Full textThis thesis is about the universality of conflicts and interactions between languages from primitive societies to more modern nations. The regions of Spain are considerably diverse, as much at the cultural level as in languages spoken. From a linguistic point of view, several languages coexist with Castilian (Spanish), which is the official language of the whole country. Within the autonomous community of Catalonia, the two co-official languages are Catalan and Castilian. Our thesis, entitled Social Environment and Bilingual Skills in the Baix Ebre (Tarragona) Region will attempt to uncover the knowledge of the Catalan language, held by the people of this region. As emphasized by Jean-Marie Klinkenberg, "Romance languages vary according to three axes, which are space, society and time".1 In a bilingual area, such as the region of Baix Ebre, where Catalan and Castilian are both considered the official languages, the two languages become entangled, and the language skills of the inhabitants are upended. We have to admit that languages are not static entities. They change, evolve, grow richer or weaken during the course of history according to events. In a multilingual region, it is interesting to put emphasis on the bilingual skills of the inhabitants. That is why we shall study the influence of the social environment on the language skills of the people of this region, as much in Catalan as in Castilian. For that purpose, it will be necessary to us to take into account the following elements: - The space, by interviewing persons living in three places geographically close to the region but sociologically dissimilar. - The society, through studies of the educational Catalan immersion policy, the familial environment, intergenerational exchanges and linguistic practices. - The time. We note that our study will employ a synchronic analysis of the languages, that is, a description of a language at a certain point in time. This is done while knowing that we are likely to return to a diachronic analysis to explain certain facts that are not explainable in a synchronic way. 1 In Des langues romanes. Full textThis dissertation explores the production of sarcophagi with sculpted decorations, through the comparative study of three Western towns of the Roman Empire that are economic and production centers as well as closely connected to Rome.Although in these regions, such funeral process was always in use, the generalisation of burials in the middle of the 2nd century required the mobilization of production and technical forces in order to meet the increasing new demand.We argue that three main centers located in Rome, Greece and Asia Minor were responsible for the development of this funeral technique: they decided on the decorations and designs, were in charge of the majority of the production and exportations, and gave this process its characteristics and meaning. Considering each city consecutively, we aim to show that the development of sarcophagi production goes beyond a traditional context where provinces would passively let more important cities be in charge of all the decisions. In addition to the technical, stylistic and iconographic analysis of the corpus, if we want to grasp the specificity of this funeral technique, we also need to replace its production and evolution in a local context of decentralized workshops. How do sarcophagi with sculpted decorations fit in an already existing production, and how do they transform such production? This will lead us to consider this technique from another point of view than the mere copy of an original model, thus moving from the unilateral model of a central influence on the peripheries to a structure of dynamic exchanges between main cities and local workshops

Full textThe main objective of this work is to identify the geometry that was used to design the layout of Tarragona’s Roman amphitheater. It follows a methodology that corresponds to the chapters in which the investigations is structured: historiography research, identification of the original structures, survey of in situ remains and, finally, graphic, statistic and constructive analysis of the proposed figures. Among the various options for the layout of Tarragona’s amphitheater, we believe that the most feasible is an ellipse drawn with a discontinuous method. Eight-centered ovals exhibit equivalent deviations, but require complex operations to achieve a layout similar to that of the ellipse. We have completely ruled out a four-centered oval layout.

Full textThis Doctoral Thesis is based on the study of the harbour air quality of Tarragona. To evaluate the air quality of harbour of Tarragona, the presence of different kind of organic atmospheric pollutants have been studied. On one hand, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organic volatile compounds and majority contaminants (NO2, NOx, SO2, CO, O3 and PM2.5 and PM10) have been determined. Moreover, analytical methods for determining poor studied compounds with toxic effects for human health have also been developed. For this, phthalate and organophosphate esters, N-nitrosamines and nicotine have been determined in air particulate matter and gas phase by gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Full textThis doctoral thesis explains the presence of the specific musical genres of opera and sarsuela in Tarragona, form 1850 to 1900. This research provides the information by which this study’s is going to validate our investigation premise that stated the facts around the lyric season in the fifty-one years studied. To find information we used chosen procedures, and applied quantitative and qualitative protocols described in different documents focusing on the analysis of all the data collected. It was possible to study the lyric seasons and their duration in the city because of lots of newspapers from those years that were kept and properly digitalized at the Archive Library of Tarragona (Biblioteca Hemeroteca Municipal de Tarragona). Most of them were carrying articles which talked openly and critically about the way the plays were performed. It was also possible to find some texts featuring everyday activities about the companies that staged their operas or sarsuelas in the city. Although we had found so much information it was impossible to describe or clarify every one of the lyric seasons, because there were problems with the preservation of some newspapers at the beginning of the studied period. Due to the overwhelming flow of information it was necessary to use charts for methodological and organizational purposes in order to make a reliable reading of all the lyrical events present in Tarragona those years. It was possible to make accounts for all the opening nights found, one world premiere sarsuela, repositions and repetitions numbered for all of them. As a result it was found more than 1800 lyric performances in Tarragona in fifty – one years.

Se estudia la evolución de la paleo laguna del Creixell mediante una reconstrucción geoquímica. El interés de la temática radica en que los territorios litorales son muy frágiles a los procesos oceanográficos, atmosféricos y geomorfológicos, pues corresponden a zonas de contacto e interacción litológica, marina y climática. El objetivo fue conocer y analizar la evolución de la paleo laguna del Creixell, para luego correlacionar los resultados con la morfodinámica del área de estudio, evidencias de ocupación del suelo, registros polínicos y paleoclimáticos. Para ello se extrajeron dos testigos cerrados (CR-20 y CR-21) los cuales fueron analizados geoquímicamente a través de espectrometría con el escáner XRF-core scanner; y para conocer el contenido de materia orgánica se aplicó el método de la pérdida por combustión (LOI, Loss On Ignition). Además se obtuvieron dataciones con C14 para conocer la edad de las muestras y se caracterizó la evolución climática gracias al proxy δ18O. Los resultados de los análisis geoquímicos se correlacionaron con las temperaturas del proyecto GISP2 (Alley, 2004) y así se caracterizó si las fases sedimentarias corresponden a períodos fríos o cálidos. También se utilizaron los estudios polínicos realizados por Burjachs y Schulte (2003) y Schulte (2003) con el fin de correlacionar las condiciones vegetales del área con la geoquímica. No obstante, en los últimos centímetros del perfil los análisis de polen no han sido satisfactorios, por lo que se recurrió a fuentes históricas de los siglos XII al XV. Los principales resultados sitúan el funcionamiento de la laguna en torno a los 5000 años cal B.P. El análisis geoquímico, cronoestratigráfico y de presencia de materia orgánica, ha permitido determinar 5 fases de sedimentación, caracterizadas por las variaciones del Ca, y de los grupos compuestos por una parte de TOC, Cl y S y por otra de Aluminio, Sílice, Potasio y Titanio. Además, las mayores concentraciones de Ca se corresponden con fases cálidas, las que son observables entre los 115 y 160cm; además de los 190 y 235 cm.
