Abstract:
Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has gained significant interest due to the freedom it offers in creating complex-shaped and highly customized parts with little lead time. However, a current challenge of AM is the lack of geometric accuracy of fabricated parts. To improve the geometric accuracy of 3D printed parts, this paper presents a three-dimensional geometric compensation method that allows for eliminating systematic deviations by morphing the original surface mesh model of the part by the inverse of the systematic deviations. These systematic deviations are measured by 3D scanning multiple sacrificial printed parts and computing an average deviation vector field throughout the model. We demonstrate the necessity to filter out the random deviations from the measurement data used for compensation. Case studies demonstrate that printing the compensated mesh model based on the average deviation of five sacrificial parts produces a part with deviations about three times smaller than measured on the uncompensated parts. The deviation values of this compensated part based on the average deviation vector field are less than half of the deviation values of the compensated part based on only one sacrificial part.

Abstract:
Objective. To systematically review the international literature for internal nasal septal deviation classification systems and summarize them for clinical and research purposes. Data Sources. Four databases (including PubMed/MEDLINE) were systematically searched through December 16, 2015. Methods. Systematic review, adhering to PRISMA. Results. After removal of duplicates, this study screened 952 articles for relevance. A final comprehensive review of 50 articles identified that 15 of these articles met the eligibility criteria. The classification systems defined in these articles included C-shaped, S-shaped, reverse C-shaped, and reverse S-shaped descriptions of the septal deviation in both the cephalocaudal and anteroposterior dimensions. Additional studies reported use of computed tomography and categorized deviation based on predefined locations. Three studies graded the severity of septal deviations based on the amount of deflection. The systems defined in the literature also included an evaluation of nasal septal spurs and perforations. Conclusion. This systematic review ascertained that the majority of the currently published classification systems for internal nasal septal deviations can be summarized by C-shaped or reverse C-shaped, as well as S-shaped or reverse S-shaped deviations in the anteroposterior and cephalocaudal dimensions. For imaging studies, predefined points have been defined along the septum. Common terminology can facilitate future research.

The study aims to assess the additional systematic error caused by the assessment of the depolarization constant. Based on the long time assessment of this constant, a mean value and a standard deviation can be retrieved. A sensitivity study could assess the deviation of the depolarization value in high and low depolarizing atmospheric layers. Based on these deviations, the systematic error of the calibration is retrieved and included in the final depolarization products.

This paper presents the technique of decomposition of form deviation based on the use of wavelet filter and Fourier transform. The method allows decomposing the total deviation into systematic, random systematic (waviness) and random components. The method testing was carried out for the statistics of the deviation of the suction side of the turbine engine compressor blade. The accuracy check of the estimates of form deviations generated by the method in a series of simulated surfaces with pre-laid characteristics was carried out. The results showed that the method of decomposition allows one to estimate exactly the components of the form deviation of the simulated surfaces in their series.

ABSTRACT: In an internal control audit, the consequences and assessment subjectivity of control problems motivate managers to try to persuade auditors to lower the assessed severity of an observed control deviation. We report an experiment in which 106 audit seniors evaluate either information technology (IT) or manual control deviations that are potentially indicative of significant deficiencies, after exposure to persuasion tactics based in either concession or denial. For IT control deviations, we find that auditors assess the significance of deficiency lower and the perceived adequacy of management's explanation higher for concessions than for denials. For manual control deviations, we find no differences between concessions and denials. Our results provide evidence of a systematic bias in auditor judgment and indicate a rationale for the ubiquity of management persuasion attempts around control deviations—sometimes they work.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, means many changes in the lives of approximately one and a half billion Muslims. This, with background in the efficient market hypothesis, has resulted in several studies on potentially reoccurring price deviations in connection with Ramadan, a so-called Ramadan effect. Previous studies show somewhat conflicting results, which motivates further research within the subject. The changed routines of daily life during Ramadan have previously been used as the explanatory variable for the Ramadan effect. The authors question the validity of this relationship and therefore further examine it with an argumentative base in Behavioral finance. Aim: This study aims to investigate whether a Ramadan effect exists on any of 17 Muslim stock markets. Furthermore, it aims to critically analyze previous research within the area and examine whether the physical and psychological effects of fasting have any explanatory value in an eventual existence of a Ramadan effect. Completion: The study uses both a qualitative and quantitative approach with a focus on statistical analysis of the study’s numerical data. Regression analysis with dummy variables represents the statistical method and the results are analyzed by applying Behavioral finance to the literature study in order to explain the results. Conclusion: The only market that shows a systematic price deviation during Ramadan is Pakistan. This is not coherent with previous research. Furthermore, the previously used explanatory variables do not seem to have any great explanatory value since the variables are coherent across the markets whereas the effects on the stock markets are not.

Anselius, Sara. "Safety first: a case study of incident and accident reporting in a company within the construction and civil engineering industry." Thesis, KTH, Byggteknik och design, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-253813.

Abstract:
The construction industry is an exciting and community developing industry, but it is also very much talked about because of the high injury frequency that the industry is characterized by. As a part of preventing accidents at work, the employer conducts systematic work environment work to detect risky parts of the work and to remedy these. Despite the elimination of risks at work, accidents and incidents - so-called deviations in the working environment - occur. Deviations in the working environment must be reported immediately to the employer. Within the company that is subject of this study, the deviations are reported and stored a system called BIA. BIA enables, based on the deviation reports, to create statistical data for the company with respect to different parameters. This report is based on this deviation statistics with regard to accidents and incidents, produced from the reporting tool BIA. The study has investigated in which stages/phases incidents and accidents occur, which work operations that cause incidents and accidents, as well as injury risks and causes of injury behind accidents and incidents. The majority of the company's incidents and accidents occur during construction projects, production and land work. Incidents are caused by work tasks such as excavation work, work at/with passing vehicle traffic and movement within the area. Accidents are caused by work at/by machine, manual handling of material / product and work at/with handheld work equipment. The damage risks in the event of incidents are vehicle accidents, hit by falling or flying objects and stuck or clamped between objects. The causes of injury caused by accidents are damage by self-handled objects, fall at the same level and contact with sharp objects. Fall from height and fall at the same level are the cause of damage in a large part of the accidents. The result of the study also shows that the information given in the event reports in BIA, either lacks of information or that the information is inadequate.

Abstract:
2013/2014
The change in mortality trends experienced over the last decades leads to the use of projected mortality tables in order to avoid underestimation of the future liabilities and costs in long term insurance products such as life annuities and pension funds. Although the projected mortality tables aim to capture the dynamic structure of mortality in the future, the future mortality trend itself is random and systematic deviations from the projected mortality might take place. Being a non-pooling risk, the impact of this ``uncertainty risk'' on the insurance portfolios can be dramatic due to the fact that the severity resulting from it increases as the size of the portfolio. For this reason, a proper modelling of uncertainty risk in mortality trends is required. In this work the uncertainty risk modelling in mortality trends has been studied. In this aspect, the two stochastic models in the literature, scenario based and dynamic models have been adopted and assessed their level of capturing the uncertainty in mortality trends. One of the models, the static model, has been extended to the continuous case with the allowance of the multiple cohorts in the portfolio. As defining the model, two approximation methods has been adopted to define the distribution of total number of deaths in the portfolio. Bayesian inferential procedure has been used in updating the random variables representing the uncertainty risk to the experience in the portfolio.

Abstract:
Standard economic analysis of law is based on rational choice theory. In recent decades, numerous experimental and empirical findings have established prevalent and systematic deviations from the assumptions of economic rationality. These findings have been gradually integrated into mainstream economic analysis, including economic analysis of law, to form behavioral law and economics. The introduction highlights the important contributions of behavioral studies to economic analysis of law and to legal analysis more generally. It describes the scope of the book and outlines its structure. It also mentions legal spheres in which the existing scholarship does not yet lend itself to systematic synthesis.

Abstract:
• To understand the concept of mean, variance, and standard deviation pertaining both to a large sample (population) and a small sample. • To define the standard deviation of the mean of a number of repeated measurements and understand its relation to the sample standard deviation. • To define confidence intervals about a mean and show how to use them to indicate measurement precision. • To introduce robust estimators of representing the average and sample standard deviation. • To appreciate the difference between measurement repeatability and reproducibility…. Why do we bother with means and standard deviations? Because these two statistics tell us a great deal about the data and the population from which they come. A mean of a number of repeated measurements of the concentration of a test solution is an estimate of the concentration of the test solution and the sample standard deviation gives a measure of the random scatter of the values obtained by measurement. Together with the appropriate units they represent the result. This information is not necessarily the answer to: ‘‘What is the concentration of the test solution and how sure are you of that answer?’’ To answer this question an uncertainty budget must be prepared, which includes errors, random and systematic, arising from all aspects of the experiment (of which the standard deviation of repeated measurements is just one). Why is it good to repeat analytical measurements? There might be an argument for the ‘‘quit while you are ahead’’ school but repeating a measurement gives increased confidence in the result, especially if the numbers appear to agree. But apart from the appearance of consistency, do you get better answers by repeating measurements, and are more repeats better than fewer repeats? The answer to both questions is ‘‘yes,’’ as we shall see in this chapter. Note that the statistical treatment of repeated results does not tell us about systematic error unless we can compare our mean with a known or assigned value of the quantity being measured.

Abstract:
The growth of state bureaucracy is seen by many as a threat to individual freedom. This concern has been mitigated in part by the commitment of the liberal state to refrain from engaging in paternalistic intervention. This chapter revisits John Stuart Mill’s classic arguments against paternalism to assess recent challenges to the traditional liberal deference of individual autonomy. The discovery of systematic deviations from rationality has suggested to many that state officials may in certain cases be able to improve individual welfare by intervening in ways that override individuals’ own judgment. These proposals can be analyzed under three categories: those having to do with temporal distortions of preference, with biases in cognition, and with manipulation of choice through non-rational means. This suggests certain valid exceptions to the general rule laid down by Mill.

Abstract:
Normal labour involves an appropriate-sized fetus in a vertex presentation with a well-flexed head that descends and rotates within the maternal pelvis in response to uterine contractions, delivering in an occipitoanterior position. Abnormal labour occurs when any one or a combination of these factors deviates from normal. It may involve a malpresentation (e.g. face, brow, or breech), a malposition (e.g. occipitoposterior), or cephalopelvic disproportion. The consequences include prolonged labour, obstructed labour, operative vaginal delivery, or caesarean section. Appropriate management requires expertise in clinical assessment, decision-making, and the technical and non-technical skills of operative delivery. A systematic approach is required including an awareness of risk factors for abnormal labour, early identification of deviations from normal, use of preventative strategies where possible, and appropriate intervention when necessary. Good teamwork and clear communication between midwives and obstetricians is essential within a labour ward setting. Timely transfer may be required in a homebirth setting. Particular skills are required in low-resource settings where obstructed labour may be advanced at the time of presentation.

Abstract:
I have argued throughout this study that participatory art practices need to be understood in conjunction with the anxieties and contradictions that accompany them. Whether or not this is a formally constitutive characteristic worthy of naming as a genre is, in my view, less important than finding ways to account for and be responsive to the questions it poses. This is the place that this study departed from, yet oddly, it also the place it finds itself arriving at. For if this study has inquired into some of the conditions for and articulations of participation in the arts, it has also turned out to be an investigation of the ways in which participation is already circumscribed by the questions we ask of it, such as the social impact of participatory art, or its specific aesthetic features. The frictions in this endeavour will have become apparent to the perceptive reader: on the one hand I attempt to identify commonalities and systematic coherences in a field named as participatory art, and on the other hand I seek to analyse it in terms of its deviations from, and incommensurability with, a systematic narrative, in the emphasis of unruly, subtle, non-formalizable modes of participation. I treat participatory art as an inherited category, looking at its diverse, specific operations, or disciplinary routes and historical legacies. At the same time, I try to alter the terms of received wisdom by extrapolating principles and observations from the confines of one disciplinary arena into another. I search for ways in which affiliation to a given type of participatory practice might be described, only to find that formal coherences are perforated by aspects that exceed those same terms of affiliation. The analysis of participatory art and the conceptualization of participation in and through art thereby become intertwined in complex ways....

Abstract:
In turbomachinery, friction contacts are widely used to reduce dynamic stresses in turbine blades in order to avoid expensive damages. As a result of energy dissipation in the friction contacts the blade vibration amplitudes are reduced. In case of so-called friction dampers, which are pressed on the platforms of the blades by centrifugal forces, the damping effect can be optimized by varying the damper mass. This optimization can be done by means of a simulation model applying the so-called component mode synthesis and the Harmonic Balance Method to reduce computation time. It is based on the modal description of each substructure. In a real turbine or compressor blading great differences in the magnitude of the individual blade amplitudes occur caused by unavoidable mistuning of all system parameters like contact parameters and natural frequencies of the blades. It may happen that most of the blades experience only small stresses whereas a few blades experience critical stresses. Therefore, it is necessary to consider mistuning for all system parameters to simulate the forced response of bladed disk assemblies with friction contacts. For a mistuned bladed disk the complete system has to be modeled to calculate the dynamic response. In practice, usually the standard deviations instead of the distributions of the system parameters are known. Therefore, Monte-Carlo simulations are necessary to calculate the forced response of the blades for given mean values and standard deviations of the system parameters. To reduce the computational time, an approximate method has been developed and extended for small and moderate standard deviations of the system parameters to calculate the distribution and the envelopes of the frequency response functions for statistically varying system parameters, in the following called statistical mistuning. The approximate method is based on a sensitivity analysis and the assumption of a Weibull distribution of the vibration amplitudes of the blades. Both, the approximate method and the assumption of a Weibull distribution of the vibration amplitudes are validated by Monte-Carlo simulations. By these investigations the influence of different arrangements of the system parameters for given mean values and standard deviations of the vibration amplitudes of the blades can be determined, too. For the present investigations only a small influence of the arrangement of blades with respect to their natural frequencies has been observed. On the other hand, an intentional mistuning of the damper masses and the natural frequencies of the blades in a systematic way, in the following called systematic mistuning, can be investigated to reduce the amplitudes of the system. The simulation results of a systematic mistuning has been validated by a test rig with a rotating bladed disk assembly with friction dampers. The investigations show a good agreement between the simulations and the measurements but only a slight decrease of the maximum amplitudes in case of a systematic mistuning.

Abstract:
Oil storage tanks are identified as the major hazard installations because of the hazard of huge fire & explosion. Evaluating the risk and controlling the danger is the advancement of accident prevention and the compulsory requirement of laws. HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Analysis), is a simple but intensive, systematic, qualitative risk analytical method, is an important technique for the identification of hidden hazards in operation of tank facility. It can only qualitatively account for potential risks, but cannot quantify their possibility and severity. Thus, research involving HAZOP quantitative analysis has become an area of focus. Due to uncertainty of deviation probability in the traditional HAZOP analysis, this paper discusses a new approach of HAZOP quantitative analysis, combining HAZOP with fuzzy set theory to calculate the possibilities of deviation and consequence quantitatively. The evaluation process and technique route of risk analysis is also brought forward in this paper. Based on the traditional HAZOP analysis, the typical outputs of a HAZOP analysis can be achieved, including identification of possible deviation states, identification of the possible causes for deviations and probable worst case consequence. Next, according to fuzzy evaluation of some HAZOP experts on deviation by means of their knowledge, the triangular fuzzy-number is introduced in this paper to conduct quantitative calculation. Based on the fuzzy set theory, combining Delphi method and judging matrix method, the linguistic values are transformed into triangular fuzzy numbers. The probability of deviation is evaluated by fuzzy cut and raking method of fuzzy numbers. Finally, the probability of consequence caused by deviation is evaluated. A complete quantitative risk analysis example for oil tank is conducted, the probabilities of deviations and incident consequence are computed, the quantitative risk is determined and reasonable mitigations of the storage tanks are given. It is shown that the proposed approach is advanced and practicable to make a quantitative assessment on the risk of existing deviation, which is helpful for risk managers to bring forward the suggested measure and regulate the hidden hazards.

Abstract:
Employing terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) for geodetic deformation measurements requires attaining the highest possible accuracy. In this paper, we estimate the influence of varying incidence angles (IA) and materials on measurements regarding the distance component. Considering not only stochastic characteristics, the use of a scanning total station enables additionally the study of systematic distance deviations. By using the total station ocular, the device is brought into the local coordinate system of a laser tracker via position resection and intersection. The point cloud recording, with a Close-Range scanner, represents the reference. Due to transformation into a common coordinate system, defined by a laser tracker, a distance driven point comparison is possible. To test a large number of conditions an automated setup was developed. For each device, a suitable interface was implemented in the Robot Operating System. After the specimen has been set up, an automatic measurement can be performed for data acquisition. We can demonstrate that different building materials and varying IAs cause systematic distance deviations up to 3 mm magnitude. For measurement objects, this kind of correction must be considered, especially when the measurement configuration varies between measurement epochs. It can be demonstrated that the values and characteristics observed in the laboratory agree to those obtained on-site. However, the chosen approach thereby reveals previously unrecognized challenges that need to be considered for the use of TLS in high-accuracy deformation analysis.

Abstract:
The need for geometrical variations management is an important issue in design, manufacturing and all other phases of product development. Two main axioms cover geometrical variations, namely the axiom of manufacturing imprecision and the axiom of measurement uncertainty. Therefore, this paper reviews common models for the description of non-ideal geometry (shape with geometric deviations) and shows how the random field theory can be applied to create more realistic skin models (a model which comprises these geometric deviations). Furthermore, methods to estimate and to express the underlying random field from a sample population are shown. These can be used to create and simulate random shapes considering systematic and random deviations observed through measurement or gathered from manufacturing process simulations. The proposed approach incorporates given information from manufacturing process simulations or prototypes. Based on these information, skin model samples are created which can represent the “realistic” part in assembly simulations or other geometrical analyses. This can help to identify the optimal tolerance sets within every stage of the product development process. The efficiency of the introduced approaches is shown in a case study.

Abstract:
Recently the statistical characterizations of financial markets based on physics concepts and methods attract considerable attentions. The correlation matrix formalism and concept of multifractality are used to study temporal aspects of the Ukraine Stock Market evolution. Random matrix theory (RMT) is carried out using daily returns of 431 stocks extracted from database time series of prices the First Stock Trade System index (www.kinto.com) for the ten-year period 1997-2006. We find that a majority of the eigenvalues of C fall within the RMT bounds for the eigenvalues of random correlation matrices. We test the eigenvalues of C within the RMT bound for universal properties of random matrices and find good agreement with the results for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices—implying a large degree of randomness in the measured cross-correlation coefficients. Further, we find that the distribution of eigenvector components for the eigenvectors corresponding to the eigenvalues outside the RMT bound display systematic deviations from the RMT prediction. We analyze the components of the deviating eigenvectors and find that the largest eigenvalue corresponds to an influence common to all stocks. Our analysis of the remaining deviating eigenvectors shows distinct groups, whose identities correspond to conventionally identified business sectors. Comparison with the Mantegna minimum spanning trees method gives a satisfactory consent. The found out the pseudoeffects related to the artificial unchanging areas of price series come into question We used two possible procedures of analyzing multifractal properties of a time series. The first one uses the continuous wavelet transform and extracts scaling exponents from the wavelet transform amplitudes over all scales. The second method is the multifractal version of the detrended fluctuation analysis method (MF-DFA). The multifractality of a time series we analysed by means of the difference of values singularity stregth (or Holder exponent) ®max and ®min as a suitable way to characterise multifractality. Singularity spectrum calculated from daily returns using a sliding 250 day time window in discrete steps of 1. . . 10 days. We discovered that changes in the multifractal spectrum display distinctive pattern around significant “drawdowns”. Finally, we discuss applications to the construction of crushes precursors at the financial markets.
