Abstract:

Der Durchmesser eines Schiffspropellers ist durch den Tiefgang eines Schiffes begrenzt. Die Kontur moderner Schiffspropeller (Skew-Propeller) ähnelt dem Flügel einer Taube, die im Gleitflug zum Landen ansetzt. Tauben zählen zu den Schlagfliegern, die auch Ruderflieger genannt werden. Bei einem Schlagflieger treten während des Flügelaufschlages vergleichbare Strömungsverhältnisse wie bei einem Schiffspropeller auf. Strömungstechnisch sind beim Flügel der Schlagflieger während des Flügelaufschlages zwei Bereiche zu unterscheiden, einer, der vorwiegend dem Auftrieb dient, und ein zweiter, der insbesondere den Schub erzeugt. Werden diese Erfahrungen auf Schiffspropeller übertragen, führen sie zu einer völlig neuen Propellerflügelkonstruktion, mit der die Wirbelbildung und Kavitation erheblich reduziert werden kann.

In a recent study, Shinder and Taube (Shinder ME, Taube JS. J Neurophysiol 121: 4–37, 2019) concluded that head direction cells in the anterior thalamus of rats are tuned to one-dimensional (1D, yaw-only) motion, in contrast to recent findings in bats, mice, and rats. Here we reinterpret the author’s experimental results using model comparison and demonstrate that, contrary to their conclusions, experimental data actually supports the dual-axis rule (lson JJ, Jeffery KJ. J Neurophysiol 119: 192–208, 2018) and tilted azimuth model (Laurens J, Angelaki DE. Neuron 97: 275–289, 2018), where head direction cells use gravity to integrate 3D rotation signals about all cardinal axes of the head. We further show that the Shinder and Taube study is inconclusive regarding the presence of vertical orientation tuning; i.e., whether head direction cells encode 3D orientation in the horizontal and vertical planes conjunctively. Using model simulations, we demonstrate that, even if 3D tuning existed, the experimental protocol and data analyses used by Shinder and Taube would not have revealed it. We conclude that the actual experimental data of Shinder and Taube are compatible with the 3D properties of head direction cells discovered by other groups, yet incorrect conclusions were reached because of incomplete and qualitative analyses. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We conducted a model-based analysis previously published data where rat head direction cells were recorded during three-dimensional motion (Shinder ME, Taube JS. J Neurophysiol 121: 4–37, 2019). We found that these data corroborate previous models (“dual-axis rule,” Page HJI, Wilson JJ, Jeffery KJ. J Neurophysiol 119: 192–208, 2018; and “tilted azimuth model,” Laurens J, Angelaki DE. Neuron 97: 275–289, 2018) where head direction cells integrate rotations along all three head axes to encode head orientation in a gravity-anchored reference frame.

Frente a la discusión epistemológica del área, este artículo tiene como objetivo discutir los enfoques epistemológicos identificados en la producción científica de Mortimer Taube. Por lo tanto, este artículo identifica específicamente los enfoques epistemológicos que sirvieron de base para la producción científica de Taube y problematiza los constructos teóricos de este autor. Metodológicamente, el estudio se caracteriza por ser cualitativo, exploratorio, bibliográfico y documental, sin delimitación cronológica, y basado en la hermenéutica para la interpretación y redacción de los resultados. Las fuentes utilizadas fueron seleccionadas de acuerdo con su especificidad y debido a la participación de Taube con tales instituciones: Association for Information Science and Technology, Duke University, Library of Congress, Columbia University, Digital Journal Storage Library, NASA Library, Biblioteca Nacional, University of Chicago Press Journal y Library Quarterly. De los 264 documentos recuperados, 124 fueron leídos y analizados y conforman el corpus de este artículo. Los resultados muestran que los enfoques epistemológicos que impregnan la obra de Taube son el Positivismo Lógico y la Filosofía Analítica, y que su posición epistemológica puede ser identificada por el enfoque de Epistemología Crítica.

Abstract:

One of the few female directors employed at DEFA Studios, Iris Gusner directed Die Taube auf dem Dach in 1972. It was banned and thought lost until rediscovered in 1990, only to be lost again and restored a second time for a premiere 37 years after completion. My essay reviews the remarkable production history of Die Taube and explores what made Gusner’s work unacceptable for public consumption and debate. Attentive to discourse analysis and gender studies, I argue that Die Taube was censored largely because it assaulted the core ideal of selfless socialist construction and revealed the unsuitability of the hegemonic modes of masculinity for building successful heterosexual relations. I argue that Gusner’s disparagement of outdated and progressive masculine heroic identities contributed to the film’s censorship, disappearance, and near elimination from film history.

Datenbanksuchen ergaben weltweit 1184 Studien zum Thema, von denen 10 in ein systematisches Literaturreview eingeschlossen wurden. Untersucht wurden 1–85 taube Patienten (7–60 J.). Neun Studien zeigten Therapieerfolge. Identifiziert wurden Empfehlungen zu Wissen, Einstellungen, Fähigkeiten und Rahmenbedingungen für hörende Psychotherapeuten und Dolmetscher. Die Datenlage zur Psychotherapie mit Gebärdensprachdolmetscher ist trotz klinischer Relevanz gering und methodisch limitiert.

Abstract:

The cells of the inner cell mass constitute the pluripotent cell population of the early embryo. They have the potential to form all of the tissues of the embryo proper and some extra-embryonic tissues. They can be considered a transient stem cell population for the whole of the embryo, and stem cells maintaining the same capacity can be isolated from these cells. We have isolated, characterised and mutated a novel gene, taube nuss (Tbn), that is essential for the survival of this important cell population. The taube nuss protein sequence (TBN) was highly conserved between human, mouse, Xenopus laevis, Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans and Arabidopsis thaliana, particularly in a domain that is not present in any published proteins, showing that TBN is the founding member of a completely new class of proteins with an important function in development. The Tbn gene was expressed ubiquitously as early as E2. 5 and throughout embryonic development. It was also expressed in adult brain with slightly higher levels in the hippocampus. The Tbn mutant embryos developed normally to the blastocyst stage and contained inner cell masses. They hatched from the zonae pellucidae, implanted and induced decidual reactions, but failed to develop beyond E4.0. At this time the trophoblast cells were viable, but inner cell masses were not detectable. At E3.75, massive TUNEL-positive DNA degradation and chromatin condensation were visible within the inner cell masses, whereas the cell membranes where intact. Caspase 3 was expressed in these cells. In vitro, the inner cell mass of mutant embryos failed to proliferate and died after a short period in culture. These results indicate that the novel protein, taube nuss, is necessary for the survival of the inner cell mass cells and that inner cell mass cells died of apoptosis in the absence of the taube nuss protein. As cell pruning by apoptosis is a recognised developmental process at this stage of development, the taube nuss protein may be one of the factors regulating the extent of programmed cell death at this time point.

Zusammenfassung: Menschen unterscheiden sich in ihrer individuellen Maximierungstendenz, dem Streben nach optimalen versus zufrieden stellenden Entscheidungen. Die hier vorgestellte Skala zur Erfassung der Maximierungstendenz stellt eine Übersetzung der maximizing scale dar, welche von Schwartz et al. (2002) für den angloamerikanischen Raum entwickelt wurde. Ebenfalls berichtet wird die Übersetzung einer Skala zur Erfassung von dispositionellem Bedauern, die zusammen mit der Maximierungsskala veröffentlicht wurde. In zwei Studien (N = 317, 219) wurden die Faktorenstruktur, die Reliabilität sowie die Validität der deutschen Version der Maximierungsskala untersucht. Erstmals konnte gezeigt werden, dass Maximierer im Vergleich zu Satisfizierern eher das Optimum anstreben und intensiver nach passenden Optionen suchen.

Abstract:

Since the synthesis of the Creutz–Taube ion, the nature of its charge localization has been of immense scientific interest, this molecule providing a model system for the understanding of the operation of biological photosynthetic and electron-transfer processes. However, recent work has shown that its nature remains an open question. Many systems of this type, including photosynthetic reaction centres, are of current research interest, and thereby the Creutz–Taube ion provides an important chemical paradigm: the key point of interest is the details of how such molecules behave. We lay the groundwork for the construction of a comprehensive model for its chemical and spectroscopic properties. Advances are described in some of the required areas including: simulation of electronic absorption spectra; quantitative depiction of the large interaction of the ion's electronic description with solvent motions; and the physics of Ru–NH 3 spectator-mode vibrations. We show that details of the solvent electron–phonon coupling are critical in the interpretation of the spectator-mode vibrations, as these strongly mix with solvent motions when 0.75<2 J / λ <1. In this regime, a double-well potential exists which does not support localized zero-point vibration, and many observed properties of the Creutz–Taube ion are shown to be consistent with the hypothesis that the ion has this character.

Abstract:

A major question in the field of spatial cognition is how animals represent three-dimensional (3D) space. Different results have been obtained across various species and may depend on whether the species inhabits a 3D environment or is terrestrial (land dwelling). The head direction (HD) cell system is an attractive candidate to study in terms of 3D representations. HD cells fire as a function of the animal’s directional heading in the horizontal plane, independent of the animal’s location and on-going behavior. Another issue concerns whether HD cells are tuned in 3D space or tuned to the 2D horizontal plane. Shinder and Taube (Shinder ME, Taube JS. J Neurophysiol 121: 4–37, 2019) addressed this issue by manipulating a rat’s orientation in 3D space while monitoring responses from classic HD cells in the rat anterodorsal thalamus. They reported that HD cells did not display conjunctive firing with pitch or roll orientations. Direction-specific firing was primarily derived from horizontal semicircular canal information and that the gravity vector played an important role in influencing the cell’s firing rate and its preferred firing direction. Laurens and Angelaki (Laurens J, Angelaki DE. J Neurophysiol 122: 1274–1287, 2019) challenged this view by performing a mathematical analysis on the Shinder and Taube data and concluded that they would not have seen 3D tuning based on their experimental approach. We provide a historical review of these issues followed by a summary of the experiments, which includes additional analyses. We then define what it means for a HD cell to be tuned in 3D and finish by rebutting the reanalyses performed by Laurens and Angelaki.

Damit ergibt sich eine Ausweitung der Indikation auf große, oft polymorbide Patientenkollektive mit genuin hohem Risiko für katabole Episoden und akute Organdysfunktion. Ketoazidose unter SGLT2-Hemmern SGLT2-Inhibitoren induzieren eine hungerähnliche Ketogenese. Unter katabolen Umständen wie kritische Erkrankung, Dehydrierung, perioperative Nüchternperiode oder „low-carb“-Fastendiät kann diese zu einer lebensbedrohlichen euglykämen Ketoazidose entgleisen. Hierzu tragen vermutlich die vermehrte Rückresorption von Ketonkörpern aus dem Primärharn sowie die Blockade von SGLT2-Rezeptoren auf α-Zellen des endokrinen Pankreas bei. Dies führt zur verstärkten Glukagonsekretion, die konsekutiv die Lipolyse und Ketogenese steigert. Die Inzidenz der euglykämen Ketoazidose als SGLT2-Nebenwirkung lag bislang bei 1–2 pro 1000 Behandlungsjahre. Belastbare „real-life“-Daten für das Risiko einer euglykämen Ketoazidose der neuen Indikationsgruppen liegen noch nicht vor; eine gute Kenntnis dieses Krankheitsbildes ist für die Intensiv- und Notfallmedizin zunehmend relevant. Das klinische Bild der euglykämen Ketoazidose ist ähnlich der klassischen diabetischen Ketoazidose bei Typ-1-Diabetes. Oft sind die Blutzuckerspiegel dabei hochnormal (nahezu euglykäm). Im Urinbefund zeigt sich trotz Euglykämie eine exzessive Glukosurie, während die Ketonkörper-Diagnostik falsch negativ ausfallen kann. Therapieansätze Der Blutzucker sollte bei euglykämer Ketoazidose durch gleichzeitige Insulin- und Glukoseapplikation zunächst auf leicht erhöhten Werten gehalten werden, um den intrazellulären Glukosebedarf zu decken und die Ketogenese zu unterbrechen. Der Volumenmangel wird durch balancierte kristalloide Infusionen ausgeglichen. Hierbei sind insbesondere das Risiko von Hypokaliämien sowie geminderte Volumentoleranz bei chronisch herz- und/oder nierenkranken Patienten zu beachten. Bei akuter Erkrankung und vor operativen Eingriffen sollten SGLT2-Inhibitoren vorsorglich pausiert werden („sick day break“).

Many mutant mouse strains display pathological behaviors, such as head tilts, head bobbing, or circling and waltzing, strongly suggesting that their vestibular system is impaired. Recently, Yoder and Taube studied head direction signals in tilted mutant mice, which have an impaired gravitation sensitivity in the vestibular periphery. Wojna polsko-sowiecka miała bezpośredni i ostateczny wpływ na kształt granic II RP. Wyjątkowo specyficznym teatrem działań wojennych był Front Poleski.
