Cook, Harry Clayton. "Tactile Semantics : Browsing the Internet Blind." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen Designhögskolan, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-73352.

Abstract:
This research project is focused on understanding the current needs of blind users in the context of browsing on the internet. The research methods used have an inclusive design approach. The outcome was intended for both for the blind and normally sighted.  At the broadest level, this project is about reducing cognitive effort in human to computer interaction. At the next level it is about browsing the internet. Everyone using a computer and surfing the web at some point goes through the mental task of comparing between alternative choices. Examining today’s obstacles for the blind, what aspects of the experience could we improve? Could we design a better cognitive browsing experience for all users focusing on nonvisual aspects of the user experience? What would it look like, how would it behave and what characteristics would it carry?  The Semantic Scroller is a concept that could be implemented today but actually presupposes the use of some new HTML specifications specifically the adoption of “open” semantic tags. Unlike existing semantic tags like <nav> and <article> which are too context specific, an open framework would enable coders include contextual semantic descriptions where ever necessary.

Abstract:
Present-day and future network protocols that include and implement Forward Error Correction are configurable by internal parameters, typically incorporating expert knowledge to set up.We introduce a framework to systematically, objectively and efficiently determine parameters for Random Linear Network Codes (RLNC). Our approach uses an unbiased, consistent simulator in an optimization loop and utilizes a customizable, powerful and extendable parametric loss function. This allows to tailor existing protocols to various use cases, including ultra reliable, low latency communication (URLLC) codes. Successful configurations exploring the search space are under evolutionary pressure and written into a database for instant retrieval. We demonstrate three examples, Full Vector Coding, tail RLNC, and PACE with different focus for each.

Abstract:
With the introduction of the Tactile Internet, the vision of democratising the access to skills and expertise for everyone is closer to realisation than ever before. Enabling humans to interact with cooperative product-service systems through technologies such as wearables, exo-skeletons or other IoT devices inhibits a potential of disruptive innovations to significantly change our everyday lives. Therefore, in order to create out of this technological advantages meaningful applications for society in general a shift in academic research is required away from purely technology-oriented to socio-economic solutions (Mazzucato, 2018).

Abstract:
In modern society, use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is critical in order to avoid exclusion from many common modern day activities. Furthermore, longer life expectancy presents a major challenge to support dependent seniors, or those at risk of losing their independence but wish to continue living in their own home. ICTs seem particularly relevant in this context. Indeed, they promote social engagement, facilitate access to social networks, and provide a gateway to a wide range of information. Of particular interest in the present study are landline or mobile phones, and tablet computers, which are more readily portable, offer simpler functionality than most computers, and therefore are potentially very useful for aging people, included people with neurocognitive disorders. Broadly, such ICTs help to maintain and improve autonomy. Despite these potential benefits, seniors do not commonly use ICTs. Age-related physical and cognitive decline may affect the ability of older people to use ICTs. Therefore, it is essential to promote education and learning. However, an adapted and effective support could not exist without a fine evaluation of the nature of the difficulties and of the efficient cues. Consequently, we wanted to study the particular difficulties of older people in using these technologies, but also the conditions of the assistance they can benefit from. The objectif of this thesis project was to determine whether elderly encountered specific difficulties in using new ICT, in order to offert them an adapted support. A performance-based assessment and a comparison of the capacity of ICT ise of young and old adults has shown that older adults are characterized by a greater number of commission errors and a need for more precise and explicit cues, especially for the use of mobile technologies. Exploring the link between the nature of errors produced in the use of ICTs and cognitive skills indicated the determinent factor of inhibition abilities as well as episodic memory, in particular the spontaneous recovery process. These abilities were related to commission errors and not to omissions. Structuring the informative environment and automation of some basic procedures essential to the use of ICTs therefore appear as a very probable orientation to alleviate the difficulties of the elderly. Finally, participation in a tablet computer training program using the errorless learning and spaced-retrieval techniques, allowed to improve attitudes towards technologies as well as the performance when they are used

Abstract:
The work aims at investigating innovative solutions for tactile display technologies, rendering both thermal and tactile sensations. Main achievements consist in devising thermal touch rendering prototype, based on TEM modules controlled by an accurate finite-difference simulation, and improving new actuators based on electroactive polymers, in order to make them suitable for tactile rendering. For thermal rendering, efficiency depends mainly on the accuracy of the thermal flows that must be reproduced. An accurate semi-analytical model of thermal flow between finger and materials was done, mixing both analytical and numerical simulation, to solve the problem of discontinuity of initial contact temperatures. It was validated and implemented in a multimodal rendering device in a virtual reality environment. For tactile rendering, efficiency depends mainly on the actuators, that must be small, soft. Polymer actuators based on new Interpenetrated Networks of Conductive Polymers were used. Several major improvements of former existing systems were needed Fabrication improvements: Ultra-fast polymerization with microwaves enabled a better reproducibility and a reliable fabrication process; it allowed also using of special masks to build various shaped integrated actuators. Design improvements: New actuator shapes, mixing rigid conductive electroactive parts and soft inert parts, were designed, leading to more efficient linear rather than bending deformations. A mechanical simulation tool enabled optimization. Other improvements include chemical interconnecting of the actuators in an all-in-one matrix, and increasing of the actuator speed and miniaturization

James, Rina Lynne. "The Efficacy of Virtual Protest: Linking Digital Tactics to Outcomes in Activist Campaigns." PDXScholar, 2017. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4008.

Abstract:
Activists are increasingly relying on online tactics and digital tools to address social issues. This shift towards reliance on the Internet has been shown to have salient implications for social movement formation processes; however, the effectiveness of such actions for achieving specific goals remains largely unaddressed. This study explores how the types of Internet activism and digital tools used by activism campaigns relate to success in meeting stated goals. To address these questions, the study builds on an existing framework that distinguishes between four distinct types of Internet activism: brochure-ware, which is oriented towards information distribution; e-mobilizations, which treats digital media merely as a tool for mobilizing individuals offline; online participation, which is characterized by wholly online actions such as e-petitions or virtual protests; and online organizing, where organization of a movement takes place exclusively via the internet with no face-to-face coordination by organizers. Ordinal regression models were conducted utilizing cross-sectional data from the Global Digital Activism Data Set (GDADS), a compilation of information on 426 activism campaigns from around the world that began between 2010 and 2012; additional data regarding the types of Internet activism used was also appended to the GDADS using source materials provided within the data set. The findings suggest that use of the Internet for mobilizing offline actions is negatively associated with campaign success, but that this does not hold true for protest actions organized without use of digital tools. E-petition use was also found to be negatively related to achievement of campaign goals.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the kinds of verbal and nonverbal signals elites manifest to show leadership qualities. Launching from Max Weber's conceptual framework of charisma as a power term and Harold Lasswell's study of propaganda, this study takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying political leadership with elements of communication methodology and an ontological basis in evolutionary psychology. The study's goal is to offer a framework for defining and evaluating the diverse signal patterns employed by political elites in three real-life situations. These are the Malta Summit, the 1992 Virginia Presidential Debate, and the 2012 South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary. The cases were chosen because they display a diverse set of signal variations during different types of interactions. The three case studies are evaluated by measuring frequency and patterns of occurrence of the five different interaction constructs (indicator of interest, indicator of disinterest, demonstration of high value, demonstration of low value, and compliance testing) to explain different interaction patterns. A simple frequency distribution of the different signals during a given interaction is used to display the empirical findings and to compare patterns across the case studies. This study reveals that the presence of DLV (demonstration of low value) signals weaken an elite's position in relation to other elites and the public while the presence of DHV (demonstration of high value) signals strengthen an elite's position. It is largely the presence, absence, and frequency of these two signals that determines who conveys leadership qualities effectively regardless of leadership style. Studying the signaling patterns of political elites would allow scholars to understand better the kinds of signal patterns and signal frequencies that are used in different types of leadership styles and norm ranges for signals including for political elites belonging to different cultures and subcultures.

Grundell, Vendela. "Flow and Friction : On the Tactical Potential of Interfacing with Glitch Art."

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze how interfacing affects viewer experiences and viewer positions, and how glitch art online makes that effect visible. Glitch art is concerned with disruptions in the systems that govern how for instance photography is produced, circulated and displayed in a digital image flow. The system’s usually undisrupted operation emerges through the friction created between the key components of the study: the viewer, the photo-based mediation, and the interface where the two meet. These components are encircled by the relation between individual and system, whose increased integration with one another requires a sharper eye: a tactical spectatorship in response to how the interface of the image flow can turn the individual into a part of the system. The unfolding of such a spectatorship is investigated through three questions: What can a viewer see and do by interfacing with the website, and with what means? How is the photo-based material on the website produced, displayed and conceptualized? How does the website and its photo-based material – glitched and not glitched – position the viewer haptically and epistemologically? With a cross disciplinary approach, three media phenomenological case studies present glitch artworks in an online environment. The case study on Phillip Stearns’s project Year of the Glitch concerns the website’s index and archive pages as well as still images with a focus on camera reconstruction, verbal conceptualization, and image materiality. The case study on Rosa Menkman’s website Sunshine in My Throat includes index and artwork pages, two artworks with still and moving images as well as a thematization of the entire online environment being glitched. The case study on Evan Meaney’s project Ceibas Cycle focuses on the index page and an interface-based artwork, two video works as well as a portfolio of photographs that are not glitched. The timeliness of the case study materials – created between 2004 and 2012 – is anchored in systems aesthetics, in which technical problems are explored as a cultural critique since the 1960s. The qualitative analysis both emphasizes and problematizes experience, as a complement to quantitative studies about images in relation to a digital flow. The study analyzes how glitch art shapes experiences both by following the interface and by disrupting it. The effect of the underlying system thus appears in a material that has not yet been given an in-depth art historical analysis with a particular focus on the individual viewer. With such a focus, glitch is conceptualized as systemic friction in this study, which clarifies how the artworks online produce knowledge about the interface by providing the individual with a possibility of creating tactical breaks into the image flow. The results of the study consist of the ways of seeing that develop such a possibility – and they gain relevance as they make visible how the flow usually operates in invisible ways. These results point out that the experience of the artworks – and by extension, other experiences of images online – can alert viewers to their own activity within the image flow. If the system sets boundaries for experiences of and through the interface, a tactical spectatorship becomes possible when a glitch gives the individual an opportunity to try different positions towards these boundaries.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to study the teacher assistants initial period in the pilot project of municipality of Uppsala. Based on resources theory as a theoretical framework two research questions were asked; 1) In what way have internal and external resources contributed to the socialization process of teacher assistants? and 2) What consequences does the pilot project have on the teacher assistants socialization process? Semistructured interviews were used to ask eight teacher assistants employed in the pilot project about how they experienced the first time in the new workplace and what resources were important for their socialization. The result shows that the initial period of the employment was cautious and tentative, which was described as both positive and negative in terms of a soft start or a tardy start. On one hand the soft start promotes relationship development, but on the other hand the tardy start inhibits adaptation to work. The negative side shows how important it is that work tools are ready to be used when the new employee is introduced to the new work, otherwise it can create negative experiences. The results also show that the pilot project was characterized by a reciprocity where nobody really knew what the teacher assistant role would contain, and thus it became a new situation for all parties to relate to. Through these themes, the overall results shows that the pilot project from a socialization perspective was characterized by a double socialization.

Abstract:
Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) is a significant feature of the contemporary world and it is a particular challenge to the armed forces of many states which are involved is such conflict, or are likely to become so. This thesis is not concerned with how such difficult conflict situations arise. Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and military principles applicable to the prevention and resolution of LIC. The principles of this thesis are based in numerous historical examples of LIC and six in depth case studies. These distilled principles are analysed in two central chapters, and are then applied in two latter defence force chapters so as to ensure there practicality and resilience. Numerous defence academics and military practitioners have been consulted in the production of this thesis; their contribution has further reinforced the functionality of the principles examined in this research. The research illustrates the criticality of a holistic approach to LIC. The function of this approach is to guarantee the stability of the sovereign state, by unifying civil, police, intelligence and military services. The effectiveness of the military elements must also be ensured, as military force is central to the suppression of LIC. Consequently, the research makes strategic and operational prescriptions, so as to improve the capability of defence forces that are concerned with preventing or resolving LIC.

actile Internet will be one of the major application of the near future 5G cellular systems. In healthcare, medical diagnosis is still largely confined to the location of the physician, but in the world of the Tactile Internet it will be available anywhere and at any time. The physician will be able to command a tele-robot at the patient’s location, allowing remote physical examination with full image and haptic feedback. On this condition, tele-surgery is becoming possible, above all an experienced surgeon can provide an accurate medical diagnosis and perform surgery on a patient on the other side of the world. However, tele-surgery is confronted with opportunity and challenge. It's a serious issue, how to provide confidentiality, integrity and availability in the process of communication. Therefore, tele-surgery must have a strong key agreement protocol.

Polachan, Kurian. "Tactile Cyber-Physical Systems: A Testbed, A Performance Metric and Network Resource Allocation Protocols." Thesis, 2021. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/5087.

Full text
Abstract:
Tactile Cyber-Physical Systems (TCPS) use haptic, audio and video modalities to facilitate humans to perform real-time physical interaction of remote objects over ultra-low latency and ultra-reliable networks referred to as the Tactile Internet. TCPS has applications in automation, education, entertainment, gaming, healthcare, and industrial transportation. TCPS requires ultra-low latency of a few milliseconds and ultra-reliability of 99.99999% to prevent control-loop instabilities and operator-side cybersickness. The thesis focuses on design and development of a testbed, a performance metric and network resource allocation protocols for TCPS. We first design and develop TCPSbed, a modular testbed for TCPS. TCPSbed facilitates integrating different components, both real and simulated, to realize different TCPS applications and evaluate their latency and stability. TCPSbed supports edge intelligence modules that predict command and feedback signals at the operator and teleoperator ends, allowing TCPS applications to perform well in adverse network conditions. Our second work deals with design of an evaluation method and a metric, called QoC, to characterize TCPS. For characterization, we adopt step response analysis, a well-known control-theoretic method. The adoption entails replacing the TCPS operator with a controller with known characteristics and analyzing its response to slave-side step disturbance. From the step response curves, we derive QoC, which captures the characteristics of both networking and non-networking components in a TCPS. We then focus on network slicing protocols for TCPS. In TCPS, the requirement of network resources, such as latency and bandwidth, varies over time. We propose a mechanism to dynamically create, destroy and switch network slices on a per flow basis depending on instantaneous resource requirements of the flows. Our solution consists of two main components: (a) a clustering algorithm to determine the slices and their specifications to support TCPS flows (b) on-the-fly provisioning and switching of these slices using Software-Defined Networking and P4-programmable switches. We finally develop decentralized dynamic switch configuration protocols for IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networks (TSN) to support TCPS. Unlike traditional best-effort networks, TSN can guarantee low packet latencies, jitter, and loss for time-critical flows by isolating them from external traffic. Our protocols supports plug-and-play operation of TCPS terminals with guaranteed minimal packet latencies in the presence of external traffic. We develop PYTSN, an open-source discrete-event network simulator containing models of TSN network components to evaluate the proposed protocols.

Boucher, Guy. "Les effets de dialogue interne sur le processus de décision chez les jeunes joueurs élites de hockey sur glace." Thèse, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/11734.

Full text
Abstract:
Self-talk (S-T) is a mental skill which is used more and more by elite athletes but there is a lack of research on its effect in team sports. Its impact deserves to be evaluated as much during team contexts and real competitions as it does in individual sports because self-talk can affect a team sport athlete's ability to perform mental skills such as good tactical decision-making and focusing on the proper stimuli. Therefore, with the participation of 10 elite hockey players varying from 16 to 20 years old, this study examines the effect of two distinct self-talk treatments, a motivational one and an instructional one. The analysis, evaluating the efficiency of the subjects' ability to accomplish collective tactics (effect on decision process) during the regular season games, has shown that all athletes showed some improvement in their performances. Generally, the group associated with the instructional self-talk treatment has proven to be considerably more effective in decision-making than the motivational group. However, the athletes from the motivational self-talk group generated better results than expected. It seems also that, in the short term, the instructional self-talk treatment was more difficult to assimilate than the motivational one but its positive impact appears to have lasted longer. Furthermore, the more experienced players did not display a better progression in their decision process compared to the less experienced ones. Also, motivational self-talk appears to have produced better effects than the instructional one when used during periods of fatigue and stress.

Gooden-Sanderson, Kerri-Ann. "The internal audit function as an auditor persuasion tactic." 2014. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/accountancy_diss/15.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines how reliance on the client’s internal audit function (IAF) affects auditors’ ability to persuade management to accept material weakness assessments of detected internal control deficiencies. I further investigate whether auditors’ ability to persuade management to accept material weakness assessments depends on the subjectivity the control deficiency assessment to varied interpretations (ambiguity). I apply group affiliation and persuasion theories to hypothesize that management will have higher group identification with the IAF than with the auditors. I predict that management’s group affiliation will lead them to be more accepting of auditors’ internal control assessments when the auditors rely on the client’s IAF than when auditors do not. Further, I hypothesize that the greater the ambiguity in the internal control deficiency assessment, the more persuaded management will be to accept the auditors’ control assessment in situations where the auditors rely on the IAF than when the auditors do not. I conduct an experiment using a 2 X 2 between-subjects design in which I manipulate auditors’ reliance on the client’s IAF during tests of the client’s internal controls (rely or not rely) and the level of ambiguity in the internal control deficiency assessment (less ambiguous or more ambiguous) in a SOX 404 Internal Controls Over Financial Reporting (ICFR) audit setting. The study’s findings provide evidence that relying on the client’s IAF can improve auditors’ likelihood of persuading the client when control assessments are more open to varied interpretations. This study sheds light on a previously ignored benefit of using the client’s IAF – as a persuasion tactic. Thus, my research contributes to two literature streams: factors influencing auditor-client negotiations and the effects of using the IAF on audit engagements. These results provide both practical and theoretical insights to academics, practitioners and auditing standard setters.

Accurate intercept point prediction is heavily needed for an anti-tactical ballistic missile system in order to increase the single shot kill probability. It leads to the requirement of the fast and accurate on-line trajectory prediction for an reentry vehicle. Extended Kalman filter, adaptive Kalman filter, and a-b filter are common used trajectory prediction methods. In this thesis, we develop and evaluate algorithms for intercept point prediction based on these three filters associating a simplified air defense missile model. According to the simulation results, we conclude that the algorithm based on adaptive Kalman filter is an acceptable method and worthy of further applications.

Yazir, Yağız Onat. "On the virtues and liabilities of ConfiDNS : can simple tactics overcome deep insecurities?" Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2211.

Full text
Abstract:
The Domain Name System (DNS) is perhaps one of the most widely used infrastructural software entities in the world. Built in a distributed manner. DNS can be simply explained as a mapping tool between human readable addresses and physical addresses. Ultimately. it acts much like a phone book. providing a means of associating a high-level understanding with a low-level representation. However, the primary goal that motivated the design and implementation of such a mapping device was solely performance. The creators of DNS mainly focused on getting technical details right, leaving gaps for today's security and availability threats which were nonexistent at that time. As a result. DNS provides an insecure and unreliable mapping mechanism in today's environment that neither performs any checks on the origin of data, nor provides a solution better then simple replication in the face of benign or malicious server failures. After the emergence of threats like man-in-the-middle attacks, distributed denial of service attacks, and server overloads, alarms have been sounding in the systems community for a renovation of DNS. This need has given birth to several proposals to improve the security and availability in DNS. DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC). Scalable Byzantine Fault Tolerant Secure DNS (SBFTSDNS), Cooperative DNS (CoDoNS), and Cooperative DNS Lookup System (CoDNS) are some of the most important steps taken to fix the current problems in DNS. This thesis overviews these proposals for renovation in addition to a recent proposal based on cooperation between domain name servers, called ConfiDNS [1]. ConfiDNS does not dictate any change to the current setting of DNS; instead it intercepts name resolution activity between a client and a domain name server, and performs multiple simultaneous name lookup queries to multiple name servers in order to produce results (Internet Protocol Addresses) that are agreed upon by a pool of name servers. Further, the agreed results are stored for a history mechanism to operate on, in order to create direct paths to the source of content, and bypass problematic name servers during server failures. The key to availability on the client-side of DNS is the cooperative approach. which extends the classic primary-secondary replication scheme to a pool of name servers. The primary statistics on the collected domain name resolution data show that for approximately 95% of the domain names this idea is applicable, while for the rest, which are mostly domain names served by content distribution networks, is not realistic due to the number and frequent variation of physical addresses

ABSTRACT This study intends to investigate effective tactics of mitigating the degree of violence of flaming in Internet. The samples of the study are 50 flaming occurred in on-line Bulletin Board System. The samples contain 1469 pieces of writing, and researcher observed the processes of flaming to sift out 194 buffers that decreased the degree of violence of flaming in Internet. By way of above procedures to understand the conditions of flaming in internet, to compare the influences on the degree of violence of flaming with different conflict tactics, to ascertain the influences on the degree of violence of flaming with different moments. The manner of this study is Content Analysis. The conditions of flaming contain four parts that are "the length of flaming", "the continuing time of flaming", "the degree of violence of flaming", "the ratios of buffer ", and analyze the correlations among them. The research reports that "the length of flaming" and "the continuing time of flaming" are significantly positive correlation; "the length of flaming" and "the ratios of buffer " are also the positive affect. In the aspects of conflict tactics of buffers, the categories of conflict tactics in "avoid " has the best effect to mitigate flaming; the better items of conflict tactics are "to transfer topical subjects ", "to narrate or explain ", " to express one’s opinions ", and " to oppose the others "; in the aspects of opportune moments of buffers are from flaming level four to flaming level six. In the interaction of the conflict tactics and opportune moments in buffers: No matter what conflict tactics are not applicable to flaming level three, especially of " to narrate or explain ", "to impute responsibility to themselves", and "to make a concession and apologize". In flaming level four suits with "integrative", and " to narrate or explain ", "to transfer topical subjects ", and "to admonish the others". In flaming level five, "avoid", and "integrative" are better than "distributive ", such as " to deny directly ", "to transfer topical subjects ", " to express one’s opinions ", "to understand and be interested in sth. ", and "to integrate". In flaming level six, all the conflict tactics are suited, particularly in "to blur the focuses", " to narrate or explain ", " to transfer topical subjects ", " to express one’s opinions ", " to understand and be interested in sth.", and " to oppose the others ". The contributions of the research provide some conditions of flaming in Internet for educational workers. There are appropriate conflict tactics and opportune moments in buffers to mitigate flaming. To be regarded as the references for educational workers to have the standard of Internet among the school.

Abstract:
Internal communication is essential for every company. However it is not always perceived as such. Internal communication is a conveyor of information and company's values. It is based on corporate culture and it also influences in. It affects atmosphere and performance of the company, engagement and overall happiness of employees. It is also related to the rate of their fluctuation. Diversity, which is the key to the diversity of approaches and perspectives, is also comparatively important to the functioning of the company. Diversity brings more effective problem solving or team functioning. In this respect, companies should strive for gender equality in their working environment and take supportive initiatives to help women overcome barriers in the labor market. The Czech Republic is one of the worst-ranked countries in the European Union in terms of gender equality in the labor market. This diploma thesis deals with the interconnection of internal communication and topics related to promoting women in work and personal life. The aim of this thesis is to use qualitative research to find out how selected domestic companies work with these topics in internal communication.
