Abstract:
This book summarizes the basic features of living fish. It is introduced by a chapter on the diversity of a group which has over 30,000 species, the largest within the vertebrates, describing the classification systems used for them and the variety of their habitats and morphology. Thereafter the physiology of fish is described and discussed initially by categories such as the outer boundary (the skin), the circulatory system, food processing, reproduction, hormones as integrators and controllers, the nervous system and the very complex set of sensory receptors including the eyes, ears, lateral line and electro-receptors. Unusual structures, adaptations and behaviours reveal the breadth of fish lifestyles from deep-ocean to shallow reef habitats, with both fresh water and marine margins favouring some near-terrestrial forms even emerging to spawn. With enormous ranges of size, shape and lifecycles, fish are capable of extreme longevity and amazing adjustments to their environment, including colour change, light emission by photophores and sporadic hermaphroditism (both sexes in one individual). The use of fish types by scientists is discussed. Referenced throughout, the scope of the book includes reviews of historically important and recent discoveries and some speculation on the future for fish and fish conservation. Appendices are provided to give in-depth information on some topics, including material briefly describing practical procedures, relevant to experimentation and aquaculture, which may prompt further investigation. The glossary with explanations of terms, and the copious illustrations help understanding of this complex subject area.

Rasmussen, Sonja A., and Richard A. Goodman, eds. The CDC Field Epidemiology Manual. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190933692.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The CDC Field Epidemiology Manual is the definitive resource for the most up-to-date guidance for epidemiologists and other experts conducting field investigations to address acute public health concerns that require prompt action. This latest edition (an update of the 3rd edition of the popular book Field Epidemiology, edited by Dr. Michael Gregg) offers practical advice to guide investigators through the core elements of field investigations, beginning with initiating operations and ending with developing interventions and communicating findings to the public. The manual also provides special considerations to address challenges that often arise during field investigations, such as addressing legal issues, working with multiple state and federal agencies, navigating a multinational outbreak investigation, and working within an incident management structure. The manual includes updated information on using new tools for field investigations, such as the latest technologies for data collection and management and incorporating data from geographic information systems (GIS). Finally, the manual includes tips for investigations in a wide variety of settings, including healthcare and community congregate settings, and different types of outbreaks, including acute enteric disease outbreaks, those suspected to be related to intentional use of biologic and toxic agents, and outbreaks of suicide, violence, and other forms of injury. The manual is written primarily for epidemiologists who will be conducting field investigations in local, state, federal, or international settings. However, others who contribute to field investigations (e.g., laboratory scientists, lawyers, experts in public policy and communications) will also find the book to be an excellent source of information. The manual is written in an easily readable format, including boxes and bulleted points, to provide greater utility for investigators in the field.

Sapse, Anne-Marie, ed. Molecular Orbital Calculations for Biological Systems. Oxford University Press, 1998. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195098730.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Molecular Orbital Calculations for Biological Systems is a hands-on guide to computational quantum chemistry and its applications in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. With improvements in software, molecular modeling techniques are now becoming widely available; they are increasingly used to complement experimental results, saving significant amounts of lab time. Common applications include pharmaceutical research and development; for example, ab initio and semi-empirical methods are playing important roles in peptide investigations and in drug design. The opening chapters provide an introduction for the non-quantum chemist to the basic quantum chemistry methods, ab initio, semi-empirical, and density functionals, as well as to one of the main families of computer programs, the Gaussian series. The second part then describes current research which applies quantum chemistry methods to such biological systems as amino acids, peptides, and anti-cancer drugs. Throughout the authors seek to encourage biochemists to discover aspects of their own research which might benefit from computational work. They also show that the methods are accessible to researchers from a wide range of mathematical backgrounds. Combining concise introductions with practical advice, this volume will be an invaluable tool for research on biological systems.

Gordon, Caroline, and David Isenberg, eds. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198739180.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic, autoimmune disease that can affect any part of the body, causing the immune system to attack the body’s cells and tissue, and resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. It is characterized by the presence of autoreactive B and T cells and the production of a broad, heterogeneous group of autoantibodies (autoAb); the absence of a unique presentation makes its diagnosis difficult, even for qualified clinicians. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus focuses on providing a practical approach to the assessment and management of patients with this complex, multisystem, autoimmune disease, in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of the disease and its complications. It provides detail on the history and epidemiology of SLE alongside comprehensive sections on clinical features, treatment, and special situations. As well as detailing the challenging management issues of SLE, this title provides an overview of the numerous investigations specific to the condition, assessment of disease activity, symptomatic treatment, patient education, and biologic therapies. A specific section on juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus also provides the practising clinician with the knowledge needed to manage this distinct and aggressive stage of SLE.

Abstract:
Hormones are highly biologically active endogenous compounds that control the growth, development, physiology, and homeostasis of numerous organ systems. Because of this, they have long been thought likely to play key roles in both normal and abnormal (malignant) growth. They are also noteworthy for being produced away from the tissues that they control, and are thus secreted into circulating blood to reach their target organs. This combination of potent, targeted agents of growth and development that can be measured in available biologic fluids has made steroidal and peptide hormonesparticularly susceptible and relevant to epidemiologic investigation. In addition, medications containing hormones and hormone antagonists have come into widespread use, providing further opportunities for epidemiologic insights into hormonal carcinogenesis. The development of increasingly more accurate assays to measure sex hormones and their metabolites has resulted in major advances in understanding the hormonal etiology of breast and gynecologic malignancies.

Abstract:
Systemic vasculitis is characterized by blood vessel inflammation which may lead to tissue injury from vascular stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm, and/or rupture. Apart from relatively common vasculitides such as Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) and Kawasaki's disease (KD), most of the primary vasculitic syndromes are rare in childhood, but are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. New classification criteria for childhood vasculitis have recently been proposed and validated. The cause of most vasculitides is unknown, although it is likely that a complex interaction between environmental factors such as infections and inherited host responses trigger the disease and determine the vasculitis phenotype. Several genetic polymorphisms in vasculitis have now been described that may be relevant in terms of disease predisposition or development of disease complications. Treatment regimens continue to improve, with the use of different immunosuppressive medications and newer therapeutic approaches such as biologic agents. We provide an overview of paediatric vasculitides focusing on HSP, KD, and polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). Key differences (where relevant) between paediatric and adult vasculitis are highlighted. In addition we discuss new emerging challenges particularly in respect to the long-term cardiovascular morbidity for children with systemic vasculitis, and emphasize the importance of future international multicentre collaborative studies to further increase and standardize the scientific base of investigating and treating childhood vasculitis.
