Abstract:
The books about Harry Potter have been read by people all over the world, but is there some-thing more to them than just the magical adventure novels they first appear to be? Many have discovered the multiple layers of understanding that the author J. K. Rowling has put in her famous books, and since I was curious about a few features in the story that reminded me of certain elements which can be found in the Bible, I decided to find out more. The following essay investigates which specific features in the books about Harry Potter that can be traced to which specific parts of the Bible. The main focus is the comparison between the character Harry Potter and Jesus Christ. I use a comparative analyzing method and secure my theory with quotes from both Harry Potter and the Bible. In the end, I found a wide range of similarities between the two characters, and in my discus-sion, I raised the question whether or not the likenesses were intentional by Rowling. I reached the conclusion that the authors intention is not as important as the reader’s interpreta-tion and what they can learn from it.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to study the confrontation between violence and truth in the revelation of john, as portrayed by the symbolic couple of the sword and word that appear in the mouth of christ, son of man. This confrontation is the mystery to be deciphed in examining the possibility of violence to be converted by truth as is the sword by the word. In the first section this theme is studied in relation to the book as a whole in the second section, the central personnage, jesus-christ, is seen in his three contradictory manifestations : son of man, lamb and "word of god" as well as king and judge. His power is illustrated by the couple of sword-word, enriched by spatial and temporal correspondances. The third section concerns the re-reading considered as a double act of comprehension and conversion. Initiated by the author of the revelation himself, his re-interpretation is renewed by each reader-auditor and actualised by contemporary events. It thus has the specific potential to link the present at once to the past and to the future and therefore to disengage the events from their particularity and contingence and to give them an umtimate and universal solution. This promised solution is based in the voctory of lamb and his followers. The victory offers a pledge of general renewal in spite of the domination of evil. The hope will be fully realized only in the future (the eschaton). It consists in the reducing of the sword into word likewise of negative violence into a "violence" of truth

Abstract:
In this essay the renewal of the modern sacred art has been examined through the creation of three works of art from the art project “Kyrkorummet”. The aim has been to show that renewal of the modern sacred art is best accomplished by the combination of the artist history and Bible knowledge and the open mindness of the beholder towards the new and creative, in order to communicate the gospel in modern time. The large extend of the art project demanded a selection of the art works. Therefore, three were chosen and they show the last supper and the baptism in a renewal way including both symbolism and creativity. To complete and facilitate the analyses, a theme, light and water, have been used as well as relevant theories in art history with Kandinsky as main art critic. Through the art project and it’s teaching, history in combination with present time through visits in different and modern churches, thoughts have been stimulated and the result has been new works of art that speaks of our time. The project has also shown that symbolism is an important aspect in the renewal of sacred art, since it communicates and reveals important truths.

Abstract:
This dissertation interprets the poems of the book of Lamentations through the study of their imagery and of the themes expressed through that imagery. The introduction places the study in the context of literary studies of biblical texts and of recent scholarship on Lamentations. The book is read in its canonical order, identifying the images and patterns of imagery which occur in each poem. Major images are compared with similar images in other biblical poetry and interpreted as to the themes which they express. Comparison of imagery which appears in several poems illustrates how the experience of the fall of Jerusalem is variously understood and expressed within the book as a whole. The poems depict the suffering and losses of the community during the siege and its aftermath, while attempting to understand what these events mean for the community's relationship with its god. The speaker of Lam 3, however, reflects on human suffering from the perspective of an individual man. The poems and the book as a whole express vividly the experience of loss and suffering. The religious meaning of the disaster remains unanswered throughout the book, with the possible exception of the first chapter, where the balance of imagery of sin and suffering suggests that the sufferers receive what they have deserved for their sins. The book as a whole both expresses loss and suffering and inquires without final resolution as to the religious meaning of the communal disaster.

Wotherspoon, Iain David. "Original sin : divine and symbolic violence in the turn to the Apostle Paul." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7331/.

Full text
Abstract:
When we take a step back from the imposing figure of physical violence, it becomes possible to examine other structurally violent forces that constantly shape our cultural and political landscapes. One of the driving interests in the “turn to Paul” in recent continental philosophy stems from wrestling with questions about the real nature of contemporary violence. Paul is positioned as a thinker whose messianic experience began to cut through the violent masquerade of the existing order. The crucifixion and resurrection of the Messiah (a slave and a God co-existing in one body) exposed the empty grounding upon which power resided. The Christ-event signifies a moment of violent interruption in the existing order which Paul enjoins the Gentiles to participate in through a dedication of love for the neighbour. This divine violence aims to reveal and subvert the “powers,” epitomised in the Roman Empire, in order to fulfil the labour of the Messianic now-time which had arrived. The impetus behind this research comes from a typically enigmatic and provocative section of text by the Slovene philosopher, cultural critic, and Christian atheist Slavoj Žižek. He claims that 'the notion of love should be given here all its Paulinian weight: the domain of pure violence… is the domain of love' (2008a, 173). In this move he links Paul’s idea of love to that of Walter Benjamin’s divine violence; the sublime and the cataclysmic come together in this seemingly perverse notion. At stake here is the way in which uncovering violent forces in the “zero-level” of our narrative worldviews aids the diagnosis of contemporary political and ethical issues. It is not enough to imagine Paul’s encounter with the Christ-event as non-violent. This Jewish apocalyptic movement was engaged in a violent struggle within an existing order that God’s wrath will soon dismantle. Paul’s weak violence, inspired by his fidelity to the Christ-event, places all responsibility over creation in the role of the individual within the collective body. The centre piece of this re-imagined construction of the Pauline narrative comes in Romans 13: the violent dedication to love understood in the radical nature of the now-time. 3 This research examines the role that narratives play in the creation and diagnosis of these violent forces. In order to construct a new genealogy of violence in Christianity it is crucial to understand the role of the slave of Christ (the revolutionary messianic subject). This turn in the Symbolic is examined through creating a literary structure in which we can approach a radical Nietzschean shift in Pauline thought. The claim here, a claim which is also central to Paul’s letters, is that when the symbolic violence which manipulates our worldviews is undone by a divine violence, if even for a moment, new possibilities are created in the opening for a transvaluation of values. Through this we uncover the nature of original sin: the consequences of the interconnected reality of our actions. The role of literature is vital in the construction of this narrative; starting with Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men, and continuing through works such as Melville’s Bartleby the Scrivener, this thesis draws upon the power of literature in the shaping of our narrative worlds. Typical of the continental philosophy at the heart of this work, a diverse range of illustrations and inspirations from fiction is pulled into its narrative to reflect the symbolic universe that this work was forged through. What this work attempts to do is give this theory a greater grounding in Paul’s letters by demonstrating this radical kenotic power at the heart of the Christ-event. Romans 13 reveals, in a way that has not yet been picked up by Critchley, Žižek, and others, that Paul opposed the biopolitical power of the Roman Empire through the weak violence of love that is the labour of the slaves of Christ on the “now-time” that had arrived.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze some biblical passages of the book of Exodus, especially situated between chapters 4-14, from the theoretical framework of magicreligious symbolism. To achieve this purpose, we will divide our research into four parts. First, we will seek to understand the meaning of the symbol, as well as its importance to the Hebrew Bible as a whole and especially to the book of Exodus. Second, we will discourse about the meaning of magic and religion, we will cover the main anthropological and sociological theories about it and then we justify the use of the compound term magical-religious in our research. Third, we will discuss on the phenomenon of the magical-religious in the Hebrew Bible. Finally, in fourth and last place, with the help of magical-religious symbolic instrumental previously constructed, we will present our translation and its exegesis of some excerpts from the book of Exodus, ranging from chapters 4 to 14. For this, we will base on the Hebrew Masoretic text present in the standard critical edition of the Tanakh, that is, the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia, edited by Karl Elliger and Wilhelm Rudolph, which is currently in its fifth edition revised. With this work we intend to contribute to the studies concerning the Hebrew Bible and especially the book of Exodus.

Chamberlain, Peter. "Moaning like a dove : Isaiah's dove texts as the background to the dove in Mark 1:10." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7916.

Full text
Abstract:
There is no consensus regarding the interpretation of the "Spirit like a dove" comparison in Jesus' baptism (Mk 1:10). Although scholars have proposed at least fifty different interpretations of the dove comparison, no study appears to have considered Isaiah's three dove texts as the background for the Markan dove (cf. Is 38:14; 59:11; 60:8). This neglect is surprising considering the abundance of Isaianic allusions in Mark's Prologue (Mk 1:1-15), and the growing awareness that Isaiah is the hermeneutical key for both the Markan Prologue and Jesus' baptism within it. Indeed, Mark connects the dove image inseparably to the Spirit's "descent" from heaven, which alludes to Yahweh's descent in a New Exodus deliverance in Isaiah 63:19 [MT]. Furthermore, each Isaianic dove text uses the same simile, "like a dove" or "like doves," which appears in Mark 1:10, and shares the theme of lament and restoration which fits the context of Mark's baptism account. This study therefore argues that the dove image in Mark 1:10 is a symbol which evokes metonymically Isaiah's three dove texts. So the Spirit is "like a dove" not because any quality of the Spirit resembles that of a dove, but because the dove recalls the Isaianic theme of lament and restoration associated with doves in this Scriptural tradition. After discussing the Markan dove in terms of simile, symbol, and metonymy, the study examines the Isaianic dove texts in the MT and LXX and argues that they form a single motif. Next, later Jewish references to the Isaianic dove texts are considered, while an Appendix examines further dove references in Jewish and Greco-Roman literature. Finally, the study argues that the Markan dove coheres in function with the Isaianic dove motif and symbolizes the Spirit's effect upon and through Jesus by evoking metonymically the Isaianic dove texts.

Schott, Sonia. Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017TOU20129.

Full text
Abstract:
The existence of the poet Karl Wolfskehl is characterised by the feeling of a double identity, for he is both Jewish and German. The two decisive moments of his poetic vocation are his meeting in 1897 with Stefan George, one of the leaders of German symbolism; he became his faithful friend and devoted disciple. This encounter allowed him to consider his poems as precious material, with no other goal than language per se. The second point is that, due to the outcome of Nazism in Germany in 1933, he had to exile himself to Italy then to New-Zealand, where he stayed until his death in 1948. This exile is at the root of an unprecedented existential crisis and of a renewal in his writing: from a quest of formal perfection he reaches a religious poetry anchored in Judaism assimilated to the persona of Job. The whole work is infused with a mystical tone. Our research aims to try to account for the relationship between poetry and religion in order to characterize the poetic art of the author. We focus on the evolutions of the notion of prophecy in the work of Wolfskehl, so as to deal with both the holderlinian heritage of poeta vates and that of the biblical prophets (Nebiim). By concentrating on the dialogical principle (Buber) and by interpreting the way the literary work transforms the symbols of the Kabbala (Scholem), we will show that the poems are the scene of a dialectic confrontation between the human and the divine, which reveals a hermeneutic of suffering. From a philosophical and historical point of view, we question the identification of the poet with Job in so far as Wolfskehl’s poetry reflects the excess of evil (Nemo) while allowing to interpret the destiny of the Jewish people (Susman)

Abstract:
The thesis consists of a thematic exploration of six sources -five textual and one oral. The textual sources are among the most influential in the Jewish tradition: the Bible, the Babylonian Talmud, Midrash Rabba, Rashi’s commentary on the Bible, and the Zohar. As for the Oral source, it consists of interviews with French and Israeli Jews, examining representations of Rachel and Lea's figures. This work addresses initially roles of the two matriarchs in the fundamental texts of the Jewish tradition it next presents study of the development of the biblical story through time and texts. After analysing recurrences of different themes of Rachel and Leah in the various sources, it then examines differences and modifications of these themes, in. Order to understand the reason and meaning of their modifications. It further inquire through interviews about the kinds of images associated with the figures of Rachel and Leah today, how they are perceived, the places they occupy in the interviewee's life, and whether they are considered part of a distant past or relevant today. Finally, it compare between the roles of the two matriarchs in contemporary Jewish society and their role in the textual sources of the Jewish tradition

Abstract:

Abstract:
Among the considerable manuscript production of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Bible moralisee stands out by the number of miniatures and by the conception of the manuscript itself. The composition and many iconographical themes recall stained glass windows of contemporary cathedrals, such as Chartres, Sens, Bourges, or Canterbury in England.
The manuscript of the Bible moralisee to which this study is partly dedicated, is located in the Treasury of the Toledo cathedral chapter in Spain. This study deals also with the duplicate copy which was realized soon afterwards. The interpretation and illustrations of the verses vary in number according to the books of the Bible. Though being one of the smallest biblical books, the Song of Solomon is given outstanding consideration, more than any other book in the Bible. The central theme--the espousal of the Bride and the Bridegroom, Christ and Ecclesia being its allegory--enjoyed a considerable success in medieval theology. It corresponded to the courtly love atmosphere of its time. Abundant commentary literature and the development of mariology made this book even more popular. About a quarter of the commentary illustrations are dedicated to the theme Christus-Ecclesia. Ecclesia, always crowned, holds the chalice which confirms her sacramental significance. In no other known iconographical medieval programme has Ecclesia such a position.
The question raised by the problematic around this Bible is the eventual intention being at the origin of this order which, without any doubt, emanates from French royalty. Has it been produced to enhance the prestige of royalty? Is it a pedagogical work intended for the education of the royal children? Was it meant to be a royal political gift? The Ecclesia theme in the Bible is the exaltation of, or an hommage to the Church, spiritual or temporal, by the French royalty of the thirteenth century.

The primary objective of this creative project is to explore the meaning and complexity of simple forms, also referred to as symbols. The project examines symbols that interest me. These symbols may be found in various cultures and subcultures throughout the world. I also designed symbols to describe weather phenomena.I have provided a thematic interpretation of my work, focusing on the themes of identity and spirituality. When people view my work they may have multiple interpretations, but a thematic explanation of each piece also provides information for the viewer to ponder. The paper also includes a discussion of work by other artists and ideas that have informed and developed my prints. This body of work required traditional printmaking techniques such as: intaglio, deep etching, chine cone, color printing and photomechanical transfer using imagON photopolymer film.

Abstract:
Symbolism of the Apparition of Leon Bloy is at the origin of his whole work. The shadows of our knowledge about the genesis and the writing of this text require light on the historical factors of this unfinished project and the influences received by the author. The tutelary figure of father Tardif de Moidrey exerts on him the most important influence, in addition to Ernest Hello and Anne -Marie Roulé. A historical research helps to enlighten the reasons for his profound influence on Bloy and the guidelines of his thoughts on a few major themes : a genealogical view of history, the reference to the Middle Ages, the repair through sacrifice and the hope of the « return » of the Jews and of the fulfillment of the prophecies. The authority of the Summa Theologica brings to these themes a philosophical basis, and the cult of Mary gathers them all. Tardif has transmitted to Bloy the idea of applying the symbolic exegesis to the apparitions of the Virgin. This exegesis itself is interpreted in an historical perspective, as well as the Mariology, that Symbolism of the Apparition reflects and extends

Abstract:
Presently the video game industry uses a number of methods to lead the players though the games such as colours, lights and shapes. This thesis focuses on shapes and tries to answer the question: In choosing between basic symbols is there a particular symbol that players prefer tofollow and what do they associate with that symbol? In order to answer this question we created an experiment in which we tested how test subjects respond to three primitive shapes, triangles, circles and squares. The experiment consisted of a corridor with a door in one end, acting as the controls tutorial, and a room with three doors which was the actual experiment. Our test shows that there is not a certain symbol that the test subjects prefer to follow, but that the associations to the symbols seem to be true in comparison to earlier made studies on what these symbols are viewed to represent. This points at the possibility that the symbols can be used in game design to convey messages to the players and be used to guide the players in new environments.

Abstract:
How can the Bible use such expressions as “bride” about the Church, or “Bridegroom” about God or Christ? How can we understand these? We had to precise the original meaning of “symbol”. Bible then shows how Christ, becoming one with the Church, have an impact on every single human marriage. However, this study also revealed how strange the present non-symbolic reading of the bible could be. How did this happen? The Church Fathers were well aware of symbolic. Ef 5 was a sufficient base to establish marriage’s holiness. Why then did it fade? We give some hypothesis. It’s only with the prophetic openings of Paul VI and John Paul II’s pontifical teaching that we could find some symbolic traces. On the other side, the “real symbol”’s tool, well understood, showed its efficiency to qualify these openings. This research allowed us to clarify John Paul II’s theology of the body’s biblical foundations, especially to ascertain the new efficiency Christ brought to the marriage

Abstract:
According to Onkvisit and Shaw (1987), many products and possessions can be perceived as extensions of consumers' self-identity.  Some consumers might even try to enhance their image through conspicuous or status consumption. According to Mosteller (2008), possessing a pet is closely related to the theory of the extended self. Among other types of conspicuously consumed goods, rare or unusual animals may be purchased to satisfy the consumer's need for status (Hirschman, 1994). In 2011, more than 70 million households in Europe kept a pet. The direct and indirect industry of pet breeders, veterinarians etc. creates more than half a million jobs throughout Europe. Although in recent years many studies have been conducted from psychological or medical point of view of companion animals' and their owners' interactions, the academic knowledge from consumer behaviour perspective is still scarce. Authors of this thesis employed attitudes, various self and conspicious consumption theories in order to dig deeper into the topic of pets as status symbols, in particular rare and pure-bred cats and dogs. With the help of convenience sampling technique, internet survey was distributed. Authors questioned 165 students in Jönköping International Business School and created a data sample which was later used in statistical analysis. By combining descriptive statistics, Principal component analysis and Cluster analysis, a research design for the topic at hand was developed, which allowed to squeeze out every bit of valuable information. According to the statistical analysis, four most important factors influencing pet-related conspicuous consumption are (in order of importance): Ostentation, Social Recognition, Conformity and Materialistic Indulgence. With regards to these factors, all participants were grouped in four clusters: Blue Blooded People, Indifferent Boasters, Status Candidates and Approval Seekers. This research design resulted in vast array of managerial implications and creation of academic knowledge in respective consumer behaviour field.

Searle, B. G. "Calculation of 6j symbols." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Physics, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8118.

Full text
Abstract:
At present there is no complete algorithm for the calculation of the coupling or recoupling factors of an arbitrary compact group. However, this thesis is based on the premise that the 6j can be calculated using only the Kronecker product rules for the group and the general relations between 6j. We review the symmetry properties of the 6j symbols and choose a set of values for the permutation matrices of a mixed symmetry triad. An algorithm is presented for the recursive calculation of coupling and recoupling factors in terms of the primitive factors. This algorithm is shown to be complete. It is then shown how this algorithm may be applied to a larger class of group theoretic transformation factors. The primitive 6j are then split into four classes. This allows us to specify complete algorithms for the calculation of all but one of these classes. This is a major advance since it was previously necessary to systematically try all equations in order to solve an unknown 6j. We conjecture that our algorithm for the calculation of the fourth class of primitive 6j, the core 6j, is complete, although we are only able to prove this for SO₃. As a consequence we discuss the various special cases that occur in groups more complex than SO₃, starting with the point groups. New results are given for the groups G₂ and E₈, and the 6j for the mixed symmetry finite group K₂₀ are completely solved. The data structures necessary for the implementation of the algorithms in a PASCAL program are discussed, along with the algorithms required to calculate the symmetrised powers of an irrep.

Through photographs and installation, I seek to understand their presence in my, and our, unconscious mind.

Abstract:
Batman has become a fixture in the popular consciousness of America. Since his first publication in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, he has never ceased publication, appearing in multiple titles every month as well as successfully transitioning into other media such as film and television. A focused analysis of the character will reveal that Batman has achieved and maintained this cultural resonance for almost seventy years by virtue of attaining the status of a postmodern American mythology. In both theme and function, Batman has several direct connections to ancient mythology and has adapted that form into a distinctly American archetype. And as a popular cultural symbol, he has shown remarkable malleability to reflect the attitudes of his contemporary culture. An examination of Batman's enduring and changing characteristics will reveal insights into American values, culture and history during the twentieth and into the twenty-first centuries.

Smith, Alison Mary Ann. "The utility of symbols : the relationship between symbols and legitimacy in international relations." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/12617.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis will demonstrate that symbols matter in international relations because of the way they can influence legitimacy. Joseph Nye has argued, “cooperation is a matter of degree” in international relations (Nye 2004, 29); legitimacy is one of the factors that determines the extent to which the international community will cooperate with a given action. Thomas Franck (1990) argues that legitimacy, too, is a matter of degree. This means that actions are not always judged to be strictly legitimate or illegitimate, but rather, they fall on a spectrum somewhere between the two extremes. The puzzle, however, is how states calculate the degree of legitimacy of an action. I argue that symbols have an important role to play in this calculation of the extent to which an action is seen as legitimate. This thesis will further explore the role and power of symbols in international relations, a role that the literature on legitimacy has not thoroughly discussed. I will use two case studies, Canada’s refusals to endorse Operation Iraqi Freedom and Ballistic Missile Defence, to demonstrate that symbols are a source of power in international relations. The American administration went to significant lengths to try to obtain a Canadian endorsement of these initiatives because it knew that this endorsement would contribute to the perceived legitimacy of these actions. The degree to which an action is seen as legitimate can influence the extent to which the international community will cooperate with it, or at least not resist it. I conclude that this argument has implications for Canadian foreign and defence policy, and that the literature regarding legitimacy should better reflect this power of symbols in international relations.

Abstract:
We establish elements of a new approch to ellipticity and parametrices within operator algebras on a manifold with higher singularities, only based on some general axiomatic requirements on parameter-dependent operators in suitable scales of spaces. The idea is to model an iterative process with new generations of parameter-dependent operator theories, together with new scales of spaces that satisfy analogous requirements as the original ones, now on a corresponding higher level. The “full” calculus is voluminous; so we content ourselves here with some typical aspects such as symbols in terms of order reducing families, classes of relevant examples, and operators near the conical exit to infinity.

Full text
Abstract:
Let K be a number field, R its ring of integers. For some classes of fields, spaces of cusp forms of weight 2 for GL(2;K) have been computed using methods based on modular symbols. J.E. Cremona [9] began the programme of extending the classical methods over Q to the case of imaginary quadratic fields. This work was continued by some of his Ph.D. students [35, 6, 22], and results have been obtained for some imaginary quadratic fields with small class number. More recently, P. Gunnells and D. Yasaki [18] have developed related algorithms for real quadratic fields. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the extension of the modular symbols method, when possible developing algorithms and implementations for effective computations. Some parts of the theory are purely algebraic and can be extended to all number fields. We generalise the theory for cusps and Manin symbols; we also describe a generalisation of Atkin-Lehner involutions and study other normaliser elements. On the other hand, all previous explicit computations for the imaginary quadratic field case were done only for specific fields. In the last part of this thesis we begin work towards a general implementation of the techniques used in this case. In particular, we are able to compute a fundamental domain of the hyperbolic 3-space for any imaginary quadratic field. Implementations of the algorithms described in this thesis have been written by the author in the open-source mathematics software Sage [31].

Abstract:
Explanations of why mathematics is useful to empirical research focus on mathematics' role as a representation or model. On platonist accounts, the representational relation is one of structural correspondence between features of the real world and the abstract mathematical structures that represent them. Where real numbers are concerned, however, there is good reason to think the world's correspondence with systems of real number symbols, rather than the real numbers themselves, can be utilized for our representational purposes. One way this can be accomplished is through a paraphrase interpretation of real number symbols where the symbols are taken to refer directly to the things in the world real numbers are supposed to represent. A platonist account of structural correspondence between structures of real numbers and the world can be found in the foundations of measurement where a scale of real numbers is applied to quantities of physical properties like length, mass and velocity. This subject will be employed as a demonstration of how abstract real numbers, traditionally construed as modeling features of the world, are superfluous if their symbols are taken to refer directly to those features.
