Abstract: Although he measures up in terms of virtues and deeds, the emperor of late antique panegyrics cannot be seen as a classical hero. This paper will ask why, before considering how in fact the imperial persona of the panegyrics was critical in the creation of the late antique epic hero. Bien qu’il en soit à la hauteur de par ses vertus et ses exploits, l’empereur des panégyriques de l’Antiquité tardive ne peut pas être vu comme un héros classique. Abstract:

The elaboration of anti-heretical views in late Antiquity ; Debates and internal quarrels have been an opportunity for the primitive Church to progressively elaborate its doctrine. The confrontation with various tendencies among Christianity has created a rich literary production starting from the II th century. It has given birth to a new literary style : heresy science, which developed in two different directions : controversy, which aimed at disproving the positions differing from the orthodox line of conduct defended by the Church and the catalogue aiming at describing the different heresies in order to throw them out of Church. The heresy science built motives and figures that can be found among the various authors who illustrated it. After having reminded us of the meaning of hairesis and secta, and the evolution of these words according to heresy science, this study finds recurrent patterns through significant pages by Irénée de Lyon, Tertullien, and Jérôme. It offers some keys to reading heresy science texts and enhances the way writing gives controversy several figures and motives which allow it to fully discredit heretics.

AbstractThe Mediterranean economy was retracting from the mid-sixth century while the Sasanian economy was expanding. Six trends are identified during Late Antiquity that extended into the Islamic period: (1) the development and spread of large estates with tenant labor, (2) the monetization of the economy, (3) the development and spread of irrigated agriculture, (4) the revival of mining, (5) the emergence of merchant diasporas, and (6) the domination of Indian Ocean commerce by Persian shipping. It is argued that these trends were strongest in Sasanian territory where the economic system identified as "Islamic" originated. À partir du milieu du sixième siècle l'économie méditerranéenne connaissait une régression alors que celle de l'Empire sasanide était en plein essor. Durant l'époque de l'Antiquité tardive et au cours de la période islamique, six tendances peuvent être relevées: 1) le développement et la diffusion des grands domaines avec fermiers à bail; (2) la monétarisation de l'économie; (3) l'extension de l'agriculture irriguée; (4) la revivi fication du secteur minier; (5) l'émergence des diasporas commerciales; et (6) la domination commerciale de la marine perse dans l'Océan indien. Selon notre analyse, ces tendances étaient plus fortement ressenties en territoire sasanide où le système économique dit "islamique" connut le jour.

Abstract:

Cet article propose une analyse du peuplement rural tardoantique (IIIe -VIIe siècles) dans l’espace situé entre l’Èbre et la chaîne des Pyrénées, une aire d’étude qui n’a pas bénéficié jusqu’à présent de synthèse archéologique sur le peuplement à cette période. En traitant les données avec un SIG, l’article vise à cerner les dynamiques spatiales et temporelles du peuplement rural durant l’Antiquité tardive. Le corpus d’étude est composé de données obtenues grâce aux rapports de fouille, d’archéologie préventive et programmée, et aux prospections, afin d’établir une première approche du peuplement en prenant en considération tous les renseignements disponibles. Nous allons corréler différentes variables spatiales et temporelles : l’intensité du travail archéologique, le potentiel agricole, l’espacement entre les sites, l’altitude, la distance par rapport aux voies de communication (fluviales et viaires), l’évolution de la représentation de sites dans le système de peuplement. La dynamique des sites est aussi étudiée en prenant en compte leur fonction (villae, fermes, nécropoles, etc.). Les résultats de ces études statistiques fournissent une première approche des dynamiques de la zone étudiée. Ainsi, on constate un tournant qui s’opère au Ve siècle : nous observons un changement significatif dans la dynamique du peuplement ainsi qu’une réduction drastique des sites ruraux actifs. Cela permet de bien distinguer deux modèles de peuplement : Le premier, un modèle compris entre le IIIe siècle et la première moitié du Ve siècle et, le second, pour la période comprise entre la fin du Ve siècle et le VIIe siècle. Cette brève contribution a pour but de revenir sur une question soulevée par Miguel Herrero de Jáuregui (« Christian Assimilation of “Pagan” Elements : An Apologetic Concept ? », New Perspectives on Late Antiquity, edited by David Hernández de la Fuente, Cambridge, 2011, p. 380-392), à propos de la façon dont les historiens de l’Antiquité tardive envisagent les contacts ou échanges entre Juifs, chrétiens et païens et, plus particulièrement, les phénomènes d’acculturation ou d’appropriation culturelle. Cette question est abordée à la lumière de la figure d’Orphée, dont Miguel Herrero se sert pour illustrer sa thèse dans le domaine de l’iconographie religieuse, alors qu’il recourt à d’autres thèmes ou motifs pour vérifier son hypothèse dans la sphère des rites et de la poésie. La question soulevée est de savoir si l’opinio communis selon laquelle certains éléments de la culture païenne ont été « assimilés » à et par la culture chrétienne (et peut-être juive avant elle) est une représentation biaisée qui se fonde sur une construction apologétique plus ou moins inconsciente ou s’il s’agit d’une réalité culturelle historiquement attestée.

Abstract: The complex ironies of Carmina Anacreontea ( CA ) 11 stem from the fact that Anacreon's imitator (mis)uses tropes of erotic attraction magic, seeking to stimulate "bitter" desire in himself with a fiery spell performed at once by and against himself, leaving him with no escape from the eros he counterintuitively demands. To effect his ironically tortuous aim, the speaker of CA 11 plays on the archaic Anacreon's intimate yet contentious relationship with Eros, as represented in his surviving poetry and in anecdotes that speak to his reputation in later antiquity. Réesumé: Les ironies complexes du poème 11 des Carmina Anacreontea ( CA ) sont basées sur le fait que l'imitateur d'Anacréon utilise (mal) les lieux communs de la magie érotique; il cherche à susciter un désir amer en lui-même par un sort virulent jeté par lui-même sur lui-même, ce qui le laisse sans échappatoire face à l' eros qu'il appelle à l'encontre de ses intérêts. Afin de parvenir à son but ironiquement alambiqué, le locuteur de CA 11 joue sur la relation intime et pourtant conflictuelle de l'Anacréon archaïque avec Eros, telle que représentée dans les poèmes préservés d'Anacréon et dans les anecdotes entourant sa réputation dans l'Antiquité tardive.

Abstract:

This article explores Muslim attitudes towards asceticism in the second/eighth and third/ninth centuries by examining the famous Prophetic hadith: “Every community has its monasticism, and the monasticism of my community is ǧihād.” The hadith serves as a lens for assessing several broader phenomena, including early Muslim views of Christian monasticism, the rejection of celibacy in Islamic culture, and the promotion of a new code of sexual ethics in the post-conquest Middle East—what this article terms the “second sexual revolution of Late Antiquity.” It concludes by presenting several accounts of Christian monks who converted to Islam and joined the ǧihād, as well as Muslim soldiers who converted to Christianity and became monks. Cet article analyse les attitudes des musulmans vis-à-vis de l’ascétisme aux deuxième/huitième et troisième/neuvième siècles en examinant le fameux hadith du Prophète : « Chaque communauté a sa forme de monachisme et le monachisme de ma communauté est le ǧihād ». Le hadith sert comme fenêtre pour évaluer plusieurs phénomènes plus larges, dont les points de vue des premiers musulmans sur le monachisme chrétien, le rejet du célibat dans la culture islamique et la promotion d’un nouveau code d’éthique sexuelle dans le Moyen Orient après la conquête – ce que cet article désigne par l’expression « seconde révolution sexuelle de l’Antiquité tardive ». Abstract:

For the last few years, vegetarianism has been a social issue and at the center of ethico-ecological debates. Whereas the term exists since the 19th century, many vegetarians affirm that the practise exists already in Antiquity and use great philosophical figures as examples. It is indeed indisputable that the abstinence from meat existed in Antiquity, however this subject has been little exploited by historians. Considered for a long time as a marginal topic with a more philosophical than historical significance, the ancient vegetarianism aroused only tardily and recently the interest of researchers. This paper proposes to examine the historiography of this topic by showing how research on food, on sacrifice and on animals influenced research on ancient vegetarianism.

<p><strong>Resumo: </strong>O presente artigo busca explorar questões historiográficas concernentes ao período da Antiguidade Tardia, localizando a criação e fluidez de identidades como um dos principais focos de análise. Para apreciação analítica e problematização deste panorama, apresentamos um estudo de caso específico: a relação entre ostrogodos e hunos nos séculos V e VI. Argumentando em favor de uma relação tribal muito mais intensa do que se imagina, visamos apresentar problemas retóricos na documentação e propor uma abordagem que forneça novas perspectivas para a historiografia ostrogótica e, ao mesmo tempo, abra espaço para revigorados estudos acerca de identidades na Antiguidade Tardia e Primeira Idade Média.</p><p><strong>Palavras-chave</strong>: Ostrogodos – Hunos – Etnicidade – Antiguidade Tardia.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract: </strong>The present article aims to explore historiographical questions concerning Late Antiquity, understanding the creation and fluidity of identities as one of the main analytical focuses for the period. To approach such panorama, a case study will be presented: the relation between Ostrogoths and Huns in the fourth and fifth centuries. Abstract:

A sixth season of excavation at the late Roman rural estate of Gerace (Enna province, Sicily) took place in 2019. The principal goal, of completing the investigation of the bath-house of ca. 380 (first discovered in 2016), was achieved. A second cold pool of the frigidarium was excavated, and found to be very well preserved; in a secondary period, probably during construction, it had been made smaller than originally planned. Bricks underpinning its marble floor are, at ca. 65 cm square, among the largest known, and may document continuing use of the Doric foot measure (widespread in classical and Hellenistic Sicily) into late antiquity. The marble floor had been ripped up during the stripping process in the fifth century, when a bonfire was lit inside the pool. The caldarium also saw modification during construction (it too was made smaller than planned); its mosaic floor was smashed (although its design was recoverable) and all but one of the pilae stacks supporting the floor were removed during demolition. The opus signinum floor of an adjacent hot-water pool had been similarly destroyed. Its back wall was severely fractured by the earthquake that struck Gerace in the second half of the fifth century, possibly not before ca. ad 470. Part of its praefurnium was also excavated, but total exposure was hindered by the precarious state of the masonry. The exterior of the praefurnium of tepidarium 2 was also explored. Two successive water conduits were found to the north, and the water system for supplying the baths hypothetically reconstructed. An enigmatic apse belonging to another building, possibly mid-imperial, was also discovered. Finds in the baths included a new monogrammed tile stamp reading ANTONINI or similar, a leg of a marble statuette, and five chamber pots, four of them reconstructable entire. Four appendices contain reports on other ongoing research. Work on the animal bones include for the first time isotopic analysis of a sample; the number of equid bones continues to rise to unusually high levels for a Roman archaeological site in the Mediterranean. Continuing analysis of the carbonized wood has identified that the hypocaust fuel for the baths comprised oak and olive-tree cuttings. Investigation of a deposit inside one of the chamber pots has shown the presence of eggs of intestinal whipworm (and therefore of faeces), so proving the function of such vessels for the first time. Une sixième saison de fouilles sur le site du domaine rural romain d’époque tardive de Gerace (province d’Enna, Sicile) a eu lieu en 2019. L’objectif principal, à savoir compléter l’investigation des bains datant d’env. 380 apr. J.-C. (découverts en 2016), fut atteint. Un second bassin du frigidarium fut mis au jour et se révéla très bien conservé. Il avait été aménagé dans des dimensions moindres que celles initialement prévues, ce changement ayant probablement été opéré directement au moment des travaux de construction. Les briques qui sous-tendent son plancher en marbre sont, à env. 65 cm2, parmi les plus grandes connues, et peuvent attester de l’utilisation prolongée de la mesure en pied dorique (répandue en Sicile classique et hellénistique) jusque dans l’Antiquité tardive. Le plancher de marbre avait été arraché au Ve siècle lors du processus de décapage, lorsqu’un feu avait été allumé à l’intérieur du bassin. Le caldarium fit lui aussi l’objet de modifications au moment de sa construction (il fut lui-même réduit par rapport à son plan initial); son sol en mosaïque était fracassé (bien que sa conception ait pu être récupérée) et toutes les piles de pilae qui supportaient le plancher sauf une furent retirées au moment de la démolition. Le pavement d’ opus signinum d’un bassin d’eau chaude adjacent avait été détruit de la même manière. Son mur arrière avait été sévèrement fracturé par le tremblement de terre qui frappa Gerace durant la seconde moitié du Ve siècle (peut-être pas avant env. 470 apr. J.-C.). Une partie de son praefurnium fut également fouillée, mais l’exposition entière fut entravée par l’état précaire de la maçonnerie. L’extérieur du praefurnium du tepidarium 2 fut également exploré. Deux conduites d’eau successives furent retrouvées au nord, et le système d’alimentation en eau des bains a pu être hypothétiquement reconstitué. Une abside énigmatique appartenant à un autre édifice, datant possiblement du milieu de l’empire, fut par ailleurs mise au jour. Les découvertes dans les bains comprenaient une nouvelle marque d’étampe sur une tuile d’un monogramme indiquant ANTONINI ou similaire, une jambe d’une statuette en marbre et cinq pots de chambre, dont quatre étaient entièrement reconstructibles. Quatre annexes contiennent des rapports sur d’autres recherches en cours. Les travaux sur les os d’animaux comprenaient pour la première fois l’analyse isotopique d’un échantillon. Le nombre d’ossements d’équidés continue d’augmenter à des niveaux anormalement élevés pour un site archéologique romain en Méditerranée. L’analyse continue de bois carbonisé a permis d’identifier que le combustible de l’hypocauste pour les bains comprenait de chêne et des boutures d’olivier. L’analyse d’un dépôt à l’intérieur d’un des pots de chambre a révélé la présence d’œufs de trichocéphale intestinal (et donc d’excréments), prouvant ainsi la fonction de ces vaisseaux pour la première fois.

Our objective in this article is to point out Vegetius’ Epitoma rei Militaris as a military manual, that is, a type of discourse constructed in Late Antiquity in which the author presents himself as a master of warlike themes, interested in teaching readers and listeners techniques capable of resuming the glorious roman past in the field of martial disputes. From the use of the concept of cyclical time and the elaboration of sets of examples, facts, and mythological and historical characters, Vegetius produced a report that was based on traditional knowledge to guarantee the Romans the return of warlike victories in Late Antiquity. Nosso objetivo neste artigo é apontar o Compêndio Militar de Vegécio como um manual militar, isto é, um tipo de discurso construído na Antiguidade Tardia no qual o autor se apresenta como um mestre dos temas bélicos, interessado em ensinar aos leitores e\ou ouvintes técnicas capazes de retomar o passado glorioso romano no campo das contendas marciais. A partir do uso da concepção de tempo cíclico e da elaboração de conjuntos de exemplos, de fatos e de personagens mitológicos e históricos, Vegécio produziu um relato que se alicerçava em saberes tradicionais, no intuito de garantir aos romanos o retorno das vitórias bélicas na Antiguidade Tardia. <p><strong>Resumo:</strong> Esse artigo analisa a atuação do imperador Teodósio II (408-450) no conflito teológico que emergiu durante o seu governo e ficou conhecido pela historiografia como Controvérsia Nestoriana. Tal conflito foi protagonizado pelos bispos Cirilo de Alexandria e Nestório de Constantinopla, que divergiam acerca do relacionamento estabelecido entre as naturezas divina e humana do Cristo encarnado. Uma vez que formulações teológicas dessa natureza, na Antiguidade Tardia, serviam de suporte para formulações ideológicas de sustentação e unidade do poder imperial, pretendemos destacar o papel de centralidade do imperador como mediador desse conflito.</p><p><strong>Palavras-chave:</strong> Antiguidade Tardia – Conflito político-religioso-administrativo – Controvérsia Nestoriana.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong> This article analyzes the performance of the Emperor Theodosius II (408-450) at the theological conflict that emerged during his government and got notorious by historiography as Nestorian Controversy. Such a conflict was led by the bishops Cyril of Alexandria and Nestorius of Constantinople, who diverged about the relationship established between the divine and human natures of the incarnate Christ. <p><strong>Resumo: </strong>No contexto da Antiguidade Tardia havia um grande número de bárbaros nos territórios do Império Romano, que interagiam na sociedade e, principalmente, no meio militar romano. Acreditamos que esse contato com outras culturas ampliou o aparato político-cultural militar de todos os envolvido, de forma que essa confluência cultural fomentou novos conhecimentos e saberes. Sendo assim, nesse artigo pretendemos contrastar as imagens dos bárbaros nos relatos advindos do século IV <em>Res Gestae </em>de Amiano Marcelino e nos panegíricos políticos de Temístio, tendo o primeiro sido um militar e o segundo um filósofo da corte Imperial.</p><p><strong>Palavras-chave: </strong>Antiguidade Tardia – Bárbaros – Imagem – Amiano Marcelino – Temístio.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract: </strong>In the context of Late Antiquity there was a large number of barbarians in the territories of the Roman Empire, which interacted in society and especially among Roman military. Mon article porte sur les pèlerinages et les sanctuaires chrétiens du Proche- Orient du IVe au XVIIe siècle. Il propose une réflexion en quatre temps : premièrement, il vise à tracer l'historique de cette pratique depuis son apparition ; il a ensuite pour but de réfléchir sur l'acception théologique de cette pratique d'un point de vue chrétien depuis le IVe siècle, date de reconnaissance officielle du christianisme par l'Empire. Resumo: Este artigo pretende apontar os caminhos e descaminhos da tolerância e da intolerância religiosa no período denominado de Antiguidade Tardia, considerando, em especial, o trato do Império Romano em relação ao Cristianismo e a atitude deste último em relação aos demais grupos religiosos. Divide-se em quatro partes: na primeira, procura-se conceituar os termos tolerância e intolerância e sua pertinência para o período histórico em questão, procurando diferenciá-lo do seu uso na modernidade e na contemporaneidade; na segunda, apresenta-se a maneira como o Império Romano lidava com as questões religiosas, particularmente com o Cristianismo, levando em consideração o papel que a religião desempenhava na ordem política e social romana; na terceira, discute-se a postura cristã para com outras crenças e práticas religiosas, desde as suas origens até o período agostiniano; finalmente, na quarta parte, apresenta-se a contribuição de Agostinho de Hipona na consolidação da intolerância cristã em relação aos credos divergentes. Abstract: This paper highlights the ways assumed by tolerance and religious intolerance in the period known as Late Antiquity. It considers the treatment of the Roman Empire to the Christianity and the attitude of the latter to other religious groups, and has four parts. Firstly, it conceptualizes tolerance and intolerance and their relevance to the historical period in question, seeking to differentiate it from its use in modern and contemporary period. Secondly, it shows the way the Roman Empire dealt with religious issues, particularly Christianity, taking into account the role that religion played in Roman political and social order. Thirdly, it discusses the Christian attitude towards other religious beliefs and practices, since its origins until the Augustinian period. Abstract:

Entre as várias formas existentes de mobilidade no âmbito histórico, apresentamos neste artigo sobretudo a mobilidade política e religiosa na vida de um personagem que viveu no século IV e V d.C.: Jerônimo de Stridon. A sua atuação enquanto homem altamente erudito, produtor de diversas obras cristãs, as suas extensas viagens por terras ocidentais e orientais, a assunção de cargos importantes na sociedade romano-helenística e as pessoas com as quais conviveu, apontam para uma forte movimentação em sua trajetória, característica do período em questão, a Antiguidade Tardia. O percurso de Jerônimo enquanto um indivíduo híbrido - cristão devoto de formação clássica pagã, e homem político e religioso atuante em seu contexto, representam as particularidades da época tardo-antiga romano-oriental, sendo a mais importante, ao nosso ver, a intensa efervescência de ideias dentro de um panorama de transformações e readaptações.Palavras-chave: Jerônimo de Stridon, Mobilidade político-religiosa, Antiguidade Tardia. AbstractAmong the many existing ways of mobility in the historical ambit, in this article we present mainly the political and religious mobility into the life of a person who lived in the IV and V centuries b.C.: Jerome of Stridon. His acting as highly erudite man, writer of many christian works, his extense travels in western and eastern lands, the assumption in important functions in the roman-helenical society and the people he lived with, point to a strong movimentation in his trajectory, characteristic of the period in point, the Late Antiquity. Jerome’s path as a hybrid individual – devout christian with a classic pagan formation, and active political and religious man on his context, represent the particularities of the late-ancient roman-oriental age, being the most important, in our perspective, the intense effervescence of ideas inside of a panorama of transformations and readaptations.Key-words: Jerome of Stridon, Political-religious mobility, Late Antiquity.

<p><strong>Resumo: </strong>Neste artigo busca-se refletir acerca da construção de identidade entre o Imperador Constantino e os cristãos, a partir da análise das obras <em>História Eclesiástica</em> e <em>Vida de Constantino</em>, de Eusébio de Cesareia, um autor cristão de atuação significativa no século IV d.C. A imagem do Imperador Constantino, na historiografia clássica, esteve ligada a conversão ou não-conversão de Constantino ao cristianismo. E mesmo em trabalhos monográficos recentes, encontramos exemplos de constatações análogas. Na análise das obras citadas buscamos mais do que a exaltação da imagem de um imperador favorável aos cristãos ou um excelente articulador político. Identificamos em Eusébio a procura da construção de uma identidade entre figuras centrais da Antiguidade Tardia.</p><p><strong>Palavras-chave: </strong>Antiguidade Tardia – Imperador Constantino – Eusébio de Cesareia – Construção de identidade.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong> This paper aims to reflect on the construction of identity between the Emperor Constantine and Christians from the analysis of <em>Ecclesiastical History</em> and <em>Life of Constantine</em>, works of a Christian author of significant activity in the fourth century A.D., Eusebius of Caesarea. The image of the Emperor Constantine in classical historiography, was linked to conversion or non-conversion of Constantine to Christianity. And even in recent monographs, we find examples findings of the same parameters. In the analysis of works cited above we seek more than the exaltation of Emperor’s image favorable to Christians or a great political operator.
