ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Interest in TCP/IP as a communication protocol for use in space communication has increased substantially with the growth of the world wide web (WWW). TCP/IP is a relevant communication protocol for space based communication systems that need to access the broader terrestrial communication network. Low Earth Orbit(LEO) satellites have very short delay times between themselves and the ground, and correspondingly very short connection times. Staying in contact with a LEO satellite continuously through a space-based network requires large constellations of satellites and complex routing strategies. Connectivity with the world wide web using a widely accepted protocol such as TCP/IP is desirable because it would make communication with the satellite over a terrestrial station possible, were it to route communication onto the WWW. This thesis looks at the expected TCP/IP performance over satellite network links, identifies problem areas for current TCP/IP technologies, and makes suggestions for optimizing TCP/IP over such links. The thesis also introduces a new performance benchmark, the equivalence level, allowing for the simplified description of TCP throughput behaviour over a broad range of network parameters. The performance of the Linux kernel release 2.4.18 TCP/IP stack is also evaluated.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die belangstelling in TCP/IP as ’n kommunikasie protokol vir gebruik in die ruimte het kenmerklik toegeneem met die groei van die wereld wye web (WWW). TCP/IP is ’n relevante protokol vir kommunikasie stelsels in die ruimte, veral met die doel om toegang tot land gebaseerde kommunikasie netwerke te kry. Lae wentelbaan sateliete het baie kort vertragingstye tussen die aarde en die sateliet, en gevolglik baie kort verbindingstye. Groot sateliet konstelasies en komplekse verbintenis strategie word benodig om ’n lae wentelbaan sateliet deurentyd in kontak te hou met ’n ruimtegebaseerde netwerk. Verbinding met die wereld wye web deur die gebruik van ’n wyd aanvaarde protokol, soos TCP/IP, is wenslik, want dit sal kommunikasie met die sateliet oor ’n aardgebaseerde stasie moontlik maak, sou dit kommunikasie oor die wereld wye web stuur. Hierdie tesis kyk na die verwagte werking van TCP/IP oor sateliet netwerk konneksies, identifiseer probleme met huidiglike TCP/IP tegnologie, en maak voorstellings vir die optimale funtionering van TCP/IP oor sulke konneksies. Hierdie tesis stel ook ’n nuwe werkverrigtings maatstaf, die gelykheidsvlak, wat die vereenvoudige beskrywing van TCP/IP data tempo gedrag oor ’n groot variasie van netwerk parameters toelaat. Abstract:
The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has been designed for reliable data transport over the Internet. The performance of TCP is strongly influenced by its congestion control algorithms that limit the amount of traffic a sender can transmit based on end-to-end available capacity estimations. These algorithms proved successful in environments where applications rate requirements can be easily anticipated, as is the case for traditional bulk data transfer or interactive applications. However, an important new class of Internet applications has emerged that exhibit significant variations of transmission rate over time. Variable-rate traffic poses a new challenge for congestion control, especially for applications that need to share the limited capacity of a bottleneck over a long delay Internet path (e.g., paths that include satellite links). This thesis first analyses TCP performance of bursty applications that do not send data continuously, but generate data in bursts separated by periods in which little or no data is sent. Simulation analysis shows that standard TCP methods do not provide efficient support for bursty applications that produce variable-rate traffic, especially over long delay paths. Although alternative forms of congestion control like TCP-Friendly Rate Control and the Datagram Congestion Control Protocol have been proposed, they did not achieve widespread deployment. Therefore many current applications that rely upon User Datagram Protocol are not congestion controlled. The use of non-standard or proprietary methods decreases the effectiveness of Internet congestion control and poses a threat to the Internet stability. Solutions are therefore needed to allow bursty applications to use TCP. Chapter three evaluates Congestion Window Validation (CWV), an IETF experimental specification that was proposed to improve support for bursty applications over TCP. It concluded that CWV is too conservative to support many bursty applications and does not provide an incentive to encourage use by application designers. Instead, application designers often avoid generating variable-rate traffic by padding idle periods, which has been shown to waste network resources. CWV is therefore shown to not provide an acceptable solution for variable-rate traffic. In response to this shortfall, a new modification to TCP, TCP-JAGO, is proposed. This allows variable-rate traffic to restart quickly after an inactive (i.e., idle) period and to effectively utilise available network resources while sending at a lower rate than the available rate (i.e., during an application-limited period). The analysis in Chapter five shows that JAGO provides faster convergence to a steady-state rate and improves throughput by more efficiently utilising the network. TCP-JAGO is also shown to provide an appropriate response when congestion is experienced after restart. Variable-rate TCP traffic can also be impacted by the Initial Window algorithm at the start or during the restart of a session. Chapter six considers this problem, where TCP has no prior indication of the network state. A recent proposal for a larger initial window is analysed. Issues and advantages of using a large IW over a range of scenarios are discussed. The thesis concludes by presenting recommendations to improve TCP support for bursty applications. This also provides an incentive for application designers to choose TCP for variable-rate traffic.

Bandwidth management is a topic which is often discussed, but on which relatively little work has been done with regard to compiling a comprehensive set of techniques and methods for managing traffic on a network. What work has been done has concentrated on higher end networks, rather than the low bandwidth links which are commonly available in South Africa and other areas outside the United States. With more organisations increasingly making use of the Internet on a daily basis, the demand for bandwidth is outstripping the ability of providers to upgrade their infrastructure. This resource is therefore in need of management. In addition, for Internet access to become economically viable for widespread use by schools, NGOs and other academic institutions, the associated costs need to be controlled. Bandwidth management not only impacts on direct cost control, but encompasses the process of engineering a network and network resources in order to ensure the provision of as optimal a service as possible. Included in this is the provision of user education. Software has been developed for the implementation of traffic quotas, dynamic firewalling and visualisation. The research investigates various methods for monitoring and management of IP traffic with particular applicability to low bandwidth links. Several forms of visualisation for the analysis of historical and near-realtime traffic data are also discussed, including the use of three-dimensional landscapes. A number of bandwidth management practices are proposed, and the advantages of their combination, and complementary use are highlighted. By implementing these suggested policies, a holistic approach can be taken to the issue of bandwidth management on Internet links.

Resumo: Este trabalho está baseado em uma experiência real, vivida no dia-a-dia do nosso trabalho na Empresa Brasileira de Telecomunicações S.A, EMBRATEL, quando da busca de ferramentas capazes de viabilizar o permanente treinamento dos Consultores Técnicos da empresa, localizados em diferentes partes do nosso país, em face da escassez de recursos financeiros e de tempo. Para tanto, iniciamos com uma retrospectiva histórica da Educação a Distância no mundo, seu presente e suas tendências visíveis. Depois, apresentamos uma descrição dos protocolos multicasting existentes, seguido de nossa proposta. Apresentamos, também, uma simulação usando o Simulador ns-2 de maneira a comprovar o correto funcionamento do protocolo proposto e avaliar seu desempenho. O núcleo desta tese é a proposta de um novo protocolo multicasting, elemento essencial para a otimização da rede de suporte, um imperativo para a eficiência de seu funcionamento e, principalmente, da diminuição de seu custo, tendo em vista a situação ideal de se transmitir voz e vídeo para garantir que uma aula a distância será o mais próximo possível de uma aula presencial, conforme aponta o resultado de pesquisas referenciadas no presente texto, uma vez que vídeo é uma aplicação que demanda grande largura de banda
Abstract: This work is based on a real life situation, experienced in our daily work at Empresa Brasileira de Telecomunicações S.A, EMBRATEL, when pursuing tools that would allow the continuous training of its staff of Technical Consultants. The Technical Consultants were spread all over Brasil, a country of continental dimensions. Time and cost were obstac1es to achieve the above mentioned training. This thesis starts providing a short account of the historical milestones on Distance Learning. We added considerations on the state-of-the-art and scenarios of future developments, which were drawn taking into account social and economical policies. Routing and existing multicasting protocols are described and compared with the bidirectional multicast protocol proposed in this thesis. The main purpose of this thesis is the proposal of a new Multicasting Protocol, to support a new concept on which a teacher can be a student on a different subject by taking into account that we aim a Distance Learning environment inside a corporation. The ns-2 Simulator is used to simulate the perfect operation of the proposed protocol and evaluate its performance. The use of video is mandatory in order to achieve a maximum efficiency at c1ass. The rapid switching of video transmission from the teacher to a remote student that asks a question (so that all other students spread around the country can also see who is asking) and back to the teacher is mandatory and is what motivated the development of this new Multicast Protocol

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The majority of tra c on the Internet uses the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) as a transport layer protocol for the end-to-end control of information transfer. Measurement, simulation and analytical models are the techniques and tools that can be used to understand and investigate the Internet and its performance. Measurements can only be used to explore existing network scenario or otherwise become costly and in exible with the growth and complexity of the Internet. Simulation models do not scale with the growth of network capacities and the number of users. Computationally e cient analytical models are therefore important tools for investigating, designing, dimensioning and planning IP (Internet Protocol) networks. Existing analytical models of TCP performance are either too simple to capture the internal dynamics of TCP or are too complex to be used to analyze realistic network topologies with several bottleneck links. The literature shows that the xed point algorithm (FPA) is a very useful way of solving analytical models of Internet performance. This thesis presents fast and accurate analytical models of TCP performance with the FPA used to solve them. Apart from what is observed in experimental literature, no comprehensive proof of the convergence and uniqueness of the FPA is given. In this thesis we show how the FPA of analytical models of reliable Internet protocols such as TCP converges to a unique xed point. The thesis speci es the conditions necessary in order to use the FPA for solving analytical models of reliable Internet protocols. We also develop a general implementation algorithm of the FPA of analytical models of TCP performance for realistic and arbitrary network topologies involving heterogenous TCP connections crossing many bottleneck links. The models presented in this thesis give Internet performance metrics, assuming that only basic network parameters such as the network topology, the number of TCP connections, link capacity, distance between network nodes and router bu er sizes are known. To obtain the performance metrics, TCP and network sub{models are used. A closed network of :=G=1 queues is used to develop each TCP sub-model where each queue represents a state of a TCP connection. An M=M=1=K queue is used for each network sub{model which represents the output interface of an IP router with a bu er capacity of K 􀀀��������1 packets. The two sub-models are iteratively solved. We also give closed form expressions for important TCP performance values and distributions. We show how the geometric, bounded geometric and truncated geometric distributions can be used to model reliable protocols such as TCP. We give models of the congestion window cwnd size distribution by conditioning on the slow start threshold ssthresh distribution and vice-versa. We also present models of the probabilities of TCP timeout and triple duplicate ACK receptions. Numerical results based on comparisons against ns2 simulations show that our models are more accurate, simpler and computationally more e cient than another well known TCP model. Our models can therefore be used to rapidly analyze network topologies with several bottlenecks and obtain detailed performance metrics.

Meting, simulasie en analitiese modelle is die tegnieke en gereedskap wat gebruik kan word om die Internet te ondersoek en verstaan. Meting kan slegs gebruik word om bestaande netwerke scenarios te verken. Meting is duur en onbuigsaam met die groei en samegesteldheid van die Internet. Simulasie modelle skaal nie met die groei van netwerk kapasiteit en gebruikers nie. Analitiese modelle wat berekening e ektief is is dus nodige gereedskap vir die ondersoek, ontwerp, afmeting en beplanning van IP (Internet Protocol) netwerke. Bestaande analitiese TCP modelle is of te eenvoudig om die interne dinamiek van die TCP saam te vat of hulle is te ingewikkeld om realistiese netwerk topologie met heelwat bottelnek skakels te analiseer. Literatuur toon dat die xed point algorithm (FPA) baie handig is vir die oplos van analitiese modelle van Internet verrigting. In hierdie tesis word vinnige en akkurate analitiese modelle van TCP verrigting opgelos deur FPA weergegee. Buiten wat deur eksperimentele literatuur aangedui word is daar geen omvattende bewyse van die konvergensie en uniekheid van die FPA nie. In hierdie tesis word aangedui hoe die FPA van analitiese modelle van betroubare Internet protokolle soos die TCP konvergeer na `n unieke vaste punt. Hierdie tesis spesi seer die voorwaardes benodig om die FPA te gebruik vir die oplos van analitiese modelle van realistiese Internet protokolle. `n Algemene uitvoer algoritme van die FPA van analitiese modelle van TCP vir realistiese en arbitr^ere netwerk topogra e insluitende heterogene TCP konneksies oor baie bottelnek skakels is ontwikkel. Die model in hierdie tesis gee Internet verrigting metodes met die aanname dat slegs basiese netwerk parameters soos netwerk topologie, die aantal TCP konneksies, die konneksie kapasiteit, afstand tussen netwerk nodusse en die roete bu er grotes bekend is. Om die verrigting metodes te verkry, word TCP en netwerk sub-modelle gebruik. `n Geslote netwerk van :=G=1 rye is gebruik om elke TCP sub-model, waar elke ry 'n toestand van `n TCP konneksie voorstel, te ontwikkel. `n M=M=1=K ry is gebruik vir elke netwerk sub-model wat die uitset koppelvlak van `n IP roetemaker met `n bu er kapasiteit van K 􀀀������� 1 pakkies voorstel. Die twee submodelle word iteratief opgelos. Geslote vorm uitdrukkings vir belangrike TCP verrigting waardes en verspreidings word gegee. Daar word getoon hoe geometriese, begrensde geometriese en geknotte geometriese verspreidings gebruik kan word om betroubare protokolle soos die TCP te modelleer. Modelle van die kongestie venster cwnd grootte verspreiding word gegee deur die kondisionering van die stadige aanvang drempel ssthresh verspreiding en andersom. Modelle van die voorspelling van TCP tyduit en trippel duplikaat ACK resepsie word weergegee. Numeriese resultate gebaseer op vergelykings met ns2 simulasies wys dat ons modelle meer akkuraat, eenvoudiger en berekeningsgewys meer e ektief is as ander wel bekende TCP modelle. Ons modelle kan dus gebruik word vir vinnig analise van netwerk topologie met verskeie bottelnekke en om gedetailleerde verrigting metodes te bekom.

Abstract:
Despite the persistent change and growth that characterizes the Internet, the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) still dominates at the transport layer, carrying more than 90\% of the global traffic. Despite its astonishing success, it has been observed that TCP can cause poor end-to-end performance, especially for large transfers and in network paths with high bandwidth-delay product. In this thesis, we focus on mechanisms that can address key problems in TCP performance, without any modification in the protocol itself. This evolutionary approach is important in practice, as the deployment of clean-slate transport protocols in the Internet has been proved to be extremely difficult. Specifically, we identify a number of TCP-related problems that can cause poor end-to-end performance. These problems include poorly dimensioned socket buffer sizes at the end-hosts, suboptimal buffer sizing at routers and switches, and congestion unresponsive TCP traffic aggregates. We propose solutions that can address these issues, without any modification to TCP.

In network paths with significant available bandwidth, increasing the TCP window till observing loss can result in much lower throughput than the path's available bandwidth. We show that changes in TCP are {em not required} to utilize all the available bandwidth, and propose the application-layer SOcket Buffer Auto-Sizing (SOBAS) mechanism to achieve this goal. SOBAS relies on run-time estimation of the round trip time (RTT) and receive rate, and limits its socket buffer size when the receive rate approaches the path's available bandwidth. In a congested network, SOBAS does not limit its socket buffer size. Our experiment results show that SOBAS improves TCP throughput in uncongested network without hurting TCP performance in congested networks.

Improper router buffer sizing can also result in poor TCP throughput. Previous research in router buffer sizing focused on network performance metrics such as link utilization or loss rate. Instead, we focus on the impact of buffer sizing on end-to-end TCP performance. We find that the router buffer size that optimizes TCP throughput is largely determined by the link's output to input capacity ratio. If that ratio is larger than one, the loss rate drops exponentially with the buffer size and the optimal buffer size is close to zero. Otherwise, if the output to input capacity ratio is lower than one, the loss rate follows a power-law reduction with the buffer size and significant buffering is needed. The amount of buffering required in this case depends on whether most flows end in the slow-start phase or in the congestion avoidance phase.

TCP throughput also depends on whether the cross-traffic reduces its send rate upon congestion. We define this cross-traffic property as {em congestion responsiveness}. Since the majority of Internet traffic uses TCP, which reduces its send rate upon congestion, an aggregate of many TCP flows is believed to be congestion responsive. Here, we show that the congestion responsiveness of aggregate traffic also depends on the flow arrival process. If the flow arrival process follows an open-loop model, then even if the traffic consists exclusively of TCP transfers, the aggregate traffic can still be unresponsive to congestion. TCP flows that arrive in the network in a closed-loop manner are always congestion responsive, on the other hand. We also propose a scheme to estimate the fraction of traffic that follows the closed-loop model in a given link, and give practical guidelines to increase that fraction with simple application-layer modifications.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an investigation of how to extend the reach of a Bluetooth personal area network by introducing the concept of Bluetooth Hotspots. Currently two Bluetooth devices cannot communicate with each other unless they are within radio range, since Bluetooth is designed as a cable-replacement technology for wireless communications over short ranges. An investigation was done into the feasibility of creating Bluetooth hotspots that allow distant Bluetooth devices to communicate with each other by transporting their communications between these hotspots via an alternative network infrastructure such as an IP network. Two approaches were investigated, masquerading of remote devices by the local hotspot to allow seamless communications and proxying services on remote devices by providing them on a local hotspot using a distributed service discovery database. The latter approach was used to develop applications capable of transporting Bluetooth’s RFCOMM and L2CAP protocols. Quantitative tests were performed to establish the throughput performance and latency of these transport applications. Furthermore, a number of selected Bluetooth services were tested which lead us to conclude that most data-based protocols can be transported by the system.

Abstract:
The use of Network Telescope systems has become increasingly popular amongst security researchers in recent years. This study provides a framework for the utilisation of this data. The research is based on a primary dataset of 40 million events spanning 50 months collected using a small (/24) passive network telescope located in African IP space. This research presents a number of differing ways in which the data can be analysed ranging from low level protocol based analysis to higher level analysis at the geopolitical and network topology level. Anomalous traffic and illustrative anecdotes are explored in detail and highlighted. A discussion relating to bogon traffic observed is also presented. Two novel visualisation tools are presented, which were developed to aid in the analysis of large network telescope datasets. The first is a three-dimensional visualisation tool which allows for live, near-realtime analysis, and the second is a two-dimensional fractal based plotting scheme which allows for plots of the entire IPv4 address space to be produced, and manipulated. Using the techniques and tools developed for the analysis of this dataset, a detailed analysis of traffic recorded as destined for port 445/tcp is presented. This includes the evaluation of traffic surrounding the outbreak of the Conficker worm in November 2008. A number of metrics relating to the description and quantification of network telescope configuration and the resultant traffic captures are described, the use of which it is hoped will facilitate greater and easier collaboration among researchers utilising this network security technology. The research concludes with suggestions relating to other applications of the data and intelligence that can be extracted from network telescopes, and their use as part of an organisation’s integrated network security systems

In recent times, the imminent lack of public IPv4 addresses has attracted the attention of both the research community and industry. The cellular industry has decided to combat this problem by using IPv6 for all new terminals. However, the success of 3G network deployment will depend on the services offered to end users. Currently, almost all services reside in the IPv4 address space, making them inaccessible to users in IPv6 networks. Thus, an intermediate translation mechanism is required. Previous studies on network address translation methods have shown that Realm Base Kluge Address Heuristic-IP, REBEKAH-IP supports all types of services that can be offered to IPv6 hosts from the public IPv4 based Internet, and provides excellent scalability. However, the method suffers from an ambiguity problem which may lead to call blocking. This thesis presents an improvement to REBEKAH-IP scheme in which the side effect is removed, creating a robust and fully scalable system. The improvement can be divided into two major tasks including a full investigation on the scalability of addressing and improvements to the REBEKAH-IP scheme that allow it to support important features such as ICMP and IP mobility. To address the first task a method called REBEKAH-IP with Port Extension (RPX) is introduced. RPX is extended from the original REBEKAH-IP scheme to incorporate centralised management of both IP address and port numbers. This method overcomes the ambiguity problem, and improves scalability. We propose a priority queue algorithm to further increase scalability. Finally, we present extensive simulation results on the practical scalability of RPX with different traffic compositions, to provide a guideline of the expected scalability in large-scale networks. The second task concerns enabling IP based communication. Firstly, we propose an ICMP translation mechanism which allows the RPX server to support important end-toend control functions. Secondly, we extend the RPX scheme with a mobility support scheme based on Mobile IP. In addition, we have augmented Mobile IP with a new tunneling mechanism called IP-in-FQDN tunneling. The mechanism allows for unique mapping despite the sharing of IP addresses while maintaining the scalability of RPX. We examine the viability of our design through our experimental implementation.
