Abstract:
Confined marine environments are particularly susceptible to climate change and anthropic pressures. Indeed, the long-term monitoring of benthic assemblages in these environments allows us to understand the direction of changes over time. The demosponge Geodia cydonium is a suitable study case, since it is widely represented in many Mediterranean environments, while being a long-living and important habitat-forming species. Here, we report the results of a descriptive study on temporal and spatial variations of this demosponge in three semi-enclosed environments along the Italian coast: Marsala Lagoon, Porto Cesareo Bay, and Mar Piccolo of Taranto. At Marsala and Porto Cesareo, the study compares the present data with those reported by the literature at the end of the 1990s. Caused by the modification of its preferential habitats, the data indicated the loss and a remarkable regression of this species at Porto Cesareo and Marsala, respectively. In addition, we hypothesized that the increase in severe weather phenomena in the small Bay of Porto Cesareo recorded during the last 20 years may have had a marked impact on water mass, thus affecting the sponge assemblages. At Taranto, despite a remarkable environmental degradation, G. cydonium has appeared stable and persistent in the last 45 years, thus representing one of the richest and most well-preserved populations in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract:
In this work, we use X and C-band SAR data provided by the COSMO-SkyMed and ENVISAT missions to detect and measure some ground deformation phenomena along six coastal areas of Italy. In particular, we exploit multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), i.e., small baseline subsets (SBAS) and interferometric point target analysis (IPTA) methods, to retrieve the deformation rate maps and time series for each investigated area. Multi-temporal InSAR analysis revealed local subsidence and uplifting effects in Ravenna Coastal Areas, Fiumicino, Campi Flegrei, Sibari Plain, Augusta Bay, and Taranto Gulf. Our work is meant as a demonstrator to show how InSAR-based analysis can provide a detailed understanding of the coastal hazards. Such analysis also opens up new monitoring scenarios such as the possibility of designing a near real-time surveillance service based on Sentinel-1 SAR data.

According to reports, the following 16 species have extended their distribution to other Mediterranean areas or have made a new appearance in other regions. The first category includes the following organisms: The rare and common Indo-Pacific seaweed Codium arabicum (Lebanese coasts), the acari Thalassarachna affinis (Marmara Sea), and the non-indigenous nudibranch Flabellina rubrolineata, which has also been found in many other areas of the Aegean Sea. In addition, the rare sea slug Thecacera pennigera (Piccolo of Taranto), the fangtooth moray Enchelycore anatina (National Marine Park of Zakynthos, Ionian Sea), the carangid Seriola fasciata (Gulf of Antalya), Lagocephalus sceleratus (SE. Ionian Sea), the reticulated leatherjacket Stephanolepis diaspros (Slovenia, N. Adriatic Sea), the marbled stingray, Dasyatis marmorata (NE Levantine), the starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias (Iskenderun Bay, NE Mediterranean), the cephalopod Ommastrephes bartramii (Ionian Sea) have also been reported. The Atlantic crab Dyspanopeus sayi has expanded to many Italian areas and the blue crab Callinectes sapidus to a lake in N. Greece and in the S. Adriatic Sea. Finally, Farfantepenaeus aztecus has been found in the Ionian Sea, thus showing its wide expansion in the Mediterranean. The larval stages of Faccionella oxyrhyncha have been found, after many years, in the Aegean Sea and the first report of an existence on intersexual acari Litarachna duboscqi in Split(Adriatic Sea) was reported.

As regards molluscs, the interesting findings include Ischnochiton usticensis in Calabria and Thordisa filix in the bay of Piran (Slovenia). The stomatopod Parasquilla ferussaci was collected from Lesvos island (Greece); the isopod Anilocra frontalis was observed parasitizing the alien Pteragogus trispilus in the Rhodes area. The asteroid Tethyaster subinermis and the butterfly ray Gymnura altavela were reported from several localities in the Greek Ionian and Aegean Seas. Number of the pink salmon fry migrating downstream from their spawning grounds in the control rivers in 2019 is assessed as 17546.2 . 103 and 14795.7 . 103 ind. for the Dagi and Bolshoi Khuzi Rivers (northeastern Sakhalin), as 89.1 . 103 and 2636.1 . 103 ind. for the Poronai River tributaries — the Kholodny and Orlovka, as 2759.8 . 103 and 21456.0 . 103 ind. for the Lazovaya and Pugachevka Rivers (western coast of the Patience/Terpeniya Bay), as 5803.8 . 103 and 19020.0 . 103 ind. for the Voznesenka and Ochepuha Rivers (southeastern Sakhalin), as 1822.4 . 103 and 2139.0 . 103 for the Taranai and Kura Rivers (Aniva Bay coast), and as 15834.1 . 103 and 7626.1 . 103 ind. for the Rybatskaya and Olya Rivers (Iturup Island), respectively. In all areas, the pink juveniles migrated from the spawning grounds earlier than usual, obviously because of accelerated development of the embryos in conditions of abnormally warm autumn. The number of juveniles migrated from all spawning grounds in the rivers of respective regions is estimated taking into account the escapement of pink salmon spawners and the downstream migration index determined for the control rivers (ratio of the spawners escapement and the number of subsequent downstream migrating juveniles): the total number for the natural spawning grounds is estimated as 1168.9 . 106 ind. for the rivers of the eastern coast of Sakhalin (including the Aniva Bay) and 471.1 . 106 ind. for the rivers of Iturup Island (Okhotsk Sea coast). Additional 141.3 . 106 ind. were released from artificial hatcheries of eastern Sakhalin and 122.0 . 106 ind. — from artificial hatcheries of Iturup Island. The downstream migration is considered as highly abundant for northeastern Sakhalin and Iturup Island, but is insufficiently abundant for the Patience/Terpeniya Bay and Aniva Bay where the landings of this generation should be limited. The pink salmon return to southeastern Sakhalin in 2020 is expected to be better than in 2018 due to satisfactory abundance of the juveniles from natural spawning grounds.

Abstract:
A high time-resolved monitoring campaign of bulk deposition of PAHs and metals was conducted near the industrial area and at an urban background site in province of Taranto (Italy) in order to evaluate the impact of the biggest European steel plant. The deposition fluxes of the sum of detected PAHs at the industrial area ranged from 92 to 2432 ng m−2d−1. In particular the deposition fluxes of BaP, BaA, and BkF were, on average, 10, 14, and 8 times higher than those detected at the urban background site, respectively. The same finding was for metals. The deposition fluxes of Ni (19.8 µg m−2d−1) and As (2.2 µg m−2d−1) at the industrial site were about 5 times higher than those at the urban background site, while the deposition fluxes of Fe (57 mg m−2d−1) and Mn (1.02 mg m−2d−1) about 31 times higher. Precipitation and wind speed played an important role in PAH deposition fluxes. Fe and Mn fluxes at the industrial site resulted high when wind direction favored the transport of air masses from the steel plant to the receptor site. The impact of the industrial area was also confirmed by IP/(IP + BgP), IP/BgP, and BaP/BgP diagnostic ratios.

Free-living nematodes were investigated in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Ionian Sea), a semi-enclosed basin of strategic importance for its complex productive infrastructure but in need of remediation due to the alarming amounts of heavy metals and synthetic organic contaminants in the sediments. Abundance, genera composition, biodiversity and trophic traits of nematodes were related to the gradual transition from marine to more brackish conditions and to the varying levels of contaminants in different sub-areas of the basin. Nematodes were more abundant and diverse at the most marine site while low numbers and diversity characterized the most contaminated station. Going towards the innermost part of the basin, gradually increasing values of abundance and biodiversity were observed although the assemblage was susceptible to the organic enrichment caused by mussel farms. The use of nematodes as ecological indicators mirrored the response of the assemblage to the main patterns acting in the basin (High/Good scores at the most marine site and Poor/Bad scores at the most contaminated station), giving a clear indication of environmental quality to stakeholders/authority that can contribute to address remediation actions in contaminated sediments.

Abstract:
The microelement composition of the organs and tissues of the summer Japanese Sea pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) which returned to the shores of Sakhalin Island after sea feeding: to the Aniva Bay (pre-estuary zone of the Taranay River) and to the southwestern coast abeam Nevelsk in June-July 2019 was assessed. The fish were dissected by organs and tissues on Sakhalin, the samples were frozen and delivered to Vladivostok for chemical analysis. All elements were determined from acidic mineralizates according to GOST 26929-94 on a Shimadzu AA 6800 atomic absorption spectrophotometer in a flame (Zn, Ni, Cu, and Fe) and in a graphite cell (Pb, Cd). Confirming the results of previous studies, it was found that the content of microelements in the Japanese Sea pink salmon, indicating anthropogenic (Zn, Cu) and technogenic (Ni) impact on the environment, significantly exceeded that in fish from the Sea of Okhotsk. The number of microelements in the organs and tissues of the Sea of Japan pink salmon, indicating anthropogenic and technogenic influence during the feeding period (Zn, Cu and Ni) exceeded the corresponding indicators in the Sea of Okhotsk pink salmon by several times, for example, Ni – by 5.4, Zn – 8.8 times. The Sea of Okhotsk pink salmon twice crossed the impact geochemical and high-feeding Kuril-Kamchatka zone during its life cycle, accumulating in its organs and tissues an increased content of lead and cadmium, witnesses of underwater and surface volcanism, as well as upwellings. The content of Pb and Cd, witnesses of the natural impact situation affecting the salmon stocks of the Sea of Okhotsk, was several times higher in the organs and tissues of the Kuril and Sakhalin (from the southeastern coast) pink salmon.

A novel high-resolution, eddy-resolving numerical model (LES-COAST) is used to investigate currents, mixing and water renewal in Barcelona harbour and Taranto bay. These environmental sites are of particular importance due to the interplay between touristic and commercial activities, requiring detailed and high-definition studies of water quality within the harbour. We use Large Eddy Simulation (LES) which directly resolves the anisotropic and energetic large scales of motion and parametrizes the small, dissipative, ones. Small-scale turbulence is modelled by the Anisotropic Smagorinsky Model (ASM) which is employed in presence of large cell anisotropy. The complexity of the harbour is modelled using a combination of curvilinear, structured, non-staggered grid and the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM). Both computation grids and harbour structures are purposely constructed for these applications by appropriate programs. Boundary conditions for wind forcing at the free surface and currents at the inlets of the port are obtained from in-situ measurements (for the case of Barcelona harbour) or by nesting this numerical model into a coastal model (Taranto bay). In this dissertation thesis an important modification to LES-COAST is implemented and is proposed as a prototype scheme, namely the possibility to consider the effect of surface waves in coastal semi-closed areas. Particularly, a linear formulation of the free surface boundary condition is considered, which would be able to reproduce the presence of seiches and tides on the dynamics of the area under investigation. The methodology is validated against analytical solution for a stationary oscillating surface wave in a simple computational grid.In both harbours considered, first- and second-order statistics, such as the mean velocity field, turbulent kinetic energy, and horizontal and vertical eddy viscosities are calculated and their spatial distribution is assessed. Water residence time is also considered for the two coastal semi-closed areas examined. Finally, the LES solution is validated against available field data.The study shows the presence of sub-surface elongated rolling structures (with a time scale of a few hours), contributing to the vertical water mixing. The time-averaged velocity field reveals intense upwelling and downwelling zones along the walls of the harbours. The analysis of second-order statistics in these harbours shows strong inhomogeneity of turbulent kinetic energy and horizontal and vertical eddy viscosities in the horizontal plane, with larger values in the regions characterized by stronger currents. The water renewal within the port is quantified for particular sub-domain regions, showing that the complexity of the harbour is such that certain inner basins of Barcelona harbour have a water renewal of over five days, including its yacht marina area, and over seven days for Taranto bay. For the Barcelona simulation, the LES solution compares favourably with available current-meter data; it is also compared with a RANS solution obtained in literature for the same site under the same forcing conditions, the comparison demonstrating a large sensitivity of properties to model resolution and frictional parametrization.

An in-depth study of all Tarantino’s feature films to date (from Reservoir Dogs to The Hateful Eight), Quentin Tarantino: A Poetics and Politics of Cinematic Metafiction argues that, far from wallowing in narcissism and solipsism, a charge directed not only at Tarantino but at metafiction in general, these self-conscious fictions do more than just reflexively foreground their status as artefacts; they offer metacommentaries that engage with the history of cultural representations and exalt the aesthetic, ethical and political potential of creation as re-recreation and resignification. By combining cultural studies and neo-formalist approaches, this book seeks to highlight how intimately the films’ poetics and politics are intertwined. Each chapter explores a specific salient feature, some of which have drawn much academic attention (history, race, gender, violence), others less so (narrative structure, style, music, theatricality). Ultimately, Quentin Tarantino: Poetics and Politics of Cinematic Metafiction places Tarantino’s films firmly in the legacy of Hawks, Godard, Leone and the New Hollywood, and revises the image of cool purveyor of pop culture the American director cultivated at the beginning of his career by foregrounding the breadth and layeredness of the films’ engagement with cultural history, high and low, screen and print, American, East Asian and European. The films produced by the Tarantino team are formal invitations for viewers to similarly engage with, and reflect on, the material, and delight in doing so.

This chapter walks us backwards on the path of French prose translations of Virgil, from Paul Veyne to Jacques Perret. While Clément-Tarantino emphasizes that Veyne’s fluid and vivacious translation rekindled the interest of the French-reading public in Virgil, she also analyses the principles behind Perret’s translation of the Aeneid in the context of his book Latin et culture. In this work, which elaborates on the ?art of translation?, Perret considered attention to the philological and prosodic intricacies of the source text to be the main goal for the ‘ideal translator’; yet he decided to translate the Aeneid in prose. Perret’s translation of the Aeneid for Les Belles Lettres serves the goal of facilitating the reading of Virgil in Latin; by contrast, Veyne distanced himself from philological scrutiny, offering instead the renewed pleasure of reading Virgil in French.

Exploring different scales of time from a Southern Hemisphere perspective, with a special emphasis on issues of Indigeneity and the Anthropocene, The Planetary Clock offers a wide-ranging, revisionist account of postmodernism, reinterpreting literature, film, music, and visual art of the post-1960 period within a planetary framework. By bringing the culture of Australia and New Zealand into dialogue with other Western narratives, it suggests how an antipodean impulse, involving the transposition of the world into different spatial and temporal dimensions, has long been an integral (if generally occluded) aspect of postmodernism. Taking its title from a clock designed in 1510 to measure worldly time alongside the rotation of the planets, The Planetary Clock ranges across well-known American postmodernists (John Barth, Toni Morrison) to more recent science fiction writers (Octavia Butler, Richard Powers), while bringing the US tradition into dialogue with both its English (Philip Larkin, Ian McEwan) and Australian (Les Murray, Alexis Wright) counterparts. By aligning cultural postmodernism with music (Messiaen, Ligeti, Birtwistle), the visual arts (Hockney, Blackman, Fiona Hall) and cinema (Rohmer, Haneke, Tarantino), The Planetary Clock enlarges our understanding of global postmodernism for the twenty-first century.

This chapter talks about the initial reception of the film and its rise to cultdom. It discusses how a film that gets prematurely dismissed as bad is able to rise above by gaining some high profile and highly vocal supporters. One such supporter that was cited was Quentin Tarantino who mentioned The Thing as an inspiration to Reservoir Dogs. The chapter states that this was a crucial stage in the film's journey from flop to classic. It discusses how The Thing qualifies as a cult film citing its budget, its approach to goriness, and its troubled production story. It also discusses the transformations the film had to go through as it was transferred for home-video release, and for cable TV. The chapter describes the film's reception in the 1990s and the decades that have followed. It also discusses the film's influence on films and TV shows in the 2000s.

Abstract:
Meristems were the central issue of our project. Genes that are required for cell division, cell elongation, cell proliferation and cell fate were studied in the tomato system. The analysis of the dUTPase and threonine deaminase genes, along with the dissection of their regulatory regions is completed, while that of the RNR2 and PPO genes is at an advanced stage. All these genes were isolated in our laboratory. In addition, 8 different MADS box genes were studied in transgenic plants and their genetic relevances discovered. We have also shown that a given MADS box gene can modify the polarity of cell division without affecting the fate of the organ. In vivo interaction between two MADS box genes was demonstrated and the functional dependency of the tomato agamous gene on the TM5 gene product established. We have exploited the Knotted1 meristematic gene in conjunction with tomato leaf meristematic genes to show that simple and compound leaves and, for that matter, sepals and compound leaves, are formed by two different developmental programs. In this context we have also isolated and characterized the tomato Knotted1 gene (TKnl) and studied its expression pattern. A new program in which eight different meristematic genes in tomato will be studied emerged as a result of these studies. In essence, we have shown that it is possible to study and manipulate plant developmental systems using reverse genetic techniques and have provided a wealth of new molecular tools to interested colleagues working with tomato. Similarly, genes responsible for cell division, cell proliferation and cell fate were studied in Arabidopsis floral meristems. Among these genes are the TSO1, TSO2, HANABA TARANU and UNUSUAL FLORAL ORGANS genes, each affecting in its own way the number of pattern of cell divisions, and cell fate, in developing Arabodopsis flowers. In addition, new methods have been established for the assessment of the function of regulatory gene action in the different clonal layers of developing floral meristems.
