Abstract:
The Natural Gas market in the U.S is growing rapidly with evidence that the nation has enough shale reserves to power the country for the next century. To ensure continued economic benefits through the use of this environmentally desired energy source, it becomes important to optimize the transportation network system design. Transportation through pipelines is one of the most common methods used to distribute Natural Gas from source to destination. This transportation system, consisting of pipelines, compressors and other supporting equipment, must be optimized, considering all relevant parameters to minimize cost and increase profit. The research presented here improves on the fuel cost minimization models in literature to incorporate pipeline elevation and safety requirements. A new model is proposed to consider the entire transportation network as a single system and optimize it considering all relevant parameters. The optimization model is setup as a mixed integer nonlinear program. The proposed model is used to optimize the pipeline network for a case study, evaluate the model as well as investigate design capacity and installed capacity of pipeline network.

Abstract:
Reliable measurements of the thermodynamics of the carbonate system are needed to better understand the CO2 system in natural waters. New measurements of the carbonic acid pK1* and pK2* in seawater have been made over a wide range of temperatures (1 to 50°C) and salinities. The commonly used CO2 constants of Mehrbach et al., (1973) were limited to salinities (19 to 43) and temperatures (2 to 35°C). They cannot be used to study estuarine or fresh waters. The results of these measured pK1* and pK2* values are in good agreement with those determined using the Miami Pitzer equations (Millero and Pierrot, 1998). The results in this dissertation can be demonstrates the validity of the model that can be used to study the carbonate system in most natural waters. The so called Miami model is presently being used to examine the effect of ocean acidification on natural waters. The boric acid effect on the dissociation constants in seawater and NaCl solutions was tested. The addition of boric acid has little or no effect on pK1* values. However, the values of pK2*, decreases with the addition of small amounts of boric acid to ASW in agreement with the work of Mojica-Prieto and Millero, (2002). The addition of larger concentrations of boric acid cause the values of pK2* to increase. These effects have been attributed to the interactions of boric acid with the carbonate ion (CO32-) in seawater (Mojica-Prieto and Millero, 2002). The addition of boric acid to NaCl solutions in contrast, caused the values of pK1* and pK2* to decrease. This has been attributed to the interactions of borate ions with Mg2+ and Ca2+ in seawater. Further measurements in Na-Mg-Cl and Na-Ca-Cl solutions are needed to prove that this is the case. The boric acid effect on the carbonate constants indicate that an increase in boric acid has no affect on pK1*, but does change the values of pK2*. At low concentrations of boric acid, pK*2 decreases, and at higher concentrations it increases. These results indicate that boric acid has some ionic interactions with the carbonate ion. Similar studies in NaCl indicate that both pK1* and pK2* decrease when boric acid is added. The differences between seawater and NaCl may be related to the interactions of Mg2+ and Ca2+ with borate anions. Further studies of NaCl with additions of MgCl2 and CaCl2 are needed to examine the effects in detail. Preliminary studies on the effect of DOC on the carbonate constants are not definitive. The change of the DOC concentration from 50 to 100 µmol kg-1 has little effect on the values of pK1* and pK2*. Dilutions of seawater with artificial seawater are complicated by changes in the concentration of boric acid. Earlier studies indicated that DOC may cause the 8 mu-mol kg-1 increase in total alkalinity of seawater needed to balance the thermodynamics of the system (Millero et al., 2002). This may be partially due to the new values for the B/Cl ratio in seawater found by Lee et al., (2010) that increases the TA by ~ 6 µmol kg-1. Further studies are needed to examine the effect of humic compounds in estuarine waters on the carbonate system. Measurements of pH or pCO2 along with TA and TCO2 can be used to separate the effect of organic ligands on TA. If DOC measurements are also made, one can relate the effect to organic ligands that can accept a proton. The cruises in the Little Bahama Banks show for the first time the active precipitation of CaCO3 (Bustos-Serrano et al., 2009). This causes measured decreases of TA, TCO2 and pH and increases in pCO2 in the whitings. This is in contrast to earlier studies on the Grand Bahama Banks where no active precipitation of CaCO3 was every found (Morse et al., 2003; Millero et al., 2005). The differences appear to be due to the movement of fresh saturated seawater from the Gulf Stream into the LBB. The Gulf Stream water enters the GBB in the winter, and the precipitation occurs on the suspended sediment over the year. Observations are needed on the Grand Bahama Banks in the winter and throughout the year to prove that this is the case.

Abstract:
According to various studies, the effects of climate change will be a danger to ecosystems and the population, especially in coastal areas, increasing the risk of floods. Authorities are taking action to prevent future disasters using traditional engineering solutions. These solutions can have high environmental and economic costs, fixing the coastline, increasing the salinization of aquifers, and can be subject to failure mechanisms. For this reason, studies were made to use natural engineering solutions for coastal protection, instead of traditional solutions, to achieve the UN SDGs. Coastal ecosystems have the natural ability to repair and restore themselves, increasing soil elevation, and attenuating waves. One of these solutions is the Double Dyke System, consisting of creating a salt marsh between the first dyke and a second inland. The goal is to protect the coasts and to restore ecosystems. The purpose of this study is to compare the costs of natural engineering solutions with traditional ones. It is assumed that these solutions may be more effective and less expensive in the long run. For this evaluation, a suitability analysis of the polders in the Dutch Zeeland region to assess the costs and benefits under different SLR scenarios was made. A saline intrusion model was also created to analyze the effects of a salt marsh on the aquifers. From the analyzes conducted, the implementation of the DDS turns out to be the cheapest coastal defense system in all SLR scenarios. The presence of a salt marsh could also have a positive impact on the prevention of saline intrusion in the various scenarios considered. The DDS could have a positive economic and environmental impact in the long term, reducing the investment costs for coastal defense and bringing important benefits for the protection of man and nature. Despite the results, more studies are needed on the efficiency of this defense system and on the economic evaluation of non-marketable ecosystem services.

Abstract:
The current research on non-migratory antiozonant systems for natural rubber follows a tripartite study involving the formulation of a coating compound with static and dynamic ozone testing of the coatings, a review of some commercial in-mould coating techniques and analysis of diffusion of a commercial antiozonant through a coating. An outline of the mixing of Nipol 1312, a low molecular weight nitrile butadiene rubber grade produced by leon Chemicals Inc., with other ingredients to produce a coating composition is also given. Test pieces of the natural rubber substrate were placed in pre-coated mould cavities and cured under compression to achieve covulcanisation between the substrate and the coating. All ozone tests were carried out under standard ASTM DI149-911D518-91 conditions. Results show that the formulated nitrile rubber coating compound is able to protect natural rubber from ozone attack with no migration of the antiozonant as in classical chemical antiozonant systems. An up to date patent search on in-mould coating techniques and systems was carried out and evaluated in conjunction with some current commercial coating methods. In this overview, more emphasis is laid on the nature of the coating material which subsequently determines the appropriate coating technique, than on the specific in-mould coating process applied. Post-mould coating work with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on natural rubber substrate was also assessed. An experimental and theoretical study of the diffusion of the antiozonant N,Isopropyl N-phenyl-pphenylenediamine (IPPD) through a protective coating on a natural rubber substrate is made in the project. This study shows that the protective coating is able to reduce the loss of antiozonant through diffusion while giving the rubber adequate protection from ozone. The study also demonstrates that the combination of a commercial antiozonant and a protective coating gives enhanced product service life and provides protection to damaged regions of the coating.

With the increased use of computerized databases, the ability to allow users to access information using natural language is becoming more desirable. There are many natural language systems in existence today. The main problem with these systems is the amount of expertise and effort required to adapt them to a new domain. The design of a portable natural language front-end to a relational database is described in this thesis. It is designed so that a typical Database Administrator can implement a new domain in a reasonable amount of time. Database portability has been achieved by separating the domain dependent natural language definitions from the domain independent definitions. These domain dependent definitions are specified in the database schema, which is structured to extract the semantics contained in the structure of the actual database. A rich supply of standard definitions are available to both aid in the development of the database schema and to help force consistency amongst database domains.

Abstract:
A cornerstone in the industry's ongoing digital revolution, which is sometimes referred to as Industry 4.0, is the ability to trace products not only within the own production line but also throughout the remaining lifetime of the products. Traditionally, this is done by labeling products with, for instance, bar codes or radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. In recent years, using the structure of the product itself as a unique identifier, a "fingerprint", has become a popular area of research. The purpose of this work was to develop software for an identification system using laser speckles as a unique identifier of steel components. Laser speckles, or simply speckles, are generated by illuminating a rough surface with coherent light, typically laser light. As the light is reflected, the granular pattern known as speckles can be seen by an observer. The complex nature of a speckle pattern together with its sensitivity to changes in the setup makes it robust against false-positive identifications and almost impossible to counterfeit. Because of this, speckles are suitable to be used as unique identifiers. In this work, three different identification algorithms have been tested in both simulations and experiments. The tested algorithms included one correlation-based, one method based on local feature extraction, and one method based on global feature extraction. The results showed that the correlation-based identification is most robust against speckle decorrelation, i.e changes in the speckle pattern, while being quite computationally expensive. The local feature-based method was shown to be unfit for this current application due to its sensitivity to speckle decorrelation and erroneous results. The global feature extraction method achieved high accuracy and fast computational speed when combined with a clustering method based on overlapping speckle patterns and a k-nearest neighbours (k-NN) search. In all the investigated methods, parallel calculations can be utilized to increase the computational speed.

Increase of indoor temperature compared with outdoor temperature is a major concern in modern house design. Occupants suffer from this uncomfortable condition because of overheating indoor temperature. Poor passive design causes heat to be trapped, which Influences the rise in indoor temperature. The upper part, which covers the area of the roof, is the most critical part of the house that is exposed to heat caused by high solar radiation and high emissivity levels. During day time, the roof accumulates heat, which increases the indoor temperature and affects the comfort level of the occupants. Our aim is to provide cooling effect by arrangement of electric fan and Copper pipe with minimum cost. Our second aim is to drop the room temperature by 6-8 Degree Celsius.
