Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the contested nature of landscape in New Zealand and on the complex relationships and social processes that are associated with that contest. This includes relationships between people as well as relationships between people and land. A landscape may be seen as a culmination of lived daily experience that acts as a repository for our memories of events and experiences to which we are connected. As we remember or forget our experiences or events, we construct narratives relating how we are tied to our landscape and what that may mean. This becomes a compounded process as more than one group adds different stories that are vying to be told. Even though New Zealand is a post-colonial nation, neither the groups involved, nor their stories can be divided between primordial categories like colonial or Indigenous. Following this, the anthropology of the State informs us that the State is not a unified organization, but rather is imagined as such through our daily experience with individual institutions that are associated with it. Therefore, the struggle here, I will argue, is between multiple agents that are attempting to position themselves in relation to each other and their shared, multilayered landscape. According to Bourdieu (1998), the lesser goal of this struggle is to maintain or gain social position in relation to the other groups; the greater goal is the ability to reproduce the landscape according to their own interests. In order to do so, groups agree to the value of resources, which Bourdieu calls capital, and then struggle for the ability to control them or direct their use. This thesis aims to explain how those groups move toward those goals. More specifically, I address these issues through my fieldwork with Maori from Onuku on Banks Peninsula, New Zealand and three non-Maori organizations that are involved with the site. My interviews and observations with participants focused on the site of Takapuneke, which was the location of a massacre of the Onuku communityʼs relations in 1830. This site was chosen because of an initial threat of development that would have destroyed its inherent meaning to the local Maori community. My fieldwork will analyze that data to understand the Onuku Runangaʼs (council) construction of Takapuneke as tapu, which is often taken to mean ʻsacredʼ. My analysis will also show the constructions of the site as strictly historical by the non-Maori organizations and the perceptions behind those constructions. I find that the outcome of these complex relationships over the site of Takapuneke is that there is no determined result to the struggle that has been and continues to take place over the issues around the site. These issues are in process just as are the constructions of the landscape and the relationships between all of those involved. While there has been a stabilization of the situation, which I will discuss, that is merely temporary due to the fact that the groups involved have varying amounts of agency (and capital) that they can exercise in order to continue the struggle when the conditions benefit them.

Abstract:

This study explores whakapapa as a tool, which can be used as a kaupapa Māori assessment framework in early childhood education, positioning kaupapa Māori theory as a paradigm base underpinning a philosophical and theoretical discourse towards assessment for children's learning. This thesis represents the culmination of a personal and professional journey, derived from the writer's longstanding interest in and commitment to kaupapa Māori early childhood education, and more specifically, philosophies and practices for assessment in this context. The study has canvassed a vast terrain of kaupapa Māori philosophy in its search for a theoretical grounding for a kaupapa Māori assessment framework for early childhood education. Foundation to the study has been the premise that the notion of whakapapa serves as an overarching philosophical matrix, encompassing the interconnected realms of genealogy, spirituality, and knowledge that precede, surround, and embrace the Māori child. Throughout the thesis, diagrams are employed to demonstrate and model the whakapapa underpinning the conceptualisations being explored. After contextualising the study within a historical overview of the impact of colonisation of kaupapa Māori education and research, it is suggested that a re-examination of key concepts from tikanga Māori will illuminate transformative possibilities applicable to the study's focus on the development of a theoretical base for an assessment tool within kaupapa Māori early childhood settings. Drawing from the literature, the thesis re-positions the view of the Māori child to one of being nurtured within a philosophical construct underpinned and immersed in tikanga such as whakapapa, ira tangata, whanaungatanga, mana and tapu, and ako, providing a strongly Māori theoretical base for the envisioning of the assessment process. The outcome of this study is to propose an assessment framework, which embodies and reflects these core kaupapa Māori philosophies as praxis.

Abstract:

Marxian mode of production analysis is a way of examining the composition of a society. Using this methodology an analysis of Maori society focussing on the Ngai Tahu tribe has demonstrated inconsistencies in the model but also provided a coherent structure for historical analysis of European-Maori relations. The direct relationship of the ideological structure with the forces of production was found to be a feature of the pre-capitalist mode of production (PCMP). This represents a departure from the ideal model. It was also found that the relationship between capitalism and the pre-capitalist mode has varied through five distinct periods. The spatial economy of Ngai Tahu has changed accordingly. The precapitalist ideological structure endured assimilation and has been crucial in leading modem Maori development. Consequentially the contemporary articulation of the PCMP and the capitalist mode of production has led to the development of an emerging mode of production Communal Capitalism. This mode is characterised by local development articulated with pre-capitalist relations and represents a spatial expansion of the Ngai Tahu economy.

Abstract:

Syftet med uppsatsen har varit att identifiera var i det personliga köket som slösaktigt beteende sker och att designa en produkt som gör det lätt för användaren att agera på ett mindre slösaktigt sätt. Genomgående i arbetet var det två områden inom design som var i fokus, Design för Hållbart Beteende (DfSB) och Användarcentreraddesign (ACD). Informationsinsamlingen bestod av åtta kontextuella intervjuer som gav en djup förståelse för de områden där vi människor agerar slösaktigt i det personliga köket och hur detta agerande relaterar till användarvänlighet och teorier kring Design för Hållbart Beteende. De områden som identifierades var slöseri vid användandet av förbrukningsvaror och i vattenanvändningen. Återanvändning av de stora mängder vatten som används valdes som området att arbeta vidare med då det på grund av den rådande torkan var det område där störst potential ansågs finnas för att göra skillnad. Utifrån problemområdet som valdes genomfördes en designprocess baserad på Roozenburg och Eekels grundläggande designcykel (1995). Designprocessen slutade i en produkt som gör det lättare för användaren att ta till vara på vatten vid köksarbete. Produkten är lättillgänglig och uppmanar till användning samt ger användaren möjlighet att leda om vattenflödet till en vattenbehållare belägen under diskhon med hjälp av ett reglage beläget på diskbänkens ovansida. Arbetet uppnår sitt syfte i att komma fram till en produkt som gör det lätt för användaren att agera på ett mindre slösaktigt sätt och bidrar med kunskap om hur man kan påverka användare till att agera mer hållbart genom design. The purpose of this essay was to identify where in our personal kitchens we act in a wasteful manner and to design a product that makes it easier for us to act in less of a wasteful way. Throughout the entire process, there were two main areas in design that were in focus, Design for Sustainable Behaviour and User-centered design. The research face consisted of eight contextual interviews that gave the researcher a deep insight into in which ways people act wastefully in their personal kitchens and how these actions relate to usability and theories about design for sustainable behaviour. The areas that were identified were that users acted wastefully in the use of consumable goods and in the use of water. Due to the current drought, it was wastefulness in regard to the reusing of water that was deemed to be the problem area where the designer had the highest potential to make a difference. The designer went through a design process based on Roozenburg and Eekels basic design cycle (1995) in order to come up with a product that solves the chosen problem. The design process finalized in a product that makes it easier for the user to reuse otherwise wasted water whilst working in the kitchen. The product allows the user to redirect the water flow in the pipes under the sink in order to save the water in a separate container, this is done through the act of pushing down a controller situated on the sink. The project fulfills its purpose in producing a product that makes it easier for users to act in a less of a wasteful manner and contributes knowledge about how a user can be affected to act in a sustainable way through design.

Abstract:

Many of the recent improvements in the capacity of data cartridge systems have been achieved through the use of narrower tracks, higher linear densities and continuous servo tracking with multi-channel heads. These changes have produced new tribological problems at the head/tape interface. It is crucial that the tribology of such systems is understood and this will continue since increasing storage capacities and faster transfer rates are constantly being sought. Chemical changes in the surface of single and dual layer MP tape have been correlated to signal performance. An accelerated tape tester, consisting of a custom made cycler ("loop tester"), was used to ascertain if results could be produced that were representative of a real tape drive system. A second set of experiments used a modified tape drive (Georgens cycler), which allowed the effects of the tape transport system on the tape surface to be studied. To isolate any effects on the tape surface due to the head/tape interface, read/write heads were not fitted to the cycler. Two further sets of experiments were conducted which included a head in the tape path. This allowed the effects of the head/tape interface on the physical and chemical properties of the head and tape surfaces to be investigated. It was during the final set of experiments that the effect on the head/tape interface, of an energised MR element, was investigated. The effect of operating each cycler at extreme relative humidity and temperature was investigated through the use of an environmental chamber. Results showed that cycling improved the signal performance of all the tapes tested. The data cartridge drive belt had an effect on the chemical properties of the tape surface on which it was in contact. Also binder degradation occurred for each tape and appeared to be greater at higher humidity. Lubricant was generally seen to migrate to the tape surface with cycling. Any surface changes likely to affect signal output occurred at the head surface rather than the tape.

Se revisa la experiencia en el tema de algunas naciones, observando sus resultados en cuanto a costos y tiempos de ejecución de la regulación, así como sus formas de organización. Abstract:

Raupatu (conquest of land) has been and still is a threat to the sovereignty and self-management of the Maori people. For the people of Waikato, raupatu has had such a significant impact that it has become a part of the people's identity. The New Zealand Land Wars of the 1860s signalled the beginning of the troubles for Waikato that would plague them for generations. Many Waikato people died for the land that had once nourished them, which was 'stolen' by the Crown and its colonial forces under the guise of 'confiscation' by way of the New Zealand Settlement Act 1863. This thesis examines raupatu in relation to the Waikato people, and the effects raupatu has had on them. This thesis also illustrates the connection between the Waikato people and whenua tupu (ancestral lands) through countless generations of people who committed their lives to the struggle to have their lands returned as proclaimed in the decree 'i haere whenua atu, me hoki whenua mai.' This decree is examined in relationship to the Deed of Settlement 1995 whereby the Crown addressed the grievances of the Waikato people and some hope was once again instilled within the people.

Abstract:

This research is concerned with ethnic identity and focuses on the experiences of my tribe, the Ngai Tahu of the South Island of New Zealand, as a case study. Material drawn from interviews with eight Ngai Tahu respondents are used to illustrate the factors influencing Ngai Tahu identity, which include whakapapa, land, language, tikanga, mahinga kai, the Claim, our legal identity, and the perceptions of significant others. These factors are discussed within the context of the wider Maori identity and the New Zealand environment. The interviews also provide an insight into the personal nature of Ngai Tahu cultural identity and the experiences of the respondents in terms of inclusion and exclusion from the general Maori identity. A theoretical base on the issues of cultural identity development is gained from the literature and used as a framework for discussing Ngai Tahu identity development. This research investigates the development of pan-Maori identity and how it has manifested itself within New Zealand society. The cultural criteria used to measure and assess membership in the Maori ethnic collective are often inadequate and inappropriate for Ngai Tahu and within the Ngai Tahu context. This research illustrates how the environment and the choices it offers to people of Ngai Tahu identity both in the past and the present. I will argue that Ngai Tahu identity is largely a product of its circumstance. Although primordialist notions such as whakapapa are consistently present in that identity, the weight that they carry is largely determined by the political and cultural environment and context. The project concludes with an assessment of the level of appreciation given to differences that exist within different sections of Maoridom and the need to understand the validity and legitimacy of those differences if a positive sense of cultural identity is to be achieved.

In un contesto socio-economico sempre più complesso, caratterizzato da una sempre più marcata globalizzazione ed una accelerata innovazione tecnologica, le imprese sono costrette ad incrementare il livello di conoscenza dei propri clienti e di quelli potenziali, rafforzando contestualmente le relazioni durevoli con questi. Inoltre è necessario, affinché un'impresa sopravviva e sviluppi, accrescere il grado di differenziazione della propria offerta rispetto ai concorrenti, grazie a modelli di business innovativi, che mirino alla massimizzazione del valore percepito dell'azienda. In uno scenario di ipercompetizione come quello attuale questo vale tanto per le imprese produttrici di beni e servizi di consumo, quanto per le imprese operanti nei mercati delle commodities. Mentre nei mercati B2C la strategia aziendale vive facilmente di strumenti quale il marketing e di tutti gli approcci che mettono al centro il brand dell'impresa, nei mercati B2B questi aspetti sembrano non essere una prerogativa aziendale. Tradizionalmente i mercati B2B, non hanno mai attribuito una particolare rilevanza ad una strategia che ponga al centro il brand, in quanto i clienti non sono i consumatori finali. Questa percezione del business risulta essere una visione miope della realtà, incapace di capire l'importanza di una strategia che esprima nel modo più efficace possibile la proposta di valore realizzata dall'impresa. La strategia aziendale deve coinvolgere tutte le variabili critiche e tutta la struttura organizzativa aziendale; deve nascere ed essere implementata mediante un approccio olistico, che contempli una visione d'insieme in grado di creare coerenza all'interno e all'esterno dell'impresa e che quindi garantisca una forte identità aziendale riconosciuta nel mercato. L'obiettivo di questo scritto è evidenziare come un'impresa operante nel mercato B2B possa assumere connotati tipici delle imprese attive nei mercati B2C, mediante una strategia aziendale innovativa che mette in primo piano l'identità aziendale. Un modello di business che si colloca tra queste due realtà è definibile nella forma innovativa B2B2C, in quanto pur mantenendo una clientela differente dal consumatore finale, impiega gli stessi sforzi nella costruzione di un brand riconosciuto nel mercato per i propri valori. Successivamente ad un'introduzione teorica della forma innovativa B2B2C, verrà affrontato il caso aziendale di Tapì, impresa che ha abbracciato questa filosofia, implementando negli anni una strategia olistica, che nasce da una visione chiara e da una forte identità aziendale.

This dissertation investigates the process of collaboration and the application of both notational and technological schemes to integrate elements of contemporary composition and tap dance as a consolidated art form. Overall, this document gives an overview of choreographer/composer collaborations in Western classical music; movement notation; and ultimately analyzes my original music—a live set for tap dancer, live musicians and electronics—entitled Digital Tap Dance. Altogether, this project represents the culmination of music and dance as a compelling intermedia collaboration. By (1) researching different practices of composer-choreographer collaborations, (2) notating rudiments for tap dance, (3) creating software for tap dancers, and (4) composing original music for tap dancers, this dissertation will create options for composers and choreographers alike in composition and improvisation.

Abstract:

We consider propagation of high-energy earth-skimming taus produced in interactions of astrophysical tau neutrinos. For astrophysical tau neutrinos, we take generic power-law flux, E-2 and the cosmogenic flux initiated by the protons. We calculate tau energy loss in several approaches, such as dipole models and the phenomenological approach in which parametrization of the F-2 is used. We evaluate the tau neutrino charged-current cross section using the same approaches for consistency. We find that uncertainty in the neutrino cross section and in the tau energy loss partially compensate giving very small theoretical uncertainty in the emerging tau flux for distances ranging from 2 to 100 km and for the energy range between 10(6) and 10(11) GeV, focusing on energies above 10(8) GeV. When we consider uncertainties in the neutrino cross section, inelasticity in neutrino interactions and the tau energy loss, which are not correlated, i.e. they are not all calculated in the same approach, theoretical uncertainty ranges from about 30% and 60% at 10(8) GeV to about factors of 3.3 and 3.8 at 10(11) GeV for the E-2 flux and the cosmogenic flux, respectively, for the distance of 10 km rock. The spread in predictions significantly increases for much larger distances, e.g., similar to 1, 000 km. Most of the uncertainty comes from the treatment of photonuclear interactions of the tau in transit through large distances. We also consider Monte Carlo calculation of the tau propagation and we find that the result for the emerging tau flux is in agreement with the result obtained using analytic approach. Our results are relevant to several experiments that are looking for skimming astrophysical taus, such as the Pierre Auger Observatory, HAWC and Ashra. We evaluate the aperture for the Auger and discuss briefly application to the other two experiments.

Abstract:

Dette er en kvalitativ studie med intervju som metode. Studien har tatt for seg det interkulturelle motet i offentlig sektor, hvor informantene har vart NAV-ansatte i Sor-Trondelag. Studien er blitt designet for a kunne si noe om hvordan de NAV-ansatte opplever og forstar det interkulturelle motet. Malet har vart a kunne sette data fra intervjuene i sammenheng med NAV som institusjon. Det er gjort lydopptak av intervjuene, og de er transkribert ordrett. Analysen av dataene har skjedd trinnvis, med utgangspunkt i Giorgis fenomenologiske analysemodell. I analysen har jeg kombinert perspektiver fra fenomenologisk sosiologi og samtaleanalyse, med et sarlig utgangspunkt i sosiolog Alfred Schutz' relevansbegrep. Slik har jeg kunnet handtere kompleksiteten i dataene, slik dataene har gjort seg gjeldende for problemstillingen. De framtredende funnene er disse: Kulturrelaterte utfordringer er ikke satt i system; informantene ser ikke ut til a vare forent i handteringen og forstaelsen av hva et interkulturelt mote innebarer. Informantene er samstemte i forstaelsen omkring spraklige utfordringer – det ser ut til at NAV har satt de spraklige utfordringene i et system som er kjent og velbrukt av de NAVansatte: De spraklige utfordringene er mer eller mindre handterlige. Toleransebegrepet ser ut til a vare en felles verdi, men uten en felles forankring. Forstaelsen av toleransebegrepet ser ikke ut til a forenes med kulturell kompetanse; toleranse som verdi blir av flere informanter sett pa som synonymt med at ulikheter skal ignoreres. Informantene er stort sett samstemte i sine utgreiinger om spraklige utfordringer i interkulturelle moter, og synes at de tilgjengelige ressursene pa dette omradet har lettet arbeidet. De etterspor imidlertid mer interkulturell kompetanse i arbeidet. It is a qualitative study of NAV employees using in-depth interviews. The study is designed with the purpose of extracting the NAV employees' experience and understanding of the intercultural encounter. The aim has been to assess the data as expressions of both the employees' experiences and NAV's institutionalized cultural competence. The interviews are recorded, and transcribed verbatimely. The analysis of the data has been incremental, with a basis in Giorgis model for fenomenological analysis. In the analysis perspectives from fenomenological sociology and conversation analysis are combined, with Alfred Schutz' theories of relevance as the central perspective. This approach has made the complexity of the data manageble. The significant findings of the study are: Culturally related challenges are not dealt with systematically; the informers do not seem to be unified in dealing with and understanding of what the intercultural encounter entails. The informers are unified in their understanding of lingual challenges. It appears that NAV has systematically adressed the lingual challenges, and that the concerned tools and resources are well known and used by the employees; the lingual challenges are more or less manageable. The notion of tolerance seem to be a shared value, yet without a common grounding. The understanding and application of the tolerance value seem difficult to unify with cultural competence; the tolerance value is by several informers viewed as synonymous with ignoring differences. The informers are generally coherent in their statements about lingual challenges in intercultural encounters, and feel that the available resources in this area facilitate their work. They request, however, more intercultural competence in their work. Fundamentalmente, ela é caracterizada por mecanismos que promovem a superação da otimalidade local. Esses mecanismos geralmente tomam a forma de parâmetros que impõem restrições à seleção de movimentos. Como a calibragem desses elementos restritivos tem um impacto fundamental no desempenho do algoritmo, algumas implementações utilizam estratégias que provocam alterações sistemáticas nos valores de determinados parâmetros. Estas estratégias procuram intensificar a exploração de regiões promissoras e o abandono de regiões onde possibilidades de melhoria parecem mínimas. As alterações nos valores dos parâmetros são normalmente acionadas por fases de busca caracterizadas pela ausência de movimentos de atualização da solução incumbente. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é o de propor uma nova abordagem adaptativa de metaheurísticas Tabu. A abordagem HTA, aqui considerada, propõe que a alteração de parâmetros seja determinada a partir da identificação de padrões da trajetória de busca recentemente traçada. Estes padrões fornecem indicações, ainda que limitadas, acerca da topologia do espaço de soluções. Para cada padrão, são aplicadas perturbações nos valores de parâmetros tabu selecionados, como forma de adaptar a busca às diferentes condições encontradas. A abordagem HTA foi desenvolvida a partir de extensos experimentos com o Problema do Caixeiro Viajante Simétrico e Euclideano (PCV). Testes envolveram 12 instâncias clássicas e verificaram ganhos significativos em relação à versão não-adaptativa, mesmo sob condições operacionais estressantes impostas por parâmetros mantidos fora de controle. A seguir, a mesma abordagem foi aplicada ao Problema de Roteamento de Veículos (PRV). Neste trabalho, apresentamos os resultados obtidos com 14 instâncias clássicas caracterizadas por diferentes restrições. Os resultados foram comparados com os de três algoritmos altamente competitivos e indicaram que HTA produz soluções de qualidade comparável aos demais. São também apresentados os resultados obtidos com uma implementação adaptativa HTA para o Problema de Agrupamento Capacitado (PAC). Os resultados, mais uma vez, sugerem que a introdução de mecanismos adaptativos baseados em padrões da trajetória da busca é uma estratégia robusta e promissora Abstract: Tabu Search (TS) is a general heuristic procedure for guiding search to obtain good solutions in complex solution spaces. Fundamentally, it is characterized by mechanisms that allow the exploration of the solution space beyond local optimality. These mechanisms are generally implemented by means of parameters which impose restrictions to move selection. Since the calibration of such restrictive elements has a major impact on the algorithm's performance, some implementations use strategies for altering the values of these parameters whenever non-improving search phases are verified. Essentially, these strategies seek to intensify the exploration of promising regions of the solution space, and to abandon the search in regions where improvement possibilities seem to be minimal. The main purpose ofthis work is to propose a new adaptive Tabu metaheuristic approach. The HTA approach, considered here, assumes that the alteration of the parameters values should be defined first by identifying specific pattems in the search trajectory recently described. These pattems provide indications of the solution space topology. For each pattem, perturbation on the values of selected tabu parameters is applied, as means to adapt the search to the different conditions found. The HTA approach was developed from extensive experiments with the Symmetric and Euclidean Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Tests involved 12 benchmark instances and verified improvements with respect to a non-adaptive implementation, even under stressing operational conditions provided by free-Junning parameters. HTA was also applied to the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). We present the results obtained for 14 benchmark instances characterized by different restrictions. Our adaptive implementation is compared to three highly competitive algorithms. The results indicate that HTA is able to provide solution quality levels comparable to the other algorithms. We also present the results provided by an HTA implementation for the Capacitated Clustering Problem (CCP). Metodologia: Pesquisa computadorizada nas bases de dados Pubmed/Medline e PEDro para identificar estudos que avaliassem a eficácia e os efeitos do tape rígido em pacientes com síndrome de impingement subacromial. Resultados: Nesta revisão foram incluídos 6 artigos envolvendo 366 indivíduos, com classificação metodológica de 6,25 para os estudos randomizado e de 7,5 para os estudos de coorte na escala Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). Dos estudos selecionados, três analisaram o efeito do tape rígido na escápula durante um tratamento de fisioterapia, um estudo avaliou o efeito do tape rígido de um modo isolado, um outro comparando o membro com SIS com o membro contralateral e um último com uma população sem patologia. Conclusão: O tape rígido desempenha um papel importante na correção postural, na facilitação dos movimentos, na redução da dor e na atividade muscular. Nesta revisão, com os estudos analisados, vimos que aplicação de tape rígido parece ter efeitos e eficácia apenas durante um curto prazo. Objective: To understand the effectiveness of rigid tape application during a physiotherapy treatment, or as an isolated physiotherapeutic technique, in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome. Methodology: Research in computerized data bases Pubmed/Medline e PEDro to identify studies evaluating the efficacy and effects of rigid tape during a physiotherapy treatment or as an isolated physiotherapeutic technique in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome. Results: This review included 6 articles involving 366 individuals with methodological classification of 6,25 for randomized controlled trials and of 7,5 for cohort studies in the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) scale. From the analyzed studies it was found that three analyzed the effect of rigid tape in the scapula during a physiotherapy treatment, one study evaluated the effect of solo rigid tape application, another compared the involved limb with SIS with the uninvolved limb and the last compared using a healthy population. Conclusion: The rigid tape plays an important role in postural correction, facilitating movements, reducing pain and muscle activity. In this review, with the studies analyzed, we have seen that rigid tape application seems to have effects and efficacy only for a short time. N/A

Este problema envolve a determinação do instante de início das atividades com o objetivo de minimizar o tempo de término do projeto. Diversas extensões do problema clássico têm sido consideradas na literatura para modelar problemas reais. Uma destas extensões é o problema abordado neste trabalho, denominado problema generalizado de programação de projetos com restrição de recursos. O problema generalizado considera duas extensões do problema clássico. A primeira envolve relações de precedência representadas por intervalos mínimos de tempo entre início de duas atividades, que são importantes em ambientes de produção ¿make-to-order¿, quando existe um tempo de preparação de máquina independente da seqüência entre duas atividades. A segunda extensão consiste de disponibilidade de recursos variante no tempo, que incorpora situações em que somente um subconjunto do total da mão-de-obra ou de máquinas está disponível devido a férias ou manutenção. Devido à alta complexidade combinatória do problema, utilizam-se métodos heurísticos para a resolução de problemas de porte real. Algoritmos que combinam conceitos de busca tabu e busca tabu reativa são propostos e implementados computacionalmente. O desempenho destes é comparado com um algoritmo de busca tabu reativa da literatura Abstract: The classical resource constrained project scheduling problem consists of activities with fixed duration and subject to precedence relations, which compete for limited resources. This problem involves the determination of the starting time of the activities in order to minimize the completion time of the project. Several extensions of the classical problem have been addressed in the literature to model real problems. One of these extensions is the problem tackled in this work, named generalized resource constrained project scheduling problem. The generalized variant considers two extensions in relation to the classical problem. The first one involves the representation of precedence relations among activities, by means of a minimum time interval between two activities, which is important in the make-to-order production setting, when a machine setup time is incurred between the processing of two activities. The second extension considers that the resource availability is time varying, which represents the situation where only a subset of the total manpower and machines is available due to vacation or maintenance. Due to the high combinatorial complexity of this problem, heuristic methods are used to solve real size problems. Algorithms that combine concepts from tabu search and reactive tabu search are proposed and computationally implemented. However, their requirements have undergone complete changes. More and more, the large “dinosaur type recorders” are superseded by new technologies, but when it comes to recording large data volumes over a long time the magnetic tape cannot be replaced by alternative recording methods. The following presentation will introduce magnetic tape units based on the 4 mm digital audio tape. This family of units has achieved large importance during recent years, since the DAT tape units have very small dimensions and can be used for all purposes. Depending on the application, analog and digital magnetic tapes are used. Thanks to the use of digital signal processors the system specifications could be improved to a considerable extent. Multi-channel analog recorders operate with digital signal processing. The transmission characteristics concerning amplitude and phase errors were improved such that the residual error can be neglected during daily metrology work. Furthermore, automatic calibration improves system accuracy and simplifies the units’ maintenance.

A busca de melhores leiautes é um problema de otimizacao combinatoria que surge em uma grande variedade de contextos de planejamento espacial, como no leiaute de departamentos em uma industria. Como nao existe algoritmo de otimizacao conhecido que obtenha uma solucao otima global em tempo polinomial, usam-se metodos heuristicos. Estudamos o assunto aplicando a seguinte sequencia de passos para um dado problema: 1) Geramos uma solucao inicial atraves do procedimento de aglomeracao; 2) Geramos uma outra solucao inicial, recolocando as facilidades aleatoriamente; 3) Aplicamos a busca tabu as duas solucoes iniciais geradas; 4) Comparamos os resultados obtidos no passo 3. Este procedimento é aplicado a quatro casos: os de 12, 15, 20 e 30 facilidades. No espaco destinado a alocacao das facilidades ja existiam areas ocupadas e que nao podiam ser utilizadas pelas facilidades, o que aumentou consideravelmente a dificuldade de tratamento do problema. Comparando os leiautes iniciais produzidos no passo 1 com os produzidos no passo 2, concluimos que o procedimento de aglomeracao gerou leiautes iniciais de melhor qualidade. No passo 4, percebemos que a busca tabu, quando aplicada a solucao inicial produzida pelo passo 1, gera leiautes finais de qualidade ligeiramente superiores aos obtidos, quando este procedimento é aplicado a solucao inicial produzida pelo passo 2. Concluimos que independentemente da qualidade da solucao inicial, a busca tabu é uma heuristica eficiente no processo de busca. The search of better layouts is a combinatorial optimisation problem that arises in a wide variety of spacial planning contexts, in looking for a Layout of departments industry. Since no polinomial-time algorithm for attainning a global optimal solution is known some heuristics techniques are used. We study this subject, for a given problem, performing the following steps: 1) We generate an initial solution by using a clustering procedure; 2) We generate another initial solution, rearranging them randomly; 3) We apply the tabu search to the two initial solutions generated above; 4) We compare the results obtained in the step 3. The procedure is applied to four cases, namely, those with 12, 15, 20 and 30 facilities. In the space assigned to facilities there were occupied areas and the facilities cannot be used there, so we increased the difficulty of the problem. When we compared the initial layouts obtained in step 1 with the obtained in step 2, we conclued that step 1 obtained better layouts. From step 4, we conclued that the tabu search obtained sligthly better final layouts when applied to initial solutions generated in step 1 than those obtained starting from solutions generated in step 2. So we conclude that tabu search is an efficient search procedure independent of the quality of the initial solution.

Pracę chciałabym podzielić na dwie części. Pierwszej nadać charakter terminologiczny i systematyczny. Istotną kwestią będzie w niej zebranie informacji na temat definicji transgresji, rozumienia i ewolucji jej znaczenia. Postaram się przybliżyć stanowiska badaczy, kształtujące się na przestrzeni lat. Chciałam przedstawić różne podejścia naukowców, autorów i badaczy, ich interpretacje i ocenę koncepcji transgresji, a przy tym wyłonić rys historyczny. W części teoretycznej chciałam zawrzeć również najważniejsze koncepcje dotyczące zagadnień transgresyjnych, które pojawiły się także (oprócz akademickiego) na gruncie literackim. W mojej pracy równie istotnym zadaniem będzie charakterystyka i opis zjawiska New French Extremity. Chciałabym zebrać i skatalogować informacje o przebiegu działalności reżyserów związanych z New French Extremity. Przedstawić sylwetki twórców i ich specyficzną, autorską wizję kina i drogę do „filmowej ekstremy”, którą rozumieją bardzo indywidualnie. Udowodnić, że marginalizowana tendencja w kinie francuskim przyczyniła się do rozprzestrzenienia i pokazywania (kopiowania?) zjawiska w kinie europejskim, a nawet światowym. W drugiej części, analitycznej chciałbym poprzez subiektywny wybór filmów przedstawić jak wygląda kwestia podejścia do (antropologicznego) tabu, jego odważnego przekraczania (tożsamego z transgresją) zmian jakie nastąpiły w wyniku postępu cywilizacji. Równocześnie żeby móc „przekraczać” należy określić granice, normy, ramy, systemy społeczne – te chciałabym spróbować wyłonić z antropologii, historii kultury i cywilizacji oraz europejskiej tradycji. W części analitycznej chciałabym poruszyć również te najbardziej nurtujące i kontrowersyjne kwestie, najczęściej odsłanianie przez francuskich reżyserów, a zarazem będące wyznacznikiem Nowej Francuskiej Ekstremy – seksualność, przemoc, przemoc seksualna, odmieńców, śmierć, relacje kazirodcze, kanibalizm. Skonfrontować je z wybranymi obrazami, formą prezentacji i interpretacją sugerowaną przez samych twórców, przedstawicieli New French Extremity. Oprócz charakteru akademickiego chciałabym, by moja praca była refleksją na temat zmian mentalności człowieka, pytaniem o etykę ludzką, o granice kultury, o proces dehumanizacji, wyzbycia się ograniczeń moralnych oraz o kierunek, którym podąża człowiek, a w ślad za nim kino.

Através da coleta de narrativas e da elaboração de histórias de vida, analiso as categorias nativas relacionadas a estes deslocamentos. Divido os exemplos de deslocamentos territoriais em dois tipos principais, trabalhando com os conceitos de mobilidade e migração para distinguir circularidade entre aldeias e movimentos migratórios. A inserção destes dados à discussão teórica sobre a busca da terra sem mal dá-se pela confirmação de que há um forte substrato cosmológico na instauração e ordenação destes movimentos. Porém, meus dados apontam que a deflagração de um deslocamento passa pela associação de vários outros motivos, como questões políticas e familiares. Os eventos que aparecem como deflagradores de deslocamentos com mais recorrência são os problemas com suas terras: ausência de demarcação, conflitos gerados por coabitação com outras etnias, expulsão e violência por parte da sociedade nacional. Outra recorrência são os deslocamentos realizados com a finalidade de estruturar redes de reciprocidade e arranjos matrimoniais que deslocam vários jovens em idade de casamento. Neste contexto, os deslocamentos territoriais mostram-se também como estratégias de manutenção de seu modo de ser, de seu "sistema" cultural, o nhanderekó, perante as inúmeras situações adversas a ele que as famílias Guarani enfrentaram e têm enfrentado.

Bakgrund: Alzheimers sjukdom (AD) är neurodegenerativ och kännetecknas framför allt av det tidiga symtomet minnesförlust. De patologiska skadorna i hjärnan utmärks av senila plack och neurofibrillära nystan (NFTs). Senila plack består av peptiden amyloid-b (Ab) och NFTs innehåller proteinet tau. Ab har länge stått i fokus när det kommer till patogenesen vid AD och forskning kring behandlingsstrategier mot sjukdomen har länge riktat sig mot denna peptid, men än så länge utan lyckade resultat. Mer fokus har riktats till tau och i nuläget finns det ett antal tau-riktade behandlingsstrategier under utveckling och tau-immunoterapi är en av dessa. Syfte: Idag finns det inte någon behandling som botar AD vilket betyder att det är viktigt att hitta nya behandlingsstrategier mot sjukdomen. Tidigare studier tyder på att tau är ett potentiellt mål för behandling mot AD och syftet med detta arbete var därför att undersöka om tau-immunoterapi är en möjlig behandlingsstrategi vid AD. Metod: Sekundärdata samlades in från databasen PubMed. Datan granskades och bedömdes som användbar eller inte. Detta resulterade i att sju orginalartiklar valdes till arbetet, sex studier i djurmodeller och en klinisk studie. Resultat: Studierna i djurmodellerna visade att tau-immunoterapi reducerade patologiskt tau och i hälften av studierna observerades även en förbättring av de kliniska symtomen. Den kliniska studien visade att AADvac1 är säkert och ansågs vara en lovande kandidat för vidare studier. Slutsats: Resultaten från studierna visar att tau-immunoterapi är en lovande behandlingsstrategi vid AD. Trots detta krävs det fler kliniska studier som undersöker tau-immunoterapi för att säkerställa om behandlingen har någon klinisk effekt på patienter med AD eller inte.

Situe dans la plaine fertile du djallalabad actuel (nagarahara de l'antiquite), hadda a du en partie sa prosperite a sa position geographique favorisee par les routes reliant les grandes villes et lieux saints du bouddhisme. Lui meme une des places importantes dans laquelle des reliques du buddha etaient gardees devint un centre religieux et artistique de renom. Tauopathien sind Krankheiten, die mit einer abnormen intrazellulären Tau-Protein-Faltung, Tau-Protein-Aggregation und Filament-Bildung im ZNS und PNS einhergehen. Die Alzheimer Demenz stellt die häufigste Tauopathie dar. Bei ihr kommt es zu einer intra- und extrazellulären Ablagerung fehlgefalteter amyloidogener Proteinaggregate, welche durch β Amyloid und Tau gebildet werden. Es resultiert eine Neurodegeneration. Ein multifaktorieller Prozess führt bei den Tauopathien zur Umwandlung des Tau-Proteins hin zu unlöslichen Fibrillenbündeln. Primär kommt es zur Bildung eines Dimers, das durch Disulfid- und Wasserstoffbrückenbindungen stabilisiert wird. Durch die Zusammenlagerung mehrer Dimere entstehen Tau-Oligomere. Diese gelten als die neurotoxischen Komponenten. Die Primärstruktur des Tau-Proteins beeinflusst den Aggregationsprozess. Dabei spielen die Anwesenheit der Aggregationsdomänen PHF6* und PHF6 und die Anzahl der Cystein-Seitenketten überragende Rollen. In dieser Arbeit wurden durch ortsspezifische Mutagenesen Tau-Konstrukte generiert, die sich in ihrer Anzahl der Aggregationsdomänen und der Cystein-Reste unterschieden. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Aggregationstendenz der Tau-Proteine mit nur einer Aggregationsdomäne und keinem Sulfhydryl-Rest stark sinkt. Auch durch Veränderungen des Redoxmilieus lässt sich das Tau-Aggregationsverhalten beeinflussen. Es wurde gezeigt, dass die Substanz TCEP als starkes Reduktionsmittel die Aggregation der 2 humanen Tau-Isoformen 2N3R und 2N4R wirkungsvoll inhibiert. Auch GSSG als Oxidationsmittel verhinderte in bestimmten Konzentrationen die Aggregation dieser 2 Isoformen. Es wird angenommen, dass die Verhinderung der Bildung einer intermolekularen Disulfidbrückenbindung zu diesem Phänomen führt.

In this dissertation we expand on the study of Τn-factorizations or generalized integer factorizations introduced by D.D. Anderson and A. Frazier and examined by S. Hamon. Fixing a non-negative integer n, a Τn-factorization of a nonzero nonunit integer a is a factorization of the form a = Λ.a1.a2...at where t ≥ 1, Λ= 1 or -1 and the nonunit nonzero integers a1,a2,...,at satisfy a1 ≡ a2 ≡ ... ≡ at mod n. The Τn-factorizations of the form a = a1,a2,...,at (that is, without a leading -1) are called reduced Τn-factorizations. While similarities exist between the Τn-factorizations and the reduced Τn-factorizations, the study of one type of factorization does not elucidate the other. This work serves to compare the Τn-factorizations of the integers with the reduced Τn-factorizations in Z and the Τn-factorizations in N. One of the main goals is to explore how the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic extends to these generalized factorizations. Results regarding the Τn-factorizations in Z have been discussed by S. Hamon. Using different methods based on group theory we explore similar results about the reduced Τn-factorizations in Z and the Τn-factorizations in N. In other words, we identify the few values of n for which every integer can be expressed as a product of the irreducible elements related to these factorizations and indicate when one can do so uniquely.

Abstract:

Obiettivo: L’obiettivo dello studio è stato quello di comparare le tecniche chirurgiche TVT (tension free vaginal tape) vs. TOT (trans obturator tape) con un trial doppio cieco randomizzato per valutare il tasso di guarigione, le complicanze, la percentuale complessiva di soddisfazione e infine considerare le indicazioni in base alla severità della sintomatologia. Metodologia: Abbiamo reclutato tutte pazienti affette da incontinenza urinaria da stress sintomatica di grado 1 e 2 con Q-tip test > 1. I criteri di esclusione sono stati: pazienti con SUI di grado 3, Q-tip test =1, incontinenza urinaria da urgenza, prolasso associato, alterazioni neurovegetative, pregressa chirurgia o terapie medicali o riabilitative per SUI. La severità e il grado dell’incontinenza veniva presunta dai dati clinici. Le pazienti sono state randomizzate per ricevere un trattamento chirurgico con TVT o TOT e i risultati sono stati valutati ad un mese e ad un anno. Risultati: Abbiamo arruolato 104 donne. Differenze significative sono state trovate sui due gruppi per quanto riguarda, i tempi operatori, il numero di giorni di cateterizzazione e il dolore postoperatorio (maggiore per la TVT; p<0.05). Sebbene le complicanze nel postoperatorio, le percentuali di recidive e reinterventi sono risultati simili nei due gruppi, il grado di soddisfazione delle pazienti ad un mese e ad un anno dall’intervento è risultato significativamente differente se analizzato in accordo alla severità dell’incontinenza: le paziente con SUI 1 hanno apprezzato maggiormente la tecnica chirurgica della TOT e le pazienti con SUI 2 maggiormente la TVT (p<0.001). Conclusioni: La scelta tra TOT e TVT non è completamente simile. In accordo al grado di soddisfazione, il TOT sembra più indicato nella SUI di tipo 1 e la TVT nella SUI di grado 2. Sebbene la percentuale di ostruzione urinaria e di recidiva di malattia nelle due tecniche non siano risultati differenti queste hanno influenzato significativamente il grado di soddisfazione delle pazienti in base al grado di severità della SUI. Objective: The aim of our study was to compare tension-free vaginal (TVT) vs. trans-obturator tape (TOT) technique on a double blind randomised trial to evaluate cure rates, complications, overall satisfaction rates and after stratification according to symptoms severity. Methods: We recruited all patients affected by symptomatic SUI grade 1 and 2 and Q tip test > I. Exclusion criteria consisted in patients with SUI grade 3, Q tip test =1, urge incontinence, associated prolapses, neurovegetative disorders, previous surgery for SUI or under rehabilitative or medical therapies. SUI grade of severity was recorded as well as clinical data. Patients were randomized to receive TOT or TVT and results assessed at one month and one year. Results: We analysed 104 women. Significant differences were found between TOT and TVT groups regarding the operating times, number of catheterization days, postoperative pain (all greater for TVT; p<0.05). Although postoperative complications, recurrences and reoperations were similar among techniques, patients’ satisfaction rates at one month and one year were significant different when analysed according to the severity of SUI: SUI 1 patients appreciated more the TOT operation and SUI 2 patients more the TVT (p<0.001). Conclusions: The choice of TOT vs. TVT is not completely similar. According to satisfaction rates, TOT could be more indicated in SUI 1 and TVT in SUI 2. Although recurrences or bladder obstructions rates are not different among techniques, they can influence patients’ satisfaction and could be avoided with accurate and proper indications according to the SUI severity.

Mestrado em Biomedicina Molecular Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the presence of two histopathological hallmarks: the extracellular amyloid plaques (APs) composed of beta-amyloid protein (Abeta) and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), containing hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Therefore, Abeta and tau are important molecules associated with AD and evidence suggests that Abeta may initiate the hyperphosphorylation of tau, which by disrupting neuronal network leads to the process of neurodegeneration. In the present study, using rat primary cortical and hippocampal neuronal cultures, it was shown that exposure to aggregated Abeta1-42 for prolonged periods decreased tau phosphorylation at Ser202 and Thr205 residue, but in contrast increased at Ser262 residue. Tau hyperphosphorylation in AD may be related to alterations in signal transduction pathways involving tau phosphorylation, such as an imbalance in the regulation of protein kinases (PKs) and protein phosphatases (PPs). Thus it is also important to determine which specific PKs and PPs are involved in this process. We observed the involvement of PP1 in the dephosphorylation of tau at Ser202 and Thr205, and the involvement of PP1 and PP2A at the Ser262 residue. An important aspect of tau metabolism are its binding proteins, and to date many such proteins have already been described both in vitro and in vivo. The interactome of tau is shaped by its phosphorylation and so is crucial to map the crosstalk between normal and pathologically hyperphosphorylated tau. By co-immunoprecipitation we intend to identify proteins that interact with tau and more specifically with phosphorylated tau (p-Tau). Furthermore the effect of Abeta on this interactome should be forthcoming, which is relevant for AD tau pathology. A doença de Alzheimer (DA) é uma doença neurodegenerativa caracterizada pela presença de duas características histopatológicas: as placas senis na matriz extracelular compostas por Beta-amilóide (Abeta) e as tranças neurofibrilhares intracelulares contendo proteína tau hiperfosforilada. Assim, o Abeta e a proteína tau são importantes moléculas associadas à DA e evidências sugerem que o Abeta possa mediar a hiperfosforilação da tau levando á disrupção da rede neuronal e consequentemente ao processo de neurodegeneração. No presente estudo, em culturas primárias neuronais de córtex e hipocampo de rato, verificou-se que a exposição a Abeta1-42 agregado por longos períodos diminui a fosforilação da tau nos resíduos Ser202 e Thr205 e, em contraste, aumenta a fosforilação no resíduo Ser262. Pensa-se que a hiperfosforilação da tau na DA pode estar relacionada com alterações nas vias de sinalização celular envolvidas no processo de fosforilação da tau, tais como alterações na regulação das cinases e das fosfatases. Deste modo, é também de extrema importância determinar as cinases e fosfatases envolvidas neste processo. Por tratamento de neurónios corticais com diferentes concentrações de ácido ocadéico (AO), um inibidor das fosfatases, verificamos o envolvimento da PP1 na desfosforilação da tau nos resíduos Ser202 e Thr205, bem como o envolvimento da PP1 e PP2A na desfosforilação do resíduo Ser262. Um outro aspecto importante do metabolismo da tau são as proteínas de ligação, e actualmente já foram descritas várias proteínas que interagem com a tau in vitro e in vivo. O interactoma da tau é regulado pela sua fosforilação e portanto é crucial estabelecer uma relação entre a tau normal e a tau patológica hiperfosforilada no que diz respeito às proteínas de ligação. Por co-imunoprecipitação de neurónios corticais pretendemos identificar proteínas de ligação à tau e especificamente à tau fosforilada, e ainda avaliar o efeito do Abeta neste interactoma. O interactoma da tau dependente da fosforilação e do Abeta é de particular relevância para a compreensão da DA.

Les molecules de classe i du cmh presentent des peptides d'origine endogene a la surface de la cellule, dans le but d'assurer une surveillance par les cellules t#c#d#8#+. L'assemblage des molecules de classe i est une etape incontournable pour une migration du complexe de classe i vers la surface cellulaire. Ce mecanisme est interrompu si les peptides generes dans le cytoplasme sont incapables de traverser la membrane du reticulum endoplasmique (re), pour s'associer aux chaines de classe i naissantes. Par marche chromosomique et cartographie de deletions chez des mutants d'assemblage, nous avons clone et caracterise de nouveaux genes a l'interieur de la region de classe ii du cmh. Ces genes codent pour les sous-unites d'un transporteur putatif de peptides (tap1/tap2) et deux sous-unites (lmp2/lmp7) d'un complexe proteolytique, le proteasome, qui degrade les proteines cytoplasmiques. L'heterodimere tap1-tap2, qui est implique dans la translocation des peptides du cytosol vers la lumiere du re, est localise dans la membrane du re et controle ainsi le passage des peptides. En transfectant tap1 et tap2 dans la lignee cellulaire mutante 174, qui est deletee des quatre nouveaux genes, nous avons montre que seuls les genes tap1 et tap2 sont necessaires a restaurer une expression normale des molecules de classe i a la surface cellulaire. Nos resultats, qui vont a l'encontre des modeles recents ou lmp2 et lmp7 etaient directement impliques dans l'appretement de l'antigene, montrent que ces composants lmp2 et lmp7 ne sont pas requis dans cette voie de presentation, ni pour la production de peptides, ni pour un assemblage stable des molecules de classe i

Abstract:

As developments in magnetic recording increase, the demands for high density recording media continue to rise. One particular medium developed towards meeting these needs is the commercially successftil metal evaporated (ME) tape. To provide a deeper understanding of the magnetic processes occurring in recording media, theoretical studies are carried out to complement experimental observations. Therefore, this thesis is concerned with developing a micromagnetic model to simulate the magnetic behaviour of ME tape. ME tape consists of bundles of granular columns which are tilted towards the film normal. The morphology of the film influences the magnetic behaviour and a 3D model is developed in this thesis to represent the columnar structure and the granular nature of ME tape. A Monte Carlo algorithm, consisting of a 'move and grow' procedure, is developed to generate an irregular system of spherical grains whose radii were generated from a log-normal distribution. This structure provides the foundation for modelling columns of ME tape. Initially an isolated column of ME tape was investigated. Grains were considered to be single domain and the dynamic process of the magnetic moments was explored by the Landau-Lifschitz equation. The model demonstrated that as the strength of the exchange coupling parameter increased, then moments which were strongly coupled resisted large negative fields and square hysteresis loops with a high coercivity were produced. Reversal of the moments was observed to be initiated at the ends of a column and then propagated throughout the column. This was attributed to large demagnetising fields and was particularly evident in the model with aligned easy axes. If the easy axes were randomiy orientated then more disorder was present in the model and moments rotated incoherently. This produced hysteresis loops that were less square than those of the aligned model. The results also showed how the microstructure influenced the reversal processes. Simulations on assemblies of interacting columns of ME tape highlighted that, when exchange coupling was weak, moments reversed incoherently throughout the structure. However, increasing the strength of the exchange coupling caused a high degree of cooperative reversal to occur in individual columns. As moments reverse their direction they initially relax towards the long axis of a column due to column demagnetising effects. The model demonstrates that as moments reverse there is a changing balance between magnetostatic (demagnetising) and exchange interactions within and between columns. The model was considered to be a good representation of ME tape, and the results obtained not only complement previous studies but provide a deeper understanding of the reversal processes occurring both within and between columns of ME tape.

The model of Turing machines has been studied since its birth in 1936. Researchers have continuously proposed variants of such a model. Upon imposing different constraints, the power of each model varies or even remains the same, accordingly. Some well-known result (for example, the equivalence of finite state automata and one-tape linear-time deterministic Turing machines) has proven that the abilities of overwriting the tape content and scanning the tape content more than once cannot gain any advantage under certain restrictions. In this thesis, we study the behaviors and the fundamental properties of variants of one-tape Turing machines, such as deterministic, reversible, nondeterministic, probabilistic, and quantum Turing machines. This gives us a better understanding about the strength and the weakness of each machine type. For example, under the one-tape linear-time restriction, reversible, nondeterministic, co-nondeterministic, and bounded-error probabilistic computations recognize exactly regular languages whereas probabilistic and quantum Turing machines can recognize even non-regular languages.

Abstract:

In this work, the iterated tabu search (ITS) algorithm for the traveling salesman problem (TSP) is discussed. The TSP is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem. Thus, solving the TSP means searching for the shortest closed tour in which every city is visited exactly once. Various heuristic algorithms can be used for solving the TSP, among them, tour construction heuristics, simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, etc. One of the promising heuristic techniques is the iterated tabu search approach. ITS consists of two main parts: standard tabu search (TS) and mutation of solutions. The goal of TS is finding a locally optimal solution in the neighbourhood of the current solution, while the mutation operators are responsible for escaping from the current local optimum and moving towards new regions in the solution space. Several mutation procedures have been analyzed in this work, in particular, exchange mutation, insert mutation, inversion mutation, and others. In order to investigated the performance of the mutation operators, computational experiments with the test instances from the TSP instances library TSPLIB were carried out. The results obtained from these experiments show that the mutation operators play the important role and influence the solution quality significantly.

Abstract:

Automated Tape Laying (ATL) trials using low cost wind energy suitable material and mould tools have been conducted. New materials proved problematic during ATL lay-up and observations of the ATL process show that the prepreg tack and stiffness properties significantly affect lay-up performance. Prepreg tack has not been widely researched within the composites industry due to the absence of a standardised method for characterisation. A new tack and stiffness test has therefore been developed which is representative of the ATL process. The new test was used to investigate the response to process and material variables. Two failure modes were observed and compared to those found in Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA). Failure modes are associated with the viscoelastic stiffness of the resin. High stiffness appears to result in interfacial failure turning to cohesive failure when stiffness is reduced. A peak in tack is observed to correspond with the transition in failure mode leading to the conclusion that prepreg tack is the result of a chain system rather than a single property. The chain system consists of an interface and bulk components each having individual time and physical variable dependant properties. Tack and stiffness is shown to conform to the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) time-temperature superposition principle for both cohesive and interfacial failure modes. Cohesive viscoelastic and surface energy interface failure mechanisms may be theoretically linked via the Lennard-Jones energy well with molecular jumps triggered by thermal vibrations. This analogy allows both failure phenomenon to simultaneously follow the time temperature superposition principle and is typically demonstrated in LJ dynamic mechanical modelling. The theoretical analogy is used in the explanation of experimental results where tack is essentially thought of as a low energy non-covalent molecular bond or reaction. The experimental technique developed here could allow for the standardisation of tack and stiffness specification for manufacturers. The application of results to ATL production is explored and demonstrated using ATL equipment. The results show that optimum lay-up conditions may be explored offline using the new tack and stiffness test. Results also show promising signs that the WLF relationship could be exploited to greatly Increase lay-up speed and consistency, increasing the attractiveness of the process to wind turbine blade manufacturers. A theoretical results curve is also presented which may allow manufacturers to determine the effect of changes in surface conditions and resin properties on tack.

Abstract:

This thesis examines exact and heuristic approaches to solve the Ship Routing and Scheduling Problem (SRSP). The method was developed to address the problem of loading cargos for many customers using heterogeneous vessels. Constraints relate to delivery time windows imposed by customers, the time horizon by which all deliveries must be made and vessel capacities. The objective is to minimise the overall operation cost, where all customers are satisfied. Two types of routing and scheduling are considered, one called single-cargo problem, where only one cargo can be loaded into a ship, and the second type called multi-cargo problem, where multiple products can be carried on a ship to be delivered to different customers. The exact approach comprises two stages. In the first stage, a number of candidate feasible schedules is generated for each ship in the fleet. The second stage is to model the problem as a set partitioning problem (SPP) where the columns are the candidate feasible schedules obtained in the first stage. The heuristic approach uses Tabu Search (TS). Most of the TS operations, such as insert and swap moves, tenure, tabu list, intensification, and diversification are used. The results of a computational investigation are presented. Solution quality and execution time are explored with respect to problem size and parameters controlling the tabu search such as tenure and neighbourhood size. The results showed that the average of the solution gap between TS solution and SPP solution is up to 28% (for small problems) and up to 18% for large problems. However, obtaining an optimal solution requires a large amount of computer time to produce the solution compared to obtaining approximate solutions using the TS approach. The use of Tabu Search for SRSP is novel and the results indicate that it is viable approach for large problems.
