Abstract:
This study, set within the contextual background of Victorian politics, ‘seeks to identify the economic, political and social implications of tariff protection for the Castlemaine region from 1870-1901. The introduction of the Victorian tariff in 1865 precipitated a reversal of earlier attitudes towards protection by politicians and their constituents. Reasons are sought for changes in the perceptions of the Castlemaine electorate and its political representatives towards the tariff between 1870 and Federation. An examination has been made of the role of the tariff in the creation of employment in the region’s primary and secondary industries together with its influence on politicians, primary and secondary industry leaders and workers. Also explored is the relative impact of the tariff on the economic performance of Castlemaine industries, whether producing for export or domestic markets.

This paper examines the relationship between tariffs and antidumping (AD) within the political economy of trade protection in South Africa. Using graphs, tables, panel data regressions and an application of the Grossman-Helpman model I build an understanding of the relationship between tariffs and AD. Findings are that AD has increased with the decrease in tariffs. However this relationship is not a clear-cut substitution from one trade remedy to another.

Karakoç, Ulaş. "Sources of economic growth in interwar Egypt and Turkey : industrial growth, tariff protection and the role of agriculture." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2014. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1047/.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents a paired case study of the growth performance of Turkey and Egypt in the interwar period, in order to shed fresh light on the income per capita divergence that occurred between them. First, we look at the extent and determinants of agricultural growth by estimating the net agricultural output and decomposing the crop output into its components. It is shown that acreage expansion, population growth and improvement in yields led to rapid recovery in agricultural output in Turkey, whereas the increasingly intensive cultivation in Egypt was only able to offset the impact of land scarcity and the earlier deterioration in yields. We also fill a major empirical gap in the literature by estimating industrial output growth and argue that although the industrial take off started in both countries in the 1930s, the output growth in Turkey was much greater. Moreover, industrialisation was mainly driven by textiles in Egypt, whereas it was more balanced in Turkey. Finally, we explore the sources of industrial output growth by focusing on textiles. The empirical analysis based on a partial equilibrium model implies that the impact of tariff protection on domestic growth was significant in both countries, yet it was complemented by the favourable movement of relative prices and wages and, in the case of Turkey, the increase in domestic incomes in the second half of the 1930s. Overall, it is argued that the greater expansion of domestic demand in Turkey, which was particularly driven by agricultural growth, was not only responsible for the per capita divergence, but also combined with different degrees of tariff protection to lead to a notable variation between Turkey and Egypt’s industrial performance. Therefore, the dissertation has implications for the experience of agricultural economies after the Great Depression. It is argued that in the presence of passive monetary and fiscal policies, factor endowments, historical development paths and geography played a prominent role in determining the extent of recovery in the 1930s.

High development of global economy causes the transboundary pollution. The regional trade agreement prevails at the moment, this paper extends north and south trade models of the two-country, various-good by Copeland and Taylor(1995), set up a oligopoly model of three-country, two-firm and adopt the trade structure of the third market. This thesis aims to examine the host country adopt the different alliance strategic(free to levy a tax, most favored nation treatment, free trade area) with a developed and undeveloped country on the consideration of environment protection, the influence of optimal tariff, level of output and social welfare, respectively. This paper adopt two kinds of extreme situations of pollution tax to tend to zero or infinite for the convenience of analysis that in the social welfare. We obtains the following conclusions: When pollution tax to tend to zero, the meaning of free to levy a tax and most favored nation, and the social welfare is the same. The meaning of free trade with B or C-country, and the social welfare is the same. When the host country’s government levies tax to two countries at the same time, the limited degree is relatively little, so the host country’s social welfare is relatively high. When pollution tax to tend to infinite, the host country's policy is unrestricted and make the social welfare reach highest in the situation of free to levy a tax; Average while levying tax freely that the tariff will be ordered, the host country’s policy is restricted at present, and social welfare will be reduced gradually in the situation of most favored nation treatment. When host country adopt free trade with C country that the limited degree is the greatest, so the host country’s social welfare will reach the minimum level.

Ziegler, Friedrich. "Consumer protection law in the ongoing European internal energy market by the example of the Electricity Directive 2009/72/EC." Doctoral thesis, 2014. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-342336.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the question about necessary conditions to achieve the objective of a high level of consumer protection in the context of the ongoing internal electricity market taking into account the grid-bound electricity supply, which is characterized by the natural monopoly of regulated networks as well as by competition for the homogeneous product electricity. It evaluates the relationship between effective competition and energy sector-specific consumer protection taking into account the energy-specific regulatory law and examines in detail the regulations of the Directive 2009/72/EC concerning consumer protection under the perspective of enabling the responsible and informed consumer to operate as a self-determined market participant and so shape the market actively towards its completion. After art. 114 TFEU as the existing central norm concerning the alignment of the internal energy market is distinguished from other possible competence rules like the new energy sector-specific competence title of art. 194 TFEU the requirements developed by the ECJ case law concerning art. 114 TFEU from the point of view of the energy sector-specific consumer protection are presented. The thesis clarifies both to what extent in Directive 2009/72/EC codified consumer rights are suitable to achieve...
