Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to build upon the growing body of knowledge relating to music improvisation by investigating the processes used by high school music instrumentalists when improvising music and the factors that influence those processes. Many factors contribute to music improvisation skill and they must all be taken into account when investigating the music improvisation processes of high school music students. The theoretical framework of this study was based on the complex interactions that take place simultaneously between three identified ensembles of factors. The three ensembles of factors were: I . The student profile which included general information and detailed aspects of prior music experience. 2. Enabling skills which included audiation ability, the ability to play music by ear and kinaesthetic abilities. 3. Improvisation processes including, creative processes, cognitive strategies and group or solo contexts for music improvisation. Taking into account the exploratory nature of this study, the single embedded case study design, involving 12 high school music instrumentalists aged between 13 and 15 years, offered the necessary potential to cope with the wide variety of evidence. The formal survey was used to gather information that would establish a detailed profile of each student. The Test of Ability to Audiate and Ability to Play by Ear (TAAAPE) was used to measure students' ability to audiate and play music by ear. Similarly, in order to explore the relationships between improvisation processes, enabling skills and the profile of each student, the Improvisation Ability Test (IAT) was used. This test provided authentic music improvisation experiences in both group and solo contexts. Both tests were scored by two independent judges and the researcher. Finally, the focused interview was used to establish the cognitive strategies used by the students when undertaking the various music improvisation tasks. The ability of the case study design to handle both qualitative and quantitative data proved to be useful in this study. Two major findings emerged from the analysis of the data: 1. The first was that the processes used by this small group of students when engaged in music improvisation were unpredictable. 2. The second major finding relates to evidence that supports the theory of an interaction between the three ensembles of factors as presented in the theoretical framework of this study. However, contrary to what might have been expected, the study further indicated that the interaction of these factors, in the context of the music improvisation processes used by these individual students, did not follow or produce any specific patterns. It was not within the scope of this study to seek the emergence of a model for teaching music improvisation to high school music instrumentalists. However, it has opened the path for further research which could result in the development of such a model.

Abstract:
Ellen Taaffe Zwilich is an important figure in the compositional world, having written a diverse body of works for which she has received many accolades, including the coveted Pulitzer Prize. The second chapter examines this American composer, the commission of the American Concerto, and events leading to the piano reduction of the concerto. The America Concerto is a modern work that incorporates synthetic scales, unusual notation, and the organization of melodic material through motives. The third chapter includes an analysis that identifies the form and tonal centers as well as the primary motives used in the concerto. The fourth chapter includes pedagogy considerations for performance. Issues relating to tessitura, articulation, flexibility, endurance factors, fingerings, and technical features of the piano reduction accompaniment are evaluated. Detailed suggestions are provided to aid in preparing the piece for performance, including a study of stylistic concerns. The American Concerto is quite diverse stylistically as Zwilich explores the symphonic and jazz genres. The dual nature of the trumpet is examined as the piece combines classical and jazz styles in a virtuosic setting.

Williams, Mark R. F. "'The King's Irishmen' : the roles, impact and experiences of the Irish in the exiled court of Charles II, 1649-1660." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2010. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:1fde25af-f340-4b51-a53d-23f68a91a3d0.

Abstract:
This thesis represents an important investigation into the much-neglected period of exile endured by many Royalists as a consequence of the violence and alienation of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms (1639-1651).Drawing from extensive archival research conducted in Britain, Ireland and Europe, this study expands upon existing literature on royalism, British and Irish interaction with Continental Europe and seventeenth-century mentalities more generally in order to illumine the unique issues faced by these exiles. Central to this study are the roles and experiences of the Irish element within Charles II’s exiled court. Recent studies focussed upon the place of Ireland within Europe and the North Atlantic are employed to assess such issues as confessional division, court culture, the impact of memory and the influence of conflicting European ideas upon the survival of the exiles and the course of the restoration cause. A thematic, rather than chronological structure is employed in order to develop these interpretations, allowing for an approach which emphasizes the place of individuals in relation to broader Royalist mentalities. Dominant figures include Murrough O’Brien, Lord Inchiquin (c. 1614-1674), Theobald, Lord Taaffe (d. 1677), John Bramhall (1594-1663), Church of Ireland bishop of Derry, Daniel O’Neill (c. 1612-1664), Father Peter Talbot (SJ) (c. 1618/20 – 1680) and James Butler, marquis of Ormond (1610-1688). Through investigation of Irish strands of royalism and the wider issues in which they were set in the course of civil war and exile, this thesis makes a powerful argument for the need to consider seventeenth-century ideas of allegiance and identity not only within a ‘Three Kingdoms’ approach, but Europe more generally. It also makes a compelling case for the centrality of Irish Royalists in the formation and implementation of policy during the exile period through their familiarity with and access to European centres of power and influence.

Research on cooperative learning is one of the greatest success stories in the history of educational research. But not every cooperative learning group is effective, part of group that wasted time, was inefficient, and generally produced poor work, groups are characterized by a number of dynamics that impair their effectiveness, such as groupthink. In recent years, with the rapid development of IT technology, especially in personal computer and network bandwidth, and constantly introduce new innovative devices such as smart phones and tablet computers, making a lot of research into educational issues and the integration of information on the device, then propose many different teaching methods , from the E-Learning continues to evolve into ubiquitous learning (U-Learning), etc, making the more feasible on learning actives which cannot implement in the traditional teaching, explore new opportunities on the educational research. The main purpose of this study through personal computer, and new mobile devices designed a cooperative learning platform, to reduce the occurrence of learners in cooperative learning groups in the degree of groupthink, and through this platform to enhance learning achievement. In this study, we design the five basic elements of cooperative learning through "positive interdependence", "face to face interaction", "individual responsibility," "social skills", "group process" and with the settlement process on the method of Groupthink in to the cooperative learning platform , and learning can learn on cooperative learning platform by using variety of information device. The platform also provides a wealth of learning materials to learners hope can promote their learning achievement. Through experiments and statistical evaluation of the questionnaire results , the use of cooperative learning platform for learners in relation to the traditional face to face discussion of the learners, the emergence of groupthink in the group have a significant decline in the extent and learning achievement were also significantly improved.

Abstract The purpose of this research aims to explore the effects of explicit teaching before reciprocal teaching on reading comprehension and reading motivation on the second grade students. An experiment with quasi-experimental design study nonequivalent-control design was conducted. The subjects were two classes of second grade students in elementary school. One class with 24 students was assigned to be the experimental group and received reciprocal teaching instruction. The class with 25 students was assigned to be the control group and received regular instruction. The experimental group received 8 weeks, 2 classes a week, total eighteen classes of explicit teaching before reciprocal teaching instruction. Selected storys were used as a teaching material. Whereas the control group received regular instruction. The pretest and post test were administered to the two groups using “ Reading Comprehension Test”, and “Reading Motivation Questionnaire”. The data was analyzed by using One-way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) to compare the acheivements of the two groups. The results indicated as followed: 1. Explicit teaching before reciprocal teaching had significant difference in the reading comprehension ability on the second grade students. 2.Explicit teaching before Reciprocal teaching had significant difference in the reading motivation on the second grade students. Based on the conclusions, this study offers specific recommendations for educators , school administrative unit and future studies to provide references for future implementations or study of explicit teaching before reciprocal teaching. Abstract:
The work is focused on the fate of Irish emigration to Central Europe (the Habsburg monarchy) during the 16th and 17th centuries and its subsequent fate in this region. Particular attention is paid to the family of the Counts Taaffe, who especially in the 19th century significantly influenced politics in the Austrian Empire. Irish emigration in the 17th and 18th century can be divided into three major waves. The first hit after the defeat of Ireland Ulster insurgents in Kinsale. Local elites were not willing to accept a subordinate position and four years after the signing of. Mellifontské contract went 30 September 1607 more than ninety Ulstr for the most important nobles in exile. This "escape poke" had far-reaching consequences for Ireland and has contributed greatly to the realization of England's plans. The second and most extensive emigration met Ireland after the Armistice in Kilkeny in May 1652, ie during the era of Oliver Cromwel. The third wave of emigration then caused the victory of William of Orange over James II. in the battle of the Boyne in 1690 and Aughrimu the 1691. Most Irish emigrants resorted to the Catholic powers, particularly Spain, France and Austria. They can be roughly divided into three groups. First it was the Catholic priests, mainly members of the Franciscan order....

Abstract:
The goal of the thesis was to discuss landscape changes in the cadastral area of interest: Nalžovské Hory village. The landscape has been assessed according to the changes that occurred during the second military mapping (1844-1845) as well as the third military mapping (1877-1880). Changes in the landscape were also assessed using the period after collectivization in the second half of the Twentieth Century and the present day (2011). Further changes have also been proposed for the village, which could be realized by 2020. The development of changes has been observed in agricultural areas, which includes permanent grassland and arable land, as well as the forest and water areas, and finally the urban area. Proposals for changes in the village have been designed to help develop the areas of housing, recreation and business. The practical section provides reasons for the changes and the results are processed in the charts. The work is complemented by a series of historically valuable photos related to the area under study.
