Full textIn a context where teams play an increasingly important role, it is of major importance to understand conflict and to develop diagnostic tools to avert it. Here, we investigate empirically whether it is possible to quantitatively predict future conflict in small teams using models of social network structure. We analyze data of 16 small teams. We find that models based on complex networks successfully anticipate conflict whereas traditionally used models do not. We also present a study about gender differences on leadership. This study aims to understand the mechanisms behind the leadership evaluation process. We analyze data of 45 leader evaluations (33% women). We find that female leaders are better evaluated than male leaders at the beginning. Later, this advantage vanishes together with the surprising effect of having a female leader. We also find that the network clustering of female leaders grows significantly more than the clustering of male leaders.

Full textThe Hippo pathway, firstly described in Drosophila and highly conserved in mammals, has been demonstrated to play a crucial role in the organ size control. This kinase cascade regulates the phosphorylation of the downstream effector YAP (or its paralogue TAZ), a transcriptional coactivator with oncogenic activity. Its function is mediated by its nuclear translocation and interaction with the transcriptional factor TEAD, to form YAP-TEAD complex which activates the genes expression in charge of cell proliferation triggering organ growth. Overexpression of YAP/TAZ/TEAD protein in several cancers disrupts the Hippo pathway balance and urges on YAP-TEAD complex formation causing excessive proliferation and cancer development. Inhibiting this protein-protein interaction is thus a promising therapeutic target for the design of new anti-cancer drugs. In this goal, the laboratory has considered two strategies. The first one consists in targeting the YAP protein by synthesizing dipyrrins, representing Verteporfin fragments to define the minimal requirement yielding the expected biological activity. A second approach involves synthesizing TEAD ligands able to fit in specific interface 3. Based on molecular modeling, a triazole scaffold family was optimized to establish structure-activity relationship. Thanks to the biological and binding tests development, synthesized molecules evaluation is still in progress and the present first results have already allowed identifying a promising compound

The automatic transmission is a very complex system in a modern automobile with several hundred components performing mechanical, hydraulic and electronic functions. System integration and attribute management are key challenges in the design and development of an automatic transmission. The system and sub system team structure can play a key part in the success of this development. A properly structured team can enhance the communication between the engineers designing the individual components, ensure that all interfaces between the components are properly managed and appropriate design actions are in place for best in class attributes. This thesis analyzes the current team structure and composition that is in place in the Automatic Transmission Division at Ford Motor Company and offers recommendations to improve the composition to better align the sub system teams with the actual workings of the transmission. The main tool that is used to enable this work is the Design Structure Matrix (DSM). Communication between individual team members is compared to components that physically touch or exchange energy through hydraulic means, or exchange electrical signals and preferred team compositions for effectively engineering these sub systems are proposed. The efficacy of these teams to manage attributes like noise and shift quality is also discussed.

Full textThis thesis explores Ted Hughes’s poetic work and focuses on the question of the completion of being and of language. The poet sheds light on the man of ‘logos’, heir to Socrates and Descartes, criminal because he wanted, by the sole force of his rational mind, to own and control the outer world of nature and to be the master of the inner world of his individuality, body and soul alike. The myths and stories that fill Ted Hughes’s poetic and critical work trace the trajectory of a human being who has acknowledged the harm he has done and asks for forgiveness to the Goddess of Complete Being, both his Mother-Earth and Sacred Bride, both Queen of Hell and Flower of Paradise. As he surrenders to her unconditionally, an ultimate and ‘last-ditch miracle’ occurs, one that reveals his true and divine ‘self at the source’, his ‘vital nucleus’ and ‘the most inaccessible thing of all’. According to the poet, one should speak like the animals and the birds that, far beyond human words, manage to ‘express this being pure and without effort’ and a truth ‘at the core of us – strange, beautiful, pathetic, terrible’. One should decipher the inaudible music of the wind, the grass and the rocks, because it bears the truth of a nameless Goddess, the ‘Annunciation of clay, water and sunlight’, or the ‘crocus evangels’, which tell man that he should take all the risks throughout his journey. The human being that the poet describes has a black wound on his body and a rainbow jewel in his soul; he has been through the softness of agony and the sorrows of ecstasy – and thus he feels the inmost core of being and of language, and the secret of the magic spell cast by poetry

Full textImprovisational Leadership: A Descriptive Case Study of the Complex Problem-Solving Experiences of a High-Functioning Federal Government Interdisciplinary Team This study described the symbiotic relationship between shared leadership, organizational improvisation, and symbolic interactionism in generating improvisational leadership vis a vis the complex problem-solving experiences of a high-functioning federal government interdisciplinary team of six veterinarians. The study had a dual goal orientation: (a) to describe members' experiences of complex problem-solving; and (b) to describe how members shared leadership during these experiences. The grand tour question for this study was: What is the nature of improvisational leadership via the complex problem-solving experiences of a high-functioning federal government interdisciplinary team?
The purpose of this study was to describe the nature of improvisational leadership in the complex problem-solving experiences of a high-functioning federal government interdisciplinary team. This study observed that by virtue of their interdisciplinary-interdependent expertise, members were perpetually engaged in interactive knowledge exchange. The research revealed that the medium for these exchanges was polylogue or concurrent, multidirectional, ongoing conversations among the members. The study determined that through this level of discourse and interactivity in real-time, the foci remained on the situation specific needs and in turn placed the needed expertise in the leadership position/role.
The study was designed to broaden understanding concerning the nature of improvisational leadership via the complex problem-solving experiences of a high-functioning federal government interdisciplinary team through describing leadership as an emergent consequence of the needs of the moment, the actions and interactions among members, and the available material, cognitive, affective, and social resources brought to bear in process.

Full textTearing of the muscle-tendon complex is a common sport-related injury for athletes. Many studies reported description of this traumatism but mechanisms leading to such an injury are still unclear as are the site of mechanical failure and involved structures. The aim of the thesis is to describe the phenomenon of the muscle-tendon-complex’s tear using the discrete element method and validating the numerical model with experimental data. In the first part, a literature review explains the different properties of the muscle-tendon complex main components’ in order to model it at the macroscopic scale. In the second part, the muscle-tendon complex is modeled. Validation of the mechanical behavior in passive tensile test is proposed by comparison with experimental data from L.-L. Gras on human sternocleidomastodeus muscle. Then, the different influences of morphometric parameters on the mechanical behavior of the complex are investigated. The third part focuses on the rupture. A model of the complex set of {Achilles tendon/surae triceps} is built and a tensile test until rupture is applied. Model validity is assessed by comparison with in vitro experiments from human cadavers. The fourth part focuses on the muscular activation, implemented inside fibers’ behavior. Validity of its active behavior is investigated. This fifth and last presents the enrichment with destructive tensile test. This added test allows first to study the feasibility to model the tear with the discrete element method; and second to focus on damaged structures and rupture’s mechanisms. This offers possibilities for clinical applications of this model to understand and prevent injuries caused by a tear of the muscle-tendon complex

Full textIntroduction: The vertical jump ability is essential for performance in many sports. The use of complex training has in previous research been shown to provide significantly improved power development. Post-Activation Potentiation (PAP) is a physical phenomenon that increases muscle tension and the force development of the working muscles which can be implemented in complex training. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether athletes in basketball, football, handball and volleyball will have a favorable increase in Countermovement jump with arm swing (CMJa) if they perform heavier squats with a load of 50% and 80% of their estimated or measured 1 repeat maximum (RM) before CMJa. Method: 9 men and 2 women, age 20.6±3.3 years, height 181.4±7.4 cm, 76.9±12.6 kg body mass participated in the study. All participants were active in one of the sports basket, football, handball or volleyball. The participants performed two set of squats followed by five set of two repetition CMJas with a five minutes rest in between. An infrared sensor MuscleLab was used to analyze the jump height. Results: The result showed no significant difference between heavy squats and jump height in CMJa over time (p=0.98). Conclusion: Squats with 50% and 80% of 1RM do not seem to improve jump height performance in CMJ on team sports players. The result in this study does not support the results in previous studies showing a positive effect of heavy squats on maximal jump height.

Through this study, we intend to identify possible changes in the Brazilian national soccer team’s identity and also to find which elements have contributed to this transformation. We are seeking for new perspectives from both the fans and the media regarding the Brazilian team. In order to achieve that, we will make use of two classical concepts proposed by Nelson Rodrigues. The first one is known as “'the nation in soccer shoes'”, a feeling which all Brazilians fans feel when the national team wins, and the second, “the mongrel complex”, a sense of inferiority felt when de national soccer team loses. Both of the concepts will be used as categories for our research. Can the sports marketing be blamed for this “new” identity? Did the globalization process; the significant number of Brazilian soccer stars playing overseas; the posture of the main sponsor (Nike) over the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF)’s decisions, instigate some type of detachment from the media and fans? In order to answer these questions, a survey was applied to the fans, before the Confederation Cup held in Brazil in 2013, and, in addition to that, the columns of three sportswriters were analyzed over six months to evaluate if the nation is still in “soccer shoes” or if it means that our “mongrel complex” still prevails?

Full textOur research work is included in Sport psychology and Cognition. Decision-making, in a dynamic and complex context, involves parameters such as perception, memory, knowledge or experience. Elite athletes are better than novices in their ability to perceive relevant cues and act on them to adapt to the environment. Three of our studies have shown that this expert superiority is reflected, for adults, in the ability to react to a signal, especially when the task was specific. However, the fourth study revealed that these differences did not exist for adolescents. The last two studies sought to assess the influence of intense exercise in adults, and of a serie of training in adolescents, always on the ability to react to a specific situation. We showed on the one hand that post-exercise performance had been improved in adults, and on the other hand that this performance had not changed in adolescents after two days and half of training. We discussed the importance of studying decision making in a specific context in an attempt to understand the connection between performance on cognitive tests and performance on the field

The present paper is based on the thought that there can be no simplified way of understanding and analyzing the facts surrounding human existence and, therefore, a linear approach to exercising multiprofessional care in the process of death and dying. Thus, investing in studies on the phenomenon of death and dying from the perspective of complexity thinking will contribute to the establishment of a "new professional order", motivated by an extended and systemic understanding of care throughout the existential cycle. The purpose of this study was to validate the theoretical-practical construct on the multiprofessional care of neonates in the process of death and dying in neonatal intensive care units, following a complexity thinking. And, as specific objectives: To analyze the scientific productions on multiprofessional care in the process of death and dying in neonatal intensive care units; To know the perception of the multiprofessional team of neonatal intensive care units on the process of death and dying of neonates, and To describe the stages of construction on the process of death and dying in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units . In order to meet the first objective, an integrative research was carried out in PubMed, Lilacs and Bdenf Databases, which resulted in the inclusion of 13 productions, which were decoded into three categories of analysis: the perception of the multiprofessional team about the process of death and dying, strategies of care in the face of neonatal death and family reaction to the process of death and dying. To meet the second objective, a qualitative exploratory-descriptive study was carried out through a focus group technique with 35 professionals from the multiprofessional team who work in a neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit from May to July. A third specific objective was reached through a methodological research, which sought to describe the construction and validation stages of a construct on the process of death and dying in neonatal intensive care units, following a complexity thinking. In response to the latter objective, on the analysis of renowned specialists, a return of twelve instruments were evaluated in the first round and eleven instruments in the second Delphi round. In the first round, suggestions were made for changes in relation to the conceptual and formative dimensions of the construct. The construct was considered valid, both in content and appearance and will contribute to the expanded and multiprofessional understanding of the process of death and dying of neonates and children locally and nationally. It is concluded, therefore, that the process of death and dying of neonates and children constitutes a singular and complex process, both for the multiprofessional team and for the family members. In this direction, the validation of a theoretical-practical construct on the process of death and dying, in the perspective of complex thinking, constitutes a proactive strategy for the (re) thinking of human existence itself, in addition to enabling theoretical-practical reflections among professionals of the multiprofessional team that contributes to the confrontation of the adversities and the uncertainties inherent to existential and caring dynamics. Complex thinking corroborates, in this direction, with the bet that it is not possible to escape the uncertainties and adversities of life, but that it is necessary to assume death and dying as a phenomenon that is part of the existential dynamics.

Full textIt is a descriptive qualitative research, accomplished in a Brazilian branch of a French multinational company, that it aims at to analyze how the semi-autonomous groups methodology works in a management point of view. As the increasing empowerment by the use of these semi-autonomous groups is a recognized practice of improving competitiveness in the companies, it was necessary to identify which aspects related to the implantation methodology, chosen by the multinational, presented positive aspects and deficiencies in the employees optics. The used methodology is a case study, where in the data collection was used a questionnaire and daily observations of the company. The chosen universe is the operational department of the multinational, due to its largest implication in the implementation of the semi-autonomous groups. The chosen sample refers to a specific section of the assembly department, because it was considered representative in the analysis universe. The associate theory, from which the questionnaire was elaborated, found the necessary abilities/knowledge to the implementation of semi-autonomous groups, as well as the three competence dimensions idealized for Le Boterf, generating thirty six questions, being two for each relationship abilities/knowledge - competence dimensions between abilities/knowledge and competence dimensions. The conclusion of the questionnaires results analyses basing on the lifted up theories, the implantation manual of the multinational and the section observations, identified five roads of progress so that it is possible to develop the necessary competences to the semi-autonomous groups of this multinational. Which are: leadership formation and sensitization, development of the evaluation system, complete implantation of the spokes, formation / training in the other necessary competences to GSA and implantation of monthly team meetings.

Full textCompetition and technological change have never been as intense as they are today. To survive, companies must increasingly carry out current activities at the same time that they explore future ones. It is no easy task to operate on both of these fronts, and doing so is a potential source of tension and contradiction. Although management research has provided insight into the exploration and exploitation tension, there are still contradictions and unexplored areas. In particular, there is no consensus on the definition of the concepts of exploration and exploitation, which means the research lacks a certain level of consistency. In addition, there has been very little attention paid to the Exploration/Exploitation tension in the context of young, growing “scale-up” companies, which are particularly exposed to threats to their survival. To obtain a better understanding of the situations this tension causes in these companies, we have adopted a multi-paper dissertation consisting of three complementary studies. In the first study, to create a conceptual framework for the thesis, we answer researchers’ call for a clarification of the concepts of exploration and exploitation by proposing a typology of exploration. Then, based on a longitudinal, multi-case approach focused on eight scale-up companies, we first explore, in a second study, the factors influencing firms’ strategic orientations vis-à-vis exploration and exploitation activities. Finally, in the third study, we seek to understand how management teams define their individual roles with respect to exploration and exploitation activities

Full textThis thesis is part of a research project conducted by the French Institut de Recherche Biomédicale des Armées (Armed Forces Biomedical Research Institute). The project aims to respond to a request made by the Admiral Commander of the Oceanic and Strategic Forces following several incidents in which a failure to transmit information within the SSN’s Diving Safety team was identified as a causal factor.Domain. The Diving Safety team, which is located in the Operation and Navigation Department, is responsible for the driving and maintenance of the submarine’s technical safety. This team works closely with other teams, mainly through verbal communication (face-to-face and remote). An initial analysis of their activities identified the team leader as a key element in the transmission of information between the command post and the members of the Diving Safety team, as this person has direct control of the process. The latter requires developing situation awareness (SA) that meets the objectives set by the command post and the constraints faced by his teammates. The research program described in this thesis focuses on the role of the team leader on mechanisms for developing collective SA when managing a dynamic and risky situation.Method. Our observations were made with 15 teams of 6 submariners, during simulation exercises that are part of their assessed training that is held prior to mission departure. These situations are highly time-constrained and are punctuated by several problem-solving phases. The method that we implemented to study the development of collective SA is based on the characterization of verbal interactions.Problem statement. We argue that collective SA emerges from the information shared within the team. Since the team leader is central in this network, the characterization of the information he exchanges with his teammates makes it possible to report on the dynamics of the development of the collective SA.Empirical studies. The first part of the thesis consists in the analysis of activity during an interesting episode from the point of view of developing SA, with alternating driving and problem-solving phases. This study allowed us to identify the dynamics of the tasks performed, and to establish two performance criteria, one for driving and one for problem solving. The second part aims to characterize communication flows based on a method derived from the social networks analysis. The objective is to study the impact of operators’ experience on the structure of verbal communication, on the one hand, and the links between the network structure and performance (driving and problem solving), on the other. The third part aims to identify in verbal communication the cognitive processes and objects involved in developing collective SA. The objective is to analyse the impact of operators’ experience on the content of verbal communication, on the one hand, and the links between the content of verbal communication and performance on the other. The originality of this thesis lies, in part, in this articulation of methods for analysing the structure and content of verbal communication, in close connection with the activity, in order to understand how collective SA develops in a dynamic and risky situation

Full textTeam adaptation is paramount for effective teamwork in complex work environments. Literature suggests that team member characteristics, episodic team processes, and emergent states contribute to collective ability to behave adaptively. However, we know very little about the causes and conditions under which these constructs relate to predict adaptation and effectiveness in complex work environments requires further clarification. In this dissertation, we focus on the multilevel, cross-level and longitudinal examination of the dynamics of team member characteristics, episodic team processes, and emergent states driving team adaptation in the work place. In this dissertation data collection was done in simulated and field settings. Participants were university students and professional workers from diverse organizational settings (e.g. business; healthcare; police). Hypotheses testing were done through regression and structural equations modelling. Regression was used to estimate direct, indirect, and conditioned effects. Structural equations modelling were used to estimate indirect, multilevel and longitudinal effects. Overall, the results suggest that team adaptation contributes to team effectiveness in complex work environments. Our results also contribute to clarify the entanglement between team member characteristics, processes and emergent states in teams. This dissertation contributes to theory and practice as it extends previous knowledge on the dynamics of team adaptation, and it makes recommendations of why and how HRM practices should incorporate our findings in people management.

The pain of ulnar side of wrist is a challenging issue in orthopedics. This is often caused by the damage of triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). The function of TFCC is to maintain the stability of the wrist joint when rotation and distribute the mechanical stress from the hand. It is still controversial in the surgical approach of TFCC repair. Due to the development of minimal invasive surgery, arthroscopic transosseus suture repair was recommended. However, some surgeons still believed that open repair had better prognosis. Hence, the objective of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical stability of arthroscopic and open approaches for triangular fibrocartilage complex foveal repair Six matched pairs of fresh-frozen forearm cadaver specimens were prepared for testing. Open repair with suture anchor and arthroscopic transosseous suture with a new aiming device were evaluated. Before and after disruption of the TFCC fovea and after its repair, dorsal and palmar translation of the ulna was measured in both groups in response to a load (3 kg) applied in the palmar and then in the dorsal direction. The total translation of the ulna was calculated as the sum of the mean dorsal and palmar translations. The athroscopic transosseous suture technique demonstrated superior repair efficacy to the open repair technique in terms of biomechanical strength. This cadaveric study also demonstrated the feasibility of a new aiming device
