Abstract:
Successful machine learning (ML) needs to learn from good data. However, one common issue about train data for ML practitioners is the lack of good features. To mitigate this problem, feature augmentation is often employed by joining with (or enriching features from) multiple tables, so as to become feature-rich ML. A consequent problem is that the enriched train data may contain too many tuples, especially if the feature augmentation is obtained through 1 (or many)-to-many or fuzzy joins. Training an ML model with a very large train dataset is data-inefficient. Coreset is often used to achieve data-efficient ML training, which selects a small subset of train data that can theoretically and practically perform similarly as using the full dataset. However, coreset selection over a large train dataset is also known to be time-consuming. In this paper, we aim at achieving both feature-rich ML through feature augmentation and data-efficient ML through coreset selection. In order to avoid time-consuming coreset selection over a feature augmented (or fully materialized) table, we propose to efficiently select the coreset without materializing the augmented table. Note that coreset selection typically uses weighted gradients of the subset to approximate the full gradient of the entire train dataset. Our key idea is that the gradient computation for coreset selection of the augmented table can be pushed down to partial feature similarity of tuples within each individual table, without join materialization. These partial feature similarity values can be aggregated to estimate the gradient of the augmented table, which is upper bounded with provable theoretical guarantees. Extensive experiments show that our method can improve the efficiency by nearly 2 orders of magnitudes, while keeping almost the same accuracy as training with the fully augmented train data.

Abstract:
Web tables are essential for applications such as data analysis. However, web tables are often incomplete and short of some critical information, which makes it challenging to understand the web table content. Automatically predicting column types for tables without metadata is significant for dealing with various tables from the Internet. This paper proposes a CNN-Text method to deal with this task, which fuses CNN prediction and voting processes. We present data augmentation and synthetic column generation approaches to improve the CNN’s performance and use extracted text to get better predictions. The experimental result shows that CNN-Text outperforms the baseline methods, demonstrating that CNN-Text is well qualified for the table column type prediction.

People with vision loss often face limitations in regular sports games with standard rules and equipment. For example, in current blind table tennis, conventional rules are modified so that the ball rolls along the table instead of bouncing. In this work, we propose an auditory sensory augmentation system to support traditional table tennis in three dimensions. We capture the trajectory of the table tennis ball using two neuromorphic event cameras and sonify the path of the ball using loudspeakers mounted near the left and right edges of the playing table. The two event cameras capture rapid changes in brightness allowing fast and precise ball tracking. The ball's 3D trajectory is then sonified using four lines of loudspeakers mounted at two different heights near the left and right edges of the playing table. We present a preliminary implementation and investigation of the proposed sensory augmentation system with a focus on the technical and perceptual challenges.

Abstract:
Data augmentation is an approach for several text generation tasks. Generally, in the machine translation paradigm, mainly in low-resource language scenarios, many data augmentation methods have been proposed. The most used approaches for generating pseudo data mainly lay in word omission, random sampling, or replacing some words in the text. However, previous methods barely guarantee the quality of augmented data. In this work, we try to build the data by using paraphrase embedding and POS-Tagging. Namely, we generate the fake monolingual corpus by replacing the main four POS-Tagging labels, such as noun, adjective, adverb, and verb, based on both the paraphrase table and their similarity. We select the bigger corpus size of the paraphrase table with word level and obtain the word embedding of each word in the table, then calculate the cosine similarity between these words and tagged words in the original sequence. In addition, we exploit the ranking algorithm to choose highly similar words to reduce semantic errors and leverage the POS-Tagging replacement to mitigate syntactic error to some extent. Experimental results show that our augmentation method consistently outperforms all previous SOTA methods on the low-resource language pairs in seven language pairs from four corpora by 1.16 to 2.39 BLEU points.

Category: Sports; Arthroscopy Introduction/Purpose: Though several arthroscopic surgical techniques for the treatment of lateral instability of the ankle have been introduced recently; the effect for the inferior extensor retinaculum augmentation is remained unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes after arthroscopic anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) repair with or without additional retinaculum augmentation. Methods: We performed a retrospective review between 2017 and 2018 of 61 consecutive patients who underwent arthroscopic ATFL repair surgery for chronic ankle lateral instability. The exclusion criteria were previous surgery on affected ankle and combined medial ligament instability. Demographic data were evaluated including age, gender, smoking, Body mass index, generalized hyperlaxity and concomitant lesions. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether retinaculum repair or not. Clinical results were analysed to compare groups A and R preoperatively and at minimum follow-up of 1 years by using the Visual Analogue Scale, American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, Foot and Ankle Outcome score (FAOS), and Karlsson Ankle Functional Score. Radiologic outcome evaluations were performed preoperatively and at 2 year postoperatively at final follow-up using anterior talar translation, and talar tilt angle. Results: A total of 62 patients were included in this study. Patients were divided into two groups: group A consisted of 29 patients who underwent only arthroscopic ATFL repair and group R consisted of 32 patients who underwent arthroscopic ATFL repair and additional retinaculum augmentation. There was no difference statistically between two group in demographics (Table 1). All clinical scores were improved after surgery in both groups. (P<0.001) There were no differences were found in VAS, AOFAS score, total FAOS and Karlsson score between two groups. However, sports activity unit in FAOS, there were significant differences between group A (71.4 +- 8.1) and group R (83.4 +- 8.6) (Table 2). (p=0.032) Radiographic data also showed no differences (Table 3). Conclusion: Arthroscopic ATFL repair achieved improved outcomes postoperatively with or without retinaculum augmentation. However, among physically active patients with chronic ankle lateral instability, arthroscopic ATFL repair with retinaculum augmentation results in better sports activity unit in FAOS as compare with arthroscopic ATFL repair alone.

Objectives: Surgical options for shoulder instability in collision athletes remain controversial. Although arthroscopic soft tissue stabilization is widely accepted treatment for shoulder instability, many surgeons prefer coracoid transfer for collision athletes with or without glenoid defect due to potential high recurrence rate after arthroscopic soft tissue Bankart repair (ABR). In the meantime, Hill-Sacks remplissage (HSR) has been gaining popularity as an effective arthroscopic augmentation procedure. Since 2002, we performed rotator interval closure (RIC) as an augmentation in addition to ABR or arthroscopic bony Bankart repair (ABBR) for collision athletes and obtained satisfactory outcome. However, teen players demonstrated higher recurrence rate compared to twenties and thirties. Therefore, from 2012, we performed HSR as an additional augmentation for teen players besides ABR/ABBR and RIC. The purpose of this study was to assess the outcomes after arthroscopic stabilization in collision athletes who underwent shoulder stabilization under our treatment strategy. Methods: Between 2012 through 2015, 95 consecutive collision athletes underwent shoulder stabilization. Among those, only 2 patients (2%) underwent arthroscopic bony procedure for poor capsular integrity. Among the remaining 93 patients who underwent soft tissue stabilization, 65 were available for minimum 2 year follow-up (70%). Therefore, subjects consisted of 65 players including 54 rugby and 11 American football players (Table 1). There were 13 national top league, 24 collegeate, 21 junior or senior high school, and 7 recreational players. The mean age at surgery was 20 years (range, 16-36). The mean follow-up was 37 months (range, 24-64). We retrospectively reviewed intraoperative findings and surgical procedures using patient records including surgical reports and videos. We also investigated the mean time for sports return, functional outcome and recurrence rate. Pre- and postoperative Rowe scores were compared using paired t test. Results: Preoperative 3DCT of the glenoid demonstrated bony Bankart (fragment type) in 43 players (66%), attritional type in 16 (25%), and normal glenoid in 6 (9%). Mean glenoid bone loss was 15% (range, 0-25) and all of the glenoid with more than 10% bone loss retained bony fragment (Table 2). All 65 players demonstrated Bankart lesion and 15 had concomitant SLAP lesion (23%) which required repair. In addition, 5 players demonstrated capsule tear (8%), which were also repaired. Twenty four players (36%) underwent ABR or ABBR with RIC and forty one players (64%) underwent ABR or ABBR combined with HSR (Table 1).The mean time for sports return was 7 months (range, 4-13) after surgery. The mean Rowe score significantly improved after surgery from 65 (range, 55-75) to 92 (range, 65-100) (P < .001). Recurrence appeared in 2 cases (3%), both of which were junior or senior high school players who underwent ABR with HSR. Conclusion: Soft tissue stabilization combined with selective augmentation procedures for shoulder instability in collision athletes demonstrated satisfactory outcomes with low recurrence rate. Since the incidence of having bony Bankart lesion in collision athletes was very high, arthroscopic bony Bankart repair worked in many patients even with significant glenoid bone loss. The objective was to select insects with superior attributes for augmentative release against lepidopteran pests in horticultural crops. Both temperature and humidity affected developmental time and life table parameters of the parasitoids but temperature played a more critical role. Developmental time was inversely related to temperature. The intrinsic and finite rates of increase increased with temperature up to 30°C. Both net reproduction rate and intrinsic rate of increase were higher at the lower humidity. Temperature inversely affected generation time of parasitoid strains regardless of the relative humidity. Two strains ofTrichogrammasp. nr.mwanzaicollected from both low and medium altitudes andTrichogrammatoideasp. nr.luteafrom the mid-altitudes, were better adapted to both low and high temperatures than the other strains, as indicated by the high intrinsic and net reproductive rates, at both humidity levels. These three strains appear to be promising candidates for augmentation biocontrol against the African bollwormHelicoverpa armigerain Kenya.

Much energy is dissipated when large equipment moves slowly. Generally, equipment scheduling at construction site is supposed to minimize equipment slowdown and deadhead moving. Table methods are always adopted to optimize transfer sequence, but the feasible solution is well disappointing. For the acceptable solution relevant to task points in construction equipment scheduling, transfer table is divided into four regions. After proper augmentation and deflation, the acceptable solution evolves into global coordinating solution of construction scheduling, which contributes to minimizing slowdown and deadhead mileages. This method has been verified in practical engineering and is a significant reference on decision making of construction equipment scheduling.

Spreadsheets compose a valuable and notably large dataset of documents within many enterprise organizations and on the Web. Although spreadsheets are intuitive to use and equipped with powerful functionalities, extraction and transformation of the data remain a cumbersome and mostly manual task. The great flexibility they provide to the user results in data that is arbitrarily structured and hard to process for other applications. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture that combines supervised layout inference and multimodal candidate classification to allow knowledge base augmentation from arbitrary spreadsheets. In our design, we consider the need for repairing misclassifications and allow for verification and ranking of ambiguous candidates. We evaluate the performance of our system on two datasets, one with single-table spreadsheets, another with spreadsheets of arbitrary format. The evaluation result shows that the proposed system achieves similar performance on single-table spreadsheets compared to state-of-the-art rule-based solutions. Additionally, the flexibility of the system allows us to process arbitrary spreadsheet formats, including horizontally and vertically aligned tables, multiple worksheets, and contextualizing metadata. This was not possible with existing purely text-based or table-based solutions. The experiments demonstrate that it can achieve high effectiveness with an F1 score of 95.71 on arbitrary spreadsheets that require the interpretation of surrounding metadata. The precision of the system can be further increased by applying candidate schema-matching based on semantic similarity of column headers.
Kalkylblad består av ett värdefullt och särskilt stort datasätt av dokument inom många företagsorganisationer och på webben. Även om kalkylblad är intuitivt att använda och är utrustad med kraftfulla funktioner, utvinning och transformation av data är fortfarande en besvärlig och manuell uppgift. Den stora flexibiliteten som de ger användaren resulterar i data som är godtyckligt strukturerade och svåra att bearbeta för andra applikationer. I det här förslaget föreslår vi en ny arkitektur som kombinerar övervakad layoutinferens och multimodal kandidatklassificering för att tillåta kunskapsbasförstärkning från godtyckliga kalkylblad. I vår design överväger vi behovet av att reparera felklassificeringar och möjliggöra verifiering och rangordning av tvetydiga kandidater. Vi utvärderar systemets utförande på två datasätt, en med singeltabellkalkylblad, en annan med kalkylblad av godtyckligt format. Utvärderingsresultatet visar att det föreslagna systemet uppnår liknande prestanda på singel-tabellkalkylblad jämfört med state-of-the-art regelbaserade lösningar. Dessutom tillåter systemets flexibilitet oss att bearbeta godtyckliga kalkylark format, inklusive horisontella och vertikala inriktade tabeller, flera kalkylblad och sammanhangsförande metadata. Detta var inte möjligt med existerande rent textbaserade eller tabellbaserade lösningar. Augmented-reality technologies as a new way of human-computer interaction make possible real-time modification of our perception of reality without active user interference. This article introduces the prototype of an augmented-reality shopping-assistant device, the PromoPad, based on a handheld tablet PC allowing see-through vision with augmentations. While this new interaction utilizing augmented reality that places products into contextual settings can enhance shopping experience and suggest complementary products, it also has challenges and issues when used in a public environment such as a store setting. This article discusses the design and implementation of the PromoPad, and addresses the issues and possible solutions. The concept of dynamic contextualization is further investigated in this setting with a list of possible context modifications and their relation to advertising and the psychology of consumer purchasing.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) implementation at any level is a multifaceted process that requires selection of relevant and appropriate systems to suit individual users who may have complex communication needs and other co-occurring difficulties. Careful and systematic action may be required to develop skills and abilities in the use of chosen technologies with suitable ongoing support within a wide range of settings. The wider milieu in which services are provided must also be considered in order to provide a firm foundation for capacity building alongside considerations for multilingual and multicultural factors. UNICEF with the Global Symbols team supported by local professionals working with AAC users, their families and carers set out to collaboratively provide an implementation guide based on their experiences in several Eastern European countries. The aim of the guide was to illustrate work already being undertaken in the area and to ensure the sharing of knowledge and resources where gaps were discovered. The result became a series of linked webpages in an online framework that covered practical aspects for the development of policies and procedures to support early intervention for those with severe speech, language and communication needs across countries of differing cultures and languages. The actual AAC implementation required ingenuity on all sides with translations for pictographic symbol and software adaptations with Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, new synthetic voices alongside deployment and capacity development. Considerable local support was forthcoming and captured with interviews by those working with AAC users as technology was introduced and outcomes measured. As the guide was completed several videos were shared publicly by carers with examples of AAC and assistive technology use. Policies and procedures were also shared in the form of tables, charts, symbol sets, communication boards and software that illustrated not only the occurrence of knowledge transfer and the use of open licenses, but also differences in strategies and the way they were adapted to suit the range of settings in the various countries.

A method which estimates the odour potential from a sludge or slurry could be used to develop empirical relationships with complaints received during e.g. spreading. Additionally such a method can be used to evaluate treatment processes. A further advantage of this approach is that it deals well with the logistics of sampling and measurement. Taking voluminous odour samples from the vicinity of a liquid surface over an open tank requires experience and time if a representative sample is to be obtained, since the act of sampling disturbs the air being sampled unless the sample flow rate is infinitely slow. Not only this, but it is not unusual for the site being assessed to be a considerable distance from the place where the olfactometry or chemical analysis is to be carried out. Storage of samples in transit results in a somewnat unpredictable change in the odour measurement. Results reported by Gillard^^ show attenuations between 40 and 55% for sane samples over a 24 h storage period, and more remarkably, an augmentation of 139$ for one sample after 8 days storage. Though sewage sludge does change with storage, the effect is minor if the sample is refrigerated. Auditory feedback from everyday interactions can be augmented to project digital information in the physical world. For that purpose, auditory augmentation modulates irrelevant aspects of already existing sounds while at the same time preserving relevant ones. A strategy for maintaining a certain level of plausibility is to metaphorically modulate the physical object itself. By mapping information to physical parameters instead of arbitrary sound parameters, it is assumed that even untrained users can draw on prior knowledge. Here we present AltAR/table, a hard- and software platform for plausible auditory augmentation of flat surfaces. It renders accurate augmentations of rectangular plates by capturing the structure-borne sound, feeding it through a physical sound model, and playing it back through the same object in real time. The implementation solves basic problems of equalization, active feedback control, spatialization, hand tracking, and low-latency signal processing. AltAR/table provides the technical foundations of object-centered auditory augmentations, for embedding sonifications into everyday objects such as tables, walls, or floors.

Interactions with physical objects usually evoke sounds, i.e., auditory feedback that depends on the interacting objects (e.g., table, hand, or pencil) and interaction type (e.g., tapping or scratching). The continuous real-time adaptation of sound during interaction enables the manipulation/refinement of perceived characteristics (size, material) of physical objects. Furthermore, when controlled by unrelated external data, the resulting ambient sonifications can keep users aware of changing data. This article introduces the concept of plausibility to the topic of auditory augmentations of physical interactions, aiming at providing an experimentation platform for investigating surface-based physical interactions, understanding relevant acoustic cues, redefining these via auditory augmentation / blended sonification and particularly to empirically measure the plausibility limits of such auditory augmentations. Besides conceptual contributions along the trade-off between plausibility and usability, a practical experimentation system is introduced, together with a very first qualitative pilot study.

Abstract:
In many cases, an organization wishes to release some data, but is restricted in the amount of data to be released due to legal, privacy and other concerns. For instance, the US Census Bureau releases only 1% of its table of records every year, along with statistics about the entire table. However, the machine learning (ML) models trained on the released sub-table are usually sub-optimal. In this paper, our goal is to find a way to augment the sub-table by generating a synthetic table from the released sub-table, under the constraints that the generated synthetic table (i) has similar statistics as the entire table, and (ii) preserves the functional dependencies of the released sub-table. We propose a novel generative adversarial network framework called ITS-GAN, where both the generator and the discriminator are specifically designed to satisfy these two constraints. By evaluating the augmentation performance of ITS-GAN on two representative datasets, the US Census Bureau data and US Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) data, we show that ITS-GAN yields high quality classification results, and significantly outperforms various state-of-the-art data augmentation approaches.

The present work presents the comparison of efficiency of surface-type intensifiers in a wide range of geometric parameters and in the range of Reynolds numbers corresponding to rated laminar and turbulent flow regimes in a channel on the basis of a single general criterion. It is also aimed to clarify objective thermal and hydraulic properties of intensifiers, to present a table of intensifier optimal parameters for the further theory and practice development, to formulate practical recommendations for selecting intensifier types and parameters in the design of promising energy-saving heat transfer equipment. The comparison of intensifiers efficiency was carried out under identical conditions for constricted and unobstructed channels containing intensifiers of various shapes. It is shown that intensifiers in the form of transverse annular ridges and systems of spherical holes show high thermal and hydraulic efficiency at specific flow operating parameters and design parameters of both, a channel and intensifier. The acquired results and recommendations on optimal parameters of surface-type intensifiers make it possible to calculate and design heat exchangers with intensifier optimal configurations and sizes. To confirm the obtained fundamental knowledge in the field of surface heat transfer augmentation based on a system of spherical holes/ridges several heat exchanger prototypes were developed.

Abstract:
We present a novel framework for augmenting data sets for machine learning based on counterexamples. Counterexamples are misclassified examples that have important properties for retraining and improving the model. Key components of our framework include a \textit{counterexample generator}, which produces data items that are misclassified by the model and error tables, a novel data structure that stores information pertaining to misclassifications. Error tables can be used to explain the model's vulnerabilities and are used to efficiently generate counterexamples for augmentation. We show the efficacy of the proposed framework by comparing it to classical augmentation techniques on a case study of object detection in autonomous driving based on deep neural networks.
