Abstract:
The Australian Soil Classification provides a framework for organising knowledge about Australian soils. It provides a means of communication among scientists and land managers. It is useful for those involved in environmental studies and for teachers of soil science. Since its publication in 1996, the Australian Soil Classification has been widely adopted and formally endorsed as the official nation system. It has proven to be of particular value in land resource survey and research programs. This revised edition includes some significant changes to the Tenosol soil order and these will substantially improve the utility of the system in southern and western parts of the continent.

Farne, Hugo, Edward Norris-Cervetto, and James Warbrick-Smith. Oxford Cases in Medicine and Surgery. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198716228.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Oxford Cases in Medicine and Surgery, second edition, teaches students a logical step-by-step diagnostic approach to common patient presentations. This approach mirrors that used by successful clinicians on the wards, challenging students with questions at each stage of a case (history-taking, examination, investigation, management). In tackling these questions, students understand how to critically analyse information and learn to integrate their existing knowledge to a real-life scenario from start to finish. Each chapter focuses on a common presenting symptom (e.g. chest pain). By starting with a symptom, mirroring real life settings, students learn to draw on their knowledge of different physiological systems - for example, cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology - at the same time. All the major presenting symptoms in general medicine and surgery are covered, together with a broad range of pathologies. This book is an essential resource for all medicine students, and provides a modern, well-rounded introduction to life on the wards. Ideal for those starting out in clinical medicine and an ideal refresher for those revising for OSCEs and finals.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter argues that the future of the traditional forms of culture, knowledge, and scholarship appears to be at risk, as the world becomes digital and new generations consider computers, mobile appliances, and the Internet as extensions of their body that are essential for living. The book provides a survey of critical editing confronted with the digital world that is organized in three parts. The first one discusses the historical context and the main challenges that researchers, teachers, and the public readers meet with the integration of digital tools and medium in the activity of critical edition. The second one details how critical edition deals with the technical constraints it faces in order to explore new presentation modalities of heritage texts. The last one looks at critical edition practice through examining cases that range from data capture and layout to the institutional and organizational conditions for production.

Kennedy, Eileen, and Diana Laurillard. Online Learning Futures. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350324268.

Abstract:
The rapid shift online during the Covid-19 pandemic has put online learning firmly on the agenda of universities everywhere. To realise fully the transformative potential of online learning this book argues the need for an evidence-based design approach. The evidence comes from the experiences of online learners who are professionals: educators, engineers and researchers. Design-based research, survey responses and interviews with these learners will demonstrate that open, online, collaborative learning experiences are not only feasible but effective for building professional community knowledge. This kind of innovative online learning can help universities contribute to the global public good by achieving high quality learning at scale that will widen access to professional education and create more porous boundaries between universities and the wider community, for example in the context of the current policy discussions on the UN SDGs, such climate and inequality. The evidence shows how co-designed, transformative digital education can be mobilised to support, e.g., teachers in crisis contexts, professionals investigating renewable energy solutions, or medics adapting treatments to local conditions, and also scale up professional development in areas where expertise is urgently required. The book concludes that scaled up online learning can enable HE to deliver on the UN SDGs by equipping citizens and communities with the knowledge and skills needed to solve the world’s most pressing problems.

Patel, Eboo, and Cassie Meyer. Teaching Interfaith Leadership. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190677565.003.0021.

Full text
Abstract:
As religious diversity increases, there is an opportunity in the religious studies or theology classroom to teach students the knowledge and skills that will allow them to constructively engage that diversity in their professions. In this chapter, we sketch a concrete, interdisciplinary approach to teaching what we call “interfaith leadership” in the college classroom. We begin by offering a working definition of interfaith leadership, and then explore strategies for teaching interfaith leadership, including resources and activities. Surveyed approaches to teaching the knowledge aspect of interfaith leadership include texts exploring the interactions of diverse religious communities, theologies or ethics of interfaith cooperation, and spiritual autobiographies. Approaches to teaching the skills aspect of interfaith engagement include case studies, interfaith events, projects to build interfaith cooperation, and partnerships with interfaith groups and organizations.

Krebs, Robert E. Groundbreaking Scientific Experiments, Inventions and Discoveries of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Greenwood Press, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400659690.

Full text
Abstract:
"The Middle Ages and the Renaissance were a period of scientific and literary reawakening. Scientific development and a renewed interest in classical science led to new discoveries, inventions, and technologies. Between 500 and 1600 a.d., scientific explorers rediscovered ancient Greek and Eastern knowledge, which led to an eruption of fresh ideas. This reference work describes more than 75 experiments, inventions, and discoveries of the period, as well as the scientists, physicians, and scholars responsible for them. Individuals such as Leonardo da Vinci, Marco Polo, and Galileo are included, along with entries on reconstructive surgery, Stonehenge, eyeglasses, the microscope, and the discovery of smallpox. Part of a unique series that ranges from ancient times to the 20th century, this exploration of scientific advancements during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance will be useful to high school and college students, teachers, and general readers seeking information about significant advances in scientific history.

Abstract:
Division of Paediatric Surgery, at the University of Cape Town and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital has been in the forefront of modern surgical training by introduction of online training and surgical skills training. The dramatised teaching on surgical conditions is a novel way of teaching rich surgical knowledge through the journey of a patient with a surgical condition from admission to discharge. This will be beneficial to both undergraduate and postgraduate students and will allow them to experience real life like interactions between patients and trainees as well as trainees and teachers. The filming of the video took place at the surgical skills training centre located at the Institute of Child Health building, Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. This medical video uses, in the main, actors and medically trained personnel. There are no violations with regard to ethics and such was cleared before and post the recording of the film. The Division would like to acknowledge the Foxwood TV, its producers, directors, and filming crew for their highly professional approach filming a medical training video. We would like to thank all the Divisional staff for their contributions to the preparation of manuscript, and performance in the video. We also would like to thank Karl Storz Endoscopy for their sponsorship of the episode.

Levashov, Vladimir K. The Political Culture of Russian Society (Sociological Analysis). Federal Center of Theoretical and Applied Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FCTAS RAS), 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19181/monogr.978-5-89697-347-8.2021.

Abstract:
The monograph presents the results of sociological research on the project “The political culture of the Russian society in the transition to a new technological structure and implementation Of the strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation and the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation from 07.05.2018 № 204 «On national goals and strategic objectives of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2024»”. The all-Russian survey was conducted in May-June 2019 in 22 regions of the Russian Federation. The study of the structure and nature of citizens’ opinions on national development goals and digital society shows that the Russian society has formed the initial elements of the fundamental components of an innovative political culture: knowledge, beliefs and attitudes for the actual behavior of citizens in terms of the introduction and use of information and communication technologies and the implementation of national projects. The problematic situation is identified and described in the monograph, according to the author, requires a thought-out and verified program of political actions, both on the part of the Government of the Russian Federation and on the part of civil society institutions in order to create a high cognitive, labor motivation in this strategically decisive area of life of the Russian society. The urgency, scale and complexity of the tasks require the unification of the efforts of civil society with a leading role and strategic coordination of state actions. The monograph summarizes the results of sociological research on topical issues on the agenda of Russian society and the state, and can be useful for management personnel of state and municipal administration, production organizers, managers of social and educational institutions, researchers, University teachers, graduate students and students.
