Abstract:
Primary cutaneous γδ T-cell lymphoma (PCGD-TCL) is an extremely rare and aggressive T-cell neoplasm with complex heterogeneity. We present a series of two patients who presented with firm, subcutaneous nodules and were diagnosed with PCGD-TCL. In both cases, biopsies demonstrated a both superficial and deep adnexotropic infiltrate comprised of angiocentric, medium- to large-sized atypical lymphocytes. The infiltrate extended into the panniculus. Immuno–histochemical stains highlighted atypical lymphocytes that expressed CD3, CD8 and CD56 but were negative for EBV ISH. A brisk histiocytic response with focal aggregation into granulomas was highlighted with a PG-M1 stain. The atypical lymphocytes were positive for gene rearrangements on a TCR delta stain and negative for βF-1. CT and PET scan in one of the two patients demonstrated diffuse, subcutaneous, ground-glass foci; hypermetabolic soft tissue nodules; and lymphadenopathy in the lungs, as well as splenomegaly. A diagnosis of histiocyte-rich PCGD-TCL was rendered. A histiocyte-rich, granulomatous variant of γδ T-cell lymphoma is extremely rare. Its potentially misleading resemblance to inflammatory granulomatous conditions could pose a diagnostic pitfall in this already challenging condition. This variant may resemble granulomatous mycosis fungoides and granulomatous slack skin syndrome, but it has a distinct, aggressive clinical outcome.

Abstract:
Transgenerational control intention (TCI) is a pivotal characteristic of many family firms. Yet, it remains unclear whether TCI benefits family-firm performance by instilling a long-term view, or hurts performance by fueling harmful socioemotional wealth (SEW) goals. We posit that it depends who pursues it. When faced with TCI, family managers are known to suffer from cognitive biases that, we submit, do not similarly apply to nonfamily managers. Thus, only family managers harm performance when pursuing TCI. An empirical investigation of 107 private German family firms supports our theory; the effect of TCI on firm performance depends on who pursues it.

Abstract:
Girish Karnad was a versatile genius. He was a prolific Kannada writer, a brilliant playwright, a fantastic actor, a talented film director and a meritorious scholar. His long stay in Europe has confirmed him that the Western theatre has nothing to provide him. Therefore, in search of a new mode of expression, he has used ancient Indian myths and history to represent the contemporary issues. The Fire and the Rain is one of the most successful drama of Karnad. In this drama, Karnad has made a brilliant and innovative use of mask. In Indian dramatic culture, masks were used frequently to represent the dramatic characters. But in The Fire and the Rain, mask is both a stage-prop as well as an important tool for the dramatist, by which he has successfully been able to expose the brahminical society. In this paper I will focus on how Girish Karnad has used the mask to unmask the upper-caste Brahmins.

Abstract:
Firms’ performance during exogenous crises depends on several factors, from strategic foresight, financial readiness, and a number of firm-specific as well as sectoral aspects, also including luck and government support. The aim of this paper is to investigate the extent to which the ‘crisis readiness’ of firms, defined by factors like a proactive strategic approach, digitalisation, and financial constraints, as well as the reliance on or availability of government support, is responsible for the outcome during the COVID-19 crisis compared to the long-run contribution made by these factors. The empirical investigation uses a unique combination of firm-level balance sheet data and unique survey data concerning the strategic focus and implementation of Industry 4.0. While the literature suggests that digitalisation, a strategic proactive approach, and crisis readiness (itself depending on several factors) impacted the firms significantly during the COVID-19 crisis, the results show firm performance primarily depended on other (sectoral) aspects serving as a major exogenous factor impacting their performance. During the crisis, digitalisation was additionally mentioned as an important adjustment factor. However, using firm-level data we show that while companies were able to mitigate certain impacts of the supply and demand shocks triggered by COVID-19 using their internal resources and characteristics, including strategic elements, the biggest explanatory factor remains the sector involved. This leads to important managerial and policy recommendations, principally stressing the importance of proactivity and agility for firms’ long-run performance, whereas in the short run the state must help mitigate the effects.

Abstract:
We examine whether organizational climate for personal initiative (PI climate) is conducive to firm innovation in small and medium-sized firms. Employees with PI are self-starting, proactive, and persistent, and a PI climate is characterized by common norms of encouraging PI at the workplace. A climate that fosters PI among employees would enhance the innovation output of firms, since it increases not only proactive thinking about future opportunities and problems but self-starting action as well. This PI climate is distinct from the team climate inventory (TCI, Anderson and West, 1996). We contrast the PI climate measure (Baer and Frese, 2003) with the TCI for predicting radical and incremental innovations in firms. Findings reveal (with 25 firms, N = 82 employees) that PI climate was related to radical innovation, but not incremental innovation. On the other hand, the TCI (unrelated to radical innovation) was related to incremental innovation. Our study results imply that different organizational climates account for the different forms of innovation in firms.

Abstract:
We discuss family firm longevity building upon a new conceptual lens, informed by transaction cost economics (TCE), but augmented with corporate diplomacy thinking. Family firms, because of their superior foundation of bonding social capital (interpreted here as a firm-specific, transaction cost-reducing governance mechanism), have an intrinsic advantage vis-à-vis nonfamily firms with regards to utilizing network ties supportive of longevity. Most family firms, however, fail to leverage effectively this governance tool to achieve longevity, due to bifurcation bias (BB), that is, the unchecked prioritization of assets and relationships that hold affective value for the family. We propose that corporate diplomacy, through its three process steps, familiarization, acceptance, and engagement, can help the family firm augment its baseline reservoir of social capital, and allows improved economizing on contracting challenges that endanger its survival. Externally, corporate diplomacy helps economizing on expressions of BB in relationships with outside stakeholders, thus augmenting bridging social capital. Internally, it can address biased treatment of family versus nonfamily human assets, thereby augmenting bonding social capital. Intergenerationally, corporate diplomacy supports access to, and improved reliance upon the firm’s social capital by next generation family members. The family firms that focus on corporate diplomacy processes and the resulting social capital creation greatly improve their chances of longevity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Construction is one of the oldest of industries in the world, with the first establishedconstruction company being established around 230 BC. One of the biggest industries inEurope, at an estimated €900 billion a year, it also accounts for 40% of total energy consumption and 40% of total waste generation in the EU1 . Although the majority ofthese are from the use phase of the built environment, there is a lack of a comprehensiveenvironmental risk management system for the construction phase. This study proposesan environmental risk management framework based on the Beer-Ziolkowski model of risk management for both site specific and non-site specific construction operations witha stakeholder centric approach. It proposes stakeholder involvement to identify the risksaided with trend analysis of strategic regulatory implications from the concernedauthority - Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development and thecurrent orgnisational practice of objective environmental risk identification from ISO14001 guidance. Scope of site specific and non-site specific risks are narrowed down tosite operational setup and construction materials respectively, consistent with theorganisations view of the most important risks from those two classes of risks. Riskassessment is suggested through Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) method for site specific risksand European Union System for the Evaluation of Substances (EUSES) for non-sitespecific risks. Total Cost Accounting (TCA) of project alternative evaluation isrecommended with a view to internalise the external costs. A two tiered integration ofrisk information in the buisess process is suggested – categorised risk reduction processat the level of projects and general good practice aided with risk information at the policylevel. Being a framework for management of environmental risk as opposed to a methodfor a specific environmental risk, the principles and suggestions are broadly scoped withcase studies for identification and analysis of risks.Through the practice of prudent engagement of stakeholders and scientific risk assessments, this framework would help the organisation enable safer operational practices in the context of environmental effects. In foresight this in turn will have rendered the host firm more competent in terms of making sustainable business decisions.

Abstract:
The cinematographic experience is not the experience of the mirror. It is more the metamorphosis of the body: the body of an individual spectator who is physically present in a public place and the body of the spectator which surges as a subject within the movement. But what is movement? is it the displacement of an object going from one point in space to another? or is it the shimmering light in "the depth of the field" ("profondeur de champ")?. Is it a character walking? or is it the discusrelationship between a motion and an emotion? is it really what happens on the "field" ("champ")? or is it more accurately what happens between the "field" ("champ"} and the "open-ended - field" ("tout-champ": in french this has the same pronounciation as the word "touchant" which means touching in both the physical and metaphorical sense)? these questions meet the thinking of gilles deleuze, especially his concept of the movement-image and the time-image. They are in direct confrontation with his thought. Through this confrontation these questions lead to a reflection on modes of perceptions in general and the cinematographic perception in particular. This discussion ultimately shows the need for a light-image theory as a paradigm of contemporaneousness, and the necessity of a theory to show the spectator as he appears : subject within movement or movements

Abstract:
Institutions, and their underlying rules, are essential for economic development, in that they provide a framework for markets to operate. However, different types of regulatory roles and even institutional settings may have very different effects on outcomes at the firm or individual level. This dissertation examines the effect of several types of rules and institutions on productivity and related measures. The first chapter examines the effect of international competition and domestic competitive barriers on firm-level productivity growth in the OECD. A close interaction is observed between import penetration and domestic barriers to entry, conditional on a firm's distance to the technological frontier. The second chapter examines the effects of labor market reform on plants in different Indian states. A positive effect of labor market reform is found on plant-level productivity growth in labor-intensive and volatile industries. The third chapter looks at Indian exporters who took advantage of capital account liberalization to invest abroad, and explores whether they gained through learning-by-doing. After matching these firms with similar firms that did not invest abroad, the chapter finds that productivity was not boosted, though firms did gain in terms of their overall size through market access. The fourth chapter explores how the legal system in different Mexican states has impacted the size of firms through heightened capital intensity. States with higher quality legal institutions are found to have systematically larger and more productive firms.

Abstract:
Various types of electrochemical sensors based on the inhibition of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) have been presented for the analysis of organophosphates (OPC). A special design of thick film sensors and electrochemical detector for cholinesterases assay and their inhibitors in aqueous samples has been developed. For this assay, thiol sensitive sensors based on screen printed graphite electrode modified with nanoparticles of manganese dioxide were used. High sensitivity of manganese dioxide modified thick film sensors towards thiocholine and therefore low detection limit of BChE (1 pM) enabled their use for subnanomolar detection of an organophosphate pesticide diazinon, and other irreversible inhibitors of BChE. This work also presents modern innovative approach for the analysis of BChE by Raman spectroscopy. New SERS-substrates based on silver paste for sensitive quantification of BChE activity were obtained, characterized and applied to thiocholine detection, with LOD (TCh) being 260 nM. Real samples of human plasma were analyzed; a good correlation between spectrophotometric detection and Raman detection was shown. The developed technique is inexpensive and easy-to-use and has promising potential for analysis of OPC.

Abstract:
Investigating how pharmaceutical firms from emerging economies internationalize themselves to meet the knowledge- and investment-intensive challenges of pharmaceutical industry has become an inviting topic for both academia and industry. This paper explores the internationalization strategies and driving factors of Chinese pharmaceutical firms. Through applying text analytics, four internationalization patterns of Chinese pharmaceutical firms are identified, namely, (1) market seeking by the state-owned; (2) opportunity exploring by the emerging-private; (3) culture penetration by TCM firms; and (4) global integration by CROs. It shows that the internationalization of Chinese pharmaceutical firms is driven by three key factors: firm ownership, business scope and value chain positioning. This study attempts not only to provide empirical evidence of internationalization of Chinese pharmaceutical firms, but also to contribute to the field of study on corporate internationalization in the complex-system sector.

Abstract:
Information technology (IT) enables businesses to integrate information systems across entities without altering the firms’ legal boundaries. New forms of inter-firm dependence and governance mechanisms may arise, due to the explicit investments made in technology and systems for collaboration purposes. There is an important distinction between general and customized investments in inter-organizational information systems (IOS), because the specificity level in IT exhibits certain characteristics that accentuate both the risk and value of inter-firm trade. Several research calls were made to validate governance theories on IOS. Based on a literature review, this paper provides a synthesis and integration of transaction cost economics (TCE) and IOS literature regarding governance forms. The paper discusses why the specificity level of IOS plays a central role in modern collaboration between firms, and how vertical electronic coordination (VEC) represents a mechanism for electronic governance forms and presents an agenda for future research.

Abstract:
Digitalisation requirements are the challenge for tax firms in the 21st century. Reserved tasks should become more automated, communications should expand to digital channels and core competences should be expanded to include more consulting. Since digitisation and the necessary technology and its application are not among the core competences of tax consultancies, the transformation of services is slow. A survey of tax firm owners shows that the digitalisation of services and processes has only been implemented to a limited extent in the firms. Furthermore, the data shows that due to the lack of digital transformation, the majority of tax consultants are unable to offer new services to clients. This is attributed to the fact that the lack of internal knowledge management does not allow the transformation to take place in a structured framework and therefore many tax consultants are still in the planning phase, even though client requirements have been tending to be offered digital options in tax advice for some time. This paper deals with the need for internal knowledge management, which forms the basis for the necessary transformation. For this purpose, the knowledge areas that are necessary for comprehensive knowledge management are presented. In addition, the model of Büren et al. provides a framework for the development of coordinated knowledge management that can be adapted by tax consultancies. For this purpose, basic requirements are presented in a self-created integrated management approach as an example in which tax firms can start a knowledge management for digitalisation.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper investigates the heat transfer coefficient and the film cooling effectiveness in a turbine center frame (TCF). The TCF is a duct connecting the high-pressure turbine (HPT) to the low-pressure turbine (LPT) and is equipped with non-turning airfoils (struts). The TCF is operated in a product-representative 1.5-stage test turbine setup working under Mach-number-similarity. Upstream of the TCF, an unshrouded HPT is operated with four individually adjustable purge flow injections through the forward and aft cavities on the hub and tip of the rotor. The heat transfer coefficient and the purge film cooling effectiveness are measured on the hub and the non-turning struts of the aerodynamically aggressive TCF using infrared thermography and tailor-made heating foils. To further extend the film cooling investigation, the seed gas concentration technique, in conjunction with the heat-mass transfer analogy, is used as a second film cooling measurement technique. Seeding the HPT cavities with different foreign gases reveals every individual purge flow’s contribution to the global film cooling effectiveness in the TCF. Additionally, the seed gas technique extends the investigated area for film cooling to the optically inaccessible shroud of the TCF. The heat transfer in the TCF was found to be dominated by secondary flow features of the upstream HPT. Longitudinal streaks of alternating high and low heat transfer were found on the hub connected to the number and position of the upstream HPT vanes. A similar pattern was found in the film cooling effectiveness, where the film cooling streaks were situated between the high heat transfer streaks. The film cooling coverage on the shroud was found to be even, symmetric and superior to the hub cooling performance, with around 10% less usage of purge mass flow.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Risk for incidental take of sea turtles and sturgeon exists during hopper dredging operations throughout turtle and sturgeon habitats. Since 1992, draghead deflectors have been the main engineering tool used to minimize incidental hopper dredging takes of sea turtles and are also thought to reduce the chance of sturgeon impingement or entrainment. Although reduced, turtle takes still happen annually, and the draghead deflectors reduce dredging productivity, increase fuel usage, and increase costs of operations. As such, there remains a need to research alternative turtle avoidance measures. The non-US dredging industry has used various versions of an engineering control called tickler chains (TC) in lieu of deflectors. If effective, TC could lower dredging costs and increase production in comparison to deflectors. This technical report describes a pilot study where TC were used in lieu of deflectors at Fire Island Inlet, New Y0rk. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time since the early 1990s that hopper-dredging has occurred without draghead deflectors along the east coast. No takes were recorded during the pilot study; however, no research was done to determine if sea turtles or sturgeon interacted with the TC. Recommendations for future TC research are provided in this technical report.

Johansson, Eva, Elisabeth Ianke Mørkeseth, Monika Röthle, Berit Tofteland, Berit Zachrisen, and Kristin Fugelsnes. Verdier i barnehagen: Mellom ideal og realiteter. University of Stavanger, March 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.31265/usps.228.

Full text
