Lampi, Evans. "The Effectiveness of Using Virtual Laboratories to Teach Computer Networking Skills in Zambia." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/22013.

Full text
Abstract:
The effectiveness of using virtual labs to train students in computer networking skills, when real equipment is limited or unavailable, is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using virtual labs to train students in the acquisition of computer network configuration and troubleshooting skills. The study was conducted in the developing country of Zambia, where there is an acute shortage of network lab equipment. Effectiveness was determined by the transfer of skills learned in a virtual lab to a real lab. A two stage true experimental design, that compared the proficiency of randomly assigned experimental (virtual-lab) and control (no-virtual-lab) groups, was used to determine effectiveness (N = 56). In the first stage, the virtual-lab group practiced in a virtual lab while the no-virtual-lab group did not. Both groups were subjected to a lab test where the speed and accuracy of network configuration and troubleshooting of real equipment was measured, prior and after treatment. In the second stage, both groups practiced using real equipment and the speed and accuracy was again measured. An independent t-test was used to determine if there was a significant difference in the final performance between the two groups. It was found that there were significant differences between the groups in the configuration time (p = 0.011) and troubleshooting time (p = 0.03), favoring the virtual-lab group. On the other hand, there were no significant difference in configuration accuracy (p = 0.06) and troubleshooting accuracy (p = 0.440) between the two groups. In addition, there was positive transfer of training from the virtual lab to the real lab for configuration accuracy, configuration speed, troubleshooting accuracy and troubleshooting speed. There was also evidence that students showed performance gains both in using virtual and real labs by comparing their pre-test and post-test results. From the results, there is evidence that the use of virtual labs contributes positively to the transfer of practical computer networking skills from the virtual to the real lab environment. Hence, virtual labs were found to be effective in the teaching of computer networking skills relating to configuration and troubleshooting.

Woods, Bonnie. "The Effectiveness of a Structured Functiona Behavior Assessment Procedure: Teacher Training as a Moderator." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4793.

Full text
Abstract:
Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) is a collaborative, standardized process that was developed as a way to address identified barriers to completing effective functional behavior assessments (FBAs) in public schools. Current research literature documents the effectiveness of the PTR process in decreasing problematic behaviors and increasing social skills and academic engaged time for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. In addition, PTR demonstrates high acceptability by school personnel implementing the process. While PTR has demonstrated success in schools, questions still exist regarding variables that impact the effectiveness of this process. Therefore, the current study investigated the moderating effect of prior teacher training in managing challenging behavior on the effectiveness of the Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) process. Data regarding students' social skills, behavior problems, and academic engagement were analyzed through a series of mixed factorial analyses in order to determine the effectiveness of the PTR process. Results indicate that teachers' previous preparation in dealing with behavioral problems did not moderate the effectiveness of PTR, thus indicating that the process is equally beneficial to all teachers. However, time and the implementation of PTR were found to be significant in altering trends in student outcomes. Academic engaged time was found to be significantly altered more frequently than social skills or behavior problems. Implications of the findings for using the PTR process to address problematic student behavior in schools are discussed.

Abstract:
A sample of 22 registered nurses participated in an educational program to learn comprehensive physical assessment skills. This study investigated the effects of that program on their nursing practice. Administration of tests and questionnaires provided a measure of the: (a) use of physical assessment skills; (b) knowledge of physical assessment; (c) changes in nursing practice since learning the skills; (d) barriers to the use of the skills. The model used for the program's curriculum development was adult learning theory. The curriculum focused on this theory's key aspects. Namely, adult students build new skills on their past knowledge and already developed skills. Additionally, they must see the relevance of learning the skills and be able to apply them in their current life situation. The findings suggest this model was appropriate. The nurses in the study used the majority of learned skills after they completed the program. Their knowledge concerning these skills also showed dramatic improvement. The major findings regarding the increase in knowledge and use of physical assessment skills, positive changes in nursing practice and lack of barriers to the use of skills indicate that an educational program in physical assessment can be very beneficial to nurses. The results support those of previous studies in that nurses will use the physical assessment skills they have learned in continuing education programs. The implications for nursing practice and education were discussed. Suggestions were then made for future research in this area.

Abstract:
Cooper, Heron and Heward define maintenance as the extent to which a learner continues to perform a target behavior after the intervention has been terminated. Testing for maintenance allows the trainer to see if gains were sustained following the termination of a treatment program. In addition, once it is shown that a learner's skills have remained in the repertoire, assessment of generalization is possible. Previous literature in behavior skills training have assessed maintenance in a variety of settings for a variety of skills. Following maintenance assessments, booster sessions are commonly used to re-train skills that did not maintain at criterion levels. The current project assessed the maintenance of caregivers' skills following a training package used to teach three behavior management techniques (use reinforcement, pivot, protect-redirect) at a large, residential care facility. Procedures were developed to assess caregivers' maintenance of the three behavior management techniques using a pre-test- post-test design. If needed, skills were re-established using 5-20 minute booster sessions. The results showed that time between post-test and maintenance did not seem to have a strong effect on maintenance scores. In general, post-test scores were somewhat indicative of maintenance scores, and patterns were most apparent across tools.

"Evaluating the Effectiveness of Using Thiel Soft-Embalmed Donors to Teach the Female Pelvic Exam to Medical Students." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/asrf/2020/presentations/38.

Full text
Abstract:
At the Quillen College of Medicine, first year medical students are taught how to perform the female pelvic exam as part of the “Introduction to Physical Exam” course. Our previous research has found that students feel more confident and report a higher level of perceived transferability to live patients when learning the pelvic exam on soft-embalmed donors in comparison to low-fidelity mannequins. Our goal in this project was to incorporate soft-embalmed donors into the curriculum of first year medical students, making this teaching method available to all students, and objectively assess their skills as well as their retention. During the “Introduction to Physical Exam” course, high fidelity soft embalmed donors were available for students to practice the female pelvic exam with instruction from attending physicians. After learning exam techniques, all 67 students were given a survey to assess their confidence, perceived transferability, and preference for either soft embalmed donors or mannequins. They were also invited back the following week to assess their short term retention and ability to accurately perform the pelvic exam, with the option of using communication skills learned elsewhere in the ETSU curriculum. Thirteen students returned for this follow-up session and completed surveys to reassess their experience. We plan to follow this cohort of students throughout their medical school career to assess long term retention. All return participants felt they retained the pelvic exam knowledge learned the week prior, with 61.54% agreeing, and 38.46% strongly agreeing. Most felt prepared to now do a pelvic exam on a live patient (53.85% agreed, 38.46% strongly agreed). Students also reported that feedback on their communication and procedural skills was beneficial to the learning process. The use of high fidelity soft embalmed donors in medical education provides students with a realistic model to learn and become confident in performing pelvic exams. We have seen that this education model helps them retain their knowledge on pelvic exam technique. We look forward to following this cohort of students to see if this retention of knowledge persists into their third year of medical school.

Asher, Donna Brooks. "An Analysis of Student Perceptions of Teaching Effectiveness for Instructors Who Teach the Same Course in the Same Semester in Both Online and Face-to-Face Formats." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2019. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1609164/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is an increasingly number of students taking online classes in lieu of or in addition to the traditional face-to-face format. With this trend, there are questions that naturally come to the surface. The biggest question being "is teaching in the online arena just as effective as the face-to-face arena?" This dissertation aims to pursue that line of questioning by analyzing students' perceptions of the teaching effectiveness for instructors who teach the same course in both an online and face-to-face format in the same semester. The data are analyzed through the lens of the social capital theory. Social capital has never been applied to the classroom before as its focus has traditionally been on community development. However, social capital theory addresses interpersonal relationships and their impact on knowledge sharing behavior. This theory identifies three dimensions, which appear to have a parallel track with the student evaluation components; each is analyzed against each other. These dimensions include structured, cognitive and relational and are compared to the components of the student evaluation tool, which includes organization and explanation of materials, learning environment and self-regulated learning.

Saari, Bonnie. "The effectiveness of prevent-teach-reinforce: Does the presence of comorbid internalizing behavior problems moderate outcomes for children with externalizing behavior problems?" Scholar Commons, 2010. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1757.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the effectiveness of a school-based intervention process known as Prevent-Teach-Reinforce for children with a combination of externalizing and internalizing behaviors compared to children with only externalizing behaviors. The dependent variables examined were social skills, problem behaviors, and academic engaged time. Data for the current study were taken from archival data collected by the Florida Mental Health Institute that included students in kindergarten through 8th grade. A series of repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to identify differences in improvement on the dependent variables for the two groups of students. Research questions focused on the main effects as well as interaction effects between the type(s) of behavioral problems displayed (i.e., externalizing only, combination of externalizing and internalizing). Behavior problem classification was determined by calculating students' individual subscale scores on the Social Skills Rating Scale. The current study found support for the use of the Prevent-Teach-Reinforce intervention for children with varying behavioral profiles. Significant improvements were found in social skills, behavioral problems, and academic engaged time for students. Additionally, results of this study indicate that internalizing behaviors did not serve as a moderator to treatment effectiveness for students with externalizing behavior problems who received the PTR intervention. That is, improvements were similar for both groups, demonstrating that PTR is a process that can be used in an equally-effective way for both populations.

Muhembo, Gottfried Mbundu. "An analysis of how visualisation processes can be used by teachers participating in an intervention programme to teach for conceptual understanding of geometry." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/62439.

Full text
Abstract:
Visualisation in general and visualisation processes in particular have received much attention in the mathematics education research literature. Literature suggests that the appropriate use of visualisation helps learners to develop their conceptual understanding and skills of geometry as it allows them to visually interpret and understand fundamental mathematical and geometrical concepts. It is claimed that visual tools play an important role in communicating mathematical ideas through diagrams, gestures, images, sketches or drawings. Learning mathematics through visualisation can be a powerful tool to explore mathematical problems and give meaning to mathematical concepts and relationships between them. This interpretive case study focused on how selected teachers taught concepts in geometry through visualisation processes for conceptual understanding as a result of an intervention programme. The study was conducted at four high schools by four mathematics teachers in the Kavango East Region in Northern Namibia. The participants were involved in a three-week intervention programme and afterwards taught three lessons each on the topic of geometry. The data collection method of this research was: focus group and stimulus recall interviews, classroom observations and recorded videos. This research is located in constructivism. I used vertical and horizontal analysis strategies to analyse the data. My analytical instrument consisted of an observation schedule which I used in each lesson to identify how each of the visualisation processes was evident in each of the observed lessons. This study revealed that the participant teachers used visualisation processes in most of their lessons and these processes were used accurately in line with the requirements of the grade 8 mathematics syllabi. The visualisation processes were used through designed visual materials, posters and through the use of geometrical objects such as chalkboard ruler, protractor and compass. The results from this study also confirmed that visualisation processes can be a powerful instructional tool for enhancing learners’ conceptual understanding of geometry.

Abstract:
There are a number of different safety threats that children face in their lives. One infrequent, but highly dangerous situation a child can face is finding a firearm. Hundreds of children are injured or killed by firearms each year. Fortunately, behavioral skills training (BST) and in situ training (IST) are effective approaches for teaching a number of different skills, including safety skills. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a teaching package for preschool teachers to learn to conduct BST to teach safety skills. A multiple baseline across subjects design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of this teaching package implemented by the teacher with seven preschoolers. Five children demonstrated the skills following in situ training and additional reinforcement or time out. Two children did not complete the study.

Full text
Abstract:
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is an augmentative and alternative communication program (Frost & Bondy, 2002). Although PECS has been effectively used to teach functional requesting skills for children with autism, mental retardation, visual impairment, and physical disabilities (e.g., Anderson, Moore, & Bourne, 2007; Chambers & Rehfeldt, 2003), there are limited studies examining the effectiveness of PECS to teach requesting skills for children with multiple disabilities including visual impairment (Lund & Troha, 2008).This study explored the effectiveness of combining tangible symbols and other adaptations with PECS to teach requesting skills to students with multiple disabilities. Specifically, the participants were four students with multiple disabilities including visual impairment who also had many challenges in communication skills. The research design was the multiple probe design across subjects, a variation of a multiple baseline design. A notable benefit to this design is that there was no need to collect continuous recordings of baseline measures, because a strong a priori assumption of stability and the possibility of causing strong participant reactions existed before introducing the intervention. Instead, the researcher made periodic recordings of baseline levels to insure no significant changes have occurred before introducing the intervention. The study included four parts: (a) the assessment of reinforcers, (b) baseline, (c) the implementation of the intervention, which was teaching the three PECS phases and conducting generalization sessions, and (d) the maintenance condition. Three important research questions were posed:1. Can students with multiple disabilities including visual impairment learn to make requests for preferred items using adapted PECS materials and procedures?2. Can students with multiple disabilities including visual impairment generalize requesting skills for preferred items using adapted PECS from training rooms to classrooms?3. Can students with multiple disabilities including visual impairment maintain requesting skills after training? The results indicated that all four participants learned requesting skills using adapted PECS, generalized the newly acquired skills to their classrooms, and maintained the requesting skills after training. Results of this study provided preliminary evidence that PECS with adaptations could be used effectively to teach requesting skills for students with multiple disabilities including visual impairment.

Abstract:
This study examined the practice and relevance of having a team of two teachers, one Deaf and one hearing, team teaching Deaf students in a coenrolled classroom. Data were collected to answer the research questions by interviewing five teachers and their supervisor. Six successful teams were asked about their experience team teaching, and their perception of the effectiveness of this approach. Informants' responses were videotaped, transcribed and analysed. From interview data, four main categories were identified: (a) Philosophy of Education, (b) perception of roles, (c) benefits of team teaching, and (c) current practice. Data for each category is presented separately including subcategories, and illustrated with quotes from informants. Results of this research encourages professionals to work towards collaborative models that positively impact Deaf students' education. There is sufficient evidence to realise that there is an imperative need for Deaf adults to be involved in the educational process of children and young adults who are Deaf.

Abstract:
Citizen science projects present a distinctive opportunity for professional and volunteer scientists to coordinate their efforts to gather unique sets of data that can benefit the scientific and local communities. These projects are assumed to be an effective educational tool to teach nature of science (NOS) to participants (Brossard, Lewenstein, Bonney, 2005). This case study evaluates the effectiveness of participation in a citizen science project as a way to learn about NOS. Through enhancement of the Tryon Creek Owl Monitoring Project the researcher reviewed the characteristics of a citizen science project that were thought to be necessary to impact the volunteers' knowledge of NOS. The study also explored the benefits and limitations to organizing the citizen science protect using the principles of action research. Analysis of participants' knowledge and the effectiveness of active research theory, was evaluated through pre- and post- questionnaires and interviews. Although volunteers were able to explore the core themes of NOS through actively engaging in the scientific process, they did not experience a statistically significant change in their demonstration of understanding. For a multitude of reasons, participants had a positive experience with the presence of an embedded researcher within the project. This case study supports the use of active research as a guide to ensure that within each project the needs of both the scientific community and the volunteer scientists are met.

Abstract:
Magister Educationis - MEd
Since the inception of the University in 1960 under the Apartheid regime and up until a few years ago Afrikaans had dominated both as educational and as communication medium. However, political change - at the University and in South Africa - has brought about a change in language patterns. According to the HSRC Work Committee on Languages and Language Instruction (1981), a high percentage (40%) of Afrikaans-speaking people classified as coloured and living in the Cape Peninsula choose English as the medium of instruction and also regard it as the most important language to be learnt at schools (also 40%). As a result of this, and the enrolment of a large percentage of Xhosa speaking students, who generally prefer English to Afrikaans as an educational medium, English has become the language most commonly used both inside and outside the classroom. The homogeneity of preference has, however, not been matched by mastery of the language. For approximately 70% of all first-year students English is a second or even a third language. Though University entry is based on at least ten years of the study of English, standards of proficiency differ quite considerably as a result of inequalities in education. Because students need to improve their level of English proficiency I investigated the effectiveness of using senior students as tutor assistants in an academic development programme, the English Special Project, at UWC. This study aims at revealing that the tutor assistantships in the English Special Project can alleviate problems that occur with annual increases in student numbers under certain conditions. These are that: 1 prospective tutor assistants undergo proper tutor assistant training; 2 tutor assistants are committed to the course of academic development; 3 tutor assistants have the time available that is necessary for the task. In Chapter 1 give an insight into what this study is about, the reasons for conducting it and what my personal involvement with the ESP has been. In Chapter 2 I review some of the overseas and local literature on TA systems. In Chapter 3 I describe a case-study to evaluate the success of the TA system in the ESP with reference to academic development. I emphasize the intensive, individual care of and attention to first-year students. In an attempt to address the problem, the effectiveness of senior students as tutor assistants to assist in tutorial sessions is described. In Chapter 4 I discuss the value of TA intervention in the ESP at personal and social levels. Chapter 5 contains the general conclusions and my recommendations to improve the ESP.

Abstract:
Human capital assessment is an integral part of the in-depth evaluation conducted by Venture Capitalists (VCs) before an investment decision. Furthermore, an effective collaboration between external investors and the founding team can be vital for the success of a startup venture. This thesis aims to improve this assessment and collaboration by providing an empirical account of historically successful Swedish tech startups and their founding teams (FT). We employ semi-structured interviews with 13 entrepreneurs who in total have founded over 50 ventures in order to deduce patterns to the characteristics, compositions and views of successful founding management teams. We compile and discuss their views concerning aspects such as organizational culture, team performance and their relationships with external financiers. The focus of this thesis was in part guided by our commissioner, Almi Invest. Based on our interviews and literature review, we present several findings which may be of interest to both investors and entrepreneurs. Some of our key findings are that successful Swedish tech startups are generally composed of diverse teams where the founders share some previous association and complement each other with regards to both competencies and personalities. They view culture and vision as important aspects, with values acting as the uniting factor that drives cohesion and performance. We also find that their views are largely influenced by previous experiences. Finally, we highlight some perceived inefficiencies in the collaboration between investors and entrepreneurs, mainly with regards to post-investment activities and the process of raising capital. Our findings suggest a lack of transparency between entrepreneurs and financiers regarding the investor activity levels, where entrepreneurs generally feel that VCs fall short on their promises. We suggest some areas of improvement where VCs might tune their practices to better suit the needs of their portfolio companies and improve overall performance.

Klimek, Connie Marie. "The effectiveness of visualization as a strategy to teach intramuscular injection administration to nursing students." Thesis, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/3630.

Full text
Abstract:
Visualization is a technique researched extensively in a variety of disciplines for its effects on psychomotor skill learning. Although the results of such studies support the use of visualization as a teaching strategy, the effectiveness of using visualization in psychomotor skill learning in nursing education has rarely been investigated. Of the few nursing studies that have been done, the results were inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of visualization as a strategy to teach second year undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students how to administer a medication by intramuscular (I.M.) injection. The use of visualization with video demonstration and physical practice was compared to using only video demonstration and physical practice to teach this group of students I.M. injection administration. Stallings'(1982) Information Processing Model was used to conceptualize visualization in relation to psychomotor skill learning. An experimental, post test only design was used to test the effectiveness of using visualization as a teaching strategy. Data were gathered from a convenience sample of 37 nursing students learning to administer I.M. injections for the first time. Two instruments were used in the data collection procedure. First, prior to learning I.M. injection administration in a scheduled laboratory, students were rated on their ability to produce mental images using The Betts' Questionnaire Upon Mental Imagery (QMI) Vividness of Imagery Scale (Sheehan, 1967). The scores from this test were used to rate participants as having either a high or low imaging ability. High and low imagers were equally divided between the treatment and control groups. At the end of the injections laboratory, all study participants had one of their I.M. injections video-taped. Upon completion of the injections laboratory sessions, the investigator viewed the video tapes and rated each participant's performance using The I.M. Injection Performance Appraisal (Klimek, 1994). The data were analyzed by using the univariate factorial (2X2) analysis of variance (ANOVA). Analysis of the data revealed no significant effect of the visualization treatment on participants' performance scores. However, several methodological and conceptual problems within the study's design and in the utilization of Stallings' conceptual framework could be responsible for the lack of significant findings. The implications of the findings for nursing education, practice, and administration were discussed.

Sephoto, Sibongile Annah Khethiwe. "Exploring the effectiveness of the teaching strategies that technology teachers apply to teach the design process." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/2324.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.Ed.) -- University of Limpopo, 2018
Technology education was introduced in the South African curriculum by the Department of Basic Education with the intention of developing learners’ design skills while using the design process. Since the introduction of technology education, the South African curriculum has undergone a series of curriculum changes. Teachers were introduced to Outcomes-Based Education (OBE), the Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS), the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) and now the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). These changes compelled South African teachers to shift from a teacher-centred approach to that of a learner-centred approach. In the RNCS, the design process was presented as a linear process, whereas in the CAPS document, the design process has been represented as non-linear. This change has led to uncertainties amongst technology teachers on how to teach the design process. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of the teaching strategies that technology teachers apply when teaching the design process. The CAPS document for technology stipulates that technology should give learners an opportunity to develop and apply specific design skills to solve technological problems in real situations. To solve such problems, learners should be exposed to a problem and then engage in a systematic process that allows them to develop solutions to the problem. The theoretical framework used in this study was based on social constructivism. This theory was used based on the fact that it describes how learning occurs and puts emphasis on how learners construct their own understanding in a social context. This social constructivism was linked to the design process skills required to demonstrate the way in which the teaching and learning of the design process could be directed. The design process is seen as the backbone of technology and should be used to teach technology, it seems that teachers are struggling to use the design process in teaching technology. The literature revealed that teachers’ lack of knowledge in technology has an effect on how they use various teaching strategies to teach the design process. This is challenging and a reason for unease, therefore this study needed to explore this problem. The study engaged in qualitative research using a case study design. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants, who comprised technology teachers who obtained anAdvanced Certificate in Education majoring in technology with at least six years of experience in teaching technology. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and observations, and were analysed using Shulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge. The study revealed that only in exceptional cases were technology teachers using problem-solving to teach the design process. It was also revealed that technology teachers have difficulties with regard to PCK. The sampled teachers were also unable to support learners to acquire design skills such as investigation, designing, making, evaluation and communication. The observations indicated that the participants did not engage with the design process as set out in the CAPS document for technology. The implication of this study is that understanding the content and how to teach it is essential in teaching and learning situations. There should be ongoing professional development programmes to assist technology teachers. This study recommends that there should be repeated in-service training of technology teachers to address the issue of concern in teaching the design process. Teachers should be encouraged to attend such in-service training. The in-service training should also focus on teaching technology using the design process. Furthermore, technology teachers should encourage effective group-work in problem solving so that every member of the group has a role to play.

Abstract One of the most common dialogues is the one-on-one dialogue design, in which a teacher agent and a student engage in dialogues and learning. This study attempts to include a student agent, design a dual-agent interactive tutor system, and to enrich the content of the dialogue. Researchers hope to gradually guide students to participate in learning through dialogue, so that technology can be integrated into the curriculum and thereby enhancing learning effectiveness. In this study, the teaching system called “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” developed and set up by Professor Kuo, Bor-Chen and his team of the National Institute of Education Information and Testing Statistics at the National Taichung University of Education. Utilizing the Pythagorean Theorem as an example, the outline of the syllabus and types of mistakes are analyzed to develop the dialogue and teaching of this “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” according to Van Hiele’s geometric concepts and learning theory for junior high school students. Through this system, students can effectively understand the Pythagorean Theory and its application. The “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” includes domain model, student model, teaching model, and interface model. The extension of the five concepts of knowledge associated with the Pythagorean Theorem in the domain model is defined by domain-experts. In the student model, through the reaction of students’ responses to the reorganization of the incorrect type of questions and the analysis of misconception, the feedback mechanism to be given by the students in learning the Pythagorean Theorem is constructed. In the teaching model, the outer loop and inner loop respectively guide the teaching process. The outer loop takes the five concepts of knowledge as the order of teaching. The inner loop takes each concept of knowledge and extends it into one-on-two dialogs guiding students to learn step by step. In the interface model, the integration of a graphical user interface, a dialogue to guide students to learn step by step through their responses give encouragement or prompt feedback. The purpose of this study is to understand the learning effectiveness of the “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” applied to remedial teaching of the Pythgorean Theorem and to conduct a teaching experiment with the nonequivalent pretest-posttest design quasi-experimental research method. The study found that using the “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” applied to remedial teaching of the Pythagorean Theorem can effectively improve the learning outcomes of students. The effectiveness of remedial teaching using the “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” was significantly better than that of traditional class teaching. Students and teachers both positively affirm that the “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” can enhance learning effectiveness and allow students to learn adaptively.

Obesity is one of the important issues in public health, as it is a major cause for people's health in its association with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome not only increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, but also increases mortality. High technology industry is capital-intensive, highly competitive, high demanding of innovative developments, and high knowledge and labor intensity. In such a particular working environment, employees are prone to developing obesity and symptoms of metabolic syndrome under insufficient exercise opportunity. In this study, a health promotion program was implemented among overweight employees in the high-tech industry in Taiwan. The effectiveness of such interventions on the anthropometrical changes was examined. A total of 177 overweight employees with BMI ≧ 23Kg/m2 was voluntarily recruited in the health promotion program. Among them, 128 participants were classified into exercise group (1 to 3-month intervention of purely exercise) while 49 participants were categorized into education with exercise group (3-month intervention of both exercise and health education programs and nutrition counseling). In addition to anthropometrics, the participant’s health knowledge, attitudes, and behavior changes were also evaluated. The results have shown that 76.7% of the overweight subjects were defined as obesity (BMI≧27 kg/m2 ). Males were found to have 83.9% (waist>90cm) central obesity condition and 68.3% females (waist>80cm) were counted as the same condition, amongst 35% had already developed metabolic syndrome. General improvements were observed in health knowledge, attitude, and eating behavior, however only eating behavior was statistically significant. Among body measures, weight, BMI, and waist circumference were decreased significantly after intervention. More improvements were found in the education with exercise group as opposed to the exercise group. In terms of the physiological indicators, higher HDL and lowered diastolic blood pressure, LDL, preprandial blood sugar level, and triglyceride were observed after intervention. Diastolic blood pressure and HDL were founs as the most significant indicators as changes by intervantions particularly in the education with exercise group. Waist circumference reduction had more significant effect on changes of physiological indicators while comparing with weight loss. This study found that interventions by exercise and health education combination could greatly improve body size and metabolic syndrome-related physiological indicators. As a result, health awareness and continuous activities in health promotion are suggested for workplace health practitioners.

The shift from a product-based to a knowledge-based economy has resulted in an increasing demand for organizations to implement knowledge management systems (KMS) at an accelerating pace. However, factors influencing the employee satisfaction with KMS, i.e. one surrogate measure of information system (IS) success/effectiveness, have seldom empirically examined by prior researches, particularly how knowledge map and personalization influencing employee satisfaction with KMS. Results from a sample of 133 employees mostly from four international high-tech manufacturing companies in the Hsin-Chu Science-based Industrial Parks in Taiwan strongly support a more comprehensive understanding in explaining employee satisfaction with KMS. The result shows KMS with a higher level of knowledge map and personalization will satisfy employees through increasing perceptions of ease of use and usefulness with KMS. Our findings could be possibly applied for investigating the related issues regarding the successful implementation of KMS for researchers and practitioners. Based on these findings, we propose some managerial implications for practitioners to improve KMS effectiveness through reinforcing the knowledge map and personalization functions of KMS.

The high employment-rotating rate in high-tech industry recently has made the need for skillful manpower becoming urgent. The operating environment of high-tech industry has switched from business competition to intelligence competition. Therefore, the importance of education and training for high-tech personnel could not be stressed enough and it has the entire industry concerned. It is learned from the study that high-tech industry has already possessed thorough education and training measures with plan in place. Moreover, the concept of “manpower is the main source of industry” is well accepted in the industry. In terms of education and training effect, trainee’s opinions on and satisfaction with the course, teaching material, instructor, and site are evaluated. In general, high-tech industry has failed to evaluate the improvement of trainee in knowledge and technique or the effect of trainee’s applying education and training at work. Therefore, case study is used in this research to understand the satisfaction of trainee, the effect of education and training program, and the application of education and training received. It is also the idea to understand how departmental director view the effect of education and training given. The purpose of the study is to: 1. Analyze the impact of personnel from different department on the effect of education and training. 3. Study the correlation of “satisfaction with education and training” and “personal improvement,” with “job performance.” 4. Analyze the viewpoint of each departmental director on the effect of education and training. 5. Study the correlation of employee’s education and training with integrated job performance. 6. Give meaningful suggestions on the education and training of the industry through analysis for future reference. A case study is made to be the matrix of the research. A survey is performed on the directors and employees of a company. The questionnaires distributed and collected are analyzed statistically to find out the common factor through Factory Analysis, also, to analyze the difference among variables through One Way Analysis of Variance and Post Hoc Duncan’s Multiple-Range Comparison. The correlation of “training satisfaction” and “training effect” with “training application” in the questionnaires is established through Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation Analysis. The correlation of integrated training effects in the questionnaires designed for directors is studied as well. Conclusions of the study are reached as the follows: 1. Personality does affect the effect of education and training. 2. The combination of training courses and job responsibility of employee does affect the effect of education and training. 3. There is a positive correlation among “satisfaction with education and training,” “personal improvement,” and “job performance.” 4. Employee’s education and training has indeed improved organizational productivity and profitability. 5. Employee’s education and training does have a positive and substantial effect. 6. There is still room for improvement for the education and training of employees. Substantiate suggestions for employee’s education and training that are based on the study result are made available to individual organization and entire industry for future reference.

Taiwan is encountering the situation of re-positioning due to globalization and the emergence of China. The economic development and core values of Taiwan shifted to technology with accumulated knowledge for further development and innovation, after traditional labor-intensive industry moved to Western Taiwan. Technology lies at the core of the intellectual economy and the human resources of the industry shall become the developmental basis of the competition between Taiwan and the world. The leaders in the technology industry will enhance the effectiveness of the research & development (“R&D”) talents in a proactive manner as Taiwan is deeply engaged in R&D and innovation. The principal communication targets of R&D staff are machines and equipment and hence the characters of the R&D staff are distinct from that of other staff with different types of work. The R&D staff receives more work stress due to the limited time period and the presence of a bottleneck in technology. Therefore, this research mainly discusses if transactional leadership, with reciprocal and definite short-term objectives, influences the organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behavior in relation to effectiveness, and investigates if work stress influences the relationship between transactional leadership and the effectiveness of the staff. Convenience sampling was employed for this research and the R&D staff from the technology sector has been selected as the targets. A total of 570 questionnaires were distributed, of which 167 valid questionnaires were returned. The return rate of valid questionnaires was 29.3%. The research results obtained from empirical analysis are set out below:- 1.The R&D staff will demonstrate continued commitment, but a relatively low level of commitment when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 2.The R&D staff will demonstrate organizational identity, and a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 3.The R&D staff will provide assistance to the colleagues, which is a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 4.The R&D staff will avoid disturbance and the pursuit of benefits, which is a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 5.The R&D staff will demonstrate the separation of business from private affairs, which is a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 6.The R&D staff will demonstrate self-actualization, which is a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 7.Work stress will strengthen the negative impacts of transactional leadership which is informed to the staff and the organizational citizenship behavior. The above-mentioned results review that long-term and enthusiastic commitment to the organization from R&D staff was more unlikely to be acquired with transactional leadership. However, transactional leadership, which defines clear objectives and provides satisfaction to R&D staff upon the accomplishment of the objectives, allows the R&D staff to provide immediate positive feedback via organizational citizenship behavior. Nonetheless, negative impacts will be produced with increased work stress. Hence, the leadership style of the leaders must be amended in accordance with various people and situations and must adapt to moderate adjustments or transform the work stress to enhance the effectiveness of the staff.

Knowledge management on the basis of contemporary organizational theory has its important research orientations for the business sector as well as the management academic sector. It is the same as competitive superiority in the business. Sveiby considers that one of the contemporary brand new academic viewpoints is to have an organization operate by a method of better-structured knowledge management. It can be seen as a result from the awareness of the importance of knowledge management by contemporary organizations, gathering strength in the promotion of knowledge management movement. The viewpoints of “knowledge worker,” so-called by Drucker, and “expert labor,” so-called by Hull, both point to the importance of knowledge management and suggest that how to attain knowledge management effectiveness in an organization be further discussed. Thus, Van Krough, Ichijo & Nonaka explore how members in an organization can effectively accomplish the purpose of knowledge management in the process of its promotion of knowledge management. In other words, the consistence of an organization in knowledge management procedures and effectiveness comes as the most crucial factor for success. However, so far only scholars Sveiby and Becerra-Fernandez & Sabherwal have developed inventories and few researches have shown clear procedures or methods to explain how an organization can use a set of deliberate and accurate standards to measure its effectiveness after it has effectively enforced those knowledge management activities. In light of the aforementioned, this study was intended to explore high-tech businesses in our country from the viewpoint of knowledge worker with in-depth interviews and empirical surveys to develop a model for the measurement of knowledge management effectiveness for high-tech businesses in our country. Initially, this study came up with presuppositions from literature review and research propositions on Taiwan’s high-tech business management through in-depth interviews. In a further step it constructed business knowledge management activities and effectiveness by the method of expert consultation to develop an inventory. After investigations, empirical analysis, research presuppositions and propositions were compared. In empirical research, knowledge workers such as knowledge managers, knowledge engineers and knowledge performers in relevant departments of knowledge management in Taiwan’s high-tech businesses have been treated as subjects. With the assistance of the founders and gardeners of “Hsinchu Science Hope Park” and “Tainan Science Hope Park”, the researchers confirmed the identities of the subjects. A total of 300 copies of questionnaire have been sent out with 222 valid copies returned. The study found that business knowledge management activities and effectiveness vary from knowledge workers with different personal background and organizational structures. It also came to a further conclusion that organizational knowledge management activities have impacts to certain extend on knowledge management effectiveness. Though research propositions indicate that knowledge management effectiveness may feed back and affect its activities, it needs to be further verified through follow-up empirical researches. Therefore, this study is expected to construct and verify a model of indicators for the measurement of knowledge management activities and effectiveness as a reference for the academic circle and the business sector.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current implementation of training and development in Hsin-Chu Science-Based Industrial Park, to evaluate the reaction level of training results, and to assess training needs in the future. Moreover, the suggestions regarding some critical training issues were provided for corporations in Hsin-Chu Science-Based Industrial Park. The framework of this study includes training needs assessment, competence assessment which was adopted from McGehee & Thayer’s study (1961), and training evaluation which was adopted from Kirkpatrick’s study (1994). Literature reviews, qualitative research method, and questionnaire survey were employed in this study. Naturalistic inquiry was conducted to analyze qualitative data. The descriptive statistics, MANOVA, paired-sample T test, and non-parameter tests were used to analyze the quantitative data. According to the conclusion, it was found that over half of the corporations in Hsin-Chu Science-Based Industrial Park have comprehensive resource for employees’ training and development. During the planning phase of training, task analysis, organization analysis, individual analysis, and competence analysis need to be conducted. After implementing the training programs, the training results need to be evaluated. The results of this study also show that in-site lecturers and apprenticeship training programs are widely used in the high-tech companies. “Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development” (OECD) released a “Knowledge-Based Economy Report” in 1996, stating that knowledge-based economy would change the style of economic development around the world; knowledge has become the major impetus of productivity and economic growth. Since high-tech industries are becoming highly specialized in their division of labor, product life is rapidly decreasing (Fine, 2000). For sustainable survival and development, enterprises must manage and apply their core knowledge effectively, and launch new products or develop new ideas continually. At the same time, they need to cultivate a suitable type of business culture and character, so that the results of innovation become the central corporate competitive edge (Stewart, 1997). This is the pressing topic that Taiwanese high-tech firms are facing today. Therefore, this study constructed an objective, precise and reliable『Knowledge Management Performance Scale for Taiwanese High-tech firms』(Research I) through literature review and consultation with experts, and combining qualitative and quantitative methods (Fuzzy Delphi Method, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) Method). In addition, the self-developed Knowledge Management Effectiveness Scale for Taiwanese High-tech Firms was integrated with scales of other variables such as organizational innovation, business culture and business core competence (Research II). And the questionnaire was administered to Taiwanese high-tech firms; 900 questionnaires were sent out by a stratified sampling method, and 170 valid responses were received. The valid response rate was 18.89%. Then canonical correlation analysis, regression analysis and Linear Structure Relation (LISREL) were used to validate the hypotheses of this study and their relevance to the theoretical model. According to the result of analysis, it is found that the theoretical model used in this study is highly relevant, and knowledge management effectiveness has significant positive impact on organizational innovation, business culture and business core competence; organizational innovation also has significant positive impact on business culture and business core competence; and similarly, business culture has significant positive impact on business core competence. Moreover, knowledge management effectiveness may exert indirect effect on business core competence via organizational innovation and busuness culture; and organizational innovation has indirect effect on business core competence via business culture. Finally, in-depth discussion is made on the conclusion and practical implications of this study, and specific contributions of the study are presented. Recommendations are made on management practices and the direction for future research, and provided as references to the industry and academia.
