Abstract:
This study analysed the rice genotype with sub1A quantitative trait loci that may interact with ongoing exposure of dehydration. cv. Swarna Sub1 had more nutrients efficiency with increased membrane permeability than cv. Swarna. sub1A QTL with its expression to water / osmotic deficit, however, indirectly to impede the oxidative stress under dehydration might help cv. Swarna Sub1. At maximum dehydration cv. Swarna Sub1 had 1.12 fold excess electrolyte leakages than cv. Swarna under dehydration. cv. Swarna Sub1 had better Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-malic enzyme activity to secure carbon dioxide exchange. A proportional increase in enzyme activity all through dehydration stress maximize under light in cv. Swarna Sub1. At maximum dehydration cv. Swarna Sub1 at saturating substrate concentration was increased by 1.12 fold than other cultivar. The ratio of glutathione (GSH:GSSG) more depleted in cv. Swarna Sub1 through the dehydration period. cv. Swarna could be more promising to retrieve the activity by 1.80 fold than cv. Swarna Sub1 under maximum dehydration. Dehydroascorbate reductase activity was also maintained in cv. Swarna with 1.20 fold ahead than cv. Swarna Sub1 under same condition. As a biomarker of oxidative stress cv. Swarna Sub1 appeared to be less sensitive with the loss of protein oxidation, however, recorded with 25% less carbonyl content than cv. Swarna. Both the genotypes had scored a significant sensitivity with tissue specific distribution for reactive oxygen species as detected by histochemical assay.

Abstract:
SUMMARYThe present study is to characterise the non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) status and its catabolism along with elongation growth in rice cultivars either possessing or not possessing the Sub 1 quantitative trait locus (QTL), i.e. Swarna and Swarna Sub1 exposed to seven days of complete submergence. During submergence, Swarna accelerated the rate of stem and leaf elongation and rapidly consumed NSC. In contrast, Swarna Sub1 consumed energy resources more slowly and maintained similar growth rate to that of non-submerged plants. Swarna Sub1 showed better utilisation of carbohydrate than that of Swarna by progressive induction of alcohol dehydrogenase, starch phosphorylase and total and α-amylase enzyme activity during submergence. Overall, submergence tolerance conferred by the Swarna Sub1 QTL is correlated with better maintenance and utilisation of NSC than that of Swarna.

Abstract:
Saraswatarishta is a herbo-mineral hydro alcoholic formulation prescribed for various memory and sleep related disorders as well as a brain tonic. It is a unique formulation where the presence of swarna during the fermentation process may be responsible to manifold the action of remaining herbal drugs. Though the formulation is prescribed widely and available in the market with different varieties, there is a lack of documentation regarding the standard operating procedure and quality of the product. In the present study, Saraswatarishta and Swarna Saraswatarishta were prepared following standard operating procedure. Both the formulations were subjected to physico-chemical tests and values were found within the normal limits of arishta preparation from Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia of India. The sample of Swarna Saraswatarishta was analysed to check the presence of swarna using the ICP-MS technique. It was found below the level of quantification which interprets the absence of swarna in the formulation. This is the first and foremost report regarding the presence of Swarna in Swarna Saraswatarishta.

Abstract:
Flash flood or submergence is a common phenomenon in rice growing rainfed lowland areas that seriously affects crop establishment leading to severe yield losses. A few submergence–tolerant rice varieties have been developed by introgression SUB -1 gene into mega rice varieties of South Asia. Performance of this variety can be further enhanced through adoption of appropriate management practices. Farners Participatorty trials were conducted using Swarna- sub-1 and CR 1009 sub-1 during kharif, 2017 in three adopted villages at Erasama, Kujanga and Raghunathapur blocks of Jagatsinghpur district. Results of this experiment revealed that at recommended doses of N:P:K @ 80-40-40 Kgha-1, transplanting of 30 days aged seedlings and additional N-dose of 20kg/ha at 7 days after receding of flood water resulted in better post submergence recovery and maximum yield. Maximum number of tillers m-2 was recorded in CR 1009 sub -1 followed by Pooja and Swana Sub -1. Rice variety Swarna Sub –I rerecorded an yield of 55.23 q ha -1 which was 14.5% higher as compared to farmers variety Swrana 48.2 q ha -1. The Swarna Sub-1 and CR 1009 sub-1 survived in the flood and gave higher yield under submergence condition in the coastal flood prone area

Abstract:
AbstractWeedy rice species exhibit differential competitive ability and cause significant losses to rice yield. The present study was conducted to evaluate the competing ability of weedy rice accessions collected from foothills of eastern Himalayas and coastal Odisha grown in the presence of cultivated indica rice var. Swarna. The competitive ability of Swarna and weedy rices were estimated on the basis of (i) Swarna yield reduction under different durations of competition with weedy rice; and (ii) nutrient uptake by Swarna and weedy rice in competitive environment. There was significant yield reduction (18%) when competition was allowed until 6 weeks after emergence (WAE) compared to competition until 2 WAE, which was due to vigorous growth of weedy rice at early vegetative stage. The biomass accumulation and tiller number of weedy rice were significantly higher compared to Swarna. Odisha weedy rice accession recorded about 18, 57 and 24% higher N, P and K uptake, respectively, than Swarna. The highest yield reduction (22%) in Swarna was recorded when grown with OA1 and the lowest impact (7.7%) was recorded with AA2. As conclusion, management practices should be implemented within 2–4 weeks of emergence considering 5–10% acceptable yield loss of Swarna, and grain yield of cultivated rice was reduced significantly by high N and K uptake by weedy rice under a competitive environment.

Abstract:
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is an important food crop worldwide, and potato cyst nematodes (PCNs) are among the most serious pests. The identification of disease resistance genes and molecular markers for PCN infestation can aid in crop improvement research programs against PCN infestation. In the present study, we used high-throughput RNA sequencing to investigate the comprehensive resistance mechanisms induced by PCN infestation in the resistant cultivar Kufri Swarna and the susceptible cultivar Kufri Jyoti. PCN infestation induced 791 differentially expressed genes in resistant cultivar Kufri Swarna, comprising 438 upregulated and 353 downregulated genes. In susceptible cultivar Kufri Jyoti, 2225 differentially expressed genes were induced, comprising 1247 upregulated and 978 downregulated genes. We identified several disease resistance genes (KIN) and transcription factors (WRKY, HMG, and MYB) that were upregulated in resistant Kufri Swarna. The differentially expressed genes from several enriched KEGG pathways, including MAPK signaling, contributed to the disease resistance in Kufri Swarna. Functional network analysis showed that several cell wall biogenesis genes were induced in Kufri Swarna in response to infestation. This is the first study to identify underlying resistance mechanisms against PCN and host interaction in Indian potato varieties.

Abstract:
Sheath blight caused by Rhizoctonia solani is one of the most devastating diseases of rice (Oryza sativa) and causes enormous yield losses over the world after blast, the disease can cause yield loss upto 50 per cent in advanced stage and adversely affects quality of straw. Breeding for resistant varieties is the only viable option to combat the disease efficiently. In this study, our findings showed a significant increase in number of spikelet’s per panicle (3.45 %), test weight (0.62 %) and grain yield (0.72 %) compared to recurrent parent Swarna sub-1. The range of mean performance of 18 BC2F1 selected improved lines varied for per cent disease severity from 26.75 to 43.58 at 16 days after inoculation. Among the 18 improved lines, only four lines (Swarna sub-1-6, Swarna sub-1-32, Swarna sub-1-13 and Swarna sub-1-29) showed resistance score of 1-3. The remaining fourteen lines showed moderate resistance with a score of 3-5. Hence, the resistance line could be exploited in sheath blight resistance breeding programme and the same line can also be released as a variety against sheath blight of rice after testing over multilocation trails.

Abstract:
Nitrogen is the most limiting nutrient for rice. Modern high yielding rice varieties may have differences in accumulating and using N from soil and applied fertilizer. A field experiment with 8 rice genotypes was conducted during 2008 wet season (T.Aman season) to study the effect of different rates of N fertilization on the yield performance and nitrogen nutrition under irrigated condition. Among the tested varieties/lines, BR7155-20-1-3 produced the significantly highest grain yield of 5.04 t/ha at N30 level followed by Swarna (4.66 t/ha) at the same level of N with similar growth duration (140 days). Agronomic efficiency of added N ranged from 0.7 to 23.3 for the promising line BR7155-20-1-3 and 3.3 to 27.0 for variety Swarna. Grain yield at No was the highest in BR7155-20-1-3 followed by the variety Swarna and the lowest in BR7870-5 *(Nils)- I 0-HR8. Percent nitrogen recovery ranged from 50 to 63 for variety Swarna and 13 to 30 for promising line BR7155-20-1-3. The promising line BR7155– 20-1-3 and the variety Swarna may be economically advantageous over the other varieties/ lines. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjar.v37i2.11222 Bangladesh J. Agril. Abstract:
Maize is one such crop, the production of which is highly challenged due to water shortage and soil water losses. The present study was undertaken on artificially induced water stress of maize in vitro, where stress was applied with PEG-6000 on one week old seedlings of four varieties BN 10, Dhanya. Kaveri-Super 244, and Swarna for 3, 5 and 7 days. The activity of antioxidative enzyme like peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase was assayed in the stressed and control plants. Peroxidase activity decreased on the 7th day in Dhanya and Swarna but in BN 101 and Super 244 the activity decreased slightly on the 5th day and increased again on the 7th day. Ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase showed a similar trend where the activity decreased after a certain period of stress. Similar trend was seen for GR activity too in case of Dhanya and Swarna. But in BN 101 and Super 244 there was an increase in the activity with the increase in the period of stress. Catalase activity declined during stress in Dhanya and Swarna while the other two varieties showed an increase during stress. Other than enzymatic activities, various biochemical analyses like proline, ascorbate, chlorophyll was also carried out. With the increase in intensity of drought there was an increase in both proline and ascorbate content in all. A significant increase in the ascorbate content was observed in BN 101 and super 244, H202, accumulation and lipid peroxidation showed an increase during stress in Dhanya and Swarna but no increase was seen in the other two varieties. Chlorophyll content showed a decline during the period of drought when compared to the control plants of all varieties. Enzymatic activity and biochemical tests show that Dhanya and Swarna are susceptible to drought stress than super 244 and BN 101 which are the tolerant varieties.

Lalat, Swarna, Swarna-Sub1 and Naveenwere assessed to reveal possibility of intergroup inhibition in the field. Dynamics of the phyllophytic microbes revealed that the phyllospheric bacterial population (3.59 to 4.10 log CFU/cm2) was more than those of the phylloplane (1.56 to 1.75 log CFU/cm2) of different plants. The phyllophytes of the four rice genotypes decreased in the order of Swarna-Sub1 > Swarna > Lalat > Naveen. The fungal pathogens of LF viz. C. brongniartii (TF6 and TF6-1A), B.bassiana (TF6-1B) and M. anisopliae (TF19, TF19- 3A and TF19-3B) were not inhibited by any of the phyllophytic organisms which proved that they can be applied on the canopy of the rice plants to control the pests.ECOPRINT 22: 75-84, 2015

Consequentially in post-COVID period many of our children are likely not to grow up to their inherent genetic potential and thus manifest as laggards in their respective fields. This crucial childhood specific health issue arising out of COVID 19 conditions can however be effectively managed by a simple and time tested Ayurvedic therapeutic measure of ‘Swarna Prashana’. Its principal ingredient is gold. In pre COVID 19 times, the major trend of administering Swarna Prashana in our country was of giving it monthly as a pulse therapy (on Pushya Nakshatra). But in view of the present 24X7 threat of n-CoV 2019, the most reasonable approach of would be of daily ad-ministration in the initial few months, thereafter, followed by a strategic shift to pulse therapy. 0.25 mg/kg/day appear to be a rational daily dose of Swarna (bhasma) for Swarna Prashana in children. Thus, considering its potential of ensuring a maximum possible overall growth and development of a child and in turn the nation too, Swarna Prashana should be urgently launched as a national program in the present time of crisis.

Abstract:
The high selection pressure applied to rice breeding since it was domesticated thousands of years ago has initiated a narrowing its genetic variability. Obtaining new rice varieties therefore becomes a major challenge for breeders and the development of techniques to increase genetic variability has attracted the attention of various research groups. Understanding mutations and their application has paved the way for the interpretation of immersion tolerant rice. Creating variability through mutations has therefore become the most important tool for rice improvement. Gamma-rays were able to create genetic variables for abiotic stress tolerance, such as submergence tolerance as well as plant height, number of tillers, shoot and root weight, total biomass, and panicle length. Among the three parents of BRRI dhan52, Guti swarna and Mamun swarna, the highest average yield plant-1 (46.56 g) was produced by Mamun swarna (cont.) and the lowest (18.16 g) by BRRI dhan52. On the other hand, the group of all mutants, Mamun swarna-250 (M3) was more productive (39.30 g) and the maturation was 142.66 days from Guti swarna-300 (M3) (20.20 g) and maturity duration was 151.66 days. The first three principal components studied, including the Eigen value, explained 80.4% of the total variation in 11 rice genotypes for 9 quantitative traits. The gene diversity value of allele across 11 genotypes was 0.469. The value of polymorphism information content (PIC) was 0.359 (SC34 / RM23679) and the allele frequency (%) was 62. However, this assessment may be effective in developing reliable mutants for significant submergence stresses in rice.

Abstract: Cancer is most dreadful disease affecting mankind. Many innovative healing modalities and hundreds of cancer treatments have resulted from extensive research. With chemotherapy and radiotherapy, surgical excision is the oldest and most tested method. This leads to therapy problems, poor health, and a decline in quality of life, all of which necessitate treatment discontinuation. Anorexia, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and mucositis can all be caused by psychological causes. The anorexiacachexia syndrome is the most common cause of death among cancer patients. Cancer cachexia is characterised by metabolic, hormonal, and cytokine abnormalities that lead to progressive wasting. Swarna Vanga is a Kupipakwa Rasayana mentioned in Rasatarangini. Chemically it is stannous sulphide containing Shuddha Parad, Shuddha Vanga, Shuddha Gandhak, Shuddha Navasadar. Till today, no study has been carried out using Swarna Vanga for its Rasayana and Balya properties. Hence an attempt was given to study the pharmaceutical preparation, standardization and clinical efficacy of the drug in reducing adverse effects of chemotherapy with special reference to its Rasayana property through this dissertation. Thus the present study entitled “Pharmaceutical preparation and standardization of Swarna Vanga and its clinical efficacy as adjuvant to reduce adverse effects of chemotherapy with special reference to its Rasayana property” was carried out. Abstract:
Farmers’ existing rice production practices provide key indications of interventions for improving yield in their environments. This study aimed to explore those indications in the Fallow - T. Aman rice - Fallow cropping pattern (CP) under rainfed farming practiced by the farmers in Kapasia, Gazipur. Research method employed one-to-one and face-to face interview of 154 farmers practicing the CP. The average yield of T. Aman was estimated as 3.23 t ha-1, slightly below the national average yield of 3.93 t ha-1, in the range of 1.18 to 5.65 t ha-1. Variety was one of the two broad factors that determined the yield variation. The high yeld potential (HYP) category absolutely preferred the production aim, where Swarna-Ranjit (31.2% by farmer) and BRRI dhan49 (24.7% by farmer) were the dominated varieties where average yields were very close (3.51 and 3.36 t ha-1) for Swarna-Ranjit and BRRI dhan49, respectively). Management was the second factor determining the yield variation within varieties. While both the varieties received similar maximum yield (5.65 t ha-1), Swarna-Ranjit produced the minimum yield of 1.40 t ha-1 and BRRI dhan49 of 1.98 t ha-1. This study did not find a consistent pattern of response of the three measured management components - transplanting time, seedling age and seedling density to yield in either variety. The yield variance of BRRI dhan49 under three management components was higher compared to Swarna-Ranjit. Farmers practiced relatively a wide range of three management combinations to achieve high yield in Swarna-Ranjit, but a narrow range of the three management combinations for BRRI dhan49 to achieve the same level of yield. It is concluded that the variety-specific agronomic management to be the avenue for yield improvements in farmers’ fields. Bangladesh Agron. J. 2022, 25(1): 23-36

Abstract:
A type of electuary that falls under the heading of pediatrics is described in the classics of Ayurveda as Swarna Prashana (oral administration of gold as electuary). In the Kashyapa Samhita, it is intended to aid infants' memory, intuition, and invulnerability. It is depicted in terms of Jatakarma Samskara, or new-born consideration. One of the 16 basic Samskaras that Ayurveda describes. As an illustration of how Swarna Prashana satisfies the main tenets of Ayurveda, see preventative measures. Vyadhikshamtva (immunity) is our body's propensity to detect the microscopic organisms that propagate disease and are responsive or losing their potency. The main topic of discussion in the medical industry has historically been how to prevent disease by boosting immunity, and these days, swarna prashana serves as an oral resistance booster (oral antibody). The current conceptual study demonstrates how Swarnaprashana improves immunity while also increasing cognitive and illness prevention. Swarnaprashana has numerous effects and can be given to children for better overall growth and development.

Abstract:
Submergence of lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) fields during the wet season in coastal regions adversely affects survival and productivity of rice. A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive wet seasons in 2016 and 2017 at ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Regional Research Station, Canning Town, West Bengal to evaluate the performance of six varieties carrying the SUB1 gene (BR11-Sub1, Ciherang-Sub1, CR1009-Sub1, IR64- Sub1, Samba-Sub1, and Swarna-Sub1) along with two checks (DRR Dhan39 and Sabita) under stagnant and flash flooding situations. Sabita produced the highest grain yield (3.45 t/ha) followed by CR1009-Sub1 (3.27 t/ha) under stagnant flooding. Sabita is the local check under stagnant flooding. Under flash flooding, CR1009-Sub1 produced the highest grain yield of 4.11 t/ha, followed by Swarna-Sub1 (3.11 t/ha) and BR11-Sub1 (2.78 t/ha). Participatory varietal selection (PVS) was conducted during both the years to assess the preferences of farming communities for these varieties. Under stagnant flooding, the highest preference score was recorded for Sabita (0.62) followed by BR11-Sub1 (0.32) and CR1009-Sub1 (0.31). The lowest preference score was observed for IR64-Sub1 (-0.56), Samba-Sub1(-0.31), and Ciherang-Sub1 (-0.26). Under flash flooding, the highest preference score was recorded for CR1009-Sub1 (0.63) followed by BR11-Sub1 (0.38) and Swarna-Sub1 (0.20). The lowest preference score was observed for IR64-Sub1 (-0.62), Samba-Sub1 (-0.34), Ciherang-Sub1 (-0.29), and DRR Dhan39 (-0.27). Based on the results of field experiments and farmers’ preferences, CR1009-Sub1, BR11-Sub1, and Swarna-Sub1 could be recommended for cultivation in areas affected by flash floods in coastal areas of India.

Field experiment was conducted at Rice Research Station, Bankura during kharif season 2009 and 2010 to study the yield potentiality and spatial requirement of rice varieties in system of rice intensification (SRI) under red and laterite zone of West Bengal. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) in a three replications with two rice varieties (Swarna and Lalat). Performances of swarna and lalat varieties in SRI as compared to conventional method of rice cultivation (CMRC) were investigated. Swarna (MTU 7029) has yielded maximum grain yield (6.07, 5.66 and 5.86 t ha-1 during 2009, 2010 and in pooled, respectively) from the treatment T7 (25 × 25 cm spacing) under SRI. Lowest grain yield (3.55, 3.23 and 3.38 t ha-1 during 2009, 2010 and in pooled, respectively) was recorded from treatment T9 (Lalat at 20 × 15 cm spacing) under CMRC. SRI technology has potential in increasing more grain yield, it saves seed requirement and irrigation water and chemical fertilizer considering than conventional method of cultivation. Rice cultivation is more sustainable and profitable for the farmers in SRI under the red and laterite zone of West Bengal.

Abstract:
High yielding rain-fed lowland rice cultivars are sensitive to complete submergence stress of more than four days. In Nigeria, rice farms on about 3.6 million ha of rain-fed lowland areas are adversely affected by submergence stress. Consequently, farmers in the major rice producing states of the country lose their entire crop to flooding each year. The identification of a major quantitative traits locus (QTL) on chromosome 9, designated as sub1, has provided the opportunity to apply marker assisted selection to develop submergence tolerant varieties. This study was undertaken to introgress sub 1 into the genetic background of Nigerian lowland rice mega variety (WITA 4) and assess the ability of WITA 4 with sub 1 to withstand submergence stress. Swarna Sub1, one of the FR13A-derived submergence tolerant varieties developed by IRRI, was crossed to WITA 4, a submergence intolerant Nigerian mega variety to produce F1 hybrid. The derived BC1F2 progenies were genotyped and BC1F3 phenotyped. The results of genotyping, using two markers, namely ART5 and SC3, revealed that 18 BC1F3 plants were found carrying Swarna Sub 1 allele of ART5 while 41 BC1F3 carried WITA 4 allele of ART5. Twenty progenies were found carrying Swarna Sub 1 allele of SC3 while 37 plants carried WITA 4 allele. Two plants carried both alleles (H). Seventeen plants were observed to carry Swarna Sub 1 alleles at both markers loci while a total of 36 progenies were observed to carry WITA 4 alleles at both markers loci. The results of the phenotypic screening showed that 12 plants recorded percentage survival above 60%. The two markers showed high selection accuracies, and selection based on the markers could satisfactorily meet the needs of breeding for submergence.

Abstract:
Hydroponic culture containing 200 mM NaCl was used to induce oxidative stress in seedlings of cultivars initially primed with 1 mM SNP and 10 µM ABA. Exogenous application of sodium nitroprusside (SNP – a nitric oxide donor) and abscisic acid (ABA) was well sensitized more in cv. Swarna Sub1 than cv. Swarna and also reflected in different cellular responses. The major effects of salinity, irrespective of the cultivar, were lowering the water relation, including relative water content and osmotic potential, and decreasing the compatible solutes like alanine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and glycine betaine. The accumulated polyamines were reduced more in cv. Swarna with a concomitant decrease in photosynthetic reserves. NADP-malic enzyme activity, sucrose accumulation, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase activities gradually declined under NaCl stress and the catabolizing enzymes like invertase (both wall and cytosolic forms) also declined. On the contrary, plants suffered from oxidative stress through superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and their biosynthetic enzymes like NADP(H) oxidase. Moderation of Na+/K+ by both SNP and ABA were correlated with other salt sensitivities in the plants. The maximum effects of SNP and ABA were found in the recovery of antioxidation pathways, osmotic tolerance, and carbohydrate metabolism. Findings predict the efficacy of SNP and ABA either independently or cumulatively in overcoming NaCl toxicity in rice.

Abstract:
An experiment was conducted in the farmer’s field at the Moddho Jutkhali village, Subornochar, Noakhali, a salinity affected area of Bangladesh to investigate the effect of variety and gypsum fertilizer on the yield of transplant aman rice under salinity condition during July to December, 2017. The experiment was laid out in a two factor split-plot design with three replications consisting of three aman rice varieties viz., Swarna (V1, an indian variety adapted to that locality), BRRI dhan52 (V2) and Binadhan-7 (V3) and three levels of gypsum fertilizer viz., 0, 75 and 150 kg gypsum ha-1. Yield components and yield of transplant aman rice were significantly influenced by variety, level of gypsum and their interactions. Among the varieties, Swarna produced the tallest plant height (126.7 cm), highest number of grains panicle-1 (76.30), weight of 1000 grains (25.80 g), grain yield (5.44 t ha-1), straw yield (7.07 t ha-1), and biological yield (12.51 t ha-1) while Binadhan-7 showed lowest values of these respective parameters but number of total tillers hill-1 (9.99) and number of effective tillers hill-1 (8.94) were maximum in Binadhan-7. Among three gypsum levels, most of the yield contributing characters showed highest values for 150 kg gypsum ha-1 that’s why grain yield was also highest (5.32 t ha-1) for this treatment. On the other hand lowest grain yield (4.92 t ha-1) was found when no gypsum was applied. In case of treatment interaction, highest number of grains panicle-1 (80.23) and highest grain yield (5.69 t ha-1) were produced when Swarna was cultivated with 75 kg gypsum ha-1 while lowest values of grain, straw and biological yields (4.36, 5.11 and 9.47 t ha-1, respectively) were found when Binadhan-7 was cultivated without applying any gypsum. Therefore, it can be concluded that the variety Swarna with 75 kg gypsum ha-1 can be practiced for the cultivation of transplant aman rice in the salinity affected area of Noakhali, Bangladesh to obtain the highest grain yield. Abstract:
Swarna (MTU7029), an Indian mega-variety of rice, is cultivated on an estimated 8Mha of land. There is a pressing need to address yield stagnation and wider adaptability to irrigated lowland and rainfed ecologies as a result of the negative consequences of climate change and population growth. The present study was aimed at improving Swarna for two yield-related traits through marker-assisted backcross breeding strategy by introgression of OsSPL14 (panicle branching) and SCM2 (stronger culm). Foreground and background selection was carried out at each generation. Homozygous BC2F2 plants harbouring both yield-enhancing genes were identified and advanced through pedigree selection till BC2F5 and evaluated in station trials. Three promising lines possessing higher yield over recurrent parent were identified, and a single line, IET 27661 exhibited superior yield in multi-location trials of the All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Programme (AICRIP) and was found to be promising.

Abstract:
Storage behavior of different potato cultivars viz., Kufri Swarna, Kufri Girdhari, Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Neelima and Kufri Himalini was assessed for post harvest loss under ambient storage conditions of Nilgiri region. The study was carried out in three different seasons (Spring, Summer and Autumn) during 2013-2015. All the cultivars showed dormancy period of more than six weeks in all the three seasons. Cultivars varied widely in their weight loss, sprouting behavior and cooking quality. Among the varieties Kufri Girdhari found to possess good storage qualities while Kufri Swarna showed poor keeping quality in all the three seasons. All the cultivars recorded less total weight loss during autumn season. The study indicated that importance should be given to the storage behavior of the cultivars along with yield in order to have better keeping quality for regular supply of tubers for table as well as seed purpose.

Abstract:
Achieving the demand and supply of rice for the increasing global population will be a challenging task beyond 2040. Therefore, the yield potential of popular rice varieties needs to be increased. The production from lowland rice can be enhanced by managing the major biotic and abiotic stresses faced in the ecology. In this work, we have developed the pipelines for gene stacking of submergence tolerance, bacterial blight resistance and yield component QTLs in the popular rice variety ‘Swarna’ by marker-assisted backcross breeding approach. Genotyping results of 796 BC1F1 backcross derived lines showed the presence of GW2, OsSPL14, SCM2 yield component QTLs, Sub1A for submergence tolerance and bacterial blight resistance genes xa5 and Xa21 in the progenies. The four stacked QTLs and two resistance genes were observed in six backcrosses derived progenies only. These progenies will be used in the next generation for further selection and evaluation for enhancing submergence tolerance, yield potential and bacterial blight resistance in Swarna rice variety background.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of climate change on productivity of rice cultivars Swarna sub-1, Sarjoo-52, Pant Dhan 4, and NDR-359 for the years 2030, 2050, 2070, and 2090 for the Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh using the Marksim and DSSAT crop simulation model under four different climate change scenarios, namely RCPs 2.6, 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5. The model evaluation indicated good performance with both calibration (PE=2.43,6.26,4.31,3.79, RMSE= 132.79, 345.13, 237.44, 237.85, nRMSE = 2.53, 7.31, 4.46, 3.97) and validation (PE =3.58, 10.03, 4.28, 6.09, RMSE = 197.88, 456.35, 238.37, 366.52, nRMSE = 3.95, 10.55, 4.67, 6.39) for Swarna sub-1, Sarjoo-52, Pant Dhan 4 and NDR-359 cultivars respectively, which showed good agreement between anticipated and observed values. For the Prayagraj region, NDR-359 yields the most among the four varieties, followed by Pant Dhan 4, Swarna Sub-1, and Sarjoo-52. By examining the future climate data that MarkSim's weather generator downloaded, it was noticed that all other weather variables, such as solar radiation, average maximum and minimum temperature increases while rainfall decreases. The findings of the study reveal that, among all projection scenarios, the grain yield is greater for RCP 2.6 and lowest for RCP 8.5. Analysis of the expected climate scenario data with yield revealed that the yield was higher in 2030 and lower in 2050. Additionally, it was observed that again in 2090 the yield gets increased for RCP 2.6 & decreased for RCP 4.5,6.0 & 8.5. Among all the four cultivars the yield of Sarjoo-52 will be reduced for RCP 4.5,6.0 & 8.5 for the year of 2050,2070 & 2090.These findings may offer insightful information about possible climate change effects on rice yield and suitable adaptive strategies to minimize the negative effects of future climate change.

Abstract:
To assess the combining ability for quantitative and qualitative traits in cucumber a full diallel set of 7 parents and their 42 F1’s was evaluated at Horticultural Research Centre, Department of Horticulture, H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal), Uttarakhand, India during 2015 and 2016. The mean sum of squares due to general combining ability (GCA) was of significant differences at 1 % level for almost all the characters. The variance due to specific combining ability (SCA) was found highly significant at 1 % level for almost all the characters. Results from general combining ability studies revealed that the parent, New Manipur-1 showed significant GCA effect in desired direction for maximum characters viz., length of vine, days to first fruit harvest and number of fruits per vine. The cross combinations, Seven Star x New Manipur-1 for length of vine, Swarna Purna x Seven Star for days to first fruit harvest; K-90 x Seven Star for number of fruits per vine and the cross PB-Naveen x Swarna Purna for total fruit yield per vine showed significant SCA effect in desired direction and found to be superior specific cross combinations. Abstract:
In this work, the phytoaccumulation efficiency and enzymatic activities of various rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes exposed to differential concentrations of Cr (VI) have been studied. The cultivars experimented were Pratikshya, Sankar, Annapurna, White swarna and Pimpudibasa. The seedlings were raised with ¼ strength Hoagland’s nutrient solution prepared in deionised water supplemented with different concentrations (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400µg/L) of hexavalent Cr as potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) under controlled environmental conditions. The seedlings were harvested at 7 days intervals and parameters like root and shoot elongation, enzymatic activities and tolerance to chromium ions were measured after different periods of exposure. The highest concentration of Cr (VI) ions in shoots (9.92 µg/g dry weight) and roots (8.51µg/g dry weight) was found in Pratikshya exposed to 300 µg/L of Cr(VI) after 21 days of treatments. The growth parameters of five cultivars and tolerance to chromium were in the order of Pratikshya>Sankar>Annapurna>White swarna>Pimpudibasa. Cr(VI) toxicity was correlated with peroxidase and catalase enzyme activities of different rice cultivars. The interaction between chromium ions and rice cultivars biomass was studied using SEM-EDX and FTIR analysis.
