Full textA significant growth in production and consumption of composite materials can be seen recently; growth reinforced by the new European standards, aimed at reducing CO2 emissions by the year 2020.The producing of complex parts can cause many difficulties for manufacturing because of their geometries and / or their constituents (using of various materials). For example, dry zones or geometric distortion formation. The origins of these difficulties are often related to a lack of knowledge and control of the reinforcement's impregnation phases and material curing.Improving the robustness of the processes demands a detailed knowledge of physical phenomena that occur during the producing. For this, we studied the composite materials production through the implementation of a laboratory demonstrator in the project LCM Smart. This pilot injection was used to validate instrumentation solutions, from innovative sensors (OFS) developed in partnership with the optical laboratory Hubert Curien. The application of this instrumentation in the context of RTM process monitoring in the development of simple parts has demonstrated the capabilities of OFS to control physical characteristics of the part (the flow front, temperature, residual strain and curing degree). The comparison of the measured characteristics with numerical simulations carried out in collaboration with ESI showed a good correlation. Finally, instrumentation has demonstrated the capacity of composite tool made by HexTool to minimize the residual stresses due to the tool/part interaction

Full textTwo ways of optimizing waste biodegradation in a bioreactor landfill have been studied: how to set-up the waste so that the kinetic of biodegradation is increased, and how to inject leachate. To achieve this, two full-scale experimental areas have been instrumented; modelling and laboratory work enable to better understand the occurring phenomena. To study the impact of waste placement, nine test cells of 1700 m3 were filled with different procedures (compaction, shredding and lift thickness). The instrumentation allowed to follow qualitatively the onset of methanogenesis, and to distinguish some steps of the biodegradation process consequently to determine the relative influence of the different placement procedures. The three tested procedures appeared to be interesting on the short term. Follow up of the project on a longer term will enable to check this tendency. The study regarding waste injection optimization has been realized on a full-scale landfill cell. The injection system implemented is a network of buried injection pads, filled with a drainage material. Whereas the type of filling material does not influence the injection system performances, underlying waste properties seem to rule leachate fluxes. A reduction of the performances with repeated injections unlighted a potential clogging of the injection systems or a decrease of the underlying waste permeability

Full textSpintronics devices manipulate the electron spin degree of freedom to process information. In this thesis, we investigate spin-dependent quantum transport properties to optimize the performances of spintronics devices. Through ab initio approach, we research the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), spin Hall effect (SHE), as well as spin injection efficiency (SIE). It has been demonstrated that heavy metals (HMs) are able to modulate TMR effects in MgO-based magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), and tungsten, molybdenum, and iridium are promising to enhance TMR. Moreover, substitutional atom doping can effectively optimize SHE of HMs, which would strengthen spin Hall angles (SHAs) to achieve efficient spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of MTJs. To eliminate the mismatch between ferromagnetic and barrier layers in MgO-based MTJs, we design the MTJ with bond-free van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction VSe₂/MoS₂ and report the room-temperature TMR. The occurrence of quantum-well resonances enables voltage control to be an effective method to modulate TMR ratios in vdW MTJ. We put forward the idea of SOT vdW MTJ, which employs SOT to switch vdW MTJ and requires vdW materials with strong SHE. Research on MoTe₂ and WTe₂ verifies the possibility of realizing this idea. Both of them are layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) and exhibit strong SHEs, as well as large SHAs thanks to their low electrical conductivity. Lastly, motivated by the demand of a two-dimensional (2D) switchable device with long spin diffusion length, we construct the spin injection system with silicene monolayer, and reveal high SIEs under electric fields. Works in this thesis would advance the research of spintronics devices

Full textVaccination is considered as one of the best therapeutic intervention to fight against infectious diseases. However, we still fail to develop protective vaccines for diseases such as AIDS or B hepatitis, which highlights our lack of knowledge of immune processes. For this thesis, we relied on a non-human primate model associated wih a vaccinia virus living attenuated vaccine derived called MVA (Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara). We deciphered innate, but also adaptive immune response using this model. MVA induces an important inflammatory reaction at the injection site and in the blood after intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal administration. However, the magnitude of this immune reaction, as well as cellular and molecular effectorsin varies depending on the administration route. The consequences are important and lead to different adaptive immune profiles, with Th2 oriented response after subcutaneous route, and Th1 oriented response after intramuscular and intradermal route. It allowed us to highlight several cellular and molecular signatures that might modulate immune response in our model

Full textCombining an alternative technology like charge compression ignition (HCCI) with renewable energy such as biomass is a good compromise to reduce pollutant emissions at the source. One major problem of this combustion is the control of ignition timing; the direct injection of solid particles in suspension into the reactive mixture may control the start of ignition. Hence, the work was divided into two parts. In the first part, gaseous biomass combustion was studied experimentally on a rapid compression machine under HCCI conditions. Because of the complexity of this combustion mode, a simplified approach of the process was simulated numerically on Chemkin-Pro to study the effects of initial conditions and fuel composition on the physico-chemical aspects of the combustion as well as the produced pollutant emissions. After highlighting the advantages of lean combustion, and a fuel type biogas/syngas in reducing pollutant emissions, a database was built to select an optimized range of conditions for minimal emissions and a specific reactivity. The second part of this work was dedicated to ignition control. A particle injector was conceived to inject biomass powder into the reactive mixture directly. This system was combined with the rapid compression machine, allowing the study of biomass combustion with different initial conditions prior to its injection into reactive gas. The results of this study shed light on the promising effects of powder injection in the control of lean homogeneous combustion

Full textThe present dissertation reports on investigations on open-channel flows and Poiseuille flows of liquid/liquid systems. The first part of the dissertation considers the propagation of a gravity current over a denser ambient miscible liquid. A controlled flow rate of fresh water and of polymer solutions were released upon the free surface of an ambient salty water at rest in a basin, in order to characterize with te help of a method based on image analysis and the exploitation of spatio-temporal diagrams, the effect of polymer shear-thinning property on the temporal evolution of front progress and spreading of gravity current in ambient liquid and of mixing layer depth as well. A local study consisting in the development of a large scale PIV, aiming at describe to hydrodynamic fields existing in both fluids completed the previous global study. The second part of the dissertation considers a co-current water/oil flow in a duct, in order to simulate the lubricated pipelining of heavy crude oils which were being represented by oils gifted with high viscosity and a viscoplastic rheological behaviour. The effect of bed slope and flow rates ratio on global pressure drop were characterized in order to define the conditions of process optimal efficiency. A local characterization of the interfacial instabilities completed the previous global investigation

Full textIn industry, although on-line analysis of gaseous effluents using gas chromatography is carried out without major difficulty, the analysis of liquids remains problematic and is one of the main issues to be solved. Indeed, compared to an analysis carried out in a laboratory, the on-line analysis of a liquid sample would bypass the steps of sampling and preparation prior to injection and would avoid problems of contamination and representativeness of the sample. Systems for injecting liquids on-line are currently available; however, difficulties are encountered, due to the discrimination of analytes. It is in this context that a valve dedicated to the on-line injection of liquids was developed, validated under laboratory conditions and finally implemented in the oil industry. Another issue, related, amongst other things, to the reduction of maintenance and installation costs, as well as to the compatibility of analytical systems for industry and for micro-pilots, steered instrumental developments towards the miniaturization of systems. Different technological bricks were therefore brought together to assess the feasibility of a miniaturized system involving the technology for on-line injection of liquid. Finally, and still in the context of miniaturization, short monolithic columns were implemented in gaseous phase chromatography at high pressure, first in the laboratory and then on industrial gas effluents. They allowed very fast analyses to be performed which had greater efficiency per unit of length while still being able to act on the selectivity of the columns thanks to the control of their surface properties
