Abstract:
In Euripides’ Medea, Jason expresses a preference for fame over riches or musical talent such as that which Orpheus possesses. Orpheus was well-known for the supernaturally persuasive qualities of his music, and as the play makes clear, Jason’s rejection of Orpheus’ talents is not purely rhetorical—he lacks the persuasive skill of Orpheus, skill which he needs to reconcile Medea to his new marriage. Medea is persistently compared to things which Orpheus is able to influence through his song, such as rocks, lions, and bulls, highlighting Jason’s failure to persuade where the mythical singer succeeds. Jason is, however, successful in persuading his new bride; as a lover rather than a husband, he possesses Orpheus’ abilities. The implied comparison between Jason and Orpheus foreshadows the death of Jason’s Corinthian bride and Jason’s downfall at the hands of a woman.

Abstract:
Abstract The tension between the literary styles of Liu Xiaochuo 劉孝綽 (481–539) and Dao Qia 到洽 (490–527) can be understood as a debate between poetic genius and a more scholarly focus, signaling a confrontation between the capital's literary camps in the Putong reign 普通 (520–527) of the Liang Dynasty 梁 (502–557). The major difference between the literary camps lies in the consideration given to natural poetic talent versus erudition in writings. When Xiao Gang 蕭綱 (503–551), Liu Xiaochuo's supporter, became crown prince in 531, his own conflict with the scholarly group including Dao Gai 到溉 (477–548) and Zhu Yi 朱异 (483–540) probably prompted his “Letter to the Prince of Xiangdong” 與湘東王書 (Yu Xiangdong Wang shu). In this letter Xiao Gang displays his literary view deemphasizing scholarly learning and erudition in poetry. By comparison Xiao Yan 蕭衍 (464–549) and Xiao Yi 蕭繹 (508–555) valued scholarly learning still more and regarded literature as a relatively insignificant talent or minor accomplishment. Xiao Gang represents a departure—by placing literary talent above scholarship, he catered to the fashion among the Liang Dynasty's nobility for reciting poetry and writing fu 賦 (rhapsody) while “rarely taking classical studies as their profession” 罕以經朮為業 and thus elevated the social status of belles lettres.

Abstract:
Children’s drawings are implicated in their emotional, cognitive, artistic, and semiotic development, raising the question of how early educators may best facilitate drawing development. This study compared three activities to determine their relative efficacy in promoting children’s drawing. Seventy-seven preschoolers from a Head Start program were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: storybook reading, block building, or dramatic pretend play games (DPPG). Interventions were conducted over 8 weeks, and children’s free drawings during each session were rated on five dimensions: creativity, talent, spatial complexity, color, and human content. Taken together, the interventions produced significant growth in overall drawing, particularly for children who were initially more skilled at drawing. Comparisons indicated that storybook reading and block building generated significantly better overall drawing than DPPG. Story time was more beneficial than DPPG for creativity, talent, and spatial complexity, while block building was more beneficial than DPPG for children’s use of color.

Abstract:
Abstract As a child in Corduba, a Romanized city in southern Spain, the Elder Seneca was heavily influenced by Roman society and literary tastes. He left his home and his family, for long periods of time as an adult, to experience the talents of professional declaimers in Rome. From his memory of the controversiae and suasoriae of these declaimers, he wrote the Oratorum et rhetoruni sententiae, divisiones, colores. In his collection, along with various Roman and Greek declaimers, are several Spanish declaimers. Seneca claims he included them “not out of excess of enthusiasm for them, but on the basis of considered judgement” (Con. 10.pr.16). Here, I examine how Seneca presents these Spanish declaimers and their distinguishing characteristics, in comparison with Roman declamatory standards, and consider his purpose in doing so.

Abstract:
Innovation economies are a departure from traditional modes of development. Where the latter privileges activities like resource extraction and infrastructure construction, the former emphasizes less material approaches such as knowledge-building and talent creation. In its drive to become a knowledge-based economy, Dubai may face challenges of perceptual legitimacy in its newly formed innovation clusters. At the same time, however, a strength of image bulwarks its established clusters like finance and logistics. This chapter summarizes best practices and existing theory on cluster branding, briefly examines several innovation clusters in Europe and the United States, and finally ruminates on the opportunities and challenges faced by Dubai in creating strong brands that communicate innovation.

Abstract:
The relevance of the investigated problem is related to transformational changes in primary school. The result of these changes was the construction of a new school that will function on the basis of joint and active activity, the atmosphere of research and cognitive cooperation between the teacher and students teaching who will be carried out through research. The purpose of the study is to substantiate theoretical foundations of the problem formation of research skills of primary school students in the educational process of the New Ukrainian school; develop and experimentally check effectiveness of organizational and pedagogical conditions for the implementation of this process. Research task: based on the analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature to reveal the theoretical foundations of the problem of formation of research skills of primary school students in the educational process of the New Ukrainian school; diagnose the initial state of formation of research skills of primary school students; develop and theoretically substantiate organizational and pedagogical conditions for the formation of research ability of primary school students in the educational process of the New Ukrainian school; carry out an experimental check of the effectiveness of organizational and pedagogical conditions of the researched process. Object of the study is the formation primary school students’ research skills in the educational process of the New Ukrainian school. Subject of the study are the organizational and pedagogical conditions of formation of research skills of primary school students in the educational process of the New Ukrainian school. Research methods: theoretical (analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature, synthesis, comparison, generalization); empirical (pedagogical experiment (determinative, formative and control stages)); diagnostic methods (pedagogical observation, questionnaires, testing, poll)). The theoretical foundations of the problem of formation of research skills of primary school students of the NUS are defined and analyzed in the study, the basis of which are the ideas of scientists who defined the priority concepts of optimal research-oriented orientation of this process: actualization the personally transforming meaning of the search activity of the education seekers; creation of a climate of research and cognitive cooperation; construction subject-subject developmental communication between the teacher and the child as equal partners. Results. It is proved that the education seekers’ organization of educational and research activities should be built on a cognitive and instrumental set of actions of a teacher and a child on a partnership based under certain conditions: motivation and purposeful involvement of students in independent performance of research tasks; taking into account individual and psychophysiological characteristics of students; activation of the intellectual and creative potential of each individual with stimulating the maximum realization of one’s own natural capability, achieving success; effective application of innovative teaching forms and methods. Organizational and pedagogical conditions of formation of research skills of primary school students in the educational process of the NUS have been developed and scientifically substantiated, in particular: providing the educational process with a research focus by creating an educational environment of an active and searching nature; realization of potential talents and opportunities of primary school students during the performance of search and research tasks by application differentiated approach; acquisition and enrichment of primary school students’ research experience through the actualization of developmental subject-subject interaction of teachers and students. Theoretical significance of the research is to discover and scientifically substantiate organizational and pedagogical conditions for the formation of research skills of primary school students in the educational process of the New Ukrainian school. Practical significance of the obtained results of the study is to experimentally check organizational and methodological providing process of the formation of research skills of primary school students in the educational process of the New Ukrainian school.
