Chong, Wanling. "Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performance in Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/82809.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2013.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 86-87).
Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network is one of the largest public works projects undertaken by the Singapore government. This thesis summarizes and evaluates the performance of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) construction in Singapore's MRT network. Surface settlement induced by the tunneling process can cause damage to underground utilities and foundations and buildings and/or disrupt daily life by damaging roads and pavements, and is used in this thesis as a measure of performance. The influence of encountered geology and adopted construction methods (referring to the type of TBM used) on settlement is discussed. The dominant construction method on all four existing MRT lines involved the use of shield TBMs, with the main difference being the method of face support adopted. The North-South East-West (NS-EW) line employed largely compressed air as face support, while a move towards greater use of Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) was observed on the North-East line (NEL) and Circle Line (CCL). The use of EPB on the NEL resulted in 22 incidences of large, localized ground losses, which were of two types; 1. subsurface voids, or voids which formed above the tunnel face but were grouted before they could migrate to the surface, 2. surface sinkholes, or local depressions which were found by visual inspection to appear over the tunnels as the machine advanced. These large, localized ground losses usually occurred when tunneling through different weathering grades within a single formation or through mixed faces of different geological formations. The variability in ground conditions which resulted from these mixed weathering grades and mixed faces is a direct result of extensive tropical weathering of Singapore's soils, and poses a challenge to the performance of EPB machines during construction. The employment of slurry machines on the CCL was intended to mitigate some of the difficulties faced by EPB machines on the NEL, though with limited success. The use of slurry machines on the CCL resulted in the additional problem of slurry discharging to the surface and disrupting traffic. Given Singapore's plans to double the length of her rail network by 2030, the need to understand the impact of construction projects on adjacent structures and surface activities remains just as important, if not more so.

Abstract:
The prediction of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performances and the comprehension of the relationship between the geological, mechanical and structural features of a rock mass and the machine behaviour are fundamental in order to select the most effective tunnel construction methods and to estimate the condition of excavation in terms of time and economic costs of the infrastructure. The general purpose of this work is to carry out predictive models utilisable during the early stage of tunnel planning and realisation; for this purpose, many approaches have been considered. Simple and multiple, both linear and nonlinear, regression analyses have been performed in order to achieve an empirical equation able to estimate the principal TBM performance indices (ROP and FPI). In addition, Multiple Correspondence Analysis and clustering have been developed. A modified version of the Rock Engineering System has been performed and used to obtain a predictive model. This study focuses on the exploratory tunnel named “La Maddalena”, located in Northern Italy, Western Alps, where geological surveys data have been continuously performed during tunnel construction; this allowed the collection of a large amount of geological, geotechnical and TBM performance data.

Abstract:
A double case study applying action research methodology was conducted in two pharmaceutical preparation manufacturers in the Netherlands to improve their manufacturing systems by implementing time-based manufacturing (TBM) practices. Following the diagnosis phase, the situation of each Company was analysed and suitable improvement interventions were selected for implementation in the Case Companies. At the end of the action research project, semi-structured interviews were taken in each Company a year later, and the achieved results of the improvement programmes were collected and analysed. This research extends the existing theory of time-based competition and demonstrates that TBM practices apply also in the pharmaceutical preparation manufacturing industry. Furthermore, this study shows how to improve TBM practices and reduce the throughput time by providing the route for improvement and implementation. Although the first Case Company did not improve the core TBM practices and manufacturing performance, its infrastructure improved through the implementation of an ERP system and further enhancement of its quality management system, illustrating that the design of the infrastructure is a key factor to become a time-based competitor. The second Case Company succeeded to improve the 2 TBM practices and throughput processes resulting in the reduction of the order cycle time and increase of the delivery dependability. Based on the data of the two Case Companies, this study demonstrated the relationship between these two manufacturing performance parameters, which indicates that manufacturers may strive for both delivery speed and delivery reliability using the same improvement plan. Adopting TBM is a long journey of many years and needs a continuous improvement infrastructure.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
Trellis-Coded Modulation (TCM) is employed with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) to provide error correction coding with no expense in bandwidth. There are two common implementations of TCM, namely pragmatic TCM and Ungerboeck TCM. Both schemes employ Viterbi algorithms for decoding but have different code construction. This thesis investigates and compares the performance of pragmatic TCM and Ungerboeck TCM by implementing the Viterbi decoding algorithm for both schemes with 16-QAM and 64-QAM. Both pragmatic and Ungerboeck TCM with six memory elements are considered. Simulations were carried out for both pragmatic and Ungerboeck TCM to evaluate their respective performance. The simulations were done using Matlab software, and an additive white Gaussian noise channel was assumed. The objective was to ascertain that pragmatic TCM, with its reduced-complexity decoding, is more suitable to adaptive modulation than Ungerboeck TCM.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1995 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada
The remote sensing industry is experiencing an unprecedented rush of activity to deploy commercial and scientific satellites. NASA and its international partners are leading the scientific charge with The Earth Observation System (EOS) and the International Space Station Alpha (ISSA). Additionally, there are at least ten countries promoting scientific/commercial remote sensing satellite programs. Within the United States, commercial initiatives are being under taken by a number of companies including Computer Technology Associates, Inc., EarthWatch, Inc., Space Imaging, Inc., Orbital Imaging Corporation and TRW, Inc. This activity is due to factors including: technological advances which have lead to significant reductions in the costs to build and deploy satellites; an awareness of the importance of understanding human impact on the ecosystem; and a desire to collect and sell data some believe will be worth $1.5 billion (USD) per year within five years. The success and usefulness of these initiatives, both scientific and commercial, depends largely on the ease and cost of providing remotely sensed data to value added resellers and end-users. A number of these spacecraft will provide an interface directly to users. To provide these data to the largest possible user base, ground station equipment must be affordable and the data must be distributed in a timely manner (meaning seconds or minutes, not days) over commercial network and communications equipment. TSI TelSys, Inc. is developing ground station equipment that will perform both traditional telemetry processing and the bridging and routing functions required to seamlessly interface commercial local- and wide-area networks and satellite communication networks. These products are based on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) components and pipelined, multi-processing architectures. This paper describes TelSys’ product family and its envisioned use within a ground station.

Abstract:
In this study is an attempt was made to improve our understanding of rock cutting process by hard rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) and evaluate the impacts of rock mass properties on machine performance. To achieve these objectives, an extensive database on filed observations of TBM performance in various projects and rock mass conditions data has been established. This database includes the data from 10 different job sites with more 60 km of total length of bored tunnels. A set of new empirical performance prediction models have been developed with reasonably high degree of correlations by performing a series of multiple regression analysis. Also a new Rock Mass Adjustment factors for Colorado School of Mines (CSM) prognosis model has been de-rived from the statistical analysis. The accuracy of developed models and adjustment factors has been verified by comparing the observed data with estimations provided by NTNU and CSM models. A very close agreement has been obtained

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper is an ethnographic study of the social practices that make the creation processes of meanings and links with the Harley-Davidson brand visible by the riders that attended the rides of the H.O.G - Harley Owners Group - in São Paulo city between May 2009 and February 2011. I try to understand the dimensions of brand involvement by combining the participant observation techniques, interviews and image analysis. This thesis presents an analysis of the H.O.G. organization in São Paulo city and follows the movement of the riders in order to identify the relations that are formed among them and between the riders and the brand. Through the use of film images it is possible to identify the constitution of a frame of reference which inspires the performance of the riders who participate in weekly rides. In this universe the importance of the images is reinforced by the photographs, a common practice in the events and that helped to identify what is understood as Harley Style and the deriving category the harleyro. Belonging to the group is the result of the articulation of several elements that involve the aestheticization of the motorcycle and the rider. Some aspects chosen and shared by the group characterize a hegemonic masculinity that guides the behavior, discourse and the brand consumption experience. I finish this paper reflecting on the concept of brand and the links created with it.

Abstract:
Tom Cruise was one of the most financially successful stars of the 1980s and 1990s and remains an important Hollywood player. In his time at Paramount, he negotiated new deals which redefined how stars earned revenue from their films. Yet little substantial study has been made of him or his persona. Cruise came to prominence in the 1980s, an epoch which redefined the terms of masculinity, moving away from a particular martial ideal following American defeat in Vietnam. His persona addresses the consequent anxieties surrounding these significant social changes. In addition to this, his image can be understood within a psychoanalytic framework to be offering a 'compromise formation' to the difficulties of psychosexual development. Cruise appears to offers a challenge to the father, but in reality recedes from Oedipal threat. Chapter One examines the nascent Cruise star persona and its development across his films. The chapter provides a historical overview and contextualisation of the persona. Chapter Two explores how the persona offers a 'performative' model of masculinity based on a heroic martial ideal, as well as his positioning as an object of spectacle and the onscreen homoerotic relationships he enjoys. Chapter Three looks at the star's association with the racial 'other' and preoccupation with male friendships at the expense of heterosexual romance. Objectification through spectacle, which black characters and Cruise share in his films, indicate a symbolic shared powerlessness within the hegemony. Chapter Four argues that this lack of status is characterised by Cruise's struggle against male authority figures, which represent both corporate America and the punishing father. This relays the trauma of Oedipal struggle, which Cruise attempts to evade. Chapter Five looks in further depth at the Cruise persona's preoccupation with male bonds and lack of interest in women, both indicative of a regression from the phallic to the earlier anal/cannibalistic psycho-sexual stage, as he is unable to overcome the symbolic father . The thesis concludes by suggesting Cruise's persona is a compromise: it presents a triumphant young man who in reality is oppressed by patriarchal forces. This compromise is premised on youth and is threatened as Cruise ages, exaggerated by social changes within America. Biologically and socially, Cruise's persona is no longer tenable.

Thesis, University of Manchester, 2015. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/investigating-the-effect-of-oxide-texture-on-the-corrosion-performance-of-zirconium-alloys(c98f3395-4ee7-42c5-b9f3-2a55e7923c14).html.

Full text
Abstract:
This work was performed as part of the MUZIC-2 (Mechanical Understanding of Zirconium Corrosion) collaboration, established with the goal of understanding the mechanism of hydrogen pickup in zirconium alloys. Hydrogen pickup is one of the least understood and most significant degradation mechanisms affecting zirconium alloys in nuclear reactors. These alloys are used as cladding and structural materials in the reactor core, mainly due to their low thermal neutron absorption cross section and excellent corrosion resistance. This project aims to investigate the effect of oxide texture (i.e. the degree of preferred orientation) on the corrosion performance of zirconium alloys. The texture of the oxide is expected to affect the microstructural development of the oxide, the grain boundary distribution and the stress state. It is therefore considered to be one of the most important factors in determining how the corrosion process occurs, and why different alloys exhibit significantly different corrosion performance. It is hoped that this project will add to the current knowledge of the corrosion process, and in particular hydrogen pickup, so that the route of hydrogen through the protective oxide can be identified. This will lead to the development of a new generation of alloys that provide improved oxidation and hydrogen pickup performance, whilst maintaining the required mechanical properties. This work focuses on four zirconium alloys; Zircaloy-4, ZIRLO™, low-Sn ZIRLO™ and Zr-1.0Nb-0.1Fe. The alloys all have different chemical compositions and therefore exhibit different corrosion performance. The macrotexture of the oxide formed on different alloys was measured by glancing angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). A fibre texture was formed in all cases, with the (10-3) to (10-5) planes oriented parallel to the metal-oxide interface for the monoclinic phase. The major orientation was found to be independent of alloy chemistry, substrate orientation and oxidation conditions. The monoclinic texture strength was found to be weakened with increasing oxidation temperature, The major orientation of the tetragonal phase was also found to be a fibre texture, with the (001) planes oriented approximately parallel with the interface. Although significant variation from this texture component was observed. It is suggested that the main driving force for oxide texture development is the transformation stress induced by the Zr-ZrO2 transformation. The microtexture of the oxides was measured using two novel techniques, Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (TKD) and automated crystal orientation mapping with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The techniques revealed an oxide microstructure consisting of an outer layer of equiaxed grains with a large range of orientations and an inner layer consisting of well-aligned columnar monoclinic grains. This layer of equiaxed grains was observed to form again after the transition in corrosion kinetics. A large fraction of transformation twin boundaries were observed throughout the oxides. Some of these boundaries were observed to surround large monoclinic grains, providing evidence that the tetragonal grains from which they transformed had grown considerably larger than the critical grain size for stabilisation. Without the presence of Sn, larger monoclinic grains were observed to form with a greater degree of preferred orientation, and with a lower fraction of transformation twin boundaries than Sn-containing alloys. In addition, an increased number of well-oriented tetragonal grains was correlated with the presence of Sn. It is therefore concluded that a reduction in Sn will lead to the formation of an oxide microstructure that is more resistant to both oxidation and hydrogen pickup. An analysis of the crystallography and morphology of a ZrO phase present at the metal-oxide interface was also performed. Finally, the observations have been used to construct a model of the corrosion process.

Abstract:

The most widely used protocol for providing reliable service and congestion control in the Internet is the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). When the Internet is moving towards more use in mobile applications it is getting more important to know how TCP works for this purpose.

One of the technologies used for mobile Internet is the Enhanced General Packet Radio Service (EGPRS) extension to the popular GSM system. This thesis presents a low-level analysis of TCP performance in an EGPRS system and an overview of existing TCP, GSM and EGPRS technologies.

The bottleneck in an EGPRS system is the wireless link – the connection between the mobile phone and the GSM base station. The data transfer over the wireless link is mainly managed by the complex RLC/MAC protocol.

In this thesis, simulations were made to identify some problems with running TCP and RLC/MAC together. The simulations were made using existing EGPRS testing software together with a new TCP module. The simulation software is also briefly described in the thesis.

Additionaly, some suggestions are given in order to enhance performance, both by changing the EGPRS system and by modifying the TCP algorithms and parameters.

Abstract:
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited
The purpose of this thesis is threefold. Firstly, to attempt to provide validity for the two-sided matching process; secondly, analyze FITREP attributes to determine their suitability for a weighted criteria evaluation system and; thirdly, compare the USMC promotion and assignment process with contemporary human resource management practices. Using data from the USMC Officer Accession Career file (MCCOAC), a logit model is used to estimate the effects of TBS preference and other officer characteristics on retention to the seven year mark. Findings indicate that there was little difference in the probability of retention throughout most preference levels except for the bottom sixth. Using USMC FITREP data, an ordinary least squares model is used to estimate the effects of rank and MOS on FITREP scores across all attributes. Multiple comparison tests demonstrated that there are statistical differences at the 0.05 level between the means of the MOSs. Additionally, reporting creep is continuing across all attributes. Surveys were also conducted. The first survey indicated that USMC officers believe the FITREP attributes were not all equally important within, and across each MOS - although the USMC assesses them as such. The second survey indicated that the USMC promotion and assignment process can be strengthened through a clearly defined HRM plan that extends beyond 'faces' and 'places', and provides very clear links to the organizational strategy. Based on the findings it is recommended that the USMC review its HRM processes and conduct further analyses on the FITREP data for: (1) correlation, (2) longitudinal analysis as a predictor for success and, (3) relevance and relationship to MOS characteristics, position descriptions, and organizational strategy.

Hon, Lenny Kwok-Ming. "Performance evaluation of the movable-slot TDM protocol and its application in metropolitan area networks." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26706.

Full text
Abstract:
Movable-slot time-division multiplexing (MSTDM) is a medium access control protocol for the integration of voice and data in local area networks. In this thesis, the performance of this protocol is evaluated through mathematical analysis and simulation. Its application in metropolitan area networks is also studied. For the performance evaluation, a non-pre-emptive priority queuing model is first proposed for analysing the mean data delay characteristic of the slotted non-persistent carrier-sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) protocol. Then this analytical approach is extended to the slotted MSTDM protocol with non-persistent data packet transmission, and its mean data delay performance is obtained. Numerical results from the analysis are shown and discussed. Moreover, simulation study of the MSTDM protocol is performed. Through the simulation results, the effects of this protocol on the general delay performances of voice and data are discussed. It is found that if first voice packets, which are generated at the beginning of talkspurts, are given a shorter retransmission delay than data packets, the channel-acquisition delay for voice sources can be reduced without sacrificing the data delay performance significantly. The simulation results are also used to verify the analytical results. As the comparisons show, the accuracy of the analysis is high although it is based on a simple approximate model. For the application of MSTDM in metropolitan area networks, a scheme which alleviates the distance and transmission rate constraints associated with this protocol is described. The approach is to divide the stations in a large area into regional groups, each operating in a different frequency band. Each group forms a sub-network which is part of the metropolitan area network. An access protocol is proposed for interconnecting these sub-networks. Also an analysis which finds the optimum number of sub-networks for interconnection is presented. The criterion is to minimize the mean data delay for communications in a sub-network.

Nixon, Jodi L. "Cognitive performance in TBI children: : examining the relationship between lesion volume and psychometric testing results." Virtual Press, 2001. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1213152.

Abstract:
The relationship between lesion volume in children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and IQ scores was investigated in this study. Participants included eight children between the ages of 8-12 years with primarily right hemisphere TBIs and 16 normals who were matched based on age and gender. Archival data employing the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - III (WISC-III) scores was the source of Verbal IQ (VIQ), Performance IQ (PIQ), and Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) scores. Severity of injury was determined using the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) which was contained in the same archival database. Lesion volume was determined utilizing National Institute of Health (NIH) Image (Version 1.76) and magnetic resonance imaging scans of the injured children. The area of the lesion was outlined, using the freehand line tool, on successive slices, summed, and multiplied by the corresponding acquisition slice gap to obtain a measure of total volume. Results indicated that lesion volume does not explain a significant portion of the variance associated with TBI. Severely injured children had lower IQs than children with mild or no injury. Additionally, children with right hemisphere injuries had significantly lower VIQ, PIQ, and FSIQ scores than normals. Qualitative analyses revealed that lesion volume appears to be related to the change in IQ scores during recovery. Typically, children with larger lesions (e.g., more severe injury) had greater functional losses and had greater gains to make; therefore, they demonstrated greater changes in IQ score as compared to less severely injured children. Predicting the area of deficit based upon lesion location yielded results congruent with chance. Results appear to reinforce the complexity of TBI; no single piece of data explains a significant portion of the variance associated with this phenomenon. Future research should strive toExamine and control for the numerous factors associated with TBI (e.g., age, lesion location, lesion volume, premorbid abilities, parental education, GCS score, gender, use of standard test battery, and many others) within a single study. Efforts to provide optimal treatment and recovery of TBI patients could be informed by such research.

Abstract:
An effective tool used by planners and policy makers in public health, such as Center for Disease Control (CDC), to curtail spread of infectious diseases over a given population is contagion diffusion simulations. These simulations model the relevant characteristics of the population (age, gender, income etc.) and the disease (attack rate, etc.) and compute the spread under various configuration and plausible intervention strategies (such as vaccinations, school closure, etc.). Hence, the model and the computation form a complex agent based system and are highly compute and resource intensive. In this work, we design a benchmark consisting of several kernels which capture the essential compute, communication, and data access patterns for such applications. For each kernel, the benchmark provides different evaluation strategies. The goal is to (a) derive alternative implementations for computing the contagion by combining different implementation of the kernels, and (b) evaluate which combination of implementation, runtime, and hardware is most effective in running large scale contagion diffusion simulations. Our proposed benchmark is designed using C++ generic programming primitives and lifting sequential strategies for parallel computations. Together, these lead to a succinct description of the benchmark and significant code reuse when deriving strategies for new hardware. For the benchmark to be effective, this aspect is crucial, because the potential combination of hardware and runtime are growing rapidly thereby making infeasible to write optimized strategy for the complete contagion diffusion from ground up for each compute system.

Abstract:
Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) instruments need to be improved in order to satisfy the demands of trends in many fields that require analytical tools that can map samples with both excellent resolution and high-sensitivity chemical information, but also with shorter time of analysis. The objectives of this thesis are: investigate the enhancement of the mass resolution of double focusing mass spectrometers by replacing the standard spherical sector with a novel spheroid geometry which has better focusing properties, and to investigate the reduction of the time of analysis in imaging SIMS by the proof-of-concept of the SIMS multi-ion- beam system.A comparison of the main focusing properties of the spherical sector, the spheroid geometry and a hybrid spheroid geometry, was made using the SIMION software. A comparison in a Nier-Johnson configuration between the spherical sector and the spheroid, showed that the beam presents a rotation of 90° at the exit of the magnet harming the mass resolution in the spheroid configuration. By adding an electrostatic element that can rotate the beam 90° the performance of the mass spectrometer could be improved. However, a comparison of the performances between the spherical and hybrid sectors simulated in a Mattauch-Herzog configuration, showed that when the double focusing condition is properly satisfied, better mass resolution could be achieved with the spheroid geometry.A multi-ion-beam system was investigated for SIMS analysis. A simulation through the secondary optics of a Cameca IMS XF showed successful transmission of nine beams through the optics resulting in nine well focussed spots on the multi channel plate (MCP) detector. The proof-of-concept was completed experimentally in the Cameca IMS 6F, where a multi-hole aperture was mounted in the primary column generating 9 and 16 beams of sizes between 4 μm to 10 μm. Images of an AlCu grid were obtained when t the multi-ion-beam system was scanned over the sample. These results showed that the multi-ion-beam system is a feasible technique for imaging SIMS and by optimizing the design multi-nano-ion-beams will be a solution for reducing drastically the time of analysis

Abstract:
Thanks to digital technology, many devices have appeared in classrooms and offer the possibility of multiplying teaching aids in the teaching / learning process. The interactive whiteboard (TBI / TNI) is one of them. Thus, it seems judicious to question the factors that influence the effect of such a device on school performance, given the contradictory results of scientific studies on the subject. This doctoral research work is a mixed research, combining both quantitative and qualitative data. As a result of the literature review, she tries to answer the following question: What are the factors that influence the impact of the use of the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) on student performance?Prior to the implementation of experimental research, initial assumptions assumed that in an interactive whiteboard-mediated teaching / learning process, students' academic performance is influenced by the student's learning style of learning. on the one hand, and on the other, that it is a function of their degree of motivation with regard to the interactive whiteboard. In order to compare these above-mentioned hypotheses with the reality on the ground, a two-phase experimental procedure consisting of a teaching / learning situation without the interactive whiteboard and then with the interactive whiteboard was conducted in order to measure student academic performance. To collect the data, the tools that are the questionnaire, a test of identification of the learning style according to the model VAK (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic), the semi-directed individual interviews, a scale of motivation and observations in situ have been used.Following the analysis of the results obtained from the nonparametric alternatives of the Khi2 test and Student's t test for paired samples, significant differences are observed in the performance of visual learning style students, unlike students with other major learning styles. The impact of the intervention of the whiteboard in the teaching-learning process would also depend on the student's gender and motivation towards the whiteboard. Indeed, we find that male students and students with a self-determined motivation for the technological tool have seen their performance increase significantly

Abstract:
Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB is interested in digitizing their current work processes. Therefore, the reason for this study is to examine if AR performs better than paper as an instruction method for operators at Siemens in Trollhättan. In order to answer the question "How well does Augmented Reality (AR) technology perform compared to physical papers as an instruction method for operators in a production environment?", two qualitative methods have been applied. Data was collected by using observations and semi-structured interviews for the analysis of this study. Our choice of theoretical framework was not only applied for evaluating the performance, but also the operators' willingness to adopt AR as a form of instruction method. The findings from the results show that AR performs better as an instruction method and that the operators had a positive attitude when using AR. However, it is still unclear how well this technology will be accepted. This is mainly due to the fact that future improvements still need to be made to the hardware and the lack of customized applications for the operators' needs.

Abstract:
Purpose To determine sustainable Resource Based View drivers (RBV) (i.e. resources, capabilities) and motivation for the successful (i.e. positive Financial (FP) / Social Performance (SP)) implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the strategies of top performing companies in regards to CSR. In addition to find out how these drivers are being nourished, developed and utilized in order to contribute to the sustainable development in companies. Design/ Methodology/ Approach Interviews are held with CSR-managers from top performing companies based on their engagement and performance in CSR. In addition, their Corporate Responsibility (CR) reports are observed in order to apply triangulation on the company’s engagement in CSR. Furthermore shall reports by third party organizations be observed to get multiple perspectives on the concept of CSR and Sustainability? Lastly an exclusive guest lecture at Linnaeus University is attended which provided insight on corporate partnership in regards to CSR from the point of view of a charitable organization. Findings The most important non-financial drivers of CSR and Sustainability are; knowledge flow, capabilities and competence. Knowledge can be acquired through active engagement with all the company’s stakeholders, especially by collaborating with universities and for example charitable organizations. Companies have invested in the training of top level management in their understanding of the importance of CSR and Sustainability. This is because the top level management is seen as the driving and deciding force within the company to engage in CSR and Sustainability. Some companies have invested research in the understanding of their stakeholders’ perceptions on Sustainability issues which they deem as most important. Delimitations/ Limitations This research investigates the non-financial drivers (i.e. sources and antecedents) of CSR and Suitability in order to invest in and develop the drivers with the purpose of further developing Sustainability. This research is primarily focussed on Swedish companies as they seem to be further advanced in this subject due to for example legislation and the fact that Sweden is one of the most prosperous countries in the world. The purpose of this research is not to generalize the findings, but to provide insight so other companies could learn and develop themselves further in their pursuit for Sustainability.  Implications In order to develop Sustainability further companies need to create tighter collaborations with especially universities as the managers and business leaders for the future, but also other employees, are the students of today. Especially business students complain about the way their subject is being taught as it fails to thoroughly address current and future business problems. Furthermore the concept of Sustainability should be taught not only at universities but at high schools as well, because the society as a whole needs to collaborate to deal with the mega forces that await us in the not too distant future.  Originality/ Value CSR finds itself in a cross-section in academic literature between different affecting disciplines. By combining the different disciplines the authors want to contribute to sustainable development and competitive advantage in CSR-strategies by examining top performing companies who are (perceived to be) well advanced in this subject. Previous research has primarily focussed on proving the relationship between implementing CSR and positive Financial Performance (FP) as the driver of CSR. Much less have other antecedents to CSR been investigated with purpose of further improving sustainable development.

Abstract:
Channel coding has been largely used for the purpose of improving error performance on a communications system. Typical methods based on added redundancy allow for error detection and correction, this improvement however comes at a cost of bandwidth. This thesis focuses on channel coding for the bandwidth-limited channel where no bandwidth expansion is allowed. We first discuss the idea of coding for the bandwidth-limited channel as seen from the signal space point of view where the purpose of coding is to maximize the Euclidian distance between constellation points without increasing the total signal power and under the condition that no extra bits can be added. We then see the problem from another angle and identify the tradeoffs related to bandwidth and error performance. This thesis intends to find a simple way of achieving an improvement in error performance for the bandwidth-limited channel without the use of lattice codes or trellis-coded modulation. The proposed system is based on convolutional coding followed by multilevel transmission. It achieved a coding gain of 2 dB on Eb/No or equivalently, a coding gain of approximately 2.7 dB on SNRnorm without increase in bandwidth. This coding gain is better than that obtained by a more sophisticated lattice code Gosset E8 at the same error rate.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) could explain the relationship between teacher's acceptance of an online teacher professional development course and their continuance intentions regarding online teacher professional development (oTPD). This study focused on the perceptions of the teachers as opposed to the design or implementation of oTPD. The participants (N=517) were mostly teachers (88.8%) enrolled in a statewide online course to provide classroom teachers with the latest knowledge of research-based instructional reading strategies. The course was offered over a 10-14 week period during the Spring 2006 semester through a public state university. Structural equation modeling was used to create a path analytic model extending the TAM to include two additional constructs: sociability and social presence. In addition, gains in instructional reading strategies knowledge (performance) were examined. Using this expanded version of the TAM, the study examined the causal relationships between sociability, social presence, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, continuance intention, and gains. Online distance education research has indicated that social presence can influence post-secondary students' attitude and persistence within a web-based course. However a paucity of research exists on how technology acceptance and social presence impacts teachers within an online teacher professional development setting. Path analysis, univariate analysis of variance, and independent t-tests in SPSS v12.0 for Windows were used to analyze the data. The results suggest that the hypothesized extended model was a good fit. The model did indicate that both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness were determinants of teachers' intent to continue using oTPD for future professional development needs.

Woollett, Katherine. "Multiple sports concussion in male rugby players : a neurocognitive and neuroimaging study." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/30302.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: Following a sport related concussion (SRC) visible symptoms generally dissipate in 7-10 days post-injury. However, little is known about the cumulative effects of SRCs both in terms of structural damage to the white matter of the brain and neurocognitive performance. To address this issue, the relationship between the number of SRCs (frequency), axonal white matter (WM) damage and neurocognitive performance was examined. There were three predictions. First, increases in SRC frequency will be associated with decreases in performance on neurocognitive tests. Second, the frequency of SRC will be associated with axonal injury measured three WM tracts: the corpus callosum, the fronto-occipital fasciculus and the inferior longitudinal fasciculus. Third, less accurate and slower performance on a response inhibition task (STOP-IT) will be associated with greater axonal injury. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational design was utilised. Participants were rugby players with a history of SRC, rugby players with no history of SRC and control athletes (N=40) who completed a neurocognitive test battery and had a DTI brain scan. The neurocognitive battery consisted of the following standardised tests: Speed and Capacity of Language Processing Test, CogState Electronic Battery, Stroop Colour and Word Test, Controlled Oral Word Association Test, the Trail Making Test and the experimental test STOP-IT Electronic Test. White matter axonal injury was measured by DTI using fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) metrics. The DTI data was processed using FSL to extract FA and MD DTI metrics in three a-priori regions of interest. Results: Spearman’s correlation analyses did not find significant associations between SRC frequency and neurocognitive performance on the FAS (rs=0.053, 95% CI [-0.27, 0.36]), TMT-A (rs=0.058, 95% CI [-0.26, 0.37]), TMT-B (rs= -0.046, 95% CI [-0.27, 0.36]) and the Stroop Interference (rs= -0.25, 95% CI [-0.07, 0.52]). Similarly, no significant Spearman’s correlations were found between SRC frequency and the computerised neurocognitive tests STOP-IT-SSRT (rs= -0.04, 95% CI [-0.28, 0.35])), STOP-IT–Accuracy (rs= -0.05, 95% CI [-0.27, 0.36]), CogState Detection subtest (rs= -0.15, 95% CI [-0.17, 0.44]), CogState Identification subtest (rs= -0.065, 95% CI [-0.26, 0.37]), CogState One card learning subtest (rs= 0.24, 95% CI [-0.08, 0.52]) or the CogState One back task subtest (rs= 0.06, 95% CI [-0.26, 0.37]). In terms of the DTI data there were no significant associations between SRC frequency and axonal injury measured by FA values in the CC (rs= 0.005, 95% CI [-0.31, 0.32]), ILF (rs= 0.028, 95% CI [-0.29, 0.34]) or FOF (rs= -0.022, 95% CI [-0.30, 0.33]). The same was pattern was found for MD values in the CC (rs= 0.081, 95% CI [-0.24, 0.39]), ILF (rs= -0.16, 95% CI [-0.16, 0.45]) or FOF (rs= -0.15, 95% CI [-0.17, 0.44]) Finally, there were no significant Spearman’s correlations between axonal injury FA values and the STOP-IT SSRT in any of the ROIs: CC (rs= 0.005, 95% CI [-0.31, 0.32]), ILF (rs= 0.028, 95% CI [-0.29, 0.34]) or FOF (rs= -0.022, 95% CI [-0.30, 0.33]). Equally, there were no significant correlations between MD values STOP-IT SSRT in the CC (rs= -0.028, 95% CI [-0.29, 0.34]), ILF (rs= -0.16, 95% CI [-0.16, 0.45]) or FOF (rs= -0.15, 95% CI [-0.17, 0.44]). Likewise, there were no significant Spearman’s correlations between accuracy on the STOP-IT and FA values and in any of the ROIs: CC (rs= 0.19, 95% CI [-0.13, 0.48]), ILF (rs= -0.045, 95% CI [-0.27, 0.35]) and FOF (rs= -0.032, 95% CI [-0.29, 0.34]), or MD values in the CC (rs= -0.11, 95% CI [-0.21, 0.41]), ILF (rs= 0.017, 95% CI [-0.30, 0.33]) or FOF (rs= 0.082, 95% CI [-0.24, 0.39]). This study did not find support for the hypothesis that cumulative SRCs are associated with poorer performance on neurocognitive tests or with axonal injury as measured by FA and MD DTI metrics. Conclusion: The null findings suggest that there are no cumulative effects of SRCs. The current findings are inconsistent with previous cross-sectional research that indicates that there are long-term changes to diffusivity measures present after single SRCs as well as cumulative effects in contact sport athletes. Likewise they are at odds with evidence suggesting that after three SRCs neurocognitive performance can be affected. The study needs to be extended to include a larger sample to ensure the results are not due to low statistical power.

Abstract:
In 2009 the Federal Highway Administration published a report regarding a Focus States Initiative that had been conducted with 11 states to discuss the development of national Traffic Incident Management (TIM) standards. Performance measures were defined, and a national TIM dashboard created, but very little data has been added to the dashboard since. In this research study, performance measures of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) TIM program were analyzed. Data availability was first assessed to determine whether these performance measures could be calculated. It was determined that crash response data available from the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) could be used to calculate the performance measures of Incident Management Teams (IMT) and UHP units; however, roadway clearance data were missing. UHP personnel agreed to collect additional data regarding crash roadway clearance for six months of the study. Performance measures of response time (RT), roadway clearance time (RCT), and incident clearance time (ICT) were calculated for responding units at 168 crashes. Using the crash response data from UHP and traffic speed, travel time, and volume data from UDOT databases, 83 of the 163 crashes that met additional criteria were evaluated to determine the volume of traffic affected (AV) by each incident and the associated user cost (EUC). Statistical analyses to determine relationships between different measures such as RT, RCT, ICT, AV, and EUC were conducted to assist UDOT in optimizing the allocation of their IMT resources.

Abstract:
Knowledge Management System (KMS) is a necessary concept as knowledge possessed by each individual employee is an intellectual property asset that will provide benefits for any organization. In a company, in terms of KMS, employees’ performance holds an important role in helping run the business of the company becoming sustainable and successful. Therefore, the measurement of employees’ performance based on a balanced scorecard is needed to understand the current business situation. This research helped focus on the perception between the KMS and employee’s performance based on a balanced scorecard (BSC) regarding a financial perspective, customer perspective, internal business process perspective, and learning & growth perspective. A survey was conducted at PT. Vale Indonesia Tbk (Vale) to ascertain these perspectives and perceptions of employees regarding performance based on a BSC. These perception data were analyzed, and conclusions were drawn regarding hypotheses. The findings section of this thesis shows the results in details. The results of the survey showed that the employees had a good perception of the value and benefits of KMS as measured with the BSC with the exception of the financial aspect. The interpretation of the results created recommendations to further implement KMS, and to improve employees’ performance at Vale.

Zhao, Yueqin. "A Downtown Space Reservation System: Its Design and Evaluation." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29021.

Abstract:
This research explores the feasibility of providing innovative and effective solutions for traffic congestion. The design of reservation systems is being considered as an alternative and/or complementary travel demand management (TDM) strategy. A reservation indicates that a user will follow a booking procedure defined by the reservation system before traveling so as to obtain the right to access a facility or resource. In this research, the reservation system is introduced for a cordon-based downtown road network, hereafter called the Downtown Space Reservation System (DSRS). The research is executed in three steps. In the first step, the DSRS is developed using classic optimization techniques in conjunction with an artificial intelligence technology. The development of this system is the foundation of the entire research, and the second and third steps build upon it. In the second step, traffic simulation models are executed so as to assess the impact of the DSRS on a hypothetical transportation road network. A simulation model provides various transportation measures and helps the decision maker analyze the system from a transportation perspective. In this step, multiple simulation runs (demand scenarios) are conducted and performance insights are generated. However, additional performance measurement and system design issues need to be addressed beyond the simulation paradigm. First, it is not the absolute representation of performance that matters, but the concept of relative performance that is important. Moreover, a simulation does not directly demonstrate how key performance measures interact with each other, which is critical when trying to understand a system structure. To address these issues, in the third step, a comprehensive performance measurement framework has been applied. An analytical technique for measuring the relative efficiency of organizational units, or in this case, demand scenarios called network Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), is used. The network model combines the perspectives of the transportation service provider, the user and the community, who are the major stakeholders in the transportation system. This framework enables the decision maker to gain an in-depth appreciation of the system design and performance measurement issues.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between firm value and performance and executive remuneration. In general, the literature suggests that firms with executive higher remuneration tend to have better value and performance in comparison with companies with lower remuneration. We analyze a unique Brazilian database to test this hypothesis. The analysis of 420 Brazilian companies from 2002 to 2009 indicates a positive and significant relation between executive remuneration and firm value (price-to-book), suggesting that companies that pay better executive remuneration have higher value. On the other hand, there is no significant relation between executive remuneration and operational performance (ROA and sales growth).

Danzinger, Georg, and Katharina Reichmann. "How does the CSR engagement of CEO’s relate to TBL performance under the condition of a decentralized organizational structure? : An example of the largest German stock-listed corporations." Thesis, Högskolan Kristianstad, Fakulteten för ekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hkr:diva-19604.

Abstract:
Recently there has been a broad discussion with regards to Corporate Social Responsibility, its general purpose, and how it is publicly disclosed. The responsibilities for the engagement in CSR activities have been primarily vested with the CEO of organizations. Previous studies suggested an existing link between CEO’s CSR Engagement and TBL Performance. The dissertation aimed to explore the relationship between the CEO’s CSR Engagement and TBL Performance and to investigate the role of a decentralized organizational structure in this relation. A quantitative research approach in the form of archival data was carried out to measure CEO CSR Engagement and Decentralization of the 50 largest German stock-listed corporations by analyzing annual financial reports. Also, to measure total TBL Performance, media disclosure of the 50 largest German stock-listed corporations in the German newspaper Handelsblatt was analyzed. The results of the study showed that increased levels of the aspect Stakeholder Responsibility (a component of CEO CSR Engagement) positively impacted TBL Performance. Also, the study results indicated that a low level of Decentralization positively moderated the relationship between the aspect External Risk and Engagement (a component of CEO CSR Engagement) and TBL Performance. The dissertation extends already existing CEO leadership literature and measures organizational sustainability performance based on the concept of the Triple Bottom Line. Also, the application of organizational structure of Decentralization as a moderator between CEO CSR Engagement and TBL Performance contributes to already existing literature. By applying factor analysis to the CEO CSR related aspects to objectify the gathered data, this dissertation contributes methodologically.
