Abstract:
DNA binding with one finger (Dof) proteins are plant-specific transcription factors with crucial roles in plant growth and stress response. Even so, little is known about them in wheat. In this study, 108 wheat Dof (TaDof) genes across 21 chromosomes were detected. Although variable in sequence length, molecular weight, and isoelectric point, all TaDof proteins contained conserved zinc-finger structures and were phylogenetically divided into 7 sub-groups. Exon/intron and motif analyses suggested that TaDof structures and conserved motifs were similar within sub-groups but diverse among sub-groups. Many segmental duplications were identified and Ka/Ks and inter-species synthetic analyses indicated that polyploidization was main reason for increased number of TaDofs. Prediction and experimental confirmation revealed that TaDofs functioned as transcription factors in the nucleus. Expression pattern profiling showed that TaDofs specifically affected growth and development, and biotic and abiotic stress responses. Wheat miRNAs and cis-regulator were predicted as essential players in molding TaDofs expression patterns. qRT-PCR analysis revealed that TaDofs were induced by salt and drought stresses. Customized annotation revealed that TaDofs were widely involved in phytohormone response, defense, growth and development, and metabolism. Our study provided a comprehensive understanding to wheat TaDofs.

Abstract:
Although results obtained with the Tadoma method of speechreading have set a new standard for tactual speech communication, they are nevertheless inferior to those obtained in the normal auditory domain. Speech reception through Tadoma is comparable to that of normal-hearing subjects listening to speech under adverse conditions corresponding to a speech-to-noise ratio of roughly 0 dB. The goal of the current study was to demonstrate improvements to speech reception through Tadoma through the use of supplementary tactual information, thus leading to a new standard of performance in the tactual domain. Three supplementary tactual displays were investigated: (a) an articulatory-based display of tongue contact with the hard palate; (b) a multichannel display of the short-term speech spectrum; and (c) tactual reception of Cued Speech. The ability of laboratory-trained subjects to discriminate pairs of speech segments that are highly confused through Tadoma was studied for each of these augmental displays. Generally, discrimination tests were conducted for Tadoma alone, the supplementary display alone, and Tadoma combined with the supplementary tactual display. The results indicated that the tongue-palate contact display was an effective supplement to Tadoma for improving discrimination of consonants, but that neither the tongue-palate contact display nor the short-term spectral display was highly effective in improving vowel discriminability. For both vowel and consonant stimulus pairs, discriminability was nearly perfect for the tactual reception of the manual cues associated with Cued Speech. Further experiments on the identification of speech segments were conducted for Tadoma combined with Cued Speech. The observed data for both discrimination and identification experiments are compared with the predictions of models of integration of information from separate sources.

Abstract:
In the Tadoma method of communication, deaf-blind individuals receive speech by placing a hand on the face and neck of the talker and monitoring actions associated with speech production. Previous research has documented the speech perception, speech production, and linguistic abilities of highly experienced users of the Tadoma method. The current study was performed to gain further insight into the cues involved in the perception of speech segments through Tadoma. Small-set segmental identification experiments were conducted in which the subjects' access to various types of artieulatory information was systematically varied by imposing limitations on the contact of the hand with the face. Results obtained on 3 deaf-blind, highly experienced users of Tadoma were examined in terms of percent-correct scores, information transfer, and reception of speech features for each of sixteen experimental conditions. The results were generally consistent with expectations based on the speech cues assumed to be available in the various hand positions.

Abstract:
Abstract Summary Proteins with highly similar tandem domains have shown an increased propensity for misfolding and aggregation. Several molecular explanations have been put forward, such as swapping of adjacent domains, but there is a lack of computational tools to systematically analyze them. We present the TAndem DOmain Swap Stability predictor (TADOSS), a method to computationally estimate the stability of tandem domain-swapped conformations from the structures of single domains, based on previous coarse-grained simulation studies. The tool is able to discriminate domains susceptible to domain swapping and to identify structural regions with high propensity to form hinge loops. TADOSS is a scalable method and suitable for large scale analyses. Abstract:
This study reports on the linguistic abilities of 3 adult deaf-blind subjects. The subjects perceive spoken language through touch, placing a hand on the face of the speaker and monitoring the speaker's articulatory motions, a method of speechreading known as Tadoma. Two of the subjects, deaf-blind since infancy, acquired language and learned to speak through this tactile system; the third subject has used Tadoma since becoming deaf-blind at age 7. Linguistic knowledge and productive language are analyzed, using standardized tests and several tests constructed for this study. The subjects' language abilities prove to be extensive, comparing favorably in many areas with hearing individuals. The results illustrate a relatively minor effect of limited language exposure on eventual language achievement. The results also demonstrate the adequacy of the tactile sense, in these highly trained Tadoma users, for transmitting information about spoken language sufficient to support the development of language and learning to produce speech.

Abstract:

Abstract:
For outseder's "vaudou" is classed as sorcery in haiti or among black people ; it is often said that "vaudou" is from africa. Indeed, on the west african coast (benin, togo and ghana), only the eve, the fon and their brothers adza-tado say vodu (eve) or vodoun (fon). Vodu and not "vaudou". Because "vo" means invisible or unknown and "du" means world. Therefor, according to the popular etymology, vodu means the world of the invisible. In fact, the layman notices only the manifestations of vodu : rituals, animal sacrifice, statuelles etc. . . For the initiated, the world of vodu is composed of : mawu, the highest existence; fetome, mawu's thought or origin of all visible manifestations ; and agbegbome where mawu materializes his thought. Everything in the world representes the mawu's multiple manifestations, corresponding to the four elements : air, fire, water and earth, in their different forms. Everybody can choose his own way to apply to mawu. The material or the manifestation becomes a simple receptacle. For being accessible, mawu gives his word to humans : afa. Afa is

Cheng, Cong Rong. "Effect of high temperature shock during grain maturation on dormancy of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and analysis of TaDOG1." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/98165.

Full text
Abstract:
Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) is the germination of seed under wet environmental conditions whilst still on the mother plant prior to harvest. In wheat, PHS causes farmers substantial economic losses due to quality downgrading. A high level of dormancy is regarded as an important mechanism of resistance to PHS in cereal species, such as wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Many dormancy quantitative trait loci (QTL) have been identified and the corresponding genes that impart tolerance to PHS are actively being sought. Besides genetic factors, environmental conditions during grain maturation have been shown to have profound effects on dormancy. These environmental factors include temperature, light, drought and nutrients. This project aimed to determine the role of high temperature shock during wheat seed maturation on its dormancy at harvest-ripeness. The results of these experiments showed that seed of dormant or intermediate dormant wheat genotypes may have lower dormancy levels after experiencing a high temperature shock (5 days of 40°C). The highest sensitivity towards high temperature shock is limited to a short “window” of approximately five days starting around 25 dpa. The sensitivity increases and reaches a peak at 25 to 30 days post anthesis (dpa), causing an effective and quicker release of dormancy. The sensitivity later decreases and high temperature becomes less influential on dormancy. For the dormant genotype SUN325B, release from dormancy occurred 35 days earlier if treated with temperature shock. There was no significant correlation between the timing of the peak of sensitivity and factors such as daily temperatures before temperature shock, humidity or subsequent grain moisture losses. However, the stronger the intensity (40°C versus 35°C) and longer duration (5 days versus <5 days) of temperature shock seem to influence dormancy more significantly. Changes in embryonic and endospermic abscisic acid (ABA) concentration following temperature shock could not explain the change in dormancy levels in genotype SUN325B. Instead, the change in dormancy levels following the temperature shock could potentially be ascribed to the loss of ABA sensitivity. A comparison of the dormancy response to temperature shock of 23 genotypes that harbour different combinations of known dormancy QTL was performed. Strongly dormant genotypes, P07.683, 50213/Cunn798 and DM1073 #31, did not show an increased germination index at 65 dpa. Other genotypes, ranging from dormant to intermediate dormant phenotype under control conditions, i.e. displaying germination index less than 0.6 at 65 dpa, responded strongly to temperature shock. Dormancy levels significantly decreased, reflected by increases of germination index ranging from 0.4 to 0.9. It is highly likely that a temperature-shock-induced decrease in dormancy is a common response of these genotypes, and a higher number of combinations of QTL are required to resist dormancy changes. The identification of Delay of Germination 1 (DOG1) as the gene underlying a major dormancy QTL in Arabidopsis thaliana has led to stronger understanding of the mechanism of dormancy. Based on results of studies of the AtDOG1 and TaDOG1-like genes in Arabidopsis and cereal species respectively, and their functional conservation and responsiveness towards temperature changes during seed development, it seems likely that the TaDOG1-like genes in wheat might play a role in temperature shock-regulated dormancy levels. A search of publicly available bioinformatics databases revealed three expressed sequence tags (ESTs) with accession numbers AK336217, X56782 and D12921 that could be TaDOG1-like genes in wheat additional to the five previously reported by Ashikawa et al. (2010, 2014). Protein motif analysis showed that the orthologs of DOG1 possess combinations of protein motifs specific to each clade. Promoter analysis revealed RY repeats (CATGCAT) and (ACGTG)-core-containing ABA-responsive elements-like sequences in the promoters of these genes. Comparative mapping analysis also showed that one TaDOG1-like gene (accession: X56782, could reside in dormancy QTL regions in wheat and similarly, two rice putative orthologs (Os01g0159000 and Os05g0560200) reside in dormancy QTL regions in rice. In a reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis, no significant expression of two TaDOG1-like genes (accession: AB555729 and AK332921 or TaDOG1-L1 and TaDOG1-L2 respectively) were detected in either embryos or de-embryonated wheat grains of SUN325B at 45 and 60 dpa. However, both genes were detected to be expressed at 25 dpa and 30 dpa in the excised embryo tissues, signifying the mRNA to be short-lived. TaDOG1-L1 showed a non-significant increase following temperature shock, hence failed to explain the increase in germination index. TaDOG1-L2 was significantly down-regulated at 30 dpa following temperature shock, which could cause a lower protein accumulation towards 65 dpa. Further investigation could focus on the role of TaDOG1-L2 in dormancy in white wheat genotypes to better explain the effect of temperature shock during the sensitive “window” on dormancy in general.

Abstract:
Research into the effects of extensive reading (ER) in second language acquisition has surged over the past few decades. Many studies report several benefits that come from engaging in ER, including reading rate gains. However, these studies almost exclusively focus on English language learners and tend to be limited by their lack of control over how the ER treatment is conducted. Furthermore, experimental and quantitative studies that investigate the possible effects of ER on the reading skills of learners of Japanese have yet to be fully explored. The goal of this study was to investigate the possible effects of ER on the reading rate development of learners of Japanese as a foreign language. This study also aimed to examine the level of comprehension learners were able to maintain as their reading rates increased as well as the feasibility of a 12,000 character (7,200 standard word) per week reading goal. Finally, this study also surveyed learner perceptions of ER.

Using a quantitative single-case experiment design, eight intermediate-level learners of Japanese were monitored engaging in ER following strict adherence to ER principles over two and a half to four months. Longitudinal reading rate data as well as reading comprehension, ER, and survey data were collected over the course of the study. Results showed that participants’ reading rates increased significantly following the ER treatment. Furthermore, participants’ comprehension abilities were not hampered by an increase in their reading rates. Results also indicate that a weekly reading goal of 12,000 characters is likely feasible for intermediate-level learners. Finally, it was found that participants had overwhelmingly positive attitudes towards ER. This study provides evidence that ER has the potential to provide a highly enjoyable activity while substantially increasing learner reading rates without hindering comprehension.

Abstract:
The village of Tado in the north looms large in some local traditions. It was possibly the first general polity of the region (a theory supported by archaeological findings). What we think we know is that its ruler was a typical sacred king and the society a kinship-type one. But at some stage a group of people known as the Aja or Agasuvi had to flee towards the south. They founded Notsé and Allada. From Allada some groups moved to establish Dahomey in the north and, somewhat later, Porto Novo/Hogbonu in the east. The author argues that all the Ewe of the Western Slave Coast originated from Notsé – a contention modern anthropologists and historians are skeptical of – and that if there was migration, it must have involved few people and short distances. The chapter observes that there is a rival tradition to that of Tado, which underlines the importance of the kingdom of Grand Popo on the coast in the south.

Abstract:
