Abstract:
Fuel pipes popularly used in automotive industry applications carry fuel from the fuel tank to the engine and work under variable vibrations having different magnitude and frequency parameters due to the engine’s rotation frequency and road profile’s spontaneous change. Considering that the transfer of the fuel to the engine in the desired way has a crucial importance on the driving performance, any problem that may exist because of the vibrations cannot be acceptable in the pipe assembly. Because of this reason, all manufactured fuel pipes have to be well tested in terms of some industrial standards. The fluid excitement test is a very useful and commonly accepted method in the industry. However, this method produces enormous amount of noise that does not allow to obtain healthy pressure values from the sensors. In this study, Kalman filtering method has been used to interpret the data that have been obtained from the sensors. The usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed Kalman filtering method have been shown and discussed based on the test results.

Abstract:
Water pump control, prevalent in various industrial plants, such as wastewater treatment and steam generator facilities, plays a significant role in maintaining economic efficiency and stable plant operation. Due to its slow dynamics, strong nonlinearity, and various disturbances, it is also widely studied as a typical benchmark problem in process control. The current control strategies can be categorized into two aspects: one branch resorts to model-based design and the other to data-driven design. To merge the merits and overcome the deficiencies of each paradigm, this paper proposes a hybrid data-driven and model-assisted control strategy, namely modified active disturbance rejection control (MADRC). The model information regarding water dynamics is incorporated into an extended state observer (ESO), which is used to estimate and mitigate the limitations of slow dynamics, strong nonlinearity, and various disturbances by analyzing the real-time data. The tuning formula is given in terms of the desired closed-loop performance. It is shown that MADRC is able to produce a satisfactory control performance while maintaining a low sensitivity to the measurement noise under general parametric setting conditions. The simulation results verify the clear superiority of MADRC over the proportional-integral (PI) controller and the conventional ADRC, and the results also evidence its noise reduction effects. The experimental results agree well with the simulation results based on a water tank setup. The proposed MADRC approach is able to improve the control performance while reducing the actuator fluctuation. The results presented in this paper offer a promising methodology for the water control loops widely used in the water industry.

In order to reduce the influence of fuel sloshing on the interior noise of a passenger car, the fuel tank sloshing noise was first evaluated with a subjective evaluation method to determine the driving cycle of the car and the fuel filling percentage of the fuel tank in which the fuel tank sloshing noise is serious, and then two anti-wave boards with different structural characteristics were designed to reduce the fuel sloshing. On this basis, fuel sloshing in the fuel tank equipped with the newly designed and original anti-wave boards was simulated numerically; then, the anti-wave board with the best effect of inhibiting fuel from sloshing was selected based on the numerical results; finally, the anti-sloshing effect of the selected board was evaluated through the car road test. The test results show that the vibration acceleration magnitude at each monitoring point of the tank with the selected anti-wave board is significantly reduced compared with the original fuel tank, which indicates that the selected anti-wave board inhibits fuel from sloshing greatly.

During the last decade the shape of the UK non-nuclear electricity generation industry has changed fundamentally from a stable monopoly providing power primarily from large coal-fired units to a rapidly developing competitive industry with a wide range of plant types. The removal of the restrictions on burning natural gas in power stations and the introduction of flue gas desulphurization on some of the traditional plants has highlighted the reduced cost and lower emissions of gas-powered generation, leading to a major increase in the use of this fuel in more efficient combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant. Outside the United Kingdom, the economics and politics of fuel supply and electricity production may be different, and both traditional plant and new CCGT projects are being constructed in overseas markets by UK utilities, often in partnership arrangements with other companies. In parallel with these developments there is significant new effort expended on the development of combined heat and power (CHP) plant and renewable energy sources, especially wind power. Although relatively small in MW terms, the latter plant type presents significant and particular noise control requirements. On the horizon, new coal plant using coal gasification or fluidized bed technologies may be anticipated. At the same time as these major changes in plant selection are occurring there are simultaneous developments in the methods of environmental noise assessment. In this article the use of noise control within the electricity generation industry is reviewed and the influence of the changing trends in plant and environmental noise assessment are discussed.

Three-tank liquid level system is a more typical non-linear and delay object with strong representation and background of industry. The part or whole of many objects can be abstracted into a mathematical model of three-tank liquid level system. Research on modeling and control of the system has important theoretical significance and practical value. This article describes how to use Simulink function to establish the mechanism of three-tank liquid level system model. And at the time, an improved PID control algorithm is proposed. The results show that it has more superior performance for three-tank liquid level system simulation control compared with the traditional PID control algorithm.

Abstract:
This work studies loop control composition in continuous chemical reactors with simple structures, due to its large acceptance in chemical industry. A linear cascade composition control (master/slave) is proposed, designed with basic control structures based on Laplace tools. Two configurations are designed, which were evaluated in a dynamic model of continuous stirred tank. From a stability analysis it is noted that, for such configurations, system assent time is 7 to 8 times reduced if compared to the assent time without loop control. Besides, the system shows a good performance when coming to the asked reference. Implementation of such control configurations can solve the problem of loop control composition.

Abstract:
ln-planl control measures in the different manufacturing units in an Oil and Soap Company were carried out. The hot spent lye at 105°C can be saponified again with a predetermined free fatty acid produced in the plant in order to recover soap and to avoid excessive foams. Also, recovery of residual soap resulting from steam blowing during shutdown periods was achieved by using a Jacketed storage tank heated with steam. The techno-economic study for this proposal revealed that the total saving per year is 237,000 L.E. and the percentage return on investment is almost 86%, while the payout period is 0.2 month. Also, the implementation of any possible housekeeping was taken into consideration.

Abstract:
Workplaces primarily rely on hearing protection devices (HPDs) for prevention of occupational noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). This study was initiated to investigate the potential barriers to the implementation of engineered noise control (ENC) which is considered to be the best prevention measure. The study investigated knowledge and perception about NIHL and ENC among decision-makers and workers in the food products manufacturing industry in British Columbia. We contacted company Health and Safety Departments. They were sent packages of questionnaires and return envelopes for distribution among specified subjects. Follow-up phone calls were made to increase participation. Analysis included descriptive statistics, nonparametric methods and simple and multiple logistic regressions. Twenty-two companies and 92 individuals participated (response rate 32.5%). Nearly two-third of the respondents were non-management. A similar proportion was involved in health and safety activities. The majority of the respondents perceived NIHL to be a big disadvantage and said that they would be bothered by it. Respondents were knowledgeable about the effects of noise exposure on health but had poor knowledge about harmful levels of noise, ENC and the limitations of HPDs. They considered HPDs, hearing tests and education to be more effective in preventing NIHL than ENC. Management showed poorer knowledge and lower perception than non-management. Those involved in health and safety performed slightly better than those who were not involved in such activities. Interventions should be undertaken to educate management about ENC options and limitations of HPDs. Regulatory agency should create special branches to help workplaces in choosing suitable ENC.

Abstract:
With the ongoing trend in moving the upper levels of the automation hierarchy to the cloud, there has been investigation into supplying industrial automation as a cloud based service. There are many practical considerations which pose limitations on the feasibility of the idea. This research investigates some of the requirements which would be needed to implement a platform which would facilitate competition between different controllers which would compete to control a process in real-time. This work considers only the issues relating to implementation of the philosophy from a control theoretic perspective, issues relating to hardware/communications infrastructure and cyber security are beyond the scope of this work. A platform is formulated and all the relevant control requirements of the system are discussed. It is found that in order for such a platform to determine the behaviour of a controller, it would need to simulate the controller on a model of the process over an extended period of time. This would require a measure of the disturbance to be available, or at least an estimate thereof. This therefore increases the complexity of the platform. The practicality of implementing such a platform is discussed in terms of system identification and model/controller maintenance. A model of the surge tank from SibanyeStillwater’s Platinum bulk tailings treatment (BTT) plant, the aim of which is to keep the density of the tank outflow constant while maintaining a steady tank level, was derived, linearised and an input-output controllability analysis performed on the model. Six controllers were developed for the process, including four conventional feedback controllers (decentralised PI, inverse, modified inverse and H¥) and two Model Predictive Controllers (MPC) (one linear and another nonlinear). It was shown that both the inverse based and H¥ controllers fail to control the tank level to set-point in the event of an unmeasured disturbance. The competing concept was successfully illustrated on this process with the linear MPC controller being the most often selected controller, and the overall performance of the plant substantially improved by having access to more advanced control techniques, which is facilitated by the proposed platform. A first appendix presents an investigation into a previously proposed switching philosophy [15] in terms of its ability to determine the best controller, as well as the stability of the switching scheme. It is found that this philosophy cannot provide an accurate measure of controller performance owing to the use of one step ahead predictions to analyse controller behaviour. Owing to this, the philosophy can select an unstable controller when there is a stable, well tuned controller competing to control the process. A second appendix shows that there are cases where overall system performance can be improved through the use of the proposed platform. In the presence of constraints on the rate of change of the inputs, a more aggressive controller is shown to be selected so long as the disturbance or reference changes do not cause the controller to violate these input constraints. This means that switching back to a less aggressive controller is necessary in the event that the controller attempts to violate these constraints. This is demonstrated on a simple first order plant as well as the surge tank process. Overall it is concluded that, while there are practical issues surrounding plant and system identification and model/controller maintenance, it would be possible to implement such a platform which would allow a given plant access to advanced process control solutions without the need for procuring the services of a large vendor.

Os conceitos de arquitetura dão novas dimensões aos projetos de enclausuramento de fontes ruidosas por cabines acústicas no chão de fábrica, no que diz respeito às relações entre o ruído industrial e suas implicações no homem quanto à perda da audição, perda de produtividade e riscos de acidentes bem como as metodologias para controle do ruído e a inter-relação entre o ruído industrial e sua vizinhança. O objetivo foi o de desenvolver um método de projetar e construir cabines acústicas para o controle do ruído industrial. As cabines acústicas existentes são desenvolvidas visando apenas o controle do ruído. Entretanto, na arquitetura, outras variáveis como o conforto visual, a ergonomia, a segurança, a visibilidade e o desempenho também devem ser consideradas. Fez-se necessário desenvolver um método prático de avaliação do Ruído Industrial, para dar subsídios às propostas de soluções arquitetônicas que o controlem. O método prático consiste efetuar medidas de ruído em dB(A) nos pontos modais de uma malha ajustada para as dimensões do edifício industrial. O resultado das medições possibilita a visualização da distribuição do ruído através de isossônicas, permitindo que as soluções sejam avaliadas a qualquer momento, tanto do ponto de vista da metodologia, como dos resultados projetados e efetivamente alcançados. A proposta é demonstrar, para alguns casos reais, como o método de controle facilita a análise e propicia correções 6 quando necessário. Conhecemos os métodos tradicionais contidos na NR-15 e suas implicações nas áreas industriais. A redução do ruído na fonte é a melhor opção para o tratamento acústico na indústria. A diminuição do ruído reverberante, pelo aumento das superfícies absorventes internas ao edifício industrial, reduz também o nível sonoro a que os operários estão submetidos, mas torna os operadores das máquinas excessivamente expostos, pois seus postos de trabalho ficam interpostos entre as fontes do ruído e o tratamento acústico, recebendo, portanto, toda a energia emitida. A redução do ruído na fonte tem resultados satisfatórios, pois diminui em muito os custos do tratamento acústico e livra o operário do recebimento direto da dose de ruído. Para este trabalho, são selecionados exemplos de locais que apresentam condições excessivas de ruído e necessitam de tratamento, os quais propiciam a implantação da metodologia desenvolvida.
The architectural concepts give new dimensions to noisy source enclosure projects for performance should also be considered. The relationship between industrial noise, their implications on man as in hearing loss, loss of productivity, rising accident, methodologies of control and the interrelationship between the industrial noise and its neighborhood is considered. The goal was to develop a design method for building acoustic cabins for industrial noise control. The existing acoustic hoods are developed targeting only the noise control. However, in architecture, other variables such as visual comfort, ergonomics, safety, visibility beyond the performance should be considered. Developing a practical method for evaluating the industrial noise is necessary to give subsidies to propose architectural solutions that control the industrial noise. The practical method consists of performing measurements in dB (A) in the modal points of a mesh adjusted to the dimensions of the building industry. The results of measurements allow the visualization of the noise distribution through isossonics that can evaluate at any time the solutions, both from the standpoint of methodology as projected results and effectively achieved. The proposal demonstrates some real cases in which the control method facilitates the analysis and provides corrections when necessary. We know the traditional methods contained in NR 15 and its implications in the industrial areas. The noise reduction at source is the best option for the acoustic treatment in the industry. The reverberant noise reduction, by increasing absorbent surfaces inside the industrial building, also reduces the sound level that the operators are submitted, but makes machine operators excessively exposed because their jobs are interposed between the noise sources and acoustic treatment, receiving all the emitted energy. The source noise reduction has satisfactory results because it reduces considerably the acoustic treatment costs and free the worker from receiving direct noise dose. For this work, examples of sites that have excessive noise conditions, and need treatment, are selected, which provide the implementation of the developed methodology.

Misturas de poliacetal (POM), polímero de engenharia com boas propriedades mecânicas, com poliuretano termoplástico (TPU), um polímero composto por uma fase rígida e outra flexível visam buscar alternativa de materiais a serem utilizadas em bandas externas de roldanas, visando a diminuição da emissão de ruído das roldanas quando utilizadas em sistema de movimentação de portas de armários, em contato com um trilho metálico. Neste trabalho foram avaliadas as propriedades mecânicas, físicas, térmicas e morfológica de misturas de POM/TPU nas proporções 100/0, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60 e 0/100 (m/m). As misturas foram preparadas em extrusora dupla rosca corrotante e após os corpos de prova foram injetados em injetora convencional. O aumento dos teores de TPU nas misturas promoveu o aumento da resistência ao impacto, à abrasão e diminuição na dureza do material. Houveram aumentos da temperatura de deflexão térmica das misturas com o aumento do teor de POM. Através da microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) pode ser analisada uma mistura homogênea com partículas dispersas de TPU em formato de gotículas. A avaliação de emissão de ruído mostrou que com a diminuição do módulo de elasticidade, com o aumento da quantidade TPU na mistura, ocorre a redução da emissão de ruído do mesmo, esta redução fica evidente em frequências acima de 1kHz, ocorrendo uma redução da emissão de ruído de 2-5dB.

Polyoxymethylene (POM), an engineering polymer with good mechanical properties, blended with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a polymer composed by a flexible and a rigid phase, are an alternative of materials to be used in external bands of pulleys, aiming to reduce the noise emission of pulleys when used in system drive cabinets doors, occurring pulleys contact with a metallic rail. In this work, the mechanical, physical, thermal and morphological properties of POM/TPU blends were evaluated in the proportions of 100/0, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60 and 0/100 (w/w). The blends were prepared in a twin screw extruder and after the samples were injected in a conventional injector. The increase in the levels of TPU on the blends promoted a rise in the impact resistance, abrasion and a decrease in the material hardness. There was an increase in the deflection heat temperature of the blends with enhanced content of POM. Through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was observed a blend with the presence of dispersed TPU particles. The noise emission showed that with the decrease in the modulus of elasticity of the polymer occurs a reduction of noise emission. This reduction is evident in frequencies above 1 kHz, causing 2-5dB reduction of noise emission.

Abstract:
High precision motion is critical in the semiconductor industry and as feature size continues to decrease, the need for higher precision increases. This paper presents the control system design and integration of a novel multi-degree of freedom precision stage for nano-manufacturing. It is composed of a 6 DOF wafer holder and a 3 DOF module holder. The modules can be chosen for a desired task, such as a nano-imprint lithography module. Capacitance gauges, interferometers, and photo detectors provide position feedback of the stage. Piezo-electric actuators and linear motors, that produce two orthogonal forces each, produce the desired output. Modeling of the coordinate transformation among the spaces of sensors, stage position, and actuators along with dynamic modeling of the stage is presented. Controller design, hardware, and software is described and results comparing simulation and implementation show a closed-loop positioning of less than 1 nm error in x and y and 0.01 arc seconds in θz with a sensor noise level of less than 0.2 nm.

Level control is an increasingly important issue for a variety of industries involved in the production, processing, or packaging of liquids or bulk solids, such as the citrus industry. The growing importance of level control is driven by several factors. First, many companies simply have not had adequate methods of level control, relying on rough measurements of inflow and outflow, or purely manual methods. These companies have been ‘flying blind’ and unable to accurately ascertain their inventory conditions, resulting in a host of operational problems. As these companies invest in automated systems, level is one of many inputs that need to be properly monitored. Second, more companies are seeking to manage and reduce their inventory levels in order to reduce both the capital and tax costs of inventory holding. Paper published with permission.

Abstract:
The paper presents results of research on the transmission of fluid borne noise in reservoir filled with fluid. This type of transmission of vibrational energy in the fluid occurs in fluid power units, in which hydraulic pumps are immersed in the liquid in the tank i.e. in the vertical mounting of the electric motor on the reservoir. There are vibrating elements submerged in the fluid like pumps, pipe elements, filters, etc. Due to the vibration of these elements fluid borne noise will be generated which will be transmitted to the tank structure. The transmission of fluid borne noise is dependent on natural frequencies of the tank structure. Based on model investigations, the mechanism and factors influencing the intensity of transmission of fluid borne noise in a reservoir were presented. The results of simulations with FEM were compared with the results of experimental investigations.
