Alsindi, Wassim Zuhair. "Solvent based switching of photophysical properties of transition metal complexes." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2007. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13786/.

Full text
Abstract:
The work presented in this Thesis describes the modular design and spectroscopic study of polynuclear systems based on ruthenium (II) and rhenium (I) complexes. A combination of UV/vis, luminescence and TRIR spectroscopies, electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry and conformational analysis have been employed to understand the electronic structure of the ground and excited states of these compounds. Chapter I gives an introductory background to this Thesis. An overview of transition metal photophysics and excited states, and the typical spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques used in their study is presented. Previous studies of the ground and excited state properties of the complexes [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and [ReCl(CO)3bpy)] which are used as supramolecular building blocks in this Thesis are presented and a number of relevant studies of supramolecular systems are described. Chapter 2 contains a study extending the known family of [Ru(CN)4(NN)]2- complexes and describes their unique advantages over [Ru(bpy)3]2+. The results obtained are discussed alongside previous studies. This completes the introduction of the molecular building blocks used in Chapters 3 and 4. Chapter 3 details a study of through-space PEnT in bimetallic systems constructed from the complexes introduced in Chapters I and 2, bridged by a saturated alkyl linker between bpy ligands on either metal. This Chapter demonstrates the solvent-switchable nature of the direction and gradient of PEnT, using ps-TRIR spectroscopy to directly probe these processes in real time. Chapter 4 describes a study of bimetallic systems bridged by conjugated the ligand 2,2'- bipyrimidine. Monometallic, homobimetallic and heterobimetallic systems are studied and questions arising from limitations of previous studies are addressed. In particular ps-TRIR spectroscopy gives new insight into the numerous ultrafast processes occurring. Chapter 5 summarises the achievements of this Thesis and suggests promising directions for extending this work in the future. Chapter 6 describes the experimental and theoretical techniques used in this Thesis.

Trapatseli, Maria. "Doping controlled resistive switching dynamics in transition metal oxide thin films." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2018. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/423702/.

Full text
Abstract:
Transition metal oxide thin films have attracted increasing attention due to their potential in non-volatile resistive random access memory (RRAM) devices, where such thin films are used as active layers in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) configurations. Titanium dioxide is one of the most celebrated oxides among the ones that exhibit resistive switching behaviour due to its wide band gap, high thermal stability, and high dielectric constant. RRAM devices with various materials as active layers, have demonstrated very fast switching performance but also huge potential for miniaturisation, which is the bottleneck of FLASH memory. Nevertheless, these devices very often suffer poor endurance, physical degradation, large variability of switching parameters and low yields. In most cases, the physical degradation stems from high electroforming and switching voltages. Doping of the active layer has been often employed to enhance the performance of RRAM devices, like endurance, OFF/ON ratio, forming voltages, etc. In this work, doping in TiO2-x RRAM devices was used to engineer the electroforming and switching thresholds so that device degradation and failure can be delayed or prevented. Al and Nb were selected with basic criteria the ionic radius and the oxidation state. The doped RRAM devices, showed improved switching performance compared to their undoped counterparts. Alternative approaches to doping were also investigated, like multilayer stacks comprising Al2O3-y and TiO2-x thin films. Furthermore, Al:TiO2-x/Nb:TiO2-x bilayer RRAM devices were fabricated, to prove whether a diode behaviour of the p-n interface inside the RRAM was feasible. The latest would be a particularly interesting finding towards active electronics.

Choi, Jae-Young. "Analysis of Inductor-Coupled Zero-Voltage-Transition Converters." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28537.

Full text
Abstract:
As is the case for DC-DC converters, multi-phase converters require both high-quality power control and high power-density. Although a higher switching frequency not only improves the quality of the converter output but also decreases the size of the converter, it increases switching losses and electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise. Since the soft-switching topologies reduce the switching losses of the converter main switches, the topologies make converters partially independent from the switching frequency. However, the conventional soft-switching topologies have already proposed most of the possible ways to improve converter performance. In addition, the trends of the newly generated power devices reduce the advantages of soft-switching topologies. This critical situation surrounding soft-switching topologies gives research motivations: What features of soft-switching topologies facilitate their practical applications? Given this motivation, the dissertation discusses two aspects = simplifying auxiliary circuits and accounting for the effects of soft-switching operations on the converter control. Engineers working with medium- and high-power multi-phase converters require simplified soft-switching topologies that have the same level of performance as the conventional soft-switching topologies. This demand is the impetus behind one of the research objectives = simplifying the auxiliary circuits of Zero-Voltage-Transition (ZVT) inverters. Simplifying the auxiliary circuits results in both a smaller number of and lower cost for auxiliary components, without any negative impact on performance. This dissertation proposes two major concepts for the simplification - the Single-Switch Single-Leg (S3L) ZVT cell and the Phase-Lock (PL) concept. Throughout an effort to eliminate circulating currents of inductor-coupled (IC) ZVT converters, the S3L ZVT cell is developed. The proposed cell allows a single auxiliary switch to achieve zero-voltage conditions for both the top and bottom main switches, and it achieves the same level of performance as the conventional ZVT cell, as well. This proposal makes IC ZVT topologies more attractive to multi-phase converter applications. Because all of the top main switches generally have identical sequences for zero-voltage turn-on commutations, one auxiliary switch might handle the commutations of all of the top main switches. This possibility introduces the PL concept, which allows the two auxiliary switches to provide a zero-voltage condition for any main switch commutation. In order to compensate for restrictions of this concept, a modified space-vector modulation (SVM) scheme also is introduced. A soft-switching topology changes the duty ratios of the converter, which affects the controllability of the converter. Therefore, this dissertation selects resolution of this issue as one of the research objectives. This dissertation derives the generalized timing equations of ZVT operations, and the generalized equations formulize the effect of ZVT operation on both duty ratios and DC current. Moreover, the effect of SVM schemes is also investigated. An average model of the ZVT converter is developed using both the timing analysis and the investigation of SVM schemes, and small-signal analysis using the average model predicts the steady-state characteristics of the converter.

Bertoni, Roman. "Ultrafast photo-switching of spin crossover crystals : coherence and cooperativity." Phd thesis, Université Rennes 1, 2013. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-01016162.

Full text
Abstract:
The main topic of this thesis is the study of the ultrafast photo-switching of photo-magnetic molecular materials showing transition between spin states. These molecular crystals are prototypes of molecular bistability between two distinct electronic states, HS and LS. The molecules can be switched between these two states by a light pulse. The emergence of ultrafast techniques allows us to study in real time these photo-switching processes and also the associated out-of-equilibrium dynamics down to the femtosecond scale (10-15s). We have combined probes sensitive to the change of electronic state, on the hand, and to structural rearrangements, on the other hand, in order to observe these photo-switching processes. The measurements of ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy have been made using the laser plateform at the IPR. Complementary time resolved X-ray diffraction and absorption experiments have been performed on large facilities. The first part of this manuscript is focused on the photo-switching dynamics at molecular scale. It reveals a complicated interaction between electronic and structural degrees of freedom. The generation and damping of coherent optical phonons is identified as a key parameter in the trapping in HS potential. Several experiments on different compounds show the linear and local character of such ultrafast photo-switching. The second part of this thesis presents studies on the complete out of equilibrium dynamics. It reveals a cascading process with activation of elastic and thermal effects at different time scales. Cooperative processes following a light excitation are observed. These complexes dynamics are driven by propagating and diffusive process sensitive to the size of the sample. The study of nanocrystals yields high conversion and faster response to elastics effect than single-crystals. These studies further elucidate the out of equilibrium processes underlying the photo-induced phase transitions on time and length scales, from the molecule to material scale.

Abstract:
Strongly correlated perovskite oxides are a class of materials with fascinating intrinsic physical functionalities due to the interplay of charge, spin, orbital ordering and lattice effects. The exotic phenomena arising from these competing degrees of freedom include superconductivity, ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity and metal-insulator transitions, among others. The use of these exotic phenomena in a new generation of devices with new and enhanced functionalities is continuing inspiring the research community. In this sense, Resistive-Random Access Memories (RRAM) are one of the most promising candidates to win the race towards the universal memory of the future, which could overcome the limitations of actual technologies (Flash and Dynamic-RAM), due to their excellent properties in terms of scalability, endurance, retention and switching speeds. They are based on the Resistive Switching effect (RS), where the application of an electric field produces a reversible, non-volatile change in the resistance between two or more resistive states. This phenomenon has been observed in a large variety of oxide materials, where the motion of oxygen is widely accepted to play a key role in their outstanding properties. However, the exact mechanism governing this effect is material-dependent and for some of them it is still far to be understood. This lack of understanding is actually one of the main bottlenecks preventing the widespread use of this technology. In this thesis, we present a novel Resistive Switching mechanism based on the Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT) in metallic perovskite oxides with strong electron electron interaction. We analyse the RS behaviour of three different families of metallic perovskites: La1-xSrxMnO3, YBa2Cu3O7-δ and RENiO3 and demonstrate that the MIT of these mixed electronic-ionic conductors can be tuned upon the application of an electric field, being able to transform the entire bulk volume. This volume RS is different in nature from interfacial or filamentary type and opens new possibilities of robust device design. Thorough nanoscale electrical characterization of the RS effect in these systems has been performed by means of Conductive-Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM). Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy (STS) and temperature-dependent transport measurements were performed in the different resistive states to get insight into their electronic features. The nanoscale memristive behaviour of these systems is successfully reproduced at a micrometric scale with W-Au tips in probe station experiments. Using this approach, atmosphere dependent measurements were undertaken, where oxygen exchange with the ambience is strongly evidenced. In addition, we present a proof-of-principle result from a 3-Terminal configuration where the RS effect is applied at the gate of the device. In the particular case of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-δ films, we have studied the influence of high resistance areas, which are embedded in the material, on the superconducting transport properties enabling vortex pinning modification and paving the way towards novel reconfigurable vortex pinning sites. We interpret the RS results of these strongly correlated systems in terms of a Mott volume transition, that we believe to be of general validity for metallic perovskite complex oxides. We have verified that strongly correlated metallic perovskite oxides are a unique class of materials very promising for RS applications due to its intrinsic MIT properties that boosts a robust volumetric resistive switching effect. This thesis settles down the framework to understand the RS effect in these strongly correlated pervoskites, which could eventually lead to a new generation of devices exploiting the intrinsic MIT of these systems.

Chukmaitova, Dariga. "Sector-Switching in Transition Economies: A Case Study of Kazakhstan's Health Care Sector." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2011. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cgu_etd/20.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation examines the economic and behavioral factors influencing 'sector-switching' in Kazakhstan's health care industry. Sector-switching involves doctors moving from the national to the private system, which is not well established, thereby raising questions about why the switch occurs. It addresses the question: why health care professionals in Kazakhstan switch from the public sector to similar jobs in the private or nonprofit sectors? This study addresses a key issue in public management (sector switching) and also offers insights into the dynamics of the transition from a centralized economy to a market economy. As such, its findings have `real-world' applications beyond the particular case being studied i.e. Kazakhstan. This study is based on two simple claims. First, fundamental to the reforms that characterize transitional economies is effectively moving public sector employees to a nascent private sector. Second, such switches are unique because the risks related to transitioning to the private sector are different in transitional economies than in established market economies. Thus, the study considers: the degree to which economic and behavioral factors interact with different perceptions of sectoral risk, and subsequently shape the decision to move from the public sector to the private sector; in particular in Kazakhstan's health industry. The data supporting this study come from a survey covering approximately 1,000 health care professionals (practicing physicians working in both the public and private health care sectors) from nine regions of Kazakhstan. The data includes information about individual incentives physicians have for switching sections and their perceptions of perceived risks and uncertainties given the economic transition currently underway in Kazakhstan. The findings of the research suggest the strong support for the proposed hypotheses and have revealed some of the dynamics of sector switching behavior and the characteristics of "sector switchers" in Kazakhstan. The results demonstrate that physicians' overall job dissatisfaction, relative salary compared to physicians in a different sector, their risk-taking behavior, the national health care system's deterioration compared to previous years, as well as problems with providing medical services in the country affect physicians in making their decision to change their employment sector.

Abstract:
This paper studies the predictive performance and in-sample dynamics of three regime switching models for Swedish macroeconomic time series. The models discussed are threshold autoregressive (TAR), Markov switching autoregressive (MSM-AR), and smooth-transition autoregressive (STAR) regime switching models. We perform recursive out-of-sample forecasting to study the predictive performance of the models. We also assess the in-sample dynamics correspondence to the forecast performance and find that there is not always a relationship. Furthermore, we seek to explore if these unrestricted models yield interpretable results regarding the regimes from an macroeconomic standpoint. We assess GDP-growth, the unemployment rate, and government bond yields and find evidence of Teräsvirta's claims that even when the data has non-linear dynamics, non-linear models might not improve the forecast performance of linear models when the forecast window is linear.

Abstract:
This PhD project is focused on three lead-free ferroelectric solid solutions, which are specifically Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-KNbO3(NBT-KN), Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-NaNbO3(NBT-NN) and Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-BaTiO3(NBT-BT), to evaluate the effects of composition, electric field and temperature on structural and electrical properties. Novel observations of both reversible and irreversible electric field-induced phase switching were made in both NBT-KN and NBT-NN ceramics. The NBT-KN solid solution is the primary focus of this thesis. All compositions were observed to be cubic in the as-sintered, unpoled state. However, a well-defined ferroelectric hysteresis P-E loop was obtained for compositions with low KN contents, indicating that an irreversible phase transition from a weak-polar relaxor ferroelectric (RF) to a long-range ordered metastable ferroelectric (FE) state had occurred during the measurement procedure. Both the unpoled and poled ceramic powders were examined using high resolution synchrotron XRD. For the poled state, a rhombohedral R3c structure was identified for compositions with low KN content, confirming the occurrence of the irreversible electric field-induced structural transformation from cubic to rhombohedral. In contrast, a cubic structure was retained for high KN contents, giving rise to reversible phase switching evidenced by constricted P-E hysteresis loops. Similar behaviour was observed for NBT-NN system. An 'in-situ' electric field poling experiment was conducted using high energy synchrotron XRD. In certain NBT-KN compositions the structural transformation, from cubic to mixed phase cubic+rhombohedral and finally single phase rhombohedral, occurred progressively with increasing cycles of a bipolar electric field. Similar behaviour was observed for NBT-NN compositions having low NN contents. Furthermore, the distributions of domain orientation and lattice strain over a range of orientations relative to the poling direction were determined for NBT-KN, NBT-NN and NBT-BT ceramics exhibiting the rhombohedral phase. By combining the structural information with the results of dielectric and ferroelectric measurements, a phase diagram was constructed to illustrate the influence of temperature and composition on the stability of the metastable ferroelectric and relaxor ferroelectric states for the NBT-KN system. Furthermore, the phase transition temperatures obtained from dielectric measurements were correlated with the ferroelectric and thermal depolarisation characteristics for each of the NBT-KN, NBT-NN and NBT-BT systems.

Abstract:
In this paper, I examine the existence and roles of state dependence and switching costs in the mass transition from MySpace to Facebook during the 2007-2008 time period. Using a dataset that compiles individual browsing behavior and a discrete multinomial logit model, I find precise, yet extremely small amounts of state dependence for users of only MySpace, of only Facebook, and users of both MySpace and Facebook. Positive state dependence directly implies the existence of switching costs for each firm. While there is an abundance of literature regarding switching costs in the brick and mortar setting with tangible products and services, my work extends similar analysis to the relatively new online, social networking industry by studying consumer usage trends of the two networking powerhouses: MySpace and Facebook.

Cuadros, O. Carlos E. "Modified Space Vector Modulation for a Zero-Voltage Transition Three-Phase to DC Bi-directional Converter." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36712.

Abstract:
A modified space vector modulation algorithm for a zero-voltage transition three-phase voltage source inverter/boost rectifier is presented. The converter is intended for high performance medium power applications requiring bi-directional power flow. The proposed modified space vector modulation allows the main switches to be operated with constant frequency and soft switching for any phase shift between the three-phase currents and voltages. The modulation algorithm also eliminates any low frequency distortion caused by the zero-voltage transition and can be extended to other soft-switching PWM three-phase converters. Experimental verification of the proposed algorithm is also presented as well as a comparison to the hard switched PWM converter.

Dong, Wei. "Analysis and Evaluation of Soft-switching Inverter Techniques in Electric Vehicle Applications." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28859.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents the systematic analysis and the critical assessment of the AC side soft-switching inverters in electric vehicle (EV) applications. Although numerous soft-switching inverter techniques were claimed to improve the inverter performance, compared with the conventional hard-switching inverter, there is the lack of comprehensive investigations of analyzing and evaluating the performance of soft-switching inverters. Starting with an efficiency comparison of a variety of the soft-switching inverters using analytical calculation, the dissertation first reveals the effects of the auxiliary circuit's operation and control on the loss reduction. Three types of soft-switching inverters realizing the zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) or zero-current-transition (ZCT) operation are identified to achieve high efficiency operation. Then one hard-switching inverter and the chosen soft-switching inverters are designed and implemented with the 55 kW power rating for the small duty EV application. The experimental evaluations on the dynamometer provide the accurate description of the performance of the soft-switching inverters in terms of the loss reductions, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise, the total harmonic distortion (THD) and the control complexity. An analysis of the harmonic distortion caused by short pulses is presented and a space vector modulation scheme is proposed to alleviate the effect. To effectively analyze the soft-switching inverters' performance, a simulation based electrical modeling methodology is developed. Not only it extends the EMI noise analysis to the higher frequency region, but also predicts the stress and the switching losses accurately. Three major modeling tasks are accomplished. First, to address the issues of complicated existing scheme, a new parameter extraction scheme is proposed to establish the physics-based IGBT model. Second, the impedance based measurement method is developed to derive the internal parasitic parameters of the half-bridge modules. Third, the finite element analysis software is used to develop the model for the laminated bus bar including the coupling effects of different phases. Experimental results from the single-leg operation and the three-phase inverter operation verify the effectiveness of the presented systematic electrical modeling approach. With the analytical tools verified by the testing results, the performance analysis is further extended to different power ratings and different bus voltage designs.

Li, Yong. "Unified zero-current-transition techniques for high-power three-phase PWM inverters." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26843.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is devoted to a unified and comprehensive study of zero-current-transition (ZCT) soft-switching techniques for high-power three-phase PWM inverter applications. Major efforts in this study are as follows: 1) Conception of one new ZCT scheme and one new ZCT topology; 2) Systematic comparison of a family of ZCT inverters; 3) Design, implementation and experimental evaluation of two 55-kW prototype inverters for electric vehicle (EV) motor drives that are developed based on the proposed ZCT concepts; and 4) Investigation of the ZCT concepts in megawatts high-frequency power conversions. The proposed ZCT techniques are also applicable to three-phase power-factor-correction (PFC) rectifiers. In order to minimize switching losses, this work first proposes a new control scheme for an existing three-phase ZCT inverter circuit that uses six auxiliary switches. The proposed scheme, called the six-switch ZV/ZCT, enables all main switches, diodes and auxiliary switches to be turned off under zero-current conditions, and in the meantime provides an opportunity to achieve zero-voltage turn-on for the main switches. Meanwhile, it requires no modification to normal PWM algorithms. Compared with existing ZCT schemes, the diode reverse-recovery current is reduced significantly, the switching turn-on loss is reduced by 50%, the resonant capacitor voltage stress is reduced by 30%, and the current and thermal stresses in the auxiliary switches are evenly distributed. However, a big drawback of the six-switch ZV/ZCT topology, as well as of other types of soft-switching topologies using six auxiliary switches, is the high cost and large space associated with the auxiliary switches. To overcome this drawback, this work further proposes a new three-phase ZCT inverter topology that uses only three auxiliary switches-- the three-switch ZCT. The significance of the proposed three-switch ZCT topology is that, among three-phase soft-switching inverters developed so far, this is the only one that uses fewer than six auxiliary switches and still has the following three features: 1) soft commutation for all main switches, diodes and auxiliary switches in all operation modes; 2) no modification to normal PWM algorithms; and 3) in practical implementations, no need for extra resonant current sensing, saturable cores, or snubbers to protect the auxiliary switches. The proposed six-switch ZV/ZCT and three-switch ZCT inverters, together with existing ZCT inverters, constitute a family of three-phase ZCT inverters. To explore the fundamental properties of these inverters, a systematic comparative study is conducted. A simplified equivalent circuit is developed to unify common traits of ZCT commutations. With the visual aid of state planes, the evolution of the family of ZCT inverters is examined, and their differences and connections are identified. Behaviors of individual inverters, including switching conditions, circulating energy, and device/component stresses, are compared. Based on the proposed six-switch ZV/ZCT and three-switch ZCT techniques, two 55-kW prototype inverters for EV traction motor drives have been built and tested to the full-power level with a closed-loop controlled induction motor dynamometer. The desired ZCT soft-switching features are realized together with motor drive functions. A research effort is carried out to develop a systematic and practical design methodology for the ZCT inverters, and an experimental evaluation of the ZCT techniques in the EV motor drive application is conducted. The design approach integrates system optimization with characterizations of the main IGBT device under the ZCT conditions, selection, testing and characterization of the auxiliary devices, design and selection of the resonant inductors and capacitors, inverter loss modeling and numerical analysis, system-level operation aspects, and layout and parasitic considerations. Different design aspects between these two ZCT inverters are compared and elaborated. The complexity of the 55-kW prototype implementations is compared as well. Efficiencies are measured and compared under a group of torque/speed points for typical EV drive cycles. Megawatts high-frequency power conversion is another potential application of the ZCT techniques. The integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) device is tested and characterized under the proposed six-switch ZV/ZCT condition, and the test shows promising results in reducing switching losses and stresses. Improvements in the IGCT switching frequency and simplification of the cooling requirements under ZCT operations are discussed. In addition, a generalized ZCT cell concept is developed based on the proposed three-switch ZCT topology. This concept leads to the discovery of a family of simplified multilevel soft-switching inverters that reduce the number of auxiliary switches by half, and still maintain desirable features.

Abstract:
In this PhD work, we study the field-effect modulated two-dimensional superconductivity at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 oxides hetero-interface. When one grows epitaxially a few unit cells thin film of LaAlO3 on a SrTiO3 substrate, the interface becomes conducting, and even superconducting below 300mK, although these two perovskite oxides are insulators. The properties of this high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas – superconductivity and strong Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling - can be field-effect modulated by the mean of a Back Gate. We have investigated this two-dimensional superconductivity through three different experimental approaches : the temperature-driven transition with the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless model including an inhomogeneous distribution of rigidity ; the finite-size scaling analysis of the superconductor-to-insulator quantum phase transition induced by a perpendicular magnetic field using the model developed by Spivak, Oreto and Kivelson ; and finally the measure of the hysteretic and stochastic properties of the critical current in the framework of the RCSJ model. We hence propose to consider this 2D electron gas as an inhomogeneous network of superconducting puddles coupled to one another by Josephson effect through a normal metallic matrix, which transition is dominated by the XY model of the phase fluctuations. Finally, we demonstrated for the first time the possibility of Top Gated-control of this interface, and we investigated the compared effects of Top and Back Gating

Abstract:
Housing prices are of crucial importance in financial stability management. The severe financial crises that originated in the housing market in the US and subsequently spread throughout the world highlighted the crucial role that the housing market plays in preserving financial stability. After the severe housing market crash, many financial institutions in the US suffered from high default rates, severe liquidity shortages, and even bankruptcy. Against this background, researchers have sought to use econometric models to capture and forecast prices of homes. Available empirical research indicates that nonlinear models may be suitable for modelling price cycles. Accordingly, this thesis focuses primarily on using nonlinear models to empirically investigate cyclical patterns in housing prices. More specifically, the content of this thesis can be summarised in three essays which complement the existing literature on price modelling by using nonlinear models. The first essay contributes to the literature by testing the ability of regime switching models to capture and forecast house prices. The second essay examines the impact of banking factors on house price fluctuations. To account for house price characteristics, the regime switching model and generalised autoregressive conditionally heteroscedastic (GARCH) in-mean model have been used. The final essay investigates the effect of structural breaks on the unit root test and shows that a time-varying GARCH in-mean model can be used to estimate the housing price cycle in the UK.

Abstract:
Problem statement: Accurate and reliable forecasts of trends in the housing market can be useful information for market participants as well as policy makers. This information may be useful to minimize risk related to market uncertainty. Since the burst of the housing bubble in the early 1990s the price level of single-family houses has risen sharply in Sweden. The Swedish housing market has experienced an unusually long period of high growth rates in transaction prices which has opened up for discussions about the risk of another housing bubble. Business and property cycles have shown to contain asymmetries, which linear models are unable to pick up and therefore inappropriate to analyze cycles. Approach: Therefore, this study uses non-linear models which are able to pick up the asymmetries. The estimated models are variations of the Markov-switching regression model, i.e. the Markov-switching autoregressive (MS-AR) model and the Markov-switching dynamic regression (MS-DR) model. Results: Our ndings show that the MS-AR(4) model allowing for varying variance across regimes estimated using the growth rate of FASTPI produce superior forecasts over other MSAR models as well as variations of the MS-DR model. The average expected duration to remain in a positive growth regime is between 6.3 and 7.3 years and the average expected duration to remain in a negative growth regime is between 1.2 to 2.5 years. Conclusion: The next regime shift in the Swedish housing market is projected to occur between 2018 and 2019, counting the contraction period in 2012 as the most recent negative regime. Our ndings support other studies ndings which indicate that the longer the market has remained in one state, the greater is the risk for a regime shift.

Abstract:
In a study involving two languages: French and Arabic, this thesis examines the patterns and meanings of Arabic religious expressions as a code alternation practice in Algerian television interviews. It is concerned with investigating what participants may accomplish by selecting Arabic over French in some points of interaction to deploy religious expressions in their utterances. It also aims at exploring what the function is that these expressions may achieve for the organization of talk-in-interaction. Based on their manifestation in the participants’ utterances, the current study identifies four categories of the use of religious expressions in Algerian media talk where they appear as: transition words to switch to Arabic to keep going on in interaction; in adjacency pairs as a result of a reciprocal invocation between participants; devices to hold the floor and continue turns in interaction; and finally, signals for closing turns and shifting topics where a speakership change or a move to a new topic is possible.

Yu, Huijie. "Driver Based Soft Switch for Pulse-Width-Modulated Power Converters." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26399.

Abstract:
The work in this dissertation presents the first attempt in the literature to propose the concept of â soft switchâ . The goal of â soft switchâ is to develop a standard PWM switch cell with built-in adaptive soft switching capabilities. Just like a regular switch, only one PWM signal is needed to drive the soft switch under soft switching condition. The core technique in soft switch development is a built-in adaptive soft switching circuit with minimized circulation energy. The necessity of minimizing circulation energy is first analyzed. The design and implementation of a universal controller for implementation of variable timing control to minimize circulation energy is presented. The controller has been tested successfully with three different soft switching inverters for electric vehicles application in the Partnership for a New Generation Vehicles (PNGV) project. To simplify the control, several methods to achieve soft switching with fixed timing control are proposed by analyzing a family of zero-voltage switching converters. The driver based soft switch concept was originated from development of a base driver circuit for current driven bipolar junction transistor (BJT). A new insulated-gate-bipolar-transistor (IGBT) and power metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistor (MOSFET) gated transistor (IMGT) base drive structure was initially proposed for a high power SiC BJT. The proposed base drive method drives SiC BJTs in a way similar to a Darlington transistor. With some modification, a new base driver structure can adaptively achieve zero voltage turn-on for BJT at all load current range with one single gate. The proposed gate driver based soft switching method is verified by experimental test with both Si and SiC BJT. The idea is then broadened for â soft switchâ implementation. The whole soft switched BJT (SSBJT) structure behaves like a voltage-driven soft switch. The new structure has potentially inherent soft transition property with reduced stress and switching loss. The basic concept of the current driven soft switch is then extended to a voltage-driven device such as IGBT and MOSFET. The key feature and requirement of the soft switch is outlined. A new coupled inductor based soft switching cell is proposed. The proposed zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) cell serves as a good candidate for the development of soft switch. The â Equivalent Inductorâ and state plane based analysis method are used to simply the analysis of coupled inductor based zero-voltage switching scheme. With the proposed analysis method, the operational property of the ZVT cell can be identified without solving complicated differential equations. Detailed analysis and design is proposed for a 3kW boost converter example. With the proposed soft switch design, the boost converter can achieve up to 98.9% efficiency over a wide operation range with a single gate drive. A high power inverter with coupled inductor scheme is also designed with simple control compared to the earlier implementation. A family of soft-switching converters using the proposed â soft switchâ cell can be developed by replacing the conventional PWM switch with the proposed soft switch.

This work assesses the forecasts of three nonlinear methods — Markov Switching Autoregressive Model, Logistic Smooth Transition Autoregressive Model, and Autometrics with Dummy Saturation — for the Brazilian monthly industrial production and tests if they are more accurate than those of naive predictors such as the autoregressive model of order p and the double differencing device. The results show that the step dummy saturation and the logistic smooth transition autoregressive can be superior to the double differencing device, but the linear autoregressive model is more accurate than all the other methods analyzed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this study, the oxygen-deficient TiO2, SrTiO3 systems and transition metal ion (Cr or V) doped TiO2, SrTiO3 and SrZrO3 systems have been investigated. We prepared samples as polycrystals, single crystals and thin films for various desires. Their structural, physical and electronic properties were measured by bulk-sensitive techniques (X-Ray Diffraction, SQUID and Electro Paramagnetic Resonance) or surface-sensitive techniques (Photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy). The measurement of SQUID and EPR showed not only their magnetic properties but also the valence state of Cr dopant. We verified the valence state of Cr ions in oxides and found the key parameters of sample synthesis which control the valence state of Cr ions. Segregated phases such as SrCrO4 were formed when the samples were synthesized under O2 rich environment. The surface properties of Cr doped SrZrO3 films are also discussed. We found the synthesis conditions which influence on not only the behavior of Cr ions but also the resistive-switching behaviors. Various resistive-switching behaviors seem to depend on the surface chemistry of films. We found that the accumulation of Cr3+ on film surface provides a clean interface without any non-stoichiometric oxides and that this sharp interface termination results in a good performance of resistive-switching.

Abstract:
This research consists of two essays. The first essay entitled” Stock Return Forecasting with Sum-of-the-Parts Methodology: Evidence from Around the World”, examines forecasting ability of stock returns by employing the sum-of-the-parts (SOP) modeling technique introduced by Ferreira and Santa-Clara (2011).This approach decomposes return into three components of growth in price-earnings ratio, earnings growth, and dividend-price ratio. Each component is forecasted separately and fitted values are used in forecast model to predict stock return. We conduct a series of one-step ahead recursive forecasts for a wide range of developed and emerging markets over the period February 1995 through November 2014. Decomposed return components are forecasted separately using a list of financial variables and the fitted values from the best estimators are used according to out-of-sample performance. Our findings show that the SOP method with financial variables outperforms the historical sample mean for the majority of countries. Second essay entitled,” Equity Premium Predictability under Regime Shifts: International Evidence”, utilizes the modified version of the dividend-price ratio that alleviates some econometric concerns in the literature regarding the non-stationary and persistent predictor when forecasting international equity premium across different regimes. We employ Markov switching technique to address the issue of non-linearity between the equity premium and the predictor. The results show different patterns of equity premium predictability over the regimes across countries by the modified ratio as predictor. In addition, transition probability analysis show the adverse effect of financial crisis on regime transition probabilities by increasing the probability of switching between regimes post-crisis 2007 implying higher risk perceived by investors as a result of uncertainty inherent in regime transitions.

Abstract:
Development of the faster and denser magnetic memory storage elements has been an active area of research since early 20th century. The path of research on magnetization manipulation began with firstly changing the magnetization state of a medium in an external magnetic field, then heating of a medium and magnetizing with a permanent magnet was explored, while the latest efforts have been focused on switching the magnetization only by a polarized laser light. Nowadays due to the technological advancement of lasers and material fabrication methods, the search and development process of magnetic memory elements is much faster. The implementation of such technologies, however, relies on finding suitable magnetic materials which would allow for a fast magnetization writing and read-out processes and would remain magnetized, even with the reduced dimensions. Ferrimagnetic rare Earth - transition metal (RE-TM) alloys have been used for fabricating magneto-optical recording media already since the 1990’s. Relatively recently, in 2007, it was demonstrated that the ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloy magnetization state can be switched using only circularly polarized laser light. Hence, ferrimagnetic RE-TMalloys could be suitable candidates for all-optical light-induced magnetization switching (AOS), without any external magnetic field. Another combination of RE-TM alloys that was shown to exhibit AOS is ferrimagnetic amorphous alloys containing terbium and cobalt (Tb:Co). They have attracted attention due to their strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, high magneto-optical activity and amorphicity, which makes them attractive from a fabrication point of view since a variety of substrates and buffer layers could be used for growing such layers. In this Thesis, TbCo alloys are investigated in order to examine how the magnetic, optical and magneto-optical properties could be tuned by varying the elemental ratio and film thickness. The main question that was addressed here was whether such a system is suitable for fabrication of nanosized magnetic elements as the building blocks for the magnetic memory applications. TbCo alloys were prepared as thin films by magnetron co-sputtering method onto different substrates and buffer layers. Films were characterized using a variety of techniques such as an ion beam analysis, an x-ray reflectivity and diffraction, and magneto-optical characterization techniques. It was observed that the properties of such alloys depend not only on the Tb:Co ratio but also on the film thickness and an underlying buffer layer. Magnetization compensation point, at which the magnetization of a film is zero, as in an antiferromagnet, can be modified depending on the buffer layer. All-optical switching (AOS) of magnetization experiments were performed on the fabricated samples. It was determined that AOS with at least 50-100 laserpulses can be achieved for the films grown directly onto fused silica substrates and with the compositions above the magnetization compensation point at room temperature, in the range of 24 - 30 at.% Tb. In the Outlook, the initial efforts of patterning the films into the arrays of nanosized elements are presented. It is demonstrated that after the lithographic patterning of the films, the resulting nanosized elements remained out-of-plane magnetized. In this work it is shown that the ferrimagnetic TbCo alloy system is a potential candidate material for bothfacilitating AOS and the fabrication of arrays of nanomagnets. Combining the TbCo alloys, which show AOS, together with a suitable buffer layer and patterning the hybrid structure, could enable selective element-by-element magnetization switching for the magnetic memorystorage devices.

Abstract:
In the last few years, many studies have been dedicated to spin-crossover compounds because of their potential application in data-storage systems. In such systems, optical switching is particularly promising. This work deals with the photo-induced phenomenon encountered in spin crossover systems, more specifically, the effects of metal dilution on the LIESST temperature. The main objective is to better define the parameters that govern T (LIESST). Various experimental studies were performed on mononuclear 0D compounds, polymeric 1D systems and polynuclear systems. The analysis of all photomagnetic properties has shown that T(LIESST) is not affected by the dilution and suggests that this parameter is govern at the molecular scale and depends very few of intermolecular interactions

Abstract:
This thesis examines converter topologies suitable for Module Integrated Converters (MICs) in grid interactive photovoltaic (PV) systems, and makes a contribution to the development of the MIC topologies based on the two-inductor boost converter, which has received less research interest than other well known converters. The thesis provides a detailed analysis of the resonant two-inductor boost converter in the MIC implementations with intermediate constant DC links. Under variable frequency control, this converter is able to operate with a variable DC gain while maintaining the resonant condition. A similar study is also provided for the resonant two-inductor boost converter with the voltage clamp, which aims to increase the output voltage range while reducing the switch voltage stress. An operating point with minimized power loss can be also established under the fixed load condition. Both the hard-switched and the soft-switched current fed two-inductor boost converters are developed for the MIC implementations with unfolding stages. Nondissipative snubbers and a resonant transition gate drive circuit are respectively employed in the two converters to minimize the power loss. The simulation study of a frequency-changer-based two-inductor boost converter is also provided. This converter features a small non-polarised capacitor in a second phase output to provide the power balance in single phase inverter applications. Four magnetic integration solutions for the two-inductor boost converter have also been presented and they are promising in reducing the converter size and power loss.

The goal of this thesis is to propose more flexible regime-switching models combining the ideas from the SETAR, STAR, and ANN specifications. The models discussed in this thesis are models with multi-regimes and with the transition between regimes controlled by a linear combination of known variables. A modelling cycle procedure, based on the work of Teräsvirta and Lin (1993), Eitrheim and Teräsvirta (1996), and Rech, Teräsvirta and Tschernig (1999), consisting of the stages of model specification, parameter estimation, and model evaluation, is developed allowing the practitioner to choose among different alternatives during the modelling cycle. Monte-Carlo simulations and real applications are used to evaluate the performance of the techniques developed here and they suggested that the theory is useful and the proposed models thus seems to be an effective tool for the practicing time series analysts.

Abstract:
Proteins are involved in numerous functions in the human body, including chemical transport, molecular recognition, and catalysis. To perform their function most proteins must adopt a specific structure (often referred to as the folded structure). A microscopic description of folding is an important prerequisite for elucidating the underlying basis of protein misfolding and rational drug design. However, protein folding occurs on heterogeneous length and time scales, presenting a grand challenge to both experiments and simulations. In computer simulations, challenges are generally mitigated by adopting coarse-grained descriptions of the physical environment, employing enhanced sampling strategies, and improving computing code and hardware. While significant advances have been made in these areas, for numerous systems a large spatiotemporal gap between experiment and simulations still exists, due to the limited time and length scales achieved by simulation, and the inability of many experimental techniques to probe fast motions and short distances. In this thesis, kinetic transition networks (KTNs) are constructed for various protein folding systems, via approaches based on the potential energy landscape (PEL) framework. By applying geometry optimisation techniques, the PEL is discretised into stationary points (i.e.~low-energy minima and the transition states that connect them). Essentially, minima characterise the low-lying regions of the PEL (thermodynamics) and transition states encode the motion between these regions (dynamics). Principles from statistical mechanics and unimolecular rate theory may then be employed to derive free energy surfaces and folding rates, respectively, from the KTN. Furthermore, the PEL framework can take advantage of parallel and distributed computing, since stationary points from separate simulations can be easily integrated into one KTN. Moreover, the use of geometry optimisation facilitates greater conformational sampling than conventional techniques based on molecular dynamics. Accordingly, this framework presents an appealing means of probing complex processes, such as protein folding. In this dissertation, we demonstrate the application of state-of-the-art theory, combining PEL analysis and KTNs to three diverse protein systems. First, to improve the efficiency of protein folding simulations, the intrinsic rigidity of proteins is exploited by implementing a local rigid body (LRB) approach. The LRB approach effectively integrates out irrelevant degrees of freedom from the geometry optimisation procedure and further accelerates conformational sampling. The effects of this approach on the underlying PEL are analysed in a systematic fashion for a model protein (tryptophan zipper\,1). We demonstrate that conservative local rigidification can reproduce the thermodynamic and dynamic properties for the model protein. Next, the PEL framework is employed to model large-scale conformational changes in proteins, which have conventionally been difficult to probe in silico. Methods based on geometry optimisation have proved useful in overcoming the broken ergodicity issue, which is associated with proteins that switch morphology. The latest PEL-based approaches are utilised to investigate the most extreme case of fold-switching found in the literature:~the α-helical hairpin to β-barrel transition of the C-terminal domain of RfaH, a bacterial transcription factor. PEL techniques are employed to construct the free energy landscape (FEL) for the refolding process and to discover mechanistic details of the transition at an atomistic level. The final part of the thesis focuses on modelling intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Due to their inherent structural plasticity, IDPs are generally difficult to characterise, both experimentally and via simulations. An approach for studying IDPs within the PEL framework is implemented and tested with various contemporary potential energy functions. The cytoplasmic tail of the human cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4), implicated in HIV-1 infection, is characterised. Metastable states identified on the FEL help to unify, and are consistent with, several earlier predictions.

Abstract:
This Ph.D. thesis composed by three chapters contributes to the development of model selection in GARCH-type models. The first chapter investigates whether the most common selection criteria lead to choose the right specification in a regime switching framework. We propose simulation experiments which reveal the inefficiency of some selection criteria in particular cases which lead to misspecification. Depending on the Data Generating Process used in the experiments, great care is needed when choosing a criterion. In the second chapter, a misspecication test for GARCH-type models is presented. We propose a Lagrange Multiplier type test based on a Taylor expansion to distinguish between (G)ARCH models and unknown nonlinear GARCH-type models. This test can be seen as a general misspecication test. We investigate the size and the power of this test through Monte Carlo experiments. We show the usefulness of our test with an illustrative empirical example based on daily exchange rate returns. In the third chapter, we study the impact of oil price returns on sovereign Credit Default Swaps (CDS) spreads for two major oil producers, Russia and Venezuela. Using daily spreads from 2008 to 2015, we find that crude oil price returns are a critical determinant of Venezuela CDS spreads changes, but does not explain significantly Russian CDS spreads. Indeed, oil prices seem to impact Russian CDS spreads through the exchange rates canal. Finally, we propose as an appendix the manual of the MSGtool, a MATLAB toolbox, which provides a collection of functions for the simulation and estimation of a large variety of Markov Switching GARCH (MSG) models

Abstract:
Investigation of the iron(II) metal-centered spin-crossover core coordinate with photo-active ligands (tran / cis isomerization) and study of the ligand-driven light-induced spin change (LD-LISC) properties with functionalized iron(II) complexes in the form of nanoparticles dispersed in transparent thin films. For this investigation, we have selected a set of mononuclear complexes incorporating a bipyridine ligand substituted either with a methyl group (electronic and structural function) or a styryl group (photoactivable function). The introduction in the coordination sphere of three (strong ligand-field case) or two (intermediate ligand-field strength) bipyridine ligands (with NCSe- co-ligands) has allowed the modulation of the ligand-field strength experienced by the metal ion in different systems. Optical and thermal switching properties of solids have been investigated in polycrystalline powders and in dispersion of size-reduced objects (micro-, nano-particles).We have presented elaboration and study of micro- and nanoparticles, non-ionic mononuclear FeII complexes including bidentate ligand (4,4’-methyl-2,2’-bipyridine, Me2-bpy) have been selected. The synthesis of nano- and micro-objects has required the adaptation of the method (sudden precipitation in antisolvent). It was achieved with ionic [Fe(L)3](NCSe)2 precursors by playing with chemical equilibrium for inducing the precipitation of related neutral Fe(L)2(NCSe)2 species. Nano- and micro-crystals of Fe(Me2-bpy)2(NCSe)2 with sizes 56-1200 nm were characterized and then highly diluted in polymeric thin films for optimizing light absorption and investigating photoswitching processes. Fe(Me2-bpy)2(NCSe)2) in the form of nano-and micro-particles, processed in thin polymeric films were shown to exhibit thermal spin-crossover centered at temperatures higher than room temperature; no significant effect of environment was detected. We have studied the photochemical reactivity of the ionic precusors [Fe(msbpy)3](NCSe)2 (msbpy = trans- and cis-isomers of 4-methyl-4’-styryl-2,2’-bipyridine,) was first probed in solution. It has been established that the cis to trans isomerization of 4-methyl-4’-styryl-2,2’-bipyidine takes place in a quantitative way when the diamagnetic FeII complex was exposed to a blue light (405 nm); this reaction can be partly reversed with a UV excitation. We have elaborated spin-crossover nanoparticles based on the Fe(II) complexes are described; the switching of these particles (60nm) embedded in PMMA thin films and the LD-LISC effect are investigated. In the highly confined environment of nanoparticles, the FeII(t-msbpy)2(NCSe)2 complex also reacts upon irradiation. The combination of UV-Vis, Raman and photomagnetic measurements of the highly diluted materials has allowed us to analyze the effect of light irradiation and the spin-state switching behavior. The study of FeII(t-msbpy)2(NCSe)2 has shown the occurrence at room temperature of different processes depending on the excitation wavelength: a ligand-centered process (trans-to-cis isomerization, 365 nm) and a metal-centered one (resulting in a MLCT change, 405 nm)

Abstract:
A polymer brush is formed by densely grafting the chain ends of polymers onto a surface. This tethering of the long macromolecules has considerable influence on the surface properties, which can be additionally modified by changing the environmental conditions. In this context it is of special interest to understand and control the behavior of the grafted layer and to create surfaces that display a desired response to external stimulation. The present work studies densely grafted polymer brushes and the effects that such an environment imposes on an individual chain molecule in the grafted layer. For this purpose we developed a new self-consistent field approach to describe mixtures of heterogeneous chains comprised of differently sized hard spheres. Applying this method to the case of polymer brushes we consider a fraction of grafted molecules to be different from the majority brush chains. The modification of these chains includes a variation in the degree of polymerization, a different solvent selectivity behavior and a variable size of the free end-monomer. Due to the computational efficiency of the present approach, as compared for example to direct simulation methods, we can study the conformations of the modified 'guest' chains systematically in dependence of the relevant parameters. With respect to brush profile and the distribution of the free chain ends the new method shows very good quantitative agreement with corresponding simulation results. We also confirm the observation that these 'guest' chains can undergo a conformational transition depending on the type of modification and the solvent quality. For the cases studied in the present work we analyze the conditions to achieve a most sensitive behavior of this conformational switching. In addition, an analytical model is proposed to describe this effect. We compare its predictions to the numerical results and find good agreement.

Abstract:
The issue of international transmission cycles has considerably received attention due to the increasing economic and financial globalization. Our thesis is in line with the literature dedicated to this question. More specifically, we focusour attention on the analysis of the transmission cycle of the United States to emerging countries. It consists of three chapters. The first one, based on a new econometric approach in terms of Global VAR model, aims to study the effect of shocks from the U.S. to emerging countries. The main resultconfirms the idea that the United States plays an important role in the transmission of economic cycles given their weight in the world economy. The second chapter proposes to study the financial transmission of the United States by focusing on the subprime crisis on these countries. The estimation of time varyingtransitionprobability (TVTP) Markov switchingmodel indicates that the persistence of financial stress, the tightening of the conditions of the credit and the increase of the risk of Banking solvency constitute the major determinants of the financial transmission. The US stock market volatility is the key factor transmission channel for all the studied countries. The third chapter is devoted to investigate whether emerging countries are able to adopt countercyclical fiscal policies to mitigate the impact from outside. Using the threshold model with smooth transition panel ( the PSTR model ), this chapter confirms that fiscal policy in emerging countries is procyclicalin the slowdown periodand also when public debt exceeds the critical threshold. Therefore, a strong fiscal position is fundamental to ensure macroeconomic stability

Abstract:
In this work, the effect of epitaxial strain on the properties of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric perovskite thin films is studied. Single-crystalline piezoelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.72Ti0.28O3 (001) substrates (PMN-PT) are utilized to reversibly change the biaxial strain state of the films. The measurements performed by this “dynamic” approach are complemented by studying statically strained films grown on LaAlxSc1-xO3 buffer layers with deliberately tuned lattice misfit. Three different material systems are investigated: the ferromagnetic oxides La0.8Sr0.2CoO3 and SrRuO3 and the ferroelectric compound Pb(Zr,Ti)O3. In case of La0.8Sr0.2CoO3 a strain-induced transition from the known ferromagnetic phase to a magnetically less ordered spinglas-like phase is observed. No indications for an effect on the Co spin state are found. In epitaxial SrRuO3 films tensile strain is causing a structural phase transition from the bulk-like orthorhombic structure to an out-of-plane oriented tetragonal phase. The magnetic easy axis is in the film plane. Reversible strain experiments show a significant effect on the ferromagnetic ordering temperature and point to a small change of the magnetic moment. The strain effect on the electric transport properties is also determined. Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 as a standard ferroelectric material is used to study the influence of biaxial strain on the ferroelectric switching behaviour of thin films for the first time. At small electric fields the measurements reveal the typical signs of creep-like domain wall motion caused by wall pinning. In this regime the switching process is accelerated strongly under piezo-compression. For higher electric fields a transition of the domain wall motion to the depinning regime is observed. Here, the switching kinetics is slowed down moderately by compressive strain

Abstract:

With the purpose of coping with the intertwined challenges of energy depletion, environmental degradation and public health concerns in the Chinese-specific context in response to sustainable development, we focus on investigating China’s energy, environment and health policies. In chapter 1, we provide an overview of China’s energy, environment and health policies over the past 20 years in order to know about the future policy directions to which the government has not given a sufficient attention. In the following three chapters, we provide a series of empirical studies so as to derive some useful policy implications. In chapter 2, we investigate the impact of urbanization, industrial structure adjustment, energy price and export on provincial aggregate and disaggregate energy intensities. In chapter 3, we study the factors explaining the switches from dirty to clean fuel sources in rural households. In chapter 4, we examine the joint effects of environmental hazards, individual income and health policies on the health status of Chinese adults. Our empirical findings particularly suggest integrating urban development into the strategy of energy saving; considering the complex substitutions/complementarities among energy sources and between energy and food for rural households; aligning the environment, energy and food policies with health policies

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to contribute to previous research on the subject of language transition in Tanzania. The aim is also that the information gained in this study can be used to improve students' prospects when they undergo the linguistic transition from primary school to secondary school. This is a qualitative study with quantitative elements, using method triangulation, which examines how students experience the linguistic transition from Kiswahili to English and how it affects them. The study also highlights the students' own opinions about which language they would prefer as the language of instruction in secondary school. Relevant information about the history of Tanzania and the linguistic situation in the country are outlined. Previous research on the subject is also presented. The two theories that are used are Bourdieu’s social theory and Said's theory of Orientalism. The study uses focus groups and surveys in oder to answer the questions at hand. The research itself is conducted in two government schools in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The three questions at issue are as follows: Do the students feel that they have sufficient knowledge of English in order to be ready for the transition of the language of instruction from Kiswahili to English in secondary school? How do the students perceive that the transition of languages affects their performance in school and in their future? If the students had the opportunity to choose, which language would they prefer as the language of instruction in Secondary school in Tanzania? The conclusions are that the students feel that the linguistic transition is difficult and that they lack sufficient knowledge of English. Although several of the students struggle with the vocabulary and the pronunciation, they feel that English is the path to higher education and a good job. These are contributing factors to the fact that the majority of the students prefer English as their language of instruction in secondary school, to their own national language, Kiswahili.

Abstract:
By contrasting "the passion for present enjoyment" to "desire to improve our condition", Adam Smith pointed out in 1776, the importance of intertemporal preferences to explain the wealth and prosperity of nations. In the microeconomic, the intertemporal choices modelling leads to analyse of psychological interest rate expressed by the economic agent when he trades off between present consumption unit and future consumption unit. Intertemporal trade-off and impatience effects are present in two major behavioural models in labour economics: human capital theory and job search theory. However, in the most models of these theories, the intertemporal preference analysis presents two problems. The first problem is related to intertemporal preferences modelling, which is limited to only the introduction of a discount factor. The second problem is that the impatience behaviour is unobservable factor in the econometrics studies. In this thesis, we focus a particular aspect of intertemporal preferences role on the quality of labour market insertion. Specifically, we highlight the impact of intertemporal preferences (impatience) on the exit rate from unemployment, on the different destinations in the transition from unemployment to employment, and finally, on the decision to pursue vocational training and its impact on wages in employment

Abstract:
Multi functional health monitoring wearable devices are quite prominent these days. Usually these devices are battery-operated and consequently are limited by their battery life (from few hours to a few weeks depending on the application). Of late, it was realized that these devices, which are currently being operated at fixed voltage and frequency, are capable of operating at multiple voltages and frequencies. By switching these voltages and frequencies to lower values based upon power requirements, these devices can achieve tremendous benefits in the form of energy savings. Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) techniques have proven to be handy in this situation for an efficient trade-off between energy and timely behavior. Within imec, wearable devices make use of the indigenously developed MUSEIC v2 (Multi Sensor Integrated circuit version 2.0). This system is optimized for efficient and accurate collection, processing, and transfer of data from multiple (health) sensors. MUSEIC v2 has limited means in controlling the voltage and frequency dynamically. In this thesis we explore how traditional DVFS techniques can be applied to the MUSEIC v2. Experiments were conducted to find out the optimum power modes to efficiently operate and also to scale up-down the supply voltage and frequency. Considering the overhead caused when switching voltage and frequency, transition analysis was also done. Real-time and non real-time benchmarks were implemented based on these techniques and their performance results were obtained and analyzed. In this process, several state of the art scheduling algorithms and scaling techniques were reviewed in identifying a suitable technique. Using our proposed scaling technique implementation, we have achieved 86.95% power reduction in average, in contrast to the conventional way of the MUSEIC v2 chip’s processor operating at a fixed voltage and frequency. Techniques that include light sleep and deep sleep mode were also studied and implemented, which tested the system’s capability in accommodating Dynamic Power Management (DPM) techniques that can achieve greater benefits. A novel approach for implementing the deep sleep mechanism was also proposed and found that it can obtain up to 71.54% power savings, when compared to a traditional way of executing deep sleep mode.
