Full textLocated at the intersection of technology, organizations, society and policy, information systems (IS) play an important role in addressing major societal dilemmas, such as sustainable development. In recent years, environmental sustainability, more particularly, Green IS, has received considerable attention by IS scholars. This thesis contributes to this literature by providing a comprehensive understanding of the emergent concept of Responsible Innovation (RI), and how to apply RI in IS innovations. The contention is that by adopting RI principles, IS organizations and practitioners can become change agents of innovation for sustainability. This thesis presents three interrelated studies which demonstrate how this change can be enabled. The first study develops a taxonomy of RI facilitators as a starting point to applying this framework in IS research and practice. The taxonomy led to the identification of six dimensions that facilitate RI projects. The second study involves a qualitative field study of organizations, investigating the application of RI in their innovation processes. This study led to the creation of theoretical propositions on the application of the RI framework for IS innovations. The third study, using an action design research methodology, develops a training workshop aimed at teaching RI to IS practitioners. The results of this study suggest the workshop is effective in engaging people in reflexivity about IS innovations projects and encouraging them to apply RI principles in their future careers. Bridging the gap between practice and theory, this thesis is a valuable source of knowledge for IS researchers and practitioners to integrate RI in IS innovations, leading us closer to the prerequisites needed for sustainability in organisations.

Full textThe knowledge universe of an innovator-entrepreneur (IE) can be conceptualized using maps of categories or cognitive taxonomy (Brännback and Carsrud, 2010). The information possessed by an entrepreneur following a high tech invention (Mohr et al, 2003) constitutes "knowledge structures" (Walsh, 1995) sharable with people involved in the innovation design process. Through work on these structures with the IEs and then their business coaches, an information system can be created. From initial maps of categories a near-decomposable system as a hierarchy of components can be developed, dictated by effectual logic (Sarasvathy & Simon, 2000; Sarasvathy, 2001). The hierarchy of components related to the model developed enables a new and better design of maps of category, which in turn makes the artifact (method) more cohesive and relevant. The artifact thus comprised, an "effectual information system" which can be simultaneously used by entrepreneurs and business coaches, plays the role of mediator and fosters the emergence of heuristics to develop strategy during participation in a business incubation program

Full textThis research-action in management sciences is placed at the crossroads between information, firm and life theories. Its objective was to understand and characterize the processes of emergence and evolution of the information and communication systems (ICS), using an integrative and global angle taking into account cognitive and environmental factors, and including the actor within the definition of the ICS. The evolutionary approach of the populations of ISC represents a continuous and non linear dynamics, according to gradualist try-mistake-selection-retention cycles, and a dual saltationist scheme. The long term indeterminism principle highlights the game of random and necessity around the actors in and around the ICS, as well as the effect of the entropic time arrow. The evolution is realized through competition, association or cooperation, and is characterized by the transmission of a teleonomic patrimony submitted to selective variations within the time, and which reflects the primary functions of the ICS. It is structured on genomic bases of knowledge and relations, mobilized and operationalized through the ways of competences and routines (intrinsic dimensions of the ICS), that will allow the satisfacing of the environment according to the context and the problem to be solved (extrinsic dimensions). The managerial implications of this research crystallize a more integrative vision of the ISC seen as factors of continuous innovation, and which processes of evolution can be facilitated according to the complexity of the problem to be solved, and the constraints linked to the historical and environmental context

Full textSince the beginning of the 21st century, the French Army Light Aviation (ALAT) has been concerned with the process of digitalization of the battlefield. In the meantime, only very few scholars had addressed this issue although the consequences of such studies could lead to a paradigm shift in the aerocombat. This Ph. D. Thesis aims to outline a series of new outcomes in terms of evolutions of the Information System understood from the perspective of emerging uses developed by the ALAT pilots dealing with Helicopter Mission Planning. This research studies the emerging uses apprehended as “bricolages” in Ciborra’s sense and in the socio materiality theoretical framework. However, the operationalization of the results is subject to the epistemological framework of critical realism, on the one hand, and to the implementation of new methods in terms of experience feedbacks (Lessons Learned), on the other hand

Full textThis research was focused on the use and the non-use of ICT in the cancer care networks in France. To understand these two categories, it’s at first necessary to take into account the circuits and communication processes genealogy. Previous technologies and communication processes are used to evaluate and estimate the networks’ technical offer. The new technologies do not create new exchange circuits. They are only used reinforce the ones already at work. The apprehension of these two categories then requires the analysis of the socio-political and professional aspects of the reforms. The non-use of ICT in cancer care networks can also be explained by a form of social critique produce by the professionals when it comes to developing a new policy. For health professionals the network’s technical offer can be seen as a tool to redefine power centres, in competition context between healthcare institutions and medical specialties. ICT are also used as a monitorin and tracing system by the politics. It is impossible to study the use and the non-use of ICT in the health ca sector without taking into account the incompatibility between medical logic behind doctors’ work and the administrative rationality that outlines the reform. This incompatibility explains why the ICT is not used in man occasions. Finally, note that the research comes to the conclusion that there is a necessity to recognize this category of non-use

Full textInteractive video was a long time considered as a technological innovation capable of producing new systems of communication. In spite of the possibilities offered, no application has ever gone beyond the prototype stage. The study of the behaviour of interactive video terminals users, denotes that contrary to its promoters suppositions, this technology which resorts more and more to computers, has gained the interest of a large public. Interactive video must be viewed in both the economical sector of communication and data-processing (hardware and software). By this means can be considered how the situations observed between 1988 and 1991 may be developed. The present report particularly emphasizes video has little or no relation with new forms of writing, nor with artificial intelligence, or even the apperance of a new form of communication ; we are above all, in presence of new technological apparatus designed for distributing information. The study of functions and programmes contents proposed by the interactive terminals in public places shows that the role of the users consists mainly in cooperating towards a setting-up of a personalized information ; this collaboration requires for the user, the complete control of the technical rudiments of data-processing. The outcome of interactive video in public places will in no way be understood without taking into account the entire proposals of the data-processing products designed by the term "multimedia". In this aspect the major contribution to the formation of interactive video users, would appear to be the elaboration of a new training scherme to meet the needs of data-processing multimedia hardware and software
