Abstract:
This book sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated the Council. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of late Jansenism. Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the ultramontane nineteenth-century Church. Nevertheless, much of the Pistoian agenda—such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire Church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions—was officially promulgated at Vatican II. The career of Bishop Scipione de’ Ricci (1741–1810) and the famous Synod he convened are investigated in detail. The international reception (and rejection) of the Synod sheds light on why these reforms failed, and the criteria of Yves Congar are used to judge the Pistoian Synod as “true or false reform.” This book proves that the Synod was a “ghost” present at Vatican II. The council fathers struggled with, and ultimately enacted, many of the same ideas. This study complexifies the story of the roots of the Council and Pope Benedict XVI’s “hermeneutic of reform,” which seeks to interpret Vatican II as in “continuity and discontinuity on different levels” with past teaching and practice.

Abstract:
The Liber Pontificalis’s account of the four-day Synod of Rome in April 769 convened by Pope Stephen III is a remarkable scene of histrionic recrimination and the condemnation of Stephen’s predecessor Pope Constantine II. At a basic level, the Synod of Rome is a dramatic instance of the politics of legitimation in action. The winning faction not only created a favourable historical record for their candidate (Stephen III) by the long-recognized process of damnatio memoriae but claimed to form ‘new rules’. How political manoeuvres become law, and how law and narrative history overlap in terms of acquiring authority, therefore, are the major preoccupations of this chapter. Further, the subsequent uncritical acceptance of the Roman Synod of 769, of its agenda, the context in which it was convened, and stance adopted, in both the Liber Pontificalis and conciliar acta, to the method by which Constantine II came to occupy the throne, have all overlooked the position of Constantine himself. He was pope for nearly thirteen months, not an ‘antipope’. This chapter explores the case of Pope Constantine II in the texts relating to the Synod of Rome as well as in the light of two extant letters from Constantine II which escaped the conflagration of his Register in Rome in 769.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a case analysis of the Catholic Church’s Synod on the Family, an assembly of bishops convened in Rome in October 2014 and October 2015, to address the changing nature of Catholics’ lived experiences of marriage and family life. The chapter argues that the Synod can be considered a postsecular event owing to its deft negotiation of the mutual relevance of doctrinal ideas and Catholic secular realities. It shows how its extensive pre-Synod empirical surveys of Catholics worldwide, its language-group dialogical structure, and the content and outcomes of its deliberations, by and large, met postsecular expectations, despite impediments posed by clericalism and doctrinal politics. The chapter traces the Synod’s deliberations, and shows how it managed to forge a more inclusive understanding of divorced and remarried Catholics, even as it reaffirmed Church teaching on marriage and also set aside a more inclusive recognition of same-sex relationships.
