Abstract:
This research is entitled “Fashion Representation of Taisho-Showa Era in Kaze Tachinu Animation Film by Hayao Miyazaki”. Fashion style transition from wasou to yosou was found in Taisho-Showa Era. This research aims to discover the form, function, and meaning of fashion in the Taisho-Showa era which are depicted in the film. This research used literature study method and the referral method for the data accumulation, descriptive analysis method for data analysis and for analysis results presented with informal method. For the theory, this research used literary anthropology theory by Poyatos (2008), fashion form theory by Pendergast and Tom (2004), fashion function theory by Barnard (1996), and semiotics theory by Barthes (1964). Based on the analysis results, can be seen that fashion’s form that represent in Taisho-Showa era are divided into two category, first is wasou which consists of hakama, haori, kimono, mandarin shirt, obi, shimada, comb, geta, tabi, and zori, and the second one is yosou that consists of men’s suit, stockings, trench coat, men’s hats, short hair for woman, waved hair for woman, clutch purse, patent leather shoes, and high heeled boots. For the fashion’s function that found in this research are 1) protection function; 2) politeness and concealment function; 3) communication function; 4) individualistic expression; 5) social worth or status; 6) economic worth or status; 7) magical-religious condition; and 8) recreational functions. And for the fashion’s meaning in the Taisho-Showa era, in denotation is refers to the form and design of fashion, while the connotation of fashion is formed by the influence of social and cultural values in Japanese society.

Abstract:
Primary-grade children delight in using three-dimensional action books. Why not build on this interest to help them to practice their counting and basic mathematics facts? Action books have movable parts and are often called pop-up or pop-out books, lift-the-flap books, or surprise books. Children lift flaps, pull tabs, slide panels, move wheels, or turn pop-up pages to initiate a three-dimensional movement. Mathematics three-dimensional action books offer skill practice in a helpful and exciting format. Children can add apples that slide into baskets, subtract airplanes that disappear behind lift-flap clouds, count pop-up crabs that crawl on the shore, or move hands on a clock to show when it is lunchtime.

Abstract:
Background:Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a large-vessel vasculitis characterized by granulomatous T cell- and macrophage infiltration. Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is present in GCA-affected vessels where it may be involved in skewing of tissue destructive macrophages (1). Furthermore, a recent phase 2 clinical trial demonstrated that GM-CSF receptor blockade was superior to placebo at 26 weeks in GCA. However, the cellular source of GM-CSF in GCA is still unclear. Objectives:As T cells have been identified as a major source of GM-CSF in other immune-mediated diseases such as multiple sclerosis, we investigated whether T cells are GM-CSF producers in GCA patients, both systemically and locally.Methods:GM-CSF production capacity by PMA-stimulated PBMCs from newly diagnosed, untreated GCA patients and HCs (N=10 each) was assessed using flow cytometry. Temporal artery biopsies (TABs, N=5) were immunohistochemically stained for CD3, CD8 and GM-CSF. Colocalization of these markers was assessed with immunofluorescence. Results:Proportions of CD4+ (median GCA=3.1%; HCs=2.76%) and CD8+ (median GCA=5.8%; HCs=5.8%) T cells produced GM-CSF after in vitro stimulation, but no significant differences were found between the groups. Immunofluorescence staining confirmed that CD3+ T cells (both CD8+ and CD8-) were positive for GM-CSF in TABs. Interestingly, GM-CSF positivity in TABs correlated strongly with the extent of CD8+ T-cell infiltration (r=0.74, p<0.01), but not with CD3+ T-cell infiltration (r=0.38, p=0.16).Conclusion:Our data imply that T cells are an important source of GM-CSF in GCA lesions. The correlation of the extent of CD8+ T-cell infiltration with GM-CSF positivity suggests that CD8+ T cells are the major source of local GM-CSF overexpression in tissue.References:[1]W.F. Jiemy, Y. Abstract:
A shear tab and high-strength bolts are often used to connect a steel H-beam to a column. The design demand and capacity of these elements vary from one standard to the other. To investigate the effect, this study applied a finite element method (FEM) to develop models for two steel moment connections and validated the effectiveness by test data. The connections were characteristic of bolted-web-and-welded-flange details. The FEM models were then used to study the design of shear tabs and high-strength bolts in accordance with the U.S. and Japan standards and compared to the Taiwan practice. The result showed a small difference in the peak loads of the connections. However, the U.S. direct welded flange connection had flange buckling and strength degradation at a relatively smaller drift. The connection had a thinner shear tab and fewer high-strength bolts. The other two connections had very similar design results and loading responses. The increase in shear-tab thickness reduced the stress concentration and fracture potential of the connections. It is, therefore, recommended to design a shear tab with moment capacity greater than the beam web. This will reduce the stress concentration of the base metal surrounding the beam-flange groove welds, increasing the connection ductility.

Abstract:
Background:Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is an inflammatory disease affecting the medium- and large-sized arteries. The pathology of GCA is characterized by an infiltrate of mainly CD4+ T-cells and macrophages. These macrophages release a wide range of inflammatory, tissue destructive and proangiogenic proteins, including YKL-40. Previously, we demonstrated that macrophage populations in the vessel wall of GCA patients are heterogeneous; one such macrophage subset highly expressed CD206 and MMP-9, and was located in or near the media layer. Cancer studies have implicated YKL-40 production by tumor-associated macrophages in various inflammatory and tissue remodeling processes, including angiogenesis. Less is known about the role of YKL-40 in inflammatory diseases such as GCA.Objectives:Our objective was to investigate the cellular source and the pro-angiogenic function of YKL-40 in GCA patients. Methods:For this study we performed immunohistochemistry (IHC) and cell culture experiments. IHC for YKL-40 and CD206 was performed on GCA positive temporal artery biopsies (TABs; n=12) and GCA positive aortas (n=10) of treatment-naive patients. Expression of YKL-40 by macrophages was confirmed by double staining with macrophage transcription factor PU.1. Additionally, the TABs were stained for IL-13Rα2, recently described as the receptor for YKL-40. The effect of skewing signals on YKL-40 production was assessed by cell culture of monocyte-derived macrophages of GCA patients with either M-CSF or GM-CSF (n=8). Subsequently, the supernatant was assayed by ELISA. Finally, the angiogenic potential of YKL-40 was investigated by tube formation experiments using human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVECs).Results:YKL-40 is produced by a distinct subset of macrophages in GCA TABs and aortas, usually located in or near the media (Figure 1 shows representative stainings in consecutive slides of a GCA TAB). We here show YKL-40 to be expressed by CD206+/MMP-9+ macrophages in all GCA TABs and aortas. In vitro, macrophages were found to produce YKL-40 (Figure 2 shows an increasing YKL-40 production during the maturation of monocytes towards macrophages over 8 days of culture). GM-CSF stimulation, which is known to upregulate CD206 expression in macrophages, gave rise to higher YKL-40 production by GCA macrophages, when compared to M-CSF stimulated macrophages from GCA patients (p=0.038). In addition, YKL-40 stimulation of HMVECs induced more tube formation compared to unstimulated HMVECs. Finally, we showed, by IHC, abundant expression of the YKL-40 receptor IL-13Rα2 in TABs of GCA patients.Figure 1Figure 2Conclusion:Taken together, we show here that a distinct subset of macrophages, skewed by GM-CSF and highly positive for CD206, is responsible for the production of YKL-40 in GCA. The results are in line with previous reports demonstrating that CD206 expression distinguishes YKL-40 positive macrophages from YKL-40 negative macrophages (1). Thus, YKL-40 production by CD206+ macrophages may be involved in angiogenesis in GCA tissues, a process important for the continuation of the inflammatory process.References:[1]Bonneh-Barkay, D. et al., 2012. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the affective capacity of the Tabi boots by examining the object through the ideas of deconstruction. The boots by Maison Martin Margiela were first introduced in 1989 and sold in different variations over the course of the past 30 years. Although there have been several attempts to acknowledge the importance of the body in fashion studies, scholars have not focused on the literal experience of wearing a garment, examined through the touch. Thus, this study begins with a close object study of a pair of Tabi boots and draws on phenomenology to capture the feeling of being dressed. The emphasis is laid upon exploring how the ideas of deconstruction are embedded in the Tabi boots while staying open to other theoretical inquiries. Striving to test the affective potential of the boots, deduced in the first chapter, the second part of this thesis moves from the perception of the ‘I’ to other wearers of the Tabi boots. In conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews, the aim is to understand how the characteristics of the boots may affect the wearer and how this affective capacity may lead to a becoming, as defined by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. Guided by ‘applied theory’, this thesis allowed material, theory, and methods to continuously interact and affect each other.

Baldwin, Metzger Kirsten Anne. "Experimental Verification of a New Single Plate Shear Connection Design Model." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32576.

Full text
Abstract:
Single plate shear connections are designed to have sufficient strength to resist the shear force and moment transferred from the beam. The connections must also provide sufficient ductility to allow the beam end to rotate freely. In the United States the current recommended design method is found in the AISC 13th Edition Steel Construction Manual (2005b). The limited experimental work which led to the current method necessitated additional single plate shear connection investigations. This paper summarizes the results and analysis of eight full scale single plate shear connections tested at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The test setup consisted of a test beam attached to a test column with a single plate shear connection at one end and supported by a roller at the other end. The single plate was welded to the column flange and bolted to the beam web. Load was applied to the test beam at third points until failure of the connection or test beam. The current design method used in the United States was examined with respect to the connection tests performed. In particular, the ultimate shear strength and the rotational capacity were investigated. Suggestions are made regarding changes to the method and further research.

This case study aims to investigate the effects of the application of picture books as supplementary materials to English teaching. It endeavors to examine whether the application of picture books affects the performance of the students in phonics and oral-reading fluency and what the responses from the students in Group A with the picture book and songs applied in teaching to the teaching activities are. In addition, it is hoped to examine whether the long-term school-based supplementary curriculum can be established through the study. The recruited subjects of the case study were one hundred and eighteen sixth-graders at Tai-ho Elementary School in Changhua City. They are evenly divided into two groups--Group A with the picture book and songs applied, Group B with the picture book applied only. A questionnaire toward the teaching activities was employed to gather the responses of the subjects in Group A with songs applied about the study. Furthermore, their favorite and most-disliked activities and their reasons were translated into English and then discussed qualitatively. Besides, the scores of subjects’ English proficiency of phonics and oral-reading fluency in the pre-test and the post-test were collected. All of the data were calculated and analyzed quantitatively by the t-test of the SPSS for Windows Program. The main findings of this study are summarized as follows: 1. Among the teaching activities in the case study, the students in Group A with songs applied like those which they can actively appreciate and participate in; they do not like those which they are not good at. 2. The application of songs in picture books benefits students in phonics learning. 3. The application of songs in picture books benefits students in oral-reading fluency. 4. The picture books with songs can really arouse the interests of students and keep the atmosphere of class vivid. 5. The picture books with songs are suitable for long-term school-based supplementary materials because the application of them can promote the students’ ability in phonics and oral-reading fluency.

Abstract:
Is your computer a little problematic? Slowing down? And you’re not ready to call in expert help? Try these tricks. As always, back up important data first. 1. A surprising number of computer problems—inexplicable system crashes, random program shutdowns, “not enough memory” errors—are caused by faulty RAM chips. These errors are normally hard to diagnose by yourself, but on Windows, the free program Memtest86 (http://www.mem test86.com) makes it easy. On Macintosh OS 9, use RAM Check 2.1, which can be downloaded at http://ftp.traffictrak.com/RAMCheck21.sit or http://download.digidesign.com/support/digi/mac/utilities/ RMCheck210.sea.hqx(.) You can also try Techtool Pro for OS 9 or OS X. 2. Four big demons of computers are dust, heat, moisture, and static. You can take some preventive measures, like covering your CPU and monitor when they’re not in use and protecting your computer by drinking your coffee away from the computer, but demons will strike no matter what you do, and they manifest their presence in odd ways. The most common is disk corruption, which shows up as disappearing or corrupt files and folders. Regular disk maintenance is important to keep these demons at bay. The most well-known tool for repairing disk drives is Norton Utilities (http://www.symantec.com), which is included in Norton System Works. You can use it to diagnose and fix already corrupt files, but it is most useful for preventive maintenance. Using these utilities to optimize or defragment your hard drive on a regular basis makes individual files as contiguous as possible, which can increase the speed at which files and programs are opened. However, Norton Utilities can sometimes cause problems of its own, particularly on older computers, if it is installed to run in the background. If you open System Works and click on Options, Norton Utilities, and then the Startup tab, you can uncheck the boxes that would instruct the program to start whenever you boot up. Then it’s up to you to decide how often you need to activate it, perhaps somewhere between once a week and once a month.

Abstract:
In 2007 Canada entered its first challenge for the International C-Class Catamaran Championship and was victorious in capturing the trophy with five straight wins by Alpha CAN 6 over the venerable Cogito from the USA. Two boats were designed for this challenge - the first was Alpha, a wingsail catamaran, which incorporated some new thinking on sail configuration and hull shape. This made it a successful evolutionary, but not revolutionary, step from the current state-of-the-art boats. Compared to Cogito, the main rival, she had a taller, narrower and thinner wing, lighter construction and more circular hull cross section. The second was Rocker, the bold hydrofoil catamaran, using hulls from the same mold as Alpha and an identical wingsail as the driving force. The daggerboard hydrofoils automatically controlled the ride height with trim tabs, while the control of the rudder elevators was left to the helmsman. Although she flew well, was very controllable, and was spectacular to watch, Rocker could not match the 20 knot plus speed of Alpha.

Abstract:
The use of ride control systems on high speed vessels has become the norm within many industries, producing better seakeeping that in turn provides a more comfortable and operationally effective vessel. Commercial ferry designers have been at the forefront of adoption of new technologies notably with early adoption of T-foils and interceptors. These devices have been taken up by others, for example offshore crew boats and frontline naval warships. The range of vessel types has also expanded with more industries adopting different hull designs including catamarans and trimarans. Ride control systems have developed alongside innovative designers producing for example combined lifting foil and ride control systems, lifting T-foil systems, retractable T-foils. This paper will review the different ride control devices including fins, trim tabs, interceptors, T-foils (including retractable T-foils) and lifting foils. As well as technical aspects, the discussion will consider costs, ease of installation, operational and maintenance requirements and material choice. Extensive examples from a wide range of industries will be presented. By the end of the talk, delegates will have a broad understanding of the options available to them in improving the seakeeping of their vessels.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective and scope This paper aims to establish that proper resource management and governance within the Nigerian oil and gas industry, more specifically, her local participation policy, which focuses on adequately addressing the social and economic concerns of the host communities in oil producing regions of Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta, will ultimately lead to more secure and sustainable economic development and a more attractive investment climate for Nigeria. Methods Procedure, process This research study will employ an analytical approach, more specifically qualitative analysis, in analyzing the interplay between the various factors which have birthed low oil and gas productivity in the Niger delta region of Nigeria and how proper application of Nigeria's local participation policy can influence the circumstances and yield positive result. The research study will rely heavily on available literature and legislative enactments, as well as available case law on the issues concerned. The primary sources in the collection of materials for this paper will comprise of journals, books, and articles which address the relevant research questions guiding the scope of this paper. Results, Observation, conclusion Nigeria's local content policy, just like many other governmental policies in Nigeria, has been criticized as being vulnerable to corruption as a result of the manifest lack of transparency in the Nigerian oil and gas industry, and local content has already been labelled as a potential victim of capture as a result of this dearth in transparency. It is imperative that the broad discretionary powers granted to the local content monitoring board, and the minister of petroleum by the provisions of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act, be utilized in a manner devoid of parochial ethnic sentiments or political interest, in order for Nigeria to properly take advantage of the economic development benefits provided by the proper implementation of local content policy. The long term benefits of local content policy such as technology transfer, long term fiscal incentives, and the growth of local commerce and industry, will go a long way in setting Nigeria on a plain path to sustainable economic growth and better resource management. It is important that the Nigerian government play its role in driving local content policy by facilitating Nigerian enterprises to take active part in the local content programs, as well as keep tabs and monitor the effectiveness of local content policy in achieving its targets. New or additive information to the industry Proper implementation of Local Content policy in Nigeria will be beneficial, not just for the host communities but for the rest of the country, as well as for all investors in the Nigerian oil and gas industry, by providing thousands of employment opportunities for the locals, as well as providing a much needed technology transfer which will result in a structural transformation of not just the local manufacturing industries in Nigeria but the entire Nigerian oil and gas industry as well; thus addressing a major aspect of the social and economic concerns of the local people, and also giving Nigeria's economy a much needed boost towards achieving sustainable development in her natural resources sector.
