Au Bénin des efforts scientifiques sont consentis pour la connaissance de la diversité végétale. Cleome gynandra L. (Caya blanc, Sabo en Adja, Akaya en Mahi et Semboué en Peulh) de la famille des Capparaceaes fait l'objet de cette étude à travers sa connaissance agromorphologique. La méthodologie utilisée passe par des observations et prélèvement dans la nature et jardins de case. Dix (10) pieds de la plante ont été collectés dans chaque zone climatique et un (1) pied dans le jardin botanique de l’Université d’Abomey-Calavi. En plus des observations sur la plante complète, il est procédé à l’achat des graines de C. gynandra. Des variables quantitatives (hauteur de la plante, nombre de fruits par pied, longueur et diamètre des fruits, celle des pédoncules, nombre de ramification) et variables qualitatives (couleur, pilosité de la tige, couleur des fruits et graines et forme des feuilles) ont été observées, mesurées et calculées. Le traitement des variables a été possible par usage du logiciel XLSTAT- pro Version 2008. 1.01. Les relations entre variables ont été étudiées grâce à la matrice de corrélation de Pearson (n). Une Analyse en Composante Principale (ACP), a permis de ressortir si des différences significatives à un taux de 0,05 existent entre les variétés pour les caractères étudiés. L'étude a mis en évidence une grande variabilité agromorphologique dans les trois zones climatiques du Bénin par des caractères discriminant. Des différences significatives ont été observées entre les variables des trois zones climatiques d'une part et entre les individus issus des jardins de case et ceux collectés dans la nature d'autre part. L’ACP a mis en évidence trois grands ensembles. La classification ascendante hiérarchisée montre (8) ensembles qui tiennent compte des similarités et les observations.Mots clés : Cleome gynandra L, Akaya, variété, caractères, légume feuille et République du Bénin.
English Title: Morphological characterization of Cleome gynandra L. in Benin
In Benin, scientific efforts are being made for knowledge of plant diversity. Cleome gynandra L. (White Caya, Sabo in Adja, Akaya in Mahi and Semboué in Peulh) of the family Capparaceae is the subject of this study through its agromorphological knowledge. The methodology used involves observations and sampling in the nature and house gardens. Ten (10) feet of the plant were collected in each climatic zone and one (1) foot in the botanical garden of the University of Abomey-Calavi. In addition to the observations on the whole plant, the seeds of C. gynandra are purchased. Quantitative variables (plant height, number of fruits per foot, fruit length and diameter, peduncles, number of branching) and qualitative variables (color, stem hair, fruit and seed color and leaf forms) were observed, measured and calculated. Variable processing was possible using the XLSTAT-pro Version 2008 software. 1.01. Relationships between variables were studied using the Pearson correlation matrix (n). A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed if significant differences at a rate of 0.05 exist between the varieties for the characters studied. The study revealed a large agromorphologicalvariability in the three climatic zones of Benin by discriminating characters. Significant differences were observed between the variables of the three climatic zones on the one hand and between the individuals from the house gardens and those collected in the wild on the other hand. The CPA has highlighted three major groups. Dans louest du Niger, Leptadenia hastata tend a occuper une place importante surtout au niveau des plateaux. Ses multiples fonctions alimentaires, medicinales et economiques font quelle est tres sollicitee par les populations rurales. Mais leffet conjugue des actions anthropiques et des aleas climatiques compromet la survie de cette espece en hypothequant les principales fonctions vitales des ressources naturelles pour les populations locales. Aussi assiste-t-on de plus en plus a une faible regeneration de lespece, les jeunes pieds sont devenus tres rares, la production des semences est limitee. Cette etude conduite dans le jardin botanique de la Faculte des Sciences et Techniques (FAST) de lUniversite Abdou Moumouni de Niamey a pour objectif devaluer la dynamique de la croissance morphologique de lespece. Dans des pots en plastique rempli chacun du substrat constitue de 2/3 de sable pour 1/3 de fumier avec un apport deau journalier, deux lots de graines ont ete ensemences: des graines conservees a la temperature ambiante en laboratoire pendant deux mois (graines recentes) et des graines conservees a la temperature ambiante en laboratoire pendant seize mois (graines âgees). Le taux de germination et de levee ont ete calcules. Les aspects morphologiques de la croissance des plantules ont ete suivis pendant 50 jours. Le taux de germination pour les graines recentes et âgees est respectivement de 97,5% et 96,66%, celui de levee est aussi respectivement de 95,72% et 95,68%. A un mois, les graines âgees ont enregistrees une hauteur des tiges moyenne de 36,68 cm plus elevee que ceux des graines recentes (23,02 cm). Mais au 50eme jour il ny a pas eu de difference significative entre les hauteurs de deux types de graines. De meme, jusqu a la fin de lexperience, il ny a pas eu de difference significative au niveau du diametre au collet, du nombre de feuille et du nombre de ramifications des tiges. La croissance tres rapide de lespece lui confere laptitude detre utilisee dans les programmes de reboisement et de restauration des sols degrades apres seulement 50 jours en pepiniere.

Here we show by western blotting that transcriptionally active isoforms of p63 (p63α and p63γ) induce the phosphorylation of human 2N4R tau at the tau-1/AT8 epitope in HEK293a cells; a phospho-epitope increased in Alzheimer's disease. Confocal microscopy shows that tau and p63α are spatially separated intracellularly. Tau was found in the cytoskeletal compartment, whilst p63α was located in the nucleus, indicating that the effects of p63 on tau phosphorylation are indirectly mediated. Tau phosphorylation occurred independently of the known tau kinases, protein kinase C delta (PKCδ), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38), glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3), v-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homolog (AKT) and cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) and the tau protein phosphatases (PP), PP1 and PP2A-Aα/β. Considering that p63 and tau are both associated with developmental processes, these findings have ramifications for neuronal development and synaptic plasticity and also neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies.

PORTAL Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies enters its fourth year with the journal’s first special Chinese-language issue. Organised under the rubric of ‘The Revival of Chinese Cultural Nationalism,’ the issue has been guest edited by Dr Yingjie Guo of the Institute for International Studies, University of Technology Sydney, and features the work of scholars based in China and Australia. As Guo says in his introductory essay to the special issue, debates over cultural nationalism in China have been on the rise since the events in Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989; indeed, the post-Tiananmen era in China may be witnessing what Guo calls an unparalleled cultural-political movement in the country’s history. The various contributors to this special issue explore the ramifications and manifestations of that broad cultural-political movement in film production, television drama, literary texts, cultural essays, regional entrepreneurship, and contemporary debates on nationalism and liberalism. A crise desencadeada pela difusão do Vírus SARS-CoV-2 impactou de maneira significativa não somente as relações sociais, mas também as decisões políticas no Brasil em múltiplas escalas. Nesse contexto, desde o mês de março do ano de 2020 foram sugeridas medidas para conter o avanço da COVID-19 no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, as quais resultaram em ramificações e debates acerca dos desdobramentos da doença nos indicadores econômicos, principalmente no saldo de empregos. A partir desse contexto elencamos o objetivo geral do trabalho, o qual busca analisar a estrutura do emprego formal no estado do Rio Grande do Sul em dois contextos: o primeiro, denominado de pré-pandêmico (2010 a 2019) e, o segundo, de pandêmico (janeiro a dezembro de 2020). No que tange à metodologia, foram utilizadas duas bases de dados: o Cadastro Geral de Empregados e Desempregados (CAGED) tanto na escala nacional como estadual e a Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD), as quais possibilitaram observar o comportamento da taxa de desocupação no recorte temporal de 2010 a 2020. Como resultados, podemos compreender que os impactos econômicos da pandemia representam um agravamento de uma crise já existente no Brasil e no Rio Grande do Sul, fruto de uma série de transformações no mundo do trabalho brasileiro dos últimos 10 anos. FAR BEYOND THE PANDEMIC: THE HISTORIC CRISIS IN THE FORMAL JOB MARKET AND THE IMPACTS OF COVID-19 ON EMPLOYMENTS IN RIO GRANDE DO SUL Abstract: The crisis unleashed by the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus has significantly impacted not only in social relations, but also the political decisions in Brazil on multiple scales. In this context, since march of 2020 measures have been suggested to contain the advance of COVID-19 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which resulted in ramifications and debates about the unfolding of the disease in the economic indicators, mainly in the balance of employments. From that context we listed the main goal of the work, which seeks to analyze the structure of formal employment in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in two contexts: the first, called pre-pandemic (2010 to 2019), and the second, of pandemic (january to december of 2020). Regarding the methodology, two databases were used: the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (CAGED) at both national and state scales and the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), which made it possible to observe the behavior of the unemployment rate in the time frame of 2010 to 2020. As results, we can understand that the economic impacts of the pandemic represent an aggravation of a crisis that already exists in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul, the result of a series of transformations in the world of the brazilian work in the last 10 years. AU-DELÀ DE LA PANDÉMIE: LA CRISE HISTORIQUE DU MARCHÉ DU TRAVAIL FORMEL ET LES IMPACTS DU COVID-19 SUR LES EMPLOIS DANS LE RIO GRANDE DO SUL Résumé: La crise déclenchée par la propagation du virus SRAS-CoV-2 a eu un impact significatif non seulement sur les relations sociales, mais aussi sur les décisions politiques au Brésil à plusieurs échelles. Dans ce contexte, depuis mars 2020, des mesures ont été suggérées pour contenir les progrès du COVID-19 dans l'état du Rio Grande do Sul, ce qui a entraîné des ramifications et des débats sur les conséquences de la maladie sur les indicateurs économiques, principalement dans la balance d'emplois. Le pétrole est à la base du développement de notre société moderne, offrant accès à une source d'énergie abondante, bon marché et facilement transportable. Il est utilisé aussi bien pour la production d'électricité que pour les transports et représente la première source de matières premières pour l'industrie chimique. La production de pétrole est généralement assurée par des réservoirs matures exploités par injection d'eau dans un but de maintien de pression ou de balayage du réservoir. Pour améliorer l'efficacité de balayage du réservoir par l'eau injectée, la technique d'injection de polymères hydrosolubles a été développée. L'addition de polymère augmente la viscosité de l'eau injectée du pétrole par un balayage plus efficace du réservoir. Il est ainsi possible d'augmenter la production de pétrole tout en diminuant l'emprunte carbone. Les principaux polymères utilisés pour cette application sont de la famille des polyacrylamides. L'optimisation du procédé requiert une connaissance précise des relations structures-propriétés des polymères utilisés afin de mieux appréhender leurs propriétés viscosifiantes et de transport en milieu poreux. L'objectif est de mettre en place des méthodes analytiques pour la détermination de la distribution en masse molaire et du taux de ramification des polymères étudiés afin de pouvoir corréler les résultats obtenus aux propriétés rhéologiques et au comportement en filtration de leurs solutions. C'est pourquoi, dans le cadre de la thèse, quatre volets (WP pour work packaging) sont abordés afin de répondre au mieux à cette problématique concernant sa structure. Le premier volet (WP1) consiste à caractériser les différents polymères industriels à travers différents outils analytiques qui sont la Chromatographie d'Exclusion Stérique (Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC)) couplée à un détecteur de diffusion de lumière multi-angle (Multi-Angle Light Scattering (MALS)) pour la taille (masse molaire, Mw, et rayon de giration, Rg), et la rhéologie capillaire pour la viscosité intrinsèque et les courbes d'écoulement (rhéogramme). Ensuite, vient le second volet (WP2) qui a pour but d'étudier le taux de ramification des polymères. Pour ce faire, deux approches analytiques vont être utilisées. La première est la Py-GC/MS, la pyrolyse (Py) couplée à la Chromatographie en Phase Gazeuse (Gaz Chromatography (GC)) couplée elle aussi à la Spectrométrie de Masse (Mass Spectrometry (MS)) afin d'évaluer la microstructure du polymère. La deuxième partie de ce volet est la comparaison des paramètres structuraux (Mw, Rg et viscosité intrinsèque) obtenus par analyses SEC-MALS, diffusion de la lumière (MALS) et rhéologie capillaire. Un système de mélange continu automatique (Automatic Continuous Mixing (ACM)) couplé au rhéomètre capillaire et au MALS sera développé pour faire des analyses en ligne de viscosité intrinsèque et de masse molaire. Ce développement instrumental fait l'objet du troisième volet (WP3). Pour finir, le quatrième volet (WP4) consiste à étudier les propriétés des polymères pendant la filtrationThe knowledge of the dimensional properties (Mw, Rg, and the distributions), the viscosimetric properties ([η]), as well as, the branching rate of polymers is primordial for the implementation of a satisfactory Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) via polymer flooding. The principal objective of this thesis was to develop analytical methods in order to determine the characteristics of an optimized macromolecule developed by the SNF company, the poly(sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate) (P(ATBS)). Two categories of P(ATBS) were studied: the models and the industrials. The models of high molar masses (1-6 million g/mol) were synthetized by Controlled Radical Polymerization (CRP), for which the branching was controlled by the addition of a crosslinking agent. While the industrials of higher molar masses (8-19 million g/mol) were obtained by Radical Polymerization (RP), for which the branching could be induced by chain transfer reactions. The characterization of the dimensional/viscosimetric properties and the branching rate for both P(ATBS) categories was performed by Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), Frit-Inlet Asymmetric Flow Field-Flow Fractionation (FIA4F), capillary viscometry and Multi-Angle Light Scattering (MALS). A correlation of the physico-chemical properties was done to understand the behaviour of the P(ATBS) in solution. A related study was done by Pyrolysis coupled to a Gaz Chromatography and a Mass Spectrometer (Py-GC/MS) for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of the P(ATBS). To this day, the P(ATBS) has never been studied by this technique

In 1998 the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (the "OECD") commenced a campaign to eliminate harmful tax competition focusing on geographically mobile activities. The OECD targeted 35 jurisdictions and demanded that those nations amend their tax laws to remove the harmful features that provided more favorable tax treatment to geographically mobile capital than was available in some of its Member States. This thesis examines the international responsibility of the OECD and its Member States to determine whether their conduct in waging this campaign is in accordance with the international legal principles of state sovereignty and non-intervention. As an international actor with legal personality, the conduct of the OECD is found to engage its international responsibility for the breach of state sovereignty and non-intervention. The Member States in support of the OECD's actions are found to have primary and secondary responsibility under international law for the OEOD's actions.

Cette thèse traite du calcul et des applications des fonctions tau des hiérarchies de Drinfeld–Sokolov introduites en 1984. Les hiérarchies de Drinfeld–Sokolov sont des suites d’équations aux dérivées partielles intégrables que l’on associe à n’importe quelle algèbre de Lie semi simple. La fonction tau est une fonction associée à toute solution d’une hiérarchie donnée et qui contient toute l’information de la solution. Les fonctions tau sont au cœur des liens qui unissent les hiérarchies de Drinfeld–Sokolov et la géométrie algébrique. Au chapitre 3, nous établissons une transformation explicite entre les fonctions tau polynomiales de la hiérarchie de Korteweg–de Vries (associée à l’algèbre sl(2,C)) et les polynômes d’Adler–Moser (1978). Ces derniers forment une suite de polynômes satisfaisant une certaine relation de récurrence différentielle. Le chapitre 4 traite du calcul des fonctions tau polynomiales par les déterminants de Toeplitz ; une méthode introduite par Cafasso et Wu (2015). En collaboration avec Cafasso et Yang, nous avons obtenu une expansion de la fonction tau en une somme sur les partitions d’entiers. Nous en déduisons un critère de polynomialité de la fonction tau et donnons quelques exemples non triviaux. Au chapitre 5, en collaboration avec Paolo Rossi, nous confirmons la conjecture dite « DR/DZ forte » dans le cas de l’algèbre de Lie simple o(8,C) (D4). Elle prévoit l’équivalence, en particulier, entre les hiérarchies de Drinfeld–Sokolov et d’autres hiérarchies dites de « double ramification, » introduite par Buryak (2015) et construites à partir de la cohomologie de l’espace de modules des courbes complexes stables Mg,nThis thesis deals with the computation and applications of tau functions of the Drinfeld– Sokolov hierarchies introduced in 1984. The Drinfeld– Sokolov hierarchies are sequences of integrable partial differential equations which one associates to any semisimple Lie algebra. The tau function is a function associated to any solution of a given hierarchy and which contains all the information of the solution. Tau functions are at the heart of the bonds between Drinfeld–Sokolov hierarchies and algebraic geometry. In Chapter 3, we establish an explicit transformation between the polynomial tau functions of the Korteweg–de Vries hierarchy (associated to the algebra sl(2,C)) and the Adler–Moser polynomials (1978). The latter form a sequence of polynomials satisfying a certain differential recursion relation. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the computation of tau functions via Toeplitz determinants; a method introduced by Cafasso and Wu (2015). In collaboration with Cafasso and Yang, we obtained an expansion of the tau function as a sum over all integer partitions. It follows a simple criterion for the polynomiality of the tau function; we give some nontrivial examples. In Chapter 5, in collaboration with Paolo Rossi, we confirm the so-called ‘strong DR/DZ conjecture’ for the algebra o(8,C) (D4). The latter states an equivalence between, in particular, Drinfeld–Sokolov hierarchies and another kind of hierarchies called ‘the double ramification hierarchies’ introduced by Buryak (2015) and constructed from the cohomology of the moduli spaces of stables complex curves Mg,n

Les hiérarchies de Drinfeld–Sokolov sont des suites d’équations aux dérivées partielles intégrables que l’on associe à n’importe quelle algèbre de Lie semi simple. La fonction tau est une fonction associée à toute solution d’une hiérarchie donnée et qui contient toute l’information de la solution. Les fonctions tau sont au cœur des liens qui unissent les hiérarchies de Drinfeld–Sokolov et la géométrie algébrique. Au chapitre 3, nous établissons une transformation explicite entre les fonctions tau polynomiales de la hiérarchie de Korteweg–de Vries (associée à l’algèbre sl(2,C)) et les polynômes d’Adler–Moser (1978). Ces derniers forment une suite de polynômes satisfaisant une certaine relation de récurrence différentielle. Le chapitre 4 traite du calcul des fonctions tau polynomiales par les déterminants de Toeplitz ; une méthode introduite par Cafasso et Wu (2015). En collaboration avec Cafasso et Yang, nous avons obtenu une expansion de la fonction tau en une somme sur les partitions d’entiers. Nous en déduisons un critère de polynomialité de la fonction tau et donnons quelques exemples non triviaux. Au chapitre 5, en collaboration avec Paolo Rossi, nous confirmons la conjecture dite « DR/DZ forte » dans le cas de l’algèbre de Lie simple o(8,C) (D4). Elle prévoit l’équivalence, en particulier, entre les hiérarchies de Drinfeld–Sokolov et d’autres hiérarchies dites de « double ramification, » introduite par Buryak (2015) et construites à partir de la cohomologie de l’espace de modules des courbes complexes stables Mg,nThis thesis deals with the computation and applications of tau functions of the Drinfeld– Sokolov hierarchies introduced in 1984. The Drinfeld– Sokolov hierarchies are sequences of integrable partial differential equations which one associates to any semisimple Lie algebra. The tau function is a function associated to any solution of a given hierarchy and which contains all the information of the solution. Tau functions are at the heart of the bonds between Drinfeld–Sokolov hierarchies and algebraic geometry. In Chapter 3, we establish an explicit transformation between the polynomial tau functions of the Korteweg–de Vries hierarchy (associated to the algebra sl(2,C)) and the Adler–Moser polynomials (1978). The latter form a sequence of polynomials satisfying a certain differential recursion relation. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the computation of tau functions via Toeplitz determinants; a method introduced by Cafasso and Wu (2015). In collaboration with Cafasso and Yang, we obtained an expansion of the tau function as a sum over all integer partitions. It follows a simple criterion for the polynomiality of the tau function; we give some nontrivial examples. In Chapter 5, in collaboration with Paolo Rossi, we confirm the so-called ‘strong DR/DZ conjecture’ for the algebra o(8,C) (D4). The latter states an equivalence between, in particular, Drinfeld–Sokolov hierarchies and another kind of hierarchies called ‘the double ramification hierarchies’ introduced by Buryak (2015) and constructed from the cohomology of the moduli spaces of stables complex curves Mg,n

This chapter examines the implications of behavioral insights for tax design, taxpayers’ decision-making, and tax compliance. With regard to tax design, the chapter discusses policymakers’ own heuristics and biases, and their catering to (or exploitation of) the biased judgments of the public at large. Regarding economic decision-making, the chapter explores the dark and bright sides of tax saliency. With regard to compliance, it explains why people pay taxes, and how this compliance might be further enhanced. Finally, the chapter explains how cognitive factors affect taxpayers’ inclination to challenge tax liability. Additionally, the chapter describes the behavioral contribution to positive and normative analyses of redistribution, by shedding new light on how people form judgments about tax progressivity; the cognitive ramifications of poverty; wealth and subjective well-being; and the choice between methods and objects of redistribution. The chapter also comments on the use of taxes as a means of modifying human behavior.

Moreover, it places the Fiat ruling of the ECJ’s Grand Chamber (November 2022) in its broader context and ponders it wider significance as regards the next ‘day’ in EU State aid law. It illuminates its ramifications in relation to harmful tax competition and its impact on the effectiveness of State aid law as a policy weapon in this regard.

This chapter assesses whether there is a national trend in the United States toward disproportionate imposition of regressive taxes on low-income communities of color, reflective of a deliberate effort to shift the tax burden from the wealthy and white to the poor and black. This phenomenon is not new. There is a history of communities that are facing financial exigencies correcting their budget deficits by levying formal and informal taxes on black people. The collateral consequence of formal and informal taxes levied disproportionately on black people includes more potentially violent confrontations with police and responses like the Black Lives Matter Movement. The chapter then considers whether well-intentioned white folks have lent their support to racist taxation, perhaps unwittingly, because the stated purposes of increased taxes satisfy their social desires while it squares with their financial interests to ignore the disparate racial ramifications.

Policies are proposed as ‘radical humanism’ to eradicate poverty and redress inequality while vanquishing caste and untouchability. On the economic policy side, the chapter recommends intensification of cash and assets transfers and tax policy reform to reduce inequality through higher income tax progressivity, wealth, gift and inheritance taxes, increased taxes on luxuries, use of earmarked taxes for their intended purposes of education and health and tax administration reform to counter tax evasion. It recommends cutting back bureaucratic hurdles, expanding private-public partnership in the provision of socio-economic services such as hospitals, and encouragement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for services to the very poor. It recommends perceptible step-up of women’s rights through proportional representation and children’s condition including health and education. It proposes a youth task force to implement compulsory social service by youth in rural and urban sectors following existing global and prior domestic experience, and proposes a framework for services by sector. It urges political reform while pointing out that caste-based politics is unlikely to serve the nation in the long run. It traces the ongoing work at the United Nations to draw attention to financial transfers of the colonial era and strongly suggests international financial reparations to counter the ramifications of global colonialism.

Abstract What exactly is a health-care “entitlement”? More specifically, what are the legal ramifications of entitlement status? Yet more specifically, how does the concept of entitlement apply to the three programs with which this book is primarily concerned—Medicare, Medicaid, and the tax exclusions that are available for subsidizing employment-related health insurance? The dictionary defines the verb entitle as “to furnish with a right or claim to something.” The noun entitlement, therefore, is a claim or right that has been furnished. In the context of Medicare and Medicaid, the claim or right is obviously that of the beneficiary or recipient to health-care goods and services. By extension, providers may also have a claim or right to be paid for goods or services that they provide to recipients. Employers and employees have a legal claim to tax exclusions and deductions for employment-related health insurance. Employees have legal rights against the programs employers adopt because of these subsidies. What is the nature of these claims or rights, however? And by what means are they “furnished”?

In this chapter, Robert Pinker reflects on the implications of the largely unexpected outcome to the 2015 general election in the UK that termined the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition and saw the return of single party government by Conservatives for the first time since 1992. He first considers the social policy proposals set out in the Conservative and Labour Party 2015 election manifestos before discussing how the government clarified its post-election policy intentions in three keynote speeches as it prepared the ground for the Chancellor's presentation of his July Budget. He then analyses the Chancellor's position on tax credits, Labour's response to his budget proposals, the concurrent progress of its leadership election campaign and its eventual outcome. Pinker concludes with an assessment of the ways in which these events, and their ideological ramifications, might affect the prospects for health and social care in the UK over the next five years.
