Full text
Abstract:
DNA mismatch repair is an essential system for maintaining genetic stability in bacteria and higher eukaryotes. Based on the conserved regions of the bacterial MutS gene and its homologues in yeast and human, a wheat cDNA homologue of MSH6, designated TaMSH7, was isolated by RT–PCR. The deduced amino acid sequence of TaMSH7 shows conserved domains characteristic of other MSH6 genes, with highest similarity to maize MSH7 and Arabidopsis MSH7. TaMSH7 is expressed in meristem tissue associated with a high level of mitotic and meiotic activity, with maximum expression in the reproductive organs of young flower spikes. TaMSH7 is located on the short arms of chromosomes 3A, 3B, and 3D and has been mapped within barley chromosome 3HS. The copy on 3DS is located within the region deleted in the wheat mutant ph2a, which shows altered recombination frequency in the interspecific hybrids. The relationship between the ph2a mutant and TaMSH7 gene function is discussed.Key words: wheat, DNA mismatch repair gene, expression, chromosomal location, Ph2.

Abstract:
Hybrid varieties can provide the boost needed to increase stagnant wheat yields through heterosis. The lack of an efficient hybridization system, which can lower the cost of goods of hybrid seed production, has been a major impediment to commercialization of hybrid wheat varieties. In this review, we discuss the progress made in characterization of nuclear genetic male sterility (NGMS) in wheat and its advantages over two widely referenced hybridization systems, i.e., chemical hybridizing agents (CHAs) and cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS). We have characterized four wheat genes, i.e., Ms1, Ms5, TaMs26 and TaMs45, that sporophytically contribute to male fertility and yield recessive male sterility when mutated. While Ms1 and Ms5 are Triticeae specific genes, analysis of TaMs26 and TaMs45 demonstrated conservation of function across plant species. The main features of each of these genes is discussed with respect to the functional contribution of three sub-genomes and requirements for complementation of their respective mutants. Three seed production systems based on three genes, MS1, TaMS26 and TaMS45, were developed and a proof of concept was demonstrated for each system. The Tams26 and ms1 mutants were maintained through a TDNA cassette in a Seed Production Technology-like system, whereas Tams45 male sterility was maintained through creation of a telosome addition line. These genes represent different options for hybridization systems utilizing NGMS in wheat, which can potentially be utilized for commercial-scale hybrid seed production.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Dysmenorrhea is pain related with menstruation in Unani medicine, and ancient texts are abundant with traditional knowledge for managing menstrual pain.It is the most frequent gynecologic condition among female teenagers, affecting more than half of women between the ages of 18 and 25 years. It is characterized by painful cramps in the lower abdomen that are accompanied by one or more symptoms such as perspiration, lower backache, exhaustion, diarrhea, headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and syncope in severe instances. Because conventional medicines often do not completely relieve pain and have their own side effects on the human body, it is necessary to understand the traditionally documented therapeutic options that have no adverse effects on the human body. The many causes and treatments for dysmenorrhea have been discussed in the unani literature under the category of waje rehm / dard rehm / usre tams. According to Unani manuscripts, the main management strategy is to induce analgesia and address the underlying cause of usr-i-tamth, which includes aberrant temperament, monthly irregularities/uterine disorders, as well as psychological and environmental variables. Unani drugs having emmenagogue, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic are helpful in the treatment of usr-i-tamth.Herbs including Apium graveolens, Cuminum cyminum, Foeniculum vulgare, Matricaria chamomilla, and Nigella sativa have the aforementioned qualities, and their usefulness in usr-i-tamth has been scientifically verified. Validation and preservation of traditional knowledge are thus necessary for future study and important for usage in the modern period. The focus of the review study is on the treatment of dysmenorrhea in the unani medical system. It also goes over some of the herbal medicines and unani compound formulations that are used to treat dysmenorrhea.

Abstract:
Abstract. Early warning of weather-related hazards enables farmers, policy makers and aid agencies to mitigate their exposure to risk. We present a new operational framework, Tropical Applications of Meteorology using SATellite data and ground based measurements-AgricuLtural EaRly warning sysTem (TAMSAT-ALERT), which aims to provide early warning for meteorological risk to agriculture. TAMSAT-ALERT combines information on land-surface properties, seasonal forecasts and historical weather to quantitatively assess the likelihood of adverse weather-related outcomes, such as low yield. This article describes the modular TAMSAT-ALERT framework and demonstrates its application to risk assessment for low maize yield in northern Ghana (Tamale). The modular design of TAMSAT-ALERT enables it to accommodate any impact or land-surface model driven with meteorological data. The implementation described here uses the well-established General Large Area Model (GLAM) for annual crops to provide probabilistic assessments of the meteorological hazard for maize yield in northern Ghana (Tamale) throughout the growing season. The results show that climatic risk to yield is poorly constrained in the beginning of the season, but as the season progresses, the uncertainty is rapidly reduced. Based on the assessment for the period 2002–2011, we show that TAMSAT-ALERT can estimate the meteorological risk on maize yield 6 to 8 weeks in advance of harvest. The TAMSAT-ALERT methodology implicitly weights forecast and observational inputs according to their relevance to the metric being assessed. A secondary application of TAMSAT-ALERT is thus an evaluation of the usefulness of meteorological forecast products for impact assessment. Here, we show that in northern Ghana (Tamale), the tercile seasonal forecasts of seasonal cumulative rainfall and mean temperature, which are routinely issued to farmers, are of limited value because regional and seasonal temperature and rainfall are poorly correlated with yield. This finding speaks to the pressing need for meteorological forecast products that are tailored for individual user applications.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the role of the documentary form in building pronuclear narratives around the Indian nuclear project. It situates the nuclear films made by two state institutions, Films Division of India (Films Division) and Vigyan Prasar, as part of a network of expert statements, documentary assertions, and state violence that bring into being a pronuclear reality. Through the insights gained from my practice-based enquiry, which led to the production and circulation of a film titled Nuclear Hallucinations, I argue that the certainty of the pronouncements of such documentaries can be unsettled by approaching them as a tamasha. I rely on the multiple connotations of the word tamasha in the South Asian context and its ability to turn solemn assertions into a matter of entertainment or a joke. This vantage point of tamasha vis-à-vis the Indian nuclear project builds upon the strategies of antinuclear documentaries that resist the epistemological violence of pronuclear assertions. In this article, I explore the role of comic modes and irony in forming sites of tamasha to create trouble within the narratives that position nonviolent antinuclear protestors as “antinational” elements. The article also expands on how the point of view of tamasha can engender new solidarities, which can resist the violence of the Indian nuclear project by forming new configurations of possibilities.

Abstract:
A computer infrastructure which integrates the geographic information system (GIS), hydrodynamic model, visualization and network applications was developed and applied in Tamshui River, Taiwan. A digital terrain model (DTM) of the study area was first generated. We used it as a basis to construct the computation grids, conduct the flow simulations, and visualize the predicted flow scenarios in the virtual world. The three-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model system WQMAP was employed to simulate flows under the tidal forcing, upstream river inflows and seawater–freshwater interactions of Tamshui River. Model predictions were generally in good agreement with other simulations. Computed results were visualized in both the innovative virtual reality (VR) environment and Internet-based collaborative visualization environment (CVE). The VR environment enabled us to observe firsthand the complicated flow phenomena in the virtual world. Internet-based CVE supports distributed visualization and collaboration. The GIS-based system exhibits great potential in data visualization capabilities and the improvement of water management. We anticipate that these computer technologies will popularly be applied to hydroinformatics and other related domains in the foreseeable future.

Abstract:
AbstractTropical Applications of Meteorology Using Satellite Data and Ground-Based Observations (TAMSAT) rainfall monitoring products have been extended to provide spatially contiguous rainfall estimates across Africa. This has been achieved through a new, climatology-based calibration, which varies in both space and time. As a result, cumulative estimates of rainfall are now issued at the end of each 10-day period (dekad) at 4-km spatial resolution with pan-African coverage. The utility of the products for decision making is improved by the routine provision of validation reports, for which the 10-day (dekadal) TAMSAT rainfall estimates are compared with independent gauge observations. This paper describes the methodology by which the TAMSAT method has been applied to generate the pan-African rainfall monitoring products. It is demonstrated through comparison with gauge measurements that the method provides skillful estimates, although with a systematic dry bias. This study illustrates TAMSAT’s value as a complementary method of estimating rainfall through examples of successful operational application.

Abstract:
Usr-i-tamth in Unani (Greco-Arabic) medicine is pain associated with menstruation, and classical manuscripts are enriched with traditional knowledge for the management of usr-i-tamth (menstrual pain/dysmenorrhoea). Hence, a comprehensive search was undertaken to find classical manuscripts for the management of menstrual pain was. We searched the Cochrane database, PubMed/Google Scholar, and other websites for articles on complementary and alternative medicine treatment and management of menstrual pain. The principal management as per Unani manuscripts is to produce analgesia and to treat the cause of usr-i-tamth such as abnormal temperament, menstrual irregularities/uterine diseases, and psychological and environmental factors. Furthermore, Unani medicines with emmenagogue, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties are beneficial for amelioration of usr-i-tamth. Herbs such as Apium graveolens, Cuminum cyminium, Foeniculum vulgare, Matricaria chamomilla and Nigella sativa possess the aforementioned properties and are proven scientifically for their efficacy in usr-i-tamth. Thus, validation and conservation of the traditional knowledge is essential for prospective research and valuable for use in the contemporary era.

</p> <p>&nbsp;</p><p>This case study is part of the University&rsquo; Social Responsibility project &ldquo;World Heritage Potential Field School&rdquo;, an interdisciplinary university course program. This study developed an innovative &ldquo;community construction&rdquo; curriculum module using hands-on model of urban design workshop. The curriculum is designed based on the design thinking process&mdash;empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. This study examined how students developed design thinking through the learning process of fieldwork, problem definition, and project proposal with teamwork in real-life communities and neighborhoods. In this study, &ldquo;Religious Culture and Historic District Regeneration&rdquo; was selected as the theme of the workshop course, based on the real issues in context, and the religious culture experience of the intangible cultural heritage was used as the topic of the proposal. Data were collected from classroom sessions, group discussions, neighborhood and community visits, student interviews, and learning reflective journals to analyze the conceptualization and design process that stimulate the possibility of rejuvenating the historic Tamsui district. The research findings revealed that, through participatory design, students&rsquo; learning to accomplish the proposed tasks was a sense making process through their communication with the &ldquo;people&rdquo; and &ldquo;surroundings&rdquo; of the place as well as their own experiential understanding. The study also found that bringing the curriculum to the real-life world for task-based learning initiated novel learning experiences while students were exposed to traditional culture. The architectural knowledge built by research through design and the visibility function that promotes design thinking are further discussed in this research. In addition, the curriculum module on innovative participatory design &ldquo;community construction&rdquo; developed in this study will help optimize the practice of design thinking learning model in university curriculum reform. </p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Abstract:
Abstract Tropical Applications of Meteorology Using Satellite and Ground-Based Observations (TAMSAT) rainfall estimates are used extensively across Africa for operational rainfall monitoring and food security applications; thus, regional evaluations of TAMSAT are essential to ensure its reliability. This study assesses the performance of TAMSAT rainfall estimates, along with the African Rainfall Climatology (ARC), version 2; the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 product; and the Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH), against a dense rain gauge network over a mountainous region of Ethiopia. Overall, TAMSAT exhibits good skill in detecting rainy events but underestimates rainfall amount, while ARC underestimates both rainfall amount and rainy event frequency. Meanwhile, TRMM consistently performs best in detecting rainy events and capturing the mean rainfall and seasonal variability, while CMORPH tends to overdetect rainy events. Moreover, the mean difference in daily rainfall between the products and rain gauges shows increasing underestimation with increasing elevation. However, the distribution in satellite–gauge differences demonstrates that although 75% of retrievals underestimate rainfall, up to 25% overestimate rainfall over all elevations. Case studies using high-resolution simulations suggest underestimation in the satellite algorithms is likely due to shallow convection with warm cloud-top temperatures in addition to beam-filling effects in microwave-based retrievals from localized convective cells. The overestimation by IR-based algorithms is attributed to nonraining cirrus with cold cloud-top temperatures. These results stress the importance of understanding regional precipitation systems causing uncertainties in satellite rainfall estimates with a view toward using this knowledge to improve rainfall algorithms.

Abstract:
South Buir Sag is located in Tamsag Basin of Mongolia, which is a Mesozoic faulted basin. South Buir Sag shows the distinct characterization of faulted structure: many uplifts and many depressions, depressions alternated with many uplifts. This special structure framework results in the characteristic of multi-provenances, multi-depocencers. South Buir Sag experienced the whole process of Cretaceous basin development. South Buir Sag formed fan deltas-lacustrine system in the period of Tsagaantsav Formation, Lower Zuunbayan Formation which occurred in rifting stage. It developed deltas-lacustrine system during the period of Upper Zuunbayan Formation,Sainshand Formation,Bayanshire Formation which is in rifting-downwarping stage. From the period of Bayanshire Formation to present, South Buir Sag underwent downwarped and developed fluvial system. The sandstone of fan deltas front can provide favorable reservoir for hydrocarbon accumulation. Some regions of structure and deposition matching well can form lithology-structure petroleum reservoir.
