Abstract:
This article aims to better understand constraints (e.g., hostility toward spirituality) and opportunities that may affect teacher-student and student-student relations as spiritually informed ELT curriculum is negotiated. Viewed more broadly, spirituality aims to foster the ability to see one’s own religious positioning in relation to other people who have different faiths, and the commitment to being connected with other people, as well as nature, with love. In terms of pedagogical methodology, negotiating the place of spirituality in ELT means creatively keeping the balance of mainstreaming and decentering different senses of spirituality. It is in line with Kumaravadivelu’s theoretical lens of postmethod pedagogy which sheds light on how a teacher theorized negotiating power relations associated with his spirituality; how a teacher exploited a religious issue unique to a specific context in Indonesia; and how the dialogue of religious issues can be extended beyond what already happened in class. Regarding spiritually informed materials development, this article focuses on teacher-student co-development of spiritually informed materials and adaptations of non-ELT materials. The article concludes with some pedagogical implications and major questions to be addressed in future research on spiritually informed ELT curriculum.

Abstract:
Research on workplace spirituality is on the rise primarily because of the win-win situation it creates for both employees and organizations. Spirituality at work has been associated with many individual-level work behaviour and attitudes. Also, self-efficacy is another significant construct which considerably affects individual work experiences. The current study focuses on the relationship between workplace spirituality, self-efficacy and organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) in secondary school teachers. It examines whether spirituality and teacher efficacy could predict citizenship behaviour of teachers. Additionally, the influence of spirituality on self-efficacy is also looked at. Data were collected from 353 teachers working in state-run schools in one of the southern states in India. Using structural equation modeling, the study finds that positive relationships exist between different dimensions of workplace spirituality, teacher efficacy and two categories of OCBs. The study contributes to the growing empirical research on workplace spirituality and the underexplored area of teacher OCB.

Abstract:
This study argues that organizational and personal conditions affect teachers in achieving well-being at work. The workplace well-being construct was developed based on the hedonic, eudaimonic approach and empirical exploration of teachers. This construct is adapted to the conditions of the Islamic school organization. This study proposes transformational leadership and workplace spirituality as determining factors for achieving teacher workplace well-being. The sequential exploratory approach is used to formulate the construct of workplace well-being for Islamic school teachers and prove the role of transformational leadership and workplace spirituality as antecedents of teacher workplace well-being in Islamic schools. An important finding from this study is the formulation of the teacher's workplace well-being, namely the social dimension, the emotional dimension, the professional dimension, and the 'Amal Jariyah dimension. Leadership behavior and teachers' spiritual strength play a role in attaining teacher workplace well-being in Islamic schools.

Abstract:
While many scholars focus on the spirituality of the teacher and its effects on a class (Byler, 2009; Purgason, 2009; Morgan, 2009; Ferris, 2009), the students’ spirituality and how it reveals itself in the classroom cannot be disregarded (Vandrick, 2009; Smith, 2009). Students have the potential to add and change any classroom dynamic through the beliefs they have. These spiritual beliefs can influence student reactions in communicative activities and interactions with teachers and peers. Learning motivation and attitude can also be linked to a student’s spiritual or religious identity (Lepp-Kaethler & Dornyei, 2013). Learners should be free to be themselves and think for themselves in class, without any occurring bias or coercion. (Brown, 2009) This paper provides suggested approaches of how teachers can maintain balance in a classroom of religiously diverse students, allowing for the expression of various beliefs, while being aware, sensitive, and respectful of those variances.

AbstractThree-fourths of the 180 Centers for Teaching Excellence found in U.S. colleges and universities have been developed over the last decade. Excellence in Teaching has never been discussed more. Yet clarity about what actually constitutes quality in teaching is not at all apparent. This essay suggests a contrast between two ways of conceiving excellence in teaching—an excellence of achievement as compared to an excellence of desire. The one, based on a marketing model of education, stresses measurable outcomes, with an emphasis on the acquisition of information. The other, drawing from themes in the history of Christian spirituality, evokes a wisdom tradition that nourishes unsatisfied desire as a principal goal. In the latter, less importance is ascribed to the teacher's self-conscious need to call attention to his or her particular competence. Set free from “the maintenance of control,” the teacher can be more open to a common search (and excellence) to which everyone contributes.

This article suggests attention to the paideia of the soul as an educative corrective for preparing open distance learning students for living in the current technology-dependent world. This world is undergirded by a technology-rich knowledge society that privileges new informational epistemologies. In an attempt to suggest a spirituality of open distance learning that is based on the paideia (full-blown completeness) of the soul, use is made of the integrated interpretations of three relevant viewpoints. It is shown that spirituality in open distance learning is neither religion nor ethics; that it is essentially about the meaning in and of life, meaning-making and meaning-decoding, self-transcendence (especially as meaning-making), connection, engagement and a re-interrogation of all the major existentialist questions. It is a journey towards wholeness and compassion (as knowledge of love) of every student teacher.

AbstractThis essay is a testimonial account of the author's apprenticeship with a yoga teacher in the Hindu pilgrimage town of Rishikesh, Northern India. It explores the meeting of Western and Eastern attitudes to spirituality, desire, the body, study, and breathing. In particular, it seeks to register the encounter with the Vedantin and yogic notions of the "cave of the heart" as privileged space for prayer, peace, and meditation.

Abstract:
The majority of research on yoga focuses on its psychophysiological and therapeutic benefits, while the spiritual aspects are rarely addressed. Changes of specific aspects of spirituality were thus investigated among 160 individuals (91% women, mean age years; 57% Christians) starting a 2-year yoga teacher training. We used standardized questionnaires to measure aspects of spirituality (ASP), mindfulness (FMI—Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory), life satisfaction (BMLSS—Brief Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale), and positive mood (lightheartedness/relief). At the start of the course, scores of the respective ASP subscales forsearch for insight/wisdom, transcendence conviction, andconscious interactions/compassionwere high, while those forreligious orientationwere low. Within the 6 month observation period, bothconscious interactions/compassion(effect size, Cohen’s ),Religious orientation(),Lightheartedness/Relief() and mindfulness () increased significantly. Particularly non-religious/non-spiritual individuals showed moderate effects for an increase ofconscious interactions/compassion. The results from this study suggest that an intensive yoga practice (1) may significantly increase specific aspects of practitioners’ spirituality, mindfulness, and mood, (2) that these changes are dependent in part on their original spiritual/religious self-perception, and (3) that there are strong correlations amongst these constructs (i.e.,conscious interactions/compassion, and mindfulness).

Abstract:
Spiritual literature takes the foremost role in the history of literature. Spiritual literature has the tendency to impact our spirit and leads us afloat on the ocean of happiness. Every religion has been at certain points of time propounded by a teacher and later spread throughout the globe by their students. However some of the worship methods predate the era of literature. Islam is a religion that grew through the teachings of Nabi. Many saints have expressed the immense state of spiritual attainment by forsaking the material joys of the world through their songs. Many religions have used the Tamil language as a medium of expressing their ideology. All religions are unified by their emotive spirituality. Dhayumanavar and Gunangudiyar occupy a significant position in the history of literature. Eventhough their means to spirituality differs they express similar spiritual experiences. The purpose of this article is to research on the similarity observed in their mode of prayer and descriptions in each of their Paraparakkanni.

Abstract:
<p><em>Letters of a Javanese Princess is a translated literary work from a compilation of letters entitled Door Duisternis tot Licht (Out of Dark Comes Light). This work was written by Raden Adjeng Kartini and generally portrayed women's emancipation and education. As a root of women's education, tracing the history of the detailed concept of Indonesian education from this work means knowing the original concept of a good teacher and some teaching principles. Thus, Kartini’s teacher concept and principles were analysed in this article. Based on the analysis, the first finding shows that there are two teaching principles that Kartini has. The first is that teaching should include moral and intellectual aspects. According to Kartini, education does not only mean educating the brain but also having concern about morality and spirituality. The second is that the material of teaching should be suitable for the need of the era and students. The second finding shows that there are three points to be a good teacher: a teacher should get basic education for the profession, a teacher should be an excellent example for students, and a teacher should teach opened-mindedness, love, rights, and justice. Those important things are aimed to raise education for our nation.</em></p><p> </p>

Abstract:
Since 1996 Directorate General of Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education has been emphasizing the importance of giving ecological education so that pupils will have concern for caring and keeping the integrity of creation. This is in line with the teaching of the Catholic Church, which is strengthened by Pope Francis in his encyclical letter, Laudato Si’, published on May 24, 2015. From answers to questionnaires distributed to five Catholic teachers teaching at urban schools can be concluded that (1) ecological spirituality should become foundation of ecological education, (2) themes on ecological education found in elementary school thematic lessons should be understood as efforts to build ecological morality, and (3) the need for providing an example of a drama script which can be used by teachers as a method of teaching materials on ecological education. This research aimed at developing a book prototype entitled Caring for the Earth as Our “Common Home”: A Reflection on Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ (for Elementary School Teachers). This book prototype has articles on ecological spirituality and ecological education as well as a drama script which can be used by teachers of fifth grade to teach third theme “Healthy Food,” second sub-theme “The Importance of healthy food for human body.” The development of this book prototype utilizes five of ten steps of Research and Development according to Borg & Gall: (1) analyzing the needs of developing a book prototype of ecological education, (2) studies on ecological education found in thematic lessons at elementary school, (3) developing a book prototype, (4) validation of the book prototype, and (5) revision of the book prototype. Findings of the research showed that the book prototype could be published. This was shown by evaluation given by a lecturer of biology with a mean score of 3.5 and evaluation given by a five grade teacher with a mean score 3.75. These mean scores are very high.

Abstract:
The Stoudite monk Niketas Stethatos played an important role in the religious life of Constantinople. Of particular importance are his Spiritual Centuries. In-depth analysis of this text reveals that it not only contains teachings about various aspects of spirituality. Niketas also makes numerous statements about the role of the mystic within society, which have no precedent in earlier spiritual literature. These statements are surprisingly specific and reflect Niketas’ self-image as a charismatic, his attempts to establish himself as an authoritative teacher of the Constantinopolitan populace, and his bitter feuds with those who opposed his activities.

Abstract:
The purpose of this ethnographic study was to investigate the Montclair State University’s West African drum and dance ensemble. Analyses of the data revealed three themes related to individual participants and the “lived reality” of the group as a whole, and to the social-cultural teaching–learning processes involved: spirituality, community-as-oneness, and communal joy. My motivation for undertaking this inquiry arose from the fact that, beginning in the 1960s, music education scholars in the United States have been concerned about the widespread marginalization of non-Western musics in American music teacher education programs. This situation is still a major concern because American undergraduate and graduate music teacher preparation remains overwhelmingly dominated by Western classical styles. This situation runs contrary to the massive social, cultural, situational, and musical diversity of American students’ lives. As one small effort to advance musical diversity in my own university music school context, I developed the proposal for and initiated the Montclair State University’s West African drum and dance ensemble.

The original research project of this study was aimed to find out the components of culture and their impacts on ako (teaching-learning) within the early childhood teacher education programmes. Ethics Approval was obtained from AUT Ethics Committee. Under a socio-cultural theoretical framework, twelve lecturers from three Tertiary Education Organisations (TEOs) were interviewed. Three cohorts of student teachers from the same TEOs participated in focus groups. Using manual thematic coding, nine broad areas of cultural components were identified. These were bicultural contexts of Aotearoa, ethnicities and multi-culturalism, individual identities, cross-cultural interactions, comfort zone, female majority, socio-economic struggles, spirituality and technology. A recently developed framework for cultural sustainability (Soini and Dessein, 2016) were applied to these areas. Some of these components were identified as more inert and less dynamic, while the rest were recognised at the other end of the framework. The data and the principle findings were contextual to Aotearoa New Zealand. However, the discussion considered the overall global trends in relation to education. Keywords: Cultural diversity, cultural sustainability,

Abstract:
In this article, the author shows how Catherine of Siena, a mystic who lived in Italy for thirty-three years in the second part of the fourteenth century, known for ecstasies and revelations, put discretion (and prudence, its synonym), the leading virtue in the moral life, at the core of her spirituality, thus becoming a real lover of the truth and a teacher of true freedom. The article contains bibliographical references for the reader’s further study of the writings (Dialogue, Letters, and Prayers) linked to this formidable figure, who was canonized in 1461 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970. Catherine’s teaching, firmly anchored in what the Church and her great Doctors have always taught, remains to this day a rich treasure for spiritual growth.
