Abstract:
The Thesis focuses on Smectic-A (SmA) liquid crystals' (LCs) functional behaviour in order to understand if this will be the next generation product that could improve the daily life of the society. The optical properties of this liquid crystal are by far the best compared to the products available in the market, i.e., the light transmittance in transparent state is >85 % and in scatter state <2 %. Enabling the LC to be used for a variety of purposes, such as smart windows to scatter light on a sunny day or provide a sense of privacy in an open type office space. An in-depth literature review discusses the existing studies, obtained experimental data and attempts to develop functional products. The main unresolved problems are highlighted, described in detail and solutions are offered. In order to understand the potential of SmA LC in the smart glass/window technology, analysis of existing products was performed, a summary of an active smart glass/windows provided, and a comparative study between them was made. In addition, an in-depth study of long-term functional stability was performed during which the most popular types of defects were listed and analysed. Solutions for defect elimination and recommendations for optimization of switching systems and production processes are provided. A methodology for determining the electrical parameters of an LC has been developed in order to create an electrical simulation model and facilitate the development of electronic switching systems.

Abstract:
Digital computers are built from hardware of great simplicity. First, they are built from devices with two states: on or off, one or zero, high voltage or low voltage, or logical TRUE or FALSE. Second, the devices are connected with extremely fine connections, currently on the order of size of a large virus. Their utility, value, and perceived extreme complexity lie in the software controlling them. Different devices have been used to build computers: relays, vacuum tubes, transistors, and integrated circuits. Theoretically, all can run the same software, only slower or faster. More exotic technologies have not proved commercially viable. Digital computer hardware has increased in power by roughly a factor of 2 every 2 years for five decades, an observation called Moore’s Law. Engineering problems with very small devices, such as quantum effects, heat, and difficulty of fabrication, are increasing and may soon end Moore’s Law.

Barthélemy, Jean, and Magali Marx. Solving Rational Expectations Models. Edited by Shu-Heng Chen, Mak Kaboudan, and Ye-Rong Du. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199844371.013.6.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents theoretical foundations of main methods of solving rational expectations models with a special focus on perturbation approaches. First, it gives some insights into the solution methods for linear models. Second, it shows how to use the perturbation approach for solving nonlinear models. It then documents the limits of this approach. The perturbation approach, though the most common solution method in the macroeconomic literature, is inappropriate in contexts of large fluctuations (large shocks or regime switching) and of strong nonlinearities (e.g., occasionally binding constraints). The former case is illustrated by regime switching models. The latter case is illustrated by a study of existing methods for solving rational expectations models under the zero lower bound constraint, that is, the condition of non-negativity of the nominal interest rate. The chapter concludes with a presentation of global methods available when the perturbation approach fails in solving models.

Abstract:
The book “Technologies impacts in exact sciences vol.01”, edited and published by South Florida Publishing, brings together six chapters that address topics of relevance in the context of the exact sciences, and the studies will be available in English and Spanish. The book will feature, a study on the response to harmonics of a spring-mass system: Quasi Resonance, an analysis of the response of such a system to harmonics, and, in particular, one in which Quasiresonance is present. Another study that will be discussed is a review of the problems of the analysis of autotransformer discrete alternating voltage regulators. Most often the discrete regulation of AC voltages is achieved by power electronic converters based on a transformer (autotransformer) and switching by the means of controllable semiconductor switches. The third chapter presents an analysis and comparison of the different projects participating in events of invention, innovation, and creativity, based on their characteristics of quality in use, functionality, and usability, through an external metric plan and quality in use. Research on the relationship between Fermat's Last Theorem (FLT) and optical solitons will also be presented. To find such a relationship, the main steps that led to the demonstration of the FLT were examined, starting from the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture, then looking at the contributions of Hellegouarch, Frey, and Ribet and, finally, Wiles' work 6492. Finally, the fifth chapter presents a study on the measurement of air quality in the Patzcuaro lake basin through the use of a perimeter monitoring network. Thus, we thank all authors for their commitment and dedication to their work and we hope to be able to contribute to the scientific community, in the dissemination of knowledge, and the advancement of science.
