Abstract:
The article explores the patterns of form making in architecture through the prism of archetypes and archetypal images. Ancient civilizations’ spatial form making is considered in the context of the general system of archetypal images that are the source of meaning formation in an artificial environment. The main advantage of the article is the delimitation of the architectural archetype and the archetypal images in architecture. In this context, the article studies various options for spatial archetypes of the urban environment at the macro and micro levels. The House and the Temple are considered as the fundamental archetypes in architecture. The authors determine the role and place of form making in the contemporary cultural situation.However, there is noted that the spatial archetypes are a broader concept than just the application field of the architectural archetype. Thus, the article reveals the hierarchy of this cultural phenomenon in the spatial arts. As is often the case in the field of art, it is difficult to draw a clear line between the archetypal and spatial images. The tower, being a perfect example of the architectural archetype, is simultaneously considered by us as a spatial archetype.The article notes the possibility of a new archetypal image emergence in modern Russia, the general cultural situation of which can be characterized as extremely volatile and ambiguous. Does this suggest creating other archetypal images or just abandoning the traditional ones replacing them with pro-Western patterns? In any case, there is a possibility of creating new mo­dels and images that determine the emergence and development of a new paradigm in the period of global transformations. When creating a new image in culture and art, the archetypes of artistic form making, as well as in its traditional version, leave their imprint on the appearance of the material and spatial environment. The emergence of a new dominant image in the space of Russian architecture and environmental design is determined not only by its creative potential, but also by economic and political reasons, as, for example, in the case of creating a comfortable environment of buildings’ yards. Meanwhile, the yards in Russian culture, in our opinion, can claim the status of an archetype.We can assume that everyone will remain keeping some ideal space of their own interpretation, associated with their childhood memories, and that is why it is so important for us to preserve the paternal house with its adjacent territory for gaining some psychological comfort. The House and the Temple in this context are almost equal.

Abstract:
The paper reveals the structure, properties and main functions of modern political myth, in addition, it analyzes the relationship between modern and archaic myths. The basis of modern political myths is rationalized and expressed in symbolic form mythological archetype. Despite the fact that archaic mythology as an integral system of worldview is rationalized, desacralized and destroyed, mythological archetypes retain their social significance. That is, political myths are the result of rationalization and symbolic interpretation of mythological archetypes. The article describes the main symbols-archetypes being invariably present in political discourse. For example, the hero archetype symbol is used to create heroic political myths. This group of myths is necessary for the formation of the image of a political leader. The representation of a political leader in accordance with the symbol-archetype of the hero significantly increases his capabilities and powers. The symbol-archetype of the Golden age is used to construct the image of the ideal social and political system. This archetype is especially actively exploited in various utopian and revolutionary projects. The symbol-archetype of the Great Mother, also actively used by modern mythology, forms ideas about their native land and country creating a sense of unity and cohesion. Since archetypal symbols retain their social significance, political myths, by reproducing them, perform important social functions. Shaping a special symbolic and semantic reality modern myths perform the main function – meaning making. Modern political myths carry out their functions by acting on the unconscious level, thereby causing certain emotional experiences and pushing the masses to the required actions. Thus, it can be concluded that political myths are an integral component of modern social and political practice.

Current dynamic business environment forces managers to apply various tools in order to improve organisational performance and effectiveness. System archetypes enable to cope with complexity and make appropriate decisions. This study is theoretically grounded in the field of economic cybernetics and system archetype analysis. It applies qualitative research on the sample of 54 managers with the high level of seniority. The aim is to reveal whether system archetypes are effectively used in practice. Two hypotheses focused on both knowledge about and application of system archetypes are tested. The results prove that there are inconsistencies tied to forms of system archetypes insight and knowledge. Moreover, there is an inadequate level of attention identified in investigated organisations. Results imply various potential research pathways that are outlined in the final section of the paper. Hence, the manuscript offers a unique insight into the current state of practical system archetypes utilisation and contributes to the explanation of the role of system archetypes in the economic cybernetics framework.

The author substantiates conceptual and methodological principles based on a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical and scientific status of sociological archetypology within the system of modern socio-humanitarian knowledge. These principles are represented in the conceptual system comprising the following central provisions: general orientation of scientific research in the area of sociological archetypology on society as a collective subject, whose vital activity at the implicit level of the collective unconscious is primarily determined by archetypes; the dialectic character of transformations within conceptual and methodological foundations of sociological archetypology through the integration of new components, among which the most significant innovative potential is displayed by the concept of G. Durand involving the need to update the traditional methodology (in particular, through substantiation of methodological psychology and the method of convergence) and introduce into the research discourse additional archetypal symbols (theriomorphic, nyctomorphic, catamorphic, diaeretic, inversion, light-visual and cyclic symbols); methodological parity of ontological and epistemological functions of archetypes; and methodological revision of key concepts and ideas of sociological archetypology from the standpoint of contemporary postmodern sociology, characterized by the actualization of research interest in traditional culture at a new theoretical level (M. Maffesoli). The paper explains theoretical and interpretive trends of modern sociological archetypes, among which the leading ones are the following: polysemy of “archetype” as a concept and debatable interpretation of its definition markers; broad functionality of the concept “archetype”, which represents the trend of research interest actualization in traditional culture; intensification of the national researchers’ interest in deep archetypal foundations of the Ukrainian culture and mentality and in sociological analysis of modernity, mainly to diagnose transformational changes in Ukrainian consciousness and study the psycho-social foundations of contemporary postmodern civilizational identity, which reflects the theoretical continuity of traditional and postmodern interpretation of the essence of the archetype, starting with the Jungian conceptual paradigm; the promotion in the scientific publications of an analytical approach based on the understanding the archetype as the name of a particular type of personality in personology.

Abstract:
The article discusses the figurative and semantic paradigms of the sophiological myth in the story by V.P. Astafyev “The Shepherd and the Cowgirl”. The image of the main character of the story Lucy is endowed with a number of symbolic connotations and has a complex archetypal structure. The Sophian archetype is represented here in its two invariants: the Christian and the Gnostic; the keys to understand the heroine are also the Theotokos archetype, the archetypes of the Virgin, the Beloved, the Mistress, Psyche, and the Kabbalistic archetype Shekhinah, which is closely related to the original image of Sophia. The Sophian model of a feminine principle is reflected both in the personality-psychological, spiritual and moral characteristics of the heroine, and in the logic of the image of her fate. The study leads to the conclusion that the mythologeme of Sophia in its different modes (Sophia the Wisdom of God, Sophia the Gnostic, Eternal Femininity) in the paradigm of Lucy's image is one of the semantic dominants; in addition, in the mythopoetic sign system of the work, the Sophian archetype, along with the archetypes of Theotokos and Shekhinah, can be considered the cultural representative of the “feminine” archetype - the archetype of a Woman in its specific gender-existential aspect.

Abstract:
Purpose – Tourism has become one of the world's major industries measured in terms of turnover, the number of employees and foreign currency earnings, having at the same time a huge impact on the environment. However, the future development of tourism depends on today's decisions that often do not take into account the positive and the negative impact on the tourism destinations' environment with long-term consequences that are not easily undone. System archetypes are generic structures that are responsible for generic patterns of behavior over time, especially behavior that is counterintuitive. The article aims to explore the possible use of system archetypes in order to increase socially responsible (SR), i.e. systemic thinking and behavior of tourism business organizations, based on the requisite holism theory. Design/methodology/approach – The experimental design methodology has been used in order to test the assumption that individuals familiar with the system archetypes will be more likely to believe that tourism business organizations that operate in tourism destinations should be involved in attaining SR goals. Participants included managers, public authorities and community representatives and were divided into an experiment and a control group. The experiment group was exposed to a workshop on system archetypes, while the control group had no treatment. Structured quantitative interviews were used in order to test differences in attitudes and beliefs on SR of tourism business organizations among the experiment and the control group members. Findings – Natural environment of tourism destinations as tourism's essential resource is often destroyed due to the lack of SR. The research results indicate that the exposure of individuals to system archetypes increased the understanding of importance of SR behavior of tourism business organizations. System archetypes increased individuals' comprehension of the fact that the non-linear causal relationship, time delay and hidden structures of the systems generate complex behavior resulting in damage to the natural environment of tourism destinations. Research limitations/implications – The survey research on a restricted number of subjects was applied. In order to overcome limitations of such an approach, the rigor procedure for data collection and analysis was used. Practical implications – Managers of tourism business organizations could use system archetypes to analyse the impact of their activities on tourism destinations environment and thus improve the social responsibility of their decisions. The authors propose the formation of system archetypes and their applications repository in an organized environment to enhance understanding of SR behavior of tourism business organizations. Originality/value – The authors used experimental design in order to test whether exposure of stakeholders' to system archetypes changes their attitudes regarding SR, with the goal to increase the understanding of various conflicts that emerge from the fact that tourism depends on unspoiled environment and at the same time tourism is a potential polluter. Available literature offers no similar applications of the system archetype approach to systemic behavior via SR in tourism.

SummaryObjective: This paper aims to present the archetype modelling process used for the Health Department of Minas Gerais State, Brazil (SES/MG), to support building its regional EHR system, and the lessons learned during this process.Methods: This study was undertaken within the Minas Gerais project. The EHR system architecture was built assuming the reference model from the ISO 13606 norm. The whole archetype development process took about ten months, coordinated by a clinical team co-ordinated by three health professionals and one systems analyst from the SES/MG. They were supported by around 30 health professionals from the internal SES/MG areas, and 5 systems analysts from the PRODEMGE. Based on a bottom-up approach, the project team used technical interviews and brainstorming sessions to conduct the modelling process.Results: The main steps of the archetype modelling process were identified and described, and 20 archetypes were created.Lessons learned:– The set of principles established during the selection of PCS elements helped the clinical team to keep the focus in their objectives;– The initial focus on the archetype structural organization aspects was important;– The data elements identified were subjected to a rigorous analysis aimed at determining the most suitable clinical domain;– Levelling the concepts to accommodate them within the hierarchical levels in the reference model was definitely no easy task, and the use of a mind mapping tool facilitated the modelling process;– Part of the difficulty experienced by the clinical team was related to a view focused on the original forms previously used;– The use of worksheets facilitated the modelling process by health professionals;– It was important to have a health professional that knew about the domain tables and health classifications from the Brazilian Federal Government as member in the clinical team.Conclusion: The archetypes (referencing terminology, domain tables and term lists) provided a favorable condition for the use of a controlled vocabulary between the central repository and the EMR systems and, probably, will increase the chances of preserving the semantics from the knowledge domain. Finally, the reference model from the ISO 13606 norm, along with the archetypes, proved sufficient to meet the specificities for the creation of an EHR system for basic healthcare in a Brazilian state.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a combination of forecasting methods that enables a holistic understanding of a future situation, given certain influencing variables by a combination of real data and expert knowledge. Design/methodology/approach The proposal combines two well-known methods: first, system archetypes that correspond to generic structures, allowing us to handle model management issues, and second, system dynamics that offers technical support on a computational level to assess different scenarios or problem solutions. Findings The case study considers the situation of the mining industry in Chile and its related variables, including four different scenarios. Based on the proposed methodology, the results indicate that: first, the price of copper is paramount for the industry and its effects are not limited to company profits; second, a long period of downfall in copper prices could halt exploration and development projects. Research limitations/implications Systemic archetypes are still a subject of research and their application in different fields of knowledge continues to increase to improve this simulation approach. Practical implications The case study illustrates the combination of a Vester matrix and initial system archetype models that are enriched using the system dynamics approach. Indeed, the case study aims to understand the consequences of different scenarios based on the problem-driven approach provided by Vester. Social implications The goal of prospective studies of large-scale and complex situations is to model the real situation to obtain solutions that may enhance social welfare. Originality/value The proposed methodology contributes to the existing literature by integrating techniques such as the Vester matrix, system archetype modelling and system dynamics simulation, all of which were proposed previously in the literature as independent techniques.

Transdisciplinary focused work concentrates on the possibilities of the application of the system thinking in the various science branches. Out of system disciplines it studies in detail the system dynamics -- specifically Archetypes (general structures). Introduction to the general system theory can be found in the first section of the theoretical part. Next sections are more particular and refer to the main ideas of system dynamics and Archetypes. Next part of the work focuses on common methods of the economic analysis. Apart from their brief description there is also discussion about their main theoretical flaws. The economic analysis of the specific socio-economic issue (road speed limits) is performed in the last part of the work and it includes substantial usage of the Archetypes and general system-thinking attitude. Primary aim of this part is to confirm or disprove the hypothesis of the utility of Archetypes in the economic analysis.

Water and energy are two of the most important resources for societal prosperity and economic development. It is clear that water and energy are intrinsically linked together and depend on one another in modern society. To date, however, efforts on water-energy nexus concentrate on quantifying the energy use in water cycle or the water use in energy production. From management perspective, water and energy are still managed separately. Little work has been done to investigate the impacts of the management options associated with one resource on the other and examine the integrated water and energy management options. Accordingly, the overall goal of this study is to examine the integrated management options for long-term regional water and energy resources management with consideration of their interactions through a system dynamics approach. System dynamics is based on systems thinking, which focuses on the system structure and offers a deeper insight into problems. It can link ecological, human, and social elements of water and energy systems in one modeling platform to investigate their interactions A four-step system dynamics modeling process was used in this study, which includes problem articulation, model formulation, model testing, and scenario design and simulation. Tampa Bay region was chosen as the study area, which is located on the west central coast of Florida and estuary along the Gulf of Mexico. This study considered a 100-year time scale with monthly interval, the first 30 years of which are used for model validation and the rest of which are for simulation. In order to investigate the interrelationship between water and energy systems, two sub-models (i.e., water sub-model and energy sub-model) were developed first. The water sub-model is composed of sectoral water demand (agriculture, industry, municipality, and energy sector), water supply (surface water, groundwater, reclaimed water, and water imports), and water quality and energy consumption associated with water supply. The result shows that surface water level increases by 1.32~1.39% when considering water quality and 1.10~1.30% considering both water quality and energy consumption. There is a slight decrease in groundwater storage (0.02~0.08%) compared with the reference behavior. The result also reveals that water conservation education is the most effective option to reduce the freshwater withdrawals (~17.3%), followed by rebates on indoor water-efficient appliances (~15.4%). Water loss control has a high potential to reduce freshwater withdrawals but it is not effective currently due to limited budget. The implementation of minimum surface water level reduces the surface water withdrawal by 26 MGD (million gallons per day) and requires alternative water supply sources to meet the water demands. The energy sub-model consists of sectoral energy demand (agriculture, industry, municipality, and water sector), energy supply (coal, natural gas, oil, and electricity), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and water pollution associated with energy supply. The result finds that cost of fuels is the primary concern of determining the energy mix for power generation. The current electricity mix in the study area consists of 35.4% fuels from coal, 44.6% from natural gas, and 20% from oil. When considering the environmental impacts associated with energy supply, this percentage of coal reduces to 10.6%, and GHG emissions and water pollution can be reduced by 22% and 43% accordingly. The result also shows that energy price is most effect of reducing the demand (~16.3%), followed by energy conservation education (~10.6%). Rebates on household appliances are the least effective option (~3.6%) due to consumers' low willingness to pay. Combining the supply decision incorporating environmental impacts and the demand option of energy price increase, the reductions of GHG emissions and water pollution can reach 37% and 55%, respectively. The integrated model is developed by linking the water and energy models through the interactions between water and energy systems identified by the system archetypes. The result shows that water demand is reinforced by energy demand, and vice versa. This growth, however, is limited by water and energy availability. The result also reveals that some decisions to solve the problems of one resource result in the problems of the other resource. The increase of water price is one of these, which decreases the water demand by 24.3% but leads to increase of the energy demand by 1.53% due to the use of reclaimed water. Rebates on indoor water-efficient appliances are effective to reduce both water and energy demands largely due to the household energy use in water heating. In addition, this study demonstrates that integrated management options can improve the uses of water and energy, but decisions without considering each other may lead to more issues. For example, reclaimed water, a supply management option considering the energy, can increase the water balance index by 27.3% and the energy balance index by 0.14%; it can also reduce the water pollution by 11.76% and the GHG emissions by 13.16%. Seawater desalination, a supply management option without integrated consideration, intends to decrease the water shortage but eventually increases the water balance index by 29.7%. It also causes the increases in water pollution and GHG emissions by 89.79% and 14.53%, respectively. Similarly, solar energy presents the advantage in increasing the balance indices and reducing the environmental impacts. This study is an initial attempt to link water and energy systems to explore integrated management options. It is limited by the data availability, assumptions for model simplification, and lack of consideration of climate change. This study investigates fluctuations of construction output, and growth of the output in Kenya. Fluctuation and growth of construction activity are matters of concern in construction industries of many countries in the developing as well as in the developed world. The construction industry of Kenya is therefore an exemplifying case for this phenomenon. Construction activity in Kenya fluctuates excessively and grows very slowly. This remains a big challenge to policy makers, developers, consultants and contractors in their decision-making processes. In this study, systems thinking was applied to investigate the problem of excessive fluctuations and stunted growth of construction output in Kenya. The study developed a system dynamics model to simulate the construction output problem behaviour. The historical behaviour of the construction industry was described using construction output data of a 40-year period - from 1964 to 2003. Line graphs of the historical data exhibited profiles that helped to identify the system archetypes operating in the industry. From the profiles, it was deduced that the problem of fluctuations and slow growth of construction output in Kenya is encapsulated in two system archetypes, namely: balancing process with a delay, and limits to growth. The relationship between construction output and its determinant factors from the constru ction industry's environment was investigated using time series regression, which involved autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) regression and multiple regression modelling of the output. On the basis of the historical data analysis and the system archetypes identified, a system dynamics (SD) model was developed to replicate the problem of fluctuations and slow growth in the construction output. The data used to develop the system dynamics model was annual construction output in Kenya from 1964 to 2003. The model was then used: to appraise policy changes suggested by construction industry participants in Kenya, and to project construction output in Kenya from year 2004 to year 2050, in order to establish the expected future fluctuations and growth trends of the construction output. It was observed that three fundamental changes are necessary in the system structure of the construction industry of Kenya, in order to minimize fluctuations and foster growth in construction output in the country, in the long run. The changes are: setting long-term targets of annual construction output in the industry as a whole, incorporating reserve capacity in the production process, and expanding the system st ructure to capture a larger construction market. The study recommends regulation of the response of the construction industry of Kenya to changes in construction demand in the market, and expansion of the construction industry's market into the African region and beyond.

Today's digital products, services and experiences need to be designed with accessibility in mind in order to provide equal opportunities in use and enjoyment for the growing group of users with permanent, temporary and situational impairments. However, the topic still seems to be an afterthought in practice. With the research question 'What are the enablers and inhibitors for integrating accessibility into digital design processes from a systemic perspective?', this thesis aims to identify factors that drive or hinder accessibility efforts among design practitioners in Germany and how these factors may interrelate. Accessibility integration is therefore defined as a system. The research is based on a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with four UX Designers, two UI Designers and one Chief Creative Officer with varying experiences regarding accessibility in past projects. By conducting a content analysis, the responses are grouped into categories and further visualized in the form of system archetypes to understand systemic behavior. The findings indicate that integration of accessibility into digital design processes is influenced by many enabling and inhibiting factors, of technical, individual, societal, institutional, regulatory, economic and financial as well as cliental and organizational nature, turning the topic into a complex, wicked problem. While economic reasons were a dominant force driving the system's behavior, it appears that the underlying mental models of all actors involved are significantly contributing to the state of accessibility in design practice.

The main focus is on the spiritual component of African historical religions and Africana spirituality. The spiritual component, considering its level of transcendence in the human being, is essential in the formation of the identity since it allows the creation of moral archetypes that can be recognized in literary creations. The research uses Ifá philosophy, Yoruba mythology, and Africana religions, as signifying systems. The research considers the religious foundations of the Ewe-Fon, Kongo and especially, Yoruba traditions, with a focus on the Yoruba Oracle as Literary Corpus as well as the basis for the analysis of the following novels: Of Love and other Demons by Gabriel García Márquez, Changó, the biggest badass by Manuel Zapata Olivella, Ecué Yamba Ó by Alejo Carpentier, The red of his shadow by Mayra Montero and Gabriela, clove and cinnamon by Jorge Amado. This project establishes that the moral philosophy, implicit in the divinatory system of the Yoruba people, known as Ifá, can be traced through the literary structures of Caribbean literature and can be used as a reference for transnational identity in the Caribbean.

Ett problem med elektroniska patientjournalsystem är att arkitekturen för patientjournalerna inte är gemensam vilket försvårar automatiskt utbyte av patientdata. En arkitektur har skapats inom ett projekt som heter openEHR. Förhoppningen är att denna arkitektur ska klara av automatiskt utbyte av patientdata mellan elektroniska patientjournalsystem.

I openEHRs arkitektur används något som kallas arketyper. Arketyper är återanvändbara modeller för att begränsa, strukturera och förklara vad som lagras i elektroniska patientjournaler som bygger på denna arkitektur. Istället för att områdesspecifik information, som vad ett blodtryck är, skapas i systemet flyttas den och annan liknande kunskap ut från systemarkitekturen och in i arketyperna. Arketyper kan skapas och redan existerande arketyper förändras utan att några ändringar i systemarkitekturen behöver göras.

Huvudproblemet i examensarbetet har varit att hitta en metod för att generera ett grafiskt gränssnitt utifrån en elektronisk patientjournal som är konstruerad med hjälp av arketyper. För att lösa detta behövdes det först skapas arketyper och ett system för att generera journaler utifrån dessa. Därefter har en webbportal utvecklats där det går att logga in och läsa de skapade patientjournalerna. Metoden för att generera gränssnittet i webbsidorna använder sig av en rekursiv funktion för att samla in information ur patientjournalerna. Funktionen lagrar den insamlade information i en objektstruktur som följer designmönstret Composite. Utifrån denna struktur går det sedan att generera ett grafiskt gränssnitt.

Webbportalen kan användas för att demonstrera hur ett system kan se ut där både patienter och behörig personal får tillgång till och möjlighet att läsa inlagda journaler som bygger på openEHRs arkitektur.


One problem with electronic health record systems is that the health records are not built on a common architecture. This makes automatic exchange of patient data difficult. openEHR is a project that has developed an architecture that tries to solve this problem.

The openEHR architecture uses something called archetypes. Archetypes are reusable models that limit, structure and explain what will be stored in the electronic health record that is built on this architecture.

The main goal of this master thesis has been to find a method to generate a graphical user interface from an electronic health record created using archetypes. To solve this problem first archetypes and a system that generates health records from these had to be created. Then a Web portal has been developed that displays the generated health records.

The Web portal can be used to demonstrate the graphical user interface of a system where both patients and authorized personnel can read patient records that are bases on the openEHR architecture.

AbstractIn the face of global food and nutrition crises, incremental adjustment in existing technology is not enough; the future of food systems hinges on innovative solutions that can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Innovative approaches and opportunities for the transformation of food systems exist. ‘Innovations’ includes new products, business models, policy practices, technologies, behavioral insights, or ways of delivering products and services that benefit the poor in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These include the innovative use of technology, the reallocation of government expenditure, and the promotion of more nutritious diets. However, scaling these innovations requires capital and platforms to connect stakeholders and facilitate the transfer of technology and know-how. It is here that food system innovation hubs have a key role to play. This chapter draws attention to the role that food system innovation hubs can play in creating healthy, resilient and inclusive communities in LMICs. Eight different archetypes of food innovation hubs are described, and the opportunities for these hubs to deliver planet-friendly nutritious and safe foods are explored. These archetypes include science and technology parks, research centers, incubators, accelerators, advanced development spaces, innovation districts, virtual hubs and nodes. Food system innovation hubs can provide transformative solutions to food systems by bringing the right innovations to market faster in a cost-effective manner.

AbstractAchieving a circular economy (CE) requires collaboration between diverse stakeholders, which often happens in socio-technical ecosystem settings, where complementary stakeholders can pursue the system-level goal of improving circularity. The stakeholders, as well as the ecosystem settings in which they collaborate, are diverse, which might impact the process of how stakeholders can be engaged in the CE goals. Thus, to achieve CE goals, different stakeholder engagement processes are needed in different ecosystem settings. Bringing together stakeholder engagement, the ecosystem approach, and CE research as our theoretical background, we address the considerable lack of empirical case research on stakeholder engagement processes by analysing six critical topical CE ecosystem cases in Finland: two at the regional level (a local environmental issue and an industrial collaboration), three at the national level (nutrient recycling, the construction sector, and beverage packaging recycling), and one at the global level (a sustainable fast-food business). Based on a detailed case analysis, we conceptualised four stakeholder engagement process archetypes to achieve CE goals. We propose a model that shows how stakeholders are engaged in different CE ecosystem settings depending on the ecosystem structure and the alignment of stakeholder interests with achieving the CE system-level goal. The model and archetypes contribute to the theory and can benefit organisations and managers engaging stakeholders in emerging or established CE ecosystems.

Abstract When designing engineered systems, the potential for unintended consequences of design policies exists despite best intentions. The effect of risk factors for unintended consequences are often known only in hindsight. However, since historical knowledge is generally associated with a single event, it is difficult to uncover general trends in the formation and types of unintended consequences. In this research, archetypes of unintended consequences are learned from historical data. This research contributes toward the understanding of archetypes of unintended consequences by using machine learning over a large data set of lessons learned from adverse events at NASA. Sixty-six archetypes are identified because they share similar sets of risk factors such as complexity and human-machine interaction. To validate the learned archetypes, system dynamics representations of the archetypes are compared to known high-level archetypes of unintended consequences. The main contribution of the paper is a set of archetypes that apply to many engineered systems and a pattern of leading indicators that open a new path to manage unintended consequences and mitigate the magnitude of potentially adverse outcomes.

Objectives: The overall goal of the project was to build an ultrastructural model of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens type IV secretion system (T4SS) based on electron microscopy, genetics, and immunolocalization of its components. There were four original aims: Aim 1: Define the contributions of contact-dependent and -independent plant signals to formation of novel morphological changes at the A. tumefaciens polar membrane. Aim 2: Genetic basis for morphological changes at the A. tumefaciens polar membrane. Aim 3: Immuno-localization of VirB proteins Aim 4: Structural definition of the substrate translocation route. There were no major revisions to the aims, and the work focused on the above questions. Background: Agrobacterium presents a unique example of inter-kingdom gene transfer. The process involves cell to cell transfer of both protein and DNA substrates via a contact-dependent mechanism akin to bacterial conjugation. Transfer is mediated by a T4SS. Intensive study of the Agrobacterium T4SS has made it an archetypal model for the genetics and biochemistry. The channel is assembled from eleven protein components encoded on the B operon in the virulence region of the tumor-inducing plasmid, plus an additional coupling protein, VirD4. During the course of our project two structural studies were published presenting X-ray crystallography and three-dimensional reconstruction from electron microscopy of a core complex of the channel assembled in vitro from homologous proteins of E. coli, representing VirB7, VirB9, and VirB10. Another study was published claiming that the secretion channels in Agrobacterium appear on helical arrays around the membrane perimeter and along the entire length of the bacterium. Helical arrangements in bacterial membranes have since fallen from favor however, and that finding was partially retracted in a second publication. Overall, the localization of the T4SS within the bacterial membranes remains enigmatic in the literature, and we believe that our results from this project make a significant advance. Summary of achievements : We found that polar inflations and other membrane disturbances relate to the activation conditions rather than to virulence protein expression. Activation requires low pH and nutrient-poor medium. These stress conditions are also reflected in DNA condensation to varying degrees. Nonetheless, they must be considered in modeling the T4SS as they represent the relevant conditions for its expression and activity. We identified the T4SS core component VirB7 at native expression levels using state of the art super-resolution light microscopy. This marker of the secretion system was found almost exclusively at the cell poles, and typically one pole. Immuno-electron microscopy identified the protein at the inner membrane, rather than at bridges across the inner and outer membranes. This suggests a rare or transient assembly of the secretion-competent channel, or alternatively a two-step secretion involving an intermediate step in the periplasmic space. We followed the expression of the major secreted effector, VirE2. This is a single-stranded DNA binding protein that forms a capsid around the transferred oligonucleotide, adapting the bacterial conjugation to the eukaryotic host. We found that over-expressed VirE2 forms filamentous complexes in the bacterial cytoplasm that could be observed both by conventional fluorescence microscopy and by correlative electron cryo-tomography. Using a non-retentive mutant we observed secretion of VirE2 from bacterial poles. We labeled the secreted substrates in vivo in order detect their secretion and appearance in the plant cells. However the low transfer efficiency and significant background signal have so far hampered this approach.
