Abstract:
AbstractIn Canada, Treaty 1 First Nations brought a claim against the Crown for land debt owed to them since 1871. In 2004, Crown land in Winnipeg became available that, according to the terms of the settlement, should have been offered for purchase to Treaty 1 Nations. Similarly, in New Zealand, the Waikato-Tainui claim arose from historical Crown breaches of the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi. In 1995, a settlement was reached to address the unjust Crown confiscation of Tainui lands. Despite being intended to facilitate the return of traditional territory, compensate for Crown breaches of historic treaties, and indirectly provide opportunity for economic development, in both cases, settlement was met with legal and political challenges. Using a comparative legal analysis, this paper examines how the state continues to use its law-making power to undermine socio-economic development of Indigenous communities in Canada and New Zealand, thereby thwarting opportunity for Indigenous self-determination.

Abstract:
Abstract The Base, one of New Zealand’s largest retail and commercial centres, is situated approximately 7 km north-west of the central business district of Hamilton, New Zealand’s fourth largest city. It is built on a block of land which was requisitioned by the New Zealand government prior to World War II and used as an Air Force Base during the war. The land was returned to the Waikato-Tainui Māori tribal confederation in 1995 as part of a package of reparations relating to the Crown’s mistreatment of the tribe, including its misappropriation of tribal lands. The research reported here, located theoretically within the domain of critical discourse theory, suggests that the semiotoscape of The Base, including, in particular, its linguistic landscape, plays a role in the formation and assertion of contemporary Māori indigenous identity.

Abstract:
The intestinal trematode, Haplorchis taichui (Nishigori, 1924), is an important in public health that causes infection in humans and animals especially in Asia and in parts of Africa and the Americas. Haplorchis taitui metacercariae were found in the gills of Cyprinion macrostomus (Heckel) and Capoeta barroisi persica (Karaman) collected from the Shapour River. Morphological excysted metacercariae were identified as wet mounts under a stereomicroscope. Then, the samples were subjected to molecular analysis. The result showed that 69% of examined fish (n = 30) were diagnosed infected with encysted metacercariae in gills. The mean intensity was 8.3 ± 16.9 parasites per fish. The morphometrical values agree with the findings of other studies with the small differences and polymerase chain reaction product length and nucleotide sequence analysis of 18S ribosomal deoxyribonucleic acid gene showed a similarity of over 99% between the specimens and the Haplorchis taichui (Nishigori, 1924) recorded in GenBank.

Abstract:
Minute intestinal flukes, Haplorchis taichui and H. pumilio, belong to the family Heterophyidae (Trematoda: Platyhelminthes), which have been studied very limited, especially the molecular markers of the mitochondrial genomes (mtDNA) and the ribosome transcription units (rTU or rDNA). We have obtained the complete mitochondrial genome of H. taichui and the coding part of ribosome transcription unit of H. taichui and H. pumilio of Vietnam. Nucleotide and amino acid data were compared between H. taichui and Metagonimus yokogawai for genomic/gene composition, codon usage (skew/skewness), and tandem repeat units (TRU). The complete mtDNA of H. taichui (strain Htai-QT3-VN) with the length of 15,120 bp and M. yokogawai (15,258 bp; Korea; KC330755) contains 36 genes, including 12 protein-coding genes (cox1, cox2, cox3, nad1, nad2, nad3, nad4L, nad4, nad5, nad6, atp6 and cob), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNA); 22 transfer RNA (tRNA or trn) and a noncoding region (NCR) between trnE and trnG, divided into 2 sub-regions containing 5 TRUs (182–183 bp/TRU). H. taichui (Vietnam and Laos) uses A = 19.56%, T = 39.71%, G = 28.34%, C = 12.39% (A + T is 59.27% and G + C is 40.73%) for mtDNA construction, whose skew/skewness value at A+T is negative (–0,340) and G+C is positive (0.392); for 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs) is similar; but for the mito-ribosomal genes (MRGs, of 16S/rrnL and 12S/rrnS) it is less for A+T (57.22%) and more for G+C (42.78%). M. yokogawai had lower A+T (mtDNA/55.68%; PCGs/55.96%; MRGs/54.15%) and higher G+C usage rate than H. taichui. H. taichui of Vietnam and Laos has 10,164 bp encoding for 3,376 amino acids to construct 12 PCGs with the mostly used codons as Phenylalanine (Phe-TTT) and Leucine (Leu-TTG), and the leastly used codonsas Glutamine (Gln-CAA), Arginine (Arg-CGC). Additional condon, Thr-ACA/ACC can be added as the least used in M. yokogawai. The rTU (from 5 '18S to 3' 28S) of H. taichui (7,268 bp) and H. pumilio (7,416 bp) were identified with 5 genomic regions including 18S rDNA, ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, ITS2 and 28S rDNA. The 18S and 5.8S genes of both species were of the same length (1,992 bp for 18S, 160 bp for 5.8S), but different for 28S genes (3,875 bp for H. taichui and 3,870 bp for H. pumilio). ITS1 in H. taichui (797 bp) and ITS2 in H. pumilio (280 bp) do not contain TRUs, whilst ITS1 in H. pumilio (1,106 bp) contains 5 TRUs(136 bp for 3 TRU and 116 bp for 2 TRUs); and ITS2 in H. taichui (444 bp) contain 3 TRUs (83–85 bp/each).

Abstract:
Purpose In today’s Taiwan, sha-cha sauce is an indispensable ingredient for beef hot pot and stir-fried dishes. The purpose of this paper contextualizes the history of sha-cha sauce in Tainan, the oldest city in Taiwan, and argues that sha-cha sauce, introduced by Chaoshan immigrants, has contributed to new styles and habits of beef consumption tastes and habits in the post-1949 Tainan and beyond. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses documentary materials, oral interviews and diaries to explore the relationship between beef consumption and sha-cha sauce. It begins with an historical overview of Taiwan’s beef consumption during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). Then, it focuses on two Chaoshan business enterprises: the Bull-Head, which makes the world’s largest “canned sha-cha sauce,” and the Xiao Haozhou, a Tainan restaurant specializing in sha-cha beef hot pot. Finally, this study analyzes Xinrong Wu, a Tainan gentry whose diary entries from 1933 to 1967 documented the changing dietary habits of beef consumption among Taiwanese. Findings The Chaoshan migrants played an important role in introducing the sha-cha sauce to postcolonial Tainan, and this input bolstered the beef consumption among Taiwanese. The production of sha-cha provided a reliable source of income for these migrants in Tainan, and major businesses like the Bull-Head became the international brands of Taiwanese food products. Research limitations/implications The study, though limited to Tainan, reveals the symbiosis between popularization of sha-cha sauce and widespread beef consumption in Taiwan. Practical implications This study helps researchers examine the connection between Chinese migrations and food culture. Originality/value This paper is an original scholarly investigation of the relationship between food diet and Chaoshan migration in postcolonial Tainan.

Abstract:
AbstractHaplorchis taichui is an intestinal heterophyid fluke that is pathogenic to humans. It is widely distributed in Asia, with a particularly high prevalence in Indochina. Previous work revealed that the lack of gene flow between three distinct populations of Vietnamese H. taichui can be attributed to their geographic isolation with no interconnected river basins. To test the hypothesis that interconnected river basins allow gene flow between otherwise isolated populations of H. taichui, as previously demonstrated for another trematode, Opisthorchis viverrini, we compared the genetic structures of seven populations of H. taichui from various localities in the lower Mekong Basin, in Thailand and Laos, with those in Vietnam, using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) gene. To determine the gene flow between these H. taichui populations, we calculated their phylogenetic relationships, genetic distances and haplotype diversity. Each population showed very low nucleotide diversity at this locus. However, high levels of genetic differentiation between the populations indicated very little gene flow. A phylogenetic analysis divided the populations into four clusters that correlated with the country of origin. The negligible gene flow between the Thai and Laos populations, despite sharing the Mekong Basin, caused us to reject our hypothesis. Our data suggest that the distribution of H. taichui populations was incidentally associated with national borders.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Dorsal vessel morphogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster serves as a superb system with which to study the cellular and genetic bases of heart tube formation. We used a cardioblast-expressed Toll-GFP transgene to screen for additional genes involved in heart development and identified tailup as a locus essential for normal dorsal vessel formation. tailup, related to vertebrate islet1, encodes a LIM homeodomain transcription factor expressed in all cardioblasts and pericardial cells of the heart tube as well as in associated lymph gland hematopoietic organs and alary muscles that attach the dorsal vessel to the epidermis. A transcriptional enhancer regulating expression in these four cell types was identified and used as a tailup-GFP transgene with additional markers to characterize dorsal vessel defects resulting from gene mutations. Two reproducible phenotypes were observed in mutant embryos: hypoplastic heart tubes with misaligned cardioblasts and the absence of most lymph gland and pericardial cells. Conversely, a significant expansion of the lymph glands and abnormal morphology of the heart were observed when tailup was overexpressed in the mesoderm. Tailup was shown to bind to two DNA recognition sequences in the dorsal vessel enhancer of the Hand basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor gene, with one site proven to be essential for the lymph gland, pericardial cell, and Svp/Doc cardioblast expression of Hand. Together, these results establish Tailup as being a critical new transcription factor in dorsal vessel morphogenesis and lymph gland formation and place this regulator directly upstream of Hand in these developmental processes.

Abstract:
Abstract Persistent scatterers SAR interferometry (PS-InSAR) was employed to monitor surface deformation in and around the Tainan tableland using 20 advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) images from the ENVISAT satellite taken during the period from 2005 May 19 to 2008 September 25. In our study, we have found that the uplift rate of the northern Tainan tableland is faster than the southern tableland. The slant range displacement (SRD) rate for the area north along the precise leveling array is about 5 to 10 mm/yr with respect to the western edge of the Tainan tableland, whereas the SRD rate for the area south of the leveling array is about 1 to 5 mm/yr. In addition, the uplifted area extends eastward to the Tawan lowland with a maximum SRD rate of nearly 10 mm/yr, which is almost the same as the rate of the Tainan tableland. Results of this study differ from those suggested in previous researches that employed ERS-1/2 radar images taken from 1996 to 1999 and the differential interferometry synthetic aperture radar (D-InSAR) technique. Our findings indicated that the Tawan lowland no longer subsides with respect to the western edge of the Tainan tableland, and that both northern and southern areas are experiencing uplift.

Abstract:
AbstractGastrointestinal helminth infection likely affects the gut microbiome, in turn affecting host health. To investigate the effect of intestinal parasite status on the gut microbiome, parasitic infection surveys were conducted in communities in Nan Province, Thailand. In total, 1047 participants submitted stool samples for intestinal parasite examination, and 391 parasite-positive cases were identified, equating to an infection prevalence of 37.3%. Intestinal protozoan species were less prevalent (4.6%) than helminth species. The most prevalent parasite was the minute intestinal fluke Haplorchis taichui (35.9%). Amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA was conducted to investigate the gut microbiome profiles of H. taichui-infected participants compared with those of parasite-free participants. Prevotella copri was the dominant bacterial operational taxonomic unit (OTU) in the study population. The relative abundance of three bacterial taxa, Ruminococcus, Roseburia faecis and Veillonella parvula, was significantly increased in the H. taichui-infected group. Parasite-negative group had higher bacterial diversity (α diversity) than the H. taichui-positive group. In addition, a significant difference in bacterial community composition (β diversity) was found between the two groups. The results suggest that H. taichui infection impacts the gut microbiome profile by reducing bacterial diversity and altering bacterial community structure in the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract:
Although Taiwan arguably needs civil and official collaboration on environmental protection, the implementation of an efficient system of environmental regulations has often been hindered by the many actors involved in the process of environmental governance (state, economic actors, civil society, media), whose interests are divergent. Consequently, there is no uniform, homogeneous authority for environmental governance but rather a variety of official and less official agents of authority whose interests and powers overlap and compete. In this paper we will introduce a case study dealing with the controversy surrounding the construction of an alternative road connecting Danshui ([Formula: see text]) with Taibei City (namely, the Danshui North Shore Road Project, [Formula: see text], Danbei daolu) to elucidate what the key influences are that govern environmental power dynamics between different agents with conflicting (or, sometimes, colluding) interests and how these multiple levels of interaction are negotiated by the various players. Our hypothesis holds that although environmental policies are, for the most part, mandated from the top, at the local level their implementation can be bypassed, altered or stalled by these various agents.

Abstract:
Heterophyidiasis caused by minute intestinal flukes becomes of public concern in many countries worldwide. Haplorchis taichui and H. pumilio, belonging to the family Heterophyidae (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) are two of many infecting humans and commonly found in Vietnam. Sequence study of these two small intestinal flukes is still very limited, hence we need more prospective markers for taxonomic identification and classification. This study provides complete coding sequence of the ribosomal transcription units (rTU) from H. taichui and H. pumilio (Vietnamese samples) and demonstrates the use of complete 28S rDNA sequences for phylogenetic analysis. The complete coding sequence of the rTU (from 5' 18S to 3' 28S), consisting of complete 18S, ITS-1, 5.8S, ITS2 and complete 28S rRNA genes and spacers, from H. taichui (7,268 bp) and H. pumilio (7,416 bp) from human hosts in Vietnam, were determined and annotated. The 18S and 5.8S genes of both species were of the same length (1,992 bp/18S, 160 bp/5.8S), but 28S genes differed (3,875 bp/H. taichui and 3,870 bp/H. pumilio). ITS-1 in H. taichui (797 bp) and ITS-2 in H. pumilio (280 bp) do not contain tandem repeat units (TRUs), while ITS-1 in H. pumilio (1,106 bp) contains 3 TRUs of 136 bp/each and 2 TRUs of 116 bp/each and ITS-2 in H. taichui (444 bp) contain 3 TRUs (83–85 bp/each). A phylogenetic tree inferred from the alignment of complete 28S rDNA sequences of 32 trematode strains/species, including 2 Vietnamese Haplorchis spp. and 24 species of 8 families in the suborders Xiphidiata (families Nanophyetidae, Paragonimidae, Collyriclidae), Opisthorchiata (Heterophyidae, Opisthorchiidae), and Echinostomata (Echinostomatidae, Fasciolidae). and Schistosoma japonicum of the family Schistosomatidae is used as an outgroup. The topology of the phylogenetic tree clearly confirmed the status of the Vietnamese H. taichui and H. pumilio species. These species gathered in a group (in the family Heterophyidae) clearly identified in the position of "sister” group to those in the family Opisthorchiidae (suborder Opisthorchiata, superfamily Opisthorchioidea).

Abstract:
The wood structure of Syringa oblata var. giraldii growing on the northem slope of Mount Taibei varies with increasing altitude, rainfall and to some extent with plant size and stern diameter. On Mount Taibei rainfall increases with altitude from 1000-1800 m. Average growth ring width, vessel member length, vessel diameter, fibre-tracheid length and diameter, and ray height increase with altitude and rainfall; vessel frequency, ray frequency, and percentage of solitary vessels decrease along the same ecological gradient. These results are discussed against the background of general ecological trends: the unusual reversal of the altitudinal trends can be accounted for by the rainfall pattern associated with plant size variation on the northern slope of Mount Taibei.

Abstract:
An increase in fungal spores in ambient air is reported during a spike in particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) aerosols generated during dust or smog events. However, little is known about the impact of ambient bioaerosols on fungal infections in humans. To identify the correlation between the incidence of pulmonary aspergillosis and PM-associated bioaerosols (PM2.5 and PM10), we retrospectively analyzed data between 2015 and 2018 (first stage) and prospectively analyzed data in 2019 (second stage). Patient data were collected from patients in three medical institutions in Tainan, a city with a population of 1.88 million, located in southern Taiwan. PM data were obtained from the Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network. Overall, 544 non-repeated aspergillosis patients (first stage, n = 340; second stage, n = 204) were identified and enrolled for analysis. The trend of aspergillosis significantly increased from 2015 to 2019. Influenza A (H1N1) and ambient PMs (PM2.5 and PM10) levels had significant effects on aspergillosis from 2015 to 2018. However, ambient PMs and influenza A (H1N1) in Tainan were correlated with the occurrence of aspergillosis in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Overall (2015–2019), aspergillosis was significantly correlated with influenza (p = 0.002), influenza A (H1N1) (p < 0.001), and PM2.5 (p = 0.040) in Tainan City. Using a stepwise regression model, influenza A (H1N1) (p < 0.0001) and Tainan PM10 (p = 0.016) could significantly predict the occurrence of aspergillosis in Tainan. PM-related bioaerosols and influenza A (H1N1) contribute to the incidence of pulmonary aspergillosis.

Be to, jis mokė mokinius kaip tapti laisvais ir nepriklausomais piliečiais, gebančiais svarstyti problemas, remiantis savo įsitikinimais. Etiniu ir politiniu požiūriu, ugdymas taikai taip pat buvo ugdymas pokyčiams ir teisingumui, solidarumui, kultūrų ir tautų sambūviui. Milani pasiūlytas ugdymas taikai kvietė įvairių gebėjimų mokinius, įvairių partijų šalininkus diskutuoti, o svarbiausia, sugyventi vieniems su kitais.

Abstract:
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype (GT) 6 is the most genetically diverse GT and mainly distributed in Southeast Asia and south China but not Taiwan. Earlier studies showed the major HCV GTs in Taiwan were GT 1b and 2 with very rare GT 6 except in injection drug users (IDUs), and subtype 6a is the main GT 6 subtype among IDUs. Recently, we reported a much higher prevalence (18.3%) of GT 6 in Tainan City, southern Taiwan. This study was designed to clarify the subtypes of GT 6 in this endemic area. A total of 3022 (1343 men and 1679 women) HCV viremic patients were enrolled. Subtypes of GT 6 were determined by sequencing of core/E1 and nonstructural protein 5B in 322 of 518 GT 6 patients. The overall GT 6 prevalence rate was 17.1% (518/3022), with higher prevalence districts (>25%) located in northern Tainan. A novel 6g-related subtype is the most prevalent subtype (81.0%), followed by 6w (10.8%), 6a (7.5%), and 6n (0.7%). The high GT 6 prevalence in Tainan was mainly due to a novel 6g-related subtype and 6w. These two subtypes could be indigenous in Tainan with characteristic geographic distribution.

Abstract:
AbstractThe liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, and the minute intestinal fluke, Haplorchis taichui, are prevalent in many Asian countries. This study analysed the patterns of infections of O. viverrini and H. taichui in Lahanam and Thakhamlien villages (Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR), in two cross-sectional investigations. Out of a total of 207 human participants, post-anthelmintic treatment positivity rates for expelled worms were 170 (82.1%) for H. taichui and 65 (31.4%) for O. viverrini. Both these species co-exist in the study villages. When each parasite was analysed separately, H. taichui infections reached a plateau among people aged >20 years. Opisthorchis viverrini infection rates were highest in the age group 21–30 years, with decreasing infection rates after the age of 30. Our findings indicated that fish-borne trematode infections were more prevalent among adults. Fish, common intermediate hosts, were acquired in the study area for analysis. The examination of 35 species of fish as intermediate hosts found O. viverrini metacercariae in only six species, and these were found mostly during the month of November. Many farmers who live on the rice fields obtain their food from their immediate environment, including these intermediate-host fish, potentially putting them at greater risk of O. viverrini infection. By contrast, H. taichui metacercariae were found in three species of fish obtained from the market, meaning that anyone could consume them and become infected. If people who work in rice fields limit the species of fish they consume, or avoid consuming raw fish during the month of November, they may reduce their risk of O. viverrini infection.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Streptomyces clavuligerus is a gram-positive filamentous bacterium notable for producing clavulanic acid (CA), an inhibitor of β-lactamase enzymes, which confers resistance to bacteria against several antibiotics. Here we present a comparative analysis of the morphological and metabolic response of S. clavuligerus linked to the CA production under low and high shear stress conditions in a 2D rocking-motion single-use bioreactor (CELL-tainer ®) and stirred tank bioreactor (STR), respectively. The CELL-tainer® guarantees high turbulence and enhanced volumetric mass transfer at low shear stress, which (in contrast to bubble columns) allows the investigation of the impact of shear stress without oxygen limitation. The results indicate that high shear forces do not compromise the viability of S. clavuligerus cells; even higher specific growth rate, biomass, and specific CA production rate were observed in the STR. Under low shear forces in the CELL-tainer® the mycelial diameter increased considerably (average diameter 2.27 in CELL-tainer® vs. 1.44 µm in STR). This suggests that CA production may be affected by a lower surface-to-volume ratio which would lead to lower diffusion and transport of nutrients, oxygen, and product. The present study shows that there is a strong correlation between macromorphology and CA production, which should be an important aspect to consider in industrial production of CA.

Abstract:
A shift in dengue cases toward the adult population, accompanied by an increased risk of severe cases of dengue in the elderly, has created an important emerging issue in the past decade. To understand the level of past DENV infection among older adults after a large dengue outbreak occurred in southern Taiwan in 2015, we screened 1498 and 2603 serum samples from healthy residents aged ≥ 40 years in Kaohsiung City and Tainan City, respectively, to assess the seroprevalence of anti-DENV IgG in 2016. Seropositive samples were verified to exclude cross-reaction from Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), using DENV/JEV-NS1 indirect IgG ELISA. We further identified viral serotypes and secondary DENV infections among positive samples in the two cities. The overall age-standardized seroprevalence of DENV-IgG among participants was 25.77% in Kaohsiung and 11.40% in Tainan, and the seroprevalence was significantly higher in older age groups of both cities. Although the percentages of secondary DENV infection in Kaohsiung and Tainan were very similar (43.09% and 44.76%, respectively), DENV-1 and DENV-2 spanned a wider age range in Kaohsiung, whereas DENV-2 was dominant in Tainan. As very few studies have obtained the serostatus of DENV infection in older adults and the elderly, this study highlights the need for further investigation into antibody status, as well as the safety and efficacy of dengue vaccination in these older populations.

Abstract:
Past assessments of the carbon dioxide emissions attributable to buildings in Taiwan generally employed conversion formulas based on the floor area of legal buildings, and did not perform any quantitative assessments of illegal building space. As a consequence, this study builds on past research and places special emphasis on the effect of building violations. The study employed building violation data was derived from inspections performed by Tainan City Government from 2001 to 2007, a classification of illegal structure type, and environmental load analysis to derive the carbon dioxide emissions of four major types of building violations in Tainan City. It is found that reinforced concrete and light steel scaffolded concrete accounted for a combined share of 89% of all illegal structures in the city. In the floor area of illegal structures built each year in Tainan City accounts for roughly 5.6% of the floor area of authorized construction during the same year, but this quantity has been neglected in past assessments of building life cycle environmental load.

Abstract:
To address the increasing impact of global warming, Taiwan has devised a variety of activities to promote energy savings and carbon reduction. Although the city of Tainan was the first in Asia to enforce an anti-idling policy, the intersection between public value creation and local sustainable development has not yet been analyzed. Hence, this article explores the anti-idling policy in Tainan through the lens of social judgment theory (SJT). It also considers criteria related to the core values of environmental, economic, and social sustainability to understand the public values held by stakeholders in Tainan. The results of this article illustrate and dismantle the differences between several groups’ understanding of public value as it relates to local sustainable development, and suggest the establishment of intersectoral collaboration and community participation regarding value perception. Although the case is specific to Taiwan, its characteristics are typical of local sustainable development globally, especially in Asia.
