Summary, Jennifer J. "TWIN TALK." OpenSIUC, 2012. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/506.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine instances of naturally occurring conversations between twin siblings. This study uses both conversation analysis and semi-structured interviews to investigate communication patterns and practices in everyday twin-to-twin talk. The following research questions guided this study: (1) What pragmatic features of analytic interest are present in twin-to-twin talk? (2) What pragmatic features of analytic interest are present when twins interact with other members of the family system? There were a total of six sets of twin siblings between the ages of 10 and 15 who engaged in participant self-taping and semi-structured interviews. Although it did not have an observable effect on the findings, there were five sets of dizygotic (fraternal) twins and one set of monozygotic (identical) twins. Eight parents were interviewed and four parents participated in the conversations with the twin siblings. Findings suggest that certain communication practices and Phenomena are present in twin siblings' conversations, though not necessarily uniquely. Simultaneous speech is a conversational practice evident in every set of twin siblings' transcripts, serving as a completion to the other's utterance. In the presence of parents, it functions as a competitive move, other-initiated repair, and entertainment. As the twins conversed alone, extension/completion of the other twin's utterance served as a way to verify reported speech. It functions as support, verification, competition, and a way to gain attention when talking in front of a parent. The joint conversational performance act of code-switching was a practice used for entertainment by the twins when conversing alone. It served as a way to prove a point and to entertain as they interacted with a parent. Conversational phenomena included testing, and speaking for one's twin. Twins engaged in testing while conversing alone to show support for their twin. As they engaged in talk with a parent present, it served as competition/support, role confirmation/enactment, and identification/deidentification between the twin siblings. Speaking for one's twin could only occur while the twins were conversing in front of a parent. It functioned as a competitive move, as support, and as a way to gain attention.

Newman, Ruth Malka Charlotte. "Making talk work : exploring the teaching of collaborative talk." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14981.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the outcome of a PhD CASE Studentship funded by the ESRC and British Telecom. It presents an exploration into the teaching of collaborative talk. The study was conducted in three phases: exploratory, development and implementation. During the exploratory phase, observations and interviews were conducted in authentic workplace settings to gain an understanding of workplace collaboration and collaborative talk. During the development phase, a teaching unit for the teaching of collaborative talk at GCSE was devised, informed by understandings gleaned during the preceding phase. During the implementation phase, the teaching unit was taught by two teachers in their secondary English classrooms. Both participating classes were arranged into groups of 4: 8 groups in School 1 and 7 in School 2. For the duration of the 3 week teaching unit, groups were recorded via camera and audio recorder, and the data later synchronised. Both teachers wore an audio recorder to capture interactions with groups and the whole class. To complement the core data set, students were interviewed for their views on their learning. Student booklets provided a means of collecting both group and individual reflections and evaluative comments. The data was analysed to explore the development of students’ collaborative talk. The role of the teacher in implementing the teaching unit and supporting students’ development was also examined. The findings provide an insight into the realities of implementing successful collaborative talk in the ‘real’ secondary classroom. It contributes to conceptualisations of collaborative talk and its development. It makes links between the role of emotional engagement and dialogic interactions in supporting that development. It proposes teaching strategies which challenge perceived notions of ‘good’ talk and encourages the development of meta-language to support self-evaluation and the development of collaborative talk.

Quinn, Schone H. J. "What do we talk about when we talk about disease?" Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10039568/.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a thesis about classification and disease, our expectations as lay-people and patients as to where the borders of illness lie, and the consequences of such expectations. In Chapter I the discussion is framed with a critical analysis of common terms and concepts employed in the social, historical and philosophical study of disease. Chapter II revolves around a critique of sections of the philosophy of medicine literature, based upon the notion that any attempt at a ‘universal’ definition of disease is likely to fail. Chapter III introduces and appraises the work of three thinkers - Edward Shorter, Elaine Showalter and Ian Hacking - in order to give more historical weight to the case study which follows. In Chapter IV, the final chapter, the main body of evidence is presented. The condition under examination is fibromyalgia and the bones of the chapter come from twenty-two semi-structured interviews with patients about their experiences. It is argued that disease definition is not a procedure conducted in the abstract but rather a fleshy, intuitive process that all of us, specialist or not, partake in. It is demonstrated that certain expectations of disease exists among the population - what it should look like, what it should act like - and that these expectations have a greater role in constructing a patient’s identity than is often assumed. It is suggested that a patient might find themselves in harmony with their institutional category, have a pleasant and working relationship with their doctor, but still exist in total discord with those around them on the basis of their condition, a state of affairs not adequately considered or explained by the current philosophy of medicine literature.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the experience of bodily movement as the basis of social interaction. The design concept is based on the exploration of “unfocused interaction” among visitors to a public library (library of Malmo university). This thesis is framed with relevance to the “Soma Design program,” as proposed by Kristina Höök, and it expands Höök’s foundation of attending to bodily senses by paying attention to bodily movement. Moreover, this thesis looks explicitly at the experience of using body movement as the most basic form of human communication in social interaction.Imagining the world in which using body movement is an effective alternative to oral communication motivated me to formulate and select the methodological approach in this thesis project. Research Through Design has been utilizing as the primary process to explore the subject. This concept emerged from the participants’ experiences in exploratory workshops based on somaesthetic techniques focusing on body movement with the help of the body storming method and the experience of using body movement as a tool/medium for creating social interaction. The final concept is presented in this thesis through the Wizard of Oz prototype. The final concept focuses on tow keys areas: 1: individuals’ awareness of their body movement. 2: Embodied interaction and using technology along with natural body movement to create social interaction.

Burke, Grace. "Smokers' talk : using Membership Categorisation Analysis to look at smokers' talk." Thesis, Ulster University, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.535149.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis represents an exploration of smokers’ talk taking an ethnomethodologically- inspired conversation analysis approach to the data, with a specific focus on Membership Categorisation Analysis. Recent MCA research has revealed the unique insight that the approach offers to analysts interested in the study of everyday interaction and how individuals produce themselves as ‘certain types of people’ in the context of their routine encounters. The analysis of categories as a product of talk offers an alternative way of viewing categories that is empirically grounded in routine talk-in-interaction, as an accomplishment of the participants. The research presented here examines the demonstrable relevance of the category ‘smoker’ for participants in their categorisation of themselves and others and reveals both the situated nature of this category work and the implicit normative assumptions relating to the activity of smoking that speakers draw on as they negotiate, accept or reject category incumbency. The research presented here thus examines smokers’ talk in order to bring to light taken-for-granted members’ knowledge of smokers and smoking as a sociological phenomenon. In doing so, it also examines how the category of smoker interacts with other categories and how speakers invoke the relevance of other categories in relation to smoking. A further insight that emerges is how speakers orient to smoking as a morally accountable behaviour, and how this ultimately has implications for their productions of themselves and others as types of smokers. In doing this the study contributes both to our understanding of smoking as a sociological phenomenon and to the work of MCA, more specifically to the debate between MCA and CA, highlighting the argument that a reflexive approach, drawing on both categorical and sequential analysis, offers a more comprehensive approach to analysing talk in interaction.

Viklund, Erika. "Therapy talk and talk about therapy : Client-identified important events in psychotherapy." Licentiate thesis, Linköpings universitet, Psykologi, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-111919.

Full text
Abstract:
Capturing and studying the moments in psychotherapy that clients find most important can help us understand more about how psychotherapy works, what the curative ingredients are, and by what processes they are mediated. Qualitative research in this area has, so far, mainly focused on describing, and categorizing clients’ experiences of important factors and events. The methods employed to analyse the data have been rather limited in variation and are usually based on a realist epistemology, according to which data are basically treated as reflections of the clients’ actual experiences. This entails a risk of overlooking and obscuring other aspects of therapy and the therapy process that are equally important to explore, for example the microprocesses of interaction within important events, or how clients’ accounts of their experiences are shaped and limited by the context in which they are produced. The overall aim of this licentiate thesis was to explore client-identified important events in psychotherapy with a focus on studying therapy talk and talk about therapy from a social constructionist point of view, which would allow a closer exploration of the understudied areas mentioned above. In Study I, Conversation Analysis was used to explore the interaction taking place between seven client-therapist dyads in 16 client-identified important events collected from their third sessions. The analysis identified that 12 of the events contained clients’ expressions of disagreement. Three different ways that the therapists handled the disagreement were discerned: The first, and most common, way was to orient to the client’s cues of disagreement by inviting the client to elaborate on his or her point of view and to establish a shared understanding acceptable to both participants. The second way was to orient to the client’s disagreement cues but define the therapist’s own point view as more relevant than the client’s, and the third way was a single case in which the therapist did not in any way orient to the client’s disagreement cues. In Study II, two qualitative methods based on different epistemologies were used to analyse the same set of eight clients’ accounts of 18 important events. The aim was to first identify what types of events clients describe as important, and then explore how their accounts of these events were contextually shaped and  organized, and the consequences of this. The first analysis, a content analysis, yielded descriptions of five different types of events, which were similar to the ones found in previous research on important events. The second analysis, a discourse analysis, demonstrated how clients’ accounts were not only influenced by the participants’ ability to accurately remember and report their experience, but also by what was sayable within the context of the research interview. In conclusion, the two studies demonstrate how qualitative methods based on a socialconstructive perspective can contribute to our understanding of clientidentified important events by highlighting and describing participants’ use of language in interaction, and its forms and  functions within therapy sessions and in research interviews. The findings point out the need to broaden the range of qualitative methods used in psychotherapy research in general and indicate the potential value of methods like CA and DA to psychotherapy process research and research on important events in particular.

Abstract:
Background: Recent advances in the psychological understanding of psychosis are supplementing the traditional medical model approach to schizophrenia. Furthermore, a patient-centred model of care is being introduced throughout healthcare promoting collaborative care inline with patients’ values and preferences. Research suggests that patients with schizophrenia wish to talk about their psychotic symptoms. In contrast psychiatrists may be reluctant to engage in discussion of psychotic symptoms leading to potential difficulties in delivering truly collaborative care. Aims: The current study aims to explore the aspects of psychotic experiences patients wish to discuss in psychiatric consultations, as well as the features on which psychiatrists focus by applying thematic analysis to extracts of naturally occurring, routine outpatient psychiatric consultations between patients with psychosis and their psychiatrists. Results: Sixty-five consultations from a total of 143 contained at least one discussion about a present positive psychotic symptom. Patients with higher clinical levels of positive psychotic symptoms were more likely to discuss psychotic symptoms during the consultation. Both psychiatrists and patients initiated discussions of symptoms, but psychiatrists were more likely to end the discussion. Conclusions: The focus of psychiatrists during discussion of positive psychotic symptoms in consultations does not correspond to the features of psychosis most salient to patients. In order to be more patient-centred the focus and aims of the psychiatric consultation may need to be adjusted to more closely target the concerns of patients.

Abstract:
In Georgia the non-governmental organisations are active and manifold despite the Sovietheritage of a trampled civil society and lengthy violent conflicts, frozen yet not forgotten.NGOs seek to deal with the problematic issues through information, strengthening civilsociety and building bridges between antagonists. An organisation consists of individuals andthe work is done through “their” individuals towards other individuals. Martha Nussbaum'sapproach on human well-being, which does not count income or ask for a minimum set ofutensils for a universal basic standard, is being offered as a more just way of judging nationalgrowth than the GDP. Nussbaum's approach of basic human capability cherishes individualityand different cultures, recognising that not every one wishes the same things in order to feelfulfilled. The capability approach allows persons to choose a preferred way of life, yet listsdemands of equal opportunities to all for reaching personal development and accessingpossibilities. By analysing the narrations of NGO-staff members thematically according to thecapability to affiliate, a relevant feel for the possibilities of successful and satisfyinginteraction in the NGO-sector emerges and some contemporary issues in the local contexts arepresented. The interviews were conducted in Georgia during two months in 2010, and thefocus was on relationships and experiences connected to work. Exercising the capability ingood measure is presented in the narratives as gaining the individual increased emotion andfurthering personal development. Areas where living up to the capability is hampered becomealso visible: affiliating may brush against existing stereotypical norms in the society. Yet theindividuals challenge the restrictions and in doing so develop their civil society andthemselves.

Abstract:
In this research work, the business project Just Talk will be developed. Just Talk is defined as a mean that allows real connections, based on common interests. This app is made for men and women between 18 and 25 years old, who live in Peru belonging to the NSE A, B and C, who have free time and willingness to meet new people. During the development, our team made experiments that gave us the ability to validate the problem, which is based on the difficulty of interaction that arises when starting a conversation with a person who is newly known through social networks. To carry out this project, an analysis was made to the industry and its competitors, in addition to various validations to verify the viability of Just Talk, as well as the interest of our target audience. Strategies were made based on the Marketing Mix (price, promotion, place and product) to make a sales projection, establish our expenses and revenues and the financial plan. As a result, with an initial investment of S/65, 540.36 for the launch of the application, we will be making profits of S/1,795,649.91 for the first year, S/8,929,878.28 for the second year and S/9,467,486.25 for the third year.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to clarify university students’, between the ages of 18 and 25 years, awareness of and attitudes towards greenwashing in advertising as well as understand a potential connection between their awareness and attitudes and their perceived environmental engagement. One quantitative method and one qualitative method were used to collect data; an online survey with 148 respondents was conducted, and three separate focus group interviews were held and later transcribed and analyzed through a qualitative text analysis. Two theoretical frameworks were used: Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model to process audience reception and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to process the topic of greenwashing. The results of the study showed that the students’ awareness of greenwashing was high and that their attitudes were almost exclusively negative towards it. The students’ awareness of greenwashing was shown to possibly affect their decoding of advertisements, as they tended to have more positive attitudes towards advertisements in which they judged greenwashing to not be very prominent. The students’ perceived environmental engagement could be linked to their awareness of greenwashing but no clear connection between their perceived environmental engagement and their attitudes towards greenwashing could be found. Our conclusion states that greenwashing may become an increasingly ineffective advertising strategy in the future, as current students, who have the ability to see through and not be deceived by greenwashing, will be in decision-making positions within a couple of decades and may demand stricter regulations.

Abstract:
I am a poet. As an undergraduate, I explored the other genres of writing—I wrote short stories, attempted a novel-length piece, and crafted essays. While I found plays interesting, I could not write one satisfactorily. But poetry fit like an extension of myself. I could fuse my voice and my ideas in stanzas and images, and I found myself weighing words and sounds as I constructed the lines. It was only natural that I pursue mastery in poetry when I returned for my Masters of Fine Arts. The material presented in this document is the culmination of two years of specialized study in how to craft poetry. In those two years, I have maintained the idea that this collection be relatable, feminist, and emotionally powerful. While the poetry has certainly evolved over that two-year span, the ideas kept each piece connected to my envisioned whole. The poems revolve around different obsessions I harbored while writing. I meditate on various relationships, personal experiences, and striking images and feelings I felt deserved attention. Of course, this collection is intensely personal, but I believe that it is through the personal that we can reach the general, which is what makes these poems accessible. I also used this manuscript as a device for exploration and play. Some poems follow strict formal guidelines, and others meander to their destination. Some are short and concise, others long and nebulous. But each is refined and given exceptional thought. I believe that readers will clearly see how much study was necessary to write these poems; it is through reading the works of the great poets before me that I was able to come to them. My influences show, not only in allusions, but in the choices I’ve made and the structure of the poems themselves. I submit this manuscript as the culmination of my work, in partial fulfilment of a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing.

Chand, Arya Kumar Srustidhar <1984&gt. "Three essays on cheap talk." Doctoral thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/3017.

Full text
Abstract:
The three essays in this thesis are based on strategic communication associated with the Cheap Talk literature. The first essay is a discussion of strategic communication that arises in the classical resource allocation problem. The second essay focuses on Cheap Talk where the signals of the senders and the receiver are correlated. The third essay explores the theme where a sender while transmitting the information takes into account that the information may be leaked by the receiver to third party.

Abstract:
The paper investigates the role of central bank communication for monetary policy implementation. Firstly, we use a multi-disciplinary approach to disentangle several problematic contingencies of central bank communication, analyzing from this perspective the role of complex phenomena such as public opinion, perceptions, beliefs, framing, subjective probability, rhetoric, persuasion, cognitive limits and distortions, psychological and cultural biases etc. The result is a comprehensive survey of theory and practice in central bank communication, from the perspective of political science, social-psychology and media studies. Secondly, we attempt to draw on more psychological realism to central bank communication in the context of financial crises, using a parallel with risk management in the case of natural disasters. Thirdly, we conceive central bank information as a public good, thereby we construct a novel schematic model of supply and demand based on two respective behavioral logistic functions, in order to derive central bank informational equilibrium.

Wegerif, Rupert. "Computers, talk and learning : using computers to help coach reasoning through talk across the curriculum." Thesis, Open University, 1995. http://oro.open.ac.uk/56459/.

Full text
Abstract:
The main theme of this thesis is the role of computers as a support for reasoning through talk in the classroom. A second, closely linked, theme is the role of reasoning through talk in general intellectual development. In the first part of the thesis the two areas of the teaching of thinking skills and the use of computers as a support for cooperative work in classrooms are explored through critical reviews of the literature and through two empirical studies. The findings of this exploratory research lead to the development of a theoretical framework for the use of computers in classrooms. This theoretical framework consists of the characterisation of a type of talk that is effective in promoting general intellectual development, a model of the structure of educational activities in which groups of children work with computers and a set of principles for the design of software to support reasoned discussion. In the second part of the thesis the theoretical framework is explored and tested through the development and implementation of an intervention programme. A new methodology is developed to evaluate this intervention programme integrating a quasi-experimental method with both qualitative discourse analysis and computer-based discourse analysis. The findings of the evaluation support four key hypotheses which emerge from the theoretical framework. First, that there is a link between the coaching of reasoning through talk and performance on tests of general reasoning ability. Second, that the quality of computer-supported collaborative learning can be enhanced through the off-computer coaching of exploratory talk. Third, that group work at computers can in turn be used effectively to extend an educational programme designed to coach exploratory talk across the curriculum. Fourth, that computer-based collaborative learning can - be used to integrate active peer-learning with directed teaching. These findings have significant implications for educational theory and practice.

Tracy, Jacob Dennis, and Jacob Dennis Tracy. "Mapping Pre-Service Teacher Talk: Variations in Talk About Mathematics, Ability, and Themselves as Mathematical Learners." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625620.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been argued that teachers do not always teach in the ways their teacher education programs promoted. One cause of this problem has to do with teachers' conceptions about mathematics and ability being incompatible with the visions of mathematics that teacher educators promote. For example, teacher educators may emphasize the need for conceptual understanding but a teacher who equates understanding with being correct and fast will enact this goal differently from someone who expects students to be able to explain and communicate their understanding. The way a teacher understands what it means to do mathematics and be good at mathematics will influence their future teaching. Furthermore, the messages teachers send to their students about who they are as mathematical learners are full of messages about what it means to do and be good at mathematics. Additionally, these messages can have a long-term impact on how those students view themselves and the decisions they make for their future. This study uses qualitative methods to better understand pre-service teacher (PST) talk, how their talk relates, and how their talk changes over time. I describe PST talk as it relates to mathematics (M), ability (A), and themselves as mathematical learners (P) (the three components of the MAP framework). This study took place with the PSTs in two sections of a mathematical content course for elementary school teachers taught by the researcher. First, using grounded theory, I developed codes to understand how these PSTs talked in regards to the three components and applied these codes to written reflections at the beginning and end of our course. After analyzing the data I selected and interviewed 14 PSTs one year after our course. Again, I applied the same codes to their talk in the interview to see how their talk continued to change. Select interview PSTs were then chosen to represent common and uncommon examples of PST talk. Findings from this study show that talk across the MAP framework was related and that this talk became more standards-aligned by the end of the content course. However, the findings also provide a much more nuanced insight into different relationships and changes in talk. One finding shows that when variations in PST talk existed between framework components it was most commonly due to PSTs talking about mathematics in a more traditional way than when they talked about ability or themselves as mathematical learners. Another finding shows that during the interviews (one year after our course) PSTs continued to talk about themselves and abilities in mostly standards-aligned ways but reverted towards more traditional talk when discussing mathematics and how someone demonstrates their mathematical understanding. These findings have important implications for future research and for teacher educators. First, the relationships between the components of the MAP framework suggest that addressing PSTs conceptions of mathematics and their conceptions of ability may affect how they talk about individuals as mathematical learners. Second, the findings show which aspects in the MAP framework PSTs more readily talk about in standards-aligned ways. This provides insights into which areas teacher educators may want to emphasize more in trying to promote changes in PST talk. Lastly, these findings also show which aspects of PST talk maintain over a longer time frame and which aspects need a greater sustained emphasis. All of this is necessary as we support PSTs to think and talk about mathematics and mathematical abilities in standards-aligned ways that are truly supportive of all students.

Abstract:

This essay is predominantly a qualitative piece of research by which I mean it is mainly based on my own observations and analysis of the material. To do this I will cover the theories of communities of practice together with gendered language and apply it to the community and language of the online game World of Warcraft.

Through using collected chat logs, I will analyse conversations held in World of Warcraft with a specific focus on gender and identity, I will then compare these to examples of face-to-face conversations. My analysis will draw on the works of theorists such as Holmes (2006), Sunderland and Litosseliti (2002), Eckert and McConnel-Ginet (1992) amongst others. This study will show that although Netspeak within World of Warcraft is written and not spoken, the strategies for creating gendered identities are not very different from real life discourse. The essay will be a general study of gendered language in a virtual community and will discover that there is an extremely nuanced language within the limited communication medium of chat, and lays the ground for more extensive research on the subject.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Languages within one language family may be so closely related that their speakers often communicate, each using their own language. This phenomenon was investigated in African, Germanic and Romance languages and coined as semicommunication by Haugen (1966), and later became receptive multilingualism by Braunmü
ller (2002). This research attempts to find out if receptive multilingual communication is possible in Slavonic languages (Polish, Russian and Ukrainian). Besides, it was a great importance to define whether the success of communication is symmetric among the speakers of the mentioned languages. Finally, various cases of problematic understanding were analyzed with the main emphasis on the speakers&rsquo
strategies when they try to overcome reception problems. Methodically, 4 Russian-Ukrainian, 4 Polish-Ukrainian and 4 Polish-Russian conversations were recorded with the use of digital camera. Cases of problematic understanding were defined and transcribed with Exmaralda program, Partitur editor. Number of problematic utterances in relation to total number of utterances in discourse was the measure of communication success in each language constellation. In order to see the overall picture of how receptive multilingualism works in the three languages and in each constellation separately, the statistic research was done with SPSS program. The findings of the research revealed that receptive multilingual communication among Polish, Russian and Ukrainian speakers is generally successful, however, not symmetric with respect to understanding degree in different constellations.

Abstract:
Despite improvements in cancer management over the past 25 years, unrelieved symptoms continue to be reported. Little is known about how patients' problems and concerns are communicated to professionals during oncology treatment. This research investigates communication between cancer patients and clinicians in hospital outpatient clinics. Data were collected by non-participant observation and audio recording of consultations. Analyses were by qualitative content analysis and conversation analysis. An Objectives, Strategies and Tactics model was applied to organise the findings. 74 consultations between cancer patients and 15 doctors were observed and audio recorded. Pain talk is defined and identified as a substantial topic, occurring in 39/74 consultations. Doctor-initiated questions are the predominant discourse feature occupying over two-fifths of pain talk sequences. Their questions are prominent not only in initiating discussions but also in directing further talk. In other words, clinicians' questions control both the content and order of talk within pain talk sequences ( eg, over three-quarters of doctor-initiated questions are in a closed form which focus narrowly on limited physical aspects of patients' pain). It is argued that this limited information exchange alongside other communication tactics, is used to identify the 'right kind' of pain which may benefit from cancer therapy and to truncate talk of problems perceived to be outside of this specialist remit.

Abstract:
Have you ever listened to a speech, seriously attempted to discern the speaker’s message, then realize you have forgotten most of, if not, the entire message moments after the speech is finished? Far too often audiences sit through a presentation focusing as best as they can, only to have the speaker craft a message in a way that is nearly impossible for the audience to remember. The best speakers not only deliver a memorable message, but also one that inspires their audience to action or change of mindset. Speakers at Ted Conferences are faced with a difficult challenge: they are given roughly 20 minutes to deliver a speech that is both unforgettable and inspiring. This thesis will examine how to craft speeches that are both memorable and inspiring.
