Abstract:
Abstract The linguistics of the 60s and 70s did not prove to be of much help to translation and translation theory, due to the emphasis placed on languages as formal systems. However, newer directions of linguistics research which focus on the communicative function of language, such as text linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, have much to offer to translation studies. This paper shows how discourse analysis can be applied to translation and highlights some of the benefits of knowledge of linguistics and discourse analysis for the translation teacher, the student and the professional translator. In addition, it joins recent literature on translation studies and linguistics (House and Blum-Kulka 1986; Hatim and Mason 1990; Neubert and Shreve 1992; Baker 1992) in calling for a more influential role of linguistics in translation studies and translation theory. Working within discourse analysis and, in particular, syntax in discourse, i.e. discourse functions of syntactic constructions, the present study examines the discourse functions of the passive in Spanish and in English. The paper first presents a contrastive description of the textual functions of the passive in English and in Spanish based on a corpus of original texts in both languages. Then a discourse-based explanation for the differences is provided. Finally, the author examines the solutions found in translation as well as the analysis' efficiency in predicting and/or explaining such solutions.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes Yoda’s syntax order to discover the word order which occurs in his speeches and the factors affecting his preferred syntax. Data were collected from Yoda’s utterances in George Lucas’ Star Wars saga. Yoda, who speaks English, expresses his thoughts in an unusual structure which might not be recognized by the existing rules of syntax. Instead of speaking in the traditional Subject-Verb-Object syntax, Yoda speaks in Object-Subject-Verb and Verb-Object-Subject syntax. This study employs content analysis, diving into seven Star Wars movies from the Saga. Out of 169 sentences Yoda uttered, the researchers discovered three factors affecting his preference to use the unusual syntax, namely Yoda’s origin, personality and traits, and power and abilities.

Abstract:
Abstract This article unfolds what J.M. Coetzee terms “the rhythm of doubt” in Watt—a procedure that parallels cybernetic ideas about feedback and control. A careful reading of Coetzee’s doctoral dissertation, a stylostatistic analysis of Beckett’s English fiction, reveals what the young scholar and novelist labels the syntax of “A against B,” which he puts to use in his early novels. The rhythm of doubt ultimately takes on a political slant in these works, as it becomes associated with (potentially) violent actions performed in the service of perceived rationality.

A new syntax analysis method is presented, called as “left-most-derivation-and-reduction trees.” With the new way, the syntax analysis is carried out under the direction of the syntax trees, while in the traditional syntax analysis, the syntax tree is obtained when the analysis has finished. Furthermore, through the point of view of the “left-most-derivation-and-reduction trees”, the properties of the LR parsing method is newly surveyed and explained in an easier, simpler, and more directed way. Finally, the new way is expected to get further development in future.

Abstract:
Talking about CDA or Critical Discourse Analysis means talking about power domination, ideologies and concepts employ in certain community. The reflection of power, ideologies, concepts or event traditional values can be found easily nowadays in the entertainment section with products like movies, songs, advertising, and many more. Since the values are packed with attractive features, some people are allured with the features and forget the power that drives some people to create the products which enable them to portray their beliefs and values. This research is trying to reveal the critical aspect of the movie Spiderman (2002) which contain Christian beliefs, bias concepts in Americans humanity and heroism. The method employs in the research is descriptive analysis based on the data taken from the scenes of the movie, tagline, dialogues. The result shows that through this movie, American unveils the ideology of liberalism covered with the values of humanity and heroism to drive people into the hegemony: American is the only power domination and the source of great heroes.

Abstract:Much information about patients is stored in free text. Hence, the computerized processing of medical language data has been a well-known goal of medical informatics resulting in different paradigms. In Gottingen, a Medical Text Analysis System for German (abbr. MediTAS) has been under development for some time, trying to combine and to extend these paradigms. This article concentrates on the automated syntax analysis of German medical utterances. The investigated text material consists of 8,790 distinct utterances extracted from the summary sections of about 18,400 cytopathological findings reports. The parsing is based upon a new approach called Left-Associative Grammar (LAG) developed by Hausser. By extending considerably the LAG approach, most of the grammatical constructions occurring in the text material could be covered.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper analyses diachronic changes which result from metaphorical extension. Its aim is to assess whether such semantic shifts may lead to further semantic and syntactic differentiation between the verb senses and whether they can be described as shifts away or towards prototypical transitivity (cf. Hopper & Thompson 1980). It focusses on changes the verb derail underwent in the 19th and 20th centuries. In a corpus-based analysis, it utilises CART trees and a random forest to determine which syntactic and semantic properties differentiate literal and metaphorical uses of derail. Results reveal a syntactic shift from transitive to intransitive in the older literal construction which hardly affects the younger metaphorical one. This indicates that differentiation can be an epiphenomenon of semantic shifts.

We argue that an incorporation of this proposal into the analysis of several aspects of Haitian Creole syntax, including clause structure, question formation, and relative-clause formation, can resolve several puzzling problems. In addition, the paper adds to the theory of minor heads in that it shows that such heads must be considered to inherit major category features from their complements.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to describe errors output when pre-service mathematics teachers were writing output of the syntax that given in macro excel manually. This research is a qualitative descriptive research with 101 participants from 2nd year pre-service mathematics teachers from one of state university at Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia. Instrument used consists of one syntax that has 8 outputs when it is run and that will be analysed using Newman’s procedures. The eight outputs come from 3 types of output, namely text, numbers, and count. The result showed that the average percentage of syntax output writing errors was 87.13%. It also indicated to reading errors of 48.51%, comprehension errors of 18.81%, transformation errors of 83.17%, process skill errors of 20.79%, and encoding errors of 87.13%. Based on the result, errors occur when participants incorrectly write output and wrong in writing the result of the count. In addition, factors that caused these errors are 1) participants were not trained in providing information that was in the problem, 2) participants did not read the instructions in the problem correctly, and 3) participants did not pay attention to the suitability of syntax and output as was learned before. This research can be a reference for lecturers to develop learning about programming languages that can make students understand the use of syntax with the emphasis on manual syntax learning which will make their logic easier when applyng the syntax on a computer.

Abstract:
Background: Limited contemporary data exist regarding the impact of SYNTAX score on in-hospital outcomes undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI) in acute STEMI patients. Objectives: To evaluate the significance of the SYNTAX score for predicting in- hospital outcome after primary PCI in patient with acute STEMI. Methods: This cohort study was conducted in the department of cardiology, National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Dhaka, Bangladesh from September, 2015 to September, 2016. 42 patients with acute STEMI who underwent primary PCI were considered for the study. But 2 patients were excluded from the study due to failure of primary PCI. The patients were divided into two groups: Group I (low SYNTAX score d”22) and Group II (high Syntax score > 22). The Syntax score of all patients were calculated from an initial coronary angiogram before primary PCI. In-hospital outcome was observed in between two groups. Results: Among traditional cardiovascular risk factors diabetes was significantly more prevalent in the Group II than Group I ( 82.4% vs 34.8%, p  0.003). Angiographic profile revealed maximum (69.6% vs 17.6%) culprit lesion in LAD artery in Group I and maximum culprit lesion (64.7% vs 21.7%) in RCA in Group II, these were the statistically significant between Group I and Group II (P<0.05). The high SYNTAX score group had lower TIMI 3 (76.47% vs 91.3%, p  0.03) compared to the low SYNTAX score group. But there were no significant difference in complications as arrhythmia (2.5% vs 0%), cardiogenic shock (2.5% vs 0%), heart failure (5% vs 2.5%) and mortality (5%vs 0%) between high and low SYNTAX score. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed SYNTAX score (OR = 5.95, p  0.001) was an independent predictor of in-hospital outcome in patients under going primary PCI. Performance test of SYNTEX score in the setting of Primary PCI outcome showed positive predictive value 83%. Conclusions: SYNTAX score was an independent variable that can predict in-hospital outcomes of patients with acute STEMI undergoing primary PCI. Bangladesh Heart Journal 2018; 33(2) : 121-125

Abstract:
Space Syntax is a set of techniques for the analysis of spatial configurations of all kinds including architectural designs. Traditional Space Syntax has been devoted to analysing dynamic views of an observer moving through space, which is the case in most building spaces. However, some architectural spaces are usually experienced from static viewpoints. Consequentially, the way this space is viewed has a significant impact on the spatial cognition and experience of the occupants. Examples of such buildings where the occupant may observe spaces from mostly static points of view are religious spaces such as mosque or churches’ prayer halls. This paper presents an analysis of a typical “static space” in terms of its spatial logic. A typical configuration for a prayer hall consisting of a bilateral symmetry space with four columns is considered. This configuration is manifested in many religious buildings and is assessed using visibility graphs, axial lines as well as various isovist field properties and measures. This paper shows how the most basic alterations to the configuration of the plan can affect the spatial experience and cognition of the place. In addition, special Space Syntax measures that are relevant to the design of the static spaces are extracted and discussed as well as the consequences of an omni-visual observer of typical Space Syntax in comparison to the directional observer in a static space. The analysis presented in the paper has implications for both architectural designs of spaces with similar configurations as well as for research on Space Syntax focusing on stationary observers.

Abstract:
Cross-linguistically, personal pronouns are noted as being deficient in relation to some morphosyntactic and phonological properties. Some striking asymmetries have been identified between strong and weak personal pronouns in relation to modification, coordination/conjunction, whether they have a semantic referent, and can encode focus. This study explores the personal pronominal system of Dagbani along Cardinaletti and Starke’s (1994) typology and observed asymmetries. Using insights from published literature on Dagbani pronouns as well as my understanding as a native speaker, I argue that, unlike personal pronouns in Romance/Germanic languages, Dagbani personal pronouns can be modified by quantifiers, can be coordinated, and can occur in conjunction constructions, as well as encode topic and focus as salient semantic discourse properties. Furthermore, the pre/post verbal distinctions among nonemphatic pronominal forms in Dagbani still hold, even as these occur in coordinated and modified constructions, due to structural constraints imposed on them by coordinating conjuctions and quantifiers.

Abstract:
[Rev. of: Gradinarova Alla A., Essays on the Comparative Syntax of Bulgarian and Russian, Sofia: Iztok-Zapad, 2017, 500 pp.] This article presents a review of the book by a major Bulgarian researcher of Russian, professor of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Alla Gradinarova, whose scholarly interests focus mainly on the contrastive syntax of Bulgarian and Russian. In the new monograph, the author concentrates largely on the points of divergence in these languages stemming from their typological differences: passive voice and syntactic impersonality, word order, communicatively marked phrasal templates, various types of multi-clause structures ranging from verbal adverb phrases to complex and asyndetic sentences, etc. The contrastive analysis of the language data helps to reveal significant characteristics of the studied phenomena. This allows the use of the obtained results and data not only in typology and contrastive linguistics, but also in the study of the Russian language, as the approach of the author in her studies is based on a profound analysis of Russian data. The book constitutes a major contribution to studies in contrastive syntax of Slavic languages.

Abstract:
Existing research concludes that educators have varying levels of language knowledge. Educators’ varying levels of language knowledge may be related to the type of content knowledge they received while in school. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of pre-professional speech-language pathology (SLP) students who have taken language development coursework to pre-professional students who have not taken language development coursework on an explicit syntax knowledge task. Forty-four undergraduate and graduate students from speech language pathology, early childhood education, and education majors completed a 52 question explicit syntax knowledge task comprised of matching, counting, expressive, and receptive subtests. Pre-professional students performed the best on the expressive subtest, followed by the matching subtest, the receptive subtest, and the counting subtest. There was not a significant difference in total score, matching/counting composite score, or express/receptive composite score between pre-professional SLP students who have taken language development coursework and pre-professional students who have not taken language development coursework. The results suggest that language development coursework may not provide enough direct instruction about the structure of language, or at least not at the level that could provide pre-professional students with explicit syntax knowledge. This study contributes to the growing body of research investigating pre-professional students’ and educators’ explicit knowledge of language and the effects of coursework on that knowledge.

Abstract:
A multiple baseline design across responses was used to examine the effect of syntax training on the sentence production of 4 individuals with Chronic Broca's aphasia. Subjects were trained to produce five exemplars of five sentence types from Helm's Elicited Language Program for Syntax Stimulation (Helm-Estabrooks, 1981). Generalization and maintenance of trained sentence types to novel exemplars and novel stimulus conditions served as dependent measures. In addition, five naive judges rated subjects' responses before and following the treatment in terms of their "adequacy." Generalization to novel exemplars was demonstrated sequentially by 3 subjects (i.e., following the teaching of all five forms), and the remaining subject demonstrated generalization for three of five sentence types trained. Maintenance was variable across subjects and sentence types. Generalization across stimulus conditions was limited for all subjects Adequacy judgments revealed improved communication skills for wh-questions but limited changes in the perceived adequacy of subjects' declarative responses. These findings indicate that the effects of syntax training procedures are limited to those grammatical constructions taught, that generalization of learned forms to novel stimulus conditions is not an automatic consequence of acquisition, and that the effect of such training on the adequacy of subjects' responses may be limited.

Abstract:
Objectives To determine patient outcomes in GuideLiner facilitated percutaneous coronary intervention stratified by the SYNTAX score. Design Single centre retrospective cohort analysis. Participants A total of 540 consecutive cases facilitated by GuideLiner at a single center. Main outcome measures Successful stent delivery, in-hospital, 30 day and 1 year mortality rates stratified by SYNTAX score. Results The most common indication for GuideLiner was need for increased support for balloon or stent delivery (82%), 6% for non-coaxial guide, 9% for chronic total occlusion and 3% for selective vessel engagement. Successful stent delivery was achieved in 91% of all cases, with no complications occurred due to GuideLiner use. In-hospital, 30 day and 1 year mortality rates were 2.8%, 2.1% and 4.5%, respectively. The high SYNTAX group was associated with higher rates of initial TIMI score of 0–1; however, the final TIMI score rate of successful delivery and complications did not differ between groups. In-hospital and 1 year mortality rates were higher in the higher SYNTAX groups. Conclusions The GuideLiner is an easy to use guide catheter extension system with high rates of success and low rates of complications, across all SYNTAX groups.

Abstract:
Many approaches in syntax give a deeper chance to analyze the sentence beyond its formal structure even though those approaches focus on the issues of words category, function and role in a sentence construction. The approach of functional syntax emphasizes the sentence structure on the ‘role’ of each function in each category of words that construct the sentence. This paper analyzes simple sentence in English especially declarative sentence to describe the constituent units and the function structure of simple sentence with active voice. The analysis employs Morley’s Functional Syntax Approach to identify the function of each english active sentence element and describe the structure of a simple sentence in English. The results of analysis show that simple sentence can have a syntactic function structure ofS-P-O, S-P-C, or S-P-ACIRC with a functional role structure which is principally composed of semantic roles of the filler elements of each function in the form of participant-process-entity/thing; participant-process-quality or participant-process-feature/quality. The semantic role of the verbs in a sentence determine the elements of filler before and after the verb given in a sentence. Keywords: Functional syntax, verbs, semantic role, syntactic function.

Abstract:
Abstract City is a multi-layered structure of social, cultural, and economic aspects and their relationship through the physical space. Recognition of some patterns in those relationships is the essence for defining fragmentations in urban fabric and suggesting solutions on how those fragmentations could be solved. The article analyses how different space syntax methods can be used to find patterns in the chosen urban environment. Space syntax allows to find urban relationships between physical environment and human behavior. Space syntax suggests a few different approaches on how these relationships could be simulated: Segment Analysis perceives environment as a network of paths or streets, visibility graph analysis concentrates on inter-visual relationships, while agent-based analysis uses simple artificial intelligence for modeling movement in open space. Consequentially, the aim of this research is to find out what human behaviour aspects each of these space syntax methods are able to simulate.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper argues for the need to recognize a new order of syntactic phenomena, and for a theory of syntax capable of addressing it. Dialogic syntax encompasses the linguistic, cognitive, and interactional processes involved when speakers selectively reproduce aspects of prior utterances, and when recipients recognize the resulting parallelisms and draw inferences from them. Its most visible reflex occurs when one speaker constructs an utterance based on the immediately co-present utterance of a dialogic partner. Words, structures, and other linguistic resources invoked by the first speaker are selectively reproduced by the second. The alignment of utterances yields a pairing of patterns at varying levels of abstraction, ranging from identity of words and affixes, to parallelism of syntactic structures, to equivalence of grammatical categories and abstract features of form, meaning, and function. This mapping generates dialogic resonance, defined as the catalytic activation of affinities across utterances. The key unit of analysis is the diagraph, recognized as a higher-order, supra-sentential syntactic structure that emerges from the structural coupling of two or more utterances. Dialogic syntax goes beyond traditional linear syntax to recognize as integral to the task of syntactic analysis a new kind of structural relation that arises between otherwise independent sentences.

Abstract:
AbstractThe exact nature and derivation of patient-subject constructions (PSC) in Chinese are still at dispute in literature. Based on the restriction of manner adverbial modification and the nonexistence of the manner reading of zenme ‘how’ observed in Chinese PSC, a morphosyntactic analysis has been provided. We argue that the seeming action verb V in PSC is not a real main verb, but a verbal root to be introduced into the derivation after syntax via external morphological merger. The real main verb of PSC in syntax is a covert light verb ∅BEC, which selects a nominal phrase (NP) as its specifier (Spec) and a resultative phrase (RP) as its complement. BECP is further selected by an aspect (Asp) head le. To satisfy the extended projection principle (EPP), the NP at [Spec, BECP] moves to the [Spec, TP] in syntax. After syntax, the resultative (R) head-moves to ∅BEC at the phonological form (PF) to satisfy the phonological requirement of ∅BEC, forming R-∅BEC; then, a bare verbal root merges with R-∅BEC at PF to denote the manner of the change of state. Due to the phonological requirement of le, V-R-∅BEC head-moves to le, producing the right order of PSC. The two elided forms of PSC can be derived similarly. This research suggests that covert light verbs and morphology may play an interactive role in the derivation of some “typical” constructions in Chinese.
