Abstract:
The global financial and economic crisis is widely considered a fundamental crisis of neoliberalism. But the contribution of neoliberals to the ongoing debate on causes and consequences of the crisis has been a substantial, if belittled or even ignored, factor of influence. A review of postcrisis activities of organized neoliberal networks directs attention to their continuing influence in shaping the interpretation of the crisis and preference formation processes with regard to proposed solutions. An agenda of minimal welfare state solutions that are compatible with the market systems has been reconfirmed; it both accepts temporary increases of welfare budgets and aims at constitutionalizing the long-term decrease of welfare budgets through austerity regimes at the same time. Different reservoirs of neoliberal thinking, like the distinct Austrian school and German-Swiss ordoliberal traditions, play an important role in the contemporary controversies on economics and welfare.

Abstract:
Sociolinguistic production has recently turned its attention to the analysis of language and communication in multinational corporations. Scholars have explained that, under current capitalist conditions, language and communication have been resignified by managers, consultants, and marketing specialists as economic assets that contribute to the individualization or customization of products and services. This chapter discusses the techniques, tactics, and forms of expertise through which language and communication are governed and then turned into productive resources within multinational corporations. Drawing on an ethnographic documentation of the management of language and communication within a Swiss multinational, the chapter demonstrates that corporate actors’ policing of language and communication is not merely linguistic policing. Rather, it is a means to discipline and express control over those actors producing language and communication. That is to say, such forms of policing are a method of enhancing multinationals’ productivity and securing their competitiveness under changing market conditions.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on two partial and one full policy reversal on nuclear politics in Switzerland since the 1970s. The occupation of the construction site of a planned nuclear power plant in 1975 marked the first turning point in nuclear energy policy, ending a period of pro-nuclear consensus. This protest event led to a ten-year moratorium on the construction of new nuclear power plants. The second partial reversal came in 2003, when the construction of new plants was planned. The third, full policy reversal came after the Fukushima catastrophe, which led to the decision to phase out Swiss nuclear power plants. The chapter stresses two Swiss specifics: the high importance of direct democracy on the nuclear issue, as the issue opposition can launch initiatives and de facto subject any nuclear energy decision to referendum, and the comparatively minor role of the Greens because of their lack of issue ownership.
