Corbett, Douglas M. "Effects on 8th Grade Advanced Placement English Class High-Stakes Test Achievement Using Extended Time Blocks." ScholarWorks, 2011. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/920.

Full text
Abstract:
Student performance on high-stakes tests continues to be an important issue for school administrators. This quasi-experimental, quantitative study investigated the relationship between the amount of time 8th grade students spent in advanced placement English classes using an extended block schedule and their achievement on language arts sections of the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK) high-stakes tests. The study was based on Carroll's theory relating instructional time and student learning. The guiding research questions investigated if extended time blocks in advanced placement English would improve student achievement scores on the language arts sections of NJASK tests. The study compared NJASK mean scores between two groups of English middle school students. One group received 90 minutes of English instruction time using an extended block schedule and the other group remained in a traditional 45-minute English period. A nonequivalent, pretest--posttest design was used to investigate the research questions. NJASK scores were collected from a public middle school from 2007-2008 through 2009-2010. Frequency distributions, descriptive statistics and ANOVA tests were used to analyze the data. Results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the extended block and traditional groups' NJASK results from 7th to 8th grade. Further studies should explore the effects of extended blocks on high-stakes test achievement for 8th grade students in English classes that are not considered advanced placement levels. The findings of this study have positive social change implications on the way school administrators can use traditional or block schedule types to maximize student achievement on future high-stakes tests.

Baker, Angela H. Ms. "An Exploratory Critical Study of Questioning Strategies Posed by Early Childhood Teachers During Literacy Blocks." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2014. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2403.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive types and functions of questions orally posed by early childhood teachers in kindergarten through 3rd grade during a 90-minute literacy block. The cognitive types of questions were determined by the criteria established using Hess’ Cognitive Rigor Matrix (Hess, Jones, Carlock, & Walkup, 2009). The functions of the posed questions were determined by criteria based on the work of Costa (2001), Hughes (as cited in Fusco, 2012), and Lowery (as cited in Fusco, 2012). This study examined questioning strategies used by 12 early childhood teachers from a Northeast Tennessee School District. The 12 teachers orally posed questions were recorded, scripted, and coded by the researcher to determine each question’s type, frequency, and function and how these indicators serve to increase student engagement during the literacy block. Results from the study show that the majority of questions posed are low in cognitive level requiring students to perform primarily at the basic level of remembering and understanding. The primary function of the recorded posed questions called for students to verify their understanding and many closed questions were asked during the documented lessons. The time teachers gave students to answer a question was minimal and a single student generated response was the predominant vehicle used to glean an answer to a presented question. While the teachers in this study appeared to understand the importance of posing high level cognitive questions in order to increase Common Core Standards instruction, results from this study showed that there seems to be a disconnect between what teachers think they do and their actual practice in regard to posing effective questions as a strategy for active student engagement and learning.

Abstract:
The purpose with this paper has been to examine how the education about the particle model in grades 4–6 is conducted and how the education is carried out. The study was carried out with the help of qualitatively directed interviews with five teachers that teach in the science subjects in the grades in question. The results show that all five teachers teach about, phase transitions and the building blocks of matter, but choose to immerse in different parts of these subjects. The teachers choose different teaching methods to teach about the particle model: Traditional teaching, hypotheses, computer animations, laboratory, dramatization and use of concrete materials.

Price, Peter Stanley. "The Development of Year 3 Students' Place-Value Understanding: Representations and Concepts." Queensland University of Technology, 2001. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15783/.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding base-ten numbers is one of the most important mathematics topics taught in the primary school, and yet also one of the most difficult to teach and to learn. Research shows that many children have inaccurate or faulty number conceptions, and use rote-learned procedures with little regard for quantities represented by mathematical symbols. Base-ten blocks are widely used to teach place-value concepts, but children often do not perceive the links between numbers, symbols, and models. Software has also been suggested as a means of improving children's development of these links but there is little research on its efficacy. Sixteen Queensland Year 3 students worked cooperatively with the researcher for 10 daily sessions, in 4 groups of 4 students of either high or low mathematical achievement level, on tasks introducing the hundreds place. Two groups used physical base-ten blocks and two used place-value software incorporating electronic base-ten blocks. Individual interviews assessed participants' place-value understanding before and after teaching sessions. Data sources were videotapes of interviews and teaching sessions, field notes, workbooks, and software audit trails, analysed using a grounded theory method. There was little difference evident in learning by students using either physical or electronic blocks. Many errors related to the "face-value" construct, counting and handling errors, and a lack of knowledge of base-ten rules were evident. Several students trusted the counting of blocks to reveal number relationships. The study failed to confirm several reported schemes describing children's conceptual structures for multidigit numbers. Many participants demonstrated a preference for grouping or counting approaches, but not stable mental models characterising their thinking about numbers generally. The independent-place construct is proposed to explain evidence in both the study and the literature that shows students making single-dimensional associations between a place, a set of number words, and a digit, rather than taking account of groups of 10. Feedback received in the two conditions differed greatly. Electronic feedback was more positive and accurate than feedback from blocks, and reduced the need for human-based feedback. Primary teachers are urged to monitor students' use of base-ten blocks closely, and to challenge faulty number conceptions by asking appropriate questions.

Crisp, Martin. "A study of teaching assistants' engagement with a mathematics block of learning." Thesis, Open University, 2017. http://oro.open.ac.uk/49458/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the learning experiences of students on a four-week block on mathematics as part of The Open University’s Foundation Degree for primary teaching assistants. The key research questions seek to identify the outcomes and processes of the teaching assistants’ study in relation to their work ‘supporting’ children’s mathematical learning, and their wider experience as teaching assistants. The study adopts an interpretivist, constructivist approach based on an illuminative evaluation framework (Parlett & Hamilton, 1972). A questionnaire gathered data from 67 students to provide a broad picture of their experience during the block. Progressively focused telephone interviews were carried out with nine students using their written assignments, online forum posts and questionnaire responses as prompts to discussion. From the literature review I identified two potentially relevant areas of theory, in particular, Harland & Kinder’s (1997) ordering of INSET outcomes, and Lave & Wenger’s (1991) theory of ‘legitimate peripheral participation’. All nine teaching assistants identified positive outcomes from their study relating to their practice, in particular their increased confidence in mathematics as a subject, and ability to work with children in a fine-grained way to the extent that many aspects of their practice might be more accurately characterised as teaching rather than ‘supporting’ learning. A key finding concerned the ways in which the teaching assistants’ study enabled them to develop agency as practitioners, and strengthened their participation in the professional life of their school. The study brought out how issues surrounding the learning of mathematics sometimes heightened the extent to which this occurred. Harland & Kinder’s hierarchy of INSET outcomes and the notion of legitimate peripheral participation were found to be helpful concepts for understanding the outcomes of the block of study on the work of teaching assistants, but were both identified as insufficiently nuanced to adequately characterise the diversity and complexity of their varied roles and individual career trajectories.

Abstract:
This study examines teacher practices and student learning as perceived by teachers within public high schools that have implemented block scheduling. Comparisons are made between the possibilities advanced by block scheduling advocates and the actual results as interpreted from the data gathered. Comparisons are made between teaching and learning with the traditional schedule and the manner in which it takes place with block scheduling. Open-ended questionnaires were developed for use with voluntary participants who had worked with traditional scheduling and now taught with some form of block scheduling. Participants recorded observations based solely upon personal perceptions of experiences with students while teaching in both scheduling designs. Special demographic data were provided by each participant, numerically recorded, and analyzed for statistical differences. This study reports on the generalized trends of the data reported to this researcher. Data revealed that teachers have not adopted new teaching strategies, perceive that they are teaching less, and only the higher achievers benefit from the scheduling innovation. Students do not learn more with a longer class period. Block scheduling produced some unanticipated consequences such as teachers competing for students, reduced club participation, and principals gaining the ability to assign teachers a greater percentage of their preparations away from their major area of study. The importance of this study lies with the revealed effects of block scheduling not found in any other literature. The research effort gives voice to those persons who actually implemented the scheduling innovation. By using these first person accounts, this study discusses questions surrounding the block scheduling controversy that are not presented in current literature and sheds new light on those that are.

Journal of Information Technology Education: Innovations in Practice, 2003. http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1001990.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The transfer and teaching of programming and programming related skills has become, increasingly difficult on an undergraduate level over the past years. This is partially due to the number of programming languages available as well as access to readily available source code over the Web. Source code plagiarism is common practice amongst many undergraduate students. This practice has a detrimental effect on the presentation of specific content relating to introduction to programming courses. One of the problems identified in the research conducted is that turnaround time with relation to assessment and feedback, which are presented to the students, is a critical factor in the subsequent success rates of the subject. This paper investigates, utilizing a literature review, how plagiarism detection metrics and a framework for providing effective feedback to students and educators could be implemented to enhance the teaching and learning processes. The predominant technique used for detecting plagiarism is to evaluate how a piece of source code was constructed over time. By analyzing the students’ programming patterns, lectures can be adapted to address problem areas and react accordingly. The paper also provides an overview of current metrics used for plagiarism detection and suggests ways of improving the process by including enhanced techniques for the gathering of metrics over time as well as suggesting ways to use the metrics to aid learning on all cognitive levels. Some of the key considerations presented as part of this research include effective feedback mechanisms and real-time responses to plagiarism as well as contributing towards learning on different cognitive levels.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the effect of three different high school scheduling options on the delivery of biology instruction, on student achievement, and on student perceptions of their instructional activities. Participants were biology students and teachers from twelve high schools in a north Texas urban school district of 76,000. Block classes had 11 to 18 percent less instructional time than traditional classes. Texas Biology I End-of-Course Examination achievement results for 3,195 students along with student and teacher surveys provided information on instructional activities, attitudes, and individualization. Using an analysis of variance at a j i< .01 the following results were found; student achievement was significantly different for each of the scheduled comparisons groups, test score means were not statistically significant between the scheduled comparison groups for different ethnic groups, economically disadvantaged students, and magnet students. No significant differences were found between the science learning activity index for each of the scheduled groups. Student response data when disaggregrated and reaggregrated into program groups found a statistically significant higher index of science activity at a p. < .01 for magnet students when compared to both the regular and honor students. Regular program students had a significantly higher index of individualization than honors program students. Accelerated and rotating block classes were found to hold a significantly more positive attitude about their science learning conditions than did the traditional students. These data suggest that during the first two years of block scheduling, the initial impact of block scheduling, where total time for science is reduced, results in lower student achievement scores when compared to traditionally scheduled classes. Yet, block scheduled student attitudes and perceptions about science learning are significantly more positive than the traditionally scheduled students.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of block scheduling and instructional strategies on student achievement in Algebra I. The study was conducted during the 1997-98 school year. This study was comprised of two components, a quantitative study and a qualitative study. The quantitative study focused on block and traditional scheduling and the influence identified through scores on the Texas End-of-Course exam for Algebra I. The sample for this study consisted of 59 school districts from five counties in the north Texas area. The qualitative portion of this study focused on 10 classrooms, 5 block and 5 traditional, taken from the sample of 59 districts. Data for the qualitative study included questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The End-of-Course scores were analyzed using an ANOVA at the .05 level of significance, no significant difference was identified in the achievement levels of the two groups. The qualitative data was organized by categories derived from the NCTM teaching standards. Data from this portion of the study indicated that teachers in both block and traditionally scheduled classes spend their class time in a similar manner, using similar materials, and using more traditional strategies. Additional analyses of data based upon usage of the graphing calculator and manipulatives also resulted in no significant difference. Although all comparisons between block and traditional scheduling and usage or non-usage of technology and/or manipulatives resulted in no significant difference, the block groups and those using technology and/or manipulatives had higher mean scores. This indicates that allowing teachers more time to use alternative instructional strategies would benefit the student, but this will not take place without the teacher receiving training and support.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to identify the processes that have been used for implementing the alternative scheduling plan of block scheduling in high schools. The study attempted to discover what professional development activities were used for the change, if teachers altered instruction, and what additional staff development was needed. The qualitative method of case study research was selected for the study. The investigator chose five public high schools, representing city and county systems and different professional development budgets and types of instructional support. Central office administrators who were responsible for the implementation of block scheduling, principals, and a purposeful sample of teachers were interviewed. Utilizing interview transcripts, field notes, and records, case studies were formulated for each school. A cross-site analysis was also developed. This aspect of the study focused on several themes that emerged from the case studies. These themes included reasons for the scheduling change; implementation procedures; professional development strategies; effects on instruction, students, and schools; and procedural and staff development needs. The conclusions of the study were as follows: a concern for students prompted the change; considerable effort was devoted to implementation; the 4 x 4 semester plan was the most common configuration; a considerable difference existed in the amounts schools spent for professional development; and staff development was integral to implementation. Additional conclusions were that block scheduling had both positive and negative effects on instruction; some teachers altered instruction with the schedule; the majority of students preferred a block schedule instead of a traditional one; the plan had a positive impact on the discipline, course offerings, and learning atmosphere of a school; and changes in implementation and professional growth would enhance the innovation. These conclusions will assist educators in developing and implementing procedural strategies and professional development plans for block scheduling, as well as other reform efforts.

Dugger, Chele L. "Stages of Implementation of Block Scheduling: Perceptions of School Climate in High Schools in the First Tennessee Regional District." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 1997. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2906.

Full text
Abstract:
A descriptive study was conducted to identify teachers' and principals' perceptions of school climate in four stages of a change to block scheduling: Initiation, the first year of Implementation, the second year of Implementation, and the third year of Implementation or Institutionalization. Data were collected from 442 teachers and principals in nine high schools in the First Tennessee Regional District in a stratified purposeful random sample using the Organizational Health Index (OHI), a 44-item survey, and a demographic information sheet. The survey has seven dimensions: Institutional Integrity, Initiating Structure, Consideration, Principal Influence, Resource Support, Morale, and Academic Support. These dimensions and the Total Climate scores were analyzed in the four stages of the change process. Demographic variables included gender, job title, age, level of education, years of experience, and subject assignment. The data were analyzed with a t-test or an analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine significant differences between and within groups, and a post-hoc test determined specific significant groups. There were no significant differences found in Total Climate scores or the Consideration dimension. There were also no significant differences in perceptions based on gender or education. There were significant differences found in all other dimensions and demographic variables. Block scheduling was found to have no effect to some positive effect on student learning and the way teachers teach. Block scheduling was not found to negatively affect school climate, and there is a need for continual professional development at each stage of the change process to address concerns revealed in this study.

Mullins, Rita S. "The Relationship of Experience, Education, and Tennessee Career Ladder Status to Teachers' Perceptions of Staff Development Needs in Block Scheduled Programs." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 1997. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2952.

Abstract:
The problem related to this study was to develop a clearer understanding of the staff development needs of high school classroom teachers implementing block scheduled programs. The purpose of this study was to determine if teachers' perceptions of staff development needs differed when teaching experience, education (highest degree earned), and Tennessee Career Ladder status were considered. Four levels of each independent variable were analyzed by six categories of perceptions, the dependent variables. The categories were: (a) Planning, (b) Knowledge, (c) Satisfaction with staff development, (d) Adult learning strategies, (e) Level of involvement, and (f) Impact on student testing and grades. The 181 classroom teachers from eight Northeast Tennessee county school systems were surveyed using an instrument containing 50 response items. The return rate was 79% (N = 143). Three research questions were answered by analyzing three null hypotheses using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Tukey multiple comparison tests. The alpha level was.05. The null hypothesis for all levels of teaching experience was retained. For all education or degree levels, the null hypothesis was retained except for the Educational Specialist group in the planning category and the Bachelor's group in the knowledge category. The null hypothesis for Tennessee Career Ladder status was retained except for the Level III group in the knowledge category. Beyond the analyses of hypotheses, other survey results indicated that policy makers must involve teachers in decisions about block scheduling implementation and staff development through inclusive, school-based planning committees. Teacher comments implied that periodic needs assessments, teacher support, program evaluation, and assessment of student learning are critical to block scheduling.

Abstract:
This study was designed to determine the effects of two different schedule types on mathematics achievement in public high school students. The instruments used included the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, given annually to all students in grades 3 through 11, the Texas Algebra I end-of-course examination, given as a district option to Algebra I students, and student final course grades as determined by classroom teachers. The study compared students' performance in these three areas during the 2004-2005 academic year in one suburban school district in North Texas. The study considers the type of schedule, either traditional or 8-block, between students in teachers' classes who teach the same course on both schedules concurrently. This study also investigates a qualitative aspect by including a short opinion survey of teachers' perceptions regarding student academic performance, teacher satisfaction and retention, and the ability to accomplish curricular goals. Findings from this research suggest course schedule does not have significant effects on student academic performance as measured using analyses of covariance comparisons with a 0.05 alpha-level, leading to the conclusion that a particular course schedule does not adversely impact student performance on academic measures. However, in some comparisons conducted within the course of the research, statistically significant results emerged. Qualitative data generated from a survey of teacher perceptions regarding the benefits of the two scheduling types, traditional 50-minute verses alternating day 8-block, suggested teachers preferred a traditional schedule over that of a block schedule design. Most teachers who responded to the survey instrument expressed the perception that traditional daily meeting classes allowed their students to be more successful. Additional research into the effects of scheduling types on students academic performance are suggested and would include examining larger population samples, a narrower study of specific courses within the field of mathematics, or an expansion of the content areas explored to fields such as science, languages, or non-academic core subjects, including the fine arts.

Abstract:
Within the last decade there has been a significant increase in the range of Social Media tools that have become available. This has led to a significant increase in the use and popularity of Social Media within many aspects of everyday life, particularly within the UK and US. One of the areas in which there has been a rise in the use of Social Media is within Higher Education (HE). Within HE there have been reports that Social Media has been successfully utilized for teaching and learning, particularly in the case of blogs. Despite reportedly successful usage there has to date been relatively few empirical studies which have explored whether the use of blogs within teaching and learning leads to an increase in perceived learning by students. This research study therefore provides an empirical study of perceived learning by students when using blogs within teaching and learning in UK and US HE. This research study adopts a post positivist research approach and a quantitative research design method. Questionnaires have been utilised in order to explore student views of perceived learning when using blogs as a tool for HE teaching and learning within the UK and US. This study provides a framework for student use of blogs within HE teaching and learning and explores whether the use of blogs in this way leads to greater levels of perceived learning amongst students. The results of this research are analysed using PLS-SEM and have shown that the successful use of blogs for teaching and learning is complex. The results have demonstrated that students do report higher degrees of learning from using blogs within teaching and learning, however, this is influenced by the perceptions students hold relating to digital technology, teaching and learning, previous experience and expectations of blogging. The results of this study have implications for both HE teachers and HE students and provides a framework which can be used to help ensure the successful use of blogs when utilised for HE teaching and learning within the UK and US in the future.

On the global relations between literature and media, the Internet emerges as a medium for the dissemination and reading of literary work. This method of disclosure ultimately demonstrates the subject´s need to share his thoughts on politics, philosophy, art, and express his literary tastes through writing. Regarding the latter, Web surfers use blogs, our object of study, to disseminate both poems by renowned authors of the literary canon as well as their own poems. Thus, in an analytical perspective about the way the reading of poetry in that medium happens, theoretical notions of the reader were taken in consideration, support, reading, blog and cyberspace, through recent studies on the relationship between the reader and the medium used to read considering that when the support changes, the reading forms change, besides the theoretical regarding cyberculture. This dissertation aims to understand how poetry reading occurs in the blogs, reflecting the way they circulate, as they are read and approved in cyberspace, on the view that poetry is gaining readers and being a motivational tool for its reading. For this purpose, we created a blog to supporte our analysis. Considering the popularity of blogs and resources, we bring this support as an additional tool for the poetry reading in schools, creating theoretical and methodological alternatives to help teaching process and reading of poetry on this medium, using as a strategy the construction of other blogs by high school students, which are coordinated during a certain period, through a research, at times, based on ethnographic research.

The dissertation presented here aimed to investigate the significant learning obtained by high school students, live in and chat with other students, to develop projects in a learning environment blogs. This work stems from my concerns about what being a student. Believing that students are not accumulators of information, but learners and future citizens, invest in an educational project to modify its status as a "school-goers" to "student" and in the process acquire meaningful learning, meeting my aspirations. To be effective, proposed research projects that left the concerns of students through the methodology of learning projects. In this methodology the teacher dismisses the prime location, giving students the opportunity to learn because they want to do it. To visualize the learning, and if they are significant, the surveys were available in blogs, created and maintained by students, while developing their projects. While their research, which led them to be agents of their knowledge, students were encouraged to visit the blogs of colleagues, to see and interact with their research, thus having the possibility to live and chat with your colleagues researchers. The use of blogs as a pedagogical tool in a high school class, its function is to create opportunities for students to access the computer network, making it the classroom, a friendly and commonplace, and insert them in the preparation of research. Because learning is not an airtight case, I as a teacher and researcher, while accompanying the students' projects, blogs, was also questions about what they wrote in order to instigate them to look more and more about their projects and thus broaden their knowledge. For the analysis of learning using the methodology of the Collective Subject Discourse - DSC proposed by Lefevre Lefevre and the concept of enaction proposed by Varela. In the texts published, we made inquiries and responses provided by groups, it was possible to see how students acquire knowledge, and further, that this knowledge be assimilated to produce significant learning, for seeking answers to their questions and showed the reworking resignifying The conceptual research that had its focus on meaningful learning, enhanced by use of the methodology of learning projects and visualized on blogs education, showed that by changing the way high school students are treated in school we are providing opportunities to build meaningful learning.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Public spheres theories provide purpose and direction to composition instruction: the teaching of writing within this context empowers our students to participate in public discourse and make a difference in communities. New media has been celebrated for its democratic nature, and composition instructors have begun to use public spheres theories as they incorporate new media in the classroom to create a protopublic space. Yet most composition instructors have ignored the wealth of evidence that shows that the Internet is not as democratic as it seems. As such, our new media teaching practices should account for both the democratic opportunities and failures of the Internet. By using examples from my own classroom, I demonstrate how blogs can be used within the composition classroom by focusing on public spheres oriented teaching practices and methods. Four specific pedagogical approaches which instructors can incorporate are discussed: embracing the small-scale, counterpublic, and private potential of the blog; teaching students rhetorical skills which enable them to contribute more meaningfully to online conversations; teaching aspects of online infrastructure and distribution; and consciously using Habermas' criteria of public spheres to construct an online public community of class members. By using new media in the composition classroom, teachers can promote civic virtues within our students, support democracy, and positively transform the Internet's public space.

Abstract:
This research presents as a study theme the Portuguese language teachers perfor-mance in the hypermodern world. It seems that a new teachers profile can be ob-served through the language and strategies that employ in the use at blogs. There-fore, a limitation of this new profile, in contrast to the profile of the traditional teacher of the classroom became necessary. The objective of this research was to determine whether the language area of teacher blogs meet the needs of learners, adapting their language to the virtual environment. This is justified because it is a new and different playing field of the classroom, as well being an environment that demands a more entrepreneurial profile. With the classrooms virtualization for high, the discus-sion revolves around what would be priority for the learning process of students and would be purely personal interest. With that in mind, was formulated the research question: To act through blogs, teachers prepare enough, watching the language learning programs and adapting the latter to the digital universe, with proper use of hypertext, the usability criteria and the interactivity criteria and the virtual communica-tion? This study was based on authors of TIC (interactivity, usability, hypertext elements etc.), Sociology (hypermodernity subject, hypermodern etc.), Applied Linguis-tics (genres, communication, language etc.), and Education (training teachers). This is supported by official documents published by the MEC were consulted. In this case, in addition to literature for theoretical reasons, we opted for the methodology of quantitative and qualitative research, useful for the development of this research. The results shows that among the main functions of the teacher and those actions that point to a more entrepreneurial profile, these teachers already innovate revolutionize and create different ways for your act. Perhaps, the weakness still lies in the fact that teachers are in the fact that teachers are in phase of transition technology, with requires having something to do.

In the context of a time marked by the interplay between the mind (cognition), and reframing the use of information (knowledge) and cyberspace (digital literacy), education is conducted to undertake the process of teaching-learning (teachinglearning process) increasingly consistent with the historical stage of the network society. Therefore, this research study investigated the phenomenon of teachinglearning process (teaching-learning/ learning-teaching) from educational blogs in the context of the lived world school (high school). The research was based on the following question: how teaching-learning process phenomenon manifests itself through the use of blogs in educational context of the High school? To answer this question, the research methodology adopted an empirical classification, brokered by quanti-qualitative approach, assuming exploratory and descriptive dimensions. For the interpretation of the data, the research was based on analysis of the content from the mixed model of organizing categories, defined a priori (theory) and readapted the investigatory process (empirical).Data collection took place in the context of the blogosphere, using mixed questionnaire applied to the teacher s bloggers participating in the study group "Educational Blogs". Of the 1,393 teachers registered in the group, from public schools (municipal, state and federal) in several states of Brazil, thirty were willing to participate and, of these, twenty returned the questionnaire in a timely manner. The results provided an understanding that the integration of educational blogs in educational practice of teachers can foster the process of teaching-learning process, i.e. teaching and learning are (re) defined with the use of educational blogs beyond the class room. The results also reveal that, in the field of High School education, digital communication technologies in learning (DCTL) dualism as linkages to systemic world (domination / for education) and to the lived world (liberation through education), assuming prospects antagonistic in education. However, as an initiative teaching, the cyberspace pedagogy through awesome blogs apron as via didactic-pedagogic whose emancipatory potential reverberates educational processes in high school the chance to revitalize and streamline the lived world school, since aprendência through awesome blogs not limited by regulatory power is by the same educational policy that pegged the state assumes interests arising from the systemic world.

This dissertation came of concern about the way scientific learning is approached in childhood education. It shows a how the children construct the meaning of scientific knowledge starting from environmental reality they live, emphasizing the observation and the perception of this environment. It is a qualitative research and the conception of research utilized is the investigation so that the teenagers reflect on your practice with the goal to transform it. The set of activities made have been four didactic projects (DP, or PD in portuguese) and the didactic sequences (DS, SD in portuguese), based on learning theory fundamentals of the meaning, considering the David Ausubel's propositions and collaborators and the scientific culture focused on critical environmental education. The data analysis obtained throughout the instruments utilizes to take them like: audio records, written records on the field notes, text productions, draws and text made by children (attempt to write) conducted to realize the children learn by reception and discovering, able to form and assimilate concepts when create new relevant conceptions to use in cognitive structure a cognitive bridge for new learning. Abstract:
This study explored effectiveness of blog-based writing and compares it to traditional ‘paper and pen’ English narrative in a primary school classroom. A group of 30 primary five (P5) students were selected based on results of a pre-test, and randomly assigned into one of two groups: blog group and pen group. The students had six English composition lessons with focus on narrative writing. The students from both groups were in same class, and teaching was conducted by a single English teacher. Only difference between the two groups was that the blog group students composed their writing assignments with computers in the computer laboratory through the blog interface. The pen group worked in the classroom in traditional ‘paper and pen’ way. The post-test was conducted after six lessons, and questionnaires and evaluation forms were administered to provide data. In addition, data collection included artefacts produced by students. Collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data suggest that blogging can support writing in three areas. Firstly, blogging helps to increase the volume of writing produced by students. Secondly, blogging supports improvement in quality of narrative writing, more specifically in areas of Vocabulary, Language Use and Mechanics. Finally, blogging enhances students’ positive attitude towards writing. It Using Blogs to promote English narrative writing in Hong Kong Primary School ii is hoped that the results of the study will have encouraging effect on English teachers in a primary school classroom to apply blogging for purpose of improving students’ writing.

Abstract:
This study investigated the implications that the scheduling of a block module for a computer competency course over two weeks, has had on the curriculum. The block module was presented at the start of the first semester, 2001 at the Vaal Triangle Technikon. The objectives were to: develop a flexible, outcomes-based curriculum in which the learners had to demonstrate capability and employability by integrating computer competencies in other modules; design and implement an effective learning and teaching strategy in order to ensure that learners will achieve the learning outcomes within two weeks; and to . implement continuous, integrative assessment methods in order to foster the learning of hands-on skills that can be integrated in the learners' academic programmes. The researcher followed an action research approach, in order to assess the improvement of current educational practices. A target group of first-year learners was divided into a block module-group and a semester-group. The researcher made use of data triangulation, by collecting qualitative and quantitative data comprising structured interviews and open-ended and structured questionnaires completed at different stages of the project. This research report comprises three articles. The first article reports on the high success rate of the block module-group and reveal that these learners could retain. and utilise the computer competencies that they had to utilise for completing assignments, to a larger degree than the semester-group. The second article reports that experiential learning, as an outcomes-based strategy, fosters learning in accelerated learning contexts. The third article concludes that the continuous integrative approach to assessment fosters w-operation, feedback through self-assessment and the ability of learners to apply computer competencies in new situations. It is recommended that lecturers in all the associated departments should collaboratively assign and assess tasks in progressive advanced modules. It concludes that, in order to utilise resources optimally when scheduling block modules, ail associated departments would have to be fully modularised.

Abstract:
In recent years, the information and communication technologies (ICT) have made important contributions to the teaching/learning process. New thoughts and means of interaction are commonly involved student/pupil, pupil/teacher. Today, it has been realized, with access to the Internet, the blog comes being used in schools as an educational orientation, mainly with purpose for greater integration between students and teachers. When it comes to schools, I observed individual authorship, blogs or even collective authorship, as built, for example, for teachers and students. This inevitable connectivity, we will look at how this interface has interfered in the process of teaching/learning in a public school of the city of Maceió/AL. The survey reflects on the relationship between the technology and the training of teacher, combining their practices to the theories studied. The text is divided into two chapters. In the first, we can observe some theoretical aspects ranging from setting up a blog for the realization of research, bypassing productions that had used the blog as an object of study and the methodology used in the research. In the second chapter, we present data collected and the various interpretations concerning the use of the interface in the teaching/learning of the English language, with regard to the study and understanding of the lexicon on the part of students. We also present interviews well in the target language, now in mother tongue and our interpretations and understandings about learning of students using the blog as an interface. The sample is a teacher of the English language and with the 22 students that make up the class. In this perspective, we will evaluate the use of blogs has contributed effectively in the educational process, taking into consideration the wealth of material found in this virtual environment, mainly by the expansion of traditional notions of reading and writing in contemporary social practices.

Abstract: The present research is inserted in the area of Language and Technology, and, as its central focus is the making of blogs, it seeks to investigate the possibilities the new digital genres offer to text production teaching in schools. The study presupposes that it is desirable to bring into the classroom the language experiences of which the students already live everyday. This essay reports the results of two studies which were carried out upon proposed activities to some high school students in a private school, whose classrooms are fully equipped for the use of technology. This research was motivated after establishing that those resources had not been properly explored in pedagogical practices. The theoretical component for this research initially discusses the importance of technology in educational contexts and the relevance in revising the language nature, considering the transformations that technology promote. Next, a general discussion about blog, which is the explored space in the task, proposed in two empirical studies. First, the empirical component reports an unsuccessful experience, trying to understand the factors that explain its failure. The second empirical study tries to get around the flaws identified on the first, modifying the nature of the proposed task, so that offering the students more action freedom. The results point out that it is pertinent to use blog as a pedagogical tool and that the use of this resource is encouraging to the students and it may bring about complex and creative productions.

Abstract:
Evaluate contributions and limitations concerning the use of blog´s technology as teaching empowering tool, especially in primary education, is the subject of this dissertation. Through the blog employment, is expected to foster the development and mastery of scientific language, and consequent understanding of content related to natural science, allowing the recording and analysis of topics related to astronomy and science. The analysis presented throughout this work is based on the assumptions of the Meaningful Learning Theory of David Ausubel and collaborators, and the Zone of Proximal Development, concept of Lev Vygotsky Learning Theory. The data consisted of records made by students, teachers and other participants in blog, complemented by work done by students in the classroom. Data were analyzed using content analysis and, therefore, were organized into two sets: the first refers to students in the 5th grade, along 2011 and 2012; the second set relates to the same students in 2015 and 2016, in the 9th grade. Among the results obtained, it is highlighted that the shared use of communication technologies (ICT) encouraged curiosity and interaction between the participants of the blog, a fact that may have contributed to the improvement of language use and ownership of scientific concepts by students. It is expected that blogs as reported in this work could be a meaningful tool for scientific language appropriation for other realities and levels of education, and encourages the continued and collaborative learning among participants.

Abstract:
Alla elever i åk 5 fick starta varsin skolblogg.
This thesis demonstrates thefactors that young pupils find motivating when it comes to writing a schoolblog. During my last teacherpractice I introduced school blogs to all the students in year 5. The studentsworked with the blogs for five weeks and I observed that the majority of thestudents really enjoyed this teaching method. I haveinterviewed 12 students in the class to find out what the factors of theirmotivation were about working in this way. I found out that the factors thatmotivated the students the most was: the importance of multiple readers, thefact that they got to do something different and exiting, to get more time withthe computer, to write, to read their classmates blogs and to play around withthe design and layout of the blog etc. Thisinformation will help teachers to understand what students find motivating aboutwriting school blogs and also to understand that we have good use of the differentpossibilities that the Internet can offer us in the way of finding new methodsto teach.

This paper presents a survey conducted through collaborative work, which took place in a suburb school in the city of Uberlandia-MG. The research is characterized as case study and has a qualitative approach. Had the objective to look for different strategies of teaching and learning through the use of technology in pedagogical practice. Regarding the methodology in this research, we analyzed the work with the support of blogs, whose pages were used for student records and discussions directed to the geometry content. The students who were attending the fifth (5th) year of elementary school were invited to participate in this project. However, the research subjects were only those students who accepted the invitation to participate in the study through statement signed by parents. The project was developed with 30 students in the second half of 2014 and another 30 in the first half of 2015. The physical space at school, where most of the project activities were done was at the computer lab. In the process of compiling the data, at school, the following instruments were used: field notes produced by the entire project team, photographs and footage of the activities produced in the computer lab and in classroom (recorded by the research team) questionnaires, interviews, virtual space records: the blogs. The results of this research mainly focused on the analysis of the fifth year student‟s productions records in blogs. Regarding the conclusion, the research has shown that blogs, software and differentiated dynamic studies attracted the student‟s attention, leaving them mostly instigated by the unknown. Gradually, students built their own knowledge from their mistakes and successes. The entire work process enabled the computer lab to be an environment that is used not just to solving computerized and tedious drills. The blogs production work in groups, developed in students the reading and writing of both the mother language as symbols and mathematical nomenclature. The interaction between students became noticeable throughout the project, since it provided the student‟s personal growth, respect, tolerance and mutual cooperation. In this sense, we concluded that the project greatly contributed to the students' literacy process in the mother language, mathematics and computer literacy.

Working as a teacher in Education of Young People and Adults in a public school motivated me to create and use a blog to complement the Portuguese lessons. The use of this resource not only aimed at building a bank of materials and activities but also sought to insert students in the digital context. Therefore this research had as objectives to describe and analyze the teacher s experience regarding this resource in Portuguese lessons in groups of young people and adults from the teacher s field notes as well as to identify and evaluate the receptivity of the students in relation to the introduction and use of the blog from the comments in it and questionnaires. The theoretical basis of this research are centered on Social-Historical- Cultural Theory (Vygotsky, 1934/1998), on Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994/2000) and on the notion of Appraisal (Martin, 2003, 2005) as well as on the concept of Critical Reflection (Schön, 2000). This research was developed based on the qualitative research paradigm (Flink, 2004) and it is characterized as a case study (Lüdke, 1986; Ventura, 2007). At the end of this work, its contributions to the area of new technologies applied to education became evident, specifically in the courses for young people and adults, since as a result of the process generated by means of the blog implementation, I show that it is possible for the students view the computer and its multiple resources as an efficient alternative to deepen their knowledge
