Abstract:
Though targeted attacks at schools are rare events, educators and behavioral health professionals working in those settings must evaluate threats and threatening situations when they occur. Schools across the world have experimented with different methods over time, but the threat assessment approach—particularly executed by an interdisciplinary team—has emerged as abest practice. This chapter describes the results of the Safe School Initiative, an in-depth case analysis of 37 targeted school attacks involving 41 attackers over a 25-year period, and their implications for understanding the attackers, the situations, the settings, and the targets. It addresses the continuum of threats that schools may encounter and offers some heuristics for decision making, including recent research on key indicators of intent. It concludes by emphasizing the need for schools to have incident and post-incident response plans to mitigate harm if an attack does occur.

Mevorach, Irit. Assessment of International Instruments. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198782896.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter assesses the key international instruments for cross-border insolvency, primarily the Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency (the MLCBI), and the related cross-border aspects of insolvency addressed in the Insolvency Standard. It also tentatively analyses the developments of additional instruments regarding enterprise groups and the enforcement of insolvency-related judgments. It considers how the MLCBI and complementary instruments fit into the normative framework proposed in the book. It asks to what extent the instruments follow modified universalism norms, thus contributing to the crystallization and development of customary international law (CIL). It also assesses: the choice of instrument; whether there are any issues with the design of the instruments taking into account the bounds on decision-making; and whether the instruments support the required levels of targeted harmonization to incentivize compliance. This chapter also assesses the specific instruments and measures that attempt to address the cross-border insolvency of multinational financial institutions (MFIs), particularly the Key Attributes, supporting principles, and contractual solutions.

Full text
Abstract:
The past two decades have seen great progress in recognizing the importance of inflammation in medicine. Increased focus on inflammation in both prevention and treatment has improved outcomes and quality of life in chronic diseases. Science has improved our understanding of inflammation’s many causes and effects on health, and many advances have been made in the availability of targeted therapeutic options for treating inflammation. This chapter gives an overview of recognizing the many causes of inflammation, its many targeted treatments strategies, and the questions that still surround it. It discusses several integrative approaches to reducing inflammation, including exercise, diet, and different strategies for managing sleep, mood, and stress, such as meditation and massage.

Escher, Beate, Peta Neale, and Frederic Leusch. Bioanalytical Tools in Water Quality Assessment. IWA Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2166/9781789061987.

Full text
Abstract:
The first edition of Bioanalytical Tools in Water Quality Assessment was released in 2012. The field has exploded since and the second edition updates and reviews the application of bioanalytical tools for water quality assessment including surveillance monitoring. The book focuses on applications to water quality assessment ranging from wastewater to drinking water, including recycled water, as well as treatment processes and advanced water treatment. Emerging applications for other environmental matrices are also included. Bioanalytical Tools in Water Quality Assessment, Second Edition, not only demonstrates applications but also fills in the background knowledge in toxicology/ecotoxicology needed to appreciate these applications. Each chapter summarises fundamental material in a targeted way so that information can be applied to better understand the use of bioanalytical tools in water quality assessment. The book can be used by lecturers teaching academic and professional courses and also by risk assessors, regulators, experts, consultants, researchers and managers working in the water sector. It can also be a reference manual for environmental engineers, analytical chemists and toxicologists. ISBN: 9781789061970 (Paperback) ISBN: 9781789061987 (eBook)

Abstract:
Neuromodulation options that exist for chronic pain treatment include targeted intrathecal drug delivery, spinal cord stimulation, deep brain stimulation, cortical stimulation, and peripheral field stimulation. This chapter focuses on the neuromodulation technique of targeted intrathecal drug delivery. The chapter provides a brief overview of the history and focuses on clinically relevant discussion of patient selection, trialing, surgical technique, and other important topics for establishing a high-quality targeted intrathecal drug delivery program in this evolving age. The key to success with neuromodulation and targeted intrathecal drug delivery is patient selection. Appropriate pre-implantation screening and behavioral health assessment are critical. The choice of agent and route of delivery may play key roles in therapy success.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we discuss prospects for a future computational neuropsychology. Computerized approaches to assessment, the ability to implement life-like scenarios in a controlled virtual environment, and teleneuropsychology offer promise for expanding available approaches to cognitive remediation and self-monitoring. Computational models are also available increasingly for integrating neuroimaging into the assessment process. Neuropsychologists can use neuroimaging to develop new frameworks for neuropsychological testing that are rooted in the current evidence base on large-scale brain system interactions. This will allow for traditional assessment of discrete areas of neurocognitive functioning to be brought in line with recent findings that highly nuanced relations exist among brain networks. Furthermore, the new findings from systems neuroscience may allow for the development of neuropsychological assessments with greater accuracy and increased targeted testing. Neuroinfomatic approaches offer computational neuropsychology an approach to knowledge sharing via well-defined neuropsychological ontologies and collaborative knowledgebases.

Full text
Abstract:
The newly introduced Specialty Certificate Examinations are a compulsory component of assessment for all UK medical trainees and represent the final examination barrier before getting the certificate of completion of training. This book provides a unique exam-specific revision guide for the Respiratory specialty certificate exam. Comprising of best of five test multiple choice questions and revision notes to facilitate targeted study, Revision Notes for the Respiratory Medicine Specialty Certificate Examination is the only book you need to prepare for this important examination. Questions are based around clinical scenarios and supplemented with images of radiological investigations such as x-rays, and lung function tests. Each question is structured as in the exam itself. The second half of the book comprises of a series of tutorials covering key areas and difficult concepts assessed in the examination including respiratory infection, respiratory malignancy, industrial lung disease, sleep disorders, standard respiratory tests and medical statistics. The combined approach allows trainees to become acquainted with the "best of five" format and facilitate recognition of areas of weakness and targeted study.

Abstract:
Biomarkers and cancer defines these markers and outlines their role in diagnosis, prognosis, prediction of response, and response assessment of a variety of cancers. Established biomarkers are reviewed, and the potential for development of new biomarkers offered by the dramatic progress in both the understanding of molecular biology and the development of laboratory techniques is emphasised. The field of signal transduction has already proved fruitful, with identification of markers allowing successful targeted therapy in a range of cancers. Progress is anticipated also in tumour imaging, with developments in both MRI and PET. Areas of clinical interest are summarised for breast, lung, colorectal, renal, and CNS malignancies.
