and a differentiated profile, with bigger area and height, similar to a spot. The 4-6KDa peptides presented the taxes of 66.7, 66.7 and 50% of sensitivity and 97.5, 84.6 and 96.2% of specificity when used the LVcra, Tcra and Tsag antigens, respectively. The 14KDa peptide presented 87.5, 87.5 and 77.8% of sensitivity and 97.5 94.9 and 100% of specificity with the LVcra, Tcra and Tsag antigens, respectively. The 18KDa peptide presented for LVcra, Tcra and Tsag, respectively, 75, 41.7 and 88.9% sensitivity values and 97.5, 89.7 and 92.3% of specificity. Crossed reactions with other illnesses between the three antigenic preparations and the 4-6, 14 and 18KDa peptides had not been observed. The values reached in this experiment indicate that the peptides with molecular weight of 4-6, 14 and 18KDa, can be considered important in the diagnosis of bovine cisticercosis. Low sensitivity values of Immunoblot had been observed when serum of animals with natural infection, generally discrete, had been considered. On the other hand, serum samples of antibodies from the studied bovines demonstrated high taxes of performance in the recognition of the 4-6, 14 and 18 Kda peptides, what characterize the test qualitatively, becoming it useful for the diagnosis of cisticercosis, as well as teste antigens.

Anxiety is characterized by a state of tension, apprehension and discomfort that arise from internal or external danger imminent and may be a response to stress or environmental stimuli, and can measured by psychological and physiological changes of the individual. The L-theanine (gamma-L-glutamic acid ethylamide) or theanine is an amino acid found in Camellia sinensis, commonly known as "green tea". This amino acid has been used to reduce mental and physical stress, improving memory function and for treating anxiety. Because the anxiety disorders are among the most common disorders seen in both the general population and in the services of primary health care, it is relevant to the investigation of non-pharmacological methods for their treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychophysiological effects of L-theanine on a model of anxiety in healthy humans. The study was an experimental, kind of randomized controlled clinical trial. Thirtie was composed of healthy students, male or female, which were inserted into one of three groups (control, L-theanine 1 or L-theanine 2). The participants of the experimental groups received 200 mg of L-theanine by a capsule as a single dose. The human anxiety was induced by Simulated Public Speaking Test - SPST and was assessed by physiological parameters (blood pressure, heart rate, ending temperature and electrical conductance of the skin) and psychological parameters (anxiety Inventory, trait - STAI-T and state - STAI-E). Statistical tests were considering parametric data the ANOVA (one way) and ANOVA for repeated measures data and considering the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman. Results were considered significant when showed a significance level of 95% (p < 0,05). There was a reduction in the levels of systolic blood pressure and heart rate in group L-Theanine 2 (p <0,05) and the electrical conductance of the skin in group L-theanine 1. There was also a reduction in the score of the STAI-E in both experimental groups since the score remained within the range of anxiety low throughout the test (<40 points). These results suggest that L-theanine has an anxiolytic effect on the physiological and psychological parameters that change in anxiety. Thus, this amino acid may be a non-pharmacological strategy in the treatment thereof.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Due to the increasing international operations for the Swedish Armed Forces these new types of opponents needs new tools to cope with these commitments. A couple of years ago the Swedish Armed Forces had no non-lethal weapons, but today the Swedish soldier has a number of tools to choose from.

The purpose of this paper is for the reader to get a presentation of which non-lethal weapons are used today by the Swedish Armed Forces and a sample of what non-lethal weapons are out on the market today. My main question is which non-lethal weapons do the Swedish Armed Forces’ miss in their non-lethal capabilities set.

I have collected information from a wide selections of sources like reports from the Swedish Defence Research Agency, the Swedish Armed Forces’ own regulations and the Internet. The information is then processed and divided into five chapters: The development of non-lethal weapons, description of technologies, non-lethal weapons in the Swedish Armed Forces, Non-lethal weapons on the market and Results.

This paper is limited to handheld, portable and man to man non-lethal weapons, all non-lethal weapons in the Swedish Armed Forces or on the international market are not covered.

My conclusion is that the Swedish Armed Forces should acquire three 40 mm projectiles, one 12-gauge projectile and one TASER®.

Frazer, Lewis. "The impact of various chromatographic conditions on the separation of modified and unmodified oligonucleotides." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-85275.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, the effects of certain chromatographic conditions on various modified and unmodified oligonucleotides were investigated. At the forefront of this study was the investigation of a new Ion-pair Reversed-phase liquid chromatography (IP-RPLC) method, that had the potential to replace a previously established triethylammonium acetate (TEAA) IP-RPLC method developed for oligonucleotide separations. This method, utilising the counter ion dibutyl amine (DBA) and a Tris-buffer at pH 8, produced promising results indicating that the strong binding strength of DBA creates a hybrid IEX/RPLC separation method – the separation of oligonucleotides is dynamically based on both charge and length. Higher concentrations of DBA appear to produce better results that include improved efficiency, increased retention and even the potential discovery of hidden impurities. In conjugation with Ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) systems, sub-2 µm particle columns and gradient optimisations, separations of complex oligonucleotides could be achieved in short analysis times. Furthermore, effective separations at the analytical level can be applied and adapted to larger scale Prep-LC, potentially also improving the purification process of crude oligonucleotide samples. Further development and validation are, however, required for any future work with this method.

The Product Development Process (PDP) is a critical success factor of any company that proposes to compete by creating and introducing new products to achieve competitive advantage. Through the integration of product and process in the PDP and the elimination of wastes in the process, it is possible to achieve a reduction of time-to-market and a better performance of the product in terms of quality and cost. In this context, this research aims to apply the value stream mapping (VSM) to the development of food products, in order to have an improved process through the reduction of waste. The study was carried out in a large company located in the state of Paraíba that has been operating for 65 years in the food sector. For this, an action research was conducted to allow the critical analysis of the current PDP model used by the company and the further implementation of an improved model. The results indicated that the organization had a PDP very similar to the reference models of the food sector, but it presented several wastes that hinder its evolution. From the mapping of the current model, a future model was proposed in ideal conditions, which confirmed, after its application, the lead time reduction of the process and proved to be feasible, useful and user-friendly. It was still possible to observe other driving factors in the new PDP of the company, which were the change of the working environment and the improvement in the interdepartmental relationships, supported by information technology, which started to play a significant role in the process. Another relevant finding to the research field was the confirmation of the applicability of VSM in the food product development process, given the lack of studies in the literature with this approach.

The socio-technical perspective suggests both the organizational and technical aspects of Information System Development Projects (ISDPs) frequently change, the Information System Development team’s flexibility in responding to these changes has become a critical success factor for system development. Nevertheless, few studies focus on the flexibility of Information System Development teams. The purpose of this study is to explore the flexibility of ISD teams. Based on the socio-technical perspective, three primary factors are identified: (a) the change of business requirement, (b) the change of technical development, and (c) the change of the process of software development. Through the application of Delphi Research, the opinions of a panel of experts were collected as the primary data of this study. Our result indicates that the construct of ISDP team flexibility is presented as a multidimensional construct consisting of three constituents: flexibility responding the changes in (a) business requirements, (b) system development techniques, and (c) systems development processes. These sub-constructs are labeled as business requirements flexibility, system development techniques flexibility, and systems development processes flexibility.

Abstract:
The constant changing political, technological and socio-economic environment demands the capacity for an agile and rapid response on the part of organizations, sustained by a high level of quality and innovation, so as to maintain competitiveness in the market. In this aspect, projects assume an important role. The increasing complexity of projects has determined the development of several management, organization and planning tools for the efficient execution of these projects. Project management incorporates these tools in a way that facilitates the integrated development of the project. The SMEs, due to their particular nature, demand a more simplified, laissez-faire approach to project management. In the context of the TEandM organization, a SME whose projects in innovation are a strong component of its success, the topic of this dissertation has emerged: the application of project management principles to the implementation of a new system of coating deposition with a laser (laser cladding), with the aim to increase the company's production capacity by 20%. The goal of this dissertation is to demonstrate the planning and management necessary for this project, such that the project is successful, not only in terms of the intended goals, but also in terms of the established budget and deadlines.Given the complexity of the project at hand and its duration, it has been opted to use tools typically associated with large projects, such as Microsoft Project, network diagram, critical path method and critical tasks and cost management. These tools benefit the project because they allow a better monitoring and management of the project parameters, facilitating any necessary adjustments when undesirable deviations occur. The work of this dissertation has focused more on the initial (creation of the project charter), planning (tasks scheduling) and execution (proposal analysis, writing of the safety procedures, industrial licensing, FDA certification verification) phases of the project life cycle. In addition, there has been a contribution to the monitorization and control of the project which, even though this is not an integral part of the project, is imperative to its success. For this, a cost analysis has been executed. This dissertation has allowed a monitoring of the project and the perception of the complexity that is maintaining the project within the planned parameters. This project has deviated slightly from the initial planned budget. However, this deviation has had very little relevance to the organization. With regards to the time variable, although there is a dependency on a large number of suppliers, the project has evolved within the established deadlines for each activity, such that the critical activities have occurred on the expected dates. At present, the project is in its execution phase, which should be concluded by October 31, 2018. This project will benefit the organization in their goal to become internationally recognized for its capacity to develop, for the market, innovative solutions for component coating.

Based on the researcher’s reflection on the localization education, the current study is an action research on a Performing Arts curriculum design under the concept of school-localization, adopting the tea culture as the learning principle. This study aims to investigate the origin and background of Ling Yun Junior High School’s school-localization curriculum and the application of a school-localization curriculum in designing learning activities in the Performing Arts classes. The purpose is to ensure whether the school-localization programs are practically implemented in the Performing Arts. The results of this study are listed as follows: First, as for the aspect of curriculum development and design, the development of school-localization curriculum at Ling Yun Junior High School was based on the teamwork of a curriculum development group and the incorporation of teaching resources. The implementation of a Performing Arts curriculum under the concept of school-localization achieved three pedagogical goals, including cognition, skills, and affection. The rationale of the curriculum design depended on three aspects: cultural understanding, action learning, and audience’s perceptions. Gender-differentiated tea-picking dance movements could help students experience the meanings of gender movements in the Hakka culture. In addition, the incorporation of both traditional and creative dance learning activities helped students get closer to traditional culture. As for the aspect of students’ learning, second, the course could develop students’ hometown identity, in which students could appreciate and have a strong desire to learn more about their hometown cultures. Through group discussion and performance, students could realize the importance of self and teamwork, and be aware of Hakka spirits. Finally, as for curriculum implementation and teaching profession, a mixed-gender grouping approach was adopted to help learners experience features of the Hakka artistic culture. The application of multimedia in teaching also enhanced the teacher’s professional development and improved students’ learning.

Abstract:
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are pentameric, ligand-gated, cation channels found throughout the central and peripheral nervous system, whose endogenous ligand is acetylcholine, but which can also be acted upon by nicotine. The subunit compositions of nAChR determine their physiological and pharmacological properties, with different subunits expressed in different combinations or areas throughout the brain. The behavioral and physiological effects of nicotine are elicited by its agonistic and desensitizing actions selectively on neuronal nAChRs. The midbrain is of particular interest due to its population of nAChRs expressed on dopaminergic neurons, which are important for reward and reinforcement, and possibly contribute to nicotine dependence. The α6-subunit is found on dopaminergic neurons but very few other regions of the brain, making it an interesting drug target. We assayed a novel nicotinic agonist, called TI-299423 or TC299, for its possible selectivity for α6-containing nAChRs. Our goal was to isolate the role of α6-containing nAChRs in nicotine reward and reinforcement, and provide insight into the search for more effective smoking cessation compounds. This was done using a variety of in vitro and behavioral assays, aimed dually at understanding TI-299423’s exact mechanism of action and its downstream effects. Additionally, we looked at the effects of another compound, menthol, on nicotine reward. Understanding how reward is generated in the cholinergic system and how that is modulated by other compounds contributes to a better understand of our complex neural circuitry and provides insight for the future development of therapeutics.

The purposes of the research are to examine the reasons for and the process of the merging of two environmental NGOs in Taiwan. While researches focusing on public and private sector organizational change have been abundant, few previous literatures concerning organizational change dealt with the way in which the merging of NGO is in progress, the strategies utilized to overcome the resistance it might ensue. Analysis of this thesis is made possible with the help of 9 former and incumbent members in terms of a series of semi-structured in-depth interviews with both Taiwan Environmental Action Network (TEAN) and Mercy on the Earth, Taiwan (MET) in Taiwan. What has been achieved can be summarized as following: 1. The continuity of concerned issues can be crucial for facilitating the process of Non-profit organization merging. 2. The commitment and engagement for causes of NGO and prospect for better development revealed by the members have been conducive to being no obvious resistance from both organizational and individual levels. 3. The nature of NGOs, either in the form of foundations or association, makes differences, since the former giving emphasis on “person” and the latter on “property.” It is the “property threshold” issue that complicated problems of the merging of two foundation based NGOs.

ABSTRACT Teachers influence students a lot. Their teaching behaviors and the beliefs hidden behind are issues worth exploring. The researcher was especially interested in those of the senior high math teachers in cram schools. By investigating the issues in a more rationalistic setting, the researcher tries to explore ways to promote the teaching effectiveness. The purposes for this research are the following. (1) the teacher’s beliefs of the senior high school’s math teachers in cram schools. (2) the teaching behaviors of senior high school’s math teachers in cram schools. (3) the relationship between cram school teachers’ beliefs and their teaching behaviors. (4) any mediating variables between teachers’ beliefs and teaching behaviors in cram school of senior high math teachers . The study employed a qualitative research method. Eight informants were interviewed, classrooms were observed and record and document related to classroom activities were collected. Besides, trustworthiness techniques such as triangulation, member checking, peer debriefing, thick description and reflexive journals were used to strengthen the study’s rigidity. Based on constant comparative data analysis on teachers’ beliefs, the research found the following. (1) Cram schools are a market-oriented teaching environment. (2) Cram school teachers emphasized the importance of mathematical concepts. (3) It was a plus to compile their own teaching materials or handouts. (4) The teachers tried to help students solve the problems based on their past experience while they were students. (5) Variable instructional strategies such as summarizing, synthesis etc. were adopted to enhance students’ test-taking effectiveness . (6) Cram school students are more active learning individuals. (7) It is important to collect different and variable kinds of test problems. (8) Incentives likes scholarship and recognition was used to motivate students. (9) The most essential element for learning is to have a good class order and students’ participation. (10) Practices and quizzes are important for math learning. On the other hand, their teaching behaviors are as follows. (1) They collected in great numbers all kinds of supplementary materials, re-organized them as handouts in a way different from that of common reference books, and added some special sections such as synthetic problems patterns, and error analysis. (2) They knew very well the syllabi and teaching materials of all schools and collected past exam test items from the Joint College Entrance Exam and high schools to reinforce the importance of some patterns. (3) They are well-prepared for the teaching materials and emphasized efficiency. (4) A lot of direct explicit language and non-verbal language were used to attract students’ attention and achieve learning objectives. (5) “Error demonstration” was employed as a teaching strategy while repetitive memory and induction as learning strategies. (6) Class order was properly maintained. (7) Teaching behaviors almost wholly concentrated on the topics and contents . (8) Classes were teacher-centered without students’ feedback and after-class exercises or tests. Teachers’ beliefs and teaching behaviors were inter-related and they were both influenced by teachers’ background and other contextual variables.
