Kalafsky, Michael S. "Repetitive tropical cyclogenesis during TCM-93." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/31451.

Abstract:
The small Tropical Storm (TS) Ofelia developed in the wake of Typhoon (TY) Nathan, and just prior to the development of TY Percy, during a small field experiment called Tropical Cyclone Motion (TCM-93) that was conducted in the western North Pacific from 20 July 1993 to 12 August 1993. Two Aircraft Observing Periods, AOP-1A and AOP-1B, provided flight level winds and Omega Dropwinsonde (ODW) data in a region of north oriented confluent flow between the monsoon gyre and the subtropical ridge on the two days prior to the formation of TS Ofelia. The ODW data and the flight-level winds are used in a multiquadric interpolation technique to define the mesoscale structure on a 100 km grid. A mid-tropospheric mesoscale cyclonic circulation with a horizontal scale of about 400 km is documented during AOP-1lA and AOP-1B. The mesoscale cyclonic circulation extended between 700 mb and 400 mb during AOP-1A and then extended down to the surface in AOP-1B. Visible imagery on the day following AOP-1B indicates a vortex of tightly curved low level cumulus clouds that then developed deep convection that subsequently led to the formation of TS Ofelia. This is considered to be the best data set of the preexisting environmental structure in which a "midget" typhoon forms.

This thesis describes the evolution of Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) technique and then develops the Analytically Described Trellis Codes with Partially Overlapped Signal Constellation for AWGN channels. This development is shown to obtain a performance gain over the TCM with conventional signal constellation. The new signal constellation is first introduced. A few examples (for one-, two-, and high-dimensional signal sets) are then given to show the performance gain due to the overlap of signal constellation. Bit error probability analysis is carried out for these examples.

Abstract:

Trellis-Coded Modulation (TCM) is employed with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) to provide error correction coding with no expense in bandwidth. There are two common implementations of TCM, namely pragmatic TCM and Ungerboeck TCM. Both schemes employ Viterbi algorithms for decoding but have different code construction. This thesis investigates and compares the performance of pragmatic TCM and Ungerboeck TCM by implementing the Viterbi decoding algorithm for both schemes with 16-QAM and 64-QAM. Both pragmatic and Ungerboeck TCM with six memory elements are considered. Simulations were carried out for both pragmatic and Ungerboeck TCM to evaluate their respective performance. The simulations were done using Matlab software, and an additive white Gaussian noise channel was assumed. The objective was to ascertain that pragmatic TCM, with its reduced-complexity decoding, is more suitable to adaptive modulation than Ungerboeck TCM.

WANG, YANXIA. "HIGH SPEED TURBO TCM OFDM FOR UWB AND POWERLINE SYSTEM." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2006. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3198.

Full text
Abstract:
Turbo Trellis-Coded Modulation (TTCM) is an attractive scheme for higher data rate transmission, since it combines the impressive near Shannon limit error correcting ability of turbo codes with the high spectral efficiency property of TCM codes. We build a punctured parity-concatenated trellis codes in which a TCM code is used as the inner code and a simple parity-check code is used as the outer code. It can be constructed by simple repetition, interleavers, and TCM and functions as standard TTCM but with much lower complexity regarding real world implementation. An iterative bit MAP decoding algorithm is associated with the coding scheme. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation has been a promising solution for efficiently capturing multipath energy in highly dispersive channels and delivering high data rate transmission. One of UWB proposals in IEEE P802.15 WPAN project is to use multi-band OFDM system and punctured convolutional codes for UWB channels supporting data rate up to 480Mb/s. The HomePlug Networking system using the medium of power line wiring also selects OFDM as the modulation scheme due to its inherent adaptability in the presence of frequency selective channels, its resilience to jammer signals, and its robustness to impulsive noise in power line channel. The main idea behind OFDM is to split the transmitted data sequence into N parallel sequences of symbols and transmit on different frequencies. This structure has the particularity to enable a simple equalization scheme and to resist to multipath propagation channel. However, some carriers can be strongly attenuated. It is then necessary to incorporate a powerful channel encoder, combined with frequency and time interleaving. We examine the possibility of improving the proposed OFDM system over UWB channel and HomePlug powerline channel by using our Turbo TCM with QAM constellation for higher data rate transmission. The study shows that the system can offer much higher spectral efficiency, for example, 1.2 Gbps for OFDM/UWB which is 2.5 times higher than the current standard, and 39 Mbps for OFDM/HomePlug1.0 which is 3 times higher than current standard. We show several essential requirements to achieve high rate such as frequency and time diversifications, multi-level error protection. Results have been confirmed by density evolution. The effect of impulsive noise on TTCM coded OFDM system is also evaluated. A modified iterative bit MAP decoder is provided for channels with impulsive noise with different impulsivity.

Abstract: This thesis presents the performance of coded modulation with convolutional codes over rings of integers modulo-8 on fadinf channels. The performance is obtained by computer simulation and it is given by curves of Bit Error Rate (BER) versus Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). Basic concepts related with codes modulation, characterization of digital modulations, codes modulation with convolutional codes based on rings of integers and fading channels are presented. The fading channels considered in this study are: Rayleigh, Rice and Land Mobile Satellite Fading Channel. The channels are non selective in frequency. The performance of ring-TCM codes are compared against their Ungerboeck counterparts, with same bandwidth and information data rate. Soft decision maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding using Viterbi algorithm is assumed. The utilization of interleaving/deinterleaving is explained and taken into account in the comparative performance analysis

Abstract:

Bohner, Richard H. Jr. "Definition of the mean environmental steering flow for TCM-90 tropical cyclones." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/23615.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
A definition for the environmental steering flow in the vicinity of the TCM-90 tropical cyclones is sought by low-pass filtering the Naval Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System deep-layer mean u- and v- velocity and geopotential height fields. One-dimensional and two-dimensional Fourier decompositions in a limited region (120(o) long) and in a global region are compared with six wavenumber low-pass filters (1-6, 1-9,...,1-21). The measure of goodness of the environmental steering flow interpolated to the storm position was to determine the minimum standard deviation of the propagation vector (defined as difference between storm motion and the steering estimate) for all six storms and the ensemble. The best results were found for either the limited and global region one-dimensional Fourier analyses of the u and v wind fields with a low-pass filter that included only wavenumbers 1 -15. The sic TCM-90 tropical cyclones were subsequently analyzed using this definition of the steering flow to estimate the propagation vectors and to examine the linear shear and relative vorticity gradients of the environmental flow. Except for early stages of storms in low latitude, the low-pass filtered analyses provided steering vectors consistent with the changing translation directions. However, the translation speeds tended to exceed the storm motion and lead to more westward propagation vectors than expected. These propagation vectors tended to be almost perpendicular to the absolute vorticity gradient vector.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between organizational commitment and supervisor commitment within a Swedish context using TCM Employee Commitment Survey. Measures were done via a questionnaire distributed to a total of 188 people, with a response rate of 35%. The respondents were employees from three different organizations within the public sector. They were asked to consider different statements regarding their organization, their supervisor and work-related identity. The results showed that if continuance commitment to supervisor is low, affective organizational commitment will be high. The results also showed that when continuance commitment to supervisor was high, continuance organizational commitment was also high. When normative supervisor commitment was high, so was normative organizational commitment. In contrast to previous studies, we found no correlation between affective organizational commitment and affective commitment to supervisor.

Abstract:
This survey is to study the attitudes, personal experiences of Health care professional students, and knowledge about the basic concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Hong Kong and Guangzhou district of Mainland China. The research methodology used was a questionnaire which was distributed amongst healthcare professional students in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. About Seventy-five percent of participants have ever used TCM at some time to treat minor diseases. On a scale from zero to ten, the mean (SD) scores for the perceived effectiveness of TCM were 6.55 (2.07), and most of them (89%) gave five to nine scores. The average proportion of TCM used in their whole lives estimate was 24%. Most of participants (83.3%) used TCM only one to five times per year in the last five years. In participants’ opinion, TCM is more natural and having less adverse effect, while WM is pure, specific, credible, easy to administer and having better patients’ compliance. WM was the priority, or even first choice when the participants faced with a variety of representative diseases. And people had a good understanding degree of some basic concepts of TCM. Although there were a few differences in gender groups comparing and district groups comparing, broadly speaking the similarities still were in majority. In conclusion, most of pharmacy students have their own knowledge about TCM, but more measures must be carried out to improve the popularizing rate of TCM. Moreover, mainland students have better knowledge of TCM and more positive attitude compared to TCM. The attitude and practice do not appear to vary significantly between genders.

The need for increasing internet connection speeds motivated the creation of a new standard, G.fast, for digital subscriber lines (DSL), in order to provide fiber-like performance using short twisted pair copper wires. This dissertation focuses in the two former candidate codes for the forward error correction (FEC) scheme, namely Reed-Solomon (RS) with trellis-coded modulation (TCM), from previous DSL standards, and low density parity check (LDPC) codes, from the G.hn standard for home networking. The main objective is to compare both schemes, in order to evaluate which of them performs better, considering metrics such as error correction performance and computational cost. Even though the selected code for G.fast was RS with TCM, it is believed that this choice was biased, as a more recent iterative code like LDPC is known to have a better error correction performance.

Horwitz, Michael Richard. "A hardware implementation of a Viterbi decoder for a (3,2/3) TCM code." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20182.

Full text
Abstract:
The report details the design of a dedicated Viterbi decoder chip set for an Ungerboek (3,2/3) Trellis Coded Modulation code. It was the specific intention of the thesis to design a system that could be implemented on standard Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) yet still be able to cope with high bit rates. The focus of the research was to both evaluate and modify the existing VLSI design techniques and to develop new techniques to make this possible. Trellis Coded Modulation refers to a specific sub-class of convolutional codes that ire an example of coded modulation. In coded modulation there is a direct link between the encoding and modulation processes aimed at improving the performance of the code by introducing redundancy in the signal set used to transmit the code. Ungerboek developed a technique for mapping the encoded words onto points in the signal set, called mapping by set partitioning, that maximises the Euclidian distance between adjacent codewords, and hence maximises the minimum distance between any two output sequences in the code. The Viterbi algorithm is a maximum likelihood decoder for convolutional codes such as TCM. The operation of the Viterbi algorithm is based on using soft decision decoding to produce an estimate of how well the received sequence corresponds with any of the allowed code sequences. The code sequences which most closely matches the received sequence is then decoded to form the output of the decoder. A central problem in implementing systems using TCM with Viterbi decoding is that although the encoder is a relatively simple device, the decoder is not. The complexity of the Viterbi decoder for any given TCM scheme will be the major drawback in implementing the scheme. As such techniques for reducing the complexity of Viterbi decoders are of interest to developers of communication systems. The algorithms describing the implementation and operation of the Viterbi algorithm can be categorised into three main layers. The top layer holds the theoretical algorithm itself, in the second layer are the set of algorithms that describe the broad techniques used to manipulate the theoretical algorithm into a form in which it can be implemented, and the third layer of algorithms describe the implementations themselves. The work contained in this thesis concentrates on the second two layers of algorithms.

Abstract:
For a lot of small cities in Sweden, mentioned in this paper as small towns, there is a strongthreat in terms of external trade. Small cities is defined in our essay as a smaller town withthe characteristic features of a city, so there is a main street in the city and a distinguishingcenter. City centers around the country have been emptied for both organizations andpopulations for decades in relation to the fact that the market has moved outside the city. Theresult of that is the fact that the city centers are at high risk of extinction. In order to reducethis risk, a major effort has been made on cooperation in several parts of the country and alsoin cooperation with our neighboring country Norway. Townships has cooperated to workexternally with other cities and internally to get different actors in the city center to cooperatewith each other. Previous research shows that cooperation is seen as a important ingredient instrengthening of a city center, and it is emphasized that all parties that has an interest in thecity center must cooperate. It is then required that both the public and private sector is a partof the cooperation, which in this paper is called a public-private partnership. In this study, weinvestigated the role of united action in city centers work for increased attractiveness. Ourpurpose of the study is to investigate how organizations work for continued survival in a citycenter. Examinations were made on the work carried out by two small towns in Sweden.Their approach was studied to see how they have avoided or defeated the threat that encirclesthem. In order to achieve our purpose we have conducted a qualitative study where we haveexamined and interpreted the empirical material we collected through the two interviews thatwere made with three respondents who work with center development in the cities wereviewed. Our theoretical reference framework is based on scientific articles and presentscurrent research as well as theories about town center management and methods forachieving successful development in city centers. The empirical basis of the study is based onthe two interviews that we have made with respondents in a career in center development. One of our respondents is a project manager and work with projects in center development, one is a business developer for a municipality in Sweden and the third has a professional roleas a center developer. The theoretical reference framework and empiricism are the startingpoints for our analysis and interpretations. It is because of that we have been able to drawconclusions about city center development and its methods of success. Collaboration isnecessary for a city center to achieve increased attractiveness. It is not enough that differentcity centers collaborates with each other in order to achieve successful city centerdevelopment and increased attractiveness to the city. It is vital that the inner core of the citycooperates with each other, and by that we mean that the city's own trader, property owner, municipality, politicians, residents, consumers, visitors, etc., work together towards commongoals. The two most important factors for collaboration that we could read were commitmentand a common goal. Thanks to the study it is clear that the two factors are crucial forcooperation in reducing the risk of urban deaths.

Abstract:
Chinese medicine is one of China's key national assets, an indigenous medical knowledge and practices that serves Chinese for thousands of years. As very little research has been focused on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from systems of innovation perspective, the topic of study was chosen. This qualitative case study research introduces, defines and explores how TCM organisations collaborate to innovate from an evolutionary, interactive system perspective. In particular, the focus is on the development of knowledge and capabilities related to TCM drug research and production. Thirty one TCM organisation cases were analysed and presented in this study, interpreting their behaviour in terms of ideas drawn mainly from the literatures on systems of innovation, collaboration between organisations and resource (knowledge) based theory of the firm. Actors such as government play various roles in facilitating organisational and sectoral innovation processes. 'Various policy instruments', in particular research funding and institutions (e.g., standards and regulations) were used to enhance innovation and production. Various forms of collaborative networks were found among key actors: enterprises, universities, research organisations and end users. They contribute to the active innovation processes of 'Identification, Selection, Integration and Creation' of tangible and intangible outcomes and changes. Based on the research, new insights were derived as to how indigenous resources (defined as original and/or traditional knowledge and capabilities) may lead to indigenous innovation. This thesis contributes to the academic understanding of systems of innovation operating in the context of indigenous product and related process developments with reference to various actors interplaying in complex networks (systems) of collaborations. New understandings made on the processes of indigenous innovation (using TCM as a case) through investigating the actors' roles, inter-relations and their restless attempts to identify opportunities and problems, select and integrate different indigenous, scientific, technological and managerial knowledge, capabilities, resources and institutions, to create value that may 'fit' in evolutionary terms, the demand of the key actors in the sector.

In this study a total of 48 embryos were used in the compacts morulae, initial blastocysts and blastocysts stages in the degrees I and II, obtained from 14 adult domestic cats. Two animals presented natural manifestation of the oestrus and 12 animals were artificially induced to ovarian activity and ovulation. They received one only application of 150 IU of gonadotropins equine corionic (eCG) and 84h after, one application of 100 IU of gonadotropins human corionic (hCG), and all the animals were coupled naturally. Six days after the first mating, all cats were submitted to laparotomy, and through an adapted transcornual technique the embryos were collected and classified in agreement with IETS (1998). 27 of these were cultivated in a TCM 199 modified with a controlled CO2 atmosphere for 24 hours. The embryos were classified by development stage, quality and blastomeres number, observing a development index until expanded blastocysts in degree I of 77.7% with an average of 161±15,8 blastomeres was reached. In 21 embryos the freezing technique was tested in a commercial medium with 10% of glycerol associated with 0,1molL-1 of sucrose. After the unfreezing, in 37oC water with the same cultivation conditions, a developmental index of 38.1%, was observed until the stage of expanded blastocysts in degree I, with average number of 139.1±11,8 blastomeres. Although the freezing and unfreezing protocols, had reduced the developmental index of feline embryos by 51% and reduce the blastomeres number (P<0.01), it was considerate a viable technique in domestic and wild felines.

Abstract:
In order for town centres to manage increased competition in retailing, co-operation between stakeholders in a strategic alliance has become more important. A typical set of stakeholders in a strategic alliance for strengthening retailingare retailers, local authorities and property owners. The roles of retailer’sand local authorities’ are well researched. However, the role of property owners is not. The aim of this paper seeks to unfold the role of property owners in a strategic alliance. This is a case study of a medium-sized town in which semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders were conducted. In the chosen town there is a TCM alliance co-operation at work. The above mentioned stakeholders are possible members in an alliance. The case studied shows a fragmented property owner market with no dominant property owner, as it is in many medium-sized towns. Our study shows that many stakeholders look at the role of property owners as crucial for town centre development. However, property owners do not see that they can significantly contribute to or benefit from the development. The main reasons for this opinion are that they consider themselves as not having enough resources or the capability to influence the town development.

Abstract:
This master project has the objective to develop a Business Plan which will enable the launch of a TCM health-preservation club which will offer TCM method servicess for modern female consumers in Anyang area, Henan Province, China. The health problems of modern females are rising rapidly due to the unhealthy lifestyle and environmental problems and the TCM in this area has highly potential market, especially targeting for females. However, based on a ground study, we quickly realised that all clinic or club look alike and propose the same local specialties with less professional and services level. By catching the markt opportunities, we analyse the current market with macro data and comparing them with field data I acquired with a questionnaire and a field trip, I decided to launch a TCM club - the new serves intends to change female relationship with TCM consumption providing them a solution specifically designed to satisfy their needs. It is aiming to use TCM therapy to not only solve females’ health problems, but also improve females' life quality, even achieve longevity. We show in this business plan that our business are low capital requirement business that become quickly profitable and we do not need to have a loan. It should reach a turnover of 47,617€ and a profit of 4,130€ the first year.

Most satellite communication systems employ a high power amplifier(HPA) driven at or near saturation for better po- wer efficiency. The combination of this HPA and the prece- ding pulse shaping filter leads to a nonlinear channel wi- th memory and results in severe signal distortions: const- ellation warping and clustering. In order to meet the growing demand for high data rates a- nd to utilize the available bandwidth efficiency, further generations of satellite communication equipment should t- ake the advantages of the TCM schemes with high-order sig- nal constellation which can provide both the power and ba- ndwidth efficiency. In this thesis, we investigate and compare the performanc- es of predistorted high- level TCM schemes on the nonlinear satellite channel. Moreover, we design some high-level TC- M with special signal constellations that outperform the conventional PSK or QAM scheme, and yet do not suffer exc- essive degradation due to channel nonlinearities. The res- ults obtained by computer simulation show that a combinat- ion of moderate back-off and simple data predistortion of high-level TCM can considerably improve the robustness to nonlinear ISI.

It is known that non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can provide higher capacity than orthogonal multiple access. In 3GPP, some NOMA schemes have been standardized, known as multiuser-superposition-transmission (MUST). In this thesis, we study MUST schemes and propose a trellis-coded-modulation (TCM) assisted NOMA system. The proposed system consists of a convolutional code operated in bit-level and a cascaded TCM code operated in symbol-level. To have an unequal-error-protection property for near and far users, four-dimensional TCM is used to construct square-shape QAM constellations, providing two transmission rates for the near user. Power allocation is reserved in the proposed scheme, effectively increasing the flexibility in real-word applications. At the receiver, an iterative decoding scheme is conducted with the BCJR algorithm. With the proposed scheme, dependence is not only introduced in the bit level but also in the symbol level in the subcarriers. This will enhance the resisting capability for frequency-selective fading. The proposed scheme requires minimum changes in current LTE specifications and its real-world application is highly feasible. Simulation shows that the proposed method performs much better than the existing NOMA scheme.

Trellis-coded modulation(TCM) is a scheme combining codingnd modulation. It can get significant coding gains withoutncreasing the transmitted power or the required bandwidth.ut the complexity of Viterbi decoder increases correspondingly.or the TCM encoder proposed in this thesis, there are eight pathsn all parallel transitions of the four- state trellis diagram.he VLSI architecture proposed in this thesis has the advantagef TL(Table-Lookup) method, that it needs only a clock time toecide the minimum branch metric path of the parallel transition,nd finish the branch metric calculation. On the other hand,t needs much smaller area than TL method. This chip has two working modes: Encoding and Decoding.two-phase pipelining architecture for implementing both encodingnd decoding improves the speed performance of this chip. We usehe standard-cell of CCL provided by CIC(Chip Implementationenter),to finish the chip design on CADENCE OPUS3. This chipas fabricated using TSMC 0.8um technology. The chip size is.43*0.46 cm*cm, it contains 48 PADs and gate count is 15440.he working frequency is 30MHZ, and the data rate is 13.3Mbits/s.

Synchronous Conduction Mode (SCM) buck converter offer Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) but suffer from large output inductor RMS current at light load, which are lowering down the efficiency. Triangular Current Mode (TCM) also offer ZVS and improve the light load efficiency but suffer from large switching frequency variations, which are complicating the EMI filter design and the digital control. As a solution, a Clamp-Switch TCM buck converter can be proposed into this paper, by adding clamp switch to limit the switching frequency variation and analyzing switching time interval to calculate the switch-on time, feasibility can be verified by circuit simulation software. With digital control, a 240 watt rated power, 12 volt output of CL-TCM buck converter prototype can be realized.

Three schemes of combining block-coded modulation (BCM) and trellis-coded modulation (TCM) to get a higher gain for high data transmission rate are proposed. Scheme 1: Signal set partition is a major work in constructing the multi- dimensional TCM system. Since a BCM system of length n can be seen as a set of 2n-dimensional signal points and can be constructed by the multi-level construction method, we propose a systematic way to construct multiple BCM systems and the whole 2n-dimensional signal points are partitioned by these BCM systems. Scheme 2: Since a proper BCM system can approximate the dense lattice, TCM can be constructed based on the proper BCM system. Thus, a higher coding gain can be obtained from both the distance gain of the TCM structure and the density gain of the dense lattice. Theoretically, the asymptotic coding gain can reach 5.27 dB for 8-dimensional case and 7.15 dB for 16-dimensional case. Scheme 3: In constructing TCM system, the whole signal points must be partitioned into two families. We can use two BCM systems to serve as the two families. Since a larger signal constellation is used, the coding gain is higher than scheme 2. For QAM signals, the 90 ? 180 ? and 270 ? phase ambiguity problems must be considered. Three criterions must be satisfied such that the problems can be removed by introducing a differential encoder/decoder. All of the proposed schemes satisfy the three criterions. In summary, three simple and systematic ways to design the coded modulation systems with high asymptotic coding gain for high data rate transmission are proposed and the 90 ? 180 ? and 270 ? phase ambiguity problems are solved.

The Single-pair High Speed Digital Subscriber Loop (SHDSL) is the new generation symmetric DSL technique which could supply at most 2.3 Mbps downlink and uplink data rate symmetrically to subscribers on a long loop. However, the InterSymbol Interference (ISI) is severe especially duration the transmission over a long loop. Normal data transmission is impossible without properly taking care of the ISI problem. To assure SHDSL tranceivers to provide full-rate transmission, we need a powerful adaptive equalizer to ease the ISI problem. The decision feedback equalizer is the most often used equalizer for sovling the ISI problem. However, it has the error propagation problem, which will degrade the system performance. To improve the performance, the joint equalization and channel decoding is necessary. Nevertheless, combining the trellis decoder in the decision feedback equalizer will result in high complexity hardware. A powerful equalizer called Tomlinson-Harashima precoder (THP) system was proposed to solve this problem. By use of the procoding technique, the joint equalization and channel decoding can be accomplished by cascade a linear equalizaer and a TCM decoder for channel coding. In this theisis, starting from algorithm design and computer simulation, we design the THP system and TCM decoder hardware architectures according to the G.SHDSL recommendation. The resulting hardware could achieve the maximum 2.3 Mbps data rate under the 50 MHz operation clock. The hardware was verified on the FPGA development board.

The purpose of this study is to explore what a BSN graduate who is going to devote herself/himself to medical field should know about TCM, attitude and skills. Until now there is no study pointing out the knowledge a nursing staff should know about TCM because many sources of nursing textbooks and references are still absorbed from the western. For the lack of a common consensus, the related workers have difficulties in designing courses to fit the needs. In order to understand what difficulties and requirements they face in their practical nursing experience, 31 people, including the consumer, the nursing staff and the clinical instructor, are interviewed by four Focus group symposiums. The result is then discussed by four academic experts in the Panels Discussion. They conclude nine competence of TCM that a BSN graduate should have. Firstly, to understand the basic concepts of TCM, including Yin/Yang, Five Evolutive phases, holistic view, five viscera Six Bowels, meridian, and concept of therapy and health preservation. Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) has gained international recognition and popularity, sulfur fumigation is used to store TCM herbs in order to meet the increase demand for medicines. Sulfur fumigation has the benefit to keep moist, prevent insects and moulds and preserve colour and freshness, however, trace amount can affect the quality of TCM and human health. China supplied majority of world’s TCM herbs, however over use and incorrect use of sulfur fumigation were often seen in its local market. In 2008 South Korea had set sulfur dioxide residue requirement less than 30 ppm for 266 TCM herbs;in the late 2013, the second supplement of “Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2010 Edition” also comprehensively regulated on all TCM herbs with limits in the range of 150-400ppm. Taiwan annually imports about 36,000 tonnes of TCM herbs, of which 85% imported from China, in this study we found most of the TCM herbs still undergo sulfur fumigation, with Anemarrhena Rhizome and Ginkgo seed exceed the 500ppm limits set by Taiwan Herbal Pharmacopeia. Comparing our results to the previous finding, a reduction of over limit rate but a general raise in the median of sulfur dioxide residues indicate the actual process has been conduct even more frequently, with ever increase attention on the safety of TCM, to avoid sulfur dioxide containing herbs, an appropriate standard base on its nature and usage is necessary to protect the safety of patients and ensure the sustainable development of TCM.

The correlation between meteorological changes and health has been heavily studied in traditional Chinese medicine for a long time. It is believed that the meteorological factors such as wind, cold, heat, damp, dryness and fire are the main causes for most exogenous syndromes. For example, wind-caused syndromes occur mostly in spring, heat-caused syndromes occur mostly in early summer, damp-caused syndromes occur mostly in late summer, dryness-caused syndromes occur mostly in autumn, and cold-caused syndromes occur mostly in winter. Therefore, this thesis applies data mining techniques, the Pearson correlation coefficient and one-way analysis of variance, to investigate the correlation between the regional meteorological changes and the number of cancer patients for corresponding exogenous syndromes. The research results can facilitate the medical practitioners in Yunlin and Chiayi areas to more thoroughly understand the characteristics of exogenous syndromes of local patients. The research results of this thesis show that heart qi dysfunction (qi stagnation) syndrome, liver fire stagnation syndrome, and liver yang sputum syndrome have a positive correlation with mean temperature; liver fire inflammation syndrome has a negative correlation with air pressure; heart qi resistance (cold condensation) syndrome has a negative correlation with mean wind speed.

14.5 million women in Germany between the ages of 15 – 44 are plagued from menstrual pain starting from minor discomfort to major pain and cramps. All those women share the same imperative wish: the pain should stop. We found a disruptive solution that acts as an alternative for synthesized medication and has the potential to revolutionize the market for dysmenorrhea remedies, functional foods with the properties revered of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM as a method to alleviate menstrual pains has not yet found its way to Germany (and the rest of the European Union). Thus we offer our customers a completely new solution to a problem as old as humanity itself. Our products are all based on TCM ingredients with thousands of years of tradition and successful practice that have also been clinically proven. Just over the last 25 years over a billion women in East Asia have fallen back on using herbs and functional foods of the Traditional Chinese Medicine as their remedy of first choice when comes to menstrual pain and other complaints. The research shows a great market potential for TCM products as a treatment for dysmenorrhea in Germany.

Palpation is one of the fundamentals in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In recent years, plenty researches on this high efficiency holistic health diagnosis method has been conducted. In this paper, a robust pulse measurement system is presented, which is capable of following suit of TCM doctors performing palpation on patient. Our system is comprised of strain gauge based pulse force sensing unit, signal processing circuit which contains amplification and filter, data acquisition system and user interface. The pulse data are recorded for real-time signal display and post-processing. This paper adopt an average waveform calculation technique for retrieving a representative single pulse waveform to avoid subjective error. With the measured pressing depth and force, this paper considers the effects of pulse impedance and takes it as an auxiliary performance index to enhance evaluation of pulse waveforms from a TCM perspective. This paper aim to provide an advance approach to preserve pulse pattern in exceptional precision. By using gamma probability density function to correlate pulse waveform and the retrieved pulse impedance information to create the pulse pattern model. Further, we designed experiments that uses three types of external stimulation on human to generate different pulse pattern for measurement. The results verify the purposed system and pulse pattern modelling method has high reproducibility and effectiveness for various patterns.
