Abstract:
Stratigraphic cross-sections, or horizontally extended representations of strata in profile, were introduced into scientific literature in the year 1719 by John Strachey, of Sutton Court, near Stowey Somersetshire, England. Before that time, English-language stratigraphical geology had been practised chiefly by drillers searching for coal, whose published records of vertical sequences of strata and of lateral correlations among subsurface borehole sections, go back to 1639. Strachey's sections were new in several ways: they were drawings rather than lists of strata, they represented true dips, and most importantly they demonstrated stratigraphic correlation in the subsurface and across landscape gaps, where for structural or topographic reasons the intervening strata were obscured or missing. To achieve such delineations in the form of drawings or “draughts”, Strachey assumed as selfevident that the strata were regular in their order of superposition and that they had lateral continuity through concealed areas. His published observations and measurements were widely copied, and William Smith, generally regarded as one of the fathers of geology, seems to have found significant inspiration among Strachey's writings.

In animal housing ammonia is an aerial pollutant resulting from the microbial conversion of nitrogenous materials excreted in faeces and urine. Ammonia is an irritant to cells lining the respiratory tract and an increased incidence of pneumonia in pigs and humans and atrophic rhinitis in pigs have been correlated with elevated ammonia levels. In a survey of 12 farms and 49 pig buildings concentration of ammonia was identified specifically as a causative agent in the aetiology of atrophic rhinitis (Robertson, Wilson and Smith 1990). Furthermore, high levels of ammonia can delay the onset of puberty in gilts perhaps as a result of the masking of boar odour (Malayer, Brandt, Green, Kelly, Sutton and Diekman 1988).Regulations have been introduced (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)) limiting the exposure of humans to atmospheric ammonia to a mean level of 25 ppm over an 8h work shift and 35 ppm for 10 minute exposure. As part of a study on the effectiveness of a feed additive formulated to control atmospheric ammonia, levels of ammonia in pig housing were monitored.

Employees‘ perceptions of the emotional requirements of their work role are considered a necessary antecedent of emotion work. The impact of these requirements on the emotions employees display, their well-being, and their clients' satisfaction has been explored in previous research. Emotional requirements have been characterized as organizationally-based expectations (e.g., Brotheridge & Lee, 2003), formal and informal organizational rules (e.g., Cropanzano, Weiss & Elias, 2004), occupational norms (e.g., Rafaeli & Sutton, 1987; Smith & Kleinman, 1989) and job-based demands (Brotheridge & Lee, 2002). Although all these definitions assume some kind of shared source for perceptions of emotional requirements, it remains unclear to what extent these different sources contribute and to what extent the requirements are shared by different units, teams and individuals in the organization. The present study analyses the perception of emotional requirements from a survey of ninety-seven Primary Health Care teams composed of general practitioners, nurses and administrative staff (N = 1057). The relative contribution of different sources of variance (team, organizational, and occupational) to perceived emotional requirements and the effects on employees’ job satisfaction and well being are examined. Results confirm the relevance of the source and show the contribution of emotional demands to prediction of emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction levels.

A comparative analysis of the philosophical foundations of the teachings on love by Maximus the Confessor and Vladimir Solovyov is presented utilizing the principles of source analysis, comparative philosophical study, and the historico-genetic method. The case is made for the relevance of this research topic, due to the lack of special studies on the reception of Maximus the Confessor’s doctrine of the love in the works of Vladimir Solovyov. An analysis is given of the extent to which V.V. Vysheslavtseva, K.V. Mochulsky, G.V. Florovsky, A.F. Loseva, S.S. Averintseva, V.M. Lurie, I.B. Benevich, A.I. Sidorova knew of the the problem. The focus is also on the works of foreign authors – H.U. von Balthazar, M.-J. Guillau, D.D. Kornblatt, R.F. Gustafson, E.V. Borisova, J.-K. Larcher, Ts. Angelova, J. Sutton, J. Krasicki, O. Smith – which show a genetic affinity between the teachings of Maximus the Confessor and Vladimir Solovyov. This article also takes up the main sources that reveal the content of the concepts of love in Maximus the Confessor and Vladimir Solovyov. Also taken up here is the extent of the Russian philosopher’s acquaintance with the works and heritage of St. Maximus and Solovyov’s assessment of his place and role in the patristic heritage. We find the focus of attention of modern scholars to be on the epistemological and ethical aspects of love as found in the works of the Byzantine thinker. This article also notes the particular importance of studying the ontological foundations of the concepts of love that are found in Maximus the Confessor and Vladimir Solovyov.

Nat Genetics 2008;40(6):776–781. Epilepsy and mental retardation limited to females (EFMR) is a disorder with an X-linked mode of inheritance and an unusual expression pattern. Disorders arising from mutations on the X chromosome are typically characterized by affected males and unaffected carrier females. In contrast, EFMR spares transmitting males and affects only carrier females. Aided by systematic resequencing of 737 X chromosome genes, we identified different protocadherin 19 ( PCDH19) gene mutations in seven families with EFMR. Five mutations resulted in the introduction of a premature termination codon. Study of two of these demonstrated nonsense-mediated decay of PCDH19 mRNA. The two missense mutations were predicted to affect adhesiveness of PCDH19 through impaired calcium binding. PCDH19 is expressed in developing brains of human and mouse and is the first member of the cadherin superfamily to be directly implicated in epilepsy or mental retardation.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous issues in mental health benefit from technological innovation. An example involves the mental health challenges of long-duration spaceflight (such as a Mars mission), including prolonged confinement, microgravity, and different sunlight exposure lengths. Persisting on Earth are global mental health challenges stemming from disease burdens, limited interview-based diagnostic systems, trial-and-error treatment approaches, and suboptimal access. There is potential for cross-pollinating solutions between these seemingly disparate challenges using a range of emerging technologies such as sensors, omics, and big data. In this review, we highlight the bidirectional value of mental health technology transfer aimed to address issues both on Earth and in space.METHODS: We prepared a systematic review of studies pertaining to mental health technological innovation and space medicine.RESULTS: For Earth mental health technologies translatable to long-duration space missions, we cite several example technologies, including device-based psychotherapy and social support, conversational agents aka chatbots, and nutritional and physical activity focused mental health. Space technologies translatable to Earth mental health include remote sensing devices, global navigation satellite systems, satellite communications, chronotherapies, and nutritional advances.DISCUSSION: There is a rich history of space technologies informing Earth technological trends, including general health care on Earth, and vice versa. Abstract:
Cedrus deodara is a highly valued conifer widely grown as an ornamental in the Pacific Northwest and southern United States. C. deodara in the Pacific Northwest is normally problem free but occasionally is damaged by dieback of shoot tips, which has been associated with a fungus resembling Sirococcus conigenus. In February 2002, bleeding cankers were observed on 2- to 4-year-old stems of potted nursery stock of C. deodara cv. Karl Fuchs from Clackamas County, OR. Cankers were dark with indistinct margins, shallow, and up to 30 cm long. Infection appeared to have originated with small twigs that had died. Cultures isolated from discolored bark on streptomycin-amended potato dextrose agar (PDA) produced conidiomata with hyaline, fusiform, two-celled conidia typical of S. conigenus (1,3). Inter-simple sequence repeat-polymerase chain reaction fingerprints of an isolate from one of these trees were consistent with the P group of S. conigenus (mostly from hosts in Picea and Pinus spp.) (2). This isolate (02–04, ATCC MYA-2969) was used to inoculate two shoots on each of 12 3-year-old potted deodar cedars in each of two trials. Removing a needle wounded each shoot, and an agar plug colonized with mycelium was placed over the wound and held in place for 2 weeks with Parafilm. Sterile agar plugs were applied to two wounded control shoots on each tree in each trial. After 10 weeks, 25 of 48 inoculated shoots were blighted and drooped with yellow to brown needles that eventually dropped. The pathogen was reisolated from 24 of 25 symptomatic shoots but not from asymptomatic or control shoots. Abstract:
Phoma black leg or stem canker, caused by Leptosphaeria maculans or L. biglobosa, is an important disease of brassicas, causing significant crop losses in areas such as Europe, Australia, and North America (1). Samples collected in 2011 from canola and forage brassica (swede, kale, and turnip) crops in the main New Zealand growing regions (Southland, Central Otago, Canterbury, Hawkes Bay, and Manawatu) to identify the causal agent(s) of the characteristic stem cankers, found many isolates of L. maculans, which has been reported previously in New Zealand (2), and three isolates identified by colony characteristics as L. biglobosa. Of the latter, two isolates were from canola (Brassica napus) stem cankers from Darfield and Lincoln, Canterbury, and one was from a kale (B. oleracea) stem canker from Lincoln. An isolate (ICMP10665) of similar morphology, from the International Collection of Microorganisms from Plants (ICMP), obtained from a basal rot lesion on a cauliflower (B. oleracea var. botrytis) plant in Levin, New Zealand in 1979, was also evaluated. The initial, incorrect identification of the latter isolate as L. maculans predates the reclassification of L. maculans group B isolates as a new species, L. biglobosa (1). These four isolates produced fluffy white mycelium and a yellow pigment on potato dextrose agar (PDA) after 5 days' growth, and abundant black-brown, globose pycnidia containing cylindrical hyaline conidia after 7 days. In contrast, L. maculans isolates had slower growth and no pigment production (4). Amplification of genomic DNA using species-specific primers LmacR, LmacF, and LbigF (1) generated a PCR product of 444 bp that is typical of L. biglobosa isolates. Sequencing of the PCR product from each of the four isolates showed they were 100% identical to a sequence of L. biglobosa ‘brassicae’ in GenBank (JF740198). To confirm the species identity of the isolates, the rDNA, actin, and β-tubulin gene regions were amplified (1,3). Sequences for the rDNA (568 bp), actin (941 bp), and β-tubulin (410 bp) gene regions were 99% identical to sequences of the same regions of isolates in GenBank for L. biglobosa ‘brassicae’ (AY48997, AY748949.1, and AY748997.1, respectively). The four L. biglobosa isolates were tested for pathogenicity on a canola cultivar commonly grown in New Zealand (Flash). Cotyledons of 10-day-old seedlings (n = 12 seedlings/isolate or control treatment) grown in a potting mix in pots were pricked with a sewing needle, and each wound inoculated with 10 μl of the appropriate conidial suspension (106 conidia/ml) or 10 μl sterilized distilled water for the control treatment. Leaf lesions that developed on the inoculated cotyledons were characteristic of those caused by L. biglobosa, i.e., small and dark with a distinct margin. No pycnidia were produced on the lesions. No lesions developed on the cotyledons of the non-inoculated control plants. The causal agents were confirmed as L. biglobosa by the colony morphology of isolates that grew from surface-sterilized, inoculated leaf lesions plated on PDA amended with 100 μg/ml ampicillin. The fungus was not isolated from control leaf tissue. To our knowledge, this is the first report of L. biglobosa as a pathogen of canola and kale in New Zealand. Abstract:
Italy could be considered the main apple-producing country in the European Union. Italian apple (Malus domestica L. Borkh.) production is estimated at approximately 2.1 million tons and encompasses a wide range of cultivars, harvested from August to November. Colletotrichum acutatum, which causes severe losses to strawberry production, was a regulated organism for all European countries until 2008, when it was removed from the EPPO quarantine pathogen list because of its wide distribution in strawberry-production areas. During the growing season of 2010, fungi were isolated from apple fruits exhibiting bitter rot symptoms after 4 months of storage in several packinghouses in the Emilia Romagna Region. The apples belonged to the Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Pink Lady and Crisp Pink cultivars. Lesions on the fruit surface were circular and 1 to 3 cm in diameter. When lesions enlarged, they became sunken with relatively firm rotten tissues. The fungal fruiting structures, acervuli, were distributed sparsely or densely on old lesions, and under humid conditions, they discharged an orange conidial mass. Conidia observed with a light microscope appeared hyaline and fusiform, 8 to 16 × 2.5 to 4 μm, with two pointed ends or one rounded end. The fungal isolates were grown on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates incubated at 25°C. After 7 days, colonies were white, becoming gray to pale orange, and when viewed from the reverse side, the color ranged from pink to reddish orange. Both cultural and morphological characteristics of the pathogen were similar to those described for C. acutatum J.H. Simmonds (3), which is responsible for bitter rot of apple (2). Koch's postulates were performed with one representative isolate from each host by artificial inoculation of 30 healthy apples from the cultivars listed above. Fruit surfaces were disinfected with 70% ethanol, wounded with a sterile needle, and then inoculated with 20 μl of a spore suspension (105 conidia ml–1) prepared from a 15-day-old culture on PDA. Inoculated fruits were sealed in a plastic bag and incubated at 25°C for 10 days. In 92% of fruits, symptoms appeared 10 days later, forming lesions with cream-to-salmon pink fruiting structures. The fungus was reisolated onto PDA from the lesions on the inoculated apples. After 7 days of incubation, the colonies and the morphology of conidia were the same as those of the original isolates. The tests were performed on all four cultivars with similar results. The PCR analysis, carried out using universal primers ITS1 and ITS4 (4) directly from single-spore-derived mycelium (1), resulted in an amplification product with 100% sequence homology with C. acutatum isolate AB626881 from GenBank database. Considering the results obtained, to our knowledge, this is the first report of C. acutatum in Italy causing bitter rot on apple. The disease is common in practically all countries where apples are commercially grown and since the losses could be severe under prolonged warm and wet weather conditions, C. acutatum could represent a serious issue for the Italian apple industry. Abstract:
The world has already experienced several viral attacks in the 21st Century (Christou, 2011) have affected millions of people globally and caused substantial mortality and morbidity (Sutton, 2018). One that caused global pandemic and fear is newly emerged novel coronavirus (COVID-19) (Wilder-Smith et al., 2020). It is highly contagious, large enveloped, single-stranded, non-segmented, positive-sense RNA viruse that belong to coronaviridae family and genus Beta coronavirus (Yan et al., 2020). The viruses of coronaviridae family are further divided into two subfamilies; Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) (Kindler et al., 2016). COVID-19 show close similarities to SARS-CoV due to phylogenetic relationship and genome structure. Word Health Organisation (WHO) has designated the current pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 infection as COVID-19 (Sohrabi et al., 2020). The virus shows high infectivity and mainly transmitted in the form of droplets with an incubation period of about 4-5 days. The onset of symptoms in patients is usually within 11-12 days (Linton et al., 2020). The most prominent symptoms seen in almost every patient includes dry cough, fever, fatigue, sore throat, lack of smell and taste, and severe patients suffer from breathing difficulties (Guan et al., 2019). We do not have any effective therapeutics or drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent or treat COVID-19 infections presently. The only treatment available for patients with COVID-19 is supportive care, including supplement oxygen and mechanical ventilator support. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop an effective therapy to treat patients infected with COVID-19. The present situation calls much attention on prophylactics and therapeutics approach. This virus contain four structural proteins viz. the spike (S), membrane(M),envelop (E) and nucleocapsid (N).The S protein is considered to be highly immunogenic and contribute protective immunity in contrast to N, M and E proteins(Saha et al., 2020). Many laboratories have confirmed the entry of virus into human cells after its fusion with cell membrane of target tissues. After fusion, the S protein undergoes proteolysis by host proteases and give rise to S1 and S2 fragments. Thus, S1 protein is ready to interact with angiotensin converting 2 (ACE2) receptors present on respiratory and intestine epithelia besides alveolar macrophages present in the lungs(Cheng et al., 2020). Few studies have confirmed that ACE2 receptors are present in other cells too. S1 protein has a domain that interacts specifically with a domain on the ACE2 receptor. This interaction is must to produce the symptoms of disease (Nadeem et al., 2020).One must understand the role of chloroquine analogues works here by inhibiting virus fusion into the cell membrane. Some laboratories have generated both polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against S1 domain and inhibited the interaction (Ravichandran et al., 2020; Zhao et al., 2020). This is one of the areas of immunotherapy. Some key amino acids present on the S1 domain initiate this interaction with high affinity (Saha et al., 2020). If these amino acids are blocked by monoclonal antibodies or lacked by chance due to mutation, the rate of infection would be reduced and patients may show minimal symptoms. This protective effect can be seen by reduced affinity of viruses to ACE2 receptor that would result in decreased infection. As the virus is getting mutated, some infected persons shown critical symptoms and other escape the disease severity. If the virus continues to mutate to lower its pathogenicity, there is a high possibility that it might coexist with humans. Using computational and bioinformatics, few laboratories have predicted B cells, T cells and cytotoxic T cells epitopes on S protein as well as other structural proteins (Baruah et al., 2020). This will help us to develop virus specific neutralizing antibodies by gene cloning or peptide synthesis-based approach. We personally feel if we have antisera from recovered patients of COVID-19 infection, using panel of peptides from different regions of viral proteins will help us to develop diagnosis kits and peptide-based vaccine. Since immune response is based on individual Human Leukocytes Antigens (HLA), the above approach will help to identify immunodominant regions on viral proteins. In addition, we can identify the polymorphic loci on HLA genes among infected persons showing clinical symptoms and others escape the disease severity to confirm the susceptibility towards infection, immunity and outcomes. COVID-19 infection has led to inflammatory storm due to presence of hyper activated immune cells and over-production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that may determine the outcome (Ye et al., 2020). Several studies have shown the presence of elevated levels of serum pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α) and increased immune inflammatory cells leading to cytokine storm, which could be partially responsible for immune mediated problems in the lungs of the patients(Ye et al., 2020; Felsenstein et al., 2020). Immune mediated, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are commonly seen in ICU that are associated with poor outcome in patients with COVID-19 (Zhang et al., 2020).Therefore, specific blockade of inflammatory storm associated with hyper-inflammation during COVID-19 is an important therapeutic approach when compared to the systemic immunosuppression. To our knowledge, few clinical trials are ongoing to test the safety and efficacy of targeted therapies associated with IL-6, IL-1 receptor and Janus kinases (JAK) blockade in severe COVID-19 patients (Neurath, 2020; Russell et al., 2020). Like targeted therapies, several clinical trials of anti-viral drugs therapies such as Remdesivir, Lopinavin and Favipiravin are ongoing study (Şimşek and Ünal, 2020; Cao et al., 2020). The safety and efficacy of these trials are still unclear which need furthermore investigations in patients across the globe. Recently, few studies have confirmed blood clots in lungs and heart of patients with COVI-19 (Connors and Levy, 2020). We feel that treatment with blood thinner or low molecular weight heparin can reduce the problems of blood clots. Development of animal models of coronavirus infection are useful for testing vaccines and antiviral drugs. However, currently available animal models do not reproduce the inflammatory storm or pulmonary disease observed in individuals infected with SARS-CoV (Cleary et al., 2020). SARS-CoV viruses has been found to replicate in the lungs of domestic cats, hamsters, and mice. These animal models remain symptomatic (Tiwari et al., 2020). Therefore, we believe that development of animal models that establishes COVID-19 infections can show symptoms require a transgenic animal approach. The knowledge obtained from the study of animal models will help us in developing specific therapies, and vaccine would minimize pulmonary disease and optimise the inflammatory storm. Finally, we conclude that vaccine is the best for protection against COVID-19 infections, but development of antiviral drugs or targeted therapies are urgently required to cure COVID-19 patients.

In recent years, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) has received wide attention. STEAM complements early childhood learning needs in honing 2nd century skills. This study aims to introduce a loose section in early childhood learning to pre-service teachers and then to explore their perceptions of how to use loose parts in supporting STEAM. The study design uses qualitative phenomenological methods. FGDs (Focus Group Discussions) are used as data collection instruments. The findings point to two main themes that emerged from the discussion: a loose section that supports freedom of creation and problem solving. Freedom clearly supports science, mathematics and arts education while problem solving significantly supports engineering and technology education. Abstract:
Guest Editors Kathryn Ricketts and Patrick Lewis, University of Regina, Education Johan Huizinga (1944) reminds us that, “Play is older than culture, for culture, however inadequately defined, always presupposes human society, and animals have not waited for man to teach them their playing” (1950, p. 1). In his work Homo Ludens [Man the player or Playing man] he argued that play is a fundamental human function that permeates all cultures from the beginning. Indeed, he argues that “human civilization has added no essential feature to the general idea of play” (p. 1). Play is not a by-product or consequence of culture—rather play exists before culture. More recently, Brian Boyd (2009) in his work, On the Origins of Stories argues that those things we so easily associate with culture and its development, like the arts and stories actually emerge from/through play. Play is often said to be universal--children everywhere are said to engage in some form of play. Nackmanovitch (1990) states, “Play is the free spirit of exploration, doing and being for it’s own pure joy” (p. 43). He goes on to call this state of play as the child-mind: “the most potent muse of all is our own inner child” (p. 44). However, even though play is said to be universal and widely recognizable, play is also very difficult to explicate. That is because play is not an object, an action or a place. Play is abstract, a dynamic and fluid process. Further complicating the idea of play are the plethora of meanings, so together the fluidity of play and the multiplicity of meanings make it impossible to adequately define play: almost any pursuit or act could be play simply by how we frame it (Johnson, Christie & Wardle, 2005, p. 11). The late Brian Sutton-Smith began his life long study of play with Huizinga’s work and at the end of the 20th century pondered “maybe the function of play is quite different from the kinds of things we have been looking at, or perhaps we have been looking at the wrong kinds of function” (Sutton-Smith, 1995, p. 282). Later he would ask, in The ambiguity of play (2001), if a theory of play was even possible. Carl Jung (1990) states that, “the creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity.” (as cited in Nachmanovitch, p. 42). He furthers this by stating “The inner mind plays with the objects it loves.” Part of this exploration of play is to investigate the interplay between the object, the story and the body. Sherry Turkle states, “We think with the objects we love; we love the objects we think with”(Turkle, 2007, p. 6). As we welcome perspectives from Performative Inquiry (Fels 1998), Performance Studies (Schechner,1977), and Thing Theorists (Turkle, 2007), we gain a broader perspective to the diverse approaches of play as a means for emancipatory processes in performance, therapy, education and philosophy. We are interested in methods that depart from text centricity and embrace transmediated (Siegel, 1995) understandings of self in relation to the world. This departure from the text, invites a playful imagining of stories to be constructed collectively, and calls attention to remembered histories while embracing current realities.Submissions This special issue of Childhood Studies imagines contributors taking up the provocation of the title (or a variation) to explore the ludic form across not only the early childhood landscape but through the myriad human activities that intersect and weave through that landscape and beyond. The Editors will consider works in and through: performing arts, performance studies, the visual arts, the child’s eyes, psychology, teacher education, educational research, teacher practice, play theory, and early learning and care. This list is by no means exhaustive, leaving open a playful approach to imagining play as otherwise. Please submit title and abstract by December 1st 2016. Reviews of abstracts will be completed by January1st, 2017 with authors notified of decisions shortly after that date. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit completed manuscripts by March 1st, 2017. Manuscripts should be a maximum of 6000 words. Introducción. El Informe del Defensor del Pueblo sobre violencia escolar –bullying- puso de manifiesto que en la mayoría de los centros educativos surgen situaciones de abuso y violencia entre los escolares (AA.VV., 2000). El contacto con profesionales de la enseñanza general nos revela que, con frecuencia, este fenómeno sólo llega a conocimiento de la comunidad educativa cuando, por desgracia, suele ser demasiado tarde, es decir, cuando las conductas de agresión y de victimización están muy arraigadas y su repercusión es dramática. Numerosos estudios sitúan el bullying como una manifestación de las malas relaciones interpersonales entre los alumnos (Ortega, 1994; Sutton y Smith, 1999). Ahondando en esta cuestión nos planteamos la influencia que puede tener la red de relaciones que se generan en el grupo aula y hasta que punto el víctima lo es no sólo de los ataques de su agresor sino del clima social que vive el grupo, que como un sistema cerrado lo excluye, mientras que el agresor cobra relevancia (Cerezo, Calvo y Sánchez, 2004). Objetivos. Desde las primeras investigaciones buscamos técnicas que permitieran la detección temprana del bullying, y que, a su vez, sirvieran de base para elaborar programas de intervención. Nos planteamos el diseño del test Bull como un instrumento que informara sobre la realidad social y afectiva del grupo aula y la implicación de sus miembros en el bullying, así como sobre características de tipo personal, de interacción social y escolar de los alumnos de cada grupo aula. El Bull-S. Test de evaluación de la agresividad entre escolares (Cerezo 2000), se presenta como una herramienta válida para la detección, medida y valoración de las situaciones de agresividad entre escolares. La prueba persigue tres objetivos fundamentales: Facilitar el análisis de las características socio-afectivas del grupo de iguales, ayudar al profesorado en la detección de situaciones de abuso entre escolares, y a través de sus resultados, avanzar en la elaboración de propuestas de intervención. Método. El instrumento, siguiendo la línea metodológica de la Sociometría y a través de la técnica de peer nomination, analiza de la estructura interna del aula definida bajo los criterios: aceptación-rechazo, agresividad–victimización y la apreciación de determinadas características personales que se pueden asociar a los alumnos directamente implicados.Resultados y conclusiones. El trabajo que aquí se presenta resume las características de este instrumento y su aplicabilidad e incluye una propuesta de intervención para un grupo de alumnos elaborada a partir del análisis del test Bull-S.

Abstract:
Today, more and more efforts are devoted to promoting an open network environment (Libicki 2000). This growing enthusiasm for interoperability is understandable, given the economics of networks. (Shapiro and Varian, 1998; Varian, Shapiro, and Farrell, 2005). To make the most of interconnection today, businesses must enhance their services by adding a variety of functions (Blumenthal and Clark 2000). For these purposes, they are seeking higher-level standards in support of middleware and software applications. While supporting the overall goal of interoperability, this paper sounds a cautionary note. It argues that the value of standards is contextual. Thus, while interoperability may be highly beneficial in a purely economic context, and with respect to the lower levels of the network, it might engender unintended consequences at higher levels where the network is intertwined with political and cultural realms. This paper contends that, as standards efforts become increasingly focused on the upper layers of the Internet, a broader set of evaluative criteria will be required to determine their true costs and benefits. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, this paper takes a first step in exploring these issues. Focusing on the highest–level applications in particular, it examines recent calls to create standards across virtual worlds, using the MPEG-V working group as a case study. Advocates for these standards foresee clear economic benefits for producers and maintainers of virtual worlds, as well as for their inhabitants (Sivan). We argue that such faith in the predictable outcomes of standards betrays a tendency both to think of virtual worlds as the intentional outcome of rational design, as well as to misapprehend the roles of diversity and play in discrete environments. We question this narrow economic perspective. Arguing that a metaverse—like all worlds—is highly complex, we contend that virtual world standards—ranging from EULAs to the software code itself—can only beget unpredictable outcomes, which will not only affect relationships between worlds, but inevitably within communities. Definitions and standards, whether integral to a world or positioned "between" worlds, nonetheless comprise its finite bounds and become part of what Steinkuehler calls "the mangle of play:" Inhabitants of synthetic worlds habitually "amplify, enhance, negate, accommodate, complement, and at times even ignore" even hard-coded rules (200). To identify the costs and benefits of standards in these complex environments, all of these relationships must be considered (Steinkuehler, 2004). As importantly, we argue that virtual diversity, like biological variety, is inherently beneficial to users of synthetic worlds. Inherently arbitrary, virtual worlds are de facto sites of playful activity: This is the source of corporate and individual interest in them as sites of innovation. To realize the benefits of what Sutton-Smith calls “the potentiation of adaptive variability,” we contend that what is needed is not standards across virtual worlds but rather a broad diversity of synthetic, discrete ecosystems. To make our case we briefly identify the economic rationale for network interoperability; next, characterize the metaverse as a complex environment, and describe the role that standards might play within it; and finally, we examine the case of the MPEG-V Working Group to determine the evaluative criteria being used to develop standards, employing a rhetorical analysis of the documents, both formal and informal, associated with this process.

An important objective of research is to create guiding evidences or propose improvements, solutions for practical activities. In order to apply proven research results, all institutions, organizations and individuals should consider appropriate research topics to better understand the issues and select information for the decision-making process and identify solutions for each specific situation. Although research is very important, there is a large gap that makes the widespread application of research evidence into practice difficult. On the basis of synthesizing and evaluating research documents as well as analyzing the real situations of the gap between the research results and the practical applications, the paper examines the origins and causes for the existence of the gap. Abstract:
If love is a many-splendoured thing, then many of its splendours can be seen on toy shelves occupied by recent playthings such as Luv Buds, Love and Kisses, First Love, My Puppy Loves Me and Love-A-Lot Bear. As the meaning of childhood has changed, particularly over the last 150 years (Postman), toys have become a major means of demonstrating and defining love between generations, between genders and between humans and commodities. The widespread availability of commodities, all increasingly finetuned in their prescribed meanings under a regime of rampant advertising, has been a key factor in this development, which reached an apex in the final quarter of the last century. Major toy companies grew dramatically (Stern and Schoenhaus), details of toy-play became more intricately spelt out for children (Kline), and advertising leapt into bold new fronts, not the least being 30-minute toy advertisements masquerading as children’s television programs (Kunkel). Hand in hand with these developments came more sensual elaboration of characters and themes (Kline and Pentecost), in line with general moves towards “commodity aesthetics” (Haug). Selling not just toys but warm fuzzy feelings, toy companies took up slogans such as those surrounding Cabbage Patch Kids: “A special kind of love” and “Come open your arms to a Cabbage Patch Kid” (Blyskal; Jacob, Rodenhauser and Markert). Care Bears made similar claims, each in the set distinguished by heightened sensuality and segmenting the tasks previously performed by the simpler teddy bear. Thus, while semanticists and sociologists grapple with the meaning of the word “love” and the shifting nature of the concept, modern-day toy manufacturers have utilised a number of pertinent notions to underpin their marketing efforts. Such is the importance of marketing that even the basic design of toys can be a marketer’s initiative, giving rise to toys structured specifically around love themes. This is significant because mass marketed toys act as powerful media, transmitting messages, offering interpretations and interacting with other toys and commodities, particularly in terms of communicating the appeals and joys of consumerism on which their existence so heavily relies. Modern toys are not only surrounded by massive advertising and other related texts which leave little to the child’s imagination but, due to their “collaboration” with other commodities in cross-marketing ventures, are prominently positioned to advertise themselves and each other. Messages promoting mass marketed toys are interwoven into the presentation of each toy, its advertising package and other promotional media, including books, films, mall appearances and miniaturisation in children’s packaged fast-food meals. Such schemes highlight the sensuality and appeals of the toys and their themes. Of course children – and their parents – may create oppositional meanings from those intended. The messages are not closed and not always accepted wholesale or unquestioningly, but toys, like other media, often privilege particular readings favourable to the marketplace, as Ann du Cille has pointed out in relation to race and I have noted in relation to gender. Love fits snugly into the repertoire of appeals and joys, taking several different forms, determined mostly by each toy’s target audience and marketing profile. Four of the main variations on the love theme in toys are: Representational love Substitutional love Obligatory love Romantic love I will focus on closely linked representational and substitutional love. A toy that draws on straightforward representational love for its appeal to a parent or carer is typically marketed to suggest that toys are material proof of love, important links in a chain of bonding. At its most crass, the suggestion is that one can prove one’s love for a child by showering her or him with toys, though usually claims are more sophisticated, implying issues of quality and toy genre. In 1993 toy company Mattel was marketing its Disney toys as coming with the special offer of a book. An advertisement in the Australian women’s magazine New Idea spoke of the “magic” of Disney toys and how they would “enchant your child” but made even grander claims of the accompanying book: “It’s valued at $9.95…but you can’t put a price on the bond between you and your child when you read one of these Disney classic tales together.” The pressures of modern-day life are such that parents sometimes feel guilty that they cannot spend enough time with their children or do not know how to play with them or have little interest in doing so, in which case substitutional love can be a strong marketing claim to parents by toys. Among the major features of modern toys and their part in the relationship between parents and children, Brian Sutton-Smith pinpointed a contradiction (115, 127). Parents give their children toys to bond with them but also to simultaneously facilitate separation: “I give you this toy for you to play with…but now go away and play with it by yourself.” Toys not only serve the contradiction but also may offer reconciliation, pitching at a niche seeking substitutional love. Mattel was explicit about this with its promotion of the Heart Family, a set of dolls that on one hand stressed the importance of the traditional nuclear family while, on the other, offered carers a chance to opt out of the burdens of such rigid family organization (Langer). In a booklet entitled “Dear Mum and Dad, will you give me five minutes of your time?” distributed in Australia, Mattel claimed that major research had found that parents did not spend enough time with children and that children felt sad and angry about this. But there was a solution at hand: the purchase of the Heart Family, which incidentally came with an enormous range of accessories, each capable of chipping away at parental guilt though perhaps never quite assuaging it, for there always seemed to be one more accessory on the way. Most notable of these was the large, elegant, two-storeyed dollhouse, Loving Home. The dolls, their dollhouse, musical nursery, playground and umpteen other accessories were, it was insinuated by the Mattel booklet, a way of purchasing “values we all believe in. Sharing. Caring. Loving. Togetherness”. It seemed that the range of commodities could stand in for parents. More recently, Fisher-Price, now part of the Mattel group, has brought out a similar toy line, Loving Family, which hints even more strongly at links between family security and material possessions. Among Loving Family’s accessories are a multi-room family house with attached stable, a beach house, country home, townhouse, beauty salon and much more. While we cannot be sure that these suggested links and parental guilt in the absence of multiple toy gifts take root, toy companies, market analysts, toy advertising agencies and psychiatrists have noted trends that suggest they generally do. They have noted the impact on toy sales thought to be associated with “the high number of children with guilt-ridden working mothers, or from broken homes where parents are trying to buy their offspring’s affections” (McKee). Sometimes parents are keen to ensure the love and affection of playmates for their children. Toy companies also offer this type of substitutional love. Knickerbocker says of its wares: “Toys that love you back,” while among Galoob’s dolls is Mandi, My Favorite Friend. But what a gloomy picture of human companionship is painted by Phebe Bears’ slogan: “When there’s no one else to trust.” Space permits only the briefest comments on either obligatory love or romantic love; the key factor here is that both are strongly gendered. Boys need not concern themselves with either variety but girls’ toys abound which play a socialising role in respect to each. Toys contributing to a concept of love as obligation train girls for a motherhood role that ensures they will be emotionally as well as physically equipped. Kenner doll Baby Needs Me is only one of many such toys. The box of Baby Chris gift set claims the doll “needs your love and care” while Hush Little Baby “responds to your loving care” and “loves to be fed”. Matchbox’s Chubbles is claimed to “live on love”. If the weight of these obligations seems daunting to a girl, the Barbie doll genre offers her a carrot, suggesting that girls grow into women who are the recipients of love from men. A closer look reveals narcissism is surely the strongest type of love promoted by Barbie, but that is not explicit. Barbies such as Dream Date Barbie, Enchanted Evening Barbie and the numerous Barbie brides – even though Barbie is claimed to have never married – promote a straightforward and romanticised view of heterosexual relationships. In conclusion, each toy makes its own grab for attention, often promising love or one of its components, but usually working within a framework of short-term gratification, infatuation, obsession, the yearn to possess and elicitation of guilt – mostly unhealthy ingredients for relationships. While it may be hard to decide what love is, most would agree that, if it ideally has some sense of community responsibility and reciprocity about it, then the definitions offered by these toys fall short of the mark.
