Abstract:
We report winter predation by River Otter, Lontra canadensis, on Tautog, Tautoga onitis, a southern marine fish, at Western Arm Jeddore Harbour, Halifax County, Nova Scotia (44°46'N, 63°03'W), on 17 February 2008. We also discuss the distribution of Tautog in the western Atlantic Ocean, review Canadian records, and provide evidence that resident relict populations of this fish exist in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTTemperature can be a key abiotic factor in fish distribution, as it affects most physiological processes. Specifically, temperature can affect locomotor capabilities, especially as species are exposed to temperatures nearing their thermal limits. In this study, we aimed to understand the effects of temperature on muscle in two labrids that occupy the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. When exposed to cold temperatures in autumn, cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus) and tautog (Tautoga onitis) go into a state of winter dormancy. Transitions into dormancy vary slightly, where tautog will make short migrations to overwintering habitats while cunner overwinter in year-round habitats. To understand how muscle function changes with temperature, we held fish for 4 weeks at either 5 or 20°C and then ran muscle kinetic and workloop experiments at 5, 10 and 20°C. Following experiments, we used immunohistochemistry staining to identify acclimation effects on myosin isoform expression. Muscle taken from warm-acclimated cunner performed the best, whereas there were relatively few differences among the other three groups. Cunner acclimated at both temperatures downregulated the myosin heavy chain, suggesting a transition in fiber type from slow-oxidative to fast-glycolytic. This change did not amount to a detectable difference in muscle power production and kinetics. However, overall poor performance at cold temperatures could force these fishes into torpor to overwinter. Tautog, alternatively, retained myosin heavy chains, which likely increases locomotor capabilities when making short migrations to overwintering habitats.

Abstract:
Multi-tiered oyster aquaculture cages may provide habitat for fish assemblages similar to natural structured seafloor. Methods were developed to assess fish assemblages associated with aquaculture gear and boulder habitat using underwater video census combined with environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. Action cameras were mounted on 3 aquaculture cages at a commercial eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica farm (‘cage’) and among 3 boulders on a natural rock reef (‘boulder’) from June to August 2017 in Long Island Sound, USA. Interval and continuous video recording strategies were tested. During interval recording, cameras collected 8 min video segments hourly from 07:00 to 19:00 h on cages only. Continuous video was also collected for 2-3 h on oyster cages and boulders. Data loggers recorded light intensity and current speed. Seawater was collected for eDNA metabarcoding on the reef and farm. MaxN measurements of fish abundance were calculated in video, and 7 fish species were observed. Black sea bass Centropristis striata, cunner Tautogolabrus adspersus, scup Stenotomus chrysops, and tautog Tautoga onitis were the most abundant species observed in both oyster cage and boulder videos. In continuous video, black sea bass, scup, and tautog were observed more frequently and at higher abundance on the cage farm, while cunner were observed more frequently and at higher abundance on boulders within the rock reef. eDNA metabarcoding detected 42 fish species at the farm and reef. Six species were detected using both methods. Applied in tandem, video recording and eDNA provided a comprehensive approach for describing fish assemblages in difficult to sample structured oyster aquaculture and boulder habitats.

Kadangi globalizacija supa mus ir daro poveikį mūsų kasdienybei, paliesdama mums artimą pasaulį, iškeldama diskusiją su mums įprastomis mūsų politinėms bei kultūrinėmis vertybėmis, buvo iškeltas tyrimo tikslas - išsiaiškinti tautos ir valstybės atskirties (susvetimėjimo) politinės ir kultūrinės globalizacijos kontekste priežastis. The subject of the work is “The relation between the polity and nation (the aspect of alienation). The work was made by Domas Grigaliūnas, Political sociology master’s degree student of VPU Social sciences faculty Sociology and political sciences department. Šiame darbe analizuojama Seimo kaip Tautos atstovybės konstitucinė samprata. Atskleidžiama Tautos suvereniteto samprata – vienintelė suvereniteto turėtoja – tęstinė tauta, kuri deleguodama dalį savo suvereniteto, legitimuoja parlamento galią veikti Tautos vardu ir interesais. Nagrinėjamos parlamentarizmo ištakos Lietuvoje, atskleidžiant, jog jau LDK laikais egzistavo parlamentarizmo užuomazgų. Aptariami Lietuvos tarpukario Seimai bei „Lietuvos TSR Aukščiausiosios Tarybos“, kodėl jos nėra ir negali būti laikomos Lietuvos valstybės parlamentais. Remiantis Konstitucinio Teismo jurisprudencija, nagrinėjami Lietuvos Respublikos Seimo teisiniai santykiai su vykdomąja ir teismine valdžiomis. Atskleidžiamas Seimo nario kaip Tautos atstovo teisinis statusas - parlamentaro mandato turinys, įgaliojimų įgijimo ir pasibaigimo teisiniai pagrindai, parlamentaro teisių ir pareigių visuma bei veiklos garantijos. This work analyses the constitutional concept of the Seimas as representation of the Nation. Under the Constitution, only Members of the Seimas are representatives of the Nation and only the Seimas is the representation of the Nation. One of the most important features according to which a state institution is to be ascribed to the representation of the Nation is that it is a collegiate state institution, which is comprised from representatives of the Nation and which adopts decisions only after debates, only by majority of votes and by taking account of various opinions. Uncovering nation’s concept of sovereignty as the only holder, continues Nation which by delegating part of its sovereignty is legitimizing the power of parliament to act on behalf of the Nation. Examined is the outcomes of parliamentary in Lithuania, disclosing the fact that might of started forming as late as times of Great Lithuanian Kingdom. Also discussed is in-between war period the Seimas as well as Highest Council of Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, why it can’t be treated as true Lithuanian parliament. Šio darbo analizės objektas – tautinio identiteto išraiškos teatre. Jame siekta išsiaiškinti, kokio pobūdžio tautiškumas atsispindi dramos teatrų spektakliuose. Pasirinkta analizuoti įvairius šaltinius (teatrų repertuarai, spektaklių recenzijos), taip pat atlikti interviu su teatralais bei padaryti visuomenės anketinę apklausą, siekiant išsiaiškinti, kokią vietą teatras užima visuomenės gyvenime. Lietuvoje veikia 13 valstybinių teatrų, iš jų 8 – dramos teatrai. Toks skaičius gali būti sietinas su nusistovėjusia tradicija Lietuvos kultūriniame gyvenime. Tyrimui pasirinkti 4 valstybinių dramos teatrų (Nacionalinio, Kauno, Panevėžio J. Miltinio ir Šiaulių) repertuarų analizė, siekiant išsiaiškinti, kokią vietą užima nacionalinė dramaturgija teatrų repertuaruose bei kokios yra vyraujančios tendencijos, susijusios su tam tikrais Lietuvos įvykiais ar jų pasekmėmis. Teatro svarba visuomenėje yra labai didelė. Jis – visuomeninio meno forma, leidžianti bendrauti, kalbėti apie visuomenei ar individui svarbias temas. Neatsitiktinai teatras yra viena iš tų kultūrinių įstaigų, kurių veikla yra kontroliuojama totalitariniuose ar autoritariniuose režimuose (galima prisiminti SSRS pavyzdį). Sovietmečiu Lietuvos teatras sugebėjo išlikti, kaip priešprieša buvusiai tvarkai, bei puoselėti tautinę savimonę, pavyzdžiui, per istorinius pastatymus. Subject of the present Paper is expressions of national identity at theatre. The aim of the present Paper is to find out what type of nationality is reflected at plays of drama theatres. Analysis of various sources (repertoires of theatres, reviews of plays) has been selected as well some theatre people were interviewed and questionnaires for the society have been prepared in order to find out what part of the society’s life was taken by theatre. There are 13 state theatres operating in Lithuania, 8 of them are drama theatres. Such a number could be related to the established tradition in the cultural life in Lithuania. Analysis of 4 state drama theatres’ (National, Kaunas, Panevėžys J. Miltinis, and Šiauliai) repertoires has been selected for the research in order to find out what part of theatre repertoires is taken by national dramaturgy and what are the prevailing tendencies related to certain events in Lithuania or consequences thereof. The importance of theatre is very great in the society. Theatre is a form of public art enabling communication, speaking about the subjects that are relevant to the society or an individual. Abstract:
There are right to healthy environment and right to sustainable development analized in regard of climate change and degradation of Earth ecosystem as a whole in this paper. The aim of this issue is to identify at what level the nexus between two of the third generation human rights – the right to healthy and sound environment and right to sustainable development – is established in the framework of United Nations. The paper is structurized into three parts, where the typology of three generation human rights, so specific for United Nations, is discussed. There are also jurisprudence of main United Nations conventional human rights bodies overviewed in a prospective of the right to healthy environment and coordinative activity of the United Nations in accordance to sustainable development analized here.

Abstract:
Disertacijoje yra tiriama, kokiu būdu yra „įsivaizduojama“ tauta Nikolajaus Karamzino mažųjų žanrų kūriniuose. Skirtingai nuo esančios tautos problematikos tyrinėjimo tradicijos Karamzino kūryboje, disertacijoje dėmesys yra sutelkiamas ne į rašytojo idėjų visumą, ar tautos sampratos analizę, bet į jos poetikos tyrimą pačiuose tekstuose. Pagrindiniais tautos poetikos elementais yra laikomi erdvė, laikas bei emocijos, kurių reikšmės yra sistemingai analizuojamos panegiriniuose, politiniuose bei grožiniuose Karamzino tekstuose. Šitoks tyrinėjimo rakursas leidžia atskleisti ryšį tarp estetinio teksto lygmens ir rašytojo politinės „vaizduotės“. Darbe yra parodoma, kad tautos poetikos elementų reikšmių specifika atsiskleidžia per estetines grožio bei pakylėtumo kategorijas (suprantamas, remiantis Edmundo Berko estetika), kurios, savo ruožtu, yra susijusios su rašytojo realistine bei utopine politinio mąstymo tendencija. Be to, darbe yra išryškinami sąveikos ypatumai bei skirtumai tarp tautos ir imperijos poetikos. Darbas yra tarpdisciplininio pobūdžio, kadangi jame yra atsižvelgiama į įvairias prieigas, taikomas kitose mokslo srityse (emocijų ir idėjų istorijoje, estetikoje, politinėje teorijoje), tiesiogiai ar netiesiogiai susijusias su tautos problematikos nagrinėjimu. Disertacijoje yra laikomasi konstruktyvistinės prieigos, atsisakančios esencializuoti reiškinius, bei taikomas struktūrinis analizės metodas.
The dissertation is devoted to the question how the nation is “imagined” in Nikolaj Karamzin’s works of the small genre. Unlike the existing tradition of researches of the problematics of the nation in Karamzin’s works, in this doctoral thesis attention is focused not on the set of his ideas, or on analysis of the concept of the nation, but on the poetics of the nation his texts on their own. The main elements of the poetics of the nation are considered to be space, time and emotions, whose meanings are systematically analyzed in Karamzin’s panegyric, political and prose fiction texts. Such study perspective allows revealing a connection between aesthetic dimension of the text and his political “imagination”. It is shown that the meaning of the elements of the poetics of the nation is defined through the categories of the sublime and the beautiful (understood basing on Edmund Burke’s aesthetics) that, in turn, are related to realistic and utopian tendency in Karamzin’s political “imagination”. Besides, the work highlights the peculiarities of the interrelation between the poetics of the nation and the empire in his texts. It has an interdisciplinary character, because it draws on different approaches applied in various areas of science (history of ideas and emotions, aesthetics, political theory) directly or indirectly related to analysis of the problematics of the nation. The dissertation uses the constructivist approach and structural method of analysis.
В диссертации исследуются способы «воображения» нации в произведениях Николая Карамзина малых жанров. В отличие от существующей традиции исследования проблематики нации в творчестве Карамзина, в диссертации анализируется не совокупность идей писателя, но поэтика нации в самих текстах. Конститутивными элементами ее поэтики полагаются пространство, время и эмоции, значения которых систематически исследуются в его панегирических, политических и художественных текстах. Такой исследовательский ракурс позволяет раскрыть связь между эстетическим измерением текста и политическим воображением писателя. В работе показывается, что специфика значений элементов поэтики нации раскрывается посредством эстетических категорий возвышенного и прекрасного (понимаемых, основываясь на эстетике Эдмунда Берка), которые, в свою очередь, связаны с реалистической и утопической тенденциями его политического мышления. Кроме того, в диссертации рассматриваются особенности взаимодействия между поэтикой нации и империи. Работа имеет междисциплинарный характер, так как в ней учитываются различные подходы, применяемые в других областях (историй эмоций и идей, эстетике, политической теории), прямо или косвенно связанных с исследованиями проблематики нации. В диссертации применяется конструктивистский подход, а также структурный метод анализа.

Tiivistelmä. Dupuytrenin tauti on kämmenkalvon hyvänlaatuinen sidekudossairaus, joka aiheuttaa sormia koukkuun taivuttavan sidekudosjuosteen. Koukkuun taipuneet sormet voivat pahimmillaan aiheuttaa käteen alentuneen toimintakyvyn. Dupuytrenin tauti on pääosin valkoihoisten miesten tauti, jonka riskitekijöitä vaikuttaisivat olevan ikä, perimä, diabetes, tupakointi ja alkoholin suurkulutus. Dupuytrenin tautiin ei ole parantavaa hoitoa, vaan käden toimintakykyä pyritään parantamaan poistamalla kurovaa juostetta leikkauksin tai katkaisemalla juoste kollagenaasia pilkkovalla injektiovalmisteella. Tässä tutkimuksessa pyrimme selvittämään leikkaushoidon ja Xiapex-pistoshoidon komplikaatioiden yleisyyden kolmen kuukauden seurannassa. Tutkimus toteutettiin perehtymällä Oulun yliopistollisen sairaalan kirurgian poliklinikalla aikavälillä 21.9.2011–31.12.2016 käyneiden potilaiden asiakirjoihin. Tutkimustulokset olivat selviä; Xiapex-pistoshoidon saaneilla komplikaatioita oli huomattavasti vähemmän kuin leikkaushoidon saaneilla. Leikkaushoidossa komplikaatioiden yleisyys oli 43,8% ja pistoshoidolla 6,0%. Vakavia, kädentoimintakykyyn vaikuttavia komplikaatioita oli kuitenkin kummassakin ryhmässä vain yksittäisiä. Tutkimuksen ongelmana oli se, että pistoshoidon saaneiden taudinkuva oli usein lievempi ja osalla leikkaushoitoon päätyneistä oli aikaisemmin tehtyjä toimenpiteitä, pistoshoitoja tai taudinkuva oli vaikempi.

Abstract:
Tämän tutkielman aiheena oli Kienböckin tauti. Tutkimus tehtiin käsikirurgian klinikalle käsikirurgi Marko Sunnarin ohjauksessa. Tässä tutkimuksessa oli potilasmateriaalina Oulun yliopistollisessa sairaalassa Kienböckin taudin takia hoidetut potilaat vuosien 2000–2010 välillä. Tavoitteena oli tutkia hoidon kulkua sekä hoidon onnistumista, huomioida mahdollisten tunnettujen riskitekijöiden esiintyvyys potilasaineistossa, selvittää hoidon pitkäaikaistulokset (yli 2 vuotta) sekä Kienböckin taudin vaikeusaste diagnoosihetkellä. Erityisesti huomiota kiinnitettiin revaskularisaatio- ja salvageleikkaushoitojen eroihin seurannan aikana. Aineistona toimii edellämainitulla aikavälillä hoidetut 43 potilasta. Heistä kerättiin potilasasiakirjojen perusteella tietoja: nimi, henkilöturvatunnus, sosiaaliturvatunnus, ammatti, ikä hoitoon hakeutuessa, tupakointi, dominoiva käsi, sairastunut käsi, ranteen liikkuvuus ennen ja jälkeen leikkauksen, suunniteltu hoito, toteutunut hoito, jonotusaika, jatkotoimenpiteet, preoperatiiviset tutkimukset, toipumisaika, taudin vaikeusaste hoitoon hakeutuessa, ulnaarivarianssi ja aiemmat käsien vammat. Pienen potilasaineiston takia tilastollisesti merkittäviä tuloksia ei saatu, mutta saatuja tuloksia käsiteltiin silti esimerkiksi vertailemalla tässä tutkimuksessa tulleita tuloksia aikaisempiin, kirjallisuudesta löydettyihin tuloksiin. Tärkeimpinä tutkimustuloksina voidaan pitää molemminpuolisen Kienböckin taudin esiintyvyyttä potilasaineistossa. Lisäksi leikkaushoitoina ei tehty radiuksen lyhennysosteotomioita, mikä nykytiedon valossa vaikuttaa perustellulta ratkaisulta, koska negatiivista ulnaarivarianssia ei pidetä merkittävänä tekijää taudin synnyssä. Näin pystyttiin vertailemaan revaskularisaation ja salvagetoimenpiteiden eroja seurannan aikana. Tulosten mukaan revaskularisaatiolla hoidetut potilaat joutuvat useammin uusintatoimenpiteeseen, toipumisajat ovat pidemmät, ja hieman pienempi osa pystyi palaamaan entiseen työhönsä.

Taunton, Massachusetts (City) is a city of 55,000 people located in Southeast Massachusetts, approximately 35 miles from Boston. Currently it hosts a regional landfill that will reach capacity in 2013. Beginning in 2005, the City began the process of searching for a solid waste management technology to replace the landfill. The focus for the search has been on conversion technologies capable of recovering materials and producing electricity or fuels, and maximizing diversion of waste from landfilling. Technologies being considered include both traditional and emerging technologies; e.g., composting, co-composting, thermal gasification, aerobic and anaerobic digestion, hydrolysis and mechanical means of waste separation into useful products. Landfilling and traditional waste-to-energy technology are not being considered.

Abstract The large amplitude motion of floating structures could cause slack-taut transformation in the taut mooring system, which may result in snap load. The dynamic finite element analysis model is established to simulate the slack-taut process through adding a series of sinusoidal excitation with different amplitudes and frequencies to the upper end of a taut mooring line. During the slack-taut process, the minimum dynamic tension could be close to zero, and the maximum dynamic tension could come up to several times of pretension. The change laws of dynamic tension during the slack-taut process are compared and summarized. The calculation results show that the phenomenon of slack-taut could occur when the amplitude and frequency of excitation reach some certain value. The mooring line tension spectra show that the doubling and higher frequency components appear in addition to the frequency of excitation. The results could provide a reference for further investigating on the mechanism of snap load and the design of mooring system.

Abstract:
This Insight Note contributes to the growing body of knowledge on teaching practices that foster student learning and achievement by analysing in-depth qualitative data from classroom observations and teacher interviews. Much of the research on teachers and teaching in development literature focuses on observable and quantified factors, including qualifications and training. But simply being qualified (with a university degree in education or subject areas), or trained in certain ways (e.g., coaching versus in-service) explains very little of the variation in learning outcomes (Kane and Staiger, 2008; Wößmann, 2003; Das and Bau, 2020). Teaching is a complex set of practices that draw on teachers’ beliefs about learning, their prior experiences, their content and pedagogical knowledge and repertoire, and their commitment and personality. Recent research in the educational development literature has turned to examining teaching practices, including content knowledge, pedagogical practices, and teacher-student interactions, primarily through quantitative data from knowledge tests and classroom observations of practices (see Bruns, De Gregorio and Taut, 2016; Filmer, Molina and Wane, 2020; Glewwe et al, in progress). Other studies, such as TIMSS, the OECD and a few World Bank studies have used classroom videos to further explain high inference factors of teachers’ (Gallimore and Hiebert, 2000; Tomáš and Seidel, 2013). In this Note, we ask the question: What are the teaching practices that support and foster high levels of learning? Vietnam is a useful case to examine because student learning outcomes based on international tests are high, and most students pass the basic learning levels (Dang, Glewwe, Lee and Vu, 2020). But considerable variation exists between learning outcomes, particularly at the secondary level, where high achieving students will continue to upper-secondary and lower achieving students will drop out at Grade 9 (Dang and Glewwe, 2018). So what differentiates teaching for those who achieve these high learning outcomes and those who don’t? Some characteristics of teachers, such as qualifications and professional commitment, do not vary greatly because most Vietnamese teachers meet the national standards in terms of qualifications (have a college degree) and have a high level of professionalism (Glewwe et al., in progress). Other factors that influence teaching, such as using lesson plans and teaching the national curriculum, are also highly regulated. Therefore, to explain how teaching might affect student learning outcomes, it is important to examine more closely teachers’ practices in the classroom.
