Clayton, Sarah. "The cognitive underpinnings of non-symbolic comparison task performance." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/20925.

Abstract:
Over the past twenty years, the Approximate Number System (ANS), a cognitive system for representing non-symbolic quantity information, has been the focus of much research attention. Psychologists seeking to understand how individuals learn and perform mathematics have investigated how this system might underlie symbolic mathematical skills. Dot comparison tasks are commonly used as measures of ANS acuity, however very little is known about the cognitive skills that are involved in completing these tasks. The aim of this thesis was to explore the factors that influence performance on dot comparison tasks and discuss the implications of these findings for future research and educational interventions. The first study investigated how the accuracy and reliability of magnitude judgements is influenced by the visual cue controls used to create dot array stimuli. This study found that participants performances on dot comparison tasks created with different visual cue controls were unrelated, and that stimuli generation methods have a substantial influence on test-retest reliability. The studies reported in the second part of this thesis (Studies 2, 3, 4 and 5) explored the role of inhibition in dot comparison task performance. The results of these studies provide evidence that individual differences in inhibition may, at least partially, explain individual differences in dot comparison task performance. Finally, a large multi-study re-analysis of dot comparison data investigated whether individuals take account of numerosity information over and above the visual cues of the stimuli when comparing dot arrays. This analysis revealed that dot comparison task performance may not reflect numerosity processing independently from visual cue processing for all participants, particularly children. This novel evidence may provide some clarification for conflicting results in the literature regarding the relationship between ANS acuity and mathematics achievement. The present findings call into question whether dot comparison tasks should continue to be used as valid measures of ANS acuity.

Abstract:
A cognitive process model is developed that predicts the 3 major symbolic comparison response time effects (distance, end, and semantic congruity) found in the results of the linear syllogistic reasoning task. The model assumes that people generate an ordering of a finite set of symbolic stimuli on the basis of information contained in the pairwise relations between adjacent stimulus items. The learning of this ordering is simulated within a simple connectionist framework. The decision-making component of the model utilizes 2 separate evidence accrual processes operating in parallel. One process accumulates information about the positional difference between the stimulus items being compared, and the other accumulates information about the endpoint status of each of those items. A response occurs whenever enough evidence favouring it has been accumulated within either of these processes. The model also assumes that the congruencies between the positions of the stimulus items within the ordering and the form of the comparative instruction can lead to either interfering or facilitating effects on the rate of evidence accumulation within each of these accrual processes. To test the model, data are obtained from the single-session performances of a group of 16 subjects and the multiple-session performances of an additional 2 subjects. The task is a variant of the one used by Trabasso, Riley, and Wilson (1975) and involves paired comparisons of ordered symbolic stimuli (three-letter names). Simulations of the model provide an excellent account of the group mean correct response times, as well as a very good account of the full set of data obtained from the 2 additional subjects (including percentage correct and response time distributional data).

Watson, Sarah Elizabeth. "Children's arithmetic development : contributions of symbolic and nonsymbolic magnitude comparison." Thesis, University of York, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/5178/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aimed to explore the predictors of children’s arithmetic development with a specific focus on magnitude comparison. Children were assessed in whole class groups in order to recruit a sample large enough to use structural equation modeling (Chapters 2, 4 and 5), while also assessing a subsample of children individually with computerised measures (Chapter 6). This thesis also aimed to explore children’s development on the magnitude comparison tasks within the same group of children (Chapters 3 and Chapter 6 Study 1). Chapter 2 first assessed the underlying latent factors that different comparison tasks may have in common. It was found that symbolic and nonsymbolic comparison tasks loaded on the same factor (magnitude comparison), whilst letter comparison formed a separate factor. Furthermore, children’s magnitude comparison ability was found to be a concurrent predictor of their arithmetic achievement but letter comparison was not. The longitudinal analyses in Chapters 4 and 5 show how magnitude comparison ability was not a predictor of children’s untimed arithmetic ability, or fluency at completing subtraction and multiplication problems either one or two years later. However, it was a significant predictor of addition fluency one year later. In comparison, number identification ability was found to be a consistent predictor of arithmetic achievement both concurrently and longitudinally. Chapter 6 investigated whether the inconsistent findings regarding the importance of magnitude comparison ability was due to the methodology used to assess it. Computerised magnitude comparison tasks more akin to those in previous studies were individually presented to a subgroup of children that also completed the group based measures. Neither symbolic nor nonsymbolic comparison ability was found to predict later arithmetic achievement, whereas number identification was a significant predictor. Finally in Chapters 3 and 6, it was found that children improved significantly over time on all of the magnitude comparison tasks presented.

Li, Jialin. Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSE3021.

Full text
Abstract:
The dragon is the national symbol of China and the rooster is of France. The dragon is an imagined animal; the rooster is a real. They are different from other symbols such as Germanic eagle who evokes strength and authority at the first sight. Why the dragon and the rooster could have been served as a country’s symbol: what characteristics do they have? what conditions have they fulfilled in the history to win this place? We try to answer the questions with three parts. The part I studies the two symbols’ presence in daily life. We find that a frequent presence produces a familiarity that allows all social communities to identify the appearance. The part II is on the iconography and aesthetics. The morphological evolutions of the two symbols reveal that their image combines the human and the animal. We discover that the two symbols present common schemas: strength, privilege, power, etc. Nevertheless, their image is obtained in a different way. The frontal dragon is in connection with the emperor, the rooster with an image of knight and hero. The part III focuses on the literature, discusses the nomination and the role. The study on the nomination reveals that the two animals’ name and appellation confirm the identified schemas of leader, emperor and elite, which allow the literary character, dragon or rooster, to manifest their authority of emperor (king), civilizing hero or mythical ancestor. These similarities bring their image closer to the national symbol. Besides the homogeneous aspects, we find a heterogeneity in the construction of the two symbols’ image on the ideal personality of the two countries: the emperor for the Chinese and the hero for the Frenchmen

Abstract:
For young adult’s age 18-25 years, Instagram is a popular social network. With the expansion of social media, a new kind of commercial role- model has been created, the so- called Influencers. Based on the understanding and interpretation of previous research, this study will look into what impact the social network phenomena Instagram-Influencers have on young girls’ self-perception and identity. The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: How do young women experience the social network Instagram and its Influencers? How is the identity of young women affected by the Influencers on the social media Instagram? In what way do young women experience that their identity is being shaped, in those cases it has an impact? To study this, qualitative interviews are used and conducted with six different active female users, between ages 18-25. The collected data were analyzed with a thematic inductive approach. The result is linked to three main themes; Instagram's importance, being an Influencer, Influencers and their impact on their followers, as well as the subcategory: Identity online and identity offline. In my analyzation, the conclusion is, that there is a clear link between an increased digital interaction and social comparison, and their effect on identity and self-perception. The respondents believe that the Influencers display a misleading view of reality. The followers get the impression that the content is filtered and only highlights flattering topics, and that the purpose with this is to enforce and emphasize the value of the Influencers’ statements. Similarly, the respondents themselves are affected to construct images of happiness, but in reality – offline- the feeling of loneliness and sadness occurs. The end discussion addresses the clear link between increased digital interactions and the sense of social comparison, the need for conformity and role-limiting behavior.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate how 15 year olds discuss and form a perception of themselves and their bodies through the influence of social media. The study is also aimed to examine how teenagers discuss such core-concepts as norm, symbolic interactionism, self-reflection and self-esteem as well as explore any gender-related differences in their attitudes. The study involves a total of 23 youngsters; 12 females and 11 males.  The study is based on a qualitative method and three thoroughly structured group-discussions of one hour each. The empiric material, which has been gathered through the process, was analyzed through social-psychological terms as media, norm, symbolic interactionism and self-reflection as well as the psychological concept of self-esteem. This study shows that the average usage of the Internet amongst interviewed teenagers is 2,95 hours per day making Facebook and Instagram the most popular forms of social media. The conclusion also demonstrates that, although the adolescent generally remain critical towards the medial influence, some gender-related differences do exist. It is further shown that boy subjects consider themselves to be less affected on intellectual and emotional level making them feel satisfied about themselves after exposure to media. This can be explained by the fact that boys don’t identify themselves to the images and usually don’t believe that the images reflect a norm which is worth following. Girls, on the other hand, are normally affected in a larger extension than the opposite sex inducting feelings of envy and jealousy.

Penkler, Stephanie Nandl. "A Comparison of the graphic symbol utterances arranged by children with little or no functional speech and children with typical development." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/41316.

Full text
Abstract:
The structure of graphic symbol utterance constructed by children with typical development and also children with little or no functional speech often differs considerably from spoken utterances. Whether the structure of graphic symbol utterances constructed by these two groups is influenced by similar factors is as yet unknown, as a systematic comparison between the two groups of children has not been conducted. This study aimed to investigate and compare the graphic symbol utterances arranged by children with little or no functional speech with those arranged by their typically developing peers when they were matched according to receptive language age. The utterances were analysed in terms of three variables, namely content, order and intelligibility. The results indicated that children with little or no functional speech do not differ significantly to children with typical development on tasks of graphic symbol utterance construction. The results also indicated that children with higher receptive language age start to use the spoken language word order as a model when arranging graphic symbol utterances more than children with lower receptive language age. The findings suggest that receptive language age plays a role in graphic symbol utterance constructions. The use of structures that do not follow spoken language may be explained by effects of the visual modality.

Abstract:

Marriage is an institution found in every society, culture or religion in the world. The Catholic Church has maintained most of her seven Sacraments including that of marriage. The Church of Sweden, an established Evangelical Lutheran faith, born out of the 16th century Reformation has two Sacraments excluding marriage. This field study was carried out in Gävle, Sweden in spring 2009. A comparative study of marriage in the Catholic Church and the Church of Sweden and the reason each church alludes to based on scripture and tradition was to help me, an African Catholic, understand differences between the respective churches and also understand why the Church of Sweden accepts same sex marriages. This was my motivation for writing this paper. I hope this paper will serve as a study guide to new people who come to Sweden from other cultures to enable them understand why the “Modus Operandi” regarding church marriage in Sweden is different from the church marriage in their native countries.

Abstract:
Through comparative research into four municipal case studies in France, England and Scotland, this thesis intends to contribute to the scientific debate between "national models" (national share) and local autonomy. Based on the sociology of public problems and the sociology of public action, our thesis sets out to study how the regulation of the Muslim faith - defined as the combination between the organization of a faith and the presence of diverse Muslim populations - is affected by the construction of a "Muslim problem" at different levels: local, national and international. In order to determine whether Islam constitutes a category of public intervention, we draw on the cognitive approach to public policies and the analysis of their instrumentation. Our socio-historical approach requires the occasional use of the notion of "path of dependency". Abstract:
This thesis focuses upon the imagination of the four elements through contemporary comperative literature, between French writer Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio and Iranian writer Goli Taraqi. The methodology used here reveals symbolic characters from the sensitive qualities of each element. On the other hand, compared literature requires that we understand our subject with a more expanded vision based on cultural and societal facts because each writer carries in his/her own imagination of the nature at times a personal and collective memory. This memory is in fact crossed by particular historic events which have a specific influence on individual psychology and relation with the world. The share of memories and the interpretation of memories are attentively observed and we follow the way the writer has designed for each element in writing his world. This study is comprised of three parts: The first and the second parts are about sensitive and symbolic areas and the third part compares the results obtained from exposing the thematic networks of images and symbols. Finally, the conclusion brings us to underscore the importance of psychology of each writer, which determines a territory of action for each element by outlining a cosmogony whose four elements represent only a single aspect. The advantage with analysis in the compared literature here is that the latter is rich in meaning, allowing the emergence of differences and elements of universality beyond erosion resulting from the globalization of post-modernity. The writer shows a sort of independence through persistence of specific lively attitudes through the vigor of cultural roots

Abstract:

Trellis-Coded Modulation (TCM) is employed with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) to provide error correction coding with no expense in bandwidth. There are two common implementations of TCM, namely pragmatic TCM and Ungerboeck TCM. Both schemes employ Viterbi algorithms for decoding but have different code construction. This thesis investigates and compares the performance of pragmatic TCM and Ungerboeck TCM by implementing the Viterbi decoding algorithm for both schemes with 16-QAM and 64-QAM. Both pragmatic and Ungerboeck TCM with six memory elements are considered. Simulations were carried out for both pragmatic and Ungerboeck TCM to evaluate their respective performance. The simulations were done using Matlab software, and an additive white Gaussian noise channel was assumed. The objective was to ascertain that pragmatic TCM, with its reduced-complexity decoding, is more suitable to adaptive modulation than Ungerboeck TCM.

Abstract:
In the second half of the 20th century, work undertaken in the field of curriculum sociology by Anglo-Saxon and after European researchers made it possible to question the legitimacy of curricular knowledge, in particular its socially constructed character. Some studies have shown that there are variations in teaching content depending on the social composition of the school public. In other words, researches have apprehended the unequal effects of curriculum selection by highlighting a hierarchy of knowledge through a hierarchy of students. The aim of this study is to examine the manufacturing processes of inequalities by and in schools as part of physical education (PE) lessons. By drawing on students between 11 and 15 from socially contrasting schools in France and in the French part of Belgium, we tried to show that in PE, school maintained a social sorting role, conducive to cultural arbitrariness and symbolic violence. First, ethnographic observations as well as semi-directive interviews indicated that through curricular choices and the internal structuring of the discipline, teachers could reinforce or even aggravate school inequalities between students and have an impact on their well-being. This was corroborated by the procedure of Condorcet (comparison by pairs survey), which found that some of the most commonly used practice modalities in PE - performance and showing - were perceived as the most stressful by students. Secondly, after having identified with the help of sociometry survey that groups chosen by the students in PE pursued a sociological endogamy logic, we conducted several experiments, some of which used game theory to observe that in vivo, institutional choices were vectors of stress, ill-being and violence for some students

Since 2004, a large number of foreign companies invest in Vietnam. These companies are facing major challenges in the field of human resource management, especially for labor disputes. How to understand the causes of labor disputes in order to make effective treatment is a topic worth exploring. To effectively prevent and settle the issues of labor disputes, they need to fully understand the underlying causes of labor disputes, and to manage the different view of points between labors and management. This study adopts the symbolic communication theory to investigate the underlying causes of labor disputes and compare the labor disputes perceptions between labors and management. Data are collected from Vietnam''s foreign companies with some events of labor disputes. We use the coding methods from grounded theory for data analysis to explore the interpretations of labor disputes by Vietnamese workers and employers (or management) and make comparison to their different point of views. Contents of analysis include the causes of labor disputes, meanings of labor disputes and factors in background contexts. Based on the data analysis, we come out the following conclusions: (1). Both the labors and the management consider that the main cause of the labor disputes is wages and welfare system, secondly the managerial style, again the legal system. The labors and the management make some different perceptions about the reasons of labor disputes in managerial style cause and legal system cause. (2). Both the labors and the management consider that the main meanings of labor disputes is in individual psychological level, followed by family and interpersonal factors, organization identity. The labors and the management make some different meaning interpretations about the family and interpersonal factors. (3) Both the labors and the management consider that the main background context to affect their interpretations is the social and cultural factors, followed by general and industrial environment. The labors and the management make some different meaning considerations about the social and cultural factors. According to above-mentioned conclusions, some useful suggestions about how to communicate effectively between labors and management and to prevent and handle the labor disputes problems are provided.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the effects of consumers' self-congruency on purchase intentions of real products versus virtual products in terms of functional, hedonic, and symbolic products as moderate effect. Self-image includes actual self and ideal self; as for the moderating effects of “psychological demand character” (Woods, 1960), this study divides both real and virtual products into utilitarian product, hedonic product, and symbolic product to measure the influences of actual-self image congruency and ideal-self image congruency on different product categories. After two pretests to find out the representative product for each category of real and virtual products, this study takes toothbrush and detoxification medicine for functional products; KTV and virtual e-lover for hedonic products; and ring and Knight insignia for symbolic products. Self-image and product-image are measured by the 15-item semantic differential scale. The magnitude of purchase intention is measured with four questions, “consider to buy”,“intend to buy”, “it’s an important consumption”, and “it’s important to ownTwo-hundred-twenty-eight paper-based questionnaires and 201 virtual questionnaires were collected and regressed to verify the effects of consumers' self-congruency on purchase intentions. There are some key findings. 1. For functional products, regardless of real or virtual products, the effect of consumers' self-congruency on purchase intentions is not significant. 2. Actual-self image congruency influences the purchase intention of hedonic product more. 3. Symbolic product can be classified into self-enhancing and role-positioning. These two product purchase intentions are respectively affected by actual-self image congruency and ideal-self image congruency. 4. When product purchasing decision becomes group decision, individual self-congruency will be constrained. To sum up, product image positioning should consider the target customers’ self-images, instead of demography data. Also, according to different product categories, product images should be shaped differently. Functional product should focus on quality image. Hedonic and symbolic products should adopt the images matching consumers’ self images. This will help form better brand and product positioning strategies.

Murta, Jacqueline Barbosa. "As máscaras simbólicas e intertextuais em Florbela Espanca." Master's thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/84677.

Abstract:
A morte e a vida.
Florbela Espanca is not only well-known for her narrative fiction but also for her poems. Her stories have its particular mark which is characterized by such stories as".....Root and Flower, The Night and the Star of Dawn, The Spring, The Bashful Lover and Lilial Sister". Through the analysis we can unmask the gaps that make-up the fascinating reading of mosaic. Passing through referential influence of the Mythology of Gods to heroic consecration of their children (semi-gods), an indispensable source for the appearance of symbolic representation of the sea and its respective interpretative elements as the base for the projection of the state of souls of the sentimental writers in which the theme of "pain" permits the reutilization of an image in another textual construction where superposition, absorption and the transformation of a multiplicity of other texts. This elaborated style of writing makes it possible for the study of comparisons with other texts. Here, this intertextual relation, with a poem of the consecrated ultra-romantic writer Soares de Passos, permits the observation of the decadent and ultra-romantic tendency in Florbela, so that it confirms its inner conflict in detriment to its existence. Even so, it doesn't stop reaffirming her as a writer of her time. She was named "Poetess of Love" by José Régio and it also highlights " The Extraordinary Force of Nature, Violent Passion always alighted by a Volcano, and desires which was the life and work Of Florbela”.

Abstract:
This theses aims to find ways how to expand cultural and historical awareness of the young generation. It is inspired by a longterm program of the National Heritage Institute, Regional Center in České Budějovice, which is called "Let's play and study with sights." The theses follows the main ideas of this project and an educational proposal is created, which is supposed to introduce religious monuments in the city as well as try to point out the fact that these sites have been more or less transformed in the interior and some of them have undergone a change in its original purpose over decades or centuries. The theses also introduces the former holy of holies where an educational process was taking place in the 19th century. Descriptive research is developed into an educational program where presentation and comparison with other sacred objects is offered. An attempt to discover a tangible symbol of transcendence, and take photos of it, was chosen to be the activation element. Regarding the complexity of issues, this theses is meant for the final grades of primary schools and at the same level for the grades of grammar schools, it can also be used for lower grades of fouryear grammar schools and secondary schools. Its content should extend the lessons of history, art, aesthetics, and is also applicable as an extracurricular activity. It represents an educational proposal using the objectbased learning along with a continuous dialogue.
